Fly Fishing Crappie in the Summertime Article by Dan Howard
M
ost fishermen in Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho at one time or another have fished for Crappie. They can be found in most of the lakes and sloughs here. Crappie are a social fish and are often found in schools, so when you locate them and are using the correct bait and presentation, catching them can be fast and furious. They are larger than most of the other panfish that they share water with, so they are highly sought after. They are very tasty and most fish 7 inches or larger offer enough of a fillet to make it worth the time it takes to clean them.
Traditional fishing methods include casting and working a jig back to you, casting a float with a jig or bait dangled below and waiting for the float to disappear, or casting and retrieving small spinners or crank baits of some kind. All of these methods have merit and often produce abundant catches. If you are bored with all of this, you are a fly fisherman, or would like to try fly fishing, fly fishing for crappie is definitely worth your time. For first time fly fishermen, this is an excellent way to learn and practice the skills needed to master the fly rod while having one heck of a good time. Crappie are a little less wary and not quite as finicky as a trout, so it is easier to fool them into biting and since they are a schooling fish. Once you find them the action is often unbelievable. I usually fish with dry flies or small poppers since that is more of a visual fishing method. I have caught them on sinking flies, but honestly I have not spent much time with that method since fishing on the surface is so much fun. Since lakes and sloughs are the habitat of choice for crappie, a boat is a primary tool. A boat will provide a means to access the deep edges of weed lines where crappie are often found in summer. If you have a boat where you can stand and fish you have the best tool for this job. Some boat designs are better for fly fishing than others. A bass boat is the perfect platform for fly fishing since the deck is relatively clear of obstructions so casting obstacles are at a minimum and there are two casting platforms. Pontoon air boats and float tubes are made for fly fishing so they also have a bit of an advantage over other craft. If you don’t have one of these boats, just about any other craft will work especially if there is a free and open deck to cast from. Fly fishing requires back casting and obstructions can take the fun out of it quickly. Fishing from shore is also an option and can be just as fun and productive, however, public access to lake shore is limited and it may be difficult to find enough shoreline.

I find that the morning and evening fishing is usually very productive. I like to move along the outside edge of the weed line or edge of lilly pads looking for slight movement of the water. Crappie move just under the surface looking for food and slightly disturb the surface as they swim. This disturbance looks more like a bug skimming on the surface than a trout feeding. Once I have located this disturbance, I cast a popper or dry fly to the fish. Crappie take the flies and poppers just like a trout. If the fly is not taken immediately, I will wait until the circles disappear and then I will twitch the fly slightly. If the fish are there, they will usually bite and the fight is on. Awesome! Fishing during bright daylight will be a bit more challenging. Crappie will still be in or near the edge of the weed line or lilly pads. The fish will likely be stationary under the lilly pads or other places that offer shade. Make sure you are wearing polarized sun glasses. You should be able to see the fish if you look closely. If you are not seeing fish, you may need to move your boat into the cover and spook a few fish to see if they are there. Once you have established where they are hiding, fishing can begin. For some reason, I find that I catch larger crappie when fly fishing. I am guessing that the presentation is more natural so the larger and smarter fish are more likely to take them. Crappie are probably not the only fish you will catch while fishing with flies. Bass and other panfish are also likely to take your baits. Give fly fishing for crappie a try. It can be a BLAST!

owadays, many people search online for services instead of reaching for the phone book. To increase your online exposure your pages should include your street address, zip code, phone number, fivedigit zip code and make sure to list your business within local business directories.

