Consider these year-end financial moves

s we enter the holiday season, your life may well become busier. Still, you might want to take the time to consider some financial moves before we turn the calendar to 2025.

Review your investment portfolio. As you look at your portfolio, ask these questions: Has its performance met my expectations this year? Does it still reflect my goals, risk tolerance and time horizon? Do I need to rebalance? You might find that working with a financial professional can help you answer these and other questions you may have about your investments.

• Add to your 401(k) and HSA. If you can afford it, and your employer allows it, consider putting more money into your 401(k) before the year ends — including “catch-up” contributions if you’re 50 or older. You might also want to add to your health savings account (HSA) by the taxfiling deadline in April.

• Use your FSA dollars. Unlike an HSA, a flexible spending account (FSA) works on a “use-it-or-lose-it” basis, meaning you lose any unspent funds at the end of the year. So, if you still have funds left in your account, try to use them up in 2024. (Employers may grant a 2½ month extension, so check with your human resources area to see if this is the case where you work.)

• Contribute to a 529 plan. If you haven’t opened a 529 education savings plan for your children, think about doing so this year. With a 529 plan, your earnings can grow tax deferred, and your withdrawals are federally tax free when

used for qualified education expenses — tuition, fees, books and so on. And if you invest in your own state’s 529 plan, you might be able to deduct your contributions from your state income tax or receive a state tax credit.

• Build your emergency fund. It’s generally a good idea to keep up to six months’ worth of living expenses in an emergency fund, with the money held in a liquid, low-risk account. Without such a fund in place, you might be forced to dip into your retirement funds to pay for short-term needs, such as a major car or home repair.

• Review your estate plans. If you’ve experienced any changes in your family situation this year, such as marriage, remarriage or the birth of a child, you may want to update your estate-planning documents to reflect your new situation. It’s also important to look at the beneficiary designations on your investment accounts, retirement plans, IRAs and insurance policies, as these designations can sometimes even supersede the instructions you’ve left in your will. And if you haven’t started estate planning, there’s no time like the present.

• Take your RMDs. If you’re 73 or older, you will likely need to take withdrawals — called required minimum distributions, or RMDs — from some of your retirement accounts, such as your traditional IRA. If you don’t take these withdrawals each year, you could be subject to penalties.

These aren’t the only moves you can make, but they may prove helpful not only for 2024 but in the years to come.

Q&A WITH TRUSTED ADVOCATES IN SANDPOINT

HICKEY LAW FIRM

ANDRA AND JOSH HICKEY COMBINE LEGAL EXPERTISE WITH COMMUNITY DEDICATION

Andra and Josh Hickey are the owners of Hickey Law Firm, and they have a combination of decades of legal experience and a sincere commitment to Sandpoint. From family law and estate planning to personal injury and civil litigation, they strive to guide clients through life’s challenges responsibly and knowledgeably. Since opening in 2023, they’ve committed to creating trust, being transparent, and getting results that matter. For Andra and Josh, it’s not just about practicing law—it’s about making a real difference for their neighbors and community.

"
FOR US, IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT PRACTICING LAW—IT’S ABOUT MAKING A REAL DIFFERENCE FOR OUR NEIGHBORS AND COMMUNITY.

Q. Please share a bit about your professional background and experience.

A. Andra and Josh Hickey met at the University of Idaho, where they both graduated from the College of Law. Andra has practiced law in Sandpoint since March 2013, after getting her start as an associate focusing on family law at Sandpoint Law, P.C. Josh has practiced law in Sandpoint since May of 2013, starting at the Sandpoint City Attorney’s office, followed by the Bonner County prosecutor’s office. Josh joined the team Sandpoint Law, P.C. in 2015, where he focused on criminal defense, personal injury, and general civil litigation. When Andra became a partner at Sandpoint Law, P.C. in 2017, she expanded her focus to include estate planning, probates and trust administration.

Q. How did Hickey Law Firm come to be, and how has your practice grown since it started?

A. Hickey Law Firm started in June 2023, when Andra and Josh decided that branching out together was the logical next step in their careers. After Andra’s experience as a partner, she was knowledgeable and confident in her ability to do the work required to start a law firm. Today, Hickey Law Firm maintains steady caseloads.

Q. Please share a bit about the specialty services offered within Hickey Law Firm.

A. Josh focuses primarily on personal injury law, finding it rewarding to tackle the unique challenges each case presents. His caseload also includes real estate and civil litigation. Every case is different, no matter what type, and we have seen some injuries caused by crazy circumstances. Josh has successfully handled cases for clients with injuries caused by all kinds of situations.

