IT’S AN ISSUE MANY PARENTS of young kids face. Their children are making the transition from day care to kindergarten, which also means it’s a challenge for working parents to transport their children between their child care provider and school. Fortunately, Lake Pend Oreille School District is doing its part to introduce an all day kindergarten option district wide; something school officials say is not only convenient for parents but is extremely beneficial to both students and teachers. Currently an all day kindergarten program is only offered at FarminStidwell, but the District is hoping to expand that to other elementary schools during the 2014 – 2015 academic year. “Many of our families choose private schools for kindergarten, as most have a full day option,” said Lake Pend Oreille School District Superintendent Shawn Woodward.
EVENT
Mad Hatter Luncheon and Fashion Show
According to Woodward, full day kindergarten comes with a fee of $2300 for the year. Payments of $230 per month can be made over the course of a ten month period. “Idaho only funds half-day kindergarten,” said Woodward, who adds that students in a full day program learn at a much deeper level. Paula Karr is the full day kindergarten teacher at Farmin-Stidwell and has thoroughly enjoyed the experience thus far. She is in her 19th year teaching in Idaho public schools, the last nine of which have been spent instructing at the kindergarten level. “I feel very privileged to have the opportunity for the first time in my career to teach a full day kindergarten class,” said Karr. “It has been an amazing learning journey so far for my students and I. The kindergartners have made tremendous academic growth this year, especially in their math, reading, and writing skills.”
Looking for an excuse for a lunch date with your girlfriends? Well mark your calendars for Saturday, April 5th. That is when Community Cancer Services is holding its second annual Mad Hatter Luncheon and Fashion show! Dust off your craziest hat and join us for what is sure to be a few hours of fun, laughter and helping a great cause. The luncheon will be from 11:30am to 1:30pm at the Sandpoint Center, 414 Church Street. Included in the event will be a silent / live auction, a raffle and a fabulous fashion show with clothing by Eve’s Leaves. The models? Cancer survivors from our community. There will be sandwiches, desserts, tea and mimosas. In addition to amazing auction prices there will also be a “best hat” contest. So come on out and join the fun and support cancer patients in our community. For information or to purchase your ticket contact Community Cancer Services at 208.255.2301.
The benefits to the students who attend all day kindergarten extend far beyond the core subjects. “There is also more time to incorporate science, art, music, movement and community building opportunities within the school day,” said Karr. Teacher Michelle McNelley agrees. “Full-day kindergarten would be a gift to many children in the Lake Pend Oreille School District,” said the Southside Elementary kindergarten teacher. “The additional instructional time would allow children to learn and explore the curriculum at a developmentally appropriate pace.” The teachers have done their research and have a great deal of information supporting the benefits of all day kindergarten. They hope to do what they can to convey to the public the positive impact that an all day kindergarten program would have on everyone. “A full-day program would feel like a deep breath to both students and teachers,” said McNelley. Lake Pend Oreille School District kindergarten teachers will be conducting an Incoming Kindergarten Informational Meeting on Thursday, April 10th at each local elementary school. The meeting will provide parents of incoming kindergarten students with information regarding the 2014-2015 school year. Information on full-day kindergarten will also be provided and questions will be answered. Please contact your local elementary school for additional information.

Sears Appliance & Hardware Locally owned and nationally known. By Patty Hutchens.
WHEN ONE THINKS OF SEARS, the word local may not instantly come to mind. But that is exactly what Sears Appliance and Hardware in Ponderay is – local. Dan and Melanie Lister purchased their Sears store 18 years ago and have been an integral part of the community over the past two decades. Two years ago the store converted to the new Sear’s Appliance and Hardware and one may be surprised to learn just how extensive their inventory is. They carry over 20,000 home improvement items including paint, nuts, bolts, fasteners, fertilizer, plant food and of course a vast array of appliances and Lawn & Garden Equipment. “We have the largest selection of home appliances in the industry,” said Dan who counted at least 10 major brands. Some of the incentives offered by Sears include promotional offers, no interest financing, price matching, delivery to the Canadian border and into Montana and Washington. “We do all we can to make sure our customers are getting the best price in the marketplace,” said Dan. But it’s not just appliances and tools one can find at Sears. You can also purchase automotive supplies, gun safes, garage door openers, camping supplies and so much more. “Many of the items are ones that people may have been used to finding at Sears, but weren’t available locally,” said Dan, who adds that the number one comment he receives from customers is that they had no idea the store carried so much inventory. And even if they don’t carry an item in the 18,100 square foot store at Bonner Mall, items can be shipped and are readily available since Sears buys and warehouses its own products. And ordering through the local Sears has many benefits. “It keeps the money in our community, and there is no shipping cost if it is an item that is able to be shipped via UPS,” said Dan.

Sear’s loyal customers are something which Dan and his 15 employees value. “It’s nice to own a business and live where people know you and want to support you,” he said. In fact he has customers who will order locally and have an item delivered in another city or town to a friend or family member- all in an effort to support his local business. “We strive to be the neighborhood solution for all our customer’s needs,” said Dan. Both Dan and Melanie are great supporters of the community that has made them so successful. A contributor to Ponderay Rotary, The Elks and many local events, Dan said he especially enjoys lending his support to the youth in the community. “We always do what we can to support the kids and high school students,” said Dan.

Although his plans include opening a store in Boise in the near future, Dan said he and Melanie do not have any plans of leaving the area. “Sandpoint is our home. There’s a great mixture of art, outdoor activities, and it still has a hometown feel.” And thanks to Dan and Melanie so does Sears, your neighborhood Appliance and Hardware store.

