FALLISHERE

www.SandpointLiving.com

The kids have returned to school, the weekends are filled with soccer and football, and the crisp feeling of fall is in the air. Looking back it was a fun-filled summer with the Festival at Sandpoint, days at City Beach, and weather that was spectacular. It also seems as though the secret of our beautiful Sandpoint is truly no longer a secret. Particularly during the month of August it seemed that the streets were more crowded with tourists than ever before. It is refreshing to see the economy coming back to life! As we head into the holiday season (yes, it really is right around the corner), it is important to remember what makes this community great. It is the people, businesses and organizations that call Sandpoint home. I encourage you all to do what you can to support those shops, restaurants, and various businesses that are located right here in Sandpoint. After all, as we saw during the summer months, people come from miles just to enjoy what we have each and every day. At Sandpoint Living, we are here to help this community share all the great events and news that is happening among our friends, neighbors, family and colleagues. We encourage you to contact us with your good news stories, notices of your events or activities and of the great things happening in our schools. I thank you for the opportunity to share all with you all the wonderful stories that make Sandpoint truly unique. I hope you will continue to enjoy what we at Sandpoint Living feel is the go to publication for all that is Sandpoint.

sprain to the lateral aspect of the ankle is a common injury. It can happen during a rigorous sporting event or when walking on uneven terrain. This injury can be very painful and activity will be limited for a couple of weeks. However, if a sprain does not fully recover, it could lead to recurrent injuries well after the first incident. When lateral ankle inversion occurs, ligaments can stretch or tear as the bottom of the foot moves inward. These ligaments that provide mobility and support to the ankle become weakened and lack proper functionality. To reduce pain and swelling for a sprain, the typical treatment consists of ice, rest, and NSAIDs (Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs). Although this will lessen swelling and discoloration, ligaments in the foot may still be damaged. Without proper rehabilitation, the ankle will remain unstable. The ankle is more susceptible to injury because the ligaments did not fully recover and cannot support normal balance and mobility. Recurring injuries or sprains can easily occur if the ankle is over-exerted without proper recovery and support. This may prolong recovery time and increase the potential for further injury. In order to avoid long-term ankle instability, stretched or torn ligaments must undergo exercising and re-strengthening. “Ankle instability from injuries requires proper therapy to strengthen the affected ligaments and muscles. Bracing should be used during activity to reduce the probability of a recurrence,” said Richard Call, Certified Pedorthist and Footmaxx Clinical Consultant. Depending on the severity of the sprain and the activity level of the patient, recovery will vary for patients. During the recovery period, protection must be applied to the ankle to inhibit further injury. There are a number of ways to protect a fragile ankle without breaking the bank. Custom foot orthotics can be used to prevent ankle sprains and control repeated injury caused by lateral ankle instability. Orthotics

Your Goals Are Our Priority! provide balance and enhance support during normal gait. To help instability, orthotics with a heel cup device and postings give added support to weak ligaments. A deep heel cup will embed the calcaneus and protect it from movement. Postings raise the side in which the ankle is subject to roll, providing it with added support. Properly fitted shoes are also critical for recovery because they provide protection and support for the ankles. Shoes that offer a properly fit depth with a snug fitting counter, control the ankle from abnormal movement. Appropriate shoes can also be used to inhibit any preliminary sprains. Semi-rigid orthotics combined with a pair of properly fitted shoes will keep the ankles protected from inversion/eversion of the ankle. For more serious ankle sprains, Ankle Foot Orthoses (AFO) and braces are used to restrict movement and protect damaged ligaments in the ankle. These can also be used for highly active athletes. Keeping the ankle from moving abnormally during intense sports is important to reduce recurrent injury. As fall sets in and winter quickly approaches, be aware that the weather changes will provide an environment which will allow more foot and ankle injuries. Wearing orthotics with properly fitted shoes will give you balance and support for daily activities. Recovering from an ankle sprain would be a painful way for anyone to spend part of the winter.

When C o l l e n e McCracken left her home in Laclede on a snowy December morning in 2011, her mom warned her to drive to school slowly due to the fresh snow on the ground. Collene had just transferred from Priest River to Sandpoint High School to take advantage of their Certified Nursing Assistant program. Carol McCracken left shortly after her daughter to travel to her job at Starbucks in Ponderay. Soon the traffic began to slow. An accident, she thought. “I hoped Collene had made it past the accident so she would not be late for school,” said Carol. “And then I thought to myself what if it was her?” As she came closer to the scene of the accident, her heart stopped. Her worst fear had come true. Her daughter’s car had collided with an oncoming vehicle. Carol quickly ran to the scene and asked the man who had been in the other vehicle if he was okay. He was uninjured. Frightened, she could not get close to her daughter as the first responders were surrounding her and doing what they could to save her life. “I yelled to the paramedics and asked if she was alive,” said Carol. “She didn’t look alive.” But she knew to trust the paramedics and EMTs to do their job, and she did hers. She began to pray. “I prayed for wisdom for them (the first responders),” said Carol who asked God to please save her daughter’s life. Collene’s dad Mark arrived at the accident scene just as his daughter was being loaded into the ambulance. After arriving at Bonner General Hospital, Collene was transported to Sacred Heart in Spokane via helicopter. The prognosis was grim. She had broken her pelvis in five places, as well as her neck and had a broken arm. But it was the traumatic brain injury and injuries to her vertebrae that were the most frightening. “The specialists told us she would be a vegetable the rest of her life,” said Carol. There were spots on her brain that showed up on her scans and that, the doctors said, were an indication that she would never wake up from her coma.

But Carol refused to believe it. Family and friends circled Collene’s bed and prayed for a miracle. And that is exactly what they witnessed. “We had a huge prayer chain and faith contingent praying for Collene 24/7,” said Pastor Chris Bassett of Hidden Valley Worship Center of the approximately 80 people on the prayer chain. It was three days later when Collene woke up. Her family asked her to give them a sign that she was okay. Collene gave them a thumbs up. Bob Abbott, the public information officer for Bonner County EMS, said that he and his staff were happy to learn of C o l l e n e ’s progress. Bob had made the connection while stopping at Starbucks and visiting with Carol one day. “This one (rescue and recovery) was pretty remarkable,” said Abbott, who adds that frequently in the winter months the helicopters are unable to transport due to weather, but this time everything worked out perfectly. “There are so many things that can go wrong, but she not only survived, she thrived.” He said that there are not always happy endings and he attributes Collene’s recovery to her strength and determination as well as the wonderful support system she has with her family and friends. Abbott said that while the EMS was a critical piece to the puzzle, they were only one piece. “All the stars lined up,” he said. Some short-term memory loss is one of only a few indications of the trauma Collene suffered. As for her memory of the accident, she recalls looking down on the accident scene from above. An experience many that are brought back to life report. “It felt like I was in a dream,” said Collene who adds that she does believe she had died and was resuscitated.

During her recovery Collene had support from many. One in particular was her friend Bobby Clark, the Priest River football player who had been severely injured in a football game earlier that year. He was still recovering at St. Lukes Rehabilitation Institute when Collene arrived. They encouraged and supported one another. “They took their first steps in their walkers together,” said Carol. “Bobby was so supportive through everything and he was so much worse than I was,” adds Collene. As for the EMTs, they communicated through Facebook and, in a moving tribute, they attended Collene’s high school graduation party. “That was the first time I saw all three of them together,” said Collene. “It was a miracle.” Carol struggled with what to do to honor the miracle of her daughter’s survival and those who were an important part of that. She decided on placing a star on the side of the road at the spot where her daughter’s accident occurred. She said that there are many crosses to honor those who have passed away, but Carol thinks it is also important to honor the living and acknowledge those miracles that happen.

