HEALTH AND BEAUTY

Top 12 Beauty Tips for 2012 SMART TIPS FOR THE NEW YEAR

1. Instead of shaving over and over, with the hairs coming in darker and thicker each time, try waxing. Waxing to remove hair will result in softer hairs each time and result in permanent hair loss after a few sessions. 2. Drink plenty of water and get eight hours of sleep every day. 3. Good posture can make you look much slimmer. 4. Wearing less makeup makes you look younger. 5. Wearing clothes that are tight make you look heavier. Even a slim girl can bulge over too-tight jeans. 6. Sleeping on your back will prevent many wrinkles and breakouts on your face.

8. Exercise while dieting is a must or your skin will be too large (and saggy) for your smaller body. It is much, much tougher to tighten skin after your body shrinks than as you go. 9. Wearing very high heels too often will give you a masculine, muscular calf instead of a feminine, rounded calf. 10. Wearing a low heel will give you better posture than wearing flat shoes. 11. After washing your face, rinse in cold water (fair-skinned people should use cool instead of cold) to close the pores and tighten the facial muscles. 12. Last but not least, smile often! It’s good for the soul, mind and spirit and most importantly it will make people wonder what your up to!

7. Vitamins and minerals are needed for health and beauty, but more is not always better. Too much Vitamin A or Selenium can cause hair loss.

NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS

New Year’s Resolutions

BY ASHLEY WENDLAND, MS LPC OF SYRINGA PSYCHOTHERAPY

D

o you have trouble sticking to your new year’s goals? A list is a great start, but your goals involve more than a list. Here are some tips for success:

Start with narrowing the list! It should be short enough to remember without looking. Set deadlines and write down all of the reasons it is absolutely necessary to reach the goal. This builds leverage to stay motivated. Now go back to the list and write down everything it will cost you if you don’t follow through. Have you had this resolution before? What are the excuses you used to avoid follow through? Finally, write an action plan for each goal and take some action toward each goal immediately! Even if it’s just a phone call or doing some researc online, set your plan in motion before the day is over. Keep your goals in sight, and don’t stuff them in a drawer. Best of luck! 208.946.5242 www.SyringaPsychotherapy.com

LOCAL BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT

Kokanee Coffee OWNERS JIM AND ANGELA REESE

H

ave you tried a cup of micro-roasted Kokanee Coffee? The newest coffee house in town just opened for business with a uniquely industrial feel that was designed and created by the owners, Jim and Angela Reese. Jim’s whole life has been devoted to the pursuit of art. He has always tried to make our surroundings more pleasing than they naturally were. Their shop reflects Jim’s idea of what a fun coffee shop should look like with his metal art designs and accents. Angela is gifted in the kitchen with her homemade soups and pastries. Jim and Angela are returning locals who grew up in the Pend Oreille valley and are happy to finally be returning to their family and friends after many years of absence. While living in western Washington, their unending search for a perfect cup of coffee drove them to start roasting coffee beans from home to perfect the taste, origin and desired roast level. After numerous failures and some undesirable blends, they developed some flavorful roasts that are sure to please even the most finicky of palates. Kokanee Coffee house currently boasts 5 different micro roasts using fair trade organic beans in their natural gas, hot air roaster which only roasts a 2 pound or less batch each time. This process ensures the essence of the beans, unlike the large quantity bean roasters that most coffee roasters use.

The shop also offers some unique gifts and art by many local artists. Fresh baked goodies and soups are offered daily, Wi-Fi and a comfortable place to gather with family, friends or even a work meeting. They have a nice sized parking lot at the Panhandle Plaza, so look for their daily specials on their website’s blog or Facebook. Their online coffee store will be available soon via www.kokaneecoffee.com.

Scan me with your smart phone to view our website!

We micro roast and blend our organic beans to perfection every time! Our coffee is outstanding and our interior inviting, so come by and give us a try! We are open seven days a week and have plenty of parking. We also offer fresh soup and pastries daily! Visit us on Facebook or our blog @ www.kokaneecoffee.com We post our specials daily!

EUROPES PRO LEAGUE COMES CALLING

T

he old adage “you don’t know what you got until its gone” may just sum up Mike Mitchell’s departure from Sandpoint fittingly. Having come to Sandpoint from the college ranks and now headed to the pro’s over in Europe, Mitchell leaves large shoes to fill not only on the field, but at the school as well, having served the past six years as Head Football Coach and Vice Principal. What started off as a request from a coach in need of offensive game planning for the upcoming season, turned into an offer that Mitchell could not refuse. Approached by the owner of the franchise, Mitchell was offered the Head Coach position of the Zagreb Patriots, a professional team in the Central European Football League. Seeing that this was not only a great opportunity to coach in the pros, but also a chance for him and his wife Gayle to travel overseas.

The possible candidates to replace Mitchell are endless with interest coming in from all over the state including strong interest locally. The shoes will be hard to fill as Mitchell’s teams have had a 91% winning percentage vs. 4A schools over the past six years, 4 league championships and a state championship appearance. His professionalism, leadership and experience will be greatly missed.

They’ll come to you to change your tires, they’ll store those dirty, heavy, winter and summer tires at their place (for free!!), and, if you need a ride home or to work while they’re working on your vehicle, they will give you a ride.

ACTIVITIES AND FUN

LATE FOR SUNDAY SCHOOL

EARTH SCIENCE CLASS

The little boy was late for Sunday school and the superintendent, seeing him slip in, detained him and asked him the reason. The boy shuffled his feet uncertainly for a moment, then blurted out, “I started out to go fishing instead, but my dad wouldn’t let me.”

The teacher of the earth science class was lecturing on map reading. After explaining about latitude, longitude, degrees and minutes the teacher asked, “Suppose I asked you to meet me for lunch at 23 degrees, 4 minutes north latitude and 45 degrees, 15 minutes east longitude...?”

The superintendent beamed broadly. “A wise father,” he said. “He was quite right not to let you go fishing on a Sunday. Did he explain why?” The little boy nodded. “Oh, yes sir. He said there wasn’t enough bait for the two of us.”

PET BILLS While waiting at the veterinarian’s office, I overheard two women chatting about their dogs. “What’s your dog’s name?” asked the first woman. “Well, we used to call her Pork Chop,” answered the second lady. “But after the vet bills we’ve had for her, we now call her Filet Mignon.”

DOG FIGHT A man walks into a bar one day and asks, “Does anyone here own that rottweiler outside?” “Yeah, I do!” a biker says, standing up. “What about it?” “Well, I think my chihuahua just killed him...” “What are you talkin’ about?!” the biker says, disbelievingly. “How could your little runt kill my rottweiler?” “Well, it seems he got stuck in your dog’s throat!”

After a confused silence, a voice volunteered, “I guess you’d be eating alone.”

ILLEGAL TURN A man, in a hurry taking his eight-year-old son to school, made a turn at a red light where it was prohibited. “Uh-oh, I just made an illegal turn!” the man said. “Aw, Dad, it’s okay,” the son said. “The police car right behind us did the same thing.”

TWO ROACHES Two roaches were munching on garbage in an alley when one engages a discussion about a new restaurant. “I was in that new restaurant across the street,” said one. “It’s so clean! The kitchen is spotless, and the floors are gleaming white. There is no dirt anywhere--it’s so sanitary that the whole place shines.” “Please,” said the other roach frowning. “Not while I’m eating!”
