NOTE
Publisher’s
One Nation Under God - Let’s Celebrate! THE FOURTH OF JULY IS HERE. It’s time for parades, fireworks, picnics, boating and more. But I encourage you to take time during this fun filled holiday to reflect for a moment on its meaning. The birth of America 238 years ago.
Where children can explore, create & learn!
I am sure those who signed the Declaration of Independence could in no way envision what America would grow to become. Today the most powerful country in the world is divided among issues such as whether to allow prayer in schools and whether citizens have the right to carry their own gun. Do you think Thomas Jefferson and his colleagues ever imagined that people would want “In God We Trust” removed from our currency? While our country is extremely blessed to be a place where people are free to express themselves, whether it be through speech or religion, it surprises me every day that the very values that this country was founded upon are those being rejected by so many. I know not everyone will agree with me, but I for one would love to see more prayer in our schools, more evidence of Biblical values expressed throughout communities – whether it be through a plaque on the entrance of a Courthouse or a monument in a city park listing the ten commandments - and more attention paid to that very notion upon which our country was founded. On this Fourth of July holiday, remember to thank a soldier, hug a veteran, and remember we are One Nation Under God. It’s definitely a reason to celebrate! We create community! We connect people! We build trust!

The Gig Spot
Recharge your musical soul. By Julianna Verboort. “MUSIC IS A NATURAL part of life, like walking, talking, or eating. Everyone can do it, everyone should do it, and it isn’t hard.” Sitting in seat #4 facing the stage at The Gig Spot, laid back Regan Balman shares his philosophy. “There is a misconception that making music is difficult and only certain people can do it, but I work with kids as young as three and they can play music. I believe in making it approachable and easy so everyone can do it, and take it as far as they want - jazz, classical, wherever they want to go.” Several cafes and restaurants in Gig Harbor host live music, but The Gig Spot is the only venue offering concert-style seating, a stage with professional acoustics, and accommodating an all-ages audience of up to 121 guests. Amid concert-sized speakers and shining stage lights, Regan and Michelle Balman discuss their passion for musical performance and reveal their plans for The Gig Spot.
inspired a vision: the students needed a place to perform on an ongoing basis, and the community needed a live concert venue. In August 2013, Regan and Michelle leased a performing arts space; Regan’s Rock School moved in upstairs as sound equipment was installed below in The Gig Spot. On October 5, Stephanie Ann Johnson (finalist on NBC’s The Voice) rocked the house during The Gig Spot’s first show.
“Our acoustics are superior to almost any other room. The musicians enjoy that,” Regan says. The sound quality has been a draw for noteworthy acts including the international trio Capsula, nationally known band The Beatniks, and regionally recognized blues rocker Kim Archer among others.
“There is nothing like this in Gig Harbor. It is a unique experience here,” Regan points out. “It’s fun when I can book a show with someone I really want to see. Kim Archer performed here last weekend. I totally fangirled out!” smiles Michelle.
Prior to opening The Gig Spot, Regan’s Rock School was a home studio. In the summer of 2012, Regan lit up his yard with a concert where students performed for a large crowd of family and friends. He and Michelle recognized how meaningful it was for the kids to perform on stage and noted the dynamic audience interaction with the musicians, and that

organically. Instructors teach guitar, bass, keyboards, drums, ukulele, vocals, song writing and more. Students are grouped in bands so they also learn band etiquette, musical collaboration, and performance skills.
On a given afternoon, you’ll find up to a dozen kids learning and performing at The Gig Spot while their parents form an audience. “Regan’s Rock School puts young teachers with new musicians. The students develop a relationship with a cool person who is doing what they want to do. They’re learning together in an exciting atmosphere,” explains Regan. “They’re all on stage together, making fantastic music with their parents and friends in the audience.” Michelle underscores that Regan teaches adults too, including a 78-year-old novice. “Sometimes adults think ‘Well, I could have learned once but that ship has sailed,’ and that is not true. Come and play. I can teach you in 45 minutes how to play
100 songs!” Regan adds. “We have a snack bar, juice and soda. We don’t serve alcohol, that is both a good thing and a bad thing, but I don’t plan to add it,” says Regan, who will maintain the all-ages atmosphere for The Gig Spot.
ServiceS include: Oil and Lube Service Paintless Dent Repair Self Service 24 Hour Car Wash Automated Car Wash Tunnel Car Wash Did you know we also service RV’s, boats, motorcycles and golf carts, too?
The pair would like to grow Regan’s Rock School to about 15 bands with 80-100 young people becoming musicians, and they envision a calendar booked with great acts playing to full houses. The Gig Spot can be rented for live theatre, dance performances, recitals, benefits, fundraisers, seminars, and hands-on music studio birthday parties with teachers and instruments available so guests can learn and play. “We’ve had benefits for Promise, Fish Food Bank and Eagle Scouts here,” says Michelle. “Music brings people together. It creates an energy and a vibe that nourishes people in a way food and drink can’t. It enlivens your mind and warms your heart. It is a powerful thing,” says Regan. Home&Essentials THE TINY HOME MOVEMENT The American dream 2.0. By Sarah Polyakov. THIS MONTH I POSE a question to you: if we all look deeply into our hearts, what is the most important part about the place each of us calls “home”? For me, home is about the relationships that are facilitated under my roof. Home is my family, my friends, and connection to others. In other words, home is more about strong and loving relationships. The roof under which all this love and connection is possible is important. But, the roof is not to be confused with the connections themselves. A Delightful Way to Downsize About four years ago, I came across the tiny house movement and have been a fervent enthusiast ever since. Since I was first introduced to the idea of living large in a small space, several companies that build tiny homes have made a name for themselves. For example, a company named Tumbleweed Homes manufactures a beautiful home that is only 161 square feet. Contained within 161 square feet buyers will find a bathroom with toilet and shower and a kitchen with refrigerator, stove, and microwave. The home also contains a living room, a small bedroom, and a sleeping loft upstairs. Tumbleweed’s Homes are built with the ability to easily go off the grid. Buyers can fit them with solar panels, rainwater collectors, and composting toilets. However, I freely admit that most families like mine would have a very difficult time packing their entire lives into 161 square feet. Fortunately, most tiny home companies have much larger options. I have seen some tiny homes that are closer
to 1,000 square feet. The key is, these homes are built to maximize every inch of space within them. But more importantly, these homes are affordable, and they cater to those who do not want to be saddled with a 30-year mortgage. For most of us with young families, the largest expense in our budget is usually the mortgage. Tiny homes provide a viable alternative to over-extending one’s monthly budget. These homes provide an opportunity to own a home free and clear, which has the potential to create more financial security for families. An Idea You Can Bank On Who purchases tiny homes and what do their lives look like? • Two out of five tiny home owners are over 50 years of age • Tiny home owners are twice as likely to have a Master’s degree • Around 70% of tiny home owners have no mortgage • 90% of tiny home owners have less credit card debt than the average American • The average cost to build a tiny home is only $23,000 Living authentically and affordably does not mean that we also must settle for less. While we might need to readjust our expectations in order to make a transition to a tiny home, it can be done. When we live authentically we are not settling for less since it is our relationships that nurture us. As long as family and friends surround us, we are already living the American dream.

