Cornerstone Physical Therapy

living

The Magic of Water By Christina Hefley, Doctor of Physical Therapy

T

here are many benefits of water for not only physical therapy, but also as part of your everyday exercise routine, no matter what your age. Below are just some of the reasons to consider aquatic exercise. Versatility: One of the most magical features of water training is its versatility and universal applicability. Water is the great equalizer; everyone – from workout rookies to professional athletes, seniors to pregnant women – can use it and enjoy its benefits. You don’t even have to be able to swim. You may not have exercised in months or even years, yet you can enter the water and begin immediately. Even if you have injuries that disable you on land, you can move easily and with assurance in the water. Weight Loss: Aquatic exercise is perhaps one of the best ways to achieve full body strength and loose weight quickly. Not only are aquatic exercise techniques easy on the body’s joints, they are also fun and relaxing. This helps to keep those seeking weight loss interested and dedicated to their exercise program. Water creates natural, gentle resistance in all planes of motion. It allows gravitational pressure on the joints to be displaced as it builds muscle tone, strength and endurance.

Your Goals Are Our Priority! Overtraining: It has been cited as the number one problem faced by fitness enthusiasts today. Overtraining symptoms can include pain, repetitive injuries, staleness of workouts, over fatigue and failure to achieve realistic fitness goals. You can do a water workout every day without worrying about straining your muscles or joints. This makes water exercise a perfect activity for those who enjoy daily exercise but have experienced overtraining injuries in the past. It also can allow for continued exercise during injury or surgical recovery.

Sandpoint’s Only Full Size Warm Water Therapy Pool

If you have given up hope of never being out of pain or getting better, come see how the magic of water can change your life!

S B O J NS TO THER’S TREASURE

ANO S JEA I E T S A MAN’S W ONE

One man’s waste is another man’s treasure. That statement is so true. What one person is done using, done enjoying, another person is thrilled to receive. It is a beautiful circle of “sharing our stuff ”. And it is a process that more and more Americans are embracing each year. This donation and resale cycle has been fueling Goodwill Industries’ social service for more than 100 years. In 2012, Goodwill Industries of the Inland Northwest received 20 million pounds of donated clothing, shoes, books, sports equipment, dishes, furniture, small appliances, artwork, televisions, computers, craft supplies, and more from individuals and businesses in central and eastern washington, and north and central Idaho. The sale of these items directly supports Goodwill’s social service programs right here in the Inland Northwest. “Edgar J. Helms, Goodwill’s founder, used to say that ‘there should be no waste in men or things,’ and that is how we conduct our service and our enterprise today at Goodwill,” says Heather Alexander, with Goodwill Industries of the Inland Northwest. “We get every bit of value we can out of the donations we are entrusted with, so that we can help men and women in our communities regain their independence through work.” Alexander recalls a thank you note Goodwill received recently from a father who had been out of work for many months due to a disability. “He was so grateful for the training and help we provided to get him back into the workforce and able to start providing for his family again,” says Alexander. Goodwill offers multiple social service programs through Workforce & Family Services and their Working Solutions Program. Most of these programs focus on helping people gain and maintain employment. Goodwill’s programs serve men and women of all ages and abilities. Some have a physical or mental challenge, others have been incarcerated, others are homeless, some have been out of

the workforce so long they feel unemployable.

Goodwill contracts with the Idaho and Washington Departments of Vocational Rehabilitation to help clients meet their employment goals. Goodwill’s Vocational Program staff work with clients in individual and group settings to offer job coaching, mock-interviews, on-the-job training, skills assessment and work readiness assessments, job search assistance, resume building, career exploration, and retention services. Goodwill operates several Working Solutions offices in North Idaho. The Working Solutions program focuses specifically on servicing families who are participating in the Temporary Assistance for Families in Idaho program. A requirement of the TAFI program is that participants are searching for work. “It is so inspiring to hear the stories of these families who finally get a job. They are so happy, so

grateful, and their selfconfidence just blooms,” says Alexander. “Clients come to us and often they just feel defeated. They feel that no one is ever going to hire them. They have just been beaten down and turned down for employment so many times. They just don’t feel able to succeed. The transformation when they are done with our programs is amazing! Their heads are held high. They are more confident. They feel like they CAN succeed.” So, remember the next time you deliver a donation to Goodwill, you are directly supporting services to men, women and children in our region. Your donation is helping them find their niche in the work world, and helping them get back on their feet and regain their self-esteem.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT

North County Electric By Patty Hutchens

F

or over 25 years Sean and Lauren Behm worked in the fast paced city of Los Angeles. Eager to lead a healthier lifestyle, the couple searched for a new place to call home. With family already living in North Idaho, they decided it would be the perfect place to relocate. “The natural beauty of the area with the abundant outdoor activities won us over,” said Lauren. They moved in 2008 and opened North County Electric in January 2009. A family run business, Lauren owns North County Electric offering a unique perspective to what is typically thought of as a male dominated field. Sean, a master certified electrician, has over 25 years of experience and is one of the few electrical contractors who is also certified as a green builder; a specialty an increasing number of clients are requiring of their contractors. In Los Angeles, Sean managed large crews on expansive commercial and industrial projects. His goal is to provide value engineering to all clients and develop leaders within North County Electric from the ground up. Lauren has over 30 years of experience in marketing and sales. Her professionalism and dedication are part of what makes North County Electric successful. She oversees employee development, human resources, social media, accounting and sales. North County Electric provides a vast array of services including electrical service, repair, new construction, remodels, generators, home automation and lighting systems. The company services residential, commercial as well as industrial clients. As a public works contractor, North County Electric performed all the work on the Second Avenue project as well as the Windbag Marina project in Sandpoint. The company works closely with North Idaho builders and general

contractors providing exceptional sub-contracting services. “We build relationships with our clients, architects and real estate professionals through credibility and honesty,” said Lauren, adding that her company also provides lighting design and is a retail lighting specialist. The couple has two children. Their daughter attends Sandpoint High School and is involved in dance in the community. Their son lives in Los Angeles where he is a high-end camera technician for the movie and television industry. Sean and Lauren enjoy skiing, boating, biking and hiking as well as music – especially the Festival at Sandpoint. They support youth athletics, sponsoring the Sandpoint Little League Pirates, and are an important participant in community building projects including Habitat for Humanity. In the four plus years since opening, North County Electric has been successful in growing their company. In addition to their loyal clientele and referrals, they attribute much of their growing success to the business mentorship and leadership of North Idaho College. “Our business coach that we meet with monthly, Mike Wells, has become a great friend and mentor to us,” said Lauren adding that she and Sean also attended the Leadership Class with Bill Jhung, the director of the Idaho Small Business Development Center. North County Electric is currently accepting all electrical bidding opportunities and looks forward to forging excellent working relationships with all their clients. Members: Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce / Women in Business, PBCA (Panhandle Building Contractors Association), IBCA (Idaho Building Contractors Association) and the NAHB (National Association of Home Builders).

