Communities In Schools of Peninsula (CISP), established in 2000, has remained true to its mission: to surround students with a community of support that encourages them to stay in school and succeed in life. Serving 15 schools across the Peninsula and South Kitsap School Districts, CISP’s team of 27 staff, 13 board members, and 200 volunteers brings this mission to life daily.
Through collaborative efforts and a strong network of resources, CISP has effectively fostered an environment where students can thrive academically and personally, underscoring the significant impact of community involvement on educational outcomes. Programs like after-school tutoring, social-emotional support, and basic needs drives for food and clothing enable students to focus on learning, free from unnecessary barriers.
“Being present for our students is more than just showing up—it’s about sending a powerful message that they matter and that we believe in their potential,” shares Colleen Speer, Executive Director of CISP. “When we show up for them, we empower them to show up for themselves.”

Mike Paul
HARBOR LOCAL’S
Mike Paul, a proud native of Gig Harbor, embodies dedication and community spirit. A Gig Harbor High School graduate, Mike comes from the esteemed Finholm family and married his wife Cindy in 1994. Together, they raised three children in their hometown, where they continue to make a lasting impact. Mike founded Mike Paul Construction 32 years ago, drawing inspiration from his grandfathers: Ed Finholm, who worked as a butcher, and Len Paul, a dedicated builder. He cherishes the influence of his parents, Mike and Helen, who demonstrated the importance of letting children discover their identities.
Mike’s connection to Gig Harbor runs deep, having coached various sports since 2001 and leading the Peninsula High School softball team since 2014. His recognition as the community’s Finest Person reflects his deep gratitude for those who’ve shaped his journey. “It means all those people in my life are being recognized for this. I am nothing without those around me.”
Among his proudest achievements, Mike and his wife Cindy joined four other families to purchase property and save it from development, transferring it to the park district to create Harbor Family Park and enhancing the community for generations. Mike’s passion for coaching keeps him young, and he strives to inspire the next generation through sports and life lessons.

FINEST TEACHER OF THE YEAR
Marci Cummings-Cohoe Peninsula School District
Marci Cummings-Cohoe’s educational journey was inspired by her teachers’ nurturing influence during her childhood as an “Army brat.” Moving frequently, her teachers provided a sense of consistency and support, which planted the seed for her career. Although she initially pursued nursing at Northern Arizona University, an introductory education class redirected her path. This shift led her to Washington State University, where she graduated in 1991 and began her career in the Peninsula School District.
For nearly 33 years, Marci has taught various grades, impacting countless students’ lives. Now a 1st-grade teacher at Swift Water Elementary, she remains deeply committed to her students and community. Being named the “Finest Teacher” is particularly meaningful to Marci, highlighting her dedication to fostering relationships and creating an inspiring learning environment.
Marci plays a vital role outside the classroom as a Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS) District Facilitator, motivated by her son’s dyslexia diagnosis. Her family is her biggest support system. Her husband, Brian, has always encouraged her passion for teaching. They have four sons: Brandon (39), who owns a concrete business; Blake (26), completing his residency in orthopedic surgery at UC Davis; and Corbin (16) and Levi (14), both soccer enthusiasts attending Peninsula High School. Each family member has inspired and supported Marci throughout her career, making her a better educator.

CS Floors, owned by Dennis and Katrina Nodell, is more than just a flooring business—it’s a story of community, dedication, and a passion for exceptional customer service. Eight years ago, Dennis and Katrina left their corporate jobs in Sequim to care for her father, diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. After his passing, they purchased CS Floors and returned to Gig Harbor, Dennis’s childhood home.
Upon receiving the 2024 Gig Harbor Living Local’s Finest Customer Service award Dennis shared, “I do not even know that I can express what this means to our team. Honored, thankful, humbled, and ecstatic all jump to mind.” He emphasizes that the recognition is a testament to the team’s dedication and commitment to their values. “I end each of our company meetings with the line, ‘Customer service is not just for the customer.’ By practicing internally the experience we expect our customers to have, we are able to give our customers the best experience possible.”
For CS Floors, the community is the backbone of their business. Largely referral-based, they emphasize building positive relationships, knowing they’ll see their customers around town. “This is our home, and we keep that in mind with everything we do,” Dennis says.
Dennis expresses his gratitude for the community’s support. “To be voted as one of the Finest…is truly an honor,” he adds, showing appreciation for the community and the opportunity to give back.

During divorce settlement negotiations, it is very common for parties to get hung up on final details, where perhaps the monetary value of their individual settlement does not align with their idea of “fair.”
One party may dwell on the fact that the other party may be getting more money in the calculations, however negligible that amount might be. Another party (Party A) may insist that one particular asset can’t be awarded to the other (Party B) – not because Party A wants to retain that asset, but because they just don’t want Party B to have it.
When working with a party, whether as a mediator or lawyer, I recognize when an acceptable resolution to get to a settlement presents itself, but a resistant party who wants to “have the last word” and draw a line in the sand won’t budge.
This is when I often ask, “What is the value of getting this done in terms of your emotional well-being, getting on with your life, and moving forward? Can you apply a monetary value to that?”
All numbers used in property settlement are, for the most part, hypothetical anyway. House values rise and fall. Retirement and
investment account values rise and fall. Cash ebbs and flows. Some assets are subject to taxes upon withdrawal. Houses are subject to costs of sale when sold. Pension valuations are truly hypothetical based on “average life spans.” As professionals, all we have to work with are the best estimates of today’s values and help the parties get to some semblance of launching into their new separate lives on as similar a financial footing as possible. “Similar” does not mean “equal” to the exact dollar.
Continuing negotiations that are merely about proving a point does nothing for your cash reserves (because prolonged negotiations are expensive). More importantly, it does nothing for your overall well-being.

This winter produce is ideal for soups, stews, and roasted dishes that bring warmth and flavor to the winter table.

1 medium butternut squash (about 3 lbs), peeled, seeded, and cubed
2 tbsp. olive oil

1 medium onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
4 cups vegetable broth
1 cup coconut milk (or heavy cream for a richer taste)
1 tsp. ground nutmeg
1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
Salt and pepper to taste
Fresh thyme for garnish (optional)
Method:
1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Toss the butternut squash cubes with 1 tbsp olive oil, salt, and pepper. Spread them on a baking sheet and roast for 25-30 minutes until tender and lightly caramelized.
2. In a large pot, heat the remaining olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and garlic, cooking until soft and fragrant, about 5 minutes.
3. Add the roasted butternut squash to the pot along with the vegetable broth, nutmeg, and cinnamon. Bring to a simmer and cook for 10-15 minutes to allow flavors to meld.
4. Using an immersion blender, blend the soup until smooth. Alternatively, carefully transfer the mixture to a blender and puree in batches.
5. Stir in the coconut milk or cream, and simmer for an additional 5 minutes. Adjust seasoning with salt and pepper to taste.
6. Ladle the bisque into bowls and garnish with fresh thyme, if desired.