The star, which is located at about milepost 19 and can be seen as you travel towards Sandpoint, says “Faith, Family and Friends. A Miracle Happened at Johnson Creek – Collene lived.” It also has Collene’s favorite Bible verse. Many people, including the EMTs, signed the star that now stands as a tribute to those first responders who helped save her daughter’s life.

While Collene was always interested in becoming a Certified Nurses Assistant, this experience inspired her even more. She has her CNA and is working with brain trauma patients at Valley Vista Care Center in Sandpoint. “I hope to start nursing school in the fall depending on how my memory issues are,” said Collene who adds that her shortterm memory is improving each day.

In addition to her friend Bobby Clark, Collene said she would not be where she is today if it were not for her boyfriend Blake Davis who has been by her side constantly and is very patient while she struggles with her memory. She credits her family as well with providing her with the support and strength to get better. According to Carol, Collene’s sister Kylah was a huge help keeping track of medical appointments and therapy sessions and so much more. The family is also grateful for the many donations that people made to help with the medical bills. Collene was determined to not let this accident keep her from graduating on time. She studied at home, using one arm to type her homework, and graduated with her class in June 2012. She and Bobby also attended the Priest River prom together. Carol said it is important for people to realize that even in the time of crisis, do your best to

living

Physical, Occupational, Speech and Aquatic Therapy Specialized Behavior Care Programs keep your head together and listen to those who are doing their job. As for Collene, she said she has learned that God performs miracles in many ways and it is important for one to realize that they should be as positive as they can. “You cannot always change what is happening in your life,” said Collene. “Give all your strength to God.”

SPOTLIGHT Six Star Automotive By Patty Hutchens It was just over a year ago when Chris Cook purchased Six Star Automotive in Sandpoint. But it took little time for he and his staff to build a superior reputation in the automotive service community. Voted one of Bonner County’s best earlier this year, Chris and his staff perform all types of service on domestic cars, Asian imports and light trucks. Included in that are oil changes, air conditioning maintenance and repair, brake work, timing belts, tune-ups, check engine light diagnosis and diagnostics in general. “We also strongly encourage preventative maintenance and making sure our customers’ vehicles are regularly serviced,” said Cook. However Six Star Automotive provides much more than automotive service. They also are a Thule dealer selling roof racks, bicycle racks and more for all types of vehicles. In addition they are a Napa Auto Care Center. “Because we are a Napa Auto Care Center we are able to offer a nationwide 2 year, 24,000 mile warranty on all parts and labor,” said Cook who adds that they place an emphasis on using quality parts. Prior to purchasing Six Star, Chris worked as the service manager for May’s Honda and also worked with two different local automotive management consulting firms. He and his family moved to the area in 2005 in search of a better quality of life than that which they left in California. He visited Selle Valley Construction owners Scott and Barbara Schreiber, friends he knew from their time in California, in May 2005 and knew Sandpoint was where he wanted to settle. He sold his house, sold his business - an automotive shop nearly three

times the size of Six Star- and moved to Sandpoint two months later. He has two sons, Christian who is a senior at Sandpoint High School and works part time at Six Star, and Zac who is a full time employee at Six Star. He also employs two service technicians who had been at Six Star Automotive under the previous owner and added an additional technician this year. Chris, who has a degree in Automotive Management, takes pride in the superior customer service he and his staff provide. While they work on most makes and models, they have specific technical expertise in Subaru, Toyota and Lexus vehicles. One service they provide that many customers take advantage of is pre-purchase inspections of used vehicles. According to Cook, spending a little bit of money for a thorough inspection prior to purchasing a used vehicle helps provide customers with the peace of mind they need. Unlike many places, Six Star also offers the convenience of booking appointments online. Simply visit www.sixstarautomotive.com. As an additional service to its customers, Six Star Automotive provides free local transportation to your home or work. Six Star Automotive is a member of the Better Business Bureau with a 100% rating, Automotive Service Association, and the Automotive Society of Excellence.

ootball season is here, and baseball playoffs are just around the corner, which means it is also time to get your entertainment area in shape for family and guests. Whether your TV is in your family room or a dedicated media room, it takes more than just a big screen to get the most enjoyment out of your viewing experience. According to the American Lighting Association (ALA), good lighting can significantly enhance movies and sports watching, while poor lighting can be a distraction to relaxing family time. To make sure your media room has good lighting, the ALA offers these easy-to-do tips: •

16   Sandpoint Living Local | www.sandpointliving.com

Consider reflection. If you’ve got a big TV, you’ve got a big surface that acts as a reflector. A bigger screen equals more bounce, particularly with overhead light sources. Focus on ambient light more than direct light. A large source of overhead light will cause more glare, which is why ambient or task light -- side lights, sconces -- should be a big focus. Diffuse the light with more light on the walls than on the ceiling.

Dim it. Most people turn the lights off when watching a movie. You need some lighting to create a balance, so the TV is not the single glowing source.

Light the room in layers. To be properly lit, rooms should have three layers -overhead, task and ambient. This allows you to have the exact mix of light that works for a particular time, day and need.

Reduce glare when you can. As much as possible, reduce the amount of natural light with window treatments, and allow artificial light sources to supplement as needed.

Most importantly, whatever your style, there are beautiful decorative lights that can complement the décor and, in the long run, are as important to comfort as a cushy sectional sofa. Visit your local ALA-member retail showroom to see the newest products and to talk to an expert about media room lighting that is most appropriate and energy efficient for your space. To find your closest ALA-member lighting showroom, visit www.americanlightingassoc.com.

Three Amigos Plumbing By Patty Hutchens

Have you ever experienced a burst pipe in the middle of the night? Or how about a backed up sewer that is likely only to occur on a Saturday? It always seems that things like this happen during the time when the professionals are unavailable. But if you are looking for quality plumbing services any time night or day, then you are in luck. Three Amigos Plumbing & Maintenance provides emergency service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, something that is hard to come by in a larger city, much less a small town. Purchased by Todd Janssen in 2006, Three Amigos has thrived in what has otherwise been a down economy. Janssen credits that in part to their dedication to using high-end equipment as well as his quality staff. Whether performing water line or sewer line replacements, it is all done trenchless. “We have a directional drill so we do water line and sump pump lines without digging up your yard,” said Janssen. While about 80% of the work they perform is done commercial, including providing the plumbing maintenance for Bonner General Hospital and working with Northland Cable and Avista, Janssen said they welcome all jobs no matter how small. Janssen had worked at Three Amigos for five years prior to purchasing it. He has expanded considerably from the original six employees

1424 North Boyer, Suite C-106-1A Sandpoint, Idaho 83864 208.255.4380

to now having ten. He also has a fleet of eight service trucks. All of his employees are journeymen or apprentices and all are licensed. In addition to having their HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) license, Three Amigos also has it Public Works license. “All our employees are highly qualified,” said Janssen who adds that they service all of Bonner and Boundary counties. In February of this year Three Amigos moved from its location on Michigan Street to Boyer Avenue right behind the Panhandle Special Needs, a move precipitated by the need for expansion. Prior to coming to Sandpoint in 1997, Janssen was stationed in Mississippi where he was a Seabee, a member of the United States Navy Construction Battalion. “That is where I got most of my experience,” said Janssen. Originally from Libby, MT Todd had a desire to return to the area and that is when he decided to make Sandpoint his home. Three Amigos is an integral part of the community, donating its services to important places such as Kinderhaven and Head Start’s Sandpoint center as well as donating to the Sandpoint Lions Club. In being true to their belief that the community and the loyal clients are what make them successful, Janssen said Three Amigos does all it can to support the local businesses. “With the exception of some of the parts we buy that are not available here, we are 100 percent local. We buy our smaller parts at Sandpoint Super Drug or Merwins,” said Janssen. “We definitely believe in supporting the small town.” For more information, go to www.threeamigosplumbing.com or call them at 208.255.4380.