SPOTLIGHT Caribou Chiropractic By Patty Hutchens Growing up in Nevada, Todd Richards travelled through North Idaho on his way to rodeo events. Struck by the beauty, he hoped it was a place he would one day call home. That finally happened when last fall he and his wife Kimberly visited Sandpoint. Two months later they had packed up their belongings, arriving in Sandpoint on New Year’s Day – a drastic change to the warm Texas climate they left behind. Dr. Richards is a chiropractor who owned his own practice for three years prior to moving here. Originally a building contractor, he chose to become a chiropractor after being on the rodeo circuit and experiencing back issues. “I would always ask my doctor what he was doing (when working on my back) and why,” said Todd. One of Todd’s priorities is to educate his patients about their bodies. He describes his adjustments as gentle and is empathetic with all of his patients. “I have had many patients who have thanked me for taking the time to listen to them,” said Todd. A unique quality of Dr. Richards is his desire to not just treat his patients’ pain, but to also work closely with doctors and other health care professionals to develop a treatment plan that will maximize the patient’s success. Whether one is a medical doctor, chiropractor, physical therapist, or massage therapist, all have something to bring to the table and by working together they can help the patient heal said Dr. Richards.

Kimberly Richards, CMT & Dr. Todd Richards Call to Make an Appointment:

Caribou Chiropractic also offers massage therapy. When they left Texas, Kimberly left her position as a bank auditor to join her husband in his office. After completing her schooling and receiving her license and certification May 1st, Kimberly will offer everything from full body massage, including sport and deep tissue massage, to a brief clinical massage. Clinical massage focuses on certain areas loosening the muscles where patients experience pain or tension, making it is easier for Dr. Richards to do the manipulation.

Caribou Chiropractic does not bill insurance but does accept Care Credit and will assist patients with completing the forms to file a claim with their insurance company. “By not billing insurance it makes it more affordable for our patients,” said Kimberly.

The couple has settled in and is experiencing the friendliness of the Sandpoint community as well as the beauty. They love the change of seasons and clean air and said people who speak of southern hospitality obviously have not been to Sandpoint. “People are much friendlier here,” said Todd. As members of the Chamber of Commerce, Kimberly is also a member of Women in Business. As for the recreational opportunities, Todd said he could not be happier to have a place to enjoy hunting and fishing and all that the great outdoors has to offer. “It’s paradise here,” he said.

he “fiscal cliff ” was averted, but what does this mean to homeowners? The answer: a lot. The bill, signed into effect on Jan. 2, restricts tax rates from increasing and, among other things, reinstates and extends tax credits for qualifying energy-efficient home upgrades between Jan. 1, 2012 through Dec. 31, 2013. Homeowners can earn up to $500 in tax credits with the purchase and installation of qualifying products. “Now is an ideal time to check off some of those home improvement ‘to do’ items,” said Trey Hoffman, global product manager at Rinnai, a manufacturer of tankless water heaters. “In addition to the tax break, homeowners reap the benefits of these energy-efficient upgrades for years, as these products can help reduce monthly utility bills.” What qualifies as an energy-efficient upgrade? All products must meet certain efficiency criteria to qualify. A licensed contractor, builder or remodeler can help homeowners select eligible products, such as: • Insulation materials, which help keep a house warm in the winter and cool in the summer, qualify if they meet 2009 International Energy Conservation Code requirements. The credit value is 10 percent of the cost of the insulation material. • Exterior windows and skylights,

18   Sandpoint Living Local | www.livinglocalmagazine.com

if Energy Star-rated, can reduce homeowner energy bills 7 to 15 percent. A 10 percent credit can be earned when homeowners select Energy Starqualified windows. • A Tankless Water Heater can save homeowners up to 40 percent on their monthly energy bills. Qualifying tankless water heaters, such as those manufactured by Rinnai, have an Energy Factor (EF) of at least .82. A $300 credit is available to homeowners opting for a more efficient way to heat water. “Homeowners don’t always have to sacrifice luxury, aesthetics and comfort when upgrading to energy-efficient products. This is especially the case with tankless water heaters,” added Hoffman. “Tankless technology affords homeowners the ability to enjoy endless hot water, while saving energy. The product’s long lifespan – nearly two decades – gives homeowners peace of mind knowing they have selected an energyefficient product that will pay them back month after month for years to come.” What documentation is needed to earn the tax credit? Homeowners need to file IRS Form 5695 with their taxes. They also need to keep receipts proving when the equipment was purchased and a copy of the manufacturer’s certification. Tax advisors can provide additional guidance.

W

hile home prices are still considerably lower than at their peak in 2007, most experts agree that the housing market has already bottomed out, and if you have considered buying a home, now is the time. According to real estate website Zillow, 30-year fixed interest rates are hovering around the 3.35% mark and home values are on the rise. “The main reason interest rates remain so low is the Fed wanting to keep the economy stimulated, and the main way to do that is give people incentives to buy,” said Mortgage Broker Robyn Garlich-Baird of Sierra Pacific Mortgage Company in Spokane. GarlichBaird says her workload has nearly doubled this year as people take advantage of the stellar rates for purchase or refinance. Paula Kamp, owner of Remax representing the greater North Idaho region from St. Maries to Canada and Post Falls to Silver Mt/ Kellogg agrees. “There is no better retirement program than a 3.25% interest rate for the next 30 years. When else in history have you been able to secure a home mortgage at this rate?” said Kamp. Kamp believes the local market has bottomed out but also cautions people about jumping at the first home that peaks their interest. “Be sure to take time to find the right location. With so many properties available and more to come on the market you should take time to research and visit all the areas that appeal to you,” said Kamp.