Go make a memory.
I WENT HOME for Christmas, to the house that I grew up in. Going back was something after all these years… And I thought of all those summers I paced that porch and swore I’d die of boredom there. And I thought of what I’d give to feel another summer linger, where a day feels like a year. And I let time go by so slow, and I made every moment last. And I thought about years. How they take so long, and they go so fast. These lyrics from songwriter Beth Neilsen Chapman remind us to slow down, enjoy the moment, and make a memory. How many times have we found ourselves busy shopping for school supplies in late August and asking “Where did the summer go?” The summer is filled with hectic schedules, trying to fit in all that we want to accomplish during what is supposed to be a stress free, relaxing summer. Instead many feel the pressure to do it all. September arrives and we often are not only tired, but also disappointed. We realize that the summer was so busy that we had little time to sit back, relax and just be. If you don’t want to experience another “summer hangover” come September, then start by creating a Summer Bucket List. If you have kids, have them participate in the idea process – it’s fun! Ask your partner for input, and make the formation of your list one of your first summer memories of 2014.

Looking for ideas? Here are some suggestions. Make homemade popsicles; watch an outdoor movie; go to a local beach you’ve never visited; make homemade bubbles; or feed the ducks. So you don’t spend the month of September wondering not only where the summer went, but where your money went as well, be sure to keep expectations reasonable and costs low. Your ultimate goal should be focused on time spent with loved ones, being good to yourself, and finding joy in moments, rather than unattainable goals. Summers are long, but the reality is they go so fast. So do what you can to make this one count!

BUMP YOUR HEAD?
Know the signs and symptoms of traumatic brain injury. By Patty Hutchens. IT IS A DIFFERENT WORLD than it was 30 years ago. Back then we rode bikes without helmets, skied down mountains without a second thought of protective headgear, and when we bumped our heads, we did not give a second thought to shaking it off and getting back to our activities, either organized sports or just being a kid. But over time we have become increasingly aware of just how damaging a head injury can be. We are seeing lawsuits filed by former NFL players stating they are now suffering life long effects from multiple concussions. Reports of early onset of Alzheimer’s have been linked with head injuries earlier in life. What many do not realize is that traumatic brain injuries can manifest themselves in many different ways. It is important to be aware of the signs and symptoms, both physical and psychological, and know when to seek medical treatment and advice. According to the Mayo Clinic, effects of traumatic brain injury can become evident either immediately after the injury or up to several weeks later. But whether it is a mild traumatic brain injury or more severe, it is important to be aware and to document your or your loved one’s symptoms. For mild traumatic brain injuries the physical symptoms can include, but are not limited to, loss of consciousness; being dazed or disoriented; a headache; nausea that may or may not include vomiting; fatigue; sleeping more or less than usual; and dizziness. There are also sensory issues that may appear that can be attributed to a head
Gig Harbor Lee@GigHarborBrainTraining.com
injury. These include blurred vision, ringing in one’s ears, a change in taste, an inability to smell, and sensitivity to light or certain sounds. Cognitive issues that can signal that what appeared to be a mild bump on the head may be something more serious include memory loss or problems focusing; mood swings; or feelings of depression or anxiety. With more severe head injuries, the symptoms become greater and more debilitating including things such as persistent headaches, seizures, dilation of one or both pupils, and loss of coordination. Whatever the symptom, whether mild or severe, it is important to seek medical help immediately. A doctor will advise you on limitations to activity and what you can do to feel better and be on your way to becoming symptom free. Fortunately with all the research that has been done in the area of head injuries over the past decade, there are many new treatments that have been shown to help treat symptoms. One such treatment is Brainwave Optimization®. A completely non-invasive procedure, Brainwave Optimization® focuses on the ratios of brainwaves specific to an individual and helps bring balance to one’s brain which can result in a faster recovery from traumatic brain injuries and a whole host of other issues including addiction, anxiety, stress, chronic fatigue and much more. So whether it’s a small bump on the head or a severe blow, be aware of your symptoms and seek medical help right away. It may just save your life.

FINANCIAL FOCUS | EDWARD JONES
IS YOUR PORTFOLIO TRULY DIVERSIFIED? Article for use by Edward Jones financial advisor Erin Abrigo of Gig Harbor You need to create a diversified mix of investments because your portfolio can be more susceptible to negative price movements if you only own one type of asset.
LIFE IS FULL OF UPS AND DOWNS — and the financial markets are no different. As an investor, you’re no doubt happy to see the “ups” — but the “downs” can seem like a real downer. Isn’t there any way to help smooth out the volatility in your investment portfolio? First of all, to cope with volatility, it’s helpful to know what causes it — and there can be many causes. Computers that make trades in milliseconds, based on mathematical models, are sometimes blamed for intraday volatility, but large price swings can also occur following the release of government economic reports, such as those dealing with unemployment and housing starts. Global events, such as the European economic malaise, can also send the financial markets into a tizzy. By being aware of the impact of these events, you can see that the workings of the markets — especially their volatility — may not be as mysterious as you thought. Still, while knowing the causes of volatility can help you prepare for market swings, it won’t blunt their impact on

