WVote for Solid Investment Strategies

ith the presidential election just a few weeks away, the public is naturally interested in not just the outcome but what the results will mean for issues of national importance. As a citizen, you likely share these concerns — but how about as an investor? After the votes are counted — or even before — should you make some moves in anticipation of possible changes in policy?

Let’s look at the big picture first, through the lens of history. The financial markets have performed well — and at times, not so well — under Democratic and Republican presidents alike. And the same is true about which party controlled Congress.

While it might be an overstatement to say that decisions made in Washington have no effect on the markets, it’s not always so easy to draw a direct line between what happens there and how the markets perform. For one thing, political candidates often make promises that are not fulfilled, or, if they are, have different results than intended. Also, other institutions can have a significant impact on the markets. For example, the Federal Reserve, which controls short-term interest rates, can certainly affect many market sectors. And there will always be external events, such as foreign conflicts and even natural disasters, that can make short-term impacts on the investment world.

So, rather than making changes to your portfolio in anticipation of what might happen if certain candidates get elected, or even in response to actual policy changes, look to other factors to drive your investment decisions.

These factors should include the following:

• Your goals – You probably have short- and long-term goals you’d like to achieve. For your short-term goals, such as a wedding, a down payment on a house or a long vacation, you may want to invest in instruments that provide stability of principal. For your long-term goals, most important of which may be a comfortable retirement, you'll need to own a reasonable number of growth-oriented investments.

• Your risk tolerance – When you build and maintain your investment portfolio, you'll need to accommodate your individual risk tolerance. All investments carry some type of risk, but you need to be comfortable with the overall risk level of your investments.

• Your time horizon – Where you are in life is an important consideration when investing. When you are young and just starting out in your career, you may be able to focus more on growth, as you have time to overcome the inevitable short-term market downturns. But as you near retirement, you may want to consolidate any gains you may have achieved, and lower your risk level, by moving your portfolio toward a somewhat more conservative approach. Even in retirement, though, you will need some growth potential to stay ahead of inflation.

• Your needs for liquidity – As you invest, you’ll need to maintain an adequate amount of cash and cash equivalents in your holdings. Without this liquidity, you might be forced to sell long-term investments in case you have unexpected expenses.

In any case, when it comes to investing, you may want to pay less attention to what names are on the ballot — and instead “vote” for the longerterm strategies that reflect your needs and goals.

OWNER OF MOUNTAIN VIEW CONSTRUCTION AND NORTH IDAHO FLOOD & FIRE

CRAFTING DREAM HOMES AND RESTORING COMMUNITIES

Sean Gavin is in the business of both saving homes from disaster and making dream homes a reality as the owner of Mountain View Construction and North Idaho Flood & Fire. At Mountain View Construction, his team works to make his clients' visions come to life, crafting custom homes that combine modern luxury with a connection and appreciation for the natural beauty Sandpoint and the surrounding areas have to offer. At North Idaho Flood & Fire, Sean’s team works to help clients protect and rebuild the homes they love, specializing in fire and water damage restoration. Voted best of Bonner County 2024 in restoration and remodel, North Idaho Flood & Fire offers a long list of services to protect local homes and businesses from disaster.

"I’VE ALWAYS HAD A NATURAL INTEREST IN BUILDING THINGS. GROWING UP, I WAS THE KID BUILDING TREE HOUSES AND FORTS.

Sean Gavin shares how his passion for home building and construction has allowed him to help make dreams come true for homeowners across Sandpoint.

Q.What inspired you to get into home building/remodeling and home protection in Sandpoint?

A. I’ve always had a natural interest in building things. Growing up, I was the kid building tree houses and forts. It wasn’t just a pastime but something that sparked a lifelong passion in me for construction. That early passion grew into a career where I could combine my love for creating and building with helping others make their dream homes a reality.

Q.Please share with our readers a bit about you and your professional background. When did you open Mountain View Construction and North Idaho & Fire? How long has each been in business?

