Ideas for Healthy Hydration on the Go
O
n sunny days when you’re out and about, it can be easy to forget to drink enough water.
But healthy hydration, especially during the warmer months, is of the utmost importance. On hot days, your body naturally uses more water, and health experts say you should replenish every ounce you lose. For many people, the key to drinking enough fluids is a matter of convenience - keeping healthy beverages always within reach. The American Dietetic Association suggests drinking between eight and 12 cups of water a day. Though this may seem like a lot, carrying a water bottle can help you meet this quota with ease. Stash one at work, in the car and in your bag so that you always have one nearby. Another healthy option is tea. It naturally contains flavonoid antioxidants and is a healthy way to stay hydrated. Bob Greene, exercise physiologist and trainer to Oprah Winfrey, recommends Lipton tea in his book The Best Life Diet. But when it’s hot outside and you’re on the move, you may not want to wait for freshly brewed tea to cool down. For an easy and time-saving alternative to the typical method of hot brewing, try Lipton Cold Brew.
Made through a unique patented process in which natural black tea leaves are treated soon after being harvested, this tea brews directly in cold water - yielding refreshing iced tea in minutes and eliminating the wait for hot water to cool down. Cancer. What comes to mind when you hear the word? Nearly everyone will instantly have a vision of someone in his or her life who has been touched by the disease. A mother, father, friend, sibling, or even a child. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, each year 12.7 million people worldwide learn they have cancer, and 7.6 million people die from the disease. Simply put, cancer does not discriminate. Young, old, male, female, and even those who lead the healthiest lifestyles are at risk. Fortunately for those in North Idaho, there are organizations that are able to help cancer patients and their caregivers in many, often unique, ways. Among those groups are Community Cancer Services (CCS), Celebrate Life, Bonner Community Hospice and Angels Over Sandpoint. All are separate and unique in the services they offer; yet all unite to help those who are often at the lowest point in their lives. Their support of not only the community, but of one another’s mission is one thing that makes them so special. Another unique characteristic is that two of these organizations were founded by local women, CCS by Heather Gibson and Celebrate Life by Jenny Meyer, both of whom battled cancer for 8 years before passing away in 2006 and 2008 respectively. Friends through their common battle, they both saw a need, they did what they could to help others like them, and it is their selfless missions that live on today. Over the years CCS has provided hundreds of patients with services that include gas vouchers to help in transportation to and from appointments, volunteer drivers, a lending library with information and support for cancer patients, prescription assistance, and cancer support groups for the patient, caregivers and children of cancer patients. There are no income guidelines to qualify and the services offered continue to evolve as each patient’s needs dictate. Celebrate Life is a Fun Run and Walk that began in 2004 by Jenny Meyer, with the
help of her sister Julie Walkington and January Tuinstra, a colleague of Julie’s at Bonner General Hospital. Today, Julie continues to honor her sister through Celebrate Life, which is in its tenth year. “Over the past 9 years, Celebrate Life has raised nearly $140,000. These funds are distributed through Bonner General Hospital’s Outpatient Clinic, Home Health, Hospice and
Kootenai Cancer Center at BGH,” said Julie. “Funds are used for such things as grocery and gas vouchers, firewood, house cleaning, massages, airfare, medication, monetary assistance, medical equipment and other special and unique requests.” Bonner Community Hospice is another entity that plays an extremely critical role for not only those cancer
patients who are in need of end of life care, but also their families. With a large percentage of their cases being patients fighting cancer, Bonner Community Hospice and Home Health Manager Tami Feyen said fundraising is vital so that Hospice can continue to serve all clients, including those without insurance or who cannot afford their services. “Bonner Community Hospice serves all Hospice eligible clients regardless of ability to pay,” said Tami. It was a few years ago when Tami Feyen was contacted by then CCS Board President Stefanie Nostdahl about a combined fundraiser for area cancer patients. She was intrigued. “After a few meetings with CCS and the Celebrate Life board, we put together a plan to try to raise funds to support those with cancer in Bonner and Boundary counties,” said Tami about the birth of Rock Out Cancer Concert fundraiser. “We invited Angels Over Sandpoint to partner with us as well. The rest has been history.” Angels Over Sandpoint is a non-profit organization whose mission is to assist individuals and families in need. In over 10 years the organization has raised in excess of $400,000 and has donated everything from food, money, volunteer time and helping hands to fulfill its mission of helping neighbors in need. And that includes cancer patients. On July 13th these four entities will host the Third Annual Rock Out Cancer Concert at Beyond Hope Resort. It is a chance for friends and families to gather together, enjoy exceptional music, good food, maybe even camp out, and help raise money that will benefit others in the community who are struggling with a cancer diagnosis. “Due to the economy a lot of our grants have gone away,” said Stefanie Nostdahl, adding that with an annual budget of approximately $100,000, CCS works hard to make sure their fundraisers are successful.

But she emphasizes that it is non only the cancer patient who finds support through these organizations, but their loved ones as well. Nostdahl too is grateful for the support of the other non-profits who work so hard to help cancer patients. “We have built a relationship among these four entities and we all work closely together, especially when it comes to services and support that are available,” said Nostdahl.

