Spring Bass Fishing

and the Senko

Article by Dan Howard

I

f you are a bass fisherman like me, you are anxiously awaiting for the water to warm up a bit and the bass to start working their way from their deep winter haunts to the shallows to spawn. Bass should be catchable in the upcoming weeks with the spawn starting in late May continuing through the end of June. If you have ever sight fished for bass during the spawn, you know what I am talking about. Some of the best bass fishing I have ever experienced occurs annually during this period. A couple of years ago I used various bait types for bass during this period and while I had great success, I did not know what I was missing until I was introduced to the Senko. The Senko was introduced to the bass fishing world several years ago by Gary Yamamoto of Yamamoto Bait company. Senkos are very good baits. The bait looks like a fat plastic night crawler. They are heavily packed with salt and other secret ingredients that cause the bait to sink rapidly. The sinking rate of these baits is really unsurpassed by any of the knockoffs (stick baits) you may find. The sinking rate is what causes the bait to have its incredible “life-like” action. Watching the bait as it sinks you will discover that it quivers and wobbles as it descends. The fish can’t resist it. Until you see this for yourself, you really won’t believe it, but it is true. The best part of fishing with Senkos is that the fisherman really does not need to do anything when fishing with one. The bait does all of the work. Most fishermen believe that they must retrieve a bait and add some sort of jigging or shaking action in order to entice the fish to bite. The secret of the Senko is to do nothing. Just let it sink and then sit on the bottom. Retrieve it only when you have let it sit for a while. A while can be as short as 10 to 15 seconds or as long as a couple of minutes. If there is a fish in the area, believe me they are aware of the bait and will probably bite it if you have the patience to allow them to do so. Look for your bait to begin to swim away from its resting point or a sudden twitch of the line. It is not uncommon to spot a bass moving away from the area you have placed your bait just to realize moments later that it has your bait in its mouth. Exciting fishing! I like to use braided line with a monofilimaent leader. If you use Fireline Crystal (it is white), you can easily see your line and use it as a strike indicator (don’t forget to have a good pair of polarized sun glasses). I like to flip the bait into likely areas that bass might use to spawn. A gentle entry is helpful and that is why I like flipping. The bait can be rigged Texas style except you probably don’t want to use a weight. That will distract from the natural action. It can also be rigged “wacky style”. Wacky rigging places the hook in the center of the bait, again with no weight. Rigged this way, the bait will do its work while sinking and resting on the bottom as described above. In addition, when you retrieve the bait, a couple of quick pulls will lift the bait a couple of feet off the bottom and the ends will swing side to side wildly. Then the bait will stabilize and again sift its way back to the bottom with its classic “life like” wobble and shaking action. This rigging is probably the most popular method for this reason and it allow you to cover water all the way back to the boat. They can be rigged Carolina style. The bait can also be weighted in the traditional Texas style or a weight can be pinned into one end. Each rigging applies it own unique action to the bait, however, I have found that allowing the bait to do all of the work with no weight added to be the best way to fish this bait.

Brought to you by

Senkos are great baits, but they are also expensive baits. A package of 8 or 10 can cost $8. Because they are so heavily laden with salt and sand they deteriorate rather quickly. It is not uncommon to lose or damage a bait each time you catch a fish. The alternative is to use the knockoffs, (stick baits). Stick baits look like Senkos, but they usually do not have the high salt and sand content. This is good, because they last much longer. This is bad, because you loose action in the bait. I have found that the trade off not to be that significant, however. It takes longer for stick baits to sink to the bottom and this sometimes makes a difference. If you are fishing a tournament, you may want to make sure you have some of the original Senkos on board. There is a definite difference and sometimes it may mean the difference in the number of bites you get. After being introduced to the Senko, my spring fishing experience has never been the same. I look forward to this time of year just to fish this bait. I found myself seldom switching back to my standby baits. There really is no reason. Fish love to bite this bait and fishing with them adds a certain excitement to the process for me. Why use other baits when this one works so well and is so much fun to fish?

What We Do:

Home Checks • Handyman Services • Snow Removal Yard Maintenance • Housekeeping

For some reason the bait loses it charm near the end of July. Sure bass will occasionally bite them, but other baits seem to be more effective from that point in the year onward.