A. After high school, I took a short detour at Washington State University before finding my way into construction, starting at Moscow Pullman Building Supply. From there, I joined Tamarack Homes, where I gained hands-on experience and learned the ins and outs of the entire building process. After a tragic event involving the owner of Tamarack, I found myself responsible for completing some of the company’s projects, including my parents’ home in Sandpoint. That experience stayed with me, and years later, the current homeowners reached out to me for a remodel—bringing it full circle.

My journey continued at Klein’s Home Improvement, where I became certified in water and mold restoration through the IICRC (Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification). From there, I worked in new construction and restoration at Creekside Construction before joining Mountain View Construction in 2005. By May 2007, I bought the company. The restoration side grew so quickly that in 2011, North Idaho Flood & Fire became its own business. Today, both companies continue to thrive and serve our community.

Q.Please describe some of the premier services provided by North Idaho Flood & Fire.

A. When someone faces a major disaster—whether it’s a flood, fire, or mold issue—our team of trained and certified technicians is there to help. We specialize in mitigating damage quickly and effectively, ensuring the homeowner has the support they need during what’s often one of the most stressful times in their life.

Q.What are some of the key qualities that set Mountain View Construction apart from other companies in the Sandpoint area?

A. What sets us apart is the relationships we’ve built with the best subcontractors and tradespeople in the area. We’ve been working together for years, and with some, even over the past 20 years. From plumbing to concrete to heating, cooling, and excavation, we have a network of strong partnerships that will translate into superior craftsmanship in the field. But that’s not all that separates us; we all share this commitment to the client. We take their dream home as seriously as they do and bring those visions to life together.

Q.What is most rewarding to you about your work within each of your businesses?

A. With North Idaho Flood & Fire, the biggest reward is helping families recover from disasters. It’s incredibly satisfying to restore someone’s home and give them back a sense of normalcy. For Mountain View Construction, the reward comes when we hand the keys over to a client who’s been dreaming of their home for years. Seeing the excitement and joy when they move in—that’s what makes it all worthwhile.

Q.What do you enjoy most about building custom homes? What draws you to the integration of nature and luxury?

A. The beauty of building custom homes in Bonner County is unmatched. Whether we’re working on a house by the lake or up in the mountains, the natural scenery is breathtaking, and we can design homes that complement and enhance these surroundings. The sites we work on aren’t always the easiest, but those incredible views make it worth it.

Q.How long have you lived in the Sandpoint area, and what do you enjoy most about being a part of the local community?

A. I’ve called Sandpoint home since 1999, and giving back to this community is a big part of who I am. I enjoy supporting local sports leagues like the Sandpoint Affordable Football League, Sandpoint Football Foundation, and North Idaho Volleyball Club. We also donate to local cancer and veterans’ events and support a financial literacy class at Sandpoint High School. Additionally, we purchase meat from 4H to provide lunch for my employees Monday through Thursday and breakfasts on Fridays—it’s one way I like to show my appreciation for their hard work.

Q.When not serving your clients, how do you enjoy spending your time? Are you involved in any local organizations in Sandpoint?

A. I love spending time outdoors with my family, whether we’re out on the lake, hiking, or skiing. I’m also involved with the North Idaho Contractors Association, which helps keep me connected to the construction industry locally.

Q.Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers not already mentioned above?

A. I’d like to add that it’s an honor to be recognized in the community. North Idaho Flood & Fire was recently voted best of Bonner County 2024 in restoration and remodel. Mountain View Construction is currently a top-three finalist for Sandpoint’s Finest Builders. I’m incredibly proud of my team and grateful for the community’s continued support.

SANDPOINT Timeless Tales of

CURATING COMMUNITY AND CULTURE AT BONNER COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY & MUSEUM

S andpoint, Idaho, nestled on the shores of Lake Pend Oreille, is more than just a picturesque town with breathtaking views. It is a living museum, a treasure trove of history preserved in its landmarks and museums, most notably the Bonner County History Museum. With a mission to bridge the past with the present, this museum stands as a testament to the rich heritage of the region. To delve deeper into the preservation efforts and the vibrant history of Sandpoint, we sat down with Olivia Fee, the curator of the Bonner County Historical Society & Museum.

