Spring at the Ranch

PUBLISHER For Those Who Serve

As we approach Memorial Day, we honor those who have served and who continue to serve in our military. Each and every day they put their lives on the line so that we may continue to enjoy the freedom with which we have been blessed. The time-honored tradition of honoring our veterans is something we must never lose touch with. But this year, I encourage you to not only honor our military, but those who are on the front lines at home as well — our police officers and firefighters who also put their lives on the line every day. While many have questioned the motives of some of the men and women who protect us, there is no doubt that the majority of men and women who serve on our police forces do so with a desire to protect our safety. As you go out into the community, thank our emergency personnel. Teach your children to respect them and not fear them. This Memorial Day we at Living Local Magazines would like to say “THANK YOU” to our veterans, current military personnel, police officers and firefighters. Because of you, we can feel safe and secure and are blessed to live in freedom. Creating. Connecting. Living Local.

Meals On Reels Fishing derby planned to benefit Birds of Prey Northwest. By Patty Hutchens. Photos courtesy Bill Schaudt.

We drive across the Long Bridge and marvel at the sight of the eagles perched high in the trees. We are captivated by the osprey circling above as we sit back and listen to the musical sounds of the Festival at Sandpoint. These birds have become the unofficial mascot of North Idaho. And while these beautiful creatures leave us in awe, many of us are not aware of the need to provide a habitat and food for the birds that cannot survive in the wild. That is where the passion and dedication of biologist Janie Veltkamp comes in. Since 1993, Veltkamp has owned and operated her nonprofit organization, Birds of Prey Northwest, out of St. Maries, Idaho. Located on 10 acres, Birds of Prey Northwest rescues and rehabilitates eagles, owls, hawks, osprey and falcons in the hopes of returning as many birds back to the wild as possible. But according to Veltkamp, only 50 percent are actually returned, and those that must remain in captivity can live up to 50 years, becoming teaching birds for Veltkamp to educate others about these majestic creatures. Funded strictly by grants and private donations, Birds of Prey Northwest has a $10,000 annual budget for food. But that is only for the fish. The osprey is the only bird that eats exclusively fish; the others will also eat food such as quail

16

and mice. Veltkamp estimates that Birds of Prey Northwest goes through 10,000 to 12,000 pounds of food each year. In an effort to defray the cost of fish for Birds of Prey Northwest, several area residents have gathered to organize a fundraiser that will take place beginning on Saturday, June 20 and will end on Sunday, June 28 at noon. The Meals on Reels Fishing Derby will benefit Birds of Prey Northwest, helping them in their mission to feed the injured birds. The goal of the derby is to catch enough fish, specifically northern pikeminnow, suckers and peamouths, to make a significant contribution to the food needed at Birds of Prey Northwest. “We hope to raise at least $10,000,” said one of the organizers, Jack Knaggs, who adds that they would also like to help with a donation of a freezer to the organization, another item of great need. “Our objective is to provide them (Birds of Prey Northwest) with fish, monetary assistance and to also help reduce the number of prey in the lake,” said Knaggs. “A side benefit will be to reduce the predator base in the lake which helps the kokanee.” Veltkamp and the Birds of Prey Northwest are familiar to many who have attended family

night at the Festival at Sandpoint over the last few years. “She has brought with her a golden eagle, osprey and a peregrine falcon,” said committee member and Festival at Sandpoint staff member, Carol Winget. Tamara Verby also serves on the committee and learned firsthand about the importance of Veltkamp’s work when she discovered an injured eagle near her home. “There were severe abrasions on the wings,” said Verby of the nesting mother that she watched over until Veltkamp arrived. With no government funding, the costs of rehabilitating these birds and keeping them in captivity are extensive — especially given the birds’ longevity. “It depends on the severity of the injury and the amount of human contact,” said Knaggs about whether a bird can return to the wild after rehabilitation. Veltkamp relies not only on private donations and grants, but the approximate 25 volunteers who give of their time and talent. The hand-built cages at Birds of Prey Northwest are large, in part to keep the birds set back from the screen so they are not easy prey for animals such as raccoons. There is an expansive eagle flight run, which measures 100 feet long by 30 feet wide and 30 feet high, that allows fledgling and adult birds a safe place to exercise and heal.

With no government funding, the costs of rehabilitating these birds and keeping them in captivity are extensive — especially given the birds’ longevity. Winget explains that Veltkamp and her volunteers have to be extremely careful when rehabilitating the birds so that the juvenile birds are not imprinted by human contact, the result of which would be the bird attaching to the human as opposed to its own species. If that occurs, the bird is not returned to the wild. In fact, even hand feeding them one time will result in the need for them to live in captivity for the rest of their lives.

At Birds of Prey Northwest, many of the birds are required to be fed three times each day — and many vary in the type of diet they have. It is a major undertaking, but Veltkamp’s passion keeps her going. “The whole idea of the derby is to draw attention to the need,” said Schaudt, adding that they want to be sure and harvest as much fish as they can to lessen the burden on Birds of Prey Northwest.

Committee member Bill Schaudt said that is a message he hopes to get across to as many people as possible, “If you see one of these birds injured, do not feed it,” he said. “These are wild creatures, and she (Veltkamp) is not domesticating them.”

HOME & ESSENTIALS Tips & the Latest Trends

Take Back Your Weekends! SIMPLIFICATION BREEDS SATISFACTION.

BY SARAH FRIESEN.

All winter you’ve looked at that garage piling up with stuff. It’s a disaster, so you’ve dragged everything out to the driveway to reorganize, and put it back together again. Not surprisingly, your kids quickly lose interest and start begging for your attention. “Are you done yet? Come play with me!” You hear it over and over again. Late afternoon arrives, the driveway is still covered with all your prized possessions, and you shake your head in disbelief. And that’s when you finally see the child waiting for you in the backyard because you’re his favorite playmate. At a recent Florida conference for Senior Move Managers, blogger Joshua Becker shared this story to a mesmerized crowd, speaking openly about his personal experience. “I looked out across the yard at my child and saw the one thing I loved more than anything on this planet. And I suddenly realized that my stuff was keeping me away from him.” This experience was the catalyst for the blog BecomingMinimalist.com, as Becker and his wife began a journey of reclaiming their lives, their time, their money and their energy. Living a minimalist lifestyle doesn’t have to be extreme. Becker describes it simply as “the intentional promotion of everything you most value, and the removal of anything that distracts you from it.” Think of how many hours you spend every day, every week, every month simply taking care of

LIVINGLOCAL

WWW.SANDPOINTLIVING.COM MAY 2015

and managing your stuff: buying it, organizing it, cleaning it and storing it. Does the way you spend your time (and your money) reflect what you most value in your life? Are you discontent with how little free time you have available to simply be with those you love? If so, be encouraged. “Discontentment is the greatest seed of change,” Becker stated. Maybe it’s time to let go of those household items and make space in your life for what you value most. Simply put, everything has to be dealt with eventually. When would you rather be free of the clutter and the financial burden — now or later? Here’s some practical advice from Becker: 1. Ask yourself, “How could owning less stuff make my life better?” Rather than looking at the “evils” of excess, look at the positives of having less. For example, I’ll have more space, more energy, more time for my passions, more gratitude, more contentment, less stress, fewer responsibilities and more money. 2. Experiment with what “enough” feels like, after all, you’re the one who gets to define this process. “Living with Less” will look different within each family. 3. There are two steps. The first is owning less, and the second is wanting less. This is where true contentment arrives — so look forward to it!

They look cool on paper, look cool when they are being built, cost a bit of cash to purchase, and then when you move in, you are left looking out at those amazing views, lots of natural light, and more than likely, also the need to get some kind of window coverings. Did your builder budget for window coverings or blinds as part of your mortgage? Some do, but most don’t.

shades over them that provide ultraviolet (UV) protection for your interiors.

The average price to put blinds in a new house is $3,500 to $5,000. Sounds like a lot to spend when you’ve probably gone over budget on a few things throughout the building process and feel like you don’t have any money left. However, more often than not, window coverings are a way to finish out the interior spaces and also protect the finishes you worked so hard to pick out, so don’t scrimp on this investment.

Almost all these options for blinds can be motorized, cordless or have simple retracting cords, which are great for child and pet safety. The days of looping cords around cord cleats is a thing of the past. The latest innovation is blinds that can be operated with your phone or tablet, like your iPad; and most can be battery operated so that you don’t need a power source to each window location. A simple battery pack comes attached to the blind and will allow you to have blinds motorized without having to demo sheetrock and hire an electrician.