As for Julie, each time she is able to help someone going through the very thing her sister did for the 8 years she valiantly fought cancer, she is able to spread a little bit of the happiness that her sister Jenny brought to everyone every day. “From her experiences with her own cancer diagnosis, Jenny realized unexpected gestures-simple, unique and practical-are welcomed and appreciated by those with cancer and their families that support them,” said Julie who considers it a privilege to carry on her sister’s work. Tickets for Rock Out Cancer are $25 each and kids 12 and under are $5 and are available at the Bonner General Hospital Gift Shop, Eichardts, Sandpoint Sports and Sandpoint Furniture. There is parking for boats and vehicles but boat slips are limited so please call Beyond Hope Resort ahead of time to reserve a spot.

Greener Pastures Turf Services, LLC Whether you have a small flower bed infested with weeds or a 40-acre tract filled with spotted knap-weed, Greener Pastures Turf Services has what you need. The company, owned by Eric and Jennifer Christoferson, has been operating in Sandpoint since 2007, a testament to its superior reputation and loyal customer base. hether you are 25 or 55, retirement planning should always be a factor when it comes to preparing for your financial future. But the reality is that while many envision a retirement lifestyle that includes traveling and being able to enjoy other leisurely activities, few are financially equipped to live out that dream. Complacency? Denial? Lack of knowledge? Whatever the reason, a written financial plan that includes an estimate of retirement expenses, an accounting for inflation and a calculation of income that assets will produce during retirement years, is something everyone should have if they want to live out their later years in the lifestyle they imagined. Research shows that while almost threequarters of baby boomers envision a retirement life that included vacations, less than half feel they can afford the retirement lifestyle they had worked so hard for. The average gap between reality and what is truly needed is not a matter of a few thousand dollars. On average it is a quarter of a million dollars. Furthermore, of those polled in a recent survey, 22% stated that they had less than $250,000 allotted for retirement. So with the downturn the economy has experienced over the last decade, what are the assets upon which people are depending for their retirement income? You may be surprised to learn that even with the significant decrease in home prices, people are depending upon the equity in their home to be a large source of income upon retirement. One possible explanation for this is that people may feel that their homes, while worth less than before the recession, are a more reliable investment than what they have experienced through other investment opportunities. While a heavy reliance on home equity may seem like a plausible plan for retirement, the problem lies in the fact that many of these same homeowners, roughly 37%, report that they are not on track to pay off their mortgage. While many nearing retirement age are concerned about their financial situation,

the major concern appears to be with their health. But what people may not realize is that the two actually are closely related. According to the Employee Benefits Research Institute, by 2020 a 65 year old married couple without an employer based health plan, who incur average medication expenses, could require a total of $365,000 to $454,000 to pay for Medigap, Medicare Part B and Part D premiums and out of pocket prescription expenses – something over 50% of those surveyed have not considered. So what does all this information mean? The importance of consulting with a professional cannot be underestimated. They will look at your overall current financial picture, calculate projections of income from assets, factor in inflation, and best of all, help you realize that your retirement dream could in fact be your reality. And just when is the right time to begin this investigation into your retirement outlook? f you have ever wondered where that bike path along Highway 2 ends, be sure and venture all the way to Dover -whether by bike, foot or car - and see what surprise there is in store for you! Dover Joe and Roll is a quaint place that is a great getaway for a morning cup of coffee, breakfast sandwich on homemade bread, or a freshly baked muffin or cinnamon roll. With a beautiful deck, it is also an opportunity to enjoy the sunshine the summer months offer. Owned and operated by husband and wife Rick Hyde and Diane Zenier, Dover Joe and Roll first opened in October 2005. “It’s very personal,” said Rick referring to the fact they have done all of the work themselves. But they were forced to close about two years ago during which time Rick successfully fought cancer. This past April the couple was thrilled to reopen and welcome back all their customers whom they also consider friends. “We’ve been so happy with all the customers who have returned,” said Rick adding that the support he received from the patrons of Dover Joe and Roll during his battle with cancer was amazing. Open from 6am to 2pm seven days a week, Dover Joe and Roll offers locally roasted Evans Brothers Coffee, as well as specialty teas, Italian sodas and fruit smoothies. “All of our smoothies are made with real fruit,” said Diane. Rick and Diane take pride in the fact that all of their food is homemade, including the bread for the deli-style lunch sandwich and
the breakfast sandwich on which they also offer fresh tomato and spinach. When their tomato plants start to grow, they will need to go no further than the restaurant’s deck to get those tomatoes. There are not many places that can offer that kind of freshness! In early July, Rick and Diane will be expanding their lunch menu to include barbeque chicken, Caesar salad and a homemade roll. While Diane loves to bake, Rick’s specialty is preparing all his own glazes and dressings. The box lunch will be perfect for people wanting to pick something up to take out on the boat or grab a homemade meal on the run. The two agree that because the highway no longer runs by their place their business has less exposure. But that is more than okay with them. Nothing can beat the peacefulness of the setting now that they do not have semitrucks speeding by. With a spacious deck complete with table and chairs just the right size for small children and an area for four legged visitors to enjoy a fresh drink of water, it is a wonderful place to enjoy good food. When you stop, be sure to visit with Rick and Diane. The friendly atmosphere and freshly made food will make you feel like you are with longtime friends. Ingredients: • 4 salmon filets (about 6 oz. each) • 1 Tbsp. Litehouse® Instantly Fresh Dill • 1 fresh lime, cut in half • Salt & pepper to taste • 1/2 cup Litehouse® Honey Mustard or, • Litehouse® Lite Honey Dijon Vinaigrette Directions: Rinse the salmon filets under cold water and pat dry. Squeeze the juice from l/2 lime over the filets; season with salt and pepper. Preheat grill or broiler. Grill the salmon on high heat to desired doneness, but do not over cook. Whisk dressing and dill in a small bowl. Add the juice from the other 1/2 of lime, mixing well. Spoon the sauce over the cooked filets and serve. Serves 4.