This might not always be the scenario, but businesses of all types and sizes now have the opportunity to reach their customers in a more effective and cost-efficient digital way. CashOff.com is a new company that makes it easy for companies to “Do It Yourself ” and create coupons within minutes. Instantly, companies can edit coupons and have them available for customers through multiple media platforms. CashOff.com brings that digital power to companies -- big or small. With Groupon and other large coupon companies, they often take up to 50 percent of the revenue of each deal offered. That’s why smaller companies often cannot afford to work with larger coupon companies and end up losing their customers to bigger businesses.

With CashOff.com, it costs as little as $10 a month, and they take zero percent of the revenue. Now, the playing field has been leveled, and all companies, big or small, can take advantage of CashOff. As our world is going paperless, we’re still looking for a great deal. People everywhere are now able to access their coupons while they are at the store or in a restaurant. To keep up with this ever-growing media world, digital coupons must be accessible to the public through Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other social media platforms. CashOff. com allows coupons to be at customers’ fingertips instantly through CashOff ’s multiple media platforms. As businesses change, deals and giveaways will change as well. With CashOff.com’s web-based coupon system, merchants can continuously update their coupons to match customers’ expectations at any specific time or place. CashOff.com allows businesses to remove the middle man and create coupons by themselves -- instantly. Time is money, and this simple coupon system can save time and build revenue. Company discounts, coupons and sales will be at digital fingertips through multiple social media sites reaching millions of potential customers.

n its home stretch of its two year anniversary, Kokanee Coffee has gone far from unnoticed. Nestled perfectly at the corner of Fifth and Alder, this is a “park and enter” type of coffee establishment. With the close sense of community and the loud, boisterous customers, Jim and Angela Reese have stepped up to answer the call from Sandpoint residents for a home away from home. Everything in Kokanee is part ingenious epiphany, part product and part hard work. From Jim’s handcrafted metal works, to the 5 varieties of micro-roasted coffee beans, to the delicious goodies and wholesome meals Angela and her girls create. A newer staple on the Kokanee menu is the presence of food. Good food. The breakfast menu boasts egg scrambles and delicious homemade croissant sandwiches. If by chance you aren’t beginning your day at Kokanee Coffee, come back for lunch, which is always a scratch-made soup or wrap. The breakfast and lunch menus don’t change much, but why change something that needn’t be? If you find yourself with a hankering for something sweet, homemade cookies, scones and biscotti come fresh out of the oven at all operating hours. It’s the good things in life that we tend to look forward to sticking around, and the Reese’s have made it a point to keep their menu consistent, ridiculously delicious, and reliably unchanging. In a small town where it has proven to be at times difficult to get a start, the question arises of how it is that Kokanee Coffee keeps its chairs full and entrance door constantly swinging. The answer for this home away from home coffee shop is that The Big Guy Upstairs called Jim and Angela to drop everything and open shop. There hangs a sign

open daily live entertainment fridays & saturdays from 7pm on the cafe wall that says, “Home is where we park it”, and it’s no joke for the owners of Kokanee Coffee. They sold everything and started a newfound passion. This couple is beautifully graced with what some like to call “a servant’s heart.” It is this servant’s attitude that keeps customers lingering all day long. Why leave a place where you’re served fantastic coffee, food and given immediate friendship? Kokanee employees love to serve others. Sandpoint residents know a good thing when they see it, and Kokanee has a lot of good things to offer. Walking through the doors of Kokanee Coffee, you’re sure to be exposed to a variety of comforts. You are guaranteed to be exposed to one of the best cups of coffee that Sandpoint has to offer. You’re guaranteed to be exposed to the amazing aroma (and taste, if you so choose) of homemade goodness. You are absolutely guaranteed to be exposed to someone with a servant’s heart, who is ready to bless you in any way they can. And Kokanee Coffee is the place to be exposed to some of the best of Sandpoint. Check out Kokanee Coffee at kokaneecoffee.com and like them on Facebook!

hey are the three words that can turn a person’s world upside down in an instant. You have cancer. Hearing that diagnosis can dramatically change the life of a patient and those whom they love. For one Sandpoint resident, hearing those words set her into action to begin the fight that all too many people have had to face. But she was not just fighting her battle, she fought for others who faced the same diagnosis. She went to work directing her energy towards battling her disease and also unselfishly making the journey easier for those who came after her. After living with cancer for eight years, Heather Gibson died in 2006 but not before she made a significant impact on the cancer community throughout North Idaho. At the time of her diagnosis there were no options for treatment in her hometown of Sandpoint. It meant traveling to Coeur d’Alene or Spokane for medical appointments, chemotherapy and radiation. Travel was not only a burden to many in Sandpoint and points north due to one’s physical health, but also due to time and money. Gibson joined forces with Dr. Alan Grosset of what was then North Idaho Cancer Center and together they helped make a clinic in Sandpoint a reality. Today that satellite clinic is open 3 days a week and allows many patients to receive their chemotherapy treatments without traveling all the way to Coeur d’Alene. But Gibson knew she wanted to do more to help those with cancer. With her infectious spirit, she gathered her friends who helped bring her vision of a community resource center to reality. This month marks the 10-year anniversary of Sandpoint’s Community Cancer Services (CCS), the location of which is also called Heather’s House in memory of its founder. Since establishing a database of its clients in 2007, Executive Director Jessica Martin said CCS has assisted 672 clients. Today they have an astounding 250 active clients seeking its services. Unlike many agencies, Community Cancer Services does not determine eligibility for its services based on a client’s income. After all, anyone who has dealt with the disease knows a financial situation can dramatically change from one day to the next whether it is due to the inability to work, excessive medical bills, or a caregiver needing to take additional time off. The services provided by CCS are many and are driven by each client’s need. They include gas vouchers to assist with travel to and from medical appointments, chemotherapy or radiation; yoga classes for cancer patients;

grocery cards; prescription assistance for medications at local pharmacies; a Look Good Feel Better program taught by a licensed aesthetician to assist women with cancer; volunteer drivers to assist with transportation; a lending library on cancer related material as well as internet access for computer research; a boutique full of caps, scarves, wigs and post-mastectomy products and so much more. Another valuable service provided by Community Cancer Services is their licensed social worker, Bambi Lassen. In her role she has been a comfort to many, including the families and caregivers of the patients. At Community Cancer Services there are support groups for patients, caregivers and children and also one on one counseling is available at no charge.

paperwork. One of her roles as a social worker is to help patients find those resources that will fulfill their specific needs. McElfresh works in the Coeur d’Alene clinic and stresses that patients should make a point to set a time to meet with a social worker at any of their clinics which are located in Coeur d’Alene, Sandpoint and Post Falls. “It’s important for patients to talk to their social worker about their needs,” said McElfresh, who adds that some may be reluctant to do so. And while some may in fact not need the services, she wants patients to know what is available. “The services and support we provide cover a broad area.”

But perhaps one of the most valuable services provided by CCS and other similar organizations does not come in the form of financial assistance. It is the feeling those with cancer gain in knowing that they are not alone.

By virtue of every clinic having a social worker, each patient does as well. The social worker provides information on services available and support for the client. He or she will also help facilitate communication with agencies, either national or local, who can help the patient with services such as those provided at Sandpoint’s Community Cancer Services.