Andra’s specialty services include premarital and postmarital agreements, along with mediation for divorce, child custody, child support, and guardianships and conservatorships.

Q. How did you decide on your areas of focus as a law firm? What needs did you recognize within the community?

A. Andra’s areas of practice are family law, family law mediation, estate planning, and probates. Family law mediators are essential in Bonner County and surrounding counties because the judges usually order each party to attend mediation and resolve their issues before going to trial. After practicing in the local community for 11 years, Andra has recognized a constant need for family law and estate attorneys. People will continue to have babies, get married (and unfortunately, sometimes divorced), and will continue to need to ensure their estate passes smoothly to the next generations.

Josh’s areas of practice are personal injury, real estate and general civil litigation, and there are not many personal injury attorneys in North Idaho, let alone Sandpoint. While it’s unfortunate, it’s common for people to get injured; fortunately, Josh can assist in making them financially whole from the damage incurred. When it comes to real estate, Josh can help tackle the real estate disputes that tend to arise in the community due to boundary lines, easements, and contractors.

Q. What are some of the strategies and aspects of your approach to clients that set you apart as a law firm?

A. We genuinely value each of our clients and strive to provide them with the best possible result. Communication is key and we make sure

our clients know every step of the way to feel informed and confident. We understand that every client is different, so we customize a solution to the clients specific circumstances. Whether it’s careful planning, negotiation or advocacy in court, we remain focused on what matters to our clients. Developing trust and good working relationships is at the forefront of everything we do.

Q. What is most rewarding to you about the work you do? How does it feel to achieve results for your clients?

A. Our most rewarding moments are getting justice and realizing we’ve made a difference for our clients. It’s incredible to help someone get out of a challenging situation, whether it’s a family issue or getting compensation after a personal injury. Seeing a client’s relief and gratitude when we have a successful outcome is the best part of doing this work—not necessarily winning a case, but seeing clients through each issue and supporting them in the process.

Q. What is your vision for your practice moving forward? What’s next for Hickey Law Firm?

A. Our vision is to continue to do our best for each client, working with passion to help each person achieve the best outcomes possible. What’s next for Hickey Law Firm is continuing to make our presence known in the community and growing our connections as a new firm we started on our own.

Q. What do you enjoy most about being a part of the local community/business community?

A. The best part of living in Sandpoint is how connected and encouraged we are by our local businesses and residents. It is wonderful that small business owners are all here to support each other. We are inspired by how each company has its own part to play in improving the neighborhood and are grateful to be a part of that. It’s rewarding to be of service to those who live and work here and to help make the community stronger. This isn’t just work for us — it is about being part of a community that cares about people and comes together to make Sandpoint a great place to live and work.

Q. What message would you like to share with the Sandpoint community?

A. We would like to thank the Sandpoint community—to anyone we have helped or helped us in our profession, you have contributed to improving our practice. We welcome anyone to visit us at Hickey Law Firm. If you’d like to meet us, give us a call!

FROSTY FABLES of Sandpoint

DISCOVER SENSATIONAL

SEASONAL DELIGHTS

S andpoint, Idaho, transforms into a winter wonderland with the arrival of the first snowflakes. This historic panhandle town, surrounded by the Selkirk and Cabinet mountains and the expansive Lake Pend Oreille, offers a range of winter adventures and attractions that residents and tourists enjoy. If you’re an adventure-seeker looking for adrenaline rushes or just like to relax around a fire with a good book, Sandpoint’s winter wonders are sure to please.

The crown jewel of the winter season’s offerings is certainly Schweitzer Mountain Resort. Schweitzer has more than 2,900 acres of skiable area and is one of the largest ski areas in the Pacific Northwest. Skiers and snowboarders of all levels can take turns on the resort’s slopes, from first-time skiers and riders learning the tricks on the bunny hill to experts making their way down the mountain's black diamonds. There’s tree skiing to be had here, too, wind through pine trees on fresh powder. If you’d like to stretch your day on the mountain, twilight skiing is magical when the sun sets, and the mountain is framed in alpenglow. Schweitzer also has terrain parks for snowboarders and freestyle skiers, with jumps, rails, and other challenges.

The resort has many great restaurants to heat and satisfy your stomach during your stay. Apart from mountain carving, Schweitzer offers more snow-based sports and spa treatments. Snow tubing is a fun family activity where you can race down specially designed tracks on inflatable tubes and then ride the track back up to do it all over again. To keep it more peaceful, get your snowshoes on and head to one of many trails that wind through the resort, with views of the mountains above and the glaciated lake Pend Oreille below. There are snowshoe trails led by knowledgeable guides who share insights about the region's fauna, flora, and history. There’s also fat biking at the resort, where you can make the adventure on a specially designed bike with fat tires, another way to explore snowy areas.

