When Gleason first began, she knew she would need more than just music to draw people in. But what was that extra element going to be? She and a friend considered showcasing vintage cars. Gleason appealed to locals, going to door to door asking those with vintage cars to bring them to the event. That first year, there were 26 cars, and by the third year, it had grown to over 150. This year’s 30-year celebration promises to be bigger and better than ever! On Thursday, May 14, the weekend kicks off at the Panida Theater with the 11th annual Rock ‘n’ Roll Heaven. Sure to be a sellout, this show features Justin Shandor, Lance Lipinsky and Bobby Brooks Wilson who will keep everyone on their feet with their Elvis, Jerry Lee and Jackie Wilson impersonations. On Friday evening at 6pm, the Classic Car Parade, featuring hundreds of unique vintage

Following the parade will be the street dance at Jeff Jones Town Square where everyone from young kids to adults can dance the night away. If you are looking for something more adult oriented, there will be a show and dance at Bonner County Fairgrounds. The evening will feature Rocky and the Rollers and the Crests featuring Tommy Mara. Saturday will bring an opportunity to see the classic cars up close with the downtown car show, which will run from 9am to 4pm. Following a day downtown, you will want to get into your dancing shoes and head up to the Bonner County Fairgrounds where none other than Frankie Avalon will serenade the crowd. Also appearing will be the Dixie Cups and another appearance by Rocky and the Rollers. The weekend will wrap up with the traditional Aspirin Rally 5K Fun Run and Car Rally starting at Second Avenue Pizza on Sunday at 10am, followed by a car rally at 11:30am. Lost in the ’50s is a long standing tradition for not just Sandpoint residents but many throughout the country. Owned by Barbara and JP Carver, who purchased the franchise in 2011, Curves has transformed the lives of many women. “We are famous for the 30-minute circuit with a coach,” explained Barbara. “The circuit works every major muscle group with strength training, cardio and stretching.” Because an exercise routine benefits those of all ages and abilities, Curves provides a complete workout model that allows each woman to work at her own level while building strength and endurance, and it’s all done in a 30-minute workout. “Our members range in age from 18 to 90 years old,” said Barbara. “There is always a coach available to monitor and assist members.” There are various programs, including some that include a weight loss plan, such as Curves Complete. “With Curves Complete, women have a fully integrated personalized weight loss and weight management solution,” said Barbara. In addition to a fitness program, it also comes with a customizable meal plan and one-on-one coaching and support. “Each Curves Complete Coach has completed a certification program developed with the Cleveland Clinic, one of the most respected hospitals in the country,” shared Barbara. Each month there is a new workout, and the best part is that the exercises are for all fitness levels with a goal to ramp-up metabolism and transform one’s figure. They are offered at specific class times in addition to the circuit. “Recently we have added classes concentrating on body basics, including core strength and balance,” said Barbara. They have also incorporated the increasingly popular zumba to their workouts. There is a circuit class with zumba each Wednesday afternoon as well as one to two Saturdays each month. The staff at Curves has helped many women help regain confidence and improve their health. Beverly is the manager at Curves and the coaches are Kristy, Connie and Crista. “They all provide great support and training for our members as well as contributing to a fun atmosphere!” said Barbara.

Helping many women improve their quality of life is extremely rewarding for Barbara and her staff, and they are grateful for the friends they have made along the way. “Our success is due directly to the fantastic women who are our members. They show up regularly, work to increase and maintain their health and strength and serve as a great support group to others,” said Barbara.

Eager to give back to the community, the team members at Curves participate in many volunteer activities including Relay for Life and conducting an annual food drive to benefit Bonner Community Food Bank. That is what propelled the Sandpoint High School dance team to a third place finish at the state competition in March. Coach Alyssa Remsen is extremely proud of the 16 young women on her squad. “The biggest strength of the team is their ability to work with each other. If someone is struggling with a particular move or section of choreography, the rest of the team is extremely supportive and helpful,” said Remsen. “As a coach, it’s an incredible thing to see 16 teenage girls working together to be the best they can be in their sport.” While the girls were nervous to perform their four routines at state, Remsen said they were professional and never let their nerves show. “I could not be more proud of them,” she said.

Specialty Pizza SHS Cheerleading “Going to state lets them shine with all their hard work,” said SHS cheer coach Lori Gedrose of her hardworking squad at Sandpoint High School. “This includes tumbling, performing stunts, jumps, dance and cheers.” And shine they did. The team is comprised of four young men and 16 young ladies. At the state competition in Boise in March, the all-girl stunt team took fourth place and the coed routine also came in fourth. “This is a great accomplishment for SHS and the cheerleaders as there hasn’t been a coed group that has competed at state before,” said Gedrose. Cheerleading is not like other sports, which are mostly seasonal. This team practices throughout the year and three times each week during the summer. With only one senior on the squad, Gedrose said they have a bright future ahead of them. “They will still definitely accomplish many more skills before they graduate.” One important quality the team possesses is an ability to trust one another. With stunts and flips, there are a lot of things that could go wrong. But because of the level of trust they have in each other, they are able to perform and succeed. “Without everyone working together as a group, we couldn’t have such hard, impressive skills that everyone loves to watch,” said Gedrose.