You put in expensive hardwood flooring, trim, countertops and maybe even purchased nice furnishings — the last thing you want is the sun fading or damaging those items. Even if you don’t want to block the views by covering up the windows, you should at least put screen

There are many options of window coverings. Some provide sheers with UV protection and vanes that tilt for light control. Some are simple roller shades that have UV blocking qualities, yet still allow you to look through your windows without impeding your view. Some have distinct energy efficiency value that save you money in the winter with heating costs, yet block sun out in the summer to keep things cool on the inside.

You can even have your window coverings programmed to lower each afternoon when the sun is at its hottest time of the

day so your house is nice and cool when you get home from work. Or you can have them programmed to open in the morning to wake you up (on your schedule instead of the 4am wake-up we get during the summer). Those of you with east facing bedrooms know what I am talking about. If you want power and don’t want to have to change batteries once a year, have your architect design your home with power to the window locations that may be too tall for you to reach or all the windows that you may want to have window coverings hardwired. Expect to purchase blinds approximately three to four weeks before you actually need them installed. The windows will need to be trimmed out prior to a final measure for ordering them. Window coverings are very precise, so you should have a professional measure and install them. Bottom line — if you are building, talk to your contractor about window coverings as part of your budget. Not only do they protect your interior finishes and provide privacy, they are something you will probably use on a daily basis. Window coverings truly are an investment that shouldn’t be overlooked.

He nurtures a culture of collaboration among his team and supports their ability as individuals and as a group to provide excellent client service. But Mike has a problem; the owner doesn’t understand the changing environment and actively resists change. Mike easily connects with the people around him, but his conversations with the owner about the changing landscape fall on deaf ears. Over the weeks and months, Mike’s frustration grows, until he realizes he’s come to a moment of choice. Hoping for a different outcome, he puts off his decision for too long. Mike’s story is your story, and it’s my story. How often do you and I sacrifice happiness hoping for a different outcome? “If only.” “I’ll give it another month.” “I understand where he or she is coming from.” “It’s not a good time to _____.” Our inner dialogue persuades us to wait. Soon, weeks or months turn into years, and we feel our dream slipping away. One single move changes all of this. It’s making a decision. Deciding is not wishing or hoping. A real decision occurs when you commit to what you want. The word “decide” originates from the Latin, “decidere,” meaning to cut away. Decision is a mental shift you make that indicates other alternatives are not an option.

Perhaps you’ve been part of a conversation like this: “Where would you like to go for dinner?” “I don’t know. Where would you like to go?” “We could have Thai food.” “Oh, I just ate Thai. How about something else?” “Well, what would you like?” And round and round it goes. In this case, indecision delays dinner.

LIVINGLOCAL

In life, indecision delays more than dinner. It erodes trust in our self. The majority of people cannot answer the question, “What do you want?” Clarity is often sacrificed by a false belief that “If I don’t declare it, I won’t feel bad if it doesn’t happen.” The short-term effect of indecision is to avoid pain, but it fosters numbness as we push things into the future. We forget that indecision is a decision. Its name is Procrastination. Indecision slowly erodes self-esteem. Even the best of the best occasionally become nervous and uncertain and delay decisions. Five common reasons are: • • • • •

Decisions tend to create more work Fear of what others will think Fear of the unknown Fear of making a mistake Feelings of inadequacy: too young, too old, not enough support or education, etc.

Mike has a track record of success, positive feedback from the people who report to him and support from his wife. Nevertheless, in the face of feeling ineffective, frustrated and trapped, his self-esteem suffered. When Mike came to me, I helped him clarify his vision and connect with his “why.” He explored his options, and I offered new perspectives. Very quickly, Mike saw his path forward and confidently made his decision. Within weeks, a new door opened. Today, Mike’s enjoys the freedom to implement ideas that benefit his new clients and employees. Perhaps you’re at a threshold, and it’s time to make a decision. Where in your life or business right now do you need to make a decision? See clearly. Decide confidently. Live joyfully.

PROTECTION FROM MORE THAN JUST RAIN.

BY PATTY HUTCHENS.

Spring is in the air. It inspires us to open the windows, clean out closets and take that lawn furniture out of storage. It’s time to enjoy the beautiful weather. While you are at it, consider a little spring cleaning when it comes to your finances as well. Make an appointment with your insurance agent and perform an annual review of your insurance policies. After all, a lot can change in a year’s time, and you want to make sure you and your family are adequately protected against unforeseen circumstances. Insurance reviews serve several purposes, the most important of which is to make sure that in the case of a catastrophe, whether it is a fire in your home or the sudden death of a family member, you and your loved ones are not left with the stress of an unnecessary financial burden.

So as you are cleaning out those closets and drawers this spring, gather up those insurance policies and make an appointment with your agent.

getting rid of that furniture from your college days can have an impact on the amount of insurance you should have. And what about those sentimental items? Your grandma’s wedding ring? Your wedding ring? The cost of gold has risen significantly over the last few years and so has the value of those keepsakes. By providing your insurance company with an appraisal, they can add a rider onto your policy to specifically cover jewelry or other items of significant value. By making an appointment with your insurance agent and answering a list of questions, you can have the peace of mind knowing that your belongings are covered and you will not be left financially strapped in case of a catastrophic occurrence. Life insurance is another area that should be reviewed annually. Should there be a change of beneficiaries? Is the policy in line with your financial goals? The amount of life insurance one needs changes significantly throughout life. Are the children grown or do you still have college education expenses in your future? Has there been a change in employment? What are your plans for retirement? All these and more significantly impact the amount of life insurance one should carry. So as you are cleaning out those closets and drawers this spring, gather up those insurance policies and make an appointment with your agent. You’ll be glad you did.

You may think you have proper coverage for your home, but you may be surprised that many people are significantly underinsured. Have you been in your home for more than a few years? That alone is a good reason to review your homeowner’s insurance. What would your home cost to rebuild today? Chances are it is far more than that for which you originally insured it. Does your current policy insure you for replacement value? It’s a good question to verify with your agent.

Call us today to clean up your insurance policies.

Vaccinate! PROTECTING OUR ANIMALS FROM DEADLY DISEASES IS JUST A SHOT AWAY.

BY DR. DAWN MEHRA, NORTH IDAHO ANIMAL HOSPITAL.

We hear it all the time. We read our reminders that come in the mail — vaccinate! In both human and veterinary medicine, vaccination programs have greatly impacted the loss of life and damage caused from infectious disease. In humans, diseases such as polio, measles and mumps have become aberrations rather than daily occurrences. In veterinary medicine, distemper, parvo and feline leukemia are now occasional rather than continual. But the general public (including pet owners), and sometimes even healthcare providers, can become complacent as the number of cases almost disappear over time.  An outbreak of Canine Distemper Virus (CDV) at Panhandle Animal Shelter (PAS) was confirmed recently through laboratory tests at Washington State University. The virus, a close relative to human measles, is not contagious to humans or to cats. It can, however, affect other canines (wolves, foxes, coyotes), as well as species from different families such as raccoons, ferrets and bears. Outbreaks of CDV occur primarily in very young, unvaccinated puppies whose mothers are also unvaccinated and often arrive through

24

LIVINGLOCAL

rescue situations. Thus, CDV is primarily seen in shelters and humane societies. Despite protocols designed to reduce the transfer of diseases within a shelter such as PAS, outbreaks still inevitably occur. The difficulty in eliminating these outbreaks is primarily due to CDV’s long incubation period — the time between exposure to the virus and becoming sick. This can be as long as 18 days, and so it makes absolute isolation very difficult. The incubation period of the human influenza virus, for example, is only two or three days.  “PAS follows strict guidelines to reduce contagious disease problems to the absolute minimum,” explains Dr. Robert Pierce of Sandpoint’s North Idaho Animal Hospital, “However, they are also in the business of rescuing animals and so this will occasionally happen. Sadly, it is simply a natural consequence of doing the right thing.”

WWW.SANDPOINTLIVING.COM MAY 2015

CDV is spread through contact with bodily fluids such as saliva or aerosol droplets. The signs of CDV include fever, coughing, runny eyes, nasal discharge, lack of appetite and dehydration. Dogs may develop diarrhea and neurological problems such as twitching or seizures. Treatment is generally supportive — fluids, antibiotics to prevent secondary pneumonia, and nutritional support. The mortality rate in young puppies can be high.