If you’re looking to spend your winters on the flat, frozen water, not the slopes, ice fishing on Lake Pend Oreille is a Sandpoint must. This big lake – Idaho’s biggest – is an ice-fishing haven in the winter. You can pull off big rainbow trout and mackinaw with the right equipment, some patience, and your favorite food and a thermos of warm cocoa or coffee. Local outfitters like Go Fish! Guided ice fishing trips with charters are available, so you know you’re in for a great time. Ice fishing is a popular pastime, offering an easy entry point for beginners while still providing

a challenge for experienced anglers. The guides always have helpful tips and tricks to enhance your experience.

Back in town, Sandpoint’s community spirit shows through in the winter festivals and hometown gatherings. The Sandpoint Winter Carnival (February 16-25) is one of the year's most significant events, bringing together locals and visitors for 10 days of fun. Many events occur during the carnival, including the Parade of Lights and K9 Keg Pull, where dogs of all shapes and sizes race each other to pull empty kegs to the line. Live music, art exhibits, and mouthwatering food from street food vendors add to the carnival’s excitement. Also highlighted are the chili cookoff and Winter Carnival fireworks, which make a magical show of the night sky over the snowy town.

No winter trip to Sandpoint is complete without enjoying its local dining scene. Start your day with a perfectly brewed coffee from Evans Brothers Coffee, a favorite spot known for its expertly roasted beans and cozy atmosphere. Head to Sweet Lou's for lunch, where hearty comfort food is perfect for a chilly day. Enjoy a delicious meal at 113 Main in the evening, where fresh, local flavors are served in a warm and inviting atmosphere. Don’t forget to stop by City Beach Organics for a healthy, satisfying option featuring fresh, organic ingredients. Sandpoint’s variety of restaurants ensures there’s something for everyone to enjoy while soaking in the charm of this winter destination.

Those seeking an outdoor experience with a touch of luxury can’t go wrong at Western Pleasure Guest Ranch. This charming ranch offers sleigh rides through snowy meadows and forests for a classic winter experience. Cuddle under warm blankets as the sleigh glides through the serene countryside, with the fresh winter air filling your lungs and the gentle melody of sleigh bells in the background. Beyond sleigh rides, you can explore snow-covered trails on horseback, offering a unique perspective of the winter wilderness. In the ranch's cozy cabins, enjoy the warmth of wood-burning stoves and hearty breakfasts that start your day off right. Evenings are filled with campfires, hot cocoa, and memories to be cherished by the entire family.

ICEFISHING

There’s more to Sandpoint’s winter appeal than the adrenaline and festivities: there are other, more contemplative activities. A cultural cold weather escape is the Panida Theater located in downtown Sandpoint. The restored theatre stages many shows throughout the winter, including live music, theatre, and independent films. An evening spent enjoying the arts at a Panida show is a wonderful way to unwind. The theater offers a variety of programs suitable for all ages, including old-school films, documentaries, local talent, and touring shows. Its small size and historic ambiance create an unforgettable cultural experience in Sandpoint.

Nature enthusiasts will be comforted by Pine Street Woods, a neighborhood forest where quiet winter hiking and snowshoeing can be done. The roads are well-lit and meander through the tranquil forest, a place to unwind from the daily grind. There are many animals in the forest; if you’re lucky, you might see deer, foxes, or even a moose moving through the snow. Pine Street Woods is a place of peace, cold winter air, and gentle snow slush beneath your boots — for a revitalizing nature walk.

The winter markets of Sandpoint are another lovely place to immerse yourself in local culture. These markets run yearly and feature handcrafted goods, fresh foods, and gifts. Shop in the market stalls, and you will find everything from woolen hats to cheeses and huckleberry sweets. It is a great place to buy Christmas presents or memories from your trip. If you can, support the artisans and farmers on a local level, buy their handcrafted and homemade products, and share in Sandpoint’s unique vibe.

Sandpoint, Idaho, is the perfect winter getaway, offering something for everyone. From skiing at Schweitzer Mountain Resort to sleigh rides at Western Pleasure Guest Ranch, adventure and relaxation go hand in hand. Enjoy snowy trails, cozy evenings by the fire, or a night at the Panida Theater, soaking in the town’s arts and culture. With its winter markets, delicious local dining, and festive events like the Winter Carnival, Sandpoint is a destination where unforgettable winter memories are made.