“No job to big or to small.” DSS Home Preservation Services are unparalleled and unmatched. Backed by over 30 years of experience, we offer one call connivence. Whatever your needs, DSS will deliver.

Please practice catch and release, especially during the spawning period. Let the fish spawn to allow the fishery to continue to be great for all of us who love fishing. Return them quickly and in the same location. Harvest fish after the spawn. Remember, there are no bass hatcheries in Idaho replacing the fish we harvest so we really do play an important part in the management of the bass fisheries.

BEST OF SANDPOINT 2012

Think Local. Buy Local. Deal it Local.

Best of Sandpoint 2012 WHY BUY LOCALLY OWNED?

T

here are many well-documented benefits to our communities and to each of us to choosing local, independently owned businesses. We realize it is not always possible to buy what you need locally and so merely ask you to Think Local FIRST! 10 Reasons to Think Local - Buy Local – Deal it Local! 1. Buying local means supporting yourself. Studies have shown that when you buy from an independent, locally owned business, significantly more of your money is used to make purchases from other local businesses. 2. Support community groups. Non-profit organizations receive an average 250% more support from smaller business owners than they do from large businesses. 3. Keep our community unique. Where we shop, where we eat and have fun—all of it makes our community home. Our one-of-a-kind businesses are an integral part of the distinctive character of this place. 4. Reduce environmental impact. Locally owned businesses make more local purchases requiring less transportation. This generally means contributing less to sprawl, congestion, habitat loss and pollution. 5. Create more good jobs. Small local businesses are the largest employer nationally and in our community, provide the most jobs to residents. 6. Get better service. Local businesses often hire people with a better understanding of the products they are selling and take more time to get to know customers. 7. Invest in community. Local businesses are owned by people who live in this community, are less likely to leave, and are more invested in the community’s future. 8. Put your taxes to good use. Local businesses require comparatively little infrastructure investment and make more efficient use of public services as compared to nationally owned stores entering the community. 9. Buy what you want, not what someone wants you to buy. A marketplace of tens of thousands of small businesses is the best way to ensure innovation and low prices over the long-term; guaranteeing a much broader range of product choices. 10. Encourage local prosperity. A growing body of economic research shows that in an increasingly homogenized world, entrepreneurs and skilled workers are more likely to invest and settle in communities that preserve their one-of-a-kind businesses and distinctive character.

HEALTHY LIVING

Exercise and Proper Diet INDISPENSABLE INGREDIENTS OF FITNESS AND HEALTHY LIVING

F

or the past several years, there is hullabaloo on the need to be slim and sexy. Grocery shelves are filled with several food supplements and other products that promise certain health and wellness benefits. Home TV shopping channels also offer everything from slimming tea to herbal soap to ‘instant abs’ exercise gadgets. Gyms across the country are fast gaining members who are willing to sweat it out just to burn excess calories from mindless munching and eating. There is also an increasing number of vegetarianism and raw food diet converts who vow to trade juicy hamburgers for fresh vegetables and fruits. People who are stressed out dream of luxurious spa treatments, Thai and Swedish massages, and detoxification diets. All of a sudden, there’s the need to attain fitness and healthy living. This desire can be attributed to man’s realization that the world he is living in is too polluted and toxic. Fitness and healthy living seems to be man’s only hope in staying sane and sound in this otherwise hostile world. If one wishes to achieve fitness and healthy living, he should go for ‘holistic’ approach. A person who wants to have superfit body goes to the gym a lot and sticks to rigorous exercise routines. There’s nothing seemingly wrong with this but he should also see to it he is eating the right kinds of food. It is not enough to be physically fit outside; one has to strive to be internally and externally healthy. Body builders have to follow specific diets appropriate for his physical needs. It is a must to consult personal trainers who can prescribe a proper workout routine and the corresponding diet needed for such routine. Furthermore, people with weight problems should not only focus on improving their diet. Overweight and obese people also need to regularly exercise. One sure way to improve one’s

health condition is through exercising and eating wisely. A person should consider these two key aspects as a two-in-one package.

Fitness and healthy living cannot be attained without the exercise of one’s will. An overweight person cannot be fit and healthy just be watching TV all day and expecting to wake up slim the next morning. Fitness and healthy living requires a lot of effort and involves many decision-making opportunities. One must be really determined to improve his diet and religiously follow exercise routines to be able to resist temptations that may go along the way. Sometimes, it is too tempting to pig out a little more often and to just watch movies at home instead of exercising and eating good food. But if a person firmly decided to be slim and sexy, he should be willing to let go of life’s needless pleasures.