Wagging Cues “PAS follows strict guidelines to reduce contagious disease problems to the absolute minimum.” PAS recently rescued a desperate group of dogs from California. One of these dogs had puppies with her, and she is the suspected source of the virus. Her litter is fine, however, three puppies from another litter contracted the disease; two have died and one is being treated at a local veterinary hospital. Cooperation and communication between PAS and local veterinarians has led to a relatively fast diagnosis and containment of the problem. Because the general population of animals at PAS routinely receives vaccines that include CDV, recent adoptions and dogs currently in the shelter are at very low-risk for contracting the disease. The average well-vaccinated American dog is not highly susceptible either as the distemper vaccination is very effective.  “This is one of those reminders we get on occasion,” said Dr. Pierce, “Make sure your pets are current on their vaccines — this is a deadly disease outbreak that PAS has handled extremely well.” Dr. Dawn Mehra, North Idaho Animal Hospital 320 S. Riding for a Cause CHAFE 150 BENEFITS PROGRAM THAT ASSISTS CHILDREN ON THE AUTISM SPECTRUM.

BY PATTY HUTCHENS. PHOTOS BY JASON DUCHOW PHOTOGRAPHY.

If there is one thing people in Sandpoint agree on, it is the willingness of the community to go above and beyond to help an organization or individual in need. And that is exactly what Mel Dick and others involved in the CHAFE 150 Gran Fondo bicycle ride are counting on this year. “We are looking forward to another fabulous year,” said committee member, Elana Westphal, of the event set for June 20. “We already have over 50 sponsors.” In its eighth year, the CHAFE 150 has raised approximately $60,000 for the Lake Pend Oreille School District and its programs. Previously put on by Panhandle Alliance for Education for it’s Ready! for Kindergarten Program, the ride was taken over by the

LIVINGLOCAL

Sandpoint Rotary club three years ago. “We wanted to continue the tradition of education,” said Dick of Rotary’s decision to donate the proceeds to the district’s programs that benefit children on the autism spectrum. The CHAFE 150 is a 150-mile ride that takes in the area’s breathtaking landscape and has received accolades for being one of the most scenic rides in the country. There are break stops along the way hosted by various organizations including Lake Pend Oreille School District, the Angels Over Sandpoint, Sandpoint Rotary, Laughing Dog Brewery and an area church. For several years the ride has also included an 80-mile route, and due to its growth in popularity and the desire to include

27

more riders of various skill levels, last year CHAFE 150 organizers added a 30-mile ride. The youngest competitor was then 6-year-old Taylor Ailport who successfully completed the journey. Her enthusiasm has inspired others her age to take up the challenge this year. “We have a system to make sure she is safe on the road,” said her mom, Lisa, who rides along with Taylor, adding that Taylor is setting her sights on the 80-mile ride in the near future. Organizers stress that the ride, while timed, is just that — a ride and not a race. And it’s not just locals who get involved. Last year there were participants from places such as Maine, Florida, New England, San Diego and Vancouver. “We have room for 500 riders, and we’ve been in the neighborhood of 400 recently,” said Dick. The registration fees are $75 for the 150 and 80-mile rides and $45 for the 30-mile ride. “We also ask each rider to raise a minimum of $50,” said Westphal. But that never seems to be a problem as many of the riders are competitive both on and off the bike. “We already have someone who has raised nearly $4,000,” said Westphal, who adds that they have individual awards for the top fundraisers. For those who raise over $4,000, there are prizes that include a bicycle valued at $1,500. There are also prizes awarded at the $1,000, $500 and $250 levels.

For many, the driving force to donate is that 100 percent of the money raised stays local, with the cost of the ride being covered by sponsorships. And the need is great. “According to the Center for Disease Control, 1 in 68 children will be diagnosed with autism,” said Dick. “And it’s five times more common in boys.” With the money raised at the CHAFE 150, Lake Pend Oreille School District has been able to fund new programs for those on the autism spectrum. And that is a welcomed relief to families.

But it is not just the school programs that benefit; the entire town receives an economic benefit from the event. “Sandpoint is becoming known for this ride in the biking community,” said Westphal. Those who come from out of town to participate eat in our restaurants, stay in our hotels and shop at our local stores. If you want to join in the fun on June 20, there will be an after party at City Beach that hosted by Trinity at City Beach, and the entire community is welcome. For more information or to donate, log onto www.chafe150.org.

According to Dr. Joy Jansen, the Director of Special Services for Lake Pend Oreille School District, there are over 100 families in the district who have benefited from the funds donated. Dr. Jansen said last year they used those funds to structure a foundation to build upon in the future; one that can be easily sustained. An important part of the process was to form an Autism Resource Team (ART) in each building. The team consists of a special educator, general educator, a speech and language therapist and a physical therapist. “It’s more efficient to have a team within the building to work with the teachers and those who interact with the children,” said Jansen, adding that there are school districts that pay for these kinds of resources.

In its eighth year, the CHAFE 150 has raised approximately $60,000 for the Lake Pend Oreille School District and its programs.

business that makes High Mark a success; nearly two years ago they purchased the Stove Corral. “We saw an opportunity and decided to purchase it when Ken (Russell, the previous owner) was ready to retire,” shared McArthur.

Owned by Tim McConnell and Matt McArthur since 2005, High Mark Heating & Cooling assists its customers with all facets of heating and cooling including service and installation on everything from new construction to remodels.

McArthur and McConnell recently made the decision to move the Stove Corral to the same location as High Mark on McNearney Road in Ponderay. “We wanted both businesses under one roof so that we could provide better customer service,” said McConnell.

They are a Bryant factory authorized dealer for both furnaces and air conditioning. “We specialize in ultra-high efficiency equipment,” said McConnell, who adds that Bryant offers a 10-year warranty on parts and a 90-day guarantee on service.

Managed by Sheila Toldness, the Stove Corral carries fireplaces, freestanding gas and wood stoves and provides service to all the products it sells. To help their customers choose the best product for their needs, they will come out and evaluate your home’s heating and cooling needs, measure your space and recommend what will be the most efficient.

And while it always seems that problems arise in the middle of the night or on weekends, that is not a concern for customers of High Mark Heating & Cooling as they will perform service calls 24-hours a day seven days a week. High Mark Heating & Cooling has worked on many homes in developments such as Maplewood, Dover Bay and the Idaho Club as well as commercial buildings such as the Hive. They have earned a quality reputation and work closely with several area contractors. But it is not just their heating and cooling

Toldness said they have a new computer program in their showroom that will help customers design the space where their fireplace will go and allow them to see it with a variety of options before making the final decision. “You can pick out the background of the fireplace, the log set and doors,” said Toldness. “All the options come to life on the big screen.” The brands they carry include popular ones such as Lopi, Avalon, Fireplace Xtrordinair and

SANDPOINT

IN FOCU S SANDPOINT’S BIGGEST PARTY.

Lost in the ’50s celebrates 30 years. By Patty Hutchens. Photos by Jessica Herbig & courtesy The Injectors. It was 30 years ago when Carolyn Gleason organized the first ever Lost in the ’50s weekend in Sandpoint. And what started as a desire to bring a bit of Motown to a small town in North Idaho has grown into an annual tradition for many. Now people from all over the country arrive in their vintage cars, poodle skirts and penny loafers, and turn back the clocks of time. When Gleason first began, she knew she would need more than just music to draw people in. But what was that extra element going to be? She and a friend considered showcasing vintage cars. Gleason appealed to locals, going to door to door asking those with vintage cars to bring them to the event. That first year, there were 26 cars, and by the third year, it had grown to over 150. This year’s 30-year celebration promises to be bigger and better than ever! On Thursday, May 14, the weekend kicks off at the Panida Theater with the 11th annual Rock ‘n’ Roll Heaven. Sure to be a sellout, this show features Justin Shandor, Lance Lipinsky and Bobby Brooks Wilson who will keep everyone on their feet with their Elvis, Jerry Lee and Jackie Wilson impersonations. On Friday evening at 6pm, the Classic Car Parade, featuring hundreds of unique vintage vehicles, will travel through downtown entertaining many. But don’t head home just yet. Following the parade will be the street dance at Jeff Jones Town Square where everyone from young kids to adults can dance the night away. If you are looking for something more adult oriented, there will be a show and dance at Bonner County Fairgrounds. The evening will feature Rocky and the Rollers and the Crests featuring Tommy Mara. Saturday will bring an opportunity to see the classic cars up close with the downtown car show, which will run from 9am to 4pm. Following a day downtown, you will want to get into your dancing shoes and head up to the Bonner County Fairgrounds where none other than Frankie Avalon will serenade the crowd. Also appearing will be the Dixie Cups and another appearance by Rocky and the Rollers. The weekend will wrap up with the traditional Aspirin Rally 5K Fun Run and Car Rally starting at Second Avenue Pizza on Sunday at 10am, followed by a car rally at 11:30am.