According to Maggi McElfresh, a licensed clinical social worker at Kootenai Clinic Cancer Services, previously known as Kootenai Cancer Center, there are many places where patients can receive the help they need – whether it’s financial assistance or as simple as assistance with completing

One other source for people in North Idaho is in Shoshone County at the Shoshone Cancer Resource Center, a group very similar to that of CCS. “These are two fabulous organizations,” said McElfresh who adds there are a number of foundations across the country that also provide assistance.

The Shoshone Cancer Resource Center is in its sixth year in the valley and was started by volunteers who saw a need to help cancer patients with their financial and emotional needs. The services the center provides are similar to that of Community Cancer Services in Sandpoint including transportation costs, overnight stays and providing a driver to help transport patients to and from their appointments. In Coeur d’Alene the Kootenai Health Foundation Cancer Patient Support Foundation is also able to help qualifying clients with many of their needs associated with a cancer diagnosis.“One hundred percent of the donations to the Kootenai Health Fund go directly to the clients,” said McElfresh. “There are no administration costs.” To learn more about or make a donation to Community Cancer Services, call 208.255.2301 or mail your tax deductible donation to CCS, 1215 Michigan Street, Suite B, Sandpoint, ID 83864. Breast Cancer Risk Factors

• Approximatley 85% of women who get breast cancer do not have a family history. However, having a first-degree relative (mother, sister, daughter) with breastcancer almost doubles the risk. • The greatest risk factors for breast cancer are being female and getting older. • Males can develop breast cancer but the risk is 100 times higher in women. • Approximately 5% to 10% of breast cancers result from inherited breast cancer genetic mutations, including BRCA1, BRCA2 and other mutations • Breast cancer incidence rates grow steadily with age. A 60 year old women’s risk of developing breast cancer is about fifteen times higher than that of a 30year old woman. • The use of combined post-menopausal hormone therapy (estrogen and progesterone) increase the risk of breast cancer. This increase can be seen with as little as two years of use. • Being overweight or obese has been found to increase breast cancer risk for women after menopause. • Evidence is growing that shows exercise reduces the risk of breast cancer.

Comprehensive Cancer Alliance for Idaho (CCAI) Strategic Plan Objectives, 2011-2015

• Reduce late stage breast cancer among women ages 40+ from 98.0 new cases per 100,000 to 88.2 new cases per 100,000 per year • Increase the proportion of women aged 40+ who have received a mammogram within the prior two years from 63.8% to 75.6%

SHS Activities Director Kris Knowles Feels Right at Home in Bulldog Red By Patty Hutchens

W

hile he may only be in his second year as the Activities Director at Sandpoint High School, Kris Knowles is no stranger to the world of Sandpoint athletics. He grew up in Coeur d’Alene and as a high school athlete he recalls times when he faced some of his current colleagues at various sporting events.

Our goal is to make “grooming” a positive experience for your pets!

In the early 1990s when Knowles was playing basketball for Coeur d’Alene, his team traveled to Sandpoint for a game. “The gymnasium was wall to wall people with Sandpoint fans,” said Knowles. “My mom had to watch the game on closed circuit TV in the (Sandpoint High School) commons.” His opponents were SHS teacher Crosby Tajan, Mike Roos and many others familiar to Sandpoint residents. “Sandpoint had an incredible basketball team,” recalls Knowles. Prior to coming to Sandpoint, Knowles spent one year at Bonners Ferry as the Activities Director and 12 years at Lake City High School where he was a history and social studies teacher as well as a coach. He coached

34   Sandpoint Living Local | www.sandpointliving.com

everything from basketball to football and softball and also served as an assistant basketball coach at North Idaho College for two years. He also coached against Sandpoint head football coach Satini Puailoa during Puailoa’s first stint at Sandpoint. “I was always acutely aware of Sandpoint athletics,” said Knowles. So when Tom Albertson took on the role of Assistant Principal at Sandpoint High School, Knowles learned that the Activities Director position was open and immediately applied. “My first thought was that I want to be part of that,” said Knowles of the Sandpoint High School community. Although sports are a huge part of Kris Knowles’ life, it is education that has always been at the forefront. His father was a teacher and a coach and his mother also a teacher. “I grew up on a field, in a gym and on a track, but education was always the primary focus,” said Knowles. With a Masters Degree in Education Administration as well as a Masters Degree in Athletic Administration, Knowles brings

a great deal to his position as Activities Director at Sandpoint High School. One of his primary missions is to instill in everyone – including students, coaches, staff and parents – the concept of “we.” “The ‘we’ is anyone who has an interest,” said Knowles. “And if we can build that, we will be unstoppable,” But when he refers to the unity he is trying to build, he is not just referring to athletics, but academics as well. He said the environment Principal Becky Meyer and Assistant Principal Tom Albertson have established is something he wishes to emulate in the sports world. Knowles explains that the coaches and leaders of the teams are not just coaching a specific sport; instead they are working to build Sandpoint athletics as a whole. “We are moving in a direction we have never been,” said Knowles, who adds that he never buys things for the coaches that are geared towards their specific sport but instead refer to Sandpoint Athletics. Another

step on the road to “we.” While the building of a strong athletic program is important, Knowles said he loves nothing more than when he sees an athlete excel in the classroom and in the community. Knowles said that being a coach and an educator gives one an opportunity to be a mentor to the younger people in the community. For Knowles, the one man he said inspired him the most was Don Haynes – the father of Sandpoint High School’s varsity basketball coach and teacher Tyler Haynes. “I am in part the person I am today because of him,” said Knowles of his one time coach at Coeur d’Alene High School. “He is not only a legend in sports, but he is a legend as a man.” Haynes taught the young athletes to be very aware of the fact they represent themselves not only in school, but in the community as well. “We were told we are a walking billboard,” said Knowles.

When Knowles coached his first home basketball game at Lake City it was against non other than Sandpoint coach and friend Tyler Haynes. With Tyler’s dad, Knowles’ mentor, in the stands, it was a special moment. Although Knowles is certain that Don Haynes was pulling for the Bulldogs. Knowles said he thinks of sports as a metaphor for life. He points out that in both sports and in the real world at one time or another you will work for someone, work with someone and be rewarded for hard work. Knowles said it is important that everyone have a positive mentor like he had, and he praises all the SHS coaches for playing the role they do in the young athletes’ lives. Whether it is sports or an after school club, Knowles believes it is extremely important to keep kids engaged. And Sandpoint High School does a tremendous job of that. In fact 90% of the students at Sandpoint High School are engaged in at least one activity, something Knowles thinks helps kids through the teenage years. What he finds most rewarding is when his