arson Magee is like most other 10 year old boys in north Idaho. He enjoys getting outside and making the most of his summer break from school. He has dreams of becoming a movie actor and is honing his skills on his very own unicycle. He’s already working parttime as a clown with his mom. And that’s just the beginning of his story. Already at such a young age, Carson has been on a game show, won a free patent search for an invention, appeared on local TV and in newspapers, given speeches to large groups of adults, helped out with charity bike rides, and met many of our local politicians. It’s a schedule that most adults would have a difficult time managing, but Carson does it with a smile and never on eight hours of sleep.
“At the time I didn’t understand it,” remembered Carson. “I thought they were just going to give me some medication and it would all go away.”
When Carson was 7 years old, his mom, Fondra, noticed a rash on her young son and observed that he seemed to be drinking more water than usual. She was just about to take off on a long trip and decided they better go have it looked at by a doctor. What both Carson and his family thought would be cleared up in a couple of days turned into a life altering diagnosis. Carson has type 1 diabetes. There is no cure.
“When I was in the hospital I said ‘thank you God that I have diabetes because I know you have a plan for me,’” said Carson.
Now Carson and his family are faced with the daily challenges of keeping his blood sugar at regular levels. He takes a shot of insulin after each meal and also in between, up to 8 times a day. He must also prick his finger about every two hours to test his blood sugar levels which wakes him up several times each night. One could see how this could easily drain the life and happiness out of a person, but it’s had the complete opposite effect on Carson who sees his diagnosis as the opportunity of a lifetime.
About 80 people each day in the U.S. are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, and it’s estimated that more than 26-million are living with type 1, type 2 or are undiagnosed. With current health trends, the Center for Disease Control estimates July 2013 | Sandpoint Living Local 29