ABOVE Classic cars will line the streets during the parade and later at the car show.

Panhandle Animal Shelter’s Yappy Hours are “off the hook,” and they are off-leash too! If you are a dog-lover, you know that “off-leash” means a good time for your dog, and these canine-centered happenings have been much barked about for years.

Man’s Best Friend

So what is a yappy hour? It’s a happy hour that you can attend with your dog. Your friendly pooch can socialize with other dogs in an enclosed area. Some yappy hours are held inside, like at Laughing Dog Brewing, where your amiable dog is welcome any time, not just at yappy hour. Other venues have an outside fenced-in area, such as at Trinity at City Beach Restaurant. At this venue, yappy hour is held outdoors on the resort‘s grounds where there is a great view of beautiful Lake Pend Oreille.

TAKE YOUR DOG TO YAPPY HOUR — YOU WILL BE HELPING A GREAT CAUSE. BY CHRIS SHAFER, DOG ABOUT TOWN NW. PHOTOS BY TIDES OF LIFE PHOTOGRAPHY.

Whichever venue, dogs roam freely and mingle with tails wagging and noses sniffing while their owners look on and do some socializing of their own. For the two-legged guests there are libations and music, but, of course, the musicians are often upstaged by small bands of playful dogs, who are naturally entertaining. If you haven’t done so yet, do yourself and your dog a favor and fetch some fun at a Panhandle Animal Shelter (PAS) Yappy Hour. Once you’ve been to one, you’ll be back for more because they are a delightful event and, also, socializing your pooch and donating to a great cause has never been easier. Proceeds benefit PAS, and the local business that raises the most amount of money wins the coveted fire hydrant trophy!

animals who currently call PAS home, but you will be helping pet owners who may be struggling financially. “Last year we gave away over 2,400 pounds of dog and cat food,” said PAS Executive Director Mandy Evans, sharing that the goal is to keep animals in their homes, thus helping provide food when a pet owner is struggling can go a long way towards that. Sadie Nitcy Sandpoint High School As captain of this year’s tennis team, Sadie Nitcy looks back at her years of competition and is grateful for the experience. “The thing about tennis that I enjoy the most has been having Kent Anderson as my coach,” said Sadie. “Having started playing for Kent in seventh grade and still being with him six years later, I feel lucky to have such a great coach with a consistent presence in my tennis career.” Sadie shares that one of the biggest challenges she has faced has been learning how to simply play the game and not let the chatter from across the net get to her. But, she said, it has taught her patience. “While it can be easy for me to get in my own head and as a result have that affect my ability to play and to play well, I try to remember that it is just a match and that everything will be all right,” shared Sadie.

In addition to excelling in tennis, Sadie has a 4.031 GPA and is also active on the Cedar Post (SHS’s student newspaper), student council and looks for service opportunities that come her way.

Talon said one of the biggest challenges he has faced in baseball is putting too much thought into certain situations and becoming nervous. Instead, he tries to focus on what the task at hand is at that very moment.

In the fall Sadie will attend the University of Idaho where she will study organizational science. Uncertain of a specific career, Sadie said she has a passion for service, organization and government. “I would like to somehow incorporate each of these to create my career.”

But nervous or not, Talon said he loves the adrenaline and anticipation that baseball provides. “I like the suspense as to whether or not a ball will be hit to you, then the rush and excitement of making the play.”

With her youngest of four children graduating from Sandpoint High School this year, one may wonder why Geraldine Lewis would be throwing her hat in the ring for the Lake Pend Oreille School Board trustee elections on May 19. The answer is simple — she has been committed to quality education for nearly 20 years in Sandpoint and has no intention to stop now.

Geraldine Lewis MEET THE CANDIDATE RUNNING FOR DISTRICT 4 TRUSTEE FOR LAKE PEND OREILLE SCHOOL BOARD.

Geraldine attended high school in the Denver area and met her husband, Sagle native Jim Lewis, when they both attended Gonzaga University where Geraldine received her Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering. Geraldine and Jim’s four children, the eldest of whom are twins who are graduating from college this spring, went through the entire Lake Pend Oreille school system from kindergarten through grade 12, and their mother was with them every step of the way.

From volunteer in the classroom to her participation on the board for the Sandpoint High School (SHS) CARE parent group, Geraldine has integrated herself into the education system in Sandpoint. “I have facilitated the SHS effort in support of the levy for the past four levy elections. I have also been involved as staff and board member with the Panhandle Alliance For Education since 2007,” said Geraldine. “My interest in seeing public education thrive makes running for school board trustee a very natural next step for me.”

Thrive “My interest in seeing public education thrive makes running for school board trustee a very natural next step for me.”

Geraldine shares that she has seen firsthand what a public education can do for both students and the entire community. And, if elected, she plans to be thoroughly prepared.

“I have been attending the school board meetings all year to see exactly what work goes on behind the scenes for the Board of Trustees,” said Geraldine, who has heard reports from each principal in the district and has observed the dialogue on budget planning and curriculum discussions. “This has given me the impression that this school board is deliberate in their decisions and in their desire to do what’s best for our students’ education.” She has been impressed with the progress that has been made in recent years and wants to be part of the future of education in Sandpoint. “The climbing test scores and school ratings over the past several years have been telling the story of all the hard work being done in this district; by an inspired superintendent, a cohesive school board and gifted teachers and administrators,” said Geraldine. ”I feel strongly that public education is one of the great equalizers, and knowledge is power for our youth!”

“If you worried about falling off the bike, you’d never get on.” – Lance Armstrong

DID YOU KNOW?

Bicycling is the second most popular outdoor activity in the U.S. Forty-nine percent of trips made by Americans in our daily life are less than three miles; 39 percent are less than two miles; and 24 percent are less than one mile — this makes biking the ideal mode of transportation for many of these excursions. Three hours of biking each week can help reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke by as much as 50 percent. Adolescents who bike are 48 percent less likely to be overweight as adults.

Cycling is again a growing recreational trend. It is a unique way to travel and maintain your health, and it provides an opportunity to slow down and enjoy the scenery. Cycling harkens us back to a simpler time when we relied on our legs, rather than our automobiles, to take us from place to place. While it seems that bicycles have been around forever, the earliest one was a wooden scooter-like device called a celerifere. It was invented by Comte Mede de Sivrac of France in 1790. However, it was soon after improved by the Baron Karl von Drais de Sauerbrun in 1816. He made a model with a steering bar attached to the front wheel and named this improvement a draisienne. The draisienne had two wheels but no pedals. This cycle was propelled forward much like a scooter since the rider had to use his feet.

In the 1860’s cycles were again improved. These early bicycles, which were called velocipedes, were difficult to operate because they possessed very large front wheels. At the time, cycle designers incorrectly believed that bigger tires equaled more speed. To make them even more cumbersome, early tires were made of wood or metal and solid rubber tires were added much later. In the 1880s airfilled tires were added to the bicycle along with a chain with sprockets. The modern derailleur gear system was added relatively recently — in the 1970’s. May is Bike to Work month, so there is no better time than the present to take advantage of the cycling life. Cycling to work has many physical health benefits but also mental health benefits since you are out in nature. Most of all, whether you cycle to work or are a weekend road warrior, cycling allows you to connect authentically to nature and tap into

Traffic congestion wastes nearly three billion gallons of gas per year in the U.S. For every one mile pedaled rather than driven, about one pound of carbon dioxide is saved.