Founded in 1972, the Bonner County Historical Society has dedicated over five decades to collecting and preserving the significant stories of the Bonner County region. Olivia Fee passionately explains that their mission is to care for Bonner County's historical objects and share its stories, bringing communities together in thoughtful exploration of the past to inspire curiosity and deepen connections for the future. Located at 611 S. Ella Ave., the museum, with its iconic yellow caboose on the lawn, is more than just a repository of artifacts. It is a dynamic space that facilitates the collection and preservation of artifacts, images, manuscripts, and other printed materials relating to the history of Bonner County. The museum also exhibits these materials and encourages research, presenting educational and innovative programs that highlight local history. Fee emphasizes, "By caring for Bonner County's historical objects and sharing its stories, we bring our communities together in thoughtful exploration of the past to inspire curiosity and deepen connections for the future."

Walking through the museum, visitors can explore eleven permanent exhibits that narrate the story of Bonner County, from the Ice Age floods to the lives of its earliest residents, the Kalispel and Kootenai people. Fee highlights some of the standout pieces, such as the beautifully crafted replicas of a Salish sturgeon-nosed canoe and David Thompson's cedar plank canoe in their Early Years exhibits. These exhibits vividly portray the daily lives and survival skills of the region's indigenous people and early settlers. On the museum lawn, there is a 1908 log cabin and a Spokane International Railroad caboose, both set up as exhibit spaces in the summer. The museum's temporary exhibit, which rotates every two years, currently showcases stories of Bonner County residents' resilience and playful spirit in the face of hardship. It’s a celebration of the community's enduring spirit, a narrative woven into the fabric of Sandpoint’s history. Fee mentions, "Our eleven permanent exhibits tell the story of Bonner County – from the Ice Age floods that formed our mountains and lakes, to the earliest residents of Bonner County, the Kalispel and Kootenai people, to the settlers and how they interacted with the landscape to make a living at farming, logging, and mining."

The museum not only preserves history but educates future generations, emphasizing the importance of sharing history in ways that connect the present and future. Fee elaborates that their education programs are specifically designed to help students understand the past and relate to the people who once lived in Bonner County. With over 300,000 artifacts to maintain and creative education programs to develop, the museum's efforts are monumental. They are grateful to be supported by over 80 volunteers who contribute to these efforts, balancing the preservation of artifacts with the creation of engaging educational experiences that inspire curiosity and deepen connections. "Our job is to show the multitude of ways that history is relevant to our lives today," Fee says. "Perhaps the story of a young girl overcoming polio in 1906 helps bolster you while caring for an ill family member. Perhaps an account of a

fishing trip up a local creek reminds you to go outside and enjoy our natural wonders."

Sandpoint's history is also preserved through its landmarks, thanks to the collaborative efforts with the City of Sandpoint's Arts, Culture, and Historic Preservation Commission. Fee proudly mentions the Belwood Building, home of the Pend d'Oreille Winery, which received an Orchid Award from Preservation Idaho for its restoration efforts. Through property surveys, they can better understand their historic buildings and their needs, helping property owners honor the character of their buildings. The Historic District in the downtown core includes many of the oldest brick buildings in Sandpoint, each with its own story to tell. This partnership ensures that the town's architectural heritage is preserved for future generations to appreciate. Fee adds, "We assist the ACHP in researching historic properties, which helps property owners understand and honor the character of their buildings."

For those eager to immerse themselves in Sandpoint's history, Fee recommends visiting the temporary exhibit, which will be open until 2026. Additionally, starting October 12th, a traveling exhibit titled "Between Borders: Folk Art Exhibit" will be showcased at the Sandpoint Organic Agriculture Center during the Apple Fest. Presented in partnership with the Idaho Commission on the Arts and POAC, the exhibit will feature local folk artists and folk art collection items from the Bonner County History Museum. Fee encourages, "The exhibit is a great way for visitors to experience the bridge between old, sometimes ancient, practices and the practices that continue today,” as the exhibit highlights the continuity and evolution of cultural traditions.