For Kris Knowles, sports is all about making connections and the relationships that are built. “And in Sandpoint we have coaches who really get (that concept),” he said. When people ask him why he chose education as his career, Knowles explains that it was always his desired profession. “It’s about giving back because I have had so many positive mentors,” he said. Knowles said that he and his wife Kelli, who is an English teacher at SHS, feel very blessed to be able to raise their 5 and 3 year old daughters in the Sandpoint community. They travel to many games together, which for Kris can sometimes be every night of the week. When Kelli and the kids cannot attend, they have mastered face time. “The kids always ask me if we are winning,” said Kris. In fact they have become so much of the Sandpoint Bulldog community that when learning their colors, the girls do not refer to red as simply that, instead they say it’s “bulldog red.” While one may view Knowles’ job as strictly to do with athletics, this simply is not the case. As the activities director he also oversees the approximately 20 clubs at Sandpoint High School. The clubs, says Knowles, are just as important as athletics because they too help keep kids engaged. “We need to make sure there are opportunities available for all kids,” said Knowles. He said both athletics and other extracurricular activities offer students an opportunity to learn how to manage their time, be involved, finish things and work for people and with people. Growing up in Coeur d’Alene, Knowles said he always recognized the tradition that is at the heart of the Sandpoint community and that is something he is honored to be a part of. “There is so much history and tradition in Sandpoint athletics, and being new here it is my responsibility to learn about it and protect that,” said Knowles. “It’s a pleasure to be here.” Kris Knowles on SHS Fall Sports While the football team struggled last year, Knowles points out that any time there is a change in leadership there is an evolution

process, and there has already been vast improvement this year. He said Head Coach Satini Puailoa is one hundred percent supportive of the “we” concept that Knowles is trying to build and that the program takes anyone who wants to play and welcomes them to be a part of it. He calls Coach Puailoa infectious and said the head varsity football coach helps build not only the students’ athletic ability but their unity as a team as well. For cross-country he said Matt and Angie Brass have been amazing as not only coaches but mentors to their team. “Everyone I know and trust in the running world say they are the best,” said Knowles who adds that the way the husband and wife coaches connect with the kids is unique. “They get the best out of the kids.” Boys’ and girls’ soccer is something that everyone in Sandpoint enjoys from the very young age to adults. “There is a great culture here in Sandpoint for soccer and both Adam (Tajan) and Connor (Baranski) are doing a great job with these soccer teams. Hopefully we can send them both off to the state tournament.” One sport that is often overlooked is swimming. While many schools have a cooperative agreement with other schools in forming a team, Sandpoint has its own team of strong athletes. Knowles said they are extremely committed, going to the pool at Sandpoint West Athletic Club before school in the mornings to practice. Another fall sport for which Knowles has high hopes is volleyball. As of this story, they have yet to lose a match. They are a lot of fun to watch and Knowles is hopeful that they will make it to the state tournament this year, which will be in Post Falls. “We hope to have a lot of people come to support them,” said Knowles.

riven. That is one word that describes senior Isaac Johnson both on and off the field. An honor role student with a 4.2 GPA, Isaac is a leader who works diligently to achieve his goals. Isaac is in his second year as the starting linebacker for the Sandpoint High School varsity football team, and he plays lacrosse in the spring where he has been on the varsity team since his sophomore year. Although he has yet to decide where he will go to college, Isaac knows that he will attend a four-year university and would like to play on a club lacrosse team. His area of interest is mechanical engineering. “Not only because the field of study interests me, but it also has many job opportunities,” said Isaac. Sports provide many challenges for young athletes, some more difficult than others. For Isaac the biggest obstacle he has faced occurred his junior year when he fractured the scaphoid bone in his wrist right before the start of the season. He worked diligently to regain his starting position that year after missing half the season. “Once I was back it was definitely another challenge playing with one arm casted,” said Isaac. He has played sports for many years, but his most memorable moment in football occurred recently when the Bulldogs won their first home game in three years. “Finally ringing the bell at Memorial Stadium is an experience that will stay with me forever,” said Isaac. Isaac enjoys football mostly because of the bond he has with his teammates. “It’s so much more than just being part of a team,” said Isaac. “It’s more like the team is a family and your friends become brothers.” He adds that he also enjoys the physicality that comes with football. “There really isn’t anything better than running full speed and making a big hit.” If you have been at any games this season, you have witnessed

Isaac making those big hits! His time spent in the weight room is definitely evident on the field. What else has football taught him? His coaches have taught him that life is full of hardships and conflicts. “However how you deal with those conflicts is what defines you as a person. It all comes from your attitude,” said Isaac. Favorite Food: Cold pizza. “There is nothing better than pizza leftovers.” Favorite Teacher: “Jim Barton, because of his ability to engage with his students and teach them, but at the same time make a completely uninteresting topic fun or even funny at times.”

senior with a 3.9 GPA, Kennedy Search is both a volleyball player as well as on the Sandpoint High School tennis team. She has gone to state 3 times for tennis and twice for volleyball over the past three years. But it is not just sports that provide the challenges she enjoys, it is academics as well. “I challenge myself with AP courses,” said Kennedy. Kennedy plans on attending Northwest Nazarene University next year where she will be on the volleyball team and will focus her studies on the courses she needs to become a Physician’s Assistant. “I would like to be a physician’s assistant because it’s a steady job, and I get to work with people,” said Kennedy.

When asked what one thing she enjoys most about volleyball, Kennedy could not come up with an answer. “I love everything about it!” she said. Sports does much more than teach students athletics, it also provides them with other lessons that they can apply to other areas of their lives. For Kennedy the most important thing she has learned is that every game is a new game and she is in control of how she plays. Favorite Food: Pesto Tortellini Favorite Teacher: Mrs. Barton “I can talk to her very easily and she is a lot of fun. She has also taught me to have confidence while giving a speech.”

Over the years Kennedy has found her biggest challenge in sports is to be able to stay mentally tough during a tight match. So just how does she overcome that challenge? “I focus on what skills I need to get through the game and that helps me,” said Kennedy. There have been many memorable moments over the years, but Kennedy put her experience playing volleyball at the Junior Olympics and placing fifth in doubles at state last year for tennis at the top of her list.

Keep Your Head in the Game Inform Yourself About the Signs, Symptoms and Management of Head Injuries By Patty Hutchens | Photo by Jason Duchow Photography

Unique and Wonderful Clothing and Gifts... ...from A to Zebra!

T

urn on the television and whether it is a sports channel, documentary or a newscast, there is a good chance you may hear something about concussions. It is a hot topic these days and more and more people are becoming aware of the signs and symptoms of a concussion as well as what to do to manage what can be debilitating effects of a head injury. Concussions, which are classified as a mild traumatic brain injury or TBI, are on the rise as children and athletes are playing harder than ever before and starting to engage in highly physical competition at a very young age. While football receives much of the attention, the reality is concussions can occur in any situation at any age – falling off a swing, slipping and falling, taking a tumble while skiing, playing soccer, falling on the playground just to name a few.

One of the most common myths surrounding concussions is that one must lose consciousness to classify a bump on the head as a concussion. Nothing could be further from the truth. According to the Mayo Clinic, a concussion is a traumatic brain injury that alters the way one’s brain functions. In fact the Mayo Clinic cautions that while concussions usually are caused by a blow to the head, they can also occur when the head and upper body are violently shaken. These injuries can cause a loss of consciousness, but most concussions do not. Because of this, some people have concussions and don’t realize it. Effects are usually temporary but can include headaches and problems with concentration, memory, judgment, balance and coordination. In addition to these symptoms, many athletes will generally report feeling nauseous, dizzy, suffer from double or fuzzy vision, experience sensitivity

40   Sandpoint Living Local | www.sandpointliving.com

to light or noise, feel sluggish, report feeling foggy, or experience a change in sleep patterns. Because concussions are unlike other injuries where a simple x-ray will take the guess work out of a diagnosis, care providers must rely on a patient’s own report of symptoms. And as anyone with children knows, these reports are not always reliable when one wants to return to normal play. Fortunately many school districts, including Lake Pend Oreille, have implemented a testing program that will determine when an athlete can return to normal play following a head injury. Known as the ImPACT Concussion Management Model the athletes begin by taking a baseline ImPACT test. A Credentialed ImPACT Consultant (CIC) administers the test. However, experts caution that the test is not a diagnostic tool and is not a substitute for seeking medical care. Instead, the test is a sophisticated test of cognitive abilities. Once the athlete has had a concussion they retake the test to determine the effects of the concussion has had on his or her cognitive abilities. Once they are back within their baseline range, it is an indication that they are ready to return to play. Even without the benefit of a baseline test, ImPACT’s scientific approach and comprehensive data can take some of the guesswork out of when it’s safe to return to play. For more information on concussions and their symptoms, visit http://www. mayoclinic.com/health/concussion/ DS00320/DSECTION=symptoms and be sure to consult with a trained physician to learn the best way to manage your or your loved one’s symptoms.