your portfolio. To do that, you need to create a diversified mix of investments because your portfolio can be more susceptible to negative price movements if you only own one type of asset. To illustrate: If you owned mostly bonds, and interest rates rose sharply, the value of your bonds would likely drop, and your portfolio could take a big hit. But if you owned stocks, bonds, government securities, certificates of deposit (CDs) and other investment vehicles, the rise in interest rates would probably affect your portfolio less significantly. Unfortunately, many investors think that if they own a few stocks and a bond, they’re diversified. But you can actually extend your diversification through many levels — and you should. For the equity portion of your portfolio, try to own stocks representing many market sectors and industries. Also, consider international stocks. And rather than just owning U.S. Treasury bonds, consider corporate bonds and municipal bonds, and diversify your fixed-income holdings further by purchasing shortterm, intermediate-term and long-term bonds. Work with your financial advisor
to determine the mix of asset classes and investments that are appropriate for your financial goals and objectives. How you ultimately diversify your portfolio depends on your risk tolerance, time horizon and long-term goals — there’s no one “correct” asset mix for everyone. And over time, your diversification needs may change. To cite one example, as you enter your retirement years, you may need to increase your percentage of income-producing investments while possibly reducing the amount of growth investments you own. These growth-oriented investments tend to be more volatile, and you may want less volatility during your retirement. However, even during retirement, you will need to own a certain percentage of growth investments to provide you with the growth potential you’ll need to stay ahead of inflation. Keep in mind that diversification can’t guarantee a profit or protect against loss. Nonetheless, building a diversified portfolio may help take some of the volatility out of investing — so look for diversification opportunities whenever possible.

ESTATE PLANNING
Plan for the future today. Article courtesy Richard P. Patrick, Attorney.
OUR LIVES ARE FILLED with uncertainties. We often tell ourselves “we will get around to writing that Will next week.” However, life does not always cooperate with our plans. Basic estate planning documents should be prepared, properly executed, and placed in a safe place. The time to do it was yesterday. Here we discuss the three basic Estate Planning documents.
Basic estate planning documents should be prepared, properly executed, and placed in a safe place. The time to do it was yesterday. A Will spells out exactly how, and to whom, we want our assets given to after we die. The Will names a Personal Representative (PR) that is in charge of making sure that what the Will says gets done. This PR has the power to pay the outstanding bills, sign Deeds, transfer property, and distribute the remaining assets to the beneficiaries. Also, we want to nominate guardians of our minor or incapacitated children in our Will.
If we die without a Will, Washington State Statutes take care of the process; however, we are not given the opportunity to direct the distribution of our assets. We want a Will because a Will is a road map, a set of instructions informing the world of what the person wanted done with their belongings. A little bit on Trusts: Often the cost of forming and maintaining a trust is much greater than the cost of a probate. A Durable Power of Attorney (DPOA) with Health Care Provisions empowers one or more individuals to act on our behalf if we are not able to do so. The “Durable” part of the Power of Attorney is specific language that provides that the powers bestowed to the individual(s) continue even if we are incapacitated. A power of attorney can be revoked at anytime. A health care provision gives power to one or more individuals to make health care decisions for us if we are not able to do so. Sometimes we need someone else to make decisions for us concerning surgery, treatment, or admitting us into a hospital. We want a DPOA with a health care provision so that if we find ourselves unable to make our own personal, business, or medical decisions, we have someone we know and trust who can make those decisions for us. The alternative is a costly trip to the courthouse seeking a Court Order.
The Physicians Directive is a statement expressing how we want to be treated in certain medical conditions. It expresses whether or not we wish to be given lifesustaining treatments in the event we are terminally ill or injured. We want a Physicians Directive so that we can decide for ourselves, in advance, what “Life-sustaining treatment” means, and if we want it used on us in our final days and moments. THE POWER OF MUSIC
It’s a healing effect on the brain. By Annmarie Huppert, 343 Solutions. INDEPENDENCE DAY! A time to celebrate the freedom of crusin’ along on a warm, sunny summer day, windows down, fresh air blowing in, when a song comes on the radio that whisks you back to the moment in time you first heard it - really heard it. You remember how you felt, who you were with, where you were. Music has a way of reaching into our deepest parts and stirring the embers of memory. Neuroscience has a growing body of evidence suggesting music acts upon our brain not only affecting behavior and memory, but also igniting our body’s curative potential. The idea of music as therapy has been around for more than 100 years, but is gaining new attention by helping people manage and/or recover from: muscular dystrophy, stroke, respiratory rates, high blood press, traumatic brain injury, cancer/leukemia treatment, dementia, autism, and post traumatic stress (PTSD). For most, being transported back in time by a favorite song on the radio is a pleasant experience. But what if every song you heard in a day gripped your soul - that tune at the coffee shop, the grocery store, in your car, at the bank? Can you imagine how disruptive and emotionally exhausting that might be? Then, you have an idea of what life is like for someone struggling with the debilitating effects of Post Traumatic Stress. When a traumatic event happens, the brain captures every sensory aspect. Like a crystalized snowflake, each thing smelled, seen, heard, touched, perceived, tasted, thought or felt emotionally at the moment of the trauma is frozen in time. It’s the mind’s way of encapsulating the horror, containing the confusion and protecting a person from a lifethreatening event. Over time, the mind invents creative ways to keep a person from reexperiencing anything remotely similar, but not always successfully, and eventually the snowflake begins to melt, especially in the hot sun of summertime fireworks, music and memories. But can music heal? It’s been discovered that music activates regions of the brain, which respond to music by creating new neurological pathways around damaged areas. Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.), who was shot in the head at point blank range during a town meeting, credits her dramatic recovery and ability to get her voice back to music therapy. The rhythmic aspect of music provides structure and organization within time. A key element in relearning how to walk or speak. Sometimes, it’s easier to sing words, rather than say words, especially when you can’t find the words at all. Enjoy the marching bands, outdoor concerts and summertime celebrations - let the music move you! Look around at how music moves others. Let it wash you in memories that heal. Dust off that old hi fi, dig out your cherished vinyl, and introduce music back into your life. You won’t believe what you’ve been missing!
What Are Triggers? The mind, so detailed in crystalizing a traumatic event, can’t avoid bumping into any number of sensory elements resembling the trauma over an entire lifetime. These are called triggers. When survivors bump into triggers, PTSD symptoms result. Unfortunately, making the environment “behave” by forbidding friends and loved ones to set off triggers doesn’t work. Triggers are everywhere! It would be impossible for anyone to avoid potentially activating the multitude of triggers connected to a traumatic past.