If you don’t have a real estate agent lined up, you can begin your search on one of the numerous listing websites available. Trulia. com and Zillow.com offer a quick glance at properties, and Realtor.com is also a good resource that includes more detailed information, accurate listing prices, and local agents. All sites allow you to narrow your search by price, square footage, location, beds/baths, school district and other important factors. Remember, once you’ve found the right realtor, they can show you any property you are interested in, even if it’s with a different company. Even if you don’t plan on buying tomorrow, Mortgage Broker Garlich-Baird highly recommends getting pre-approved for a loan. “A lot of people find that dream home, and by the time they go to get approved someone else has already come in with an offer,” said Garlich-Baird. When seeking pre-approval, have your finances in line including pay stubs, W2s, tax returns, and bank statements. Your credit score is also very important in securing the best rates. Know your score before you begin and be sure to avoid late payments or opening large lines of credit right before or during your approval process. During this process you will get an idea of your monthly payment, how much money you will need to put down as well as other upfront costs. This will help narrow your search to a certain price range, and show you how much you’ll need to save before closing.

Huckberry Picken A Children’s Book about One of North Idaho’s Favorite Summer Activities Article by Patty Hutchens When Alice’s younger brother David is finally old enough to join his older sister in her adventure, it is a special day. The two have a day of exploring, returning with not only a bucket of huckleberries, but also the purple teeth that cannot disguise the day’s events.

H

uckleberries. For those who do not live in North Idaho, it is typically an unfamiliar fruit. But walk into many stores in this area and one is drawn to the huckleberry taffy, huckleberry chocolate, huckleberry pancake mix and a whole variety of huckleberry delights. But for Daniel Cape, huckleberries have proven to be much more than a fruit. Huckleberries are the inspiration behind his latest book, a children’s book titled Huckleberry Picken. Originally from North Carolina, Daniel is a caricature artist who has worked at Universal Studios in California as well as the Stratosphere Hotel in Las Vegas. He had heard a great deal about North Idaho from a friend who shared with him stories about the locals and her adventures of growing up in North Idaho. After moving here last September, Daniel traveled up to Schweitzer Mountain to hike and explore his new home. He came across huckleberries and began picking them, soon learning of the popularity of the fruit. “I had heard of Huckleberry Finn but that was about all,” said Daniel, of the state fruit of Idaho. He had already written one book, Corn on the Cob, which contains cartoons about his deployment in Iraq with some adult humor, and was contemplating another when his adventure of huckleberry picking gave him the creative ideas he had been waiting for. The book, which incorporates people Daniel has met since moving to the area, is about a young girl named Alice Picken. She loves to go huckleberry picking which ultimately earned her the nick name Huckleberry, fitting nicely with her last name Picken.

At the end of the book, Cape includes a recipe for huckleberry muffins so that the young readers can experience their own huckleberry adventure.

relax with friends. settle in by the fire. enjoy a menu of fine wines, light fare and hearty favorites.

Cape’s caricatures are an instrumental part of what brings the book to life. Inspired by the beautiful outdoors of North Idaho as well as the eclectic nature of the people who call this place home, Cape’s book not only is a joy for kids to read, but also the recipe gives both kids and parents an opportunity to be creative in the kitchen.

Daniel works at Echo Springs in Bonners Ferry, which is a transition living facility for young adults who are having trouble in college, or struggling with general life skills. When not working, he enjoys drawing caricatures at parties and events, with some of his work recently being displayed by Pend Oreille Arts Council. He enjoys participating in festivals all over the region, from Spokane to Libby, MT and said he looks forward to his first summer in Sandpoint and all it has to offer. Huckleberry Picken is available at Vanderford’s in downtown Sandpoint as well as other stores throughout the area. For more information on where you can find Daniel Cape’s book, go to www.sillyface.vpweb.com where you can also view samples of his drawings.

Memorial Day Article by Patty Hutchens

M

emorial Day. For some it brings to mind the official start to summer. Family and friends gather for picnics, while many take the opportunity to travel during the long weekend. But as everyone knows, Memorial Day means much more. It is a chance to honor those who have sacrificed and defended our country’s freedom. First proclaimed in May 1868 by General John Logan, the national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, Memorial Day has been a long standing tradition in this country. But it was not always celebrated by all states. The first Memorial Day in 1868 was celebrated by placing flowers at Arlington National Cemetery on the graves of both the Union and Confederate soldiers. It was a special day to honor those who fought in the Civil War. Five years later New York became the first state to recognize the day. Over the next 17 years several other states followed; but it was only the northern states. The South refused and instead chose to honor their fallen soldiers on separate days. Following World War I, Memorial Day was declared a day to honor not just those who died in the Civil War but also those who fought in any war. It was then the southern states joined their neighbors to the north and recognized Memorial Day. The day had always been observed on May 30th until 1971 when Congress passed the National Holiday Act making it a three day weekend. While many believe the traditional observance of Memorial Day has diminished over time, there are many places where it is still a very solemn occasion. For instance, over the last fifty years on the Thursday prior to Memorial Day, 1200 soldiers place American flags at each of the approximately 260,000 graves at Arlington National Cemetery. The soldiers then stand

guard at the cemetery over the course of the weekend to ensure that all flags remain. And it is not just limited to Arlington, there are places all around the country where Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts place flags on graves of fallen soldiers. And for those who have lost hope that Memorial Day is a forgotten tradition, take comfort in the fact that in December 2000 Congress established the National Moment of Remembrance which asks that each American, A symbol of Memorial Day which has wherever they are at 3 pm, lasted throughout the years is the red to pause for a moment of poppies that many purchase in honor of unity to honor those who those fallen soldiers. The tradition began have given their lives in the early 1920s and stemmed from a in service to the United poem which reads: States. It is a practice observed by many We cherish too, the Poppy red, organizations across the That grows on fields where valor led, country including Major It seems to signal to the skies, League Baseball which That blood of heroes never dies. will halt all its games for a moment of silence; and if you listen closely you may be able to hear one of the many trains across the country that blast their whistles in unison.

