When you invest, you’ll find that knowledge is power. The more you know about your investment choices, and who is offering them, the better prepared you’ll be to make the right decisions. This diligence can also help protect you against investment scams.
How widespread is this activity? Consider this: Investment fraud losses totaled more than $4.5 billion in 2023, according to the FBI’s Internet Crime Report.
Here are some of the most common types of investment scams:
• Cryptocurrency – Not all cryptocurrency offers are scams, but many are. The scammers will contact you via social media, claiming they’ve made a lot of money in crypto and are willing to help you do the same. They may direct you to a website or app to invest, but the “company” taking your money may not even exist, and, after taking your money, may disappear.
• Investment programs – These programs claim to have “proven” strategies that can enable you to get rich by investing in financial products. But these strategies are dubious at best and can cost you thousands of dollars that could otherwise go into an investment plan based on your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon.
• Real estate – Typically, a real estate scam tries to get you to invest in a “world-class” or “luxury” property development, but these properties may take years to build, if they’re built at all. Also, various real estate “seminars” claim they can teach you how to get wealthy by buying and selling real estate, but these programs are expensive and usually worthless.
• Gold and other precious metals – Scammers who call themselves “rare coins” merchants may try to sell you gold coins, bullion or other types of precious metals, claiming that these assets will always go up in value (which isn’t true) and that “now is the best time to act.” You can find legitimate ways to invest in precious metals, possibly through mutual funds, but you’ll need to determine whether these assets can be an appropriate part of your investment portfolio.

So, how can you avoid these scams? Here ae some suggestions from the Federal Trade Commission:
• Don’t be pushed into snap decisions. Scammers will pressure you to act quickly because “space is limited” in an investment offering or a “special deal” won’t last long. If someone won’t give you time to consider an offer, it’s not worth considering.
• Be suspicious of “risk-free” claims. All investments carry risk, and no variable investments can claim to provide “guaranteed returns.” If an individual or organization downplays the risk of an investment and doesn’t want to provide risk disclosures, just walk away.
• Ask about licensing or registration. Legitimate investment professionals must be registered with the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) and be licensed by your state’s securities regulator before they can sell you any investment product. You can check the status of an individual or firm by using FINRA’s BrokerCheck tool at brokercheck.fina.org.
• Do some research. You can search online for the name of the company or individual offering you an investment opportunity. By entering terms such as “review,” “scam,” “fraud” or “complaint,” you may well find that other people have experienced problems or been victimized.
To achieve your financial goals, you’ll likely need to invest for decades — so, be wary of scammers who claim to offer a shortcut to success.

