Women caregivers face financial challenges
n March 8, we observe International Women’s Day. Although this event celebrates women’s achievements, it’s still true that women, especially caregivers, face significant financial hurdles. How can these
To begin with, let’s look at some concerning statistics connected to American women in the “sandwich generation” — those who care for children and parents or other relatives — from a study by Edward Jones and research firms
•Nearly half of women report feeling
•Almost two-thirds of women say caregiving duties have harmed their ability to save for their own financial goals.
•More than half of women have had to reduce their professional responsibilities due to caregiving, resulting in the loss of potential income.
So, if you’re a sandwich-generation woman, what can you do to improve your financial outlook?
Consider these suggestions:
•Establish your own financial goals Depending on the length and complexity of your caregiving duties, your own financial goals could be affected. For example, you may need to change your retirement date from what you had originally intended, or else adjust the retirement lifestyle you had envisioned. However, this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try to establish your own short- and long-term financial goals and then create a strategy for achieving them. In doing so, you may find it helpful to work with a financial professional.
• Contribute as much as you can to your retirement accounts. Your caregiving
obligations may be preventing you from working as many hours as you like, or perhaps even from accepting a higher-paying position. In either case, your ability to contribute to your retirement accounts may well be diminished. Nonetheless, each month try to put in as much as you can afford to your IRA and your 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored retirement plan. And if you do get salary increases, think about boosting your monthly contributions to your plan.
•Don’t rush into taking Social Security. You can start collecting Social Security as early as age 62, and you might be tempted to do so if you’re feeling some financial pressure because of your caregiving responsibilities. But your monthly benefits can be bigger if you wait until your full retirement age, which will be age 67 if you were born in 1960 or later. So, if you can find other ways to bridge this gap — possibly through a spouse’s income or your own savings — it may well benefit you to wait as long as you can before collecting.
•Maintain separate finances. If your parents are concerned about falling behind on their bills, they might suggest combining their bank accounts with yours. This may not be a good idea — if your finances get tangled with those of your parents, you could end up paying for some of their expenses, even if they can afford to do so themselves. Consequently, try to keep your finances separate.
•Create a financial power of attorney. You may want to see whether your parents will agree to give you a financial power of attorney, so you can make decisions on their behalf should they become incapacitated. Such an arrangement can help protect them and you.
There’s no sugar-coating it: Caregiving can be financially taxing on caregivers. But by taking the appropriate steps, you may be able to help reduce some of the stress involved.

ANGELS OVER SANDPOINT
A VOLUNTEER-RUN NON-PROFIT
SPREADING HOPE AND SUPPORT ACROSS BONNER COUNTY
by TAYLOR SHILLAM
Dedicated to providing aid to community members in times of need, Angels Over Sandpoint was created to continue a legacy of making a difference in the lives of friends and neighbors across Bonner County. The volunteer-run non-profit organization has provided invaluable support and resources to Bonner County residents, funding their essentials and aspirations at difficult times in life. Dedicated to a blend of fundraising and genuine fun, Angels Over Sandpoint continues to spread love across the Sandpoint community.
" ONE OF OUR THEMES HAS ALWAYS BEEN BRINGING THE COMMUNITY TOGETHER FOR FUN EVENTS. IN THAT VEIN, THE ANGELS ENJOY PUTTING ON A “PARTY” FOR THE COMMUNITY.
Q.Please share a bit about the services provided by Angels Over Sandpoint. How does Angels Over Sandpoint provide help to the local community?
A. Our programs are varied and designed to help community members and students in their time of need. Angels Over Sandpoint also provides backpacks and school supplies for hundreds of Bonner County children each September. Last year, 900 backpacks were provided for local students. We provide local families with assistance for rental deposits, car repairs, medical costs and special equipment, food and formula, gas coupons to attend their medical treatments, and much more; in short, we provide assistance in attaining whatever might be essential at a difficult time in their lives.
Our programs include yearly scholarship assistance to students who are interested in pursuing a trade certification, as well as those who have overcome hardships in their lives and would like to continue their education. Additionally, we provide assistance to students in recognition of their talents in the arts.
We also provide grants to local non-profits for essential items they need to further their goals. This allows Angels Over Sandpoint to “spread the love” to even more Bonner County residents.
Q.Please share a bit about the story behind Angels Over Sandpoint. When did it form, and how has it grown since then?
A. Angels Over Sandpoint was established in 1997 when a dear friend, Kathy Pelland, passed away. The theme of her memorial was “Kathy helped me when…” Many stories were shared that day about a person who wanted to make a difference in her friends’ lives, which became the starting theme of Angels Over Sandpoint.