The rich history of Sandpoint significantly contributes to its unique identity today. As Fee reflects, digging through their archives reveals story after story of people who worked hard to make Sandpoint a great place to live, who faced challenges with

IS Community Crucial INVOLVEMENT

determination and ingenuity, and who were generous with their time and creativity. Fee notes, “The same can be said of the people who live there today,” continuing the legacy of resilience and community spirit. The history of Sandpoint is not just a series of events but a tapestry of human experiences that have shaped the town’s character and continue to influence its present.

Fee shares that when curating an exhibit, she takes a deep dive into their collection, digging up archives and objects for display. Curating historical exhibits is a meticulous process that often reveals surprising insights. She reflects, "Sometimes I am surprised; for example, I used to think people were much more stoic and serious a hundred years ago. This is because when looking at historical photos of people, they typically are posed very rigid and emotionless." However, as she looked through her many photos and read letters collected from past years, she found evidence that people could be just as silly, fun, and expressive in the past. This realization is particularly evident in the current temporary exhibit, "Come What May, We Will Play," which features photos of people making goofy poses and creating funny scenes. While culture and customs may have changed over the years, there is still much to relate to when viewing the past, helping to make history feel more personal and relevant.

Community involvement is crucial to the preservation and curation efforts of the museum. Fee emphasizes that community members donate artifacts to the collection, as well as their time and monetary gifts. Artifact donations provide a tangible history that goes beyond their function, telling a story that expands on the local culture. Financial support from donors and sponsors is also essential to keep these items properly preserved for future generations. Fee urges people never to think that the story they know is insignificant; sometimes, something as simple as the name of a grocery store once shopped at is the missing

puzzle piece they have been looking for to complete an important story about the people and places that once populated Sandpoint.

"Never think that the story you know is insignificant- please, share it! Sometimes something as simple as the name of the grocery store you once shopped is the missing puzzle piece we've been looking for to complete an important story," Fee advises.

For locals and visitors looking to support the museum and Sandpoint's historical preservation efforts, there are numerous ways to get involved. Donating artifacts, volunteering time, and providing financial support are all vital to the museum's mission. Additionally, scheduling an oral history interview or sharing family stories can help fill gaps in the museum's knowledge. These contributions are not just acts of generosity but are crucial to ensuring that Sandpoint’s history is preserved and appreciated by future generations. Fee explains, "Community involvement plays a big role in both the preservation and curation of our museum. Our community members donate artifacts to the collection as well as their time and monetary gifts."

Sandpoint, Idaho, with its rich history and vibrant community, is a testament to the power of preservation and education. The Bonner County History Museum, under the stewardship of passionate individuals like Olivia Fee, plays a crucial role in keeping the town's heritage alive. Through its exhibits, educational programs, and community involvement, the museum not only preserves the past but also inspires future generations to appreciate and cherish their history. As Fee aptly puts it, their job is to show the multitude of ways that history is relevant to our lives today. By exploring their past, they can deepen their connections and inspire curiosity for the future. Sandpoint's story is one of resilience, creativity, and community—a story that continues to unfold with each passing day.

SOPHISTICATED Ideas for a Stylish Seasonal Home

Transform your space with chic and elegant decor for autumn and Halloween

As the leaves turn golden and the crisp air brings the promise of cooler days, autumn becomes the perfect time to refresh your home décor. While Halloween often brings to mind playful, whimsical decorations, it is entirely possible to celebrate the season with sophistication and elegance. From luxurious pumpkin displays to refined table settings, here are six high-end décor ideas to elevate your home this autumn season.

1. Luxurious Pumpkin Displays

Pumpkins are a quintessential symbol of autumn, but they don't have to be bright orange and simple. To create a more sophisticated look, choose pumpkins in muted, elegant colors like white, cream, soft green, and even deep burgundy. You can enhance their natural beauty by painting some pumpkins in metallic shades such as gold, silver or rose gold.

Arrange these pumpkins in clusters at various points around your home, such as the porch, fireplace mantle or dining table. For added texture and luxury, consider using velvet or metallic-painted pumpkins. Mixing different sizes and shapes creates visual interest and a more organic, less staged appearance. Incorporating natural elements like eucalyptus branches, dried flowers and pine cones can add depth and a rustic, yet refined, touch.