Winter Indoor Gardening: Create Your Green Oasis
Simple tips for nurturing fresh herbs, veggies, and plants
While cold weather slows down outdoor gardening, it certainly doesn’t have to stop your growing efforts. There’s plenty of opportunity for indoor gardening in the winter — and when the snow starts falling, you can still successfully grow a variety of plants, from herbs and vegetables to other greenery. Whether you’re a seasoned gardener looking to keep growing through the winter or new to gardening and ready to create an indoor oasis, this guide will help you get started.
I. Seeds of Success
When it comes to maintaining an indoor garden, especially in the cold season, the key to successful winter gardening is choosing plants that will grow or survive in your home’s unique environment. Most gardeners report success with herbs from seeds in their containers and free-growing inside. Basil, mint, rosemary, and thyme are easy-to-grow perennials that produce plentiful produce and fragrant fresh flavors that dried grocery store herbs can’t match. Leafy greens such as lettuce, spinach, and arugula are excellent cold-season plants that grow quickly, can be harvested multiple times in containers, and offer a convenient way to enjoy fresh, organic produce right at home. Dwarf fruit trees such as lemons and limes can make for the ideal centerpiece of your indoor oasis – and a surprising decorative flourish for your living space.
II. Light Up Your Life
When it comes growing plants indoors year-round, especially during the cold months when sunlight is at a premium, success is often due to proper lighting. Plants need light, and a lot of it — six to eight hours of good sunlight per day when measured outside. That’s why, when gardening indoors, a grow light is a must. LED grow lights, in particular, are best for this because they produce the correct wavelength of light for photosynthesis, don’t take up a lot of space, and won’t overheat your home. Position them above your plants so the light is spread over them evenly, depending on their size. Often, a single grow light can support multiple plants, ensuring each gets what they need. Most grow lights also come with a timer, making it easy to manage light exposure throughout the day without constantly checking on them.
Temperature and humidity are essential to your at-home indoor garden, especially as the plants navigate the cold season. During the winter, most houseplants thrive in 40-60% humidity. During the colder months, you may notice your heater running at full blast, filling your home with dry air and affecting the indoor environment. You may need to add humidity to the mix. The easiest ways to do this are to add a humidifier near where your plants are growing or set out water trays that will evaporate on their own.
As many of us heat our homes in the winter, paying attention to the temperature is vital. While you might enjoy staying cozy when the heater runs at full blast, most plants prefer a more moderate temperature range to thrive in 65 to 75 degrees. Keep them away from drafts and heating vents, avoiding temperature swings that might otherwise stress your plants. You can use a thermometer to measure the temperature around the plants and make adjustments where necessary to ensure that your plants love their living environment.
Hydroponics is a type of gardening where you skip the soil and place plants in water mixed with nutrients, which can be an ideal method for container gardening. Plants flourish with this method, especially when grown indoors or in smaller spaces, because it is the perfect method to keep things clean, dry, and easy to deal with. A system like this may initially seem complicated, but there are simple ways to make hydroponics work for you. Whether growing

There are so many plants that you can grow in your home this winter, and one of the easiest is microgreens, which require consistent watering for optimal growth. Once set up, these tiny sprouts of vegetables and herbs, grown from seeds, can be harvested and enjoyed with minimal effort. Radish, sunflower, and broccoli are some of the simplest microgreens to grow, requiring only a shallow tray on your windowsill and a balanced fertilizer for optimal results. To give your microgreens the best chance to thrive, use hydroponic grow mats or coconut coir for an easy, low-maintenance setup that encourages healthy growth.

In 2017, the 219 was remodeled to reflect its 1937 origins while incorporating modern amenities, especially for live music lovers. A state-of-the-art sound system was installed, with speakers inside and out on the patio and sound panels to enhance the acoustics. A small, portable stage was added, and a sound tech collaborates with entertainers weekly to ensure an optimal experience. The live music scene has become a hallmark of the 219, drawing local and regional talent. Most shows are free, with a few special ticketed events held throughout the year.

“We want to bring the best quality product with the best customer service and prices,” says Justin. “I’ve found that consistency across those three areas is key to maintaining the health of our business, retaining great employees, and having amazing patronage.” This focus on quality and consistency drives 113 Main’s success, reflecting the Dicks’ passion for creating memorable experiences.
Justin is a dedicated contributor to the Sandpoint community. He has served as President of the Bonner General Health Foundation and participated as a Sandpoint Rotarian for over 13 years. He’s supported local non-profits through efforts like Dine Out for a Cause, where proceeds benefit participating organizations. As a sponsor of the Sandpoint Rotary Club’s CHAFE 150 bicycle ride, he has provided meals to more than 500 cyclists and volunteers annually. “Giving back and participating is part of what makes Sandpoint such a special place,” Justin shares.