Of Mythology
& Men The legend of the Selkie folk. Written and photographed by Sarah Polyakov.
DURING SPRING AND SUMMER, some of us are lucky enough to encounter the harbor seal on Puget Sound’s beaches. These pinnipeds with puppy dog eyes are a year-round sight in the Salish Sea. But there’s more to harbor seals than meets the eye. These seals are connected to us by an ancient legend that precedes the written word. No one quite knows when it all began, when the grueling task of daily living became the stuff of local mythology; when the alchemy occurred that made myth and man one. Sometime in the distant past, during the bitter winter nights in Scotland, Ireland, and Scandinavia, families huddled around the fire to gather warmth. It was during this time that the spark of life was given to a story. Stories were told to explain the world, to keep out the lingering darkness, and to remind ancient peoples of their connection to and their reliance upon the natural world. On one those frigid nights, an enduring legend was born that would forever intermingle the fate of both man and harbor seal. These ancient peoples conceived that harbor seals held the power of transformation. On sunny days or moonlit nights, they believed harbor seals shed their silvery skins and transformed into particularly attractive humans with silky black hair and large, dark eyes. Once in human form, Selkie folk courted local villagers and partook of the roasted fish that was a staple of the human table. The myth recounted that when one of the villagers found the Selkie’s sealskin, the Selkie was bound by tradition to marry the human who now possessed his or her skin.
July 2014 | Gig Harbor Living Local 23
KEEP OUR OCEANS CLEAN If we pollute the oceans and use dragnets, we take away the seal’s true habitat and food source.
Sometimes Selkie folk, once wedded to humans, even had families. But the sea called to a Selkie even when she was in human form. Whether she had children or not, she knew that the day she found her seal skin would be the very day she returned to the sea. Of course, a villager spouse hoping to delay the day when his beloved seal spouse would return to the waves carefully ensured her sealskin was hidden where it could not be readily discovered. After all, even though Selkie folk had the power to live life as both human and seal, the sea was singular to the heart of a Selkie. For the ocean was her primal home and the tug of the briny air was more potent than the bonds Selkie folk developed with land-dwellers. Many of these ancient tribes believed that they were derived from the union of human and Selkie. To them, this was a great honor since they perceived themselves as inexorably connected to the natural world. Anthropologists believe that this myth developed because both man and seal lived side-by-side, drawing from the rich bounty of the northern waters. Seals hunted in the shallow waters of northern bays, consuming squid, crustaceans, mollusks, herring, rockfish, or whatever food sources were available. Infinitely curious, they followed fishermen wherever they went. Men knew that where there were seals, there were also abundant food sources. It has been said that since seal eyes can look so soulful and human, it is no wonder that these ancient peoples developed a myth that connected seal and man. There has also been some speculation that the frequent sightings of friendly seal led to the more elaborate tales of beautiful mermaids. 24   Gig Harbor Living Local | www.GoGigHarbor.com
“Family farms and small businesses are the backbone of our communities”
But it was the power of transformation that so captivated ancient tribes. He who had the power to transform, metaphorically ruled kingdoms both on land and beneath the waves. To early Nordic and Celtic peoples, seals had a meaningful spiritual significance since they were considered to be keepers of the ancient wisdom of the inner self. As a totem, they were believed to help humans integrate this innate wisdom with intellect reason; thus bestowing a balanced, sage, and harmonious life. Metaphorically, the seal inside a Selkie symbolizes the wisdom of inner knowing; the human aspect of the Selkie symbolizes the conscious mind. When a Selkie loses her skin, this is metaphorically significant because it illustrates a separation from her inner self. Once she is back in her sealskin, she has reintegrated both conscious and unconscious awareness. Thus, this story provides a gentle lesson about the significance of staying in touch with intuition. Just as ancient peoples connected themselves to the seals through mythology, so we are connected to them through the natural world. If we pollute the oceans and use dragnets, we take away the seal’s true habitat and food source. When seals lose their home and their source of sustenance, we lose too. From an ecological perspective, the destiny of the common harbor seal is intricately linked to ours. So it goes today, just as thousands of years ago, the destiny of both man and seal remain figuratively and literally connected. The next time you see a seal curiously watching you, you could very well be seeing a Selkie, just waiting for the chance to dance on a moonlit, rocky beach.

“Expertise you can trust, from people who care” Sarah’s interest in Home Management began with a local family in need of someone to watch over their second home, manage a vacation property and shop for new furnishings. By 2013, she broadened GHHM’s services by hiring a team of dedicated employees who remain focused on customer service. Sarah’s personal philosophy is that it is an honor to be given the key to someone else’s house. “It is a very personal decision,” she says. “I want to earn their trust and be their advocate. I want the client to feel they are in charge and I am their representative.”

Sarah ensures that she is aware of each client’s experience with GHHM. “I don’t outsource,” she says. “It’s me in your house. Everyone who goes in your house to provide core services is on my team. I’m not a referral business.” GHHM guarantees that with every service offered, clients will receive high quality work, exceptional customer service, and attention to important details. Sarah’s enthusiasm for business began many years ago, and she earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in 1994 from Seattle Pacific University. She brings years of experience in project management, recruiting, volunteer coordination and fundraising to GHHM. Most importantly, Sarah is clearly aware of the ever-changing needs of the local community. Trained by the National Association of Senior Move Managers®, Sarah is excited to support seniors during a move to a new living space. She assures her clients that, “The expert guidance of a Senior Move Manager® can minimize chaos and anxiety, reduce the emotional and physical distress of key decisions, and help avoid costly mistakes and remorse that often accompany major lifestyle transitions.” GHHM’s Senior Relocations division provides support during this important transition in the life of a loved-one. To meet this need, GHHM has a team of house cleaners, organizers and administrative staff.