SPARK JOY WITH CREATIVE CHRISTMAS Decorating Tips

Bring Christmas magic to your home with fresh, fun decorating ideas

Christmas decorating is a time-honoured tradition. We all love the idea of twinkling lights, garlands and wreaths on the front door, but sometimes it’s nice to break free from the usual and turn your creative spirit on high. If you want to create a look or feel that’s fresh for the coming Christmas season, you might be on the hunt for some out-of-the-box ideas. If so, you’ve come to the right place. Whether you’re looking to make an infusion of outdoor Christmas holiday décor or stay indoors, these tips will help you get where you want to go with an interior design that’s as festive as it is creative.

Indoors: Rethink the Traditional Minimalist

Tree magic

We tend to equate the holiday season with excess, but there’s something to be said for taking the road less travelled, and when it comes to holiday decor, that path to minimalist tree magic is sure to make a statement. Consider swapping out your full-bodied tree for a leaner, simpler look. A metal or wood tree frame decorated with select ornaments or some neutral-toned ribbon or a strand of fairy lights creates a petite, low-key look with maximum impact. The plucked look is sure to be a winner.

Nature-inspired decor

Take a stroll outside and bring a bit of the outdoors in. Consider a centrepiece or mantel display made of pinecones, dried sticks or eucalyptus stems. Paint pinecones a metallic colour, like silver, gold or copper, for Christmas magic, or keep them natural and more rustic. Pair with a strand of candles or a single lantern for a striking yet soothing holiday look.

DIY ADVENT calendars

Monochromatic palettes

While red and green will always be acceptable in Christmas decorating, consider a monochromatic look. Think icy blue, rich burgundy or even stark white, for example. Stick with a single colour palette all over your living room or dining area to create something that’s chic and cohesive. Using one colour palette from top to bottom will make your space feel pulled together, while the textured variations (plush velvet pillows, wool throws and silk ribbons) will make it dynamic and interesting.

Upside-down trees

Perhaps the most daring trend in recent years is the upside-down Christmas tree, which is a terrific showstopper when used correctly. Hang a tree from your ceiling, fully inverted or just tipped, for an otherworldly centrepiece. The upside-down tree will also save you quite a bit of floor space and give a new perspective to hanging your ornaments. Try a tabletop tree for a quirky but festive take.

DIY advent calendars

Get away from the packaged, candy-filled Advent calendars and make your own DIY version for a holiday decor that reflects your family’s style. Create an interactive calendar using envelopes, small bags or paper cones and fill them with daily treats, notes or rewards for fun new experiences (think hot cocoa date night or movie night). Hang them by a wall or across a mantel for an interactive (and perhaps more active) way to count down to Christmas.

Outdoors: Bringing the Unusual to Bold Exterior Decor

Luminous pathways

Lighting is key for outdoor Christmas holiday décor, but instead of the usual string lights, consider something that casts a soft glow across your outdoor areas. Create a luminous pathway using battery or solar lanterns filled with fairy lights, coloured bulbs or candles to make the facade of your home look warm and inviting from the second guests arrive. For a trendy twist, use paper luminaries or oversized lighted ornaments.

Unexpected color combos

Move beyond the predictable red and green exterior and experiment with bold colour combos that will make your home glow with a winter wonderland effect. Wrap colourful lights around a tree or two bushes, or around your roofline. Want to create a two-tone effect? Wrap the trunk of a large tree in one colour and the branches in another.

Vertical garden garland

If you have a trellis or fence, consider creating a vertical holiday display. Wrap lights around the slats or garlands around vertical structures, adding a bow for a touch of holiday flair. You can even hang outdoor-safe ornaments or use weather-proof greenery to replicate a garden on your vertical structures.

Themed front porch

Why not choose a decorating theme and run with it? Instead of your familiar wreath and garland combo, go for something out of the ordinary, such as a winter woodland filled with faux animals and snowflakes or a candy-inspired porch with giant candy canes and lollipops. Themed porches will make your home seem like an instant escape and hit all the right holiday notes.

Interactive yard displays

Create an interactive display in your front yard. An example could be a DIY photo station with fun holiday cutouts or a scavenger hunt with hidden or lighted ornaments or lights for a little festive fun that gets the neighbourhood involved. Fun props such as snow globes, sleighs or light tunnels are sure to add the interactive fun that your yard deserves.