113 Main is also celebrated for its full bar with handcrafted cocktails and unique whiskies. “We select fresh ingredients, high-quality alcohols, house-made mixers, and syrups, and precisely measure, stir, and garnish,” Justin notes. Rare and unique whiskeys elevate the bar experience, offering selections unavailable elsewhere in the region.
Its ambiance balances historical charm with modern touches. “For those who remember the original Café Trinity on 1st Street, we have much of the same vibe: intimate, historical, elegant, with a throwback to Sandpoint’s early days,” Justin describes. With its versatile setting, 113 Main is ideal for date nights, casual gatherings, and special celebrations.
Among the restaurant’s achievements, Justin is particularly proud of resuming seven-day lunch and dinner service. “After COVID, many restaurants, including my own, had to close a couple of days a week to deal with the lack of staff,” he says. “I have been fortunate to have an amazing staff that has been able to get us open full-time.”
Justin credits the community for the restaurant’s success. “Thank you to all of our customers and the community. The support we’ve received has been incredible. Opening a restaurant in a small town is challenging, but with the help of this community, we’ve created a dining experience everyone can enjoy.”

What began as a mobile pizza oven has grown into two thriving brick-and-mortar restaurants. Laura and Seth Carey couldn’t be prouder of Versalia Pizza. Their gratitude runs deep for those who have supported their vision along the way.
Laura reflects on the early days and the decision to expand. “It wasn’t too long into our first season as a mobile food vendor when people started asking, ‘Where can we find you in the winter?’” she recalls. “We had customers who ordered several pizzas and froze them to savor during the ‘pizza drought’ while we were shut down over the winter.” Within a few years, after operating in the spring, summer, and fall, they were approached by Jim Frank, Greenstone’s owner, at the Liberty Lake Farmers Market. His suggestion to establish a brick-and-mortar location in Kendall Yards paved the way for their next chapter. In 2014, Versalia Pizza opened its doors year-round, much to the delight of its loyal customers.
This past summer marks two major milestones for the Careys: 15 years with their mobile pizza oven and 10 years at their Spokane Kendall Yards location in Washington. Seth and Laura attribute their ongoing success to a focus on relationships—both with customers and employees. “We have listened to our employees’ ideas, learned from them, and improved because of them,” Laura says. “We owe a lot of our success to employees who have come and gone, and shared a little piece of their wisdom with us along the way. That, and a lot of hard work and hard discussions.”
When asked what they are most proud of, the Careys point to the obstacles they’ve overcome in their 15 years of business. “We have dealt with all sorts of challenges along the way, from competitive vendors who could be heard saying, ‘I bet they don’t sell one slice of pizza’ at our first market, to weather, to heat stroke from doing too much next to the oven in the hot summer air,” Laura explains. “The highlights were always proving the naysayers wrong, as well as really getting to know the customers who would follow us from event to event, enjoying our delicious offerings, and now still frequent us at the restaurants.”
As they reflect on their journey, Seth and Laura are deeply thankful for their community’s support and the meaningful relationships they’ve formed. “From long-time customers to employees to friendships that have been born out of this business, it truly makes all of it worth it,” Laura smiles.

John Grollmus and Brad Fosseen have been more than restaurateurs in the Inland Northwest. For nearly three decades, they’ve built a family. The two lifelong friends started with a dream to create a welcoming restaurant and have since expanded their original vision into a community-focused collection of dining spots: Moon Time in Coeur d’Alene, The Porch in Hayden Lake, and The Elk Public House, Two Seven Public House, and El Que in Spokane. Each location is a beloved staple, offering delicious food and a sense of belonging for patrons and employees.
John moved to Spokane in 1974, developing his skills in various restaurants before completing the hotel and restaurant management program at Washington State University. After gaining success in the corporate restaurant world across the West Coast, he returned to his roots, eager to create something unique in Coeur d’Alene. Brad, a Spokane native, has always appreciated the area’s natural beauty and community spirit. His hospitality skills developed through years in the industry, and he shared John’s vision of a restaurant with a warm, local feel.
Their first venture, Moon Time, opened in Coeur d’Alene in 1996, followed by The Elk Public House in Spokane’s South Hill in 1999. A few years later, they launched El Que in 2001, then expanded with The Porch in Hayden Lake in 2003. Their most recent addition, Two Seven Public House, opened in Spokane in 2008. From the beginning, their philosophy has been straightforward: serve high-quality, affordable food in a comfortable atmosphere while prioritizing employees and customers. This guiding principle defines their approach to business.
Their recipe for success goes beyond good food and ambiance—it’s the people who make it possible. With over 100 employees across their restaurants, Brad and John believe that consistency and employee care are the keys to a successful restaurant family. “Employee retention helps create a consistent environment,” John explains. “Seeing the same friendly faces and having a long-tenured kitchen staff ensures that guests always experience top-notch service and food.”