in Focus
By Julianna Verboort. TODAY, PEOPLE AROUND THE WORLD are fighting to be heard and for their opinions to matter. The ideal of democracy is so compelling that millions have sacrificed their lives for it. Likewise, millions have won the right to vote but risk personal harm or retribution against those they love for exercising that right. Last November, Pierce County ranked 36 out of 39 Washington counties for voter turnout. Lower turnout is typical for mid-term elections, yet every election brings issues that matter. Voting builds the framework of our communities. It is our great fortune to live in a democracy where our values can be safely expressed through a valid voting process. In fact, voting is incredibly convenient; you can print a voter’s pamphlet in the comfort

In the August 5 Primary Election, you can vote for U.S. Congressional Representatives, State Legislative Representatives, Pierce County Council, District Court, and important local measures. Within Peninsula School District, there are two significant propositions that could provide funding for the construction and improvement of schools in Gig Harbor and Key Peninsula. Proposition 1, a $60 M bond, includes funds for a new school in the North Harbor to accommodate continued population growth, and to rebuild the 60-year old Artondale Elementary School, plus funding other hard improvements across all PSD schools. Proposition 2 is a levy, the amount of which depends on whether or not Prop 1 passes. If both Prop 1 and 2 pass, the levy will reduce to $2M and only fund technology, while Prop 1 funds capital improvements. If Prop 1 fails and Prop 2 passes, it will be a $55.9 M levy to fund most capital projects that would have been funded by the bond. Citizen campaign websites and public meetings offer detailed information.

Katie Campbell
PENINSULA HIGH SCHOOL. BY MERIDITH HATCH. PENINSULA HIGH SCHOOL graduate Katie Campbell is a well-rounded leader poised for success. Katie played goalkeeper for four years on Peninsula High’s varsity soccer team, while also playing in the Harbor Premier league. She was First Team All-League her junior and senior years, and defensive MVP and an allstate honorable mention her junior year. A multi-sport athlete, Katie also played tennis her sophomore through senior year, leading her team as team captain her senior year Sports have taught Katie to never give up. She explains, “One of the biggest challenges I’ve had in sports is that I am a very quiet person. In being the goalkeeper, I am required to lead the team, notice things that the field players would not notice, and guide them in their play. I began to notice that the more vocal and helpful I was, the better my team played.”

With a near perfect GPA and numerous advanced placement (AP) classes, Katie understands the importance of academics. She has AP tested for college credit in several courses, including biology, calculus, physics and literature. She will attend the University of Washington this fall, aspiring to enter medicine and become a physician. With parents in the medical profession, Katie is familiar with and undaunted by the dedication required to be in the medical field. “I was never pressured to go into it as some people are; I have always admired my parents and loved what they do.” When asked about sports at the collegiate level, Katie explained that, while sports have been something she
Beyond academic success and athletic prowess, Katie has still found time to give back to the community, volunteering at Tacoma’s Nativity House once a month. Her service, hard work and determined attitude in academics and sports have set the tone for her future. “In soccer, the attitude of the team reflects the attitude of the goalkeeper,” she said. “I think that in noticing that, and in improving my own play, I became more confident and better able to lead.” Favorite Food: Pizza. “Pizza is never boring; you can turn it into anything. It is the most versatile of the foods.” Favorite Teacher: “I don’t have a favorite teacher; Peninsula High School has so many amazing teachers I don’t think that I can choose one.”

GIG HARBOR HIGH SCHOOL. BY MERIDITH HATCH.
MY TEAM
THE FUTURE LOOKS BRIGHT for Gig Harbor High School’s recent graduate and dual athlete Aubrey Lindberg. Aubrey’s primary sport was softball, and she played starting goalkeeper for Lady Tides soccer in her senior year. In Tides softball, Aubrey was named “honorable mention” her freshman year, received First Team All League recognition her sophomore through senior years, and was nominated for league MVP.
well as rewarding for Aubrey. “One of the biggest challenges in my softball career was [when] I was moved from my starting position as shortstop to second base.” Explaining how everything is the opposite of how it is as shortstop when you play second, “I had to learn how to reverse everything I knew and force myself to learn the ins and outs of second base, to play as if I had been playing there my whole life.”
Aubrey shared one of her favorite memories of playing high school sports, recounting how she was one of three freshmen girls playing on the varsity softball team. “We were playing league rivals, Olympia, at home. We were down one run with two outs in the bottom of the 7th [inning]. I came up to bat and hit a first pitch walk-off home run over the left field fence. The crowd went crazy! It was one of the best feelings in the world—one I will never forget.”
Through sports Aubrey has learned what is important in life. “I never want to be that player who brags about their batting average or how many home runs they hit, because in the end that stuff doesn’t matter. I strive to become better every time I walk onto a field.”
Tides softball has been challenging as
Aubrey received offers to play at the collegiate level, but she has made the difficult decision to put academics ahead of athletics. “I am choosing to just focus on being a student, but I will always be involved with athletics, whether

Wine & Food Festival A celebration of the region’s wine, foods, spirits, and brew. By Sarah Polyakov & Mike Trittin.
“I COOK WITH WINE, sometimes I even add it to the food” — W.C. Fields A rollicking good time is sure to be had for all at Gig Harbor’s fourth annual Wine and Food Festival. Be sure to come to the Gig Harbor History Museum on the beautiful downtown waterfront for an afternoon of food, wine, beer, and spirit samplings, celebrity chefs, cooking demonstrations, auctions, exhibitors, classes, and more. Did we mention celebrity chefs? Have you ever browsed the wine section and wondered which wines would best suit your individual palette? Washington enjoys a thriving wine culture, and most restaurants feature wine lists characterized as nothing short of epic poetry. With so many varieties of wine to choose, it’s a daunting task to select the right one. Fortunately, at the Gig Harbor Wine and Food Festival, you will have the rare opportunity to taste several varieties of wine (although, we strongly recommend you hydrate in between glasses). For centuries, family and friends have come together to build relationships, talk business, and enjoy one another. On July 26th from noon to 5pm, Gig Harbor is providing the same opportunity. You may sample regional items from twenty-four wineries, four breweries, three distilleries and twentythree gourmet food vendors. When it’s time to take a break from the