While cycling in groups is generally safer, it is a good idea to follow a few road rules to keep yourself and others safe. While some might think wearing a helmet is the last word in safety for cyclists, it is only the beginning. the sheer power of your body. There is nothing better than having the sun on your face, the wind in your hair and breathing fresh air. After a cycling excursion and experiencing the sheer beauty of nature, one is left with a very satisfying feeling. Recently, adventure travel has taken off. Travelers are finding that there are too many important experiences to have that cannot be experienced by traveling only by car or on a tour bus. These companies offer tours where one spends the day hiking or biking, depending on the terrain. Vacationers get to experience the pace of life where they are visiting, having time to stop and smell the roses, the mangoes or the coconuts. It is a rare opportunity to immerse oneself in the culture and scenery of a region while being able to pick up on subtle nuances that others may not see. The founder of “Backroads Travel” said it all when he noted, “Active travel is the difference between looking at life and living it.” The most recent innovation during the past several years has been the electric bike because it allows even those with limited mobility or stamina to enjoy cycling. It’s wonderful that everyone in our community

Every cyclist needs to know how to avoid getting hit by a car. Some common examples of collisions occur when cars are turning right, cars are leaving a parking lot, a cycler rides too close to the side of parked cars, or a cyclist is riding across a crosswalk. While these are only a few common scenarios, approaches for staying safe will help to prevent accidents. Here are some tips that cyclists can follow to stay safe: • Signal all your turns • Wear reflective clothing • Get a mirror • Get a horn • Get a headlight and rear light • Wave to make yourself known visually • Avoid headphones or media devices that will cause you to be distracted • Choose slow streets and back roads Finally, the most important tip involves a mind-set. Literally ride as if you were invisible to everyone around you. The reason this is important is because even the most well-intentioned motorists may not see you. Riding as if you were invisible allows you to be proactive since you should never rely on motorists to see you. If you rely on motorists to see you, you put your safety in their hands. Erin O‘Conner once aptly noted that, “Caution is the key to safe cycling. I’m aware that cars are bigger than me, but I feel quite safe. I’m in control, liberated and free, when I’m on my bike.” Make yourself intentionally seen by using visual signals while maintaining the mindset that you are invisible to motorists. Thus, both the invisibility mindset and the proactivity of creating visual signals work together to keep you safe. Heed Lance Armstrong’s advice and don’t sit on the sidelines. Get on a bike and change your life. After all, cycling is a wonderful leisure activity and whether you are on a road bike, a mountain bike or an electric bike, there is fun to be had for all. Whether you are a motorist or a cyclist, be sure to share the road, and let everyone enjoy life at his or her own speed. Don’t forget to wear your helmet!

National Bike Month TAKE TIME TO ENJOY THE SCENERY. BY MELODY VANHORN.

Communities across the United States are taking advantage of the warmer weather and strapping on their bike helmets this May in honor of National Bike Month. Looking to join the action? Here are several ways to help get you out on your bike and enjoy the scenery. Check with your schools. Many of the schools in our area are holding various contests and events while encouraging their students to put on their helmets and get active as they make a choice to safely either ride their bike, board or scooter this month. Local businesses are also getting in on the fun as they promote the benefits of biking to work. On Friday, May 8, riders are welcome to stop at Outdoor Experience from 6:30 to 10am for their free pancake breakfast, while Evans Brother’s is offering a free cup of coffee all day to those who bike over to their shop. On May 16 the Pend Oreille Pedalers will host a Bike Swap at the Eureka Institute Building, 513 Oak, where you can bring in your used bikes and accessories to trade for cash from 9 to 11am during check-in. The actual sale will run from 12 to 2pm so

make sure you stick around before all the great deals are snapped up. On May 20 we encourage you to join the international Ride of Silence to honor those who have been killed or injured while bicycling. Riders will leave from City Beach at 6pm at a slow speed for approximately eight miles with the intention of raising awareness for all to peaceably share the road. Take the time to enjoy the perfect opportunity to dust off your helmets as you celebrate the many reasons to ride your bike.

DID YOU KNOW? Food tastes different when in flight: Studies show that our ability to perceive salty tastes is weakened by the cabin pressure. For example, tomato juice, which is high in sodium, will actually taste sweet to those who drink it in flight. Control towers: Because those in the aircraft control towers need to be able to see the entire airfield at all times, the glass in control towers is installed at a 15 degree angle to prevent glare and reflection. Flight attendant standards: In the late 1930s, flight attendants had to be under the age of 30 and weigh less than 118 pounds. In fact, there was even a requirement at one time that all flight attendants had to be registered nurses. Meals in the cockpit: On commercial airline flights, the pilot and co-pilot never eat the same meal. The reason for this is in case of food poisoning brought on by a certain food, one pilot will still be well enough to fly.

In this world of pressures, fears and even survival, the enjoyment of life can easily get lost. It seems difficult to find the time to relish in those things that truly give us joy. And in the world of technology, it becomes even more difficult to disconnect from the stresses of life. It is my hope that you will be inspired by my story. You are encouraged to sit back and reflect on one simple question — what in life provides you with the greatest joy? Being in the outdoors, spending time with family, writing that book you have always wanted to write but never found the time? Or maybe it’s a bucket list item: skydiving, skiing in the Alps or taking a cruise. Whatever it is that brings you enjoyment, peace and fulfillment, hopefully you will take the time to do it. For me, I have found that my passion is flying. And the great part is that it is something my wife enjoys as well. Skimming through the air is one of mankind’s greatest achievements

— not for war, not even for fast travel, but in pursuing the dream of man to fly and to see and experience something similar to that of the life of a bird. As a pilot, I really do get to fly! We have already had many exciting adventures and have made it our goal to fly around the world in the next five years. When we are not working, that is. Always wanting to put safety first, I chose to fly our plane to Tampa during the fall months to avoid any potential bad weather that could come with a cross-country flight during the winter months. We later took a commercial flight to Tampa to take advantage of the blue sky flying that the Caribbean brings during the months of December and January. On one segment of our travels, we flew from Tampa, Florida to Colombia, South America and back —traveling through the Bahamas, Antilles and Grenadines with stops in many places along the way. Our flying machine is a bright red 1947 Bonanza with 260 hp,

The 24/7 industry: At any given moment, there are 61,000 people airborne over the United States mainland, with over 29,000 flights operating daily from the U.S. each day.

round gauges, RNAV (an area navigation that provides more lateral freedom and greater use of available airspace) and an Aera 500 GPS. The plane is relatively light in weight and handles like a sports car. My wife, who is a student pilot (C-152), is my only co-pilot and serves as navigator and pre-flight specialist.

risks. Another concern was that the planned route coming and going was over a lot of water. Unexpectedly, we found Venezuela air traffic control willing to clear us to fly over its north coast and through the restricted areas. That enabled us to avoid flying the over water route to Aruba.

You may not be surprised to learn that a bright red airplane attracts attention everywhere — a red star in a world of white planes! We quickly discovered that people go out of their way to comment on it. The age of the plane also makes it seem attainable to many people working at airports who pose questions such as how much it cost ($27,000), or how it flies. It also opens up a discussion for them to share about the planes they own. A NetJets pilot in Grenada found us at our hotel; he had noticed the plane at the airport and wondered how it got there. He was on his way to Los Angeles, and we were on our way to Colombia. We had a wonderful talk about flying, and I had the impression that if I had offered him a seat, the jet would have remained in Grenada.

Barranquilla was hazy, and we didn’t have the airfield in sight until we were within a few miles. Arriving, we were directed to follow a truck to the terminal where the narcotics police and others visited us. I speak fluent Spanish (I was general counsel for U.S. companies in Mexico for 17 years), so when the search got a bit ridiculous, I told the officials that we were flying into Colombia not out of it. They laughed and it ended the search. Customs and immigration procedures were somewhat challenging — just to find the right people. We did not use a handler, but if you don’t speak Spanish, I would advise to get a handler. A woman named Claudia staffed the airport civil aviation office. She warmly welcomed us and insisted on taking us to her favorite hotel — the Barranquilla Plaza. On the way, we took a detour so she could introduce us to her child and parents.