Lighting is crucial for setting the right ambiance.

2. Elegant Wreaths and Garlands

A sophisticated wreath on your front door can set the tone for your entire home. Instead of traditional autumn wreaths made from brightly colored leaves and corn husks, opt for ones crafted from high-quality materials like preserved leaves, faux hydrangeas and velvet ribbons. Adding elements like eucalyptus, dried wheat and subtle metallic accents can make the wreath feel more luxurious and unique.

Garlands are another versatile decoration that can elevate your space. Drape them along staircases, across mantels or above doorways. A garland made from lush greenery, interspersed with small gourds, white pumpkins or metallic accents, can create a chic and cohesive look. For an extra touch of elegance, incorporate delicate fairy lights or silk ribbons in complementary colors.

3. Subtle Halloween Elegance

If you love Halloween but prefer a more sophisticated aesthetic, focus on subtle, elegant touches. Replace the typical bright orange and black color scheme with a more monochromatic palette, such as black, white and silver, or even muted shades like deep purple and emerald green. White pumpkins, black lace table runners and silver candlesticks can create a haunted, yet classy, atmosphere.

Consider adding elements like delicate spiderwebs made from fine mesh, black feathers and velvet fabrics to enhance the spooky vibe without being overly kitschy. You can also use elegant glass jars filled with black sand, faux bats or white roses for a gothicinspired look. These details can transform your space into a chic, haunted haven that feels both eerie and refined.

4. Upscale Lighting and Candles

Lighting is crucial for setting the right ambiance, especially as the days grow shorter. Opt for elegant candelabras, lanterns and candle holders in finishes like brass, bronze or silver. Candles in deep, rich shades like burgundy, forest green or midnight blue can add a warm and inviting glow to any room. Black or deep purple candles can offer a more dramatic effect, perfect for creating a moody atmosphere.

Flameless candles are an excellent option for those who prefer a safer alternative to real flames. They provide the same warm glow without the risk, making them ideal for homes with children or pets. Additionally, consider incorporating string lights with a warm hue into your décor, either draped across mantels or woven through garlands and wreaths, to enhance the cozy and luxurious feel.

5. Refined Table Settings

A beautifully set table can serve as the centerpiece of your autumn and Halloween décor. Start with high-quality table linens in rich, seasonal colors or sophisticated neutrals like cream or taupe. For the tableware, choose elegant plates, perhaps with gold or silver rims, and complement them with crystal glasses and polished silverware.

Create a stunning centerpiece with a mix of fresh flowers, greenery and seasonal elements like mini pumpkins, gourds or pine cones. Consider adding candles in decorative holders to enhance the table's ambiance. For an extra touch of elegance, use place cards and cloth napkins with chic napkin rings. Small details like these can make your dining experience feel special and thoughtfully curated.

6. Sophisticated Outdoor Décor

Your home’s exterior will provide a first impression for guests,, so extending your elegant décor to the outdoors is essential. Choose understated decorations that complement your home's architecture and color palette. Topiaries, lanterns and tasteful lighting can all contribute to a welcoming and refined entrance. Stick to a monochromatic color scheme or use natural materials like wood and stone for a cohesive look. An elegant doormat and subtle seasonal touches, like a woven basket filled with gourds or an artfully arranged display of potted mums, can create a warm and inviting entrance. If you want to include Halloween elements, opt for sophisticated silhouettes, such as black cats or ravens, or understated décor like white pumpkins and minimalistic wreaths.

Embracing the elegance of autumn and Halloween doesn't mean sacrificing style for seasonal cheer. By carefully selecting high-end decor elements and focusing on a cohesive, sophisticated aesthetic, you can create a beautiful and inviting space that celebrates the season with class.