ust as spring is a time for rebirth, autumn is also considered a transitional season. The weather turns brisk, the leaves on trees change from dull brown to a firestorm of color, and darkness settles in earlier. For many, it is a favorite time of year, but for others it can be a trigger to falling off the health and fitness wagon. After all, how can you be expected to ignore pumpkin spice lattes? The key, say experts, is to set goals before the new year, and not over a drink as the clock

strikes midnight. “Fall is a great time to start a fitness program because you’re going to create good habits for the holiday season and the upcoming winter months,” says Justin Price, owner of Biomechanics, a personal training and wellness coaching facility in San Diego, CA. The following tips will give you ideas on how to stay healthy -and maybe even avoid the pumpkin cheesecake - through what is arguably one of the most pleasant times of the year:

Head for the hills. Fall is a great time to get outside and explore your own backyard. Grab a friend and find a local park to walk, run or bike. If you’re lucky enough to live close to hills or mountains, autumn is a perfect time to go for a hike.

Turn chores into a workout. Raking leaves or gardening burns about 150 calories every 30 minutes; so if you find that you don’t have time for exercise, grab a rake or a hoe, and turn seasonal tasks into a fat-burning workout.

Drink plenty of water. Without water no living thing can survive, which means it is crucial to maintaining optimal health. While water has a myriad of health benefits, research has shown that in order for your body to function properly, it must continuously work to maintain a proper pH, or chemical balance. This, say experts, is why drinking alkaline ionized water such as Alkame Water (www.alkamewater.com) should be an essential part of anyone’s health plan.

The mild alkalinity is recommended by doctors because it allows for more effective hydration by supporting an optimal pH-balanced body. Additionally, Alkame is a powerful source of antioxidants, which boost the immune system, while also improving aerobic capacity and enhancing energy levels. •

The Secret About Tuna Why Dieticians Love It

D

o you know how good omega-3 fatty acids are for you? Among other benefits, omega-3s help reduce the risk of heart disease and may support your memory as you age. The American Heart Association actually suggests people eat fish rich in omega-3s -- including tuna and salmon -- at least twice a week.

Blatner recommends controlling portion sizes with StarKist’s line of single-serve tuna pouches. “A 3-ounce portion of tuna in water has less than 100 calories and provides 16 grams of protein and about 100 percent of your daily value of omega3s,” adds Blatner. For another way to incorporate the nutrient-rich fish into your diet, try this tuna pasta salad recipe. LEMONY PASTA SALAD Adapted for StarKist by Fitness Magazine Preparation: 15 minutes Cook: 10 minutes Number of servings: 4 5 ounces farfalle 3 (2.6 oz) pouches StarKist Flavor Fresh Pouch Albacore White Tuna 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 1 teaspoon finely grated lemon zest, heaping 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice 1 teaspoon minced garlic 1/2 teaspoon Dijon mustard 1/2 teaspoon sugar 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon black pepper 1 15-ounce can cannellini beans, rinsed and drained 1 cup grape tomatoes, halved 2 cups baby arugula 1/2 small red onion, thinly sliced 4 teaspoons grated Parmesan

Tuna is known as a slimming super food. It’s also full of lean protein and nutrients, such as selenium, vitamin D, niacin and B12.

QUICK TIP

“The ‘slimming secret’ is its protein content,” says registered dietitian Dawn Jackson Blatner, who contributes to Fitness Magazine. “Tuna is a lean protein and an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids. Protein helps you feel full, and preliminary research suggests that omega-3s may decrease the amount of fat your body stores.”

1. Cook farfalle according to package directions. Drain, rinse under cold water and drain again. 2. Drain tuna and transfer to a small bowl. Break into rough chunks, drizzle with 1 tablespoon oil and toss gently. 3. In a large bowl, whisk together lemon zest and juice, remaining oil, garlic, mustard, sugar, salt and pepper. 4. Add farfalle, beans, tomatoes, arugula and onion to bowl; toss well to combine. Add tuna; toss gently. Top each serving with 1 teaspoon Parmesan.

HEALTHYLIVING OCTOBER 2013

Establishing a regular bedtime and wake time will help to regulate sleep patterns.

Tips To Help You Get More Sleep It Will Improve Your Overall Health

O

ne of the simplest things you can do for your health is to get enough sleep. Unfortunately, many Americans have difficulty sleeping, making what to many may seem like a simple task, be anything but simple.

According to the National Sleep Foundation, the average American sleeps about six hours and 55 minutes per night during the week, and 15 percent of adults sleep less than six hours per night. “Lack of sleep can take a significant toll on your overall health and interfere with some of your daily activities,” said Dr. Michael Thorpy, director of the Sleep-Wake Disorders Center at the Montefiore Medical Center in New York. Almost everybody has trouble sleeping now and then, but many Americans experience significant problems getting to sleep or continually wake up in the middle of the night. Such problems may be clinical symptoms of insomnia. According to the National Sleep Foundation, if you have trouble falling or staying asleep at night, or you wake up in the morning and do not feel refreshed, you may be suffering from insomnia. Insomnia can affect people in different ways. Some sufferers have trouble initially getting to sleep, while others wake up in the middle of the night and have difficulty falling back asleep. 44   Sandpoint Living Local | www.sandpointliving.com

To help you get better sleep, Dr. Thorpy suggests these simple tips: •

Set and stick to a sleep schedule. Establish a regular bedtime and wake time.

Set aside time at night to wind down. Spend some quiet time before going to bed. Such activities as watching TV, using the computer or working right before bedtime, or in the bedroom, can make it harder to fall asleep.

Avoid caffeine and alcohol before bed.

Exercise regularly. However do not exercise rigorously near bedtime, and check with your doctor before starting an exercise regimen.

Don’t clock-watch. If you awaken in the middle of the night and stay in bed, don’t lie there staring at the clock. And don’t watch TV or use your laptop or cell phone, because these technologies stimulate the brain, making it tougher to fall back to sleep.

If these tips don’t help, speak with your healthcare professional to help determine whether you are suffering from insomnia and require treatment. More information regarding insomnia is available at the National Sleep Foundation website at www.sleepfoundation.org.

Protect Your Skin from Environmental Assault

L

ooking to update your daytime look? When it comes to makeup, think clean and natural to enhance your own unique beauty.