Neurofeedback is an alternative natural therapy that is non-invasive, non-pharmaceutical, and requires almost no effort on the part of the trainee. Also known as EEG Biofeedback It trains brainwaves to find and permanently utilize more efficient neural pathways. In doing so the brain is taught to get “in the zone” and function at peak performance levels. Since the brain is our master regulator, quality of life is improved in a variety of ways. Studies have shown statistically significant improvement in pain, sleep, depression, anxiety, panic attacks, flashbacks, nightmares, seizures, migraines, memory loss. Evidence also supports improvements in behaviors associated with attentiveness, impulsivity, resistance, distractibility, even IQ is often improved. UCLA studies show that, coupled with Rehab, Counseling, or a 12 step program Neurofeedback training can reduce the incidence of addiction relapse by up to 77%. Under a Doctor’s supervision some people are able to reduce or eliminate the need for certain medications. Neurofeedback trains the brain to improve mental focus, peak performance, and quality of life for students, athletes, professionals, seniors, and anyone who wants to reduce their stress, think more clearly, and perform better in their daily lives. SENIOR FOCUS

Retirement Communities are Key to Living Well BROUGHT TO YOU BY THE BRIDGE AT SANDPOINT

T

oday, growing older doesn’t necessarily mean slowing down your life. In fact, just the opposite is true, as thousands of seniors have already discovered how to enjoy their “golden years” with vigor and style. Not content with sitting in front of the television, today’s senior citizens are swimming with dolphins, learning a new art form and even plunging from a plane in their first skydive. What is the key to their happiness and well-being? According to a recent study, it could be living in a retirement community. According to a University of Michigan study, people who live in retirement communities are more satisfied with their daily lives and are more likely to be happy than their contemporaries who remain in their own homes. Residents of these communities also are more likely to say their health is better today than it was two years ago, the study concluded. Many retirement communities not only give seniors a place to share common interests, but also provide unique opportunities to try new hobbies and experiences. For instance, the Bridge at Sandpoint plans activities and excursions for their residents. Creative expression also is encouraged at the Bridge at Sandpoint with crafts. Assisted living is an excellent choice if the senior in your life could use a little extra help with daily activities in order to continue enjoying an active lifestyle. Assisted living at the Bridge at Sandpoint includes housing, support services and

healthcare as needed. Residence will experience continued independence with assistance customized to meet their needs, keeping them active and involved. An environment and lifestyle – designed with input of a resident’s healthcare provider – is tailored to their needs to promote continued health and longevity. No more worries about repairs, cooking, cleaning or other tedious chores. Now, it’s simple for residents to invite friends or family to their home - kept tidy with regular housekeeping. Residents can make them a cup of coffee in their personal kitchenette or invite them to dinner in the community’s elegant dining room. There are even rooms available to host their regular card-playing or craft group. Residents will find many friends and activities waiting just outside their door. They can enjoy the community’s hair salon, fitness facilities, library and a variety of relaxing sitting areas. Transportation services make seeing family, neighbors, old friends and trusted doctors easy again. Seniors can also go shopping, attend religious services and participate in other outings, safely. Give the Bridge at Sandpoint a call today at 208.263.1524 to schedule a personal visit and visit TheBridgeAtSandpoint.com for more information.