The Christmas season is filled with traditions, but that doesn’t mean you can’t give those traditions a modern twist with creative holiday decorating. Whether it’s how you decorate your tree or the theme you choose for your front porch, a creative approach can help you stand out from the sea of tinsel and bows. Mixing a bit of the old with the new, or even collaborating with a designer, you’ll create a holiday wonderland that reflects your style while still capturing the festive spirit of the season.

So this year, why not break away from the norm? Give your Christmas holiday décor a refresh with some creative twists. You might find that your home needs out-of-the-box thinking to sparkle a little brighter this season!

EXPLORING SANDPOINT’S REAL ESTATE MARKET IN 2025

Key trends shaping the future of home buying, sustainability, and affordability in North Idaho

What are Sandpoint residents and potential buyers looking for in the coming years? The future of real estate in and around Sandpoint, Idaho, is evolving with new trends. Whether you’re considering moving to the Sandpoint area, selling your home, or you’re an investor, we cover the upcoming changes that you need to know about.

From people moving out of crowded city areas and relocating to more rural, suburban locations to the rise in smart homes and the demand for energy-efficient and environmentally friendly residences, you’ll learn what to expect in the local real estate market. As you’re about to discover, its natural beauty, outdoor recreation, proximity to big lakes, and easy access to modern amenities are propelling Sandpoint to become one of the fastest-growing areas in North Idaho.

Here’s what to expect.

Migration to suburban and rural areas

One of the leading trends in the future is the increase in the number of people moving out of cities to rural, suburban areas. This is a direct outcome of the remote work boom hitting the world as white-collar businesses are letting their employees work remotely worldwide. This not only enables them to lower costs associated with owning office buildings and other facilities but also allows families and professionals to no longer be tied to one location.

Home-buying - space, sustainability, and smart homes

People are increasingly looking for larger lots and natural outdoor areas, home offices, and smart home features. New-build, single-family residences are expected to cater to this trend with offerings similar to this property, which can be seen in more detail by clicking on the gallery’s first image.

Smart home consumerization

The trend in smart home consumerization is expected to continue. With more people working from home as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and the remote work boom, buyers are looking for the latest and greatest in smart home technologies. This includes features such as connected lighting systems, smart thermostats, and energy monitoring systems.

Sustainability and green living

With more consumers thinking about sustainability and the planet, it comes as no surprise that home buyers are looking at green housing and smart home technologies as a way to significantly reduce their environmental footprint and long-term energy costs. Sandpoint has many eco-friendly features and is well-positioned to benefit from this trend.

Downtown Sandpoint - urban living and vibrant community

Despite the expected increase in migration to the suburbs, downtown Sandpoint will continue to be the hub of the local community. And with that, more mixed-use developments are expected to hit the market, blending residential, commercial, and entertainment spaces into a vibrant community with a comfortable supply of homes for sale in Sandpoint ID. Downtown Sandpoint is a great place to live or work within close proximity to the local schools, shopping, restaurants, bike paths, and Lake Pend Oreille. More people will be seeking its charms, not to mention all the fantastic things to do in Sandpoint.

Rise of co-living and shared spaces

Co-living and shared spaces are rising in popularity, given the increase in housing prices. Many people will seek to save money and share a home. This solution combines privacy with savings for both singles and couples with shared expenses.

Affordability

Affordability in 2025 will continue to be a major challenge in the western United States. However, new solutions such as modular homes and tiny house communities are coming online and will benefit first-time home buyers and those looking to downsize.

Real estate transactions – AI and digitalization

People are increasingly looking to use online real estate sites and apps to search for homes, browse through listings, schedule showings, and even close real estate transactions, all online.

As we look toward the future, Sandpoint’s real estate market in 2025 will present opportunities and challenges. Whether you’re drawn to the area’s suburban growth, sustainability, or smart home features, understanding these trends will help you make informed decisions. Sandpoint remains a desirable place to call home or invest, and the town’s ability to adapt to these trends while maintaining its charm will continue to attract buyers for years to come.

ICE, COMMUNITY, AND COLD-WEATHER FUN

I

ce skating in Sandpoint brought neighbors together during the cold winter afternoons. Finding a smooth surface on the lake or at Ignatz Weil’s pond behind his First Avenue house, skaters young and old enjoyed the uniquely serene vistas of the snow-covered Selkirk and Cabinet ranges.

During WWII, the park next to Community Hall was flooded to create a skating rink for the visiting sailors from Farragut to mingle with the locals. Even

City Beach sported a frozen area for skating at times. Before the dams, Sunnyside, Oden Bay, Dover, Hope, and other lakeside shores provided the occasional skating opportunity, complete with shared hot cocoa and roasted hot dogs.