Submitting To Directories Links from directories are some of the most valuable links you can get. Note: Directories are not the same as search engines. A link from a directory will help your search engine ranking. There are thousands of online directories, but some are more significant than others. In addition to directories such as the Open Directory Project, some of the most important search engines such as Yahoo and Google have directories of their own. Some of the greatest advantages of submitting your site to directories are you get: • One-way links. Remember, one-way links are more valuable than reciprocal links. • Potentially qualified clients repeatedly see your listing. Obtaining links from directories drive an increasing amount of traffic to your site. In addition, you are improving your ranking within search engines such as Google and Yahoo. Submit Your Site to Industry Sites and Specialized Directories Because a link from a relevant site is more important than one from an irrelevant site, links from industry sites and specialized directories are highly valuable. If your business is a member of professional associations, ask for a link to your site. The more links you obtain from related websites, the more likely your site will be considered an authority site. Searching online you will find directories focused on your particular industry such as business coaching, accounting, retail and such. HEALTHY LIVING
Healthy Living A DEFINITION THAT IS DIFFERENT FOR EVERYONE
T
he definition of healthy living is different for each and every person, but there are two things that most agree on. You have to learn to eat good foods that nourish your body and you have to have some sort of exercise in your day to day life. These things can be harder than people think when they set off on a new plan for a better life, and that is why it is sometimes smart to go ahead one step at a time until you have gotten where you want to be with your lifestyle habits and your health. Diet modification is a great start when moving towards healthy living. This is something that you have to be careful with, however, as there is a lot of bad advice out there. If you aren’t sure which way to turn, talk with your doctor about changing your diet for healthy living and get recommendations from them. They will probably know the name of a good nutritionist that can get you going on the right track. These people can show you what you should be eating, what to avoid and what you can have in moderation. A nutritionist should have a college degree, so don’t be afraid to ask them about their training.
Other parts of healthy living might be things you have to quit doing. This might mean you have to find a way to stop smoking and you may have to alter or lower your intake of alcohol. You may have more trouble with these than anything else that you do. What you should do is visit with your doctor again, only this time tell them you want help with quitting or cutting back. There is a lot of emphasis on healthy living these days, and most doctors will be glad to help you in your quest, even if they feel that they have to refer you to someone else. It’ll be hard to change all of these things, but once you get going, you will enjoy your results too much to turn back to life before you found healthy habits.
If you aren’t sure about exercise in regards to healthy living, know that any type of movement is good for you. If you are not someone who moves around a lot, you can get some great benefits from just walking around the block. After a while, you may want to add more to your routine, and that is when a gym is a great idea. You should hire a personal trainer to help you find the things that work best for you in your quest for healthy living. Remember, not all personal trainers are good. If someone seems off or you don’t like what they are doing, do yourself a favor and move on to the next one.

SENIOR FOCUS
Getting Help With Your Budget BROUGHT TO YOU BY THE BRIDGE AT SANDPOINT
O
ne of the adjustments that is part of life once you end your working years is adjusting to living on a different kind of income. You get used to that regular paycheck over the life of your careers in the working world and while we may be very happy to leave the stresses of the workaday life, that paycheck is one part of that world that we may miss when they finally stop. Of course, many senior citizens have some resources going into their senior years such as savings, investments, a retirement program, and, of course, Social Security. But the thing that’s hard to get used is that you are now drawing funds from a limited pool. Whether the amount of your retirement resources is big or small, outside of the income from interest and dividends, you are no longer replenishing those funds. It seems strange to say it but you have to think about how long you can live on those funds. While you would all like to live to 90 or older, from a practical point of view, we don’t want to “outlive our savings” and then become a burden to our children to support as they are working hard to raise and support their young families. So the life of senior citizen means going on some form of budget. And anything we can do to stretch the use of those retirement funds means that they will last longer as we continue to do the right thing for our health with diet and exercise so we can live a long life of a senior citizen. One resource that is worth taking a look at are programs that are geared to helping senior citizens conserve on their limited funds. One such resource is the phenomenon of the “senior discount” which is often offered at restaurants and other retail institutions to help us out. While you may be working to look
young and defeat the influence of age on your health and looks, when it comes to senior citizen discounts, its time to be honest about your age and take advantage of any help that is being offered to stretch your fixed income as much as you can. Public service companies such as your electric, gas or water companies also have programs that you can take advantage of to keep those bills under control. The one thing you want for the sake of the budget is that your bills will stay the same from month to month. But when your gas or electric bill changes a lot because of the influence of the hot summer temperatures or the cold winter months which use a lot of home heating fuel, those bills can get pretty erratic. So contact your utility companies and see what they can do for you. One program that is available to everyone is averaging your monthly utility bill. The gas or electric bill can do a quick calculation of your last year’s usage and average that and then bill you that fixed amount each month. In this way, you will know each month exactly what to expect so you don’t have any “surprises” in the mail when the bills come due. Keep your eyes open for ways that the public institutions you use the most work to help out senior citizens. They know that you are on a fixed income and nobody wants to see seniors struggle to make ends meet. Sometimes your local or state government may even have programs to reduce your sales taxes at the grocery store. Take advantage of these plans and don’t let yourself feel bad about it at all. You have worked hard all your life to support others and to be a good citizen. So let society pay you back with whatever help can be offered. You certainly deserve it.