As the vibrant colors of fall begin to spread across the landscape, it's not only a time for pumpkin spice and cozy sweaters but also an essential period for homeowners to perform thorough home inspections. Seasonal checkups, particularly in the fall, are crucial for maintaining a safe, efficient and comfortable living environment. The transitional period when summer gives way to colder months presents unique challenges and opportunities to address potential issues before they become major problems. One of the primary reasons for conducting a fall home inspection is to prepare the property for the upcoming winter. Cold weather can exacerbate existing issues, making them more challenging and costly to repair. By inspecting and maintaining key aspects of the home, homeowners can prevent potential damage and ensure their property remains in good condition throughout the winter.

The roof is one of the most critical areas to inspect. Over the summer, it may have suffered damage from storms, high winds or excessive heat. Homeowners should check for missing or damaged shingles, cracks, and any signs of wear and tear. Addressing these issues promptly can prevent leaks and water damage during winter storms. Additionally, gutters and downspouts should be cleared of leaves, twigs and other debris to ensure proper drainage. Clogged gutters can lead to water overflow, which can cause damage to the roof, siding, and even the foundation of the house.

As temperatures drop, the heating system becomes crucial for maintaining a comfortable home environment. A fall inspection should include a thorough check of the furnace, boiler or heat pump. Homeowners should replace filters, ensure that the system is functioning efficiently, and schedule a professional inspection if necessary. A well-maintained heating system not only ensures comfort but also helps in energy conservation, reducing heating

costs over the winter months. Proper insulation and weatherproofing are vital for maintaining energy efficiency and comfort during the colder months. During a fall inspection, homeowners should check for drafts around windows and doors, inspect the condition of weatherstripping, and consider adding or upgrading insulation in attics and crawl spaces. Addressing these issues can significantly reduce energy loss, leading to lower heating bills and a more comfortable living environment.

The fall season is the perfect time to inspect the fireplace and chimney in homes with fireplaces. A professional chimney sweep can help address fire hazards like soot or creosote buildup. The inspection should also include checking for structural damage or blockages that could impede proper ventilation. Ensuring the fireplace is in proper working order can both enhance its safety and prepare the home for cozy winter evenings by the fire. Because colder temperatures can lead to frozen pipes, which can burst and cause significant water damage, homeowners should check for exposed pipes in unheated areas, and insulate them if necessary. Fall inspections are also a good time to assess outdoor faucets and hose bibs, ensuring they are drained and turned off to prevent freezing.

Exterior maintenance is another critical aspect of your home inspection. This includes checking the condition of siding, trim and caulking around windows and doors. Any cracks or gaps should be repaired to prevent cold air from entering and warm air from escaping. Additionally, homeowners should inspect driveways and walkways for cracks or damage that could become hazardous when covered with snow or ice. As the weather cools, pests and critters often seek warmth and shelter indoors. A fall inspection should include checking for any potential entry points, such as gaps around doors and windows, vents, or openings in the foundation. Sealing these entry points can prevent unwanted guests from invading the home during the winter months.

Conducting a thorough home inspection in the fall is an essential practice for homeowners. It not only prepares the property for the challenges of winter but also helps identify and address potential issues before they escalate. By focusing on key areas such as the roof, heating system, insulation, plumbing and exterior maintenance, homeowners can ensure their homes remain safe, efficient and comfortable throughout the colder months. Regular seasonal checkups are a proactive approach to home maintenance, ultimately saving time, money and stress in the long run.

THE SERPENT OF SANDPOINT

THE LEGEND OF THE LAKE PEND OREILLE MONSTER

In the month of October, while wandering through town, you may see some of Sandpoint’s ghouls, ghosts, and monsters. However, have you seen the year-round monster of Lake Pend Oreille? Legend has it that a giant serpent inhabits our local lake, much like Scotland’s Loch Ness Monster. We call our ancient aquatic resident the Pend Oreille Paddler. Considering our lake is the 26th largest in the world

and is wide and deep enough to be utilized by the navy for submarine experimentation during World War II, it makes sense that there are sightings and lore of a shy and mysterious creature that lurks in Lake Pend Oreille. The earliest officially recorded sighting was in 1944, and sightings over the years describe a gray serpentine creature. Believer or not, the Paddler is an icon and part of Sandpoint’s culture.