Almost 100 years later, the Veterans of Foreign Wars can still be found selling artificial red poppies on or near Memorial Day.

So this year whether you are gathering for your family barbeque, traveling home from a long weekend or just enjoying some down time, take a moment to remember those for whom we can thank for giving the ultimate sacrifice. And do not forget if you see a veteran or a service man or woman, a simple “thank you” can mean a lot. May 2013 | Sandpoint Living Local   29

My Brother Slept Through the Marathon

Former Sandpoint Resident’s Close Call at the Boston Marathon Article by Jennifer Prandato

M

y younger brother Jonny is notoriously late for everything because he sleeps more than anyone I know. When we were younger, he actually used to fall asleep in the shower before school, causing our entire family to be late for the day’s activities. Monday was no exception.

that it was impossible for me to be there or to get a hold of my family because there wasn’t cellphone reception made me feel so helpless and alone.

always necessarily be safe. In the wake of the tragedy, all I can do is constantly tell my family I love them and always be thankful that my brother slept through his alarm.

He and his girlfriend planned on spending the entire day at the finish line of the Boston Marathon, cheering on people who had completed the prestigious race and taking photos of the event. They were late because Jonny slept through his alarm. When the bombs went off, Jonny and his girlfriend were on the subway, almost to the finish line. They were evacuated and forced to run back to their dorm, along with the streaming crowds of terrified spectators. It was the first time I’ve ever been incredibly happy my brother has the sleeping habits of a hibernating bear. Despite being in constant contact with my brother all day and I knew he was safe, I couldn’t stop shaking. My two younger brothers are my best friends and I couldn’t imagine losing either one of them. Along with Jonny, I have another younger brother, Dana, and even though they are both more than 6 feet tall and I am 5-foot-2, they will always be my baby brothers. Shortly after finding out my brother was safe, I was overcome by huge, grieving sobs. I couldn’t stop crying. The pain I was feeling wasn’t just for my brother — who I’m sure was terrified beyond belief — but for the community of Boston, for the people who call Boston home. And, that’s because Boston is my home. I haven’t spent a lot of time there because I’m always here at school, but it’s where I belong because it’s where my family lives. Monday was an awful day for me because it is so frightening to see the places that my family and I frequently visit to be torn apart by destruction and chaos. Knowing

Long time North Idaho residents, Dana, Jonny, and Jennifer Prandato.

Watching footage of the bombings made me feel both numb and terrified at the same time. It was different than other tragedies I’ve seen on television because I knew those places. I had experiences there. Those places were my home, the places where I was supposed to feel safe. The bombings took place down the street from the restaurant my brothers and I always go to, where we split pizzas and coffee and tell stories from our childhood. They happened right next to the record store that the three of us searched all over Boston for, ecstatic when we finally found it, and on New Years Eve, Jonny and I walked right past the site of the bombings, tipsy of cheap wine and smoking celebratory cigars, laughing because we were alive. These are some of my favorite memories. But, in the span of a second, Bolyston Street was transformed into a place that will be remembered by fear instead of happiness and accomplishment. Boston will always be my home, but Monday’s events have taught me that I won’t

Create Patriotic Moments With Your Children

Five Ways to Get the Kids Involved in Your Memorial Day Celebration Article by Patty Hutchens

W

hile children may have difficulty understanding the traditions and meaning of Memorial Day, there are many ways to teach them about patriotism and honoring our military.

For many we have had parents or grandparents who fought in World War II, the Korean War or the Vietnam War, but young children in today’s society have not had the exposure that previous generations have. Help them learn more about honoring those who have served in the United States Armed Forces by taking part in some of these simple, yet meaningful, activities. Fly an American flag. If you do not own a flag, it is a great opportunity to help young kids make their own. All you need is construction paper, glue and a straw and they can fly their own flag. For older children, it is a great opportunity to teach them how to fly and fold a flag. To learn more visit www.usflag.org/foldflag.html. Teach children about flying the flag at half-mast when the country is in mourning.

Stop by and shop our spring and summer merchandise! Prana, Dankso, Tommy Bahama, Toms, Patagonia, Birkenstock, and so much more!

Visit a cemetery. Many cemeteries hold special Memorial Day services. This will give children an opportunity to honor those who have served and witness others honoring those who have died protecting our country. You may even want to bring flowers to have a child place on a grave of someone who has served in the United States military. Honor a current soldier. Put together a care package for a current soldier. Explain to your children that there are men and women far away helping to protect our country every day. Have your child write a note of appreciation and tuck it into a care package. Visit anysoldier.com to learn more how to connect with soldiers in all branches of our military. Teach patriotism through music. If your child is interested in music, teach them some patriotic songs. It will integrate their love of music with patriotism. Bring your patriotism into the kitchen. If your child enjoys creating things in the kitchen, help them make an American themed dessert. Perhaps decorate a cake like a flag or make a red, white and blue Jell-O dessert. If you know a veteran, extend to them an invitation to share in your child’s creation. It is a fun way for children to show their appreciation and will make a veteran feel honored too.

Batter Up! It Just became a Lot Easier for Sandpoint Youth Baseball Article by Patty Hutchens | Photo of Jackson Russo & Zach Farrell by Jason Duchow Photography

ports have always been an integral part of Jim Bell’s life. The Sandpoint resident has been a long time coach of both football and baseball, and over the last 25 years he has been at the helm leading teams at all levels from youth to college athletes. It is his passion. As a coach and a father of two athletic sons, Bell can attest to the significant difference having adequate equipment and facilities can make. But it does not just help a team to succeed; he believes it can also help the overall community enthusiasm for the sport.