Blaze a Trail Exploring the international language of music in Sandpoint. By Patty Hutchens. IT IS NO SECRET that Sandpoint is an arts community. But what many may not know is that we have our very own Music Conservatory where people from Spokane to Canada travel to attend one of the many classes offered by the accredited performing arts school. “We have many very dynamic programs,” said Karin Wedemeyer, the Executive Director of the Music Conservatory of Sandpoint. The students range in age from 2 to 80 years old, and there are a total of 14 instructors. In just 5 years the enrollment has grown from 30 students to the current 190 students, 140 of whom are onsite and 50 in the outreach program. “We threw a peanut into the lake and a tidal wave came back,” joked Wedemeyer about the rapid growth.
DYNAMIC & ENRICHING! As the Music Conservatory of Sandpoint continues to grow, Wedemeyer hopes the opportunities for young musicians to travel abroad does as well. “Music breaks down the borders,” she said. “We all speak music.”
For the second year, the school is taking part in the Young Artist’s Exchange Program. Hosted by the Centro Estatal de las Artes (CEART), the program provides four students and an instructor an opportunity to travel to Mexico to perform with musicians from the Mexicali conservatory. In turn, four students from Mexico travel to Sandpoint. In April the Sandpoint group will take three instrumentalists and one vocalist, all of whom will travel with Wedemeyer and Karen Foster, the co-conductor of the youth orchestra. The exchange program provides enriching experiences for all involved, with the students forming an instant bond as they collaborate to create beautiful music. To help raise funds for the trip, there will be a performance by students of the Music Conservatory of Sandpoint on March 16th at 4pm at First Lutheran Church on Olive Street in Sandpoint. It will provide the community an opportunity to witness first hand the wonderful music as well as support the students in their mission. Hors d’oeuvres and refreshments will follow the one-hour performance, which is open to the public with suggested donations of $10 for adults and $5 for students. The school is a trimester-based program with a summer program as well as a summer camp. But the vision was not
always for it to be a school. Wedemeyer and co-founder Ruth Klingensmith were having coffee and discussing the possibility of holding workshops. “Our coffee was so hot, we had to wait awhile for it to cool down,” recalls Wedemeyer. “Within a half hour the workshop became a conservatory!” The Conservatory began in a back room at Studio 1, and in five short years it has nearly outgrown its space on the second floor in the old City Hall building downtown. With their international backgrounds, Klinginsmith is half Dutch and Wedemeyer is a German born opera singer, the women are able to introduce concepts from all over the world. “This is very fertile ground (for musicians),” observed Wedemeyer, who adds that the role of the Music Conservatory of Sandpoint is to nurture the musicians and provide an ongoing partnership with them. As the Music Conservatory of Sandpoint continues to grow, Wedemeyer hopes the opportunities for young musicians to travel abroad does as well. “Music breaks down the borders,” she said. “We all speak music.”

SANDPOINT, IDAHO
Riding for a cause. By Patty Hutchens.
SEVEN YEARS AGO Sandpoint resident and bicycling enthusiast Brad Williams had a vision to bring a bike race to the Sandpoint area. His inspiration, he says, came from the open road.
“Most riders are regional, but we have had riders from as far away as Florida, Vermont, Canada and even Italy and Spain,” said Elana Westphal, a member of Sandpoint Rotary and an organizer of this year’s CHAFE 150.
“That road between Bonners and the junction of MT 53 and Highway 200 is breathtakingly beautiful, and there is not much traffic,” said Williams. “I have been riding in many places around the northwest, and it just does not get much better.”
Because of its incredible setting and the thoughtfulness and organization that go into the ride, CHAFE 150 has been named one of the top endurance rides in America.
He also knew that in addition to a beautiful route, he wanted it to be challenging. “So why not 150 miles in a day?” said Williams. Now, seven years later, the CHAFE 150 (Cycling Hard for Education) draws riders from all over the world.
“We have great rest stops, motorcycle escorts, excellent signage, great volunteers, and an excellent registration event and after ride party,” said Williams. “We really try to make this ride the best organized, best staffed ride of its kind in the country.” Shortly after its inception, word of the event quickly traveled around the bicycling community, and cyclists of all levels were
eager to participate. It was then that planners added a second route, the ½ CHAFE, an 80mile ride that begins in Troy, Montana where riders and their bikes are bussed. The ride follows the second half of the CHAFE 150 route back to Sandpoint’s City Beach Park. But there is much more to the CHAFE 150 than the breathtaking ride and the camaraderie of the cycling community. The event has raised a significant amount of funds all of which have gone back into the community to benefit education. For many years proceeds were directed to Panhandle Alliance for Education’s (PAFE) Ready! for Kindergarten program. The program was a huge success and continues today to assist parents of children up to five years of age prepare for kindergarten. PAFE was the organizer and presenting
organization of the CHAFE 150 for the first five years, and then last year Sandpoint Rotary enthusiastically took the ride over and continued the theme of benefiting local education. Organizers and Rotary members met with representatives of the LPOSD special needs education program to identify needs of students on the autism spectrum. “Autism was selected as we felt we could make a significant contribution to the special needs teachers and their students,” said Mel Dick of CHAFE 150. “Autism is also a cause that impacts 1 in 88 children and 1 in 55 boys but receives far less attention than other childhood afflictions like diabetes, cancer and AIDS.” In addition to LPOSD, proceeds this year will also benefit Sandpoint Rotary’s annual college and post secondary education scholarship award program. With 260 riders last year, the number is sure to increase with the addition of a 30 mile Fun Ride that begins at City Beach Park and travels to the Pack River Store through Selle Valley and back to City Beach Park along the Lower Pack River Road. For those interested in the full CHAFE 150 route, it begins at City Beach Park in Sandpoint, travels north to Bonners Ferry, east to Troy Montana, south along the Bull River Valley and then back to Sandpoint City Beach Park via Clark Fork and along the shores of Lake Pend Oreille.

at the Ranch
In addition to several corporate sponsors, many of which have already showed great support for this year’s event, money is raised through rider registration fees and donations. Whether you are a rider, a volunteer, or a community member just wanting to cheer on the participants, there will be an afterride party at City Beach Park. The event will be catered by Trinity at City Beach and includes great food, beer, wine and live music. The riders will receive an after ride meal and drinks as part of their registration fee, and all others in attendance can purchase food and drink for a modest cost with the net proceeds going towards the ride. To volunteer, contact ride coordinator Jane Huang at ride@chafe150.org.