We decided to have fun events to bring the community together, raise money, and give the funds away to people in need in our county. We started with about 15 members and about $3,000. Today, we have over 40 members and have given away millions of dollars. Kathy would be so proud.
Q.Angels Over Sandpoint puts a lot of fun into their work. Please share some examples of the fun within the organization.
A. One of our themes has always been bringing the community together for fun events. In that vein, the Angels enjoy putting on a “party” for the community, dressing up, and enjoying the camaraderie
of working together for the betterment of all in our community. Look for upcoming Angels Over Sandpoint events in 2025, including the Follies, our annual fundraiser event at the Panida, and the AOS Charity Golf Tournament.
Q.How can the community get involved in supporting Angels Over Sandpoint’s mission?
A. The community can offer support by attending our events, donating to our cause, and “spreading the word” about the good the Angels do in our community.
Q.What are some community partnerships that help Angels Over Sandpoint achieve its mission?
A. We work with Idaho Health and Welfare Navigation Services to earmark funds for those they cannot help with shelter, Bonner Homeless Task Force, and the Bonner County Food Bank. We provide monetary support to Priest River Advocates for battered women, and have created a program to assist various non-profits with those extras they need to serve the people in Bonner County. And, as of this year, we are partnering with Envision Community Resource Center to help even more Bonner County citizens.
Q. What do you enjoy most about being a part of the local community?
A. The opportunity to help those in need who “fall through the cracks.” In other words, we help support those who do not exactly fit the criteria for various social services, but still need a boost to overcome a difficult time in their lives.
Q.Is there anything else you’d like to share with the community?
A. The Angels Over Sandpoint is an all-volunteer grassroots group that works with love and compassion for the betterment of all Bonner County residents. All of our members volunteer their time to make what we do happen, with no expectation of remuneration – just out of love for our community and each other. We rely on our fellow Bonner County friends for most of our funding for our various programs.
By attending our events, joining in the fun, and donating to our cause, you can make a difference for someone in our community who needs that extra boost to overcome a bump in the road of life.

SPRING CLEANING: Refresh Your Home & Mind
Clear the clutter, clean with purpose, and welcome a fresh start
by LIKE MEDIA TEAM
As winter fades and the first hints of spring emerge, it’s time to shake off the dust and embrace the season of renewal. Spring cleaning isn’t just about decluttering your home—it’s a chance to refresh your space, revitalize your mindset, and set the tone for a productive and positive year ahead. Whether you tackle one room at a time or dive into a full-home transformation, this guide will help you maximize your spring cleaning efforts.
SET THE STAGE FOR SUCCESS
Before you dive in, set yourself up for an efficient and enjoyable cleaning session:
•Make a Plan: Walk through your home and identify problem areas. Prioritize tasks and break them into manageable steps.
•Gather Supplies: Stock up on essential cleaning products, such as microfiber cloths, all-purpose cleaners, trash bags, and storage bins.
•Create a Playlist: A fun, upbeat playlist can make the process feel less like a chore and more like a personal dance party.
•Set a Timer: Give yourself time blocks for each task to prevent burnout and keep things moving efficiently.
DECLUTTER LIKE A PRO
Clutter accumulates faster than we realize, making our spaces feel chaotic. A few decluttering strategies can help:
•The 12-Month Rule: If you haven’t used an item in a year, consider donating, recycling, or tossing it.
•The Four-Box Method: Label four boxes—Keep, Donate, Toss, and Relocate. As you clean, place items accordingly.
•One Room at a Time: Focus on one space before moving on to the next to avoid overwhelming yourself.
Spring is also an ideal time to sort through seasonal clothes. Pack away heavy winter gear, bring out lighter attire, and donate anything you no longer wear.
DEEP CLEAN FORGOTTEN SPOTS
We all have those areas that rarely see a dust rag or vacuum. Now is the time to tackle them:
•Ceiling Fans & Light Fixtures: Dust accumulates quickly—wipe them down with a microfiber cloth or vacuum attachment.
•Baseboards & Vents: A damp cloth or a soft-bristle brush can remove months of hidden grime.
•Cabinets & Drawers: Wipe down surfaces inside and out, and don’t forget to organize as you go.
•Mattresses & Upholstery: Vacuum mattresses, sofas, and chairs to remove dust mites and allergens.
REVIVE THE HEART OF THE HOME
The kitchen and bathroom need extra attention during spring cleaning.
•Kitchen:
~ Purge expired pantry items and old condiments.
~ Clean behind appliances and degrease your stove and oven.
~ Run vinegar through your coffee maker and dishwasher for a deep clean.
•Bathroom:
~ Replace old loofahs, toothbrushes, and shower liners.
~ Scrub tile grout with baking soda and vinegar for a fresh look.
~ Empty the medicine cabinet of expired items.