“It is very clear to me what a benefit it is to have good facilities for these programs,” said Bell who moved to the area just over three years ago. His sons have participated in Sandpoint athletics and they quickly discovered, as anyone who has been involved in spring sports in North Idaho knows, it is always a challenge to properly train due to the weather. Recognizing the challenge it presented, Bell and his family took it upon themselves to do what they could to give the kids in this community a chance to be able to get in the maximum number of outdoor baseball practices prior to the start of the season. “The weather is such a deterrent for the baseball program to be successful,” said Bell who points out that he also believes this has been a contributing factor to the decline in interest in youth baseball over the last several years. In fact, last year Bell said was the first time in a number of years that Sandpoint was unable to field an American Legion team. It was a huge disappointment for many. What would it take to make a difference? One thought that came to mind was to provide batting cages and turf for the cages, offering players an opportunity to practice without the mud that

spring in North Idaho brings. Bell did his research and consulted with many including officials with the City of Sandpoint. The City agreed to prepare the surface; Bell had renderings made of the batting cages and this spring Bell and his family were able to present their gift to the baseball enthusiasts of Sandpoint. “My whole family participated,” said Bell who adds that they feel very fortunate to be able to help and it was exciting for him and his family to work together to do what they could to help improve the facilities. They all agreed it would go a long way towards helping the players when competing against teams that are able to train outdoors long before the start of the season. But Bell’s vision does not end here. He would like to see fundraising take place and businesses and organizations come together so that one day the entire playing surface can be replaced with an all-weather surface, not

While the cost upfront may be great, Bell points out that by doing so it would ultimately save money on the cost of field maintenance and would benefit many programs, not just sports, and specifically the Festival at Sandpoint. There would be an increase in opportunities to host tournaments, additional concerts and other attractions, thereby providing an entire boost to the local economy. “We have one of the most amazing settings,” said Bell of the Memorial Field venue. “We could draw people from all over, and it would be a huge win for our community’s businesses, restaurants and hotels.” Parents and coaches alike are pleased to have the cages and know it will help the kids with

training. With multiple players allowing to practice at once, it is a more efficient use of practice time. Hans Feyen coached in the Babe Ruth league for years and has had three sons in the Sandpoint little league and high school programs. He said the addition of the cages and turf is a generous gift that will make baseball practice not only more efficient, but safer as well. “It used to be full of mud and water. Now we have better drainage and the turf will help prevent injuries such as twisted ankles which are more likely to occur in the mud and water,” said Feyen. He said it will also allow coaches to be more versatile in practice, allowing batting and pitching to occur at the same time. “Jim (Bell) once told me that they always like

to leave a place better than what they found it,” said Feyen, grateful for the generosity the Bell family has shown to the community. The players too have enjoyed the opportunity to begin outdoor practice a lot sooner than in the past. Sophomore Jackson Russo is on the varsity team and said having the cages and turf has made a big difference. “We can do twice as much at practice than we could ever do in the mezzanine (at the high school gym),” said Jackson. Jackson explains that the teams are not allowed to practice on the fields when they are muddy. “So having these cages allows us to be outside a lot more than in the past,” he said. “It’s great because we can take more cuts and more reps.” A sophomore, Jackson has played baseball most of his life and loves the sport. Practicing on the turf and having use of the batting cages goes a long way to improve team unity, an aspect of baseball Jackson enjoys. “I like

During his tenure at Sandpoint High School, Alex has lettered in football, track, cross country and tennis. He also played baseball his sophomore year and basketball his freshman year. Alex said that one of his biggest challenges in sports came when as a junior he decided to go out for the football team. “I was less experienced than my teammates, but I worked hard and was able to earn my place on the team,” he said. All of that hard work paid off. During the first varsity football game last fall, Alex made two interceptions and a touchdown. Although the Bulldogs lost, it was a confidence builder for Alex. “I learned that my goals could be reached and that the team would continue to improve.” He went on to receive the Defensive MVP award for the 2012 football season and also received the football IEL 2012 Newcomer Award. “Playing under the lights of Memorial Field with the crowd going crazy is such a unique experience,” said Alex who counts that as his

Support the Bulldog Nation Raffle Your Chance to Win a 1986 Restored Corvette Articles by Steve Russo

L

ast year the Bulldog Nation raised over $50,000.00, money that went directly to help fund youth and high school football in this community. It was a massive undertaking, and many local businesses and community members stepped up to make this happen. Local football players, from the senior class down to those in the junior tackle program, pounded the pavement going door to door last spring collectively selling over 10,000 raffle tickets for $5 each. The grand prize was a vintage Ford Mustang.

***Photo is similar, but is not the actual car***

The proceeds of the raffle were used to purchase new equipment and helped to send over 150 players to football camp last spring. The existing equipment was out of date and in dire need of updating. In addition to updating the existing equipment, additional equipment needed to be purchased since the number of youth enrolled in the football program has nearly doubled since Coach Satini Puailoa took over the program. “We can’t run these programs without support from the local community. Dollar by dollar, it’s about the need to get on the field,” said Puailoa, appreciative of all the people and businesses that purchased tickets. “To have people step up like that is huge for the kids. They’re supporting football in this town from the 3rd grade to 12th graders.” This year the Bulldog Nation will be back at it, the grand prize is a restored 1986 Corvette with a Doug Nash 4+3 transmission, 350 engine, angled head plugs, a new clutch and chrome plated aluminum corvette wheels. As the football program continues to grow in Sandpoint, it’s imperative to continue to raise funds that will allow the growth to take place. Once again the Bulldog Nation thanks you for your support! ***Photo is similar, but is not the actual car***

here are good reasons why the Lake Pend Oreille School District has enjoyed the support from the community as recently witnessed by the passage of the supplemental levy. In addition to the outstanding academic achievement performance that is rightfully expected, a well performing school district is an asset to the community. When a business or employee is considering moving to a new area, the first thing on their list of considerations is the schools. A high performing school district will help attract and retain businesses and employees.

of 2015 through the “Smarter Balanced Assessment”. This assessment is far different than the “Idaho Standards Achievement Test” that our students currently take each spring. The Idaho Standards Achievement Test is 100 percent multiple choice, while the new assessment will consist of performance tasks and constructed response. This new emphasis will change the way we do business in our classrooms. Students will be expected to become adept at much more complex tasks than are required on the current state assessment. We are excited about this change and our educators are up for the challenge.