“Chet and Shari built this business from the ground up and put a lot of effort into making Jalapenos what it is today,” said Dave of the previous owners who opened the restaurant in April 1993. He and Justin concur that they both hope to continue for another 20 years the tradition of quality Mexican food started by Chet and Shari French. Jalapenos has always been known for its friendly staff, festive atmosphere, and delicious food and drinks. And that is not going to change. Along with a full bar, patio seating, private event room, orders to go and

With strong ties to the community, the two are well known and well respected for their contributions to Sandpoint. Dave sits on the Board of Directors for the Festival at Sandpoint, a position he has held for over 15 years; and Justin is on the Board of Directors for the Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce and the Visit Sandpoint Council. “Several of my managers have or are going through the Leadership Sandpoint program through the Chamber and much of the Trinity at City Beach staff is involved in volunteering for many of the nonprofits throughout Sandpoint and the surrounding area,” said Justin. Both Justin and Dave know it is important to have a family friendly atmosphere and offer just that at Jalapenos. Dave and his wife Jolene have two grown children and two grandchildren, and Justin and his wife Shaunavee have two young children. Just a few months into their new venture, both Dave and Justin are confident it will be a success. “We have a very solid relationship not only in business but as great friends,” said Dave. “We have very similar views and ideas about our business, and it makes it easy when we can focus on the same goals. It also doesn’t hurt that he makes me laugh everyday, and that is worth a lot.”

ShopinStyle A Timeless Treasure TRENDS IN NATURAL COLOR DIAMONDS SHINE IN EVERYDAY FASHION. SPRING AND SUMMER are synonymous with a flurry of wedding activities. Although engagement rings and wedding bands are the main jewelry at a wedding, fine jewelry is actually the most considered choice for all of the gifts surrounding the romantic affair -- bride gifts, groom gifts, gifts for the mother of the bride, not to mention tokens of appreciation for bridesmaids and groomsmen. Nowadays, pave set fashion styles and some natural color diamonds are providing more affordable options, helping foster an “everyday” approach to diamond jewelry. Specifically, Argyle diamonds from Australia reveal a broader selection when it comes to rare yet reasonably priced jewelry. “Diamonds are a classic staple on the red carpet, but we’re starting to see more options. Natural color diamonds are really popular among celebrities and the general public right now, especially when they complement current-day fashion trends,” explains Michael O’Connor, a jewelry and design expert for celebrities and stylists. “Although natural colors are unique, Argyle diamonds are available at an affordable price range.” Since Argyle diamonds are usually mined in small crystals, they lend themselves well to fashionable trends like pave and micropave. But what makes Argyle gems truly unique is the spectrum of colors they offer. Many designers consider champagne to be the perfect neutral shade, since it pairs well with the majority of colors walking off the runway. That might account for the $5 billion worth of champagne diamonds that are sold every year. To find more natural colors, visit www.champagnediamondcenter.com. But pave settings and champagne shades aren’t the only trends that won’t cost you. Vintage jewelry is staging a comeback alongside 80s classics like layered chains, bows, big crystal rings, acrylic and even plastic. The quest for inexpensive fashion, coupled with a growing interest in sustainability, led designers to experiment with materials like wood, rubber, glass and ribbon. Learn more about Argyle diamonds at www.australiandiamondscenter.com.

Being Discovered
Accolades and praise continue to roll in as the local area receives national attention. By Colin Anderson & Patty Hutchens. TRAVELING IS ALL ABOUT experiencing new cultures, ideas, landscapes, and ways of life. People fondly recall the beaches of Hawaii, the slopes of Colorado, the glitz of New York and the charm of San Francisco. In our travels we often think ‘this place is great, I could definitely live here full time.’ But the truth is there are many who would love to call North Idaho home. The natural beauty, small town charm, and limitless recreation of this area is no longer a secret as publications, blogs, and news agencies continue to pile on accolades for our region. Have you ever noticed the number of visitors to North Idaho during what we may think of as a never-ending winter? People from all over the country flock here to experience our mountains and legendary powder during ski season. That is in part due to the attention the press has paid to what is in our own backyard. USA Today Travel recently compiled a list of the 10 most scenic ski resorts in the world and ranked Schweitzer Mountain as number 8. It cites the magnificent views of three mountain ranges, three states and Canada, and the massive 65-mile long Lake Pend Oreille and its tiny island chains and jigsaw coastline. Travel and Leisure Magazine also put Sandpoint on their list of prettiest winter towns in 2012, highlighting the year round recreational opportunities of skiing, sailing, hiking, fishing and paddle boarding, but also recognizing the presence of an art community and the exceptional shopping and dining opportunities in Sandpoint. Schweitzer has also gained notoriety as an editor’s choice in Ski Magazine and as the #1 ski town in the country by travel experts Rand McNally. While winter enthusiasts flock to Sandpoint December through March, both Sandpoint and Coeur d’Alene offer picturesque vacation spots in