HAPPY EASTER

Happy Easter! EASTER CELEBRATIONS AROUND THE WORLD

A

s a butterfly soared overhead, one caterpillar said to the other, “You’ll never get me up in one of those things.” Yet for every caterpillar the time comes when the urge to eat and grow subsides and he instinctively begins to form a chrysalis around himself. The chrysalis hardens and you’d think for all the world that the caterpillar is dead. But one spring morning the life inside the chrysalis begins to writhe, the top cracks open, and a beautifully-formed butterfly emerges. For hours it will stand stretching and drying its wings, moving them slowly up and down, up and down. And then, before you know it, the butterfly glides aloft, effortlessly riding the currents of the air. Somehow, the miracle of the butterfly never loses its fascination for us. Perhaps because the butterfly is a living parable of the promise of resurrection. Around the world millions of people celebrate Easter, a celebration that reminds us that Jesus’ resurrection from the grave is God’s proof to us that death is not the end. The empty tomb and Jesus’ Spirit within us testify that Easter morning is God’s triumph over death. And ultimately, Jesus promised, God will raise from the dead us who believe in His Son. Here’s a window into some of the culture and traditions around the world that take place every Easter season: ARGENTINA Easter Sunday in Argentina consists of consuming eggs as well as the special Easter cake, Rosca de Pascua. People exchange eggs not only with their family, but also with friends and colleagues and the day culminates in attending mass followed by a big family gathering involving lots of food, often a huge barbecue. GREECE On Good Friday in Athens, a replica of Christ’s tomb is carried through town. People flock to churches at midnight on Saturday carrying unlit candles that they light from the Holy Flame and walk through town enjoying a glorious display of

fireworks, bells and jubilation. Easter Sunday’s menu features spit-fire roast lamb and lots of colored eggs. ITALY While Easter mass will be held in every church in Italy, the biggest and most popular mass is held by the Pope at St. Peter’s Basilica. On Good Friday, the Pope celebrates the Via Crucis or Stations of the Cross in Rome near the Colosseum. A huge cross with burning torches lights the sky as the stations of the cross are described in several languages. At the end, the Pope gives a blessing. SCOTLAND Easter in Scotland is a mostly laid back event featuring traditional things like attending mass and having a big meal, but Scots also add a bit of fun for the kids - after eggs are boiled and painted in all kinds of colors and designs, they’re taken to park hills for rolling on Easter Sunday. The event symbolizes the rolling away of stones on Jesus’ tomb, thereby assisting in His resurrection. SEVILLE, SPAIN Seville in Andalucia is the most famed Spanish region for Easter celebrations. It has 52 different religious brotherhoods whose members parade through the streets for the entire Holy Week manifesting the crucifixion. Processions continue for almost 24 hours culminating in the jubilation of the resurrection which is observed by floats covered in flowers, dancing in the streets and traditional sweet cakes. SWEDEN Humour-filled celebrations commence on Easter Saturday with children dressing up as good witches and giving out letters and cards in return for eggs, sweets and coins. On Easter Sunday, food takes centre stage where, in typically Nordic fashion, the

FRANCE Church bells ring every day of the year except for the three days of Easter. Legend has it that the bells stop ringing because they’ve made a trip to Rome in order to be blessed. On Easter Sunday, the bells make their return and tour the country sprinkling chocolate eggs, chickens and rabbits in every garden. After midday, children head to the gardens to find the hidden treasures left by the bells. The day includes a hearty meal, normally consisting of lamb, the Easter dish of choice. BRAZIL Brazil has the largest Catholic population in the world. Holy Week - Semana Santa in Portuguese - is observed throughout the country with processions and rituals similar to those of other Catholic countries, yet made unique by the specific context in which they happen. Holy Week is held from 9 to 12 April, is the most important religious event in Brazil. The processions and masses occur in virtually all cities. In some of these events become diversified attractions, but that did not stop having a religious nature. While many take the opportunity for a journey of pleasure and relaxation, others prefer to accompany processions and masses performed in some Brazilian cities.

OUTDOOR EXPERIENCE

Fly Fishing Guides WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN HIRING A GUIDE

F

ly fishing has grown in popularity over the years to the point it is at now – an almost obsession for many avid outdoorsmen (and women!). When looking for a guide to fly fishing, you need to find one that will cover both the basics along with the advanced techniques. There is no one way to fly fish right or wrong. It takes practice and persistence, but you will find an amazing recreational value when you take up this sport.

Many lodges will offer up the services of their own fishing guides when you book a cabin or vacation with them. These fly fishing guides are very valuable resources when you are on a fly fishing trip. These guides are included in the price of your stay, and they often know certain nuances of the area that no one else can offer you. You should definitely take advantage of any fly fishing guide that your lodge offers you.