LPOSD has had a steady 6+ years of increased ISAT scores; Sandpoint High School has the highest SAT scores in the state in math & reading; for the past five years, Clark Fork High School has been recognized by US News & World Report as one of America’s Best High Schools; Sandpoint Middle School is ranked 6th academically out of 101 middle schools in the state; Southside School was recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School in 2011. Out of 38,000 schools in the U.S., only 320 were given this award.

It has been my honor to serve on the Board of Trustees for the last 7 years, this past year as Board Chair. We have come a long way in improving the district and are now a well respected district in the State of Idaho. I look forward to serving another term so I can continue the good work that we have accomplished.

As good stewards of the public trust, we are charged with producing excellence at the best price possible. This is a job that we take very seriously. When compared to all voter approved levies, we come in 53% below the state average. We deliver value to the tax payer. This is no small feat given the geographical challenges of our district. Some districts are compact and very efficient to run. Ours is spread out and around the county; and despite those challenges we come in well below the state average. As we look to the future, we are transitioning to the Common Core State Standards. In June 2009, Idaho joined 47 other states in committing to develop a common core of state standards for proficiency in Englishlanguage arts and mathematics for grades K-12. The emphasis is on learning critical thinking skills. Our staff is busy learning about the standards and ways to best help our students meet and exceed these new rigorous standards in the classroom. Students will be tested on the Common Core State Standards beginning in the spring

HEALTHYLIVING

Keep your family on track and incorporate a few simple rules for healthy living into your busy lives.

5 Healthy Habits for Busy Families Don’t Sacrifice Health Due to Lack of Time

F

or many families, school means routines and maintaining busy schedules that keep the entire family on the go -- especially those families who are juggling school as well as extracurricular activities and sports. That is why it is particularly important to take the right steps, beginning with a few healthy habits that will carry them through not only the school year, but for a lifetime. It’s easy to get started. For children to adopt healthy routines, many experts agree that the whole family needs to be involved. Brandi Chastain, Olympic and world soccer

champion, mom and mentor says, “To keep my family on track, I like to incorporate a few simple rules for healthy living into our busy lives,” she adds. 1. Hydrate to perform great. Kids should drink water before, during and after exercise. While exercise generates heat and increases the body’s core temperature, water works to bring body temperature back to the normal 98.6 F. Let your child pick out a colorful water bottle to make drinking water fun. 2. Always make time for healthy meals. The USDA says that half our plates should be filled

with colorful fruits and veggies, but when your children are constantly running from school to practice and back, it can be tough to get them to eat that perfect meal. Add Libby’s Single Fruit Cups, which contain one complete serving of fruit, to your children’s bags for an easy and nutritious snack. 3. Sleep is important. Children should receive an average of eight to nine hours of sleep each night. Without enough sleep, children will not perform to their full potential during school, practice or games. T

he war for healthy school lunches wages on, but parents serious about childhood nutrition have options.

“With childhood obesity on the rise and kids eating worse today than they did 20 years ago, it is so important for parents to take their children’s diets seriously,” says Elizabeth Somer, registered dietitian, nutritionist and author of “Eat Your Way to Happiness.” But, as many busy moms and dads know firsthand, it’s not easy to pack a quality lunch at 6 a.m., especially if your child is likely to opt for a slice of cafeteria pizza regardless. Don’t worry - the war is not lost. It’s entirely possible to get children to eat nutritious lunches, especially if you know your way around fruits and veggies. According to Somer, watermelon should be a kitchen staple.

song while they fall asleep. 4. Turn exercise into a family affair. When exercising is a solo act, it can sometimes feel like a chore. Bring the whole family onboard and make exercising fun while also getting family time. Join your kids in a game of soccer, Double Dutch or kickball. 5. Lead by example. When you set a good example, your kids are more likely to follow. Although it’s easy to stop at the drive-thru on the way home from practice, make an effort to eat well and live a healthy lifestyle. Become a role model by exercising regularly and eating healthy foods. It’s easier when you make it a team effort. To learn more about healthy eating habits, and for easy weeknight recipes, visit www.getbacktothetable.com.

“Watermelon contains lycopene. Lycopene is an antioxidant, and it is the pigment that gives watermelon its red color,” says Somer. “Watermelon is free of cholesterol, fat and sodium. You can’t get much better than that.” The juicy fruit, often dubbed a multi-vitamin unto itself, has vitamins A, B6 (6 percent), C, potassium (8 percent) and fiber (4 percent). It is also great for staying hydrated, a way for picky kids to eat their water. Not to mention, watermelon is lip-smacking, finger-licking delicious. For all of you about to harp on how much natural sugar watermelon has, wait just a second. Somer says this is largely a myth, and that although watermelon may have a high glycemic index score, it has very few calories. “Watermelon just fills you up without filling you out,” Somer says. “The nice thing about watermelon is that it is chin-dribbling juicy and so versatile. You can eat it straight from the melon, blend it into a beverage, make popsicles out of it, make sweet salsas, grill it, or put it in sandwiches.” Watermelon is often mistaken for a summer treat, but it’s available all year round. It is also surprisingly portable once chopped up and put in baggies or Tupperware.