summer as well. Whether it is golfing, boating, or just looking for a chance to bask in the sun by a beautiful body of water, visitors come and pump millions of dollars into our local economy each year. And while Coeur d’Alene boasts a population of around 45,000 and experienced a growth of nearly 28% from 2000 to 2010, it still exudes a small town charm. According to Katherine Coppock, Manager of Coeur d’Alene’s Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, the summer months are especially busy for Coeur d’Alene. “Over the course of a year we see about 30,000 visitors at our center here in town and about 12,000 at our Gateway Visitor center located on eastbound I-90,” said Coppock, who adds that these statistics only reflect a fraction of the actual number of visitors, but also give an indication of the trends and fluctuations in tourism. Another statistic that reveals tourism trends is the lodging tax dollars. “That is the 2% tax charged across Idaho when anyone stays in a hotel, motel, B&B or privately owned campground,” explained Coppock. “In fiscal year 2012, Kootenai County collected $55.8 million and the entire state of Idaho collected $403 million.” There was a significant increase in 2013 with Kootenai County collecting $59.65 million. In 2011 Coeur d’Alene was recognized by budgettravel.com as one of the most perfect summer lake towns, referencing the 25-mile long Lake Coeur d’Alene, the town’s brewpubs and art galleries along with the more secluded sheltered coves and inlets at the south end of the lake. The Coeur d’Alene Resort and Golf Course have also earned dozens of accolades over the past fifteen years including: 5 Star Resort and ‘America’s Most Beautiful Resort Golf Course’ by Golf Digest, Travel and Leisure Magazine Top 500 hotels of the world, and AAA Four Diamond Award. Coeur d’Alene ranks on several lists put out by Forbes Magazine as well. #50 for Best Small Places for Businesses and Careers, #5 on Cost of Doing Business, #130 in Job Growth, and #82 in Education. As baby-boomers are settling into retirement age, Coeur d’Alene is being hailed as a great community to spend those golden years. Where to Retire magazine placed Coeur d’Alene on its top 100 places to retire list. To have two towns within 45 miles of one another that can offer similar amenities is definitely an added attraction. Many who visit Coeur d’Alene will take a day trip to Sandpoint and the same can be said for Sandpoint tourists.
People from all over the country flock here to experience our mountains and legendary powder during ski season. Sandpoint, an eclectic arts community, has received much notoriety as publications recognize that it offers far more than just world class skiing. Just some of the accolades include the following: National Geographic Adventure named Sandpoint as one of it’s

SPARKLE’S
CLOSET Helping Young Women Say Yes to the Dress! By Patty Hutchens.
WHEN AMY SHEPARD WAS ASKED to the homecoming dance last fall, she turned to her friend Trinity Young to see if she could borrow one of her dresses. It was then that Trinity’s mom, Elizabeth, and Trinity decided to explore an idea they and Trinity’s older sister Teresa had heard about several years before. The three had watched a documentary about how communities were collecting and donating dresses for the benefit of teenage girls attending their school dances. “We all trade and share clothes as it is,” said Amy, who had read about a similar concept in Seventeen Magazine. With just two weeks to go before the dance, Trinity and Amy, together with their friends Darbey Scrimsher and Hailey Dunn, spoke with Sandpoint High School teacher Heather Guthrie about converting a corner of her classroom into a dress shop. “Once the word spread, people wanted to help,” said Darbey. They knew if they wanted it to succeed, their project needed a name. “The female Bulldog (the high school mascot) is named Sparkle,” explained Trinity on how they came up with the name Sparkle’s Closet. With help from their moms, the girls organized the dresses by color and sizes and took photos of each dress to keep track of their inventory, which in the end totaled close to 60 dresses.

QUOTABLE “We want to do everything we can to make them feel special,” said Amy. Pictured are SHS students and friends Darbey Scrimsher, Trinity Young, Amy Shepard and Hailey Dunn model some of the many dresses that will be available to girls for this spring’s prom through Sparkle’s Closet.
“It’s cool to see how happy the girls were,” said Hailey. “Especially the girls who were not going to go (to the dance) because they didn’t have a dress.”
“The quality and selection of the dresses was big enough that the girls were not settling on a dress. They truly were able to fine one they loved,” said Amy’s mom, Janine, who helped distribute the dresses. The group hopes to make Sparkle’s Closet a school-sanctioned club, ensuring it will continue after they graduate in 2015. “By being a club it will make it a lot easier to get the word out,” said Amy. Sparkle’s Closet is for the benefit of any girl for any occasion. “If a girl needs a dress for any special occasion, she can go to the closet and pick something out,” said Elizabeth, who understands the difficulty many parents have finding the time to go to Coeur d’Alene or Spokane to shop. “It’s really a time and money issue for many people.” The joy these four friends feel from being able to make a difference in the lives of others is clear as they enthusiastically share their stories. “It’s cool to see how happy the girls were,” said Hailey. “Especially the girls who were not going to go (to the dance) because they didn’t have a dress.” “That’s 30 girls who would not have gone!” exclained Amy.
Friends gather for photos before last fall’s Sandpoint High School 40 Sandpoint Living | www.SandpointLiving.com Homecoming dance.
Trinity, who is interested in pursuing a career in fashion, said she loved seeing how happy each girl was after finding that special dress.
Their next task is to gather prom dresses for the spring. “Prom dresses are harder to find,” said Darbey referring to the more formal event. But that is not deterring them. In fact, they are starting their campaign early in the hope that many in the Sandpoint community and beyond will step forward
We Set the Standard!
To choose a dress, there is a $15 fee, $10 of which is a deposit that will be given back when the dress is returned, and $5 is for dry cleaning, a fee that Nu-Way Dry Cleaners graciously reduced for the girls. The girls are constantly coming up with new ideas to make their project even better. They would love to have hairstylists in the community donate some of their time to help the patrons of Sparkle’s Closet get their hair styled or a nail technician do manicures before their events. “We want to do everything we can to make them feel special,” said Amy. As for Trinity, she is confident that this newly established tradition will continue long after she and her friends graduate. “I know a lot of girls in Sandpoint that like to help people and like to make others feel special,” said Trinity. If you would like to donate a dress to Sparkle’s Closet, you may drop it off at the main office at SHS during the school day. SANDPOINT HIGH SCHOOL. BY PATTY HUTCHENS. SINCE MOVING TO SANDPOINT his freshman year, Sandpoint High School sophomore Carlos Collado has made his mark in the world of Sandpoint athletics. This past fall Carlos was on the varsity football team and is the only sophomore currently on the bulldog’s varsity basketball team. He also competes on the SHS track team. While all of the sports in which he is involved provide him with different opportunities and challenges, Carlos said the common thread among all of them is what he enjoys most about competition – the camaraderie it provides. “I love to play with my friends,” said Carlos.
date has been playing on the offensive line in football. Well over six feet tall, he said his height was at times an obstacle. “But I overcome that with my quickness,” said Carlos. Last fall Carlos said he experienced the highlight of his bulldog career when the varsity football team defeated West Valley. “We showed everyone that we can compete with the rest,” he said.