My name is Carson Magee and I am 9 years old. I am happy to be writing to you and glad you are reading my letter! June 30, 2010 was a day that changed my life FOREVER! After a simple blood test my pediatrician told my mom and me that I had Type 1 diabetes. I asked my mom what that was. I had NO IDEA! I knew I had been really sick, tired and thirsty lately. I soon discovered that Type 1 diabetes is a disease that attacked the beta cells in my pancreas. These beta cells produce insulin. My pancreas was delivering almost no insulin and my blood sugar was over 400! When I was in the hospital, I just thought the shots I was getting would make me all better and I would just go home. Diabetes STINKS and most days I just want to be a normal kid. I get tired of carrying juices, meters, needles and insulin around with me everywhere I go. I get tired of having to count up the carbs I eat and figuring out how much insulin I have to get. I don’t feel good when I have high blood sugar or low blood sugar and it makes me frustrated when I can’t concentrate at school. I get mad when I have to stop playing a soccer game or swimming to check my blood sugar so much. I get scared sometimes that I might lose my legs one day. I get tired of poking myself to draw blood 8-10 times a day and getting 5-7 shots a day is not fun either! I will have to do this for the REST OF MY LIFE or until there is a cure. That is why I am writing to you today! I want to see a cure for me and ALL the people who live with Type 1 diabetes everyday! This year was my third year to participate in the JDRF Walk To Cure Diabetes. Each year I unicycle the entire three miles to show that kids with T1D don’t let diabetes control them! This year I was honored to be the 2012 JDRF Inland Northwest Branch youth ambassador. To raise money for my walk, I clowned with my mom making balloon animals for businesses and festivals. I also entered the JDRF Ford race car design contest. The Chamber of Commerce in my town donated $200 when my family and friends clowned in the Fourth of July Parade. I was able to raise over $3000 for JDRF this year! As the JDRF Walk youth ambassador, I spoke to many businesses and corporate walk teams in Washington and Idaho about what Type 1 diabetes is and how they could help find a cure. I was interviewed on a local live television news show, gave interviews on local radio stations and live radio remotes, made an educational DVD about Type 1 diabetes for PEOPLE TO PEOPLE INTERNATIONAL and even made a commercial about the JDRF walk that aired over 200 times in prime time television! I have had some amazing opportunities to raise awareness about Type 1 diabetes since my diagnosis!
I have an awesome nurse at my school and I
nominated her for the Numerica School Champion Award and she WON! The local news came to my school and surprised her and me in an assembly with over 750 teachers and students! I got to tell the entire school about Type 1 diabetes that day! I also won first place in my school district’s Disability Essay Contest when I wrote about three of my Type 1 heroes in the community. I was invited to the school board meeting to tell my story! One of the coolest things I have done is enter a contest called INVENT IDAHO. My invention, The Swipe and Wipe, won Best of Show at the State Competition and I won a free patent search. One of my other prizes was a private dinner with Dr. Forrest Bird, inventor of the medical respirator, and his wife, Dr. Pam Bird. I invented a blood sugar test strip with an alcohol and dry pad attached. When the NICKELODEON TV network found out about my invention, they Sketchy Business Icons Pack 1
invited me to come to Hollywood and be a contestant on the game show “Figure It Out”. My show aired Aug 1 and put Type 1 diabetes in the national spotlight and that is what we need to help find a cure! This really opened the door for me to raise awareness about T1D with front page newspaper stories in several newspapers, radio interviews, a featured story on the local evening news, and a live showing of my NICKELODEON show for my whole town at my local library. Disney is writing a story about me and Type 1 diabetes right now that will be on www.disneyfamily.com on December 1. Lilly Pharmaceutical will also run the story in their magazines. I hope I can do a PSA on the Disney channel one day about Type 1 diabetes! Oh, and my mom volunteers for our local JDRF chapter and has just been asked to be on the JDRF Inland Northwest Board of Directors. My family and I are learning a lot about the Special Diabetes Program and I am very curious and excited about the research being done to find out why my body’s immune system is attacking and destroying insulin-producing beta cells. I am especially interested because I also have life threatening food allergies to milk, egg, and peanuts. The SDP is helping answer questions about Type 1 diabetes, but the research will also help with other autoimmune diseases like food allergies, Celiac and Crohn’s disease. The SDP also supports TrialNet. My brother is not a diabetic yet and I want him to have every chance to prevent T1D, so he won’t be so scared, like I was. TrialNet helps my T1D friend’s brothers and sisters get medicine to help stop their beta cells from dying. And, by the time I go to college, I would like to have an artificial pancreas, if there isn’t a cure by then! I know we need to have the Special Diabetes Program to help make the AP possible. I think we are so close to a cure! My family and I are doing our part for a cure, but we can’t do it alone! We need your help, Congress! Please support diabetes research issues and renew the Special Diabetes Program for me, my brother, and all my friends with T1D and other autoimmune diseases. Cover Story that 1 in 3 American adults will be living with diabetes by the year 2050. Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness, amputation, kidney and nerve damage, and also significantly increases the risk of heart attack and stroke. At 10 years old, Carson Magee wants to change all that. Carson was recently selected from a pool of 1,500 applicants to travel to Washington, D.C. and raise awareness about type 1 diabetes before congressional leaders. He will join 149 other children from across the U.S., Australia, Canada, Denmark, Israel, The Netherlands, and the U.K., at the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Children’s Congress July 8th – 10th. There he will meet with Idaho’s delegation including Congressman Raul Labrador, and Senators Mike Crapo and Jim Risch. He will also sit in on a senate hearing before a congressional committee where the kids will tell their stories of living with type 1 diabetes. Carson’s hope is that congress will continue to fund the Special Diabetes Program which accounts for a third of all federal funding on diabetes research. Researchers are currently working on an artificial pancreas which, when implanted, would greatly reduce the number of insulin shots Carson and others living with type 1 diabetes would have to take each day.

“I’m looking forward to meeting other kids like me and learning their stories too,” said Carson. Another bonus for the delegates is the chance to meet celebrities that will be in attendance including Mary Tyler Moore, Nick Jonas, Justice Sonia Sotomayor and hopefully President Obama himself. “It’s gonna be awesome,” Carson said with a smile. The bottom line with Carson is he just wants to help, anyway he can. He’s done walks, bike rides and other fundraisers. He’ll put clown make-up on and work with his mom on getting additional donations for diabetes research. He’s willing to wake up at 4:00am to appear on the local morning news show to share his story with the entire inland northwest. He’s working on an invention that makes diabetes testing equipment more efficient and is willing to travel wherever and whenever to help raise awareness.

Twin Brothers Encourage Excellence in One Another on and off the Field By Patty Hutchens

hen identical twins Tim and Todd Pays were born, their parents were determined to treat them as individuals, not as twins. “Because I had an older son, Josh, I tried not to emphasize the twin thing,” said their mom Cheryl, adding that she never dressed the boys alike unless given matching outfits. “I never referred to them as the twins, it was always 3 individual kids. I wanted them to be separate people, which they are.” While the boys do have their own distinct personalities, Cheryl and her husband Frank quickly realized Tim and Todd’s bond was like no other.