Nearly 63 percent of women older than age 35 experience age or sun spots, discolorations and uneven skin tone. The dark side? The problem reflects your apparent age. “Getting a clear, even skin tone without discoloration is just as important as wrinkle-fighting to achieving a rejuvenated, youthful appearance,” says Dr. Ellen Marmur, prominent New York City dermatologist and author of Simple Skin Beauty. “To some patients, it’s even more important.” Dermatologists like Marmur call it hyperpigmentation, but its various types are commonly known as age spots, sun spots, liver spots, freckles and melasma, brown patches of skin triggered by a hormone imbalance. “Often, the first thing people notice as they get older is their loss of ability to see distance,” notes Terry McGowan, director of engineering & technology for ALA . “That happens around age 45 and is called presbyopia. By 60, most people have a ‘fixed focus’ optical system and need glasses. After age 60, eye and visual system changes accelerate, so that less light reaches the eye,” said McGowan. “Therefore, people need more light to see details as they age.” Paul Eusterbrock, who heads a company which develops products to help aging eyes agrees with McGowan. “The main issue is the quality of light,” he says. “Research shows that a 60-year-old needs twice as much light as a 30-year-old. Most of the commonly found lighting guidelines are written with the 30-year-old user in mind,” Eusterbrock explains. Is there a magic light bulb that will work for everyone? McGowan and Eusterbrock say no. “This may sound strange, but the perfect bulb is whichever one the user finds works best for them,” McGowan says. “Individual vision varies so much -- especially as people age -- that it’s difficult to develop lighting recipes that are one-size-fits-all,” he says.

Mention this ad and receive a bottle of GNP Vitamin D1000 FREE*

Whether you are old or young, the basic rules of good lighting apply. You should have sufficient illumination with little or no glare, and use diffused lighting to minimize shadows. If energy savings is a concern, McGowan recommends selecting compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) and LED bulbs with warm tones (look for 2700-3000K on the box) and a high color-rendering index of 90 or more.

T

hough cataracts are the leading cause of vision loss worldwide, myths persist about their cause and treatment. Cataracts affect nearly 22 million Americans age 40 and older. By age 80, more than half of all Americans will have cataracts, according to the National Eye Institute. “Cataracts are not preventable, but they are treatable,” said Richard P. Mills, MD, “and the best way to ensure vision stays healthy for a lifetime is to schedule a visit with an ophthalmologist. More than 90 percent of the people who have cataract surgery regain useful vision.” As the eye’s lens, located behind the pupil, grows older, its cells die and accumulate. The result is blurred vision and “fuzzy” images. Eye injuries, certain medications and diseases such as diabetes are also known to cause cataracts. In the early stages, stronger lighting and eyeglasses may lessen vision problems caused by cataracts. But at a certain point, cataract surgery -- the most frequently performed operation in the country -- may be necessary. There are four common cataract myths to dispel:

* MYTH 1: Eye drops can prevent or dissolve cataracts. o FACT: The Food and Drug Administration has not approved any drops that cure or delay cataracts. Since cataracts are not a substance, there is nothing for the drops to dissolve. * MYTH 2: Close-up tasks like reading or sewing make cataracts worse. o FACT: Cataracts are not caused by how people use their eyes. However, cataracts likely become more noticeable during close work. One sign of a cataract is the need for more light to do the same activities.

* MYTH 3: Cataracts are reversible. o FACT: The lens naturally clouds as it ages; this process is unavoidable and irreversible. But its progress can be slowed by quitting smoking, eating a balanced diet and wearing sunglasses. If you are age 65 and older and you think you have cataracts, you may qualify for a free eye exam. The eye exams are provided by a program called EyeCare America, an organization that works with nearly 7,000 volunteer ophthalmologists across the U.S. and Puerto Rico. Get Out of Town

Weekend Getaway Portland, Oregon Article by Colin Anderson

I

f you have a couple of extra vacation days, you should consider using them for a long weekend and travel to the Rose City. It might be just the break you need. Portland, Oregon is home to nearly 600,000 people, but it feels surprisingly smaller and slower than neighboring Seattle and other cities of its size. It is an active community of mostly easy going people where the line to get into a casual Sunday brunch is often twice the wait as a nice sit down dinner. The approximately 7 hour drive is easy as you take Highway 395 south to the Tri-Cities of Washington then cross the border into Oregon, following Interstate 84 along the Columbia river all the way. There are a few small towns and several massive dams to explore, but not much else until you reach The Dalles or Hood River. Both have plenty of places to eat, shop, and gas up before the last stretch of your journey. If it is your first trip to Oregon, you will soon find out that you are not allowed to pump your own gas. An attendant will do it for you, and there is no need to tip them, unless you’re feeling generous! Whether on your way in or out of town, make sure to stop a few moments to take in Multnomah Falls. The giant waterfall is just thirty minutes from downtown and easily seen from the highway, but it’s an incredible sight to see up close. The falls total six-hundred and twenty feet and you can hike a short trail to get an up close look. It’s is truly an impressive sight and a fun way to start your trip. If the skies are clear when you arrive in Portland, take a look all around and you should be able to see Mount Tabor, Mount St. Helens, and Mount Hood. You’ll also notice that the scenery is incredibly green.

50   Sandpoint Living Local | www.livinglocalmagazine.com

Portland is one of the rainiest big cities in the U.S., but all the showers help create an amazing landscape. Luckily the summer months are quite dry, averaging less than five inches of rain between May and August. Long known as the Rose City, there are plenty of botanical gardens to explore including the famous International Rose Test Garden. The Willamette River runs directly through town splitting downtown from the convention center, mall, and Rose Quarter. Along the river lies Governor Tom McCall Waterfront Park, a several mile stretch where people run, bike, sun, throw a Frisbee and otherwise relax. There is a floating maritime museum and also a ferry that arranges cruises up and down the river. One of the most fun Portland experiences is meandering through the Saturday market, which is now held on Sundays as well. The market is steps off the Waterfront Park and has everything you would expect and plenty you might not. You could stumble across a group of pirates singing sea shanties for change, right across from a stage show featuring jazz musicians. There are vendors selling handmade jewelry, clothing, art, spices and seasonings, and plenty of other trinkets. One stop you should definitely check out is the Spoonman who creates incredible pieces of art with old utensils.

The market is kid and dog friendly and you might find the two playing together in nearby fountains on a hot summer day. Getting around town is easy with plenty of affordable public transportation options. The MAX light rail system connects downtown with the outlying suburbs, and the Portland Streetcar makes it easy to get to different shopping destinations downtown. There is also an extensive and safe bus system. Best of all are your own two legs. Downtown Portland is easy to navigate and isn’t more than a few square miles. Locals will always help point you in the right direction if you’re feeling lost.