While college is still a couple years away, Carlos said he definitely hopes to participate in sports at the college level. As for academics, he plans to become a doctor specializing in sports medicine. “If I can’t play sports, I want to help others,” he said. There are many life lessons one takes away from the experience of competition – whether if it’s part of a team or an individual sport. For Carlos he said the most important thing he has learned is dedication. “The end result is even better if you put everything you have into it.” Favorite Food: Peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Favorite Teacher: “Mr. Search because he challenges me to work harder.”

SANDPOINT HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR NIKOLE ALAMILLO is no stranger to bulldog fans. Whether you follow track or basketball, her name is synonymous with success. With one more high school track season ahead of her, Nikole is already a two time state champion and four time district champion in discus. “I was also a district champion and placed sixth in state in shot put,” adds Nikole who is hoping to make her fourth trip to state this spring. Ranked 8th nationally among her age group for throwing, Nikole has been nominated for the North Idaho Hall of Fame. “I have lettered all four years in basketball and the past three years in track,” she said. In basketball, Nikole was chosen this year as an all league player for the Inland Empire League and helped the lady bulldogs travel to state, one of the highlights of her bulldog career.

With a 4.0 GPA and an incredible athletic record, Nikole has many options ahead of her for college. Her top choices are Carroll College and Lewis-Clark State College. Whichever she chooses, she plans on throwing discus and hammer. Nikole said she will most likely major in chemistry and become a Dental Hygienist. “I have always wanted to work on peoples’ teeth, and I thought a dental hygienist would be the best fit.”

It is very hard to throw in the wind; it either helps your throw or hurts it. In my case it hurts it. It’s also hard, and very scary, to spin when the ring is slick.” But even given those obstacles, she would not trade the experience. “The thing I love about track is its both and individual sport and a team sport. Whitefish, Montana Weekend Getaway. By Colin Anderson.
WHITEFISH, MONTANA is truly one of the fist iconic tourist cities in the Western U.S. When Glacier National Park was officially given its designation, scores of tourists from the east coast loaded on the Amtrak Empire Builder and traveled west for days, finally landing in Whitefish, their last stop before entering the park. Whitefish grew so quickly that it was affectionately known as ‘Stumptown’ as streets and buildings were being built faster than stumps from felled trees could be removed. Today, the town has blossomed into a mix of upscale shops and eateries as well as authentic western saloons and ranches. It’s a place where high fashion meets cattle ranchin’, and it’s only a couple of hours drive from your home. If you’re tired of driving, let someone else do the work. You can hop on an Amtrak train from either Spokane or Sandpoint and take it all the way to the Whitefish Depot where those first adventure seekers landed decades ago. It’s roughly a five hour trip from Spokane and a four hour trip from Sandpoint. The Whitefish Depot is within walking distance of downtown and shuttles and taxis can be arranged to take you to your accommodations. The other main attraction that helps define Whitefish is Big Mountain, now known as Whitefish Mountain Resort. The mountain is visible looking north of town and having been constructed in the 1940’s is one of the oldest resorts in the country. While the terrain is different, it shares many similarities in size and annual snowfall to Schweitzer Mountain. From the top you are also looking down on town and beautiful Whitefish Lake. There are ski in/ski out condos, luxury homes, and other mountainside lodging if your weekend involves a heavy dose of powder skiing. Summer time brings additional activities to the mountain including hiking, mountain biking, zip lining, an alpine slide, and scenic chair rides. For the ‘out and about’ crowd there are dozens of restaurants and bars to choose from, many
more than a town of less than 7,000 needs. Stop into Great Northern Brewing and pick up a growler of freshly made Montana beer to go or take a stroll through town and find fresh fish, elk steak and burgers, pizza, Italian, and just about anything else your pallet can handle. Other than its natural beauty, Whitefish also boasts a symphony with an ever rotating list of musicians as well as a theatre company that puts on performances throughout the year. If you’re traveling in summer, it would be a mistake not to visit ‘The Crown Jewel of the Continent’ Glacier National Park. Just 30 minutes separates you from the West Glacier Park entrance and some of the most spectacular scenery in North America. Take the ‘Going to the Sun Road’ to Logan Pass, and it will be one of the more memorable drives of your life. It’s a white knuckle ride with thousand foot cliffs between your vehicle and a few feet of pavement, but the views are spectacular. Remember it can