tastings, there are several opportunities to educate yourself on topics that include wine selection, beer making, and informational sessions on whiskeys. Classes occur twice a day and are included in the ticket price. Chef Tom Douglas, recipient of the James Beard Award for Best Northwest Chef, will be center stage at the 2014 Festival. KIRO Radio’s Seattle Kitchen Show will record on-site during the festival. Seattle Kitchen is a foodie’s dream as chefs Tom Douglas and Thierry Rautureau review the Puget Sound’s best restaurants and hot spots, delight listeners with recipes based on a special weekly ingredient, and answer listeners’ burning culinary quandaries. Tom Douglas, along with his partners Jackie Cross and Eric Tanaka, is the Seattle based chef-owner of a sizeable group of successful and diverse businesses including: Dahlia, Lounge, Etta’s, Seatown, Rub with Love Shack, Palace Kitchen, Lola, Serious Pie (two locations), Serious Biscuit, and the Dahlia Bakery. Often described as the chef who put Seattle on the culinary map, Tom has earned national recognition and has authored four cookbooks. His specialty is crafting global cuisine featuring regional ingredients. “We are absolutely delighted to have Tom Douglas on board this year as our celebrity chef,” said Gig Harbor’s Downtown Waterfront Alliance President, Gary Glein. “And to have KIRO broadcast is a real plus.” After the live broadcast, chefs Tom
and Thierry will be available for a meetand-greet and perform a live cooking demonstration. This popular festival is back for its fourth year, and the event has always been a hit. But this year’s festival promises to be the best by far. The best bet to ensure your spot is to purchase your tickets early since half of the tickets have already been sold! The Gig Harbor Wine & Food Festival is cosponsored by the Gig Harbor Downtown Waterfront Alliance and the Rotary Club of Gig Harbor. All proceeds will sponsor local community projects around Gig Harbor. The primary benefactor of this year’s event is the Cushman Connection Trail — a project to tie the Cushman Trail into Downtown Gig Harbor by way of switchbacks behind the Gourmet Burger Shop on the corner of Harborview Drive and Burnham Drive. “The Cushman Connection Trail is a project that all Gig Harbor Residents can identify with. Cushman Trail is a fantastic trail system through Gig Harbor for walking, running and biking. To tie this into the downtown waterfront corridor is an incredible addition, and why we named this project as our primary benefactor of the event,” said Beth Glein with the Gig Harbor Wine and Food Festival. Gig Harbor has always been a town that embraces community. A glass of wine and a good meal are sure to build lasting relationships good times had by all. Pre-registration for this event
Gig Harbor has always been a town that embraces community. A glass of wine and a good meal are sure to build lasting relationships good times had by all. is highly recommended. Please visit www.brownpaperticket.com to ensure your spot. Mark your calendars for July 26th! The Official Wine Taster’s Cheat-Sheet for the Event Don’t speak the language of wine? Need a refresher course? Don’t worry: put this little cheat sheet in your pocket so that you may go tete-a-tete with the most sophisticated wine tasters in Gig Harbor. 1. Body: the body of the wine refers to the weight of the wine on your palette. There are light-bodied, mediumbodied, and full-bodied wines. 2. Crisp: A wine’s ‘crispiness’ comes from the natural acid in grapes. However, the type of grape as well as the climate in
which it is grown influences the acidity of a wine. The cooler the climate, the more acidic a wine will be. 3. Finish: The finish refers to the length of time the wine’s flavor remains in your mouth. The longer the finish the better. 4. Legs: When you gently swirl the wine in your glass, rivulets of the wine will coat your glass and then slowly run back down, incorporating themselves back into the wine. There is a myth that this phenomenon can determine the quality of the wine, but that is not so. 5. Aroma: While some use the word ‘nose’ to refer to aroma, nose is not technically the correct term. Aroma refers to the scents associated with a young wine. 6. Bouquet: Bouquet refers to the complex set of aromas that evolve together after the wine has aged. 7. Tannin: Tannin is a natural preservative that occurs during fermentation of grapes. Some wines contain more of it than others depending on how long the grapes were left to mature on the vine. If there is too much of it, wine can seem astringent. But experts know that pairing wines high in tannin with soft cheese or red meat allow them to seem velvety on the palette, rather than astringent.

Health&Lifestyle Middle-Aged Musings “Just go at your own pace...” Yeah, right. By Teresa Pesce.
This column is dedicated to the Middle-Aged among us, lost in society’s Bermuda Triangle between being young and being “older”, acknowledged only by ads selling them cosmetics to make them look young again and comfort bras to ease the inevitable triumph of gravity. IN GROUP EXERCISE CLASSES an often heard instruction is, “Just go at your own pace.” Many fitness class leaders say that. What else are they going to say? “Go away”? Should they publicly cull you from the herd and tell you to go to the “Heaven Help Them” exercise class where a single sit-up is considered a triumph? So they welcome you, and once you’re there it’s a little hard to participate for a total of five minutes in a 60-minute class, so you push yourself. It’s only human to want to keep up! I’ve even seen
classes of veteran exercisers trying to keep up with their instructor as he did multiple sets of 50 perfect sit-ups, while the participants gradually weakened and were pulling, heaving, hauling and hoisting themselves into sitting positions any way they possibly could – with little or no effect on their abdominals and quite a lot of strain on their necks. Once I overheard an athletic young woman in her early twenties tell a fellow exerciser that after a particular exercise class, her gluteal

muscles were so sore she couldn’t sit down on a toilet seat for three days. If I pushed myself to keep up with a class like that, I wouldn’t be out of the ICU for three days. So what should one do? If you want to be part of a class, get stubborn and go at your own pace, just as the leader suggested! If you do three sit-ups properly, you may well have done better than someone flailing out 50 of them under group pressure. And there’s another thing about it – if you go as slowly as is good for you, you’ll be able to increase your repetitions soon, which is far better than if you strain yourself to keep up but fall short, and get discouraged and give up! Be strong! Be brave! Don’t give in to the temptation to keep up with the throng as an instructor carols out for everyone to do three sets of 25 abdominals, followed by another three sets of 25 abdominals. Bring a good