OUTDOOR EXPERIENCE
Develop a Family Sun Care Strategy SIMPLE SUNSCREEN INNOVATIONS TO HELP PROTECT YOUR KIDS FROM THE SUN
A
• Be a Shade Seeker - Duck the sun’s rays the obvious way: Stay in the shade whenever possible! Avoid outdoor activities when the sun’s rays are strongest (10am-2pm).
nyone who has ever taken kids to the beach knows that it’s fun for the kids, but can sometimes be a hassle for whoever is in charge. For parents it can mean the constant chore of sunscreen application and reapplication. To curb the sun care battle and make sun protection a routine part of outdoor play, parents can take a few simple steps now to help ensure sun safety all summer long.
Families can enjoy the outdoors while staying safe by having a solid action plan in place that includes cover-up clothing, timely activities and the right sunscreen.
Here are some sun care tips to help create your family’s sun care strategy: • Stage a Cover Up - Wear dark-colored, tightly woven clothing, along with a wide-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses. • Cover All the Bases - It’s easy to overlook spots like your ears, neck, shoulders and the back of your neck, but they need sunscreen, too. So does your scalp, if your child has thin or short hair. • Reapply, Reapply, Reapply - Slap on another coat of sunscreen as needed--and be sure to reapply after swimming, perspiring, vigorous activity or toweling off. • Select Sunscreens that Can Keep Up With Kids - When children are playing in the sun and surf, they have specific sun care needs. Use waterproof sunscreens with SPF 30 or higher, and look for products that are quick and easy to apply to squirmy kids, like COPPERTONE KIDS® CONTINUOUS SPRAY SPF 50. (Keep babies under 6 months of age out of the sun and consult a doctor before applying sunscreen.)

Being strategic about sun exposure combined with proper sunscreen use will help decrease the chance of sunburn and the potential of some types of skin cancer down the road. By planning their sun care strategy in advance, parents can enjoy outdoor family activities such as playing in the waves and watching the sun set.

“The convenience offered through continuous-spray sunscreens is especially helpful in protecting children from the harmful effects of the sun because parents will be more willing to apply and reapply, which is a critical factor in better sun protection,” said Dr. Leffell.

amazed that few potential clients check credit and references. We’re entrusted with considerable financial investments, but no one ever asks about our financial health. We hope that by earning this designation we raise awareness about the questions someone should ask a potential builder.”
In June, Scott Schriber, co-owner of Selle Valley Construction with his wife Barbara, earned the recognition of Registered Master Builder designation by the Idaho Building Contractor’s Association making Scott one of only 18 builders in the entire state.
Selle Valley has earned a reputation for quality, craftsmanship and integrity by approaching each job with the understanding the Selle Valley name will forever be attached to the home. As homes change hands Scott and Barbara reach out to the new owners and make themselves available for questions and offering help and advice about maintenance schedules and best practices. Selle Valley homes also come with a Homeowner’s Manual and Maintenance Schedule.
“Idaho is a state with very little regulation for the building industry. There are no tests, you don’t have to prove you know what you’re doing, and there’s no building department or inspections in the County. The Registered Master Builder program was a way for our company to voluntarily be regulated and held to a higher standard. Building a home is a huge investment and we want our clients and home buyers to have confidence in us and know that we are protecting their investment,” explains Scott. To earn the designation Selle Valley Construction had to meet high standards, including: • Favorable references, obtained independently by the IBCA, from past clients, suppliers, subcontractors, architects, engineers and building officials • A positive credit review • General Liability and Workers’ Compensation Insurance • A written warranty • Community and Industry participation are also taken into consideration
Barbara, who runs the business side of the company, explains, “the construction industry has a bad rap, but I’m always
In the past year Selle Valley has built three homes certified by Northwest Energy Star, with a fourth currently under construction. To earn certification, homes must meet guidelines established by the EPA and have techniques, equipment and materials independently verified. Test results show Selle Valley’s Energy Star homes are 30-47% more efficient than other new homes, and their clients’ electrical bills are supporting that claim, saving hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars per year while maintaining a comfortable, healthy home. “We’re already building to meet these standards so our company invests the few hundred dollars to have them certified. Hopefully, that sticker on the electrical box helps our clients sell the home, should the time come.” If you’re thinking about building a new home or remodeling you can reach Selle Valley at 208.263.1808 or visit their website www.sellevalley.com.