The visitor center is located at the top of the 6,600 foot pass and is a wealth of knowledge about the park. You’re also likely to see mountain goats and bighorn sheep. Keep an eye out for Grizzlies and elk on your drive up and down. There are countless trails and backcountry to explore as well, just be sure to do your research before choosing a route. Health&Lifestyle Headaches Are Not Normal
A few lifestyle adjustments can often provide relief. By Coeur d’Alene Hand Therapy
“I DON’T HAVE HEADACHES MUCH…only two or three times a week.” When I hear these words, I realize how we often ignore or force through symptoms until they “scream” at us or become chronic to the point we become non- functional. There are many simple things you can do to understand, prevent and resolve headaches if you are informed and listen to your body. Many people think of headaches as “normal.” However, headaches are part of our “early warning system” that something is not right. They affect our attention and focus as and decrease our productivity. Sometimes headaches debilitate us, undermine our best intentions and interfere with our lives. The most common reason for headaches is dehydration. A simple glass or two of water can relieve or minimize up to 80% of headaches. Improper nutrition is another culprit. The combination
of lack of sleep, no breakfast, a quick or non-existent lunch, eating foods high in sugar and caffeine with minimal water intake and poor air quality are the perfect recipe for headaches and poor performance. The majority of headaches are “tension” headaches caused by physical or emotional stress, postural misalignment and sustained positions or motions. These can occur at work, home, or in sports and are common reasons for referral to therapy. For example, staring for hours at the computer, long periods of driving or deskwork with neck bent forward or extended, all can trigger occipital (base of skull) or frontal headaches and eye or neck pain. Long periods in the dentist’s chair can be emotionally stressful, as well as placing the head and neck in unusual positions for long periods of time. Headache with TMJ dysfunction (characterized by clicking, popping, pain or limited movement of the temporo-mandibular joint of the jaw) is
March 2014 | Sandpoint Living 49
also common. The TMJ joint is particularly susceptible to changes in posture and holding patterns. A therapist trained to look at the whole body and your lifestyle can assess the triggers and factors associated with your headaches and develop a treatment plan specifically for you. The plan may include myofascial release or other manual therapy techniques, stretches, exercises, as well as assessment of your home and work activities. Other causes of headaches are allergies, sinus problems, infection, hormone imbalances or medication reactions. Seek medical attention promptly if you have headaches from recent falls or accidents, head trauma, increased pain, tingling, numbness of arms or face and decreased mental clarity, since they could signal serious medical problems. Medication may help, but used too frequently may not relieve and can increase headaches. So before you reach for the medication bottle, here are some tips: • Listen to your body - catch the headache before it becomes “full blown” • Refocus, breath, relax and stretch • Drink water • Eat a healthy snack (not sugar or caffeine) • Cold compresses on neck or forehead may help and/or keeping body warm If headaches continue, monitor the type, frequency, intensity and duration so you have information to share with your medical professional and get the treatment you need to keep you productive, active and full of life!

Changing Home Care
Ask about our Patient Loyalty Program!
Explore the options for you or your loved one. By Bruce Weaver, MPA, PA-C President & CEO AAging Better In-Home Care.
VARIOUS TYPES OF SENIOR CARE communities (Assisted Living Facilities, Alzheimer’s Care Facilities, Independent Living Communities, etc.) are being built, bought up by large national corporations or merging with already established facilities here in north Idaho. But they aren’t the only choices when it comes to arranging care for you or a loved one when you or they can no longer carry on the normal activities of daily living. Many seniors, as well as the disabled of all ages, prefer to stay (and even pass away) at home, and thanks to a growing home care industry, staying in the comfort of one’s own home while “aging-in-place” is now for many a far more preferable option than going into one of the facilities mentioned above. Nurses in the United States have been visiting sick patients in their homes for well over a century, and the “house call” by some doctors is even making a comeback. But it wasn’t until the 1950s that organized home care agencies, still comprised of nurses only, became a major player in health care. Until that time, nursing homes were essentially the only option for those individuals that were disabled or too aged to care for themselves. In 1965, provisions for home care were included in Medicare and Medicaid legislation, and Medicare (a federally funded program) is even now considering expanding those services that have traditionally been paid for by state Medicaid programs. Despite its early origins, receiving services at home is still one of the newer senior care options available today. However, many families and seniors are still unaware
that agencies exist that can provide such services. As many older adults choose to age-in-place and costs for nursing homes continue to increase, hiring a home care agency to provide home caregivers is an increasingly attractive and popular option for senior or disabled care. A number of the more established north Idaho home care agencies provide caregivers in all five northern counties, while others only serve one or two counties. Doing an on-line search of “Home Care” and “North Idaho” will bring up virtually all the area agencies. As you search for a quality company, it’s important to look at what qualifications the managers, as well as the home care aides, have. Are there RNs on the management staff, and do they train the caregivers who provide the in-home care? And since many seniors and disabled have associated medical conditions, is there a medically trained individual on staff that can answer questions or provide guidance to the caregivers when problems develop while providing personal care services? Home care has now evolved far beyond just doing laundry, house cleaning, making meals or shopping for clients. It now involves preventing injuries, possible “first aid” care or coordinating with the client’s doctors, family members and other providers to ensure the seniors or disabled individuals stay both safely and effectively at home. As the over-60 population continues to grow, more and more seniors and families can look forward to experiencing the benefits of cost, comfort and safety that make in-home care such a valuable option.

Want to Lose Weight?
It’s not a diet, it’s a lifestyle. By Lisa Paull, Certified Personal Trainer, FAST Program Director at PneuThera. YOU WANT TO LOSE WEIGHT, but with so many diets out there how do you know which one is right for you? Do you go Paleo, try the Atkins diet again, join Weight Watchers? There are dozens of diet plans on the market, and many promise to magically shed fat off your body. Although many diets are ranked high for initial weight loss, their long-term results are sorely lacking. After trying a “diet”, accelerated weight gain is experienced when we return to our old habits. So how do you quit on-and-off dieting for good and switch to a healthy lifestyle based on nutritious food and regular exercise? First, it’s important to address the reasons you want to lose weight, why you’ve been unable to maintain a healthy weight in the past, and what drives you to eat unnecessarily. Addressing the eating habits that lead to excess body fat can help reduce the consumption of calories at the wrong times. Healthy weight loss is not simply a calories in/ calories expended equation. Eating 1000 calories in burgers and fries will affect your body differently than the same amount of calories in vegetables and lean meats. Changing eating habits and increasing physical activity are the cornerstones of a healthy lifestyle. Keeping a food diary to calculate amounts of calories, fat, protein, carbohydrates, and salt can serve as a jumping off point. It can open your eyes to the eating patterns that are keeping you unhealthy. Once you determine where you are in excess, pick one thing to remove from your diet. Whether that be soft drinks (diet or regular), sugar, snack foods, or white flour products, you will start to notice the changes in your body. Assimilating one adjustment

at a time will bring you to a balanced healthy diet which will follow you long-term and lower your risk for disease. Purposely take it slowly to make sure you are adjusting physically and emotionally to the lifestyle changes. Emphasize lean protein, fruits, vegetables, and some whole grains. Spread your calories out, consuming 5-6 small meals a day. Pay attention to the ingredients and nutritional content of the food you buy and evaluate them based on calories and nutritious value.
Changing eating habits and increasing physical activity are the cornerstones of a healthy lifestyle.
A successful, long-term weight management plan must include an increase in activity. Plan for at least 30 minutes of cardio exercise every day. If you are not sweating and can carry on a normal conversation