In fact, when they were babies, they had to sleep right next to each other. When they started to move around, Frank and Cheryl moved the boys to separate cribs next to each other to avoid the possibility of one rolling onto the other. But even that did not last long. “When they started standing up in their cribs, we found them one morning asleep in the same crib. So one had climbed into the other’s crib,” said Cheryl. “Frank and I couldn’t believe it. Well it happened again, and we took the cribs out and put their mattresses on the floor, and they would sleep in each others’ arms.” When they were toddlers, Frank had to take Todd to the emergency room to have stitches. At one point during their absence, Tim, at home with mom, started screaming as if in pain for no explicable reason. When Frank returned with Todd, Cheryl asked him about what time the doctor gave Todd the stitches. It turned out to be the same time that Tim was upset. They had heard that sometimes twins feel the other’s pain even when apart from one another, and Cheryl said

this was one of the only times she witnessed the phenomena. She also said the boys seem to communicate, even as infants, in a way she has not seen before. “When they were babies they used to babble to each other and act like they totally understood what the other was saying,” said Cheryl. “I guess that was part of the twin language.” That inexplicable bond between identical twins is something that even amazes Tim and Todd. “There have been so many times when we say the same thing at the same time, and the best part is seeing other people’s reactions when that happens,” said Tim. “They just sit in awe like they just saw a miracle.” “There have been so many times where Tim and I are together somewhere and not talking. In the silence out of nowhere we will ask each other the same question or bring
up a subject we didn’t know we were both thinking about,” said Todd. “I can’t count the times that we have said the same remark to somebody or something and everybody around us is speechless because it was said in unison.”
said, ‘you know, I am finally starting to figure out which one is which.’ The whole class busted up laughing and she had no idea why.”
But Todd is quick to point out that while the two share a common way of thinking, his family is all very close. “I wouldn’t say the bond between us is stronger than any other member of the family,” said Todd.
More than just brothers, the two consider one another his best friend. “An identical twin is like taking your best friend and living with them 24/7,” said Todd. “It is a great thing to have, and I’m never lonely. We are great at motivating each other and bringing out the best in each other.”
While there are many twins who would take advantage of their similarities and turn them into pranks, Tim recalls only one time where they did so in the school setting. “In criminology we switched seats. The teacher, Mrs. Crumb, was calling roll and I said here when she called Todd’s name,” explained Tim. “The funniest thing was that she even
And it seems they have done a superior job at that motivation thing. Tim and Todd graduated from Sandpoint High School in June. Both with a GPA of 4.2 and both with approximately 15 college credits already completed. “The results for the AP (advanced placement) tests aren’t in yet,” said Todd of the estimation of
credits. But the similarities don’t stop there. When asked about a possible major Todd said civil engineering or business and Tim said engineering or business. The brothers motivate one another on the football field as well. They have both signed to play football for Carroll College in Helena, MT this fall. It is something Tim had not considered until about a year ago. “I never really thought I was good enough to play college level football until Coach Puailoa started coaching again at Sandpoint,” said Tim. “It was during summer work outs going into my senior year that Coach Puailoa began talking to me about going on and playing in college. He was so enthusiastic and positive that colleges would love to have me on their team. At that point I knew that I was going to go on and play at the college level.” For Todd his decision came during his senior

year. “I didn’t want my last game of my senior year to be the last game of football I’d ever play,” said Todd.

The two have always played alongside one another. Todd at right guard and Tim at right tackle. And that won’t change at Carroll where they will continue on the offensive line. When considering what colleges they wanted to play football for, they both thought they would be more successful if they went to the same place. It was the twin factor. “We thought that we would attract more interest as a twin package than as single players,” said Todd. “Our skills aren’t the best, but we can communicate well together, and it seemed like being a twin was a bonus in the football world. Carroll looks like a great place to play football, and we both enjoy the team atmosphere.” Sandpoint High School coach Satini Puailoa made the initial contact with Carroll on behalf of Tim and Todd. They followed up and sent their highlight films to the school. They seemed really interested and sent a recruiter to Sandpoint,” said Todd. “As soon as we visited Carroll, we both knew that’s where we wanted to play. The players were nice and I liked the atmosphere of the college,” adds Tim.

After the visit, the two received scholarships and a letter of intent that they signed and sent back the following week. “I was really excited to have someone interested in me,” said Todd. The two will be roommates at Carroll and look forward to continuing to play the game they have grown to love. And it is extra special knowing they have the support of not only their best friend, but their brother both on and off the field. “I loved playing football and playing alongside Todd made it even better,” said Tim. “To have 4 more years of football makes me really happy. It’s an experience that I didn’t want to end yet”. As for Todd, he is looking forward to the challenge of growing both as an athlete and exploring his career. “The college coaches will help me get stronger so I can be a better player,” he said. “I am also looking forward to college life - being a little more independent and having a schedule that I plan out.”

Carson is 17 and will be entering his senior year at Sandpoint High School. A Sandpoint native, his determination translates to his academic achievements as well. He is enrolled in both honors and AP classes and has a GPA of 3.87. But even before his injury, it was clear that Carson was a dedicated athlete. He and Adam Finney both set the sophomore weightlifting record for squats and Carson also tied the sophomore record for the 40-yard dash. As a sophomore he earned a varsity letter for football and has been playing varsity lacrosse since his freshman year. Carson plans to attend a four year school and study business management after which he would like to attend law school. He would also like to play either lacrosse or football in college and said he likes the competition and the challenge that sports bring. “It makes me work harder for my goals,” said Carson.