A beautiful face starts with genuinely fresh and healthy skin. But in today’s environment, pollution and other environmental stressors compromise the skin and contribute to visible signs of aging. To combat these aggressors, Jillian Veran, Director of Color Artistry for Prescriptives, whose work has been featured at high-profile events such as New York Fashion Week and the Oscars, offers the following tips for a daytime makeover that’s fresh, natural and healthy for your skin: 1. Prep for success. After thoroughly cleansing your skin, prep it with Prescriptives’ Super Line Preventor Xtreme, or SLP-X. This cocktail of antioxidants helps defend skin against environmental assaults while improving the look of visible lines and wrinkles. Its

Super Antioxidant System helps boost the skin’s natural defenses against damage by free radicals triggered by environmental assaults both immediately after exposure and again up to 72 hours later. After prepping your skin with SLP-X, apply moisturizer for soft, smooth skin. 2. Get even. To even out your skin tone, apply a light foundation with a sun protection factor of at least 15. Look for a foundation that leaves your skin feeling fresh, not oily. If your skin feels natural, it will look natural too. 3. The eyes have it. When you strive for a clean, natural look, play up just one feature -the eyes - and leave the rest understated. For eyes that pop, coat lower and upper lashes with a volumizing mascara. To create a wide-eyed, ingénue look, sweep the mascara wand straight up and then toward the outer corners of the eyes as you apply the makeup. For an ultrafull lash line, apply a black eye pencil underneath the base of the upper lash line. 4. Add a touch of blush. Apply a bit of blush on the apples of your cheeks for a natural, flushed look. Be careful not to apply too much. Like foundation, blush should never draw attention to itself. 5. Pucker up. Finish the look by glossing your lips with a sheer pink gloss. This will grant your lips a shiny pout that’s striking but not unnatural. To learn more about SLP-X, visit www.prescriptives.com

ascular disease is among the leading causes of death in the U.S. Symptoms, however, often are not present until a catastrophic event occurs, such as a stroke or aneurysm rupture. Millions of Americans at risk for stroke or death from vascular disorders remain unaware of the danger. “Vascular screenings are the best way to locate blockages in arteries and help you avoid serious disease,” said Anil Hingorani, M.D., a vascular surgeon at Lutheran Medical Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., and member of the Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS). “These are painless, noninvasive tests such as an ultrasound examination or Doppler pressure studies.” Dr. Hingorani said that if your carotid artery is not clear, vascular disease could lead to stroke, leg artery blockages and limb loss, and could even cause paralyzing strokes. Vascular disease can cause potentially lethal aneurysms of the aorta (AAA), the main artery of the body. The probability of AAA in the general population is low but increases with the following risk factors: increasing age, male gender, white race, smoking, family history of aneurysms, history of other vascular aneurysms, hypertension, atherosclerotic diseases, cerebrovascular disease and high cholesterol. According to the SVS, a one-time ultrasound screening for AAA is recommended for all men 65 years or older, and for all women 65 years or older with a family history of AAA or who have smoked. Re-screening patients for AAA is not recommended if an initial ultrasound scan performed on patients 65

years of age or older demonstrates an aortic diameter of less than 2.6 cm. However, because of their risk factor, men who have a family history of AAA may be screened as early as 55 years of age. Vascular disease also can impair circulation or cause peripheral arterial disease in the legs, leading to reduced ability to walk and in some cases, leg amputation. Early screening can slow or stop the progression of the disease process and identify individuals who may be at risk for heart attack and stroke due to blockages. To learn more about your vascular health, visit the SVS website at www.VascularWeb.org.

Captioned Phones

Helping Those with Hearing Loss Stay Connected

E

very conversation is challenging. Words are muffled and heard only indistinctly. They are forced to ask people to repeat themselves, and in many cases try to fake their way through a conversation. This is the world of the hard-of-hearing. According to the Hearing Loss Association of America, about 20 percent or 48 million people report some degree of hearing loss. While face-to-face interaction is difficult at best, telephone conversations can be the stuff nightmares are made of. “I went to the VA, and I found out that the problems I have with my hearing were caused partially through the explosions [from the war],” says World War II veteran Don Pullan, 89, of Salt Lake City, Utah. “It was difficult to have a simple conversation with my two daughters over the phone.” According to Dr. Sergei Kochkin, a board member and executive director of the Better Hearing Institute in Washington, D.C. hearing aids can do an excellent job of helping people meet many of their communication needs, sometimes more is needed, “There are situations where additional assistive listening devices are needed,” he said. “Some hearing aid users continue to experience difficulty understanding speech in noisy environments, such as in a restaurant, from a distance, or while listening on the telephone.”

To this end, one company is helping to break the silence for those who have trouble hearing. Salt Lake City-based CaptionCall created a new telephone that allows hard-ofhearing users to follow conversations on their phone much like they would closedcaptioning television. CaptionCall uses voice recognition technology and a transcription service to display written captions of what callers say on a large screen. The service is provided free to all qualified individuals as a result of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Customers make and receive calls as they always have. All that is required to use CaptionCall is a high-speed Internet connection, a standard home phone line and medically recognized hearing loss.

Get Out of Town

Weekend Getaway Leavenworth, Washington Article by Colin Anderson

N

estled in the Cascade Mountains between Seattle and Wenatchee is a community unlike any other in the northwest. Leavenworth is like stepping briefly out of the U.S. and into an alpine village somewhere in Germany. Everything from the local shops to the McDonald’s are done up in Bavarian style and fall is the best time to celebrate everything German. Oktoberfest is the top attraction this month and it’s not just one weekend, but three! Thousands of visitors travel from all over to one of the most authentic Oktoberfest celebrations you’ll find outside of Munich. There are four venues featuring live polka music, arts and crafts, traditional German food, shopping and of course plenty of taps featuring German beers. The event is quite friendly by day but tends to get a little more rowdy in the evening, so if you plan on bringing the little ones, get an early start on the festivities. Families can also visit Kinderplatz which is an area just for kids with a climbing wall and bouncy toys, and L-Bow the Clown. This year, the celebrations are October 4th & 5th, 11th & 12th, and 18th & 19th. There is free public transportation in town and a shuttle service from Wenatchee if you choose to stay there as well. Admission is $10 on Fridays and $20 on Saturdays.

Weekend Getaway If large crowds and large celebrations aren’t your thing, there are plenty of other weekends that the town slows down, but still offers plenty for everyone. Coming in November is the Banff Mountain Film Festival and the Christkindlmarkt. The three day market over Thanksgiving weekend includes food, arts and crafts, unique Christmas gifts and a visit from St. Nick himself. After Thanksgiving the downtown is lit up with Christmas lights during the evening and once the snow falls, kids can go sledding right downtown.

On any other day there is plenty to see and do. Take a stroll down the main drag and visit some of the unique stores such as the hat shop. Try the world’s hottest pepper sauce or sample countless cheeses at the Cheese monger store. Enjoy a brat or have a nice romantic dinner at one of the many fine restaurants. Another reason thousands of people flock to Leavenworth is for the wine tasting. The Columbia and Cascade Valleys are becoming recognized more each year for their superb growing conditions, and the awards keep racking up for vintners who call these areas home. There are literally dozens of wineries and tasting rooms around. You can walk, hire a guide or even book a limo tour that will take you out of the city to some additional tasting rooms, and you won’t have to worry about driving.

If you enjoy a drive, the two lane highways surrounding town are beautiful for a leisurely cruise. The fall colors are some of the best around, and there are plenty of turnouts to snap a few photos. You can also drive up to the top of Steven’s Pass and stop at Lake Wenatchee State Park. If the snow is falling, drop into Steven’s Pass Ski hill for a day on the slopes. There are also opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. And, during the summer months, there are opportunities to fish, raft or go tubing on the rivers. Your options are limitless and with so much to do, you’ll want to visit during all four seasons. Most of the hotels and bed and breakfasts are within walking distance of town, and if you book a condo or vacation rental, it’s usually less than 5 minutes to the festivities. Leavenworth may sound like a ‘tourist trap’ town but it is truly proud of its Bavarian traditions and the locals are happy to show you around and teach you a German tradition or two. Five Common Misconceptions About Cats Debunked Distinguishing Fact From Fiction

T

here are some things that everybody knows about cats, such as they purr when they’re happy. But you might be surprised to learn that many of the “facts” you know about cats are actually untrue. For example, while cats often purr when they’re happy, they may also purr when they’re anxious or uncomfortable.

flood pets’ mouths with good bacteria, so harmful bacteria are less able to grow. These probiotics can be used in addition to brushing or as a stand-alone oral care routine. Myth #4. Cats always land on their feet. Cats are agile creatures with the ability to twist in mid-air, but if they’re falling from a short height, they won’t have time to put themselves feet-first. A fall from a great height could kill or seriously injure a cat, whether it lands on its feet or not.