And what better way to do that than to make people do a double take when they see our logo on a bottle?” she explains. The updated labels retain the wildlife artwork of Floyd A. Broadbent, a defining feature since the winery’s inception. The new design, created by Laura from Terra Cotta Designs, incorporates Broadbent’s “Standing California Quail,” ensuring the winery’s heritage remains front and center.
Latah Creek’s N Collection is another standout, celebrating Natalie’s 20 years as a winemaker. This special edition reflects her deep connection to Washington’s diverse wine regions. “I aim
to highlight some of these wines by sourcing high-quality, bulk, finished wines,” Natalie shares. The collection currently features four unique releases:

It just takes commitment and passion,” she says.

Natalie and her father oversee all winemaking processes, a rarity in an industry often marked by large-scale operations. “I am proud to say that my dad and I are the only ones who do any winemaking work, so we can honestly say we intimately know everything done to our wines,” Natalie shares. This level of involvement extends to their tasting room, where visitors are warmly welcomed into what feels like the family’s home.
Reflecting on the winery’s journey, Natalie is proud to be part of Washington’s first father-daughter winemaking team. “I didn’t realize the significance behind our joint efforts,” she admits. “Most veteran winemakers would retire when they have someone to step into their role, but instead, my dad stayed. This hearty gumbo features a perfectly dark roux, slow-cooked for hours, infused with aromatic spices, and packed with roasted bratwurst, shredded chicken, and tender bay shrimp. With every bite, you’ll taste the warmth of spices like oregano, thyme, and cayenne pepper, balanced by the freshness of Anaheim chiles and tomatoes. Served over Dirty Rice, this gumbo is a go-to for a satisfying, flavorful meal that exemplifies Moon Time and sister restaurants Geno’s, Moon Time, The Elk, and The Two Seven bold, comforting cuisine.
Ingredients Method
• 4 cups flour
• 1 cup canola oil
• ¾ cup olive oil
• 1 ½ tablespoons each: oregano, thyme, chili powder, chili flakes, file (powdered sassafras leaves), black pepper, salt
• 1 ½ teaspoons cayenne pepper
• 1 ½ bay leaves
• ¼ cup garlic, chopped fine
• ½ gallon warm chicken stock, preferably homemade
• 1 cup tomato juice
• 1 cup clam juice
• 1 ½ yellow onions, chopped
• 2 stalks celery, chopped
• 1 ½ green peppers, chopped
• 1 ½ red peppers, chopped
• 4-5 Anaheim chiles, chopped
• 2-3 large tomatoes, chopped
• 4 bratwursts, roasted at 400°F for 30 minutes, cooled and cut into chunks
• 1 whole chicken, roasted at 400°F for approximately 80 minutes, then cooled and shredded
• 1 ½ cups bay shrimp
• Combine the flour and oils in a large stockpot over low heat for approximately 4 hours, stirring regularly until the mixture reaches a dark caramel color. Add the spices and garlic, mixing thoroughly.
• Remove from the heat and slowly add the warmed stock, stirring until smooth. The mixture should be the consistency of thick pudding.
• Add the tomato, clam juices, chopped vegetables, and roasted bratwurst. If the mixture seems too thick, add more stock or water.
• Cook over low heat until the vegetables are soft and translucent, about 5 hours. Cool overnight in the refrigerator.
• To serve, reheat and add shredded chicken and bay shrimp. Taste and adjust seasonings as needed. Serve over steamed rice.