Part of the joy of flying is in the discovery of new places; cities and towns we never imagined would bring such adventure. Barranquilla, Colombia is one of those places, an unexpectedly cool city that should be included in any Caribbean tour. Grenada is the must-go place, but I am starting with Colombia because it was an unexpected joy. It was with a bit of trepidation that we flew there, but if you are going to be a gypsy you have to take

The hotel was an unexpected pleasure, and we were grateful for Claudia. Had it not been for her guidance, we probably would have ended up at one of the rather sterile international hotels. When traveling, it is always fun, and usually more adventurous, to get the locals’ perspective. The Plaza was a local business, a

tourist hotel of very good quality. There was delicious food, a swimming pool and they even provided rooftop rumba dancing to a live band. We went up to the roof about midnight, danced and left before closing at 3am. My wife and I can fake anything — even the rumba, and once we got up and danced, we quickly became part of the group, which included the cute waiters and waitresses who were dressed with stylish Cuban hats and clothes. Also at the hotel we enjoyed café con leche — hot coffee and hot milk poured from separate containers in your preferred mix — and a variety of delicious and unique breakfast food. I enjoyed fried platano, a food similar to a banana that was served with chocolate bread rolls and eggs. All of this was included in our room price, which was a mere $78 per night. Barranquilla is a modern and clean city. I encourage anyone who visits to walk everywhere within reach. For the out of reach areas, we hired a taxi driver, Javier who was a local and was very proud of his city. He

Flying is something we love to do, but it is not for everyone. I encourage everyone to do things they enjoy — even if a bit risky and pushing the economic envelope. gave us the grand tour! There was the tram transporting people out to the spot where the Magdalena River meets the ocean; we saw the colonial section of the city, the outlying areas, and Javier’s favorite — anything to do with Carnival, Colombia’s most important folklore celebration. It begins forty days before Holy Week and includes four days of activities. While Carnival is celebrated in many places throughout the world, Barranquilla’s celebration is one of the largest. Javier shared with us that Barranquilla was a rumba city and the people were “rumberos” (rumba dancers). My wife and I enjoy dancing so is not a surprise that we enjoyed this place so much. Barranquilla is also an industrial city with a solid economic base. I was first there years ago

when people had revolvers stuck in their belts — that has changed. Now iPhones are in their belts. I have to say, I missed the Wild West feel. A fun side note Javier shared with us was the history behind Juan Valdez coffee. According to Javier, Juan Valdez is a real person who came from humble beginnings. We have all seen the Colombian coffee ads with the man and his burro. That is Juan. His coffee venture went big, and he started the Juan Valdez coffee houses a la Starbucks style. The Juan Valdez coffee houses were nice and served good coffee, so we felt right at home since we are Seattle area people. Good coffee, pastries, Juan Valdez coffee mugs

Georges, Grenada, another must stop if you travel to the Caribbean. While I love adventure, when we left Colombia, it was with a bit of apprehension that I filed my flight plan to fly direct to Barahona, Dominican Republic. There were gale warnings, and the marine forecast was grim — a semi-perfect storm due to 40 mph surface winds, but the sky was clear for the first 200 miles and then the satellite photos on the Internet showed 150 miles of clouds with low tops. With Visual Flight Rules — a set of regulations under which a pilot operates an aircraft in weather conditions generally clear enough to allow the pilot to see where the aircraft is going — at 10,500 feet, we hit the clouds just about 200 miles out and flew around a few high tops. We had smooth sailing until my auxiliary tank went dry about 20 minutes early. I was quickly reminded that our lives depended on a running engine. Landfall near the Haiti and the Dominican coast was spectacular. There were mountains and a breathtaking coastline — flying up the coast to Barahona was worth the trip across the

sea. Arriving from Barranquilla, Colombia, we had four different types of officials that looked us over and wanted to look at the plane. I told them that I was honored that they knew we were coming and sent a welcome party to greet us as VIPs. I asked why the president didn’t show up. The formality ended with laughter. One of the officials even gave us a ride to a local hotel, welcoming us to Barahona. For me, this trip was an adventure I will never forget. The earth, water and sky were magnificent, the people were incredibly friendly and the places were very cool to visit. For some reason fewer people are flying. Is it due to cost? We have planes (or access to them) and as such, in a sense, have a privilege that few have. But some have said it is due to fear. I decided long ago not to let fear rule my life, and I am so glad. If I let fear rule, I would not have made the trip either because of flying issues or fear of dealing with entry and exit to and from the countries. I would not have experienced the places and people I was so fortunate to make part of my life’s memories.

Flying is something we love to do, but it is not for everyone. I encourage everyone to do things they enjoy — even if a bit risky and pushing the economic envelope. I am not saying that we should live just for ourselves — much to the contrary — we should live and do right. A part of what makes the trip through life enjoyable is to live it with at least some activities that make it fun and enjoyable. So go out and enjoy the life you were blessed with!

The Knitty Gritty PACKABLE, COORDINATING KNITS TO KEEP YOU LOOKING COOL AND FEELING COOLER. BY SARAH POLYAKOV.

Summer is almost here, and many of us are also planning our summer vacations. Whether we’re headed on a trip to the beach, mountains or city, there is a way to look fashionable and flawless while packing light. Nothing is better for summer dressing than light, soft, cotton knits. They are both easy on the eyes and on sensitive skin. But there is an even better reason to wear knits. They are versatile, they pack easily, take up little space and are easy to wash and dry. They breathe well on hot days and generally do not wrinkle. They can also be worn to dress up or down with the right accessories. The Power of Three To look your best, focus on knitted pieces in three coordinating colors. Since combinations of black and white and navy and white are hot this summer, I recommend picking pieces in these three colors. You can do so much with a pair of black slacks, a white skirt, a white boat neck T-shirt, a black square neck tank top and a light summer weight knitted navy colored sweater for layering. European Vacation If you decide to take a trip to Europe this summer, there is an easy way to look chic with the outfit pieces listed above. On Monday, choose black slacks and a white boat neck T-shirt for exploring the Coliseum. On Tuesday at dinner, wear your white skirt and

black square neck tank top as you sip wine on a sidewalk café. Pair it with a chunky necklace and sandals. On Wednesday for a shopping excursion, go for all white by pairing a white skirt and your white boat neck T-shirt. Tie your navy sweater around your shoulders as a wearable layering accessory. On Thursday, pull on black slacks, your lightweight navy sweater and a chunky necklace for touring museums. On Friday, go for all black by wearing your black slacks and your black square neck tank. Wear bold and bright accessories and red lipstick. You can go anywhere with this classic look and never go out of style. Of course, there are more combinations to be worn with these pieces, but it goes to show how many classy outfits can be made from a few key pieces. Packing Perfection Head to your local sporting good store and pick up square, mesh, zippered bags in small, medium and large. Small bags are for undergarments and socks. Medium-sized bags are for shirts. Large bags are for skirts, pants and sweaters. When you’re ready to pack, gently roll up your items and place them side-by-side in the mesh bags. Not only will this prevent them from wrinkling, it will also maximize space in your suitcase so that you have more room for souvenirs. Finally, don’t forget sunglasses, a wide brimmed hat and your sunscreen!

COVER STORY BEYOND THE GATES

The Navy opens up about its research at the Bayview Naval Facility. By Jani Gonzalez.

It’s no secret that the Navy has a research facility in Bayview, Idaho. Some of the equipment and submarines are in plain view when you drive into town. Although what goes on behind the gated area is mostly classified, the Navy has been open about some of the work it does in the name of our country’s defense. Navy’s Mission in Bayview: Acoustic Stealth Technology The naval facility began in 1942 as part of the Farragut Naval Training Station. After WWII, the training station closed in 1947, and the Navy turned much of the property over to the state but held on to 22 acres. There are still boathouses and a pier leftover from that era. The research and testing began immediately. “We’re proud stewards of the lake,” Alan Griffitts, Detachment Director, said. “The community gives us great support.” The Navy even protects an area where the Kokanee salmon spawn at the facility. What Lake Pend Oreille offers is an environment perfect for collecting data on acoustic stealth technology. Navy researchers collect data on how “quiet” the submarines’ design and equipment are. The quieter the submarines are, the less likely they may be detected by enemy sonar systems. In addition, the serenity of the lake offers an optimal environment for obtaining extremely accurate data because there is little extraneous noise. The lake bottom is also optimal for acoustic testing: Its mountainous shores are clear of debris and sea life. It’s the deepest lake in Idaho,

measuring 1150 ft. deep, and the fifth deepest in the country. Much of the testing takes place at night after recreational boaters have gone home. Acoustic Research and Testing The facility at Bayview is the Acoustic Research Detachment (ARD) managed by the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Carderock Division in Maryland, which is a division of the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA). About one hundred people are employed at the facility - half are employed by the Department of Navy and the others are contracted employees. They use large scale submarine models to test ship design and its acoustic impact. In other words, a submarine’s ability to be quiet.

about the NSWC Carderock Division. “They allow us to put a high fidelity systems on models, capture data and assess what it would be like on a full-scale model,” Griffitts said. They don’t test sonar systems or weapons, he noted. The focus is on design and on making submarines quiet enough to bypass detection and also withstand the pressure of deep waters. “Pressure is a submarine’s biggest enemy,” he said.

“Hydrophones convert pressure waves into an electrical signal. We can then measure that electric signal and make a determination of the pressure wave that’s passed it,” Griffitts said. “We use them to measure how much noise occurs. We want the machines and submarines to be quiet. These sensors measure how quiet they are.” Model Submarines One of the primary models used is the Large Scale Vehicle (LSV-2), named “Cutthroat” by Athol Elementary students back in 2000. It’s the world’s largest autonomous underwater vehicle. It sits on a platform that’s lowered into the water, towed, then submerged when its ballast tanks are filled with water.