The Love Between Pet Owners and Pets UNCONDITIONAL LOVE FROM PETS
W
e talk to our pets and they listen. They give us unconditional love and await our attention. They amuse us and make us feel good about ourselves. As Samuel Butler famously said, “The great pleasure of a dog is that you may make a fool of yourself with him and not only will he not scold you, but he will make a fool of himself too.” After a hard day’s work, the moment your dog runs to you when you are home wipes off the day’s fatigue. There are innumerable incidents of where a dog saved his owner or a cat woke up her owner when there was a fire in the house. They can understand when you are standing at the door or when you are depressed. Pets fill in that void in our lives that no human relationship can fulfill. Medical research says that seniors who own dogs visit a doctor less than who do not. It is a proven fact that pet owners have lower blood pressure or that the companionship of a pet helps families and people cope with serious illness. Playing with your pet burns up to 250 calories an hour. There are dogs that assist blind people in their daily lives and there are dogs that help police force in their mission to protect people. George Salpiatro, Connecticut lost his vision. He received two-year old Karl, a German shepherd as his assistant dog. As Salpiatro says, “I like to tell people that my opportunity to be equal to others came with four legs and a tail that wags!” But there would probably be fewer people who would own a pet because of the above mentioned reasons. People who own pets simply love their pets and any and every benefit that they get because of the association is just a byproduct. And it is true that once a pet lover always a pet lover.

GOOD NEWS
Sandpoint Local Pays it Forward STARBUCKS IN PONDERAY, IDAHO
S
tarbucks in Ponderay was on a roll recently, with an impromptu “pay it forward” parade of drive-up customers, each paying for the car behind them.
“It usually happens at Christmas time,” says barista Carol McCracken, “when someone asks to pay for the person behind them at the drive up.” In the season of giving, this impromptu offer is always a welcome surprise for the receiver; and sometimes, the original offer produces a pay it-forward ripple effect. “We ask the person who’s getting the free coffee if they, in turn, would like to pay for the person behind them, and it just keeps going. We love it - it’s great fun! And sometimes,” she adds, “ someone will just plop down their extra cash and pay for part of the next order.” The record of 16 participants was unrivalled until recently, when - in a distinctly nonChristmas time of year - a new high of 20 participants was reached. So even when times are financially challenging, or perhaps especially when they are, the fine folk of Sandpoint are always ready to give, and an unexpected gift is the best kind. The generosity of our community is one reason why we all live here.

Anxious to finally get the porch painted, I urged by husband to allow the man that knocked on our door looking for handiwork to do the job. The man happily agreed to paint it for $50. We were thrilled at our good luck of getting our wide porch painted for a measly $50. Minutes later there was a knock at the door. “All done” he said. “Already?” we both said at once. “Yeah, and by the way, it’s a Lexus not a Porsche”.
ADOPTION
A woman has twins and gives them up for adoption. One of them goes to a family in Egypt and is named “Ahmal.” The other goes to a family in Spain; they name him “Juan.” Years later, Juan sends a picture of himself to his birth mother. Upon receiving the picture, she tells her husband that she wishes she also had a picture of Ahmal. Her husband responds, “They’re twins! If you’ve seen Juan, you’ve seen Ahmal.”
CAMPING WORD FIND
JUST BEING PRACTICAL
A man wasn’t feeling well so he went to the doctor. After examining him the doctor took his wife aside, and said, “your husband has a very sensitive heart. I am afraid he’s not going to make it, unless you treat him like a king, which means you are at his every beck and call, 24 hours a day and that he doesn’t have to do anything himself. On the way home the husband asked with a note of concern “what did he say?” “Well”, the lady responded, “he said it looks like you probably won’t make it.”
TO THE DOCTOR
So this old man goes to the doctor and the doctor says, “You’re test results came back and I’m afraid I have some bad news. You have Cancer and you have Alzheimer’s”. The old man says, “That ain’t so bad, at least I don’t have Cancer!”