D
etermination. That is one word that may best describe Carson Paull.
It was the first day of summer break last year when Carson suffered a broken leg during spring football practice. But it was not just a broken bone. He had a spiral fracture of his fibula, and he tore all the ligaments and tendons in his ankle. The prognosis? He had to forfeit his entire football season. While many teenage athletes would feel defeated and resort to giving up, Carson did just the opposite. Easily the biggest challenge he has faced thus far in sports, Carson was determined to do what he could to get better. “I had to watch on the sidelines all year while I rehabbed my leg intensely,” said Carson. “I recovered enough to play lacrosse this year where I played attack, and I am now practicing to play running back for football this fall.”
He said his most memorable moment to date was scoring his first varsity touchdown when he was a sophomore on a pass to Jackson Olin in a game against Coeur d’Alene. After finishing up football camp in June Carson has a busy summer ahead of him. He will travel to Syracuse, NY in early July where he will attend a lacrosse camp at Le Moyne College, the school which recently won the NCAA Division II Lacrosse Championships, followed by a lacrosse camp at Princeton University in New Jersey. In August Carson will go to Seattle where he has been invited for the second year in a row to attend the Elite 80 Camp. A college recruiting camp, it is by invitation only and Carson was unable to attend last year due to his injury. The success this young man has already achieved could be in large part due to the most important lesson he has learned thus far - “The best thing that you can bring with you in life is a good attitude.” Favorite Food: Sushi Favorite Teacher: “Mr. Aunan. L
ani Wahl is no stranger to competition. She will be entering her senior year at Sandpoint High School this fall and already has achieved more than most teenagers only dream of. Ranked in the 10 of women ski racers in the Pacific Northwest Ski Association, Lani has competed twice in both the Junior Olympics as well as the Western Region Championships. A soccer player since she was 5 years old, Lani is also on the Sandpoint High School track team where her athleticism and hard work was evident this spring. She was the champion in the triple jump in the Division 1 All Star Meet; champion in the triple and long jump in both districts and regionals; and competed in the Idaho State Championship in both the long jump and triple jump. “This last year I came 5 inches short of breaking the record in triple jump that was set in 2001 and plan on breaking it this next season,” said Lani. With all these achievements, it is surprising to learn that Lani said one of the biggest obstacles for her has been self-doubt. “I had a lot of issues conquering that aspect of competing in tryouts, races, games, and meets. I didn’t truly start to overcome that until this spring when I had a breakthrough season in track,” she said. “I realized that your attitude and mental state can make or break a result or an outcome, and in order to do well, confidence is the key to success.”

A member of the National Honors Society for the last two years, Lani has a GPA over 4.0 and has taken AP and honors classes since her freshman year. She would like to pursue a PhD in Archaeology/Anthropology. “From an early age I showed interest in the ancient Mesoamerican cultures especially by watching the history channel religiously and reading lots of National Geographic magazines when I was a kid.” She would also like to compete in track and skiing at the college level. Lani is grateful for the life lessons that sports has taught her over the years. “Much of my character I attribute to my career in athletics. I have learned integrity, how to be a team player, perseverance, and how to set and achieve goals for myself,” said Lani. “I would not be the same person I am today without competition in sports.” She encourages others to never sell themselves short. “If you work hard enough, success in some way, shape or form will always come out of that. Shoot for the moon, even if you miss, you will land among stars.” Favorite Food: I love Thai food. A lot. Favorite Teacher: “Mr. Aunan who retired this year has been my favorite teacher so far. He taught me to push boundaries, to always question, and to always believe I could accomplish something I thought was too far out of reach.”

SHS Performing Choir Shines at California Competition Group Thankful for the Community Support That Made it Possible By Patty Hutchens

hen the men’s and women’s performing choirs of Sandpoint High School traveled to San Diego to compete at the Heritage Festival this spring, there were mixed emotions. Some went in confidently; while others were not so sure how they would do given the schools against which they were competing. “Going into the competition, I felt we were the underdogs,” said junior Alex Stevens. “There are no enrollment divisions in the choral category so big schools compete with small schools,” explained Sandpoint High School choir director Jon Brownell who said there were a total of 8 schools in their division. “We competed against North Hollywood High School and Beverly Hills High School.” Senior Michelle Barley said she expected a high caliber of talent given the fact they were competing against schools located in an area where the entertainment industry is so prevalent.