Our main mission is to make quiet submarines, reducing their potential of detection from enemy sonar to make them more effective in safely and effectively accomplishing their mission.

“Our main mission is to make quiet submarines, reducing their potential of detection from enemy sonar to make them more effective in safely and effectively accomplishing their mission. The ARD is instrumental in the design of the last four classes of submarines and future classes too,” Griffitts said. “Building an effective platform is how we fulfill that mission.”

The models utilized at the ARD are onethird to one-fifth of the full ship’s size. The research done at Bayview includes evaluation of submarine design, environmental quality systems, hull shape, propulsor noise reduction, structure materials, acoustic signature, machinery systems and vulnerability and survivability systems as listed in Navy literature

74

Researchers perform a variety of tests to measure pressure and noise from submarine movement. A yellow platform visible on the lake is a static test facility that’s over 600 ft. of water. Researchers lower various devices using cranes and winches for acoustic testing. Another type of experiment tests how quiet the equipment is inside a submarine’s hull. It’s called an Intermediate Scale Measurement System (ISMS). The testing area is a large array of underwater hydrophones that researchers lower so they test the technology inside a submarine.

Griffitts said.

“We need to make sure that our models are quieter than what we measure. LSV-2 is the Navy’s quietest sub,”

LSV-2, a scaled Virginia class submarine model, has 3,000 shaft hp and runs off batteries. Being autonomous, it also takes recovery action if something doesn’t work properly. There are transducers at the bottom of the lake, which act like underwater speakers and record data. If anything needs modification, the structure can be altered. “That’s what makes a large scale model so effective. To be able to affordably modify and test those modifications,” Griffitts said. “The Navy’s made a significant investment, with

testing accomplished at the ARD leading to a significant reduction of total submarine costs by up to $500 million each.” Another type of submarine tested is a buoyant vehicle called, the Dolly Varden. Researchers tow the vehicle under and release it to the surface to measure its noise. “We grab it by the tail, pull it to the bottom of the lake and release it. As it’s flying through the water, we can measure how much noise it makes. It’s a quiet, inexpensive platform,” he said. A third model is the Sea Jet, which is a manned surface ship demonstrator. It’s a diesel electric surface ship utilized to test surface ship propulsion systems. It has the capability to operate on battery power and makes very little engine noise. It is also used to take acoustic measurements. Finally, there is the LSV-1, the Kokanee (a Seawolf class ship), which is LSV-2’s predecessor. It was tested at the facility from 1987 to 2005 and decommissioned when LSV-2 was introduced as the more modern platform. While the research done at Bayview is in the name of U.S. defense, more directly, it is to protect the sailors on those ships from an enemy. In a Navy YouTube video, Griffitts said, “(We) help provide the Navy the quietest submarine platform they can afford so that sailors can go do their job safely and effectively and return safe to their families.”

Tips to Keep You Healthy

Celebrate You! AS WE AGE, REMEMBER THAT BEAUTY AND LOVE ARE AGELESS.

BY TERESA PESCE.

This column is dedicated to the middle-aged among us, lost in society’s Bermuda Triangle between being young and being “older,” acknowledged only by ads selling them cosmetics to make them look young again and comfort bras to ease the inevitable triumph of gravity. Honestly, when all the physical changes of middle age first appeared, sometimes I just wanted to disappear. Unfortunately, I got my wish! The midlife years usher in another phenomenon for women: the disappearance factor, famously noted in Gail Sheehy’s classic book, “New Passages.” Women find that one day, men don’t see them anymore. As female pheromones fade, women fade from testosterone’s radar. On a subliminal level, the male person “detects,” if you will, the presence of pheromones and responds accordingly. When pheromones are absent, so is the male

response to the presence of a woman. It’s as if we are suddenly camouflaged to blend into our surroundings. We become chameleons. Men just stop seeing us! Now I know there are some phenomenal middle-aged females out there who still stop traffic without the benefit of a crossing guard sign. But most of us begin to experience the alarming lack of male reaction some time in our 40s to 50s. Men who once rushed over to chat us up, to offer assistance behind counters and at the automotive repair shop, all seem to look through and past us. I was once pursued to the grocery store

79

parking lot by a check-out girl, who begged for my phone number on behalf of one of her shy male associates who moved mountains to be at the cash register when I checked out but couldn’t work up the nerve to talk to me. In my new invisible state, I noticed that male checkers no longer even twinkled at me, and, in fact, never made eye contact even when handing me the receipt. I further found that when men were forced to “see” me, it annoyed them. I would ask a male sales associate where an item was, and his eyes would focus on me only reluctantly and his reply would be without a smile. Whereas there used to be a tussle at the car repair shop over which mechanic would get to walk up and greet me, now they stonewalled until one resignedly removed his gloves, plodded up to me as if he was walking the last mile on death row and asked in a resigned monotone, “Can I help you?” On more than one occasion of invisibility, I’ve had the urge to rip open my blouse and bellow, “HELLO!” and see if THAT gets a reaction. But I fear it would only get a restraining order.

her.” Fey said that if a “non-doable” woman even talks to a man, his disinterested, bored, annoyed reaction clearly states his bafflement. “Why are this woman’s lips still moving? Why is she still talking to me?” Fey concluded that men subconsciously see no point in interacting with a woman they don’t want to have sex with. Of course, she dwells in the hard world of entertainment where even the greatest actresses experience a drop in project offers after their 40th birthday.

Comedian Tina Fey took observations of the annoyance reaction a step further. She noted that in casting meetings of sitcoms, the men in the room were quite frank and would veto casting an actress (or fire her if she had been on the show for a while) if they “didn’t want to (have sex with) her.” The bracketed words replace a very bad verb. Their decision had nothing to do with the actress’s talent. “Yeah, she’s good but I don’t want to (have sex with)

Teresa Pesce is a freelance writer and an ally in the quest to be agelessly wonderful in life!

But still — it does seem that once the pheromones cease to emanate seductively from our skin and hair, men are hardwired to no longer see the point in talking to us, much less listening to us, or stopping for us if our car is in flames by the roadside, or resuscitating us if we keel over in front of them.

Did You Know? Youth is not ageless. Beauty is. And so is love.

BELOW Celebrate your feminity every day.

However, all the women I know who have progressed from girl to goddess celebrate their femininity every day of their lives. They live with grace, glamour and freedom. Youth is not ageless. Beauty is. And so is love.

I know there are some phenomenal middle-aged females out there who still stop traffic without the benefit of a crossing guard sign.

RIGHT Create your happiness instead of relying on those around you.

Rockin’ and Rollin’ TAKE CARE OF YOUR FEET AND THEY’LL TAKE CARE OF YOU!

BY CHRISTINA M. RUST, DPT, CORNERSTONE PHYSICAL THERAPY. If you’re walking correctly, chances are your feet are “rockin’ and rollin’” the right way. The human foot and ankle is a strong and complex mechanical structure containing 26 bones, 33 joints — 20 of which are actively articulated — and more than a hundred muscles, tendons and ligaments. Our feet are designed to absorb and distribute the ground reaction forces that occur when our toes hit the ground, whether we are walking, running, hiking or dancing. Normally, during the stance phase of gait, our heel strikes the ground first, we transfer our body weight forward onto the ball of the foot and then push off on the big toe to propel us forward to the next step. In addition to this rocking motion, the foot is also designed to roll approximately six to eight degrees laterally. The arches are built at an angle to encourage a normal medial to lateral rolling motion. All that rockin’ and rollin’ literally saves our feet from the pounding they experience throughout the day.

per second. This is 20 times faster than the human eye. With amazing speed and accuracy, the computer can pinpoint exact abnormalities in movement that may occur with each step we take. In addition, the module that forms the base of a custom orthotic can now be fabricated out of many different types of materials, including carbon fiber. The combination of computerized technology and highly advanced materials creates the most customized orthotic on the market — not only for the individual but also for the specific activity. That means you can get an orthotic designed for walking, hiking, golfing, skiing, soccer, football and more. If you are having any foot or ankle pain, knee pain, hip or back problems, it could all be because your feet aren’t rocking and rolling correctly. Take care of your feet and they will take care of you!