Home&Essentials ReSTORE
Helping raise funds to provide shelter and more for area families. By Patty Hutchens. WHEN YOU HEAR HABITAT FOR HUMANITY in Sandpoint, you think of a community gathering volunteers to pound nails, install plumbing, put up dry wall and provide landscaping so that families that need help can finally have a safe and secure home in which to live. But this non-profit organization does much more. By providing homes to partnering families, Habitat for Humanity goes a long way in assisting them in breaking the cycle of poverty. The families purchase the home through no-profit, no-interest mortgage loans and provide much of the volunteer hours as well. This fresh start frees them from some of the financial burden allowing them to improve the lives of their families by providing enough food and medical care for everyone in their care. And what about the children? They too are the beneficiaries of the ripple effect that a safe and secure home provides. Studies show that children who have adequate housing tend to do better in school and are happier and healthier. So just how does Idaho Panhandle Habitat for Humanity accomplish its goals? One way is by raising money through the Habitat for Humanity ReStore. ReStores are home improvement stores and donation centers that sell new and gently used furniture, home accessories, building materials, plumbing, and appliances to the public at a fraction of the retail price. The profits from the Sandpoint ReStore are used to build homes in Bonner County thereby contributing to the well being of the community and its members. The Sandpoint ReStore is a place where one can donate items as well as shop for quality used items. For many, the thought of a home renovation is quickly set aside once they begin to add up the costs. But that is where ReStore can help. If you are one who loves to do home projects, a landlord looking for quality products at a reduced price, an interior designer who loves to switch things up all the time or a contractor, you should make Sandpoint ReStore one of your first stops. If you have large items you would like to donate, but do not have a way to deliver them, contact the Sandpoint ReStore to discuss pick up options. To see all that the ReStore has to make your project more affordable, stop by and visit them Wednesday through Saturday at 1519 Baldy Park Rd, Sandpoint or call them at 208.265.5313. Remember, by shopping at or donating to ReStore, you are helping others on the first step to a happier, healthier more secure life and building a stronger Community. REDUCE YOUR RISK OF FALLS
Your Goals Are Our Priority!
Sandpoint’s Only Full Size Warm Water Therapy Pool
Warm water therapy can help. By Jenny Jones, P.T.
IN THIS WINTER SEASON, it is easy for anyone to fall and possibly get injured; but our elder population has an increased risk of falling anywhere. The elderly have a 9 times greater risk of dying from a fall than a 20 year old driver does in an auto accident. Loss of balance, however, does not have to be an inevitable and “unfixable” part of the aging process. Decreased balance is not always apparent. Many folks can walk upright in a straight path without aid of a cane and seem fine, but the trick comes when they may have to turn around, raise their arms, or step over an object. Reaching out to touch furniture or walls while walking is known as “cruising” and a sure sign that they need the extra stability of a cane or possibly even a walker. Canes, walkers, furniture, and a friend’s arm can all add security and decrease the chance of a fall but will not stop the progression of loss of balance. Our vision, vestibular (inner ear), posture, muscle strength and feeling in our lower limbs all affect posture and some of these can be corrected.