Fly fishing isn’t a complicated sport, but if you can find an expert to guide you along the way, you will become a better angler. Looking for a fly fishing guide can be a huge undertaking as there are all kinds of informational books and websites on the market that can help you along the way. A good guide to fly fishing is one that will tell you about the most basic casting maneuvers, how to pick out a fly rod, and where to look for the best fish. A good guide will teach you rather than lead you. When you learn how to do things, you will become a better sportsman (er, person). In the sport of fly fishing, the word “guide” can have a double meaning. You can look for a printed guide to teach you how to fly fish, or you can hire a guide, who is a person, to show you the best places to fish in. When hiring a competent fly fishing guide, you need to consider his or her qualifications. What type of experience do they have on those particular waters? How familiar are they with the area? Are they able to offer you tips and tricks on how to find the biggest fish?

A printed guide to fly fishing, as we’ve said, will offer you information about even the most basic of techniques. They can also guide you towards the best fly fishing destinations to make any trip you take a success. Whether you’re looking for a fly fishing guide who is a person or a printed fly fishing guide, you’ll need to consider your options before buying or booking. Fly fishing guides can mean the difference between a good trip and a great trip!

Sandpoint EggFest BBQ Eggstravaganza WHAT IS AN EGGFEST?

A

n EggFest is a public BBQ event featuring The Big Green Egg barbeque, smoker and grill where Big Green Egg enthusiasts can get together to share with the public some of the incredible foods that can be cooked on this unique ceramic cooker. In other words it’s a great excuse to have a barbeque. EggFests are held all across the country and some people travel many miles to participate in the event or just taste the food. If you don’t know someone who owns a big green egg then undoubtedly you have heard about this unique cooker made of ceramic and in the shape of an egg. The big green egg can sear a steak at 700 degrees or slow cook a brisket for 20 hours. It uses natural lump charcoal that burns clean with little ash and gives food that old school taste that’s been lost in the era of metal grills, for added smoke flavor woodchips can be added. North Idaho Spas has been selling big green eggs in Sandpoint for over 10 years. They are holding the first ever Sandpoint EggFest Saturday April 14th at the Bonner County Fairgrounds; the same time and place as the PBCA Home Show. The popularity and loyalty of big green egg owners makes this a perfect time to hold an EggFest. 7 cooks will be manning their eggs from 9am to 3pm cooking everything from ribs, pulled pork, beer butt chicken, flank steak and cedar plank salmon to grilled pineapple, veggies and even cinnamon rolls. Everybody is welcome to come and taste the food and talk to the cooks. North Idaho Spas hopes this will be annual event and grow in years to come. Tickets go on sale after spring break. The Drawing will be on Sunday May 20th at 2nd Ave Pizza at 12pm. Brief History of the Mustang In 1965 the Ford Mustang debuted as a simple sports car powered by a 170 cid six cylinder with a pair of V8’s as options. Originally named for the fighter plane, the P-51 Mustang and later the horse Mustang became the emblem. Buyers loved its low price, long hood, short trunk styling and its many options and Ford loved its high volume sales. In mid 1964, Ford introduced the sporty 2+2 fastback body style to go along with the hardtop coupe and convertible. For those that wanted more, the legendary Carroll Shelby and Ford collaborated to produce the Shelby GT-350. This was a fastback specially tuned by Shelby. The 289 V8 produced 306bhp in street tune and around 360bhp in special GT-350R race tune. These Shelby’s had no back seat, were only available in white and were fully race ready.

Pets Can Greatly Improve Your Health A HEALTHY INVESTMENT FOR LONG TERM HAPPINESS

H

aving a pet is one of the healthiest investments you can make to your long-term health and happiness. We know that having a pet enriches our lives, and scientific studies in the last decade, have clearly shown how companion animals benefit both our bodies and our minds. Apart from lazy days in the sun, walking, fetching, and guaranteed smiles throughout the day, pets provide health benefits that extend far into the body and mind, such as lower blood pressure, heart rate, anxiety level as well as providing pet owners with both consistent behavior and offering unconditional love and affection. Pets in return, respond well to stability and the love and affection pet owners lavish upon them. Pets have been known to improve the lives of pet owners, significantly benefiting health, not only for the young and families, but also for the elderly. Pets may help elderly owners live longer, healthier and ultimately, more enjoyable lives. The Journal of the American Geriatrics Society published an article in May 1999 showing how independently living seniors with pets, tend to have better physical strength and overall mental health and wellbeing than seniors that do not have pets. They are more active, generally happier, cope better with stress and have significantly lower blood pressure. Many of the benefits of having a pet are less tangible. Pets allow for physical contact and offer consistent companionship, as well as unconditional love. They act as a support system for older people without homes or families or close friends. People with pets generally remain more stable emotionally during crises than people without pets. Pets also offer protection socially from isolation, separation anxiety for people in nursing homes, and for people who don’t have as much opportunity to interact with other people.