BRIGHTEN UP YOUR SPACE
Now that your home is clean, add a little vibrancy:
•Swap Out Décor: Introduce light, airy colors and fresh flowers.
•Open the Windows: Let in fresh air and natural sunlight to boost mood and energy.
•Use Essential Oils: Lavender, lemon, and eucalyptus can create a clean, uplifting aroma.
MAINTAIN THE MOMENTUM
The best way to keep your home fresh is to develop simple habits that prevent clutter and grime from piling up. Try these easy routines:
•Daily: Wipe down kitchen counters, do a quick floor sweep, and make the bed.
•Weekly: Vacuum carpets, clean out the fridge, and do laundry.
•Monthly: Check and replace air filters, deep-clean the bathroom, and declutter one area.
Spring cleaning is more than just a routine task—it’s an opportunity to reset and embrace a fresh perspective. By decluttering, deep cleaning, and refreshing your home, you’ll create a space that feels lighter, more organized, and full of possibilities for the season ahead. So grab your supplies, press play on your favorite tunes, and get ready to welcome spring with open arms!
REAL ESTATE
ESTATE
SANDPOINT, IDAHO
SPRING IN SANDPOINT:
THE BEST TIME TO BUY OR SELL
More homes, motivated buyers, and a thriving market
by LIKE MEDIA TEAM
As winter loosens its grip and Sandpoint starts to thaw, the real estate market kicks into high gear. Spring is hands-down one of the best times to buy or sell a home, and for good reason. With more homes hitting the market, motivated buyers ready to make a move, and longer daylight hours showing off properties in their best light, this season sets the stage for a successful transaction—whether you’re looking for a new place to call home or ready to sell and move on to your next adventure.
More Homes, More Choices
Spring brings a fresh wave of listings, giving buyers more options to find a home that meets their needs. Many sellers wait until this time of year to list, knowing that homes look better when the snow melts and everything starts to green up. In Sandpoint, that means stunning waterfront views, mountain backdrops, and lush yards that help homes shine.
For buyers, this is the sweet spot—more choices mean a better shot at finding the right home without settling. Spring's inventory boost gives you more flexibility, whether after a cozy cabin near Schweitzer or a lakefront retreat on Pend Oreille. Plus, with more homes to compare, buyers have a bit more negotiating power than in the tight winter market.
Luxury Properties, SIGNATURE SERVICE
PROCESS
My process is firmly rooted in high-level problem-solving, negotiation, transparency, a hyper-focused approach that prioritizes my clients’ desires, and the immaculate execution of real estate transactions.
RELATIONSHIPS
My husband and business partner, Greg, constantly reminds me that I’m a people person first. He’s right. That’s the primary reason I’m in real estate — to help people. My clients definitely feel like they can be in a friendly, professional relationship with me throughout the process of buying or selling a home, which typically extends way past the closing date.
BRAND
Tomlinson Sotheby’s International Realty is backed by the Sotheby’s brand, a nearly 300-year tradition that stands for trust, integrity and excellence. As a Sotheby’s Realty affiliate, TSIR is able to offer our clients abundant top-shelf marketing materials and exposure in toptier media outlets.
CONCIERGE SERVICE
My clientele maintains a certain level of expectation when it comes to service, and that is what I provide. That is directly aligned with Tomlinson Sotheby's tradition of excellence. "Exceeding expectations. Solving problems before they happen." I have built, and continue to build, my business on these things.
Shannon Schulz
Serious Buyers, Strong Offers
If you’re selling, spring is when buyers come out of hibernation—ready to make an offer. Many have spent the winter months scrolling listings, getting pre-approved, and figuring out exactly what they want. Families looking to move before the next school year and professionals eyeing Sandpoint’s lifestyle see spring as the perfect time to buy.
That’s good news for sellers. Spring homes tend to sell faster and for better prices than in winter. More buyers in the market mean more competition, which can drive up offers. And in a place like Sandpoint, where the demand for homes keeps growing, sellers are in a strong position to close a great deal.
Curb Appeal at Its Best
First impressions matter; spring gives homes their best shot at wowing buyers. Snowbanks give way to green grass, blooming gardens, and waterfront properties become even more inviting. Longer daylight hours mean more showings, and with natural light pouring in, homes feel brighter and more welcoming.
Outdoor living spaces—a big selling point in Sandpoint—also come back to life in the spring. Patios, decks, and docks buried under snow in winter are now inviting spots for buyers to imagine their future summer afternoons.
Favorable Market Conditions
Spring often brings competitive mortgage rates and lending incentives as banks respond to the seasonal surge in activity. Buyers waiting for the right moment to lock in a loan often find that spring is when rates are at their best. When more buyers are pre-approved and ready to go, sellers benefit from a smoother, quicker sale.