One of the body’s first lines of defense for maintaining standing balance comes from our ankle muscles’ ability to continuously adjust how our body is positioned over our feet to maintain balance. Hips next come into play to keep us upright. The ability to recover our balance once it is challenged involves the ability to quickly take a step, shift our trunk or outstretch an arm. All these factors can be relearned through physical therapy, as well as correcting postural problems such as tight or weak muscles, especially the back muscles, which begin to succumb to gravity in the elderly population. Balance improves consistently for the majority of patients who participate in warm water pool therapy. Muscles can be
stretched and strengthened in the buoyant environment. Balance can be challenged and worked on without the fear of falling. Balance tasks can be progressed at different depths with the greatest risk being getting a hairdo wet! If balance has become as issue for you or a loved one, your doctor can refer you to a physical therapist for evaluation and set up a treatment program. A walker does not always have to become necessary if balance loss can be corrected. Stay safe and be careful on that ice! Jenny Jones, PT has been a licensed physical therapist since 1980 and is passionate about her vocation.
OBAMACARE DEADLINE
Learn the facts and apply before March 31st. By Patty Hutchens.
THE DEADLINE TO ENROLL for coverage under the new Health Care Reform Act is fast approaching. Insurance agencies have been busy assisting clients in finding the perfect match for their needs and budget. But many people still have questions about this unchartered territory of ObamaCare. That is where an experienced professional can help, but you must act before the end of the month. Open enrollment ends March 31st for coverage in 2014. According to the website healthcare.gov, as things now stand – a caveat due to the ever-changing world of ObamaCare – people will not be eligible to enroll again until November 15th for coverage next year. Keep in mind that this November date could change so it is important to check with your agent as the time nears to confirm the actual time frame for open enrollment. There are certain situations, however, where consumers can enroll for coverage outside of open enrollment. These socalled trigger events include. but are not limited to, the following: • Loss of eligibility for other coverage (voluntarily or involuntarily leaving your job, exhaustion of COBRA coverage, a divorce or legal separation, or becoming ineligible for dependent status). It is important to note that the loss of eligibility for coverage due to non-payment of premiums is not considered a trigger event. • Marriage and birth of or adoption of a child. • Moving outside of your health plan service area • Losing eligibility for Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program Your agent can help you determine
what life-changing event can result in qualification for a special enrollment opportunity in the Marketplace. Consulting an agent will also help you determine whether or not you qualify for advanced premium tax credits. STAND DOWN
Event brings aid to local homeless veterans. By Colin Anderson.
During the event our area’s homeless vets will have access to a wide variety of services from necessities such as food and clothing to additional legal and mental health assistance, job counseling and companionship.
THE NATIONAL COALITION for Homeless Veterans (NCHV) estimates there are more than one hundred thousand vets currently living on the streets and in shelters. To help bring attention to this issue and to benefit these men and women, the NCHV partners with communities across the country in hosting veteran stand down days. Coeur d’Alene will be hosting such an event on May 10th at the Kootenai County Fairgrounds. So what is a Stand Down? The term ‘stand down’ goes back to the Vietnam War. Troops that had seen combat or were returning from combat were sent to a secure place where they could shower, get clean clothes, have a hot meal, get their letters from home and have access to medical and dental care. Another important aspect of the stand down was the camaraderie of being alongside fellow soldiers in a non-combat situation. With a little time spent at the stand down, commanders saw renewed spirit, health, and well-being amongst their troops.
NCHV is now taking that concept and implementing it within our homeless veteran population. During the event our areas homeless vets will have access to a wide variety of services from necessities such as food and clothing to additional legal and mental health assistance, job counseling and companionship. Since 1988 the program has seen tremendous success, primarily because it brings each of these services to one location making it much more accessible for homeless veterans. Many vets have a difficult time readjusting to civilian life as the services are sometimes loosely structured and vets have to go to several different agencies for assistance. During the upcoming Stand Down they will have access to all in a comfortable, safe, and convenient setting. In 2010, 190 independent stand down events helped 52,000 veterans and their families. 27,000 volunteers assisted across the country and now you have an opportunity to help some of our community’s most vulnerable. Volunteers are still needed for the 2014 North Idaho Veterans Stand Down. The event is May 10, 2014 from 8am2pm at the Kootenai County Fair Grounds. Anyone wishing to volunteer should register online at kootenaiunitedway.org. For more information contact Eric Swanbeck with St. Vincent de Paul at 208.704.0548. If you are unable to attend, there will be an additional ‘Stand Down’ event happening in Sandpoint on June 14th. For location and additional information contact John Davis or Andy Rogers at 509.462.2500. Volunteers are needed in everything from helping serve food and directing traffic, to offering professional assistance to vets attending the stand down. These events have helped change lives by giving renewed hope to those that sacrificed so much for our freedom. Stand Downs are not a ‘Handout’ but a ‘Hand-up’ event where homeless veterans are given access to the tools they need to live a great and fulfilling life. North Idaho is filled with caring people and this is one more opportunity to show we truly care about our community and those who call it home.

PETS AND ALLERGIES
Educate yourself on symptoms and treatment. By Dr. Dawn Mehra, North Idaho Animal Hospital, Sandpoint.
QUESTION: HOW OFTEN SHOULD A DOG LICK ITS FEET? a. never b. a few times per day c. whenever they are laying down d. most of their waking hours I found myself asking this question when one of my dog’s occasional foot licking had become frequent, to the point of annoying! Foot and belly licking, ear scratching and head shaking are common sights if you own a pet; however, if your pet is licking its feet more than 1-2 times per day, there is a good chance that a deeper issue is at hand. Human allergies show up as runny noses, red, watery eyes, and abdominal bloating and gas. Dogs and cats on the other hand, get itchy, inflamed skin manifested by licking, chewing, scratching, and rubbing those ears on your clean carpet. As with humans, pets can have year-round allergies. It’s important to determine whether they are environmental or food-related, because often they present with similar signs. There are subtle patterns and clues that your veterinarian looks for to help them decide the first step for diagnosis and treatment.
By the time they are examined by their veterinarian, many allergic pets have more going on than just the simple allergic reaction. That frequent foot licking keeps moisture between warm toes and creates the perfect environment for bacteria and yeast to multiply like crazy! A similar process happens in those deep, dark, warm ear canals when the skin becomes inflamed from an allergic reaction. This means that skin infections are usually the first thing to get under control when starting an allergy treatment because infections alone create their own discomfort. It is important to know that sometimes trial treatments are required to rule out (or in) a certain form of allergy. There are also underlying diseases that can potentiate skin disorders, making them resistant to treatment. Therefore other seemingly unrelated tests may be recommended to ensure you aren’t fighting a losing battle. Allergic skin diseases can be frustrating and take time to treat before results are seen. Pet owners should not lose heart! As long as they are patient and committed to treating their itchy and painful pet, positive results will be achieved.
ALLERGIES IN PETS EVEN THOUGH YOUR DOG or cat cannot talk he/she generally tends to “act normal”. They won’t tell you it’s uncomfortable until pretty late in the disease process. That is because pack mentality is genetically wired in our companion animal friends. Displaying weakness to the head chief (their provider) could get them sent to the shelter! So look between those toes, down in the ears, and while you may miss something subtle, an obvious problem will jump out at you and let you know your brave pet has been suffering quietly, waiting for relief. Do remember those ear canals are deep and can only be fully visualized with an otoscope, so there may be a problem you can’t see. So if your friend is scratching more frequently than normal, it is better to be safe than sorry. Have your pet examined by his/her veterinarian. The longer the problem is present, the longer treatment will have to be. So, the next time your dogs’ incessant licking makes you crazy, think about how you feel when someone tells you to strop scratching that giant mosquito bite and get him/her examined right away!