book with you, do as many repetitions as you can, and then stop and read quietly. (After all, there’s nothing wrong with improving your mind along with your body.) Open a bottled water and hydrate. Maybe if we all do this often enough, others in the class may be emboldened to respect their limits and join us until the exercise room becomes a library nook of sip-broken silence, and the instructor realizes they need to modify the routine. Conclusion? Even if our middle-aged versions of things are a bit different, they are valid and they work! Join up or not, but never, never, never give up! Founder of Sandpoint Onstage, Teresa Pesce is dedicated to supporting and promoting everyone in our community with theatrical gifts, whose age is irrelevant and whose only “weight” is the impact of their art.
Oh My Aching Feet!
Get the facts about plantar fascitis. Brought to you by Coeur d’Alene Hand Therapy and Healing Center. FOOT PAIN CAN TAKE a lot of the fun out of your summer. The most common cause of heel pain is plantar fasciitis (pronounced “PLAN-ter- fash-ee- EYEtis”), and it can really be debilitating. Described as a dull ache or a sharp pain on the bottom of the foot, it can usually be reproduced by flexing the toes upwards, tensing the fascia which is the connective tissue on the bottom of the foot that has become inflamed. It is especially noticeable when first standing up after sitting awhile, getting up first thing in the morning or with extended standing and walking. Plantar means “foot,” Fasciitis means “inflammation.” This occurs when the long, flat ligament, called the plantar fascia, tears or becomes inflamed. When you walk or run, you land on your heel and raise yourself on your toes as you shift your weight to your other foot, causing all your weight to be held up by your plantar fascia. Such repetitive force pulls on your fascia, causing damage and plantar fasciitis. This inflammation can be caused by tight Achilles tendons or calf muscles, high arches or flat feet, and rolling inward when you walk. Activities such as walking barefoot over hard uneven surfaces, too many lunges at the gym (especially without stretching calf muscles), running or jumping with repetition and force, and extended standing can contribute. Excessive weight and shoes that do not fit well or provide enough support can also be a cause.
Plantar fasciitis can limit your activities and your enjoyment of them, so it is important to treat it right away. It may take a long time to resolve because we are constantly irritating the fascia when we walk. However, there is much you can do to prevent and treat it. Start with shoes that are supportive and appropriate for the type of sport or activity you are doing. Specialized shoes can be worn for treatment for plantar fasciitis, but there are limited styles so most people opt for a shoe insert or orthotic. Sometimes the over the counter orthotics are fine, but you may need to seek the help of a professional for this. Reducing the pain of fasciitis can also be achieved by gentle stretching of calf muscles, icing, massage to increase blood flow, and sometimes night splints that keep the fascia lengthened. Often missed is the effect of our posture on the feet. If the body is off balance, more pressure will be on one foot. Also tightness in the tissue and muscles of the legs can pull down the leg all the way into the fascia of the foot. Correcting the postural imbalance can often relieve symptoms and avoid further injury. Of course, it works both ways. If your feet hurt - you hurt. We will often compensate for sore feet by shifting weight to one side and standing abnormally. Myofascial release can be especially helpful in releasing restricted tissue and holding patterns that have caused or recreate the symptoms. Combined with a self-treatment program, you can get better faster and get back to the activities you enjoy.

Maintain a Healthy Body Chiropractic care can help reduce the risk of injury. By Susan Hoffman.
FOR MANY, SUMMER is a time to take a break, relax, enjoy recreation and maybe work less and take a step back from routines. All of this can be healthy and rejuvenating; however taking a break from healthy and productive living can be harmful and detrimental for mental and physical well-being and fitness. This is true not only for adults but especially for young students who are off for the summer and out of their routine and schedules. Some may find themselves not exercising at all, or to the other extreme of exercising too much in preparation for a school sport Young athletes must practice proper nutrition as well as proper body conditioning in an effort to prevent injuries and achieve optimum physical and mental performance. Dr. Timothy Ray, a member of the American Chiropractic Association’s Council on Sports Injuries and Physical Fitness, explains. “The majority, if not all, of sports are good provided that the child prepares appropriately. Without proper preparation, playing any sport can turn into a bad experience. There are structural and physical developmental issues that need to be taken into consideration before children undertake certain sports.” Both parents and young athletes need to be aware of ways to protect themselves from sports related injuries. These include proper warm up as well as stretching and strength training. It is helpful to begin with a slow jog before doing a sports specific warm up as well as stretching all the major muscle groups. Following are some things to consider: • Sports equipment should fit properly and not be damaged. This includes helmets, shoes, and pads.

Chiropractic care is very beneficial for sports injuries because much of a chiropractor’s education includes hours of study in the expertise of nutrition, weight management, exercise, spinal realignment, massage, and preventative care.
• Eat healthy meals and do not skip meals- avoid high fat and fast foods. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. • Maintain a healthy weight with proper nutrition and calorie intake. • Hydration is crucial and teenage athletes should drink at least 8 glasses of water daily. • Drinking milk (one per cent or skim) is essential for healthy bones and can reduce the risk of joint and muscle related injuries. • Sports drinks are a good choice. Avoid sugar-loaded, caffeinated or carbonated drinks. • Include a routine of pre and postgame warm up and stretching. • Trendy supplements are not recommended. A daily multivitamin and vitamin C are approved.
• Eight hours of sleep is essential for alertness and focus. Even with all the above helpful and healthy choices, injuries do occur and will need to be treated. Chiropractic care is very beneficial for sports injuries because much of a chiropractor’s education includes hours of study in the expertise of nutrition, weight management, exercise, spinal realignment, massage, and preventative care. Chiropractors are wellness oriented and their practice optimizes spinal alignment so that your brain, nervous systems and bodily systems work together in unison. Athletes, no matter what their level, want to perform as well as enjoy themselves. Chiropractic helps to ensure maximum range of motion and proper spinal alignment; traits that will translate into more power, better range and accuracy. More importantly, chiropractic can help reduce the chance of injury when included as part of a regular wellness regimen.