Sandpoint is becoming increasingly popular as a vacation destination and a great place to live full-time, so the spring market is prime time for anyone looking to move.
Tips for a Successful Spring Sale or Purchase
For Sellers:
•Make the most of curb appeal with fresh landscaping and a wellmaintained exterior.
• Declutter and stage your home to highlight its best features.
• Price it right—too high, and you risk sitting on the market longer than necessary. Too low, and you might leave money on the table.
• Professional photography can go a long way in helping your listing stand out.
For Buyers:
• Get pre-approved before you start shopping so you can act fast when you find the right place.
• Be ready to move quickly—spring competition can heat up, and the best homes don’t last long.
• Work with a local real estate agent who knows Sandpoint’s market inside and out.
The Best Time to Make a Move
Spring isn’t just a season—it’s a window of opportunity. Whether you’re buying or selling, the Sandpoint market is in full swing, and taking advantage of the momentum can make all the difference. With more homes on the market, serious buyers in play, and the town coming to life, now is the time to make your move.
MARKET REPORT
The Sandpoint housing market remains strong, with home values rising to an average of $595,000, up 2% from last year. Limited inventory continues to drive competition, keeping prices on an upward trend. Buyers are drawn to Sandpoint for its natural beauty and outdoor lifestyle, but higher interest rates have tempered demand slightly. Well-priced homes are still selling quickly, especially those with modern updates and energy-efficient features. Experts predict a 4.6% price increase by the end of the year, making it a favorable market for sellers while buyers face a competitive landscape.

115 YEARS OF THE LONG BRIDGE
THE
UNTOLD STORIES OF SANDPOINT’S ICONIC CROSSING
The First Avenue Bridge, aka The Long Bridge, celebrates its 115th official birthday in March. Billed as the longest wooden wagon bridge in the world, it became known as a tourist attraction as much as the intended convenience for settlers and farmers on either side of the river. Can you imagine life in Sandpoint without it?
The first Long Bridge launched straight out of First Avenue and ended on the same bank as the current bridge. There are plenty of factoids about the structure, but let’s look at some untold personal stories of its past.
You might wonder who the first person to cross the bridge was. Indeed, more than a few wanted such bragging rights. The prize goes to the determined and connected County Surveyor J.K. Ashley, Jr. During an inspection commissioned by the county commissioners, Jack got down on his hands and knees, crossed the still unfinished bridge on the narrow steel work, and loudly claimed that he was the first to cross the Long Bridge. Right place, right time, and the vision to create a story he loved to tell over and over.
The January 1910 North Idaho News reported the first ladies to cross the bridge. Mrs. L.D. Oliver and Mrs. A.G. Amsbury, both south-side residents, walked the two miles (minus 200 yards) across the bridge, choosing not to wait for their promised wagon team. This strategy helped them beat rivals who planned for the same bragging rights. Good strategy, earning their conversational notoriety. Have you walked across the bridge?
Before the bridge officially opened, the first wagonloads crossed in early January 1910. A few pundits thought this was reckless, not believing the bridge could carry a heavy load. Of course, it could; the Montana contractor had plenty of bridge-building experience, expertise needed west of the Rockies.
Eventually, after three years of labor, planning, and a $50K price tag (double the original estimate), the county commissioners accepted the final product and paid the bills in March 1910.
Visit and support the Bonner County Historical Museum, dedicated to telling our home's overlooked local stories. Check out the podcast on the complete history of the four Long Bridges.

For four consecutive years, we’ve been awarded 1st place for Best Chiropractic Clinic in Bonner County, a testament to our commitment to delivering the most thorough and high quality care possible. At Intermountain, we prioritize “quality over quantity” in everything we do, offering a variety of specialized therapies and modalities, including chiropractic and extremity care, in-depth blood lab analysis, functional nutrition, natural neuropathy treatment (through the Neuropathy Center of Idaho), sports therapy and rehabilitation, muscle therapies, and more.
Our goal is to be a one-of-a-kind clinic, proudly serving our community. Dr. Cameron VanDenBerg and Dr. Joseph Sweeney are among only six Gonstead-certified doctors in Idaho—a technique recognized as the “gold standard” of chiropractic care for over 50 years.
Your first visit with us will take about 1.5 to 2 hours and includes a comprehensive consultation, a full spine x-ray (with detailed results provided by your doctor), a muscle scan, and an individualized, specific adjustment and extremity care, or muscle therapy if needed.
We are passionate about helping entire families, from newborns to seniors, and specialize in Webster and Active Release techniques to support pregnant women throughout their pregnancies. Call us to get started on your path to better wellness at Intermountain Wellness and Chiropractic!