But in the end it was the choir comprised of 14 boys and 16 girls from the small North Idaho town of Sandpoint that left with the first place honor in the category of best overall. On the road to their accomplishment, it took a dedication that went far beyond the walls of the music room. The cost of the trip totaled $35,000 and the students and Brownell sacrificed most of their weekends over a six month period to raise the necessary funds. Beginning in November and working straight through to April 18th, the students traveled to restaurants on Friday and Saturday evenings, entertaining groups of diners most of whom donated to the cause. “We owe this community and the restaurant workers a debt of gratitude,” said Brownell. “We could not have done it without them. We had to raise $35,000, and we did it because of such a supportive community.” While the men’s performing choir and the women’s performing choir typically practice

separately, they performed successfully as one at the San Diego competition. “Rehearsing both of these choirs separately helped me get more done. I was able to refine the small nuances that make a good choir into a great choir,” said Brownell. Many of the students are grateful not only for the opportunity to compete and travel to San Diego, but for the entire experience of being in the SHS choir and the relationships they have built along the way. “It was like being there (San Diego) with my second family,” said Alex Stevens. “I am close with all the girls and they are all like my sisters.” She credits Brownell with encouraging her to do her best. “He has total faith and confidence in me and pushes me to my fullest.” Senior Emily Parsons has been in performing choir for two years and said while it was a lot of work fundraising, it was all worth it. “It’s an honor to be in this class,” she said. Ryan Wolff said being involved in choir for the last six years has confirmed for him that he wants to pursue a career in producing and performing music. “I love singing,” said Ryan who in addition to choir has performed in some musicals at the school. As for Michelle Barley, she is going to pursue a degree in Fine Arts and enjoyed her time in choir at Sandpoint High School. “I really like the feeling of family we have,” said Michelle. By the end of the competition, many knew what Brownell and others here have known for a long time. “These young adults possess many great qualities,” said Brownell. “They are loyal and hard working.”

Protecting Children From the Sun It’s Not Just About Their Skin

o matter what season it is, skin isn’t the only thing that gets burned by sunlight. Eyes are just as sensitive, and children’s eyes are especially vulnerable.
“The crystalline lens in children’s and teenagers’ eyes is more transparent than in adults, which makes them more susceptible to cornea and retina damage from the sun,” says Corinne McCormack, spokesperson for The Vision Council and Fashion Director at FGX International, Inc. “Having your kids wear sunglasses while outdoors is actually as important as getting them to wear hats and sunscreen.” The Vision Council just launched a Bureau of Missing Sunglasses initiative informing adults and children that “sunglasses are absolutely critical for keeping vision safe from UV damage,” as stated in their 2012 report. So, what can you do to protect your young tike’s eyes? “If you’re concerned your little guy or gal won’t wear sunglasses, look for designs you know they love -- like bright patterns, fun shapes or sunglasses with their favorite cartoon or movie character,” adds McCormack. The following safety guidelines can also help: Seek shade for mid-day sun. UV rays are most powerful from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., so avoid being in direct sunlight without access to shade, umbrellas or protective clothing. Wear protective apparel. A wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses are musts. Look for sunglasses with the ‘MaxBlock’ sticker, which indicates 100 percent UVA and UVB lens protection. Experts at the World Health Organization say ultraviolet (UV) damage is largely preventable. Encouraging good sun-exposure habits beginning in childhood is a must.

et’s face it. Walking is a popular low-impact exercise. Now, new iPods are equipped with pedometers, half-marathons are packed with walkers and MapMyWalk.com and other apps can map and measure walking routes. But even with all of these new innovations, you’ll still want to pay attention to basics. The national recommendation for regular physical activity to stay healthy is actually rather attainable. Adults are encouraged to get at least 30 minutes of physical activity five times a week or more. This means that walking the dog, hiking, biking or walking to the metro instead of hailing a cab all count as exercise. In fact, the Library of Medicine says walking for fitness was the primary activity reported by people who met the national recommendation for healthy exercise. Research from the Duke University Medical Center confirms the amount of exercise is more important than the intensity, and walking yields significant aerobic benefits -- especially a decreased risk of cardiovascular disease. Walking for fitness can help keep joints fluid, but it also may cause some soreness or stiffness in the knees and ankles. First things first - ask the doc. Always consult with your doctor before starting any exercise routine if you have been largely sedentary or suffer from existing health conditions. Dress for the occasion. Wear comfortable clothing that’s loose fitting. If it’s cool, wear layers. Cushioned socks and shoes that fit well are also important. Educate Yourself on Just What the 5 Star Rating Means to You Medicare members have a second opportunity to join a 5-star Medicare health plan, and they can enroll in even more Kaiser Permanente 5-star plans than the previous year.
the Kaiser Permanente Medicare plans in California, Colorado, Hawaii and Oregon are the only 5-star plans in their states. In the state of Washington, Kaiser Permanente is one of only two 5-star plans.
The 5-Star Special Enrollment Period, underway through November, provides Medicare beneficiaries with the option of enrolling in a 5-star plan rather than waiting until the usual fall open enrollment. Seniors and individuals with disabilities must meet certain eligibility criteria and live where a 5-star plan is offered.
“There are many factors to consider when selecting a Medicare health plan, but this quality rating should be weighed heavily,” said Jed Weissberg, medical director, Kaiser Permanente Medicare Plans. “It’s important that seniors become familiar with the Medicare Star Quality Ratings, so they can make informed choices and select a plan that provides the best care and service.”
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services created the 5-star Special Enrollment Period to encourage enrollment in top-quality 5-star plans. CMS rates plans on a scale of one to five stars, with five being the highest for performance excellence. The ratings are based on how a plan helps members stay healthy, managing chronic conditions, member satisfaction, customer service and pharmacy benefits. Kaiser Permanente leads the nation with the most 5-star Medicare health plans for 2013. Its Medicare plans in Virginia, Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Ohio are the newest additions to the 5-star category, and the only 5-star plans in their states. In addition,

ether you are a sailor, a fisherman, or a wake boarder, Lake Pend Oreille and its waterfront amenities are a place at which you will feel right at home.