Do you know fact from fiction about your cat? Here are a few common cat myths debunked: Myth #1. Cats should drink cow’s milk. Cats do not need to drink milk. In fact, cats typically lose the ability to drink milk after they’re weaned, so feeding them milk can give them digestion issues. Myth #2. Cats should eat fish. It’s perfectly fine to give Fluffy fish every once in awhile, but it’s far from kitty’s ideal food. Cats need an amino acid called taurine in their diet, and fish do not provide it. Fish, as a regular part of the diet, could make your cat sick.

Myth #3. It is natural for cats to have bad breath. If kitty’s “morning breath” makes you want to heave, it’s a sign that your cat has an oral health problem and should see a veterinarian. You can prevent dental problems by brushing your cat’s teeth. If your cat is uncooperative, try adding oral care probiotics. The probiotics

Myth #5. Cats gain weight if they are spayed or neutered. Cats’ metabolisms do change after they are fixed, but weight gain can be easily avoided by simply decreasing the amount of food that you feed them. Spaying or neutering is one of the best things you can do for your cat, as it reduces the risk of some types of cancer and helps your cat avoid contributing to the pet overpopulation problem.

Dog Gone Facts 1. Female dog bites are twice as numerous as male bites. 2. The name of the dog on the Cracker Jack box is Bingo. 3. The Beatles song Martha My Dear was written by Paul McCartney about his sheepdog Martha. 4. The canine nose works one million times more efficiently than the human nose. 5. The average dog has 42 permanent teeth. 6. Most domestic dogs are capable of reaching speeds of 20MPH when running flat out but the members of the greyhound family may reach speeds up to 43MPH 7. A male dog urinates with one leg up to better mark his territory. The scent can tell him many things, including size and health. The size is judged by the height of the

stain. Male dogs although, do not actually need to lift their leg. 8. A dogs ear is very sensitive, full of sensory nerves that help to preserve hearing. Never blow into a dogs ear, even gently can hurt a dog. It’s not the actual act of wind, but the frequency at which you blow. It’s like running your fingers on a blackboard, amplified hundreds of times. 9. It is said that dogs come from a creature similar to a wolf called Tomarctus (“father of dogs”) which roamed about 15,000,000 years ago. Dogs first became pets for cavemen, while the Greeks used them for hunting and as guards. Romans traveled through Europe and brought their dogs with them. These dogs bred with the local dogs and gradually many different

breeds were created. 10. There are 701 types of pure breed dogs. The six different groups of dogs are: 1. Toys: Chihuahua, Maltese, Pomeranian, Pug. 2. Hounds: Basset Hound, Beagle, Bloodhound, Whippet. 3. Herding: Border Collie, German Shepherd, Australian Cattle Dog, Sheepdog. 4. Sporting: Golden Retriever, Labrador Retriever, Cocker Spaniel, Weimaraner. 5. Non-Sporting: Boston Terrier, Bulldog, Dalmatian, Chow Chow, Poodle. 6. Working: Alaskan Malamute, Boxer, Bull Mastiff, Saint Bernard, Great Dane.

Three Caring Tips to Keep Your Aging Cat From Becoming a Sourpuss Cats’ health needs change as they get older, but unlike aging humans, they can’t vocalize complaints about aching bones and stiff joints. It is important for cat owners to exercise extra vigilance when it comes to caring for an aging cat.

At-home oral care programs are ideal to help address the daily oral hygiene needs of cats. According to most veterinarians, brushing cats’ teeth on a regular basis is the best action to take to promote good oral health. For cats that are a little more temperamental about pet owners or vets touching their teeth, a simple and effective solution can be found using a type of probiotics that are designed specifically for the oral care needs of cats and dogs. These probiotics can be used in addition to brushing or as a stand-alone oral care routine.

Follow these tips to help your feline friend age gracefully: •

Stay current on vital vaccinations. As a cat grows older, it is essential to keep Cat Flu and Feline Infectious Enteritis in check. Though sometimes tempting to overlook, an older cat has a less efficient immune system and is thus more susceptible to disease. Older cats will only require booster shots. However, if no vaccinations are on record for a cat, or if you are unsure, you can begin vaccinations at any age. Vaccinations can be found for Cat Flu, Enteritis, FeLV, Chlamydia, FIP and Rabies in most areas. Consult your veterinarian for specific details. Don’t hold your breath on oral health care. According to the American Veterinary Dental Society, 70 percent of cats have some form of oral disease by age three. By age 10, it’s safe to presume that cats’ mouths can be rife with infection.

Eliminate pesky parasites. Fleas are the most common skin parasite of cats, leaving many cats with an itchy reaction. To prevent flea bites, use a flea spray or flea powder specifically formulated for cats. Internal parasites, like tapeworms and roundworms, distress older cats, particularly those that go outdoors. Most vets recommend that cats be treated for worms every three to six months -- indooronly cats may have a longer lapse between treatments. Always check with your vet for the best possible treatment program.

Make-A-Wish

Bringing Hope to Children in Idaho and Beyond By Colin Anderson

In 2010 the North Idaho chapter of the Make-A-Wish foundation granted six wishes to children battling life-threatening illnesses. Fast forward to today, and the group is on pace to grant at least 30 wishes in 2013. “We’ve never had to say no, and we’ll go into the negative before we tell a child no,” said North Idaho Regional Manager Melanie Lambrecht. Lambrecht began as a volunteer, but when the opportunity to oversee all the wishes in the area came up, she jumped at the opportunity. Today she works directly with doctors, social workers, and hospital administrators to help bring hope to children w h o

Pick up on Tuesday, November 5th from 7:30am-5pm in the Bonner General Hospital Lobby.

“When they’re going through rigorous medical treatment, we’re the light at the end of the tunnel. Their wish gives them something to look forward to and their wish is something they have complete control of.” said Lambrecht. The Make-A-Wish Foundation is a national organization, but nearly all of the funding for this region comes from donations from local individuals and businesses as well as

Typically, children’s wishes fall into four categories: To Be (a superhero, a firefighter, an author); To Meet (a favorite celebrity or athlete); To Have (a computer, a playhouse, a puppy); or To Go (to a theme park, Hawaii, a major sporting event). All of the expenses from food, travel, and even tips are 100% covered by Make-A-Wish. The foundation has built strong connections across the country allowing them access to discounted event tickets, restaurant gift cards, hotel stays, rentals, and more, allowing each dollar to go further. There are currently more than 200 volunteers across the state including Nicole. Nicole has been a wish grantor in North Idaho for three years. “As a wish granter you enter into the life of a family with the hope of bringing them a bit of cheer and anticipation for their future,” she said. “The children I have met are so resilient, and it’s always fun to feed off the child’s imagination as you help fulfill their

Make-A-Wish is always looking for volunteers to help grant wishes, fundraise, and event plan. You can also donate toys for hospital visits and even give your frequent flyer miles to the organization which will then never expire. Since 1986, Make-A-Wish has granted more than 1,000 wishes to deserving children across Idaho. “We want to continue to sustain and grow so we’re able to grant every wish we can,” said Lambrecht.