On the opposite end of the spectrum is the foot structure known as pes cavus, or high arches. This type of foot is rigid and does not absorb ground reaction forces well. Folks with high arches tend toward developing foot pain, bunions, achilles tendonitis and plantar fasciitis. A trained specialist, such as a physical therapist or orthotist, can identify kinetic and biomechanical problems with gait. The specialist first watches the way you walk, looking for movement abnormalities or painful compensatory patterns. A physical examination of the entire body, including postural alignment, usually follows. Specific testing of the mobility in the joints of the feet and toes with palpation of painful areas, calluses or corns is also included. Observation, clinical diagnosis and casting or molding of the foot anatomy used to be how a foot care professional determined if orthotics were necessary.

MicroManaging Your Health DISCOVER WHAT SUPPLEMENTS ARE RIGHT FOR YOU.

We all know that calcium builds strong bones and vitamin C gives our immune system a boost, but what do choline, zinc or biotin do? If you have written them off as extras, don’t! Every micronutrient plays an essential role to our health; in fact, without them, we would cease to exist! All nutrients work together in an intricate, complex web of reactions to maintain daily function, and when this homeostatic system becomes unbalanced, nutrient deficiencies arise. Did you know that over 90 percent of the population is deficient in one or more micronutrients, 50 percent of whom are taking supplements!

BY DARCI BARMAN, MSN, RDN, LD, PILGRIM’S WELLNESS CLINIC.

How do our micronutrients become unbalanced? The answer to that question is quite easy. We eat foods void of nutrients. In fact, they deplete the few nutrients we store in our bodies (can you say sugar?). We take prescription medications and don’t breathe nearly enough fresh-air. We live in a fast-paced society, and daily stress pulls nutrients from our body, especially B-vitamins and antioxidants, weakening our immune system and leaving us susceptible to disease. Air, water and radiological pollution bears extra stress on our bodies and demands an even stronger detoxification system from our livers. Prescription medications interfere with the absorption and function of many micronutrients; for example antacids, such as omeprazole, are known to cause

deficiencies in B12, folic acid, vitamin D, calcium, iron and zinc. Popular cholesterol-lowering drugs, like statins, deplete our muscular stores of co-enzyme Q10. Oral contraceptives, commonly known as “the pill,” can cause deficiencies in vitamin B1, B2, B6, B12, magnesium, selenium, zinc and folic acid. The very foundation of our food system, the soil, is over-worked and depleted of vital nutrients such as selenium, copper, zinc and iodine, and therefore our food supply provides less of those essential trace minerals. And the story isn’t just one way — a lack of sleep or chronic fatigue may contribute to nutrient deficiencies, but nutrient deficiencies may result in fatigue and insomnia. What came first, the deficiency or the symptom — the chicken or the egg? So why not just take a broad-spectrum multivitamin that provides 100 percent of the daily value of all micronutrients? That is certainly a good place to start, but most people, depending on their lifestyle, diet and overall stress level, may need more or less of certain nutrients to meet their individual needs. We are all biochemically individual— not one of us functions in the exact same way as another, and because of the complex nature in which micronutrients interact, supplementing with too much of one micronutrient could drive a deficiency in another, or worse,

serious health risks. For example, oversupplementing zinc without adequate copper could drive a copper deficiency. Or, post-menopausal women attempting to reduce risk for osteoporosis often supplement calcium, but calcium without adequate cofactors like vitamin D, vitamin K2, magnesium and boron, could be driving soft-tissue calcification (stiffening and narrowing of your arteries due to calcium build-up), increasing cardiovascular health risks instead. What can you do? Find a credentialed health care provider that can test you for micronutrient deficiencies. Often dietitians, naturopaths, chiropractor or other alternative practitioners can help. Don’t keep guessing what supplements are right for you. Test for what you need and leave the rest!

The Best Local Eats

Grilling Time WHAT TO PAIR WITH YOUR FAVORITE CUTS OF MEAT.

BY COLIN ANDERSON.

While the die-hards will tell you that there is never an end to grilling season, now is the time when most of us amateurs fire back up our favorite summer cooking device, the barbecue grill. If your grill sat around uncovered all winter and spring, it’s best to take a few minutes to look it over before firing it back up. And when you are ready to go, remember that whether you’re making a meal for two or 20, having the right beverage pairing can make the difference between an OK and a fantastic meal. Perhaps you have a favorite go-to light beer or red blend that you drink each time you grill. This summer, why not try out the amazing amount of craft beer and artisan wines our region has to offer? “If you’re cooking a nice cut of meat, you truly want to complement it with the right drink,” said Brad Gunn, owner of Culinary Stone in Coeur d’Alene. “You can spend a hundred bucks on a great bottle of chardonnay, but if you pair it with the wrong meat, both the wine and the entrée are going to come out not tasting their best.” Here are a couple of easy tips to remember when picking the proper beverage to go with your meat.

LIVINGLOCAL

WWW.SANDPOINTLIVING.COM MAY 2015

Red Meat = Red Wine “Steaks pair great with a nice cab, syrah or merlot, each of these wines really enhance the flavors of the meat,” said Gunn. Look for something a bit drier since a sweet wine brings out odd flavors with the smokiness of a steak. If you prefer beer, again go with something darker like a stout or porter. Big Sky Moose Drool Brown Ale is perfect for those who aren’t too fond of heavier beers. Brats & Sausages Beer is your best bet here and look for something with a bit of hops — especially if there is any spice to the brat. India Pale Ales, American Pale Ales or, if you prefer malty, an Amber Ale all go great with this summertime staple. Chicken, Fish or Shrimp Lighter fare calls for lighter beverages. Try chardonnay or pinot gris on the wine side — pilsners, wits or blondes if you prefer beer. “If you’re cooking for guests, have a variety of choices and remember people tend to go lighter in the summer,” said Gunn. With so many choices it can be intimidating, but don’t be afraid to ask for help from local experts.

topping off your whole grain cereal with some fresh strawberries. It’s a great way to start your day! Scan our QR Code below to go straight to our recipe online!

A fresh salad does not have to be simply a starter to a great meal — it can be the meal. With so many fresh vegetables to choose from, it can be filling and satisfying. Add some protein to your salad in the way of chicken, steak or salmon to make sure you are receiving a balanced meal. Looking for a healthy snack? Certain fruits allow conscientious eaters to fill up without filling out. For example, watermelon is 92 percent water — so it’s hydrating and satiating without the disadvantage of fat or cholesterol. Glamping Adventure Get close to nature at Huckleberry Tent and Breakfast. Article and photos by Jessica Herbig. They have huckleberries. They also have tents. Cozy, canvas-walled tents with wood stoves, planked wood floors, screens to keep the bugs out, feather (yes, feather) filled mattress toppers on their queen size beds, campfire sites, extra tent pads, permanent camping kitchens at every site and quaint outhouses. Yep, you read that right. You can’t glamp without an outhouse. You’ll get bragging rights for using the outdoor showers. They’re a thing of beauty. Timothy and Christine Dick, owners of Huckleberry Tent and Breakfast, live an alternative energy lifestyle six miles east of the small town of Clark Fork, Idaho. They live completely off the grid, growing as much of their own food as possible, storing food for winter months and raising and butchering their own meat. The garden produce is available for campers to sample during their stay. They enjoy the fruits of their labor on their land and want to share their lifestyle with those interested, to show everyone it is possible to live, comfortably, I might add, without traditional electricity. Their solar system was purchased a short distance away in Sandpoint, and as you drive up to their main house, you can see the solar panels on the roof of the house and nearby shed. They’re more than happy to invite you into their home to see the battery bank and electrical system housed under the stairs.

They don’t do without modern conveniences. They have Internet, and maintain a website for their Tent and Breakfast. Just go to www.huckleberrytentandbreakfast.com to check it out. They regularly update their Facebook page with camping conditions and the latest fruits of their labor. They liken it to a modern-day Little House on the Prairie. Not wanting to sacrifice their simple lifestyle led them on their Tent and Breakfast adventure. Christine Dick explained how their business came about as we meandered down the groomed trails to the three tent sites. They are passionate about sharing with visitors why they live they way they do. They bought bare land and began building in 1992, literally bushwhacking a clearing for what would later be their beautiful, landscaped front yard and impressive garden area where you will enjoy your breakfasts as you camp with them. The tent sites themselves are hand-crafted with care by the couple. They are open as soon as the snow melts and stay open into the fall. Next to every tent is an old-fashioned camp kitchen, with everything you need to cook for yourself. There is even a system to heat water for the outdoor shower. From here, you can hike, plan a canoe or kayak trip off-site on the Clark Fork River or Lake Pend Oreille, or just meander through the forest at will, picking wild berries and enjoying some of the most beautiful parts of North