HOME AND GARDEN

What’s in a Seed? GARDENING SEASON IS APPROACHING FAST

A

s gardening season fast approaches, seed buying season is upon us and that can create great confusion. Do you want organic seeds, heirloom seeds, or hybrids seeds? That doesn’t sound like such a tough choice; but when you really start to look, the answers aren’t so clean cut. Heirloom seeds are the traditional seeds that have been planted for generations. They are saved from crops and then replanted to produce more seed. They are never GMO but can be either organic or non-organic. Organic seeds can be heirloom or hybrids and also should never be GMO. Hybrids are a cross of seeds from plants that are bred for certain characteristics such as disease resistance or greater production but can be GMO. An organic hybrid can be a pretty good option for those wanting to avoid GMO’s and also want good garden production. However, many will argue that when you cross your plants to increase disease resistance or yield, you give up flavor and nutrition in the process. Heirloom seeds are what nature originally produced and usually do provide the best overall flavor and nutrition. Yet, yields and disease resistance can be lower. A garden purest will almost certainly prefer organic heirloom seeds. These provide the best flavor and nutrition, produced without any potentially harmful herbicides or pesticides, and contain no GMO’s. There is very little doubt that this type of seed will produce the best tasting and safest option for your gardening.

Ponderay Garden Center recently received National Recognition and Honors by being named as one of the Top 100 Revolutionary Garden Centers in the United States!

Of course, with all that said, the best seed for any garden, is the one that will actually produce a good crop in our short North Idaho growing season. Regardless of what type of seed you prefer, please read the labels carefully and look for the numbers of days to maturity. Tomatoes for example come in a huge range of maturity dates ranging from 55 to 90 days. You may think that a 90 day tomato will work just fine. After all, we have June, July, and August to grow. However, the days to maturity usually indicates the number of growing days needed, not the number of calendar days needed. So, a 75 degree day in June that cools down to 40 during the night is really only half a growing day since many crops slow down their growth as the temperature falls. So, a June that is sunny everyday may still only be 20 growing days of time since our nights do usually cool down. Most North Idaho gardeners know that they have very little chance of maturing a 90 day tomato unless they use season extending tactics. So, decide on your style of seed, pick varieties that offer the shortest maturity dates whenever possible, and then seek good gardening advice and tips from one of our area’s fine independent garden centers. All Season’s in Kootenai, Moose Valley in Naples, Florascape in Cocollala, or Ponderay Garden Center in Ponderay all have excellently trained staff’s that are well versed in North Idaho gardening. Kevin Mansoor is an Idaho State Certified Nursery Professional and the General manager of Ponderay Garden Center. He may be reached for questions of comments on his cell phone at 208.304.3552 or via email at kevin@ponderaygarden.com.

ACTIVITIES AND FUN

FRUIT THIEVES A fruit farmer hired two new workers for his fields, but before he sent them out for the day’s work, he told them he had just one rule: don’t steal any fruit. The two agreed to obey the rule. After the day was over, the two workers came in to report to the farmer. He asked them if they had stolen any fruit, and immediately their conscience forced them to tell the truth.

farmer promptly told him that as part of his punishment, he would have to stuff each cherry up his nose. The thief was upset about this, but he knew he had done wrong, so he slowly began to push the cherries up his nose one by one. As he was working on the third cherry, he began to laugh hysterically. The farmer asked him, “What’s so funny?” The thief replied, “The other guy is out there picking watermelons!”

“Yes, we did. We ate some when we got hungry,” they said.

JUST LOOKING AROUND

The farmer replied, “Okay, here is your punishment. I want each of you to go pick ten of your favorite fruit and come back to me.”

A blind man walks into a store with his seeing eye dog.

The men couldn’t believe their ears. This seemed more like a reward than a punishment! After fifteen minutes, the first thief came back with ten cherries. The

All of a sudden, he picks up the leash and begins swinging the dog over his head. The manager runs up to the man and asks, “What are you doing?!” The blind man replies, “Just looking around.”