While most Americans can’t leave millions to their pets, people should plan for their pets’ long-term care. Among moves, military deployments and hospital stays, Americans might find themselves unable to care for their animal companions. But responsible pet owners can take steps to ensure that their animals receive adequate care in their absence. Here are some tips for those with pets: • Keep records. Losing an animal can be devastating, but keeping files on pets can help speed recovery. Records can also help veterinarians and new homes provide better care. • Files should include recent photographs showing the animal from each side, which can help animal shelters identify your pet. Owners should also keep their pets’ vaccinations, health certificates, rabies certificates, medical histories, breeders’ information, pedigrees and weights on record.
• Some services help track pets’ information. For example, myvaultstorage.com is an online estate-planning software program that helps users consolidate everything from marriage licenses to medical histories, contains a section for pets. Users can keep their pets’ information in an easy-to-access, safe digital form. Digital files can prove more secure than paper documents, which can be lost or destroyed by fire or water damage. • Prepare for the unexpected. Speak to at least two people who can care for your pet in an emergency. Give your emergency caretakers your pets’ feeding and care instructions; the name and number of your veterinarian and any information concerning permanent care plans for your pets. • Make formal arrangements. Work with an attorney to create a will covering your pets’ long-term care. Find someone willing to care for your animal permanently, then formalize the agreement and the amount of money that you plan to provide.

July 13 - Antique and Classic Boat Show. The Inland Empire Chapter ACBS presents this 11th Annual Antique and Classic Boat Show. At 9:30am there will be a raising of boat flags and national anthem. The boat show will be open to the general public from 10am-3pm at the Sandpoint Marina and Sand Creek Boardwalk. The show includes kid boat building booth, model boat club displays, and vendor booths. The day will continue with a parade of boats on Sand Creek at 3pm. July 13 - The Great Sandpoint Flat Water Regatta. An annual paddling event on Sand Creek, The Great Sandpoint Flat Water Regatta raises a lot of fun while raising funds for a scholarship program for local high school graduates. This fun, frolicking time for kayakers, canoers, paddle boarders and a creative class (anything that floats, pretty much) is sponsored by The Rotary Club of Sandpoint. Join in the fun between 10am-2pm! July 13 - Rock Out Cancer Concert. Join us at Beyond Hope Resort for music and fun while supporting the fight against cancer. The fun begins at 4pm and will feature nationally acclaimed musician, Mason Jennings. Tickets are $25 and there is lots of parking for boats and cars and make sure you bring your own lawn chair. Hosted by Sam Owen Fire District at the SOFD station on the corner of Hwy 200 and Peninsula Road in Hope. Enjoy a delicious breakfast from 8-11am, then climb into the fire trucks, try on equipment, and take home handouts for the children. Adults $5 and kids under 12 are $2.50. Jacey’s Race is a community event specifically to help local families with children currently being treated for cancer or other life threatening illnesses. Jacey’s Race is a timed 5K running race for persons of all ages, with prizes for the top three competitors of various age groups. There will also be a 1K walk/ fun run for children and parents that
HADEN’S HEART 5K FUN RUN The inspiration for the run begins with Haden Kistler. The 11 year old boy was diagnosed with glioblastoma brain cancer in November 2009. Haden wanted to be a heavy equipment operator, firefighter and pet cop and he had a heart for people in need. When he saw a woman on crutches struggling with Christmas packages, he insisted that he and his mom stop to help. He was fun loving, loved to joke around and had a great sense of humor. He loved his community and school and would often say, “I love it here Mom. I never want to move.” Outlasting the doctor’s prognosis on two occasions, his will and determination were felt by his community and school, who pulled together to cheer him on. Haden passed away on May 21, 2011, but brain cancer didn’t win... Haden’s spirit will forever hold the trophy! Please join us for “Haden’s Heart 5K Fun Run” in beautiful Clark Fork, Idaho! Zumba Fitness Warmup with Deanna Vick @ 6:40am. Clark Fork Fire Pancake Breakfast at 7:30am. Enjoy Clark Fork’s famous parade and 4th of July festivities starting at 9:30am. Bring the family! This year’s 30th celebration will be held at the Litehouse Beach House located at 46242 Hwy 200. Dinner will be catered by Sweet Lou’s and musical entertainment by Rhythm Machine! The CHAFE 150 is now sponsored by the Sandpoint Rotary Club, and the 2013 event benefits students of the Lake Pend Oreille School District on the autism spectrum. The CHAFE 150 has the same great route, same distances of 150 or 80 miles, same beautiful scenery and same prodigious perks. Once again, it’s a gran fondo timed event. Registration fee is now $75 instead of $120 as in past years. In exchange for the lower fee, riders must agree to raise a minimum of $50, easily raised through pledges.