May 16th - 19th www.lostinthe50s.org

Another incredibly unique site in Portland is the seemingly endless line of food carts spread all over town. At last count there were at least 600 street vendors cooking up any food you can imagine. Whatever you’re craving you’ll find it along with foods you’ve likely never tried. Best of all most meals are under ten dollars! These carts are regulated by the city so sanitation is typically not a concern and the food is safe to eat. You could spend your entire weekend just eating from food carts and never come close to having the same thing twice. For beer and sports fans, Portland has plenty of both. There are more breweries here (60+) than any other metropolitan area in the WORLD. There are tasting festivals seemingly every weekend and local pubs carry a wide range of local flavors. For the sports fan, a live soccer game shouldn’t be missed. The atmosphere at a Portland Timbers game is right on par with matches in Europe, and you’ll soon be cheering right along. You can also check out NBA action with the Portland Trailblazers, or watch the Portland Winterhawks battle it out on the ice.

You could spend weeks here and barely touch what the city has to offer. There are countless parks, trails, bike paths, shops, dining, and adventures to pursue. Before visiting, check with the Chamber of Commerce as there are festivals and celebrations just about every summer weekend. It’s pretty incredible to have such a diverse city just seven hours from our front door. Fun Facts About Dogs

Have A Heart Prevent Heartworm

Y

our pet offers unconditional love, so shouldn’t you do your best to take care of his or her heart?

Cats and dogs can become infected with heartworm from mosquito bites. All cats and dogs are susceptible to heartworm, no matter their age or state of health. It is important to protect your pet regardless of where you live as heartworm disease has been found in every state. When an infected mosquito bites a pet, it transmits heartworm larvae, which mature into long adult heartworms that can live in the heart and surrounding vessels for several years. The number of heartworms living within the heart can be astounding; up to 250 heartworms have been found in a single dog. Pets treated for heartworm don’t develop immunity and can be reinfected at any time by another mosquito bite, so prevention after treatment is essential.

as devastating. Currently, no heartworm treatment exists for cats. Fortunately, heartworm disease is completely and easily preventable. Administering an oral monthly heartworm preventative, or having your veterinarian give an injection every six months, will kill immature heartworms before they mature and are able to inflict damage to the pet. Veterinarians suggest pet owners get their pets tested for heartworms and then discuss prevention or treatment if necessary. The test is quick and simple and requires only a drop of your pet’s blood. Only a veterinarian can prescribe heartworm preventive, and he or she will make sure your pet gets the appropriate protection.

While many pets don’t display symptoms in the early stages, a dog with heartworm disease can show signs including: coughing, fainting, weight loss or difficulty breathing. If left undetected and untreated, heartworm disease can cause sudden death by blocking blood flow to the heart. In dogs, heartworm treatment involves slowly killing the worms without harming the pet. Dogs only sweat from the bottoms of their feet, the only way they can discharge heat is by panting.

Dogs have about 100 different facial expressions, most of them made with the ears.

Dogs have about 10 vocal sounds.

Dogs do not have an appendix.

There are more than 350 different breeds of dogs worldwide.

Dalmatians are born spotless initially pure white, their spots develop as they age.

Contrary to popular belief, dogs aren’t color blind; they can see shades of blue, yellow, green and gray. The color red registers on a grayscale in a dog’s vision.

Most domestic dogs are capable of reaching speeds up to about nineteen miles per hour when running at full speed.

Using their swiveling ears like radar dishes, experiments have shown that dogs can locate the source of a sound in 6/100ths of a second.

Domesticated for more than 10,000 years, the dog was one of the first animals domesticated by humans.

Pets in Small Packages Keep Your Littlest Friend Safe As companies downsize their workforce, Americans are also downsizing their dogs. Labrador retrievers remain America’s number one dog, but dogs less than 20 pounds are enjoying increased popularity. Yorkshire Terriers, Beagles, Boxers, Dachshunds, Bulldogs, Poodles and Shih Tzus all make the American Kennel Association’s (AKC) list of top 10 dog breeds. Small dogs can require less food, less space and less exercise than larger canine companions, making them a perfect fit for the busy homeowner who wants a lap animal to cuddle. But small dogs come with their own challenges. The great outdoors, for example, presents a greater hazard to Chihuahuas than to Great Danes. In April 2009, one 6-pound Chihuahua puppy made the news when she was reunited with her owners after being blown away by a 70-mile-per-hour wind. Fortunately, most small-pet problems prove more mundane. Small pets can squeeze through fences that would

stop larger animals. Areas like pools can pose threats — a very small pet might not be able to climb from the pool. But as small pets become more popular, American pet care companies are creating products to keep tiny companion animals safe. For example, Invisible Fence Brand recently launched its MicroLite Computer Collar, which weighs in at just 1 ounce. The collar is so light, it’s great for dogs and cats, small and large alike. The collar works with a fencing and training system. Invisible Fence Brand collars alert pets with a warning tone when they are about to leave a boundary set by their owner. Unlike traditional fences, Invisible Fence systems can go through rocky terrain and wooded areas and under water. Pet owners can use the system to section off their driveways, pools or gardens or specific rooms in their home, as well the perimeter of their yard. For more information, visit www.InvisibleFence.com.

Jokes & Games

A kindergartner asked his teacher for help putting on his boots one day and she could see why. With her pulling and him pushing, the boots still didn’t want to go on. When the second boot was on, she had worked up a sweat. She almost whimpered when the little boy said, “Teacher, they’re on the wrong feet.” She looked, and sure enough, they were. It wasn’t any easier pulling the boots off than it was putting them on. She managed to keep her cool as together they worked to get the boots back on - this time on the right feet.

May 16-19!

He then announced, “These aren’t my boots.” Getting somewhat annoyed, she once again struggled to help him pull the ill-fitting boots off. He then said, “They’re my brother’s boots. My mom made me wear them.” She didn’t know if she should laugh or cry. She then mustered up the grace to wrestle the boots onto his feet again. She said, “Now, where are your mittens?” He said, “I stuffed them in the toes of my boots...”