JW prides itself on their southern hospitality where no detail is overlooked. The owners believe in honest food at honest prices and achieve this by a seasonal menu where you can enjoy several options throughout the year. Additionally, JW offers tantalizing specials during the week. One of the most popular is the monthly Winemaker Dinner at which you can rub elbows with the winemaker and enjoy a four course paired dinner selected by the winemaker. You can also stock up on your favorite wines from the dinner and “take home” your experience! If you are looking for a great happy hour spot, JW offers half price wine Thursdays from 4-6. Seniors can get in on the fun too and enjoy 10% off their entire bill on Sundays. Visit JW on Tuesdays and Wednesdays for a special menu and receive a three course meal for $30.00. Family is the focus behind this very unique dining experience. Owners since March of 2011, Jamie Lindsey, Jason, Joe and Karen Winniford have always had a passion for the culinary arts. Jamie, a co- owner, manages the restaurant and takes pride in JW’s true family affair describing how JW came to be. Jamie said, “Jason, one of the co-owners, brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in the culinary world. He has studied at Cordon Bleu and has over 20 years of experience in restaurants and management. Jason conceptualized and opened JW as a dream to provide Gig Harbor with a unique, adult dining experience that is cozy and intimate.”
Another reason to visit JW is to see what Chef Eddie Williams is cooking! He is behind the scenes, literally! Chef Williams won the 2014 South Sound’s Best Chef Award. He spearheads the creative comfort cuisine with a twist on old classics, mixing foods you know with amazing flavors! JW has received several accolades in addition to South Sound’s Best Chef, including 2011 Best New Restaurant, 2012 Best Restaurant, and 2013 Best Service. Recipe the Bleu
BuffaloChickenand Bleu Cheese Onion Bombs GatherIngredients:
Blue Cheese Center Cut The Center Cut Blue Cheese is the premium selection of the Blue Cheese Wheel... deliciously rich and developed in flavor. Litehouse Artisan Cheese is Hand-Crafted and aged 100days. Our Blue Cheese is made with Single Source Milk and is r-BST Free.
• 2 medium white, yellow or sweet onions • 1 lb ground chicken breast • 1/2 cup bread crumbs • 1 large egg • 1/4 cup minced onion (taken from above onions) • 1/4 cup minced celery • 1 Tbsp Litehouse Foods Instantly Fresh Garlic • 1/4 cup hot pepper sauce (like Tabasco) • 1 teaspoon salt • 4 oz Litehouse Food’s Blue Cheese Center Cut • 4 oz Litehouse Food’s Chunky Blue Cheese Dressing • Garnish: Celery ribs
PutItTogether: Cut onions in half lengthwise from top to bottom. Slice off attached ends. Carefully peel apart onion layers and set aside approximately 16 of the best-shaped halves. Mince some of the leftover onion to get the 1/4 cup required for the meatballs. In a bowl, thoroughly mix together the ground chicken, bread crumbs, egg, minced onion, minced celery, garlic, hot sauce and
salt. Form into eight meatballs. Using your thumb, make an indention into the center of each. Place approximately 1 teaspoon of blue cheese in the indention and then reform meat to enclose. Wrap each meatball with two halves of onion layer. Halves don’t need to match perfectly, overlap if needed. Wrap each meatball tightly in heavy-duty aluminum foil. Cook over indirect heat (grill or campfire) at approximate temperature of 400 F degrees. Cook foil-covered onion bombs for approximately 30 minutes, flipping once. To serve, unwrap each onion bomb from foil and drizzle with blue cheese dressing.

Lake Roosevelt.
Weekend Getaway Lake Roosevelt. By Colin Anderson.
IN GIG HARBOR WE ARE BLESSED to be surrounded by water. It’s hard to imagine pulling your boat out of the water, but if you’re looking for new waters to explore, try heading east to one of the largest lakes around. Lake Roosevelt is the result of the 1941 creation of the Grand Coulee dam along the Columbia River. This created a 130 mile long lake filled with incredible recreational opportunities. The lake is bordered by the Colville and Spokane Indian Reservations as well as the Colville National Forest. While surrounded by forest and trees near Kettle Falls, further south you’ll find incredible geological formations and miles of sandy beaches. A day is simply not enough time to explore this paradise so plan on going by boat or hopping campgrounds. CAMPING Lake Roosevelt has 27 designated campsites. Each site has a paved parking space large enough for most RVs, fire ring, and a picnic table. Most of the locations have flush toilets and running water while others have wells and pit toilets. There are no hookups in the campgrounds so those with RVs wanting power will have to bring their own. Camping is $10 per night and those looking to book sites for parties of 25 or more should do so using the website www. reserve.gov. One of my favorite campsites is Hawk Creek Campground. The main attraction here is Hawk Creek Falls which seemingly come out of nowhere. The water level varies greatly here from a tiny trickle to a full stream depending on the time of year. This is also a popular fishing access when water levels are right, and when the water level drops many people fish from shore here. There are several hikes you can take from the campground. You can follow a fisherman’s trail about 20 minutes and you’ll soon open up to a beautiful view of the lake. There are sandy beaches here where you can park and read a book or take a quick dip. Swimmers should use caution as the drop off is steep.
Further to the North there are half a dozen sites around Kettle Falls where you can visit the Sherman Pass National Scenic Byway, Fort Colville, and St. Paul’s Mission, one of the oldest churches in the state of Washington. This area is a must for history buffs. BY BOAT The best way to explore all this area has to offer is by water. If you’re a boat owner you have any number of places to launch, all depending on what you want to see and do. Lake Roosevelt is especially popular with fishermen, as it’s known to produce consistent numbers of walleye, rainbow trout, kokanee, and small mouth bass. Know that tribal fishing licenses might be required if you cross a reservation. Check with Washington Fish and Wildlife before planning where to drop your line. If you have a long weekend, you can pull up your boat to many campsites along the lake or simply run up onto a beach and sleep under the stars. If you aren’t a boat owner, take on the ultimate staycation by renting a houseboat for up to seven days. The Marinas

Most houseboats come with multiple bedrooms and bathrooms, full kitchens, sun decks and a few even have built in hot tubs. This is a great way to spend a family trip as kids can enjoy swimming and fishing, and mom and dad have all the comforts of home. You can go at your own pace, choose your route and many boats can sleep a dozen or more, perfect for multiple families or a large group.
