A Message for the New Year FROM SANDPOINT MAYOR, MARSHA OGILVIE Article by Marsha Ogilvie, Mayor of Sandpoint

s I thought about what to write for my New Year’s message, I found myself in a quandary. Among the dozens of possible topics to choose from, I considered which one people might find interesting to read. All I needed was one. As my mind wandered, I remembered something a dear friend used to say to me -“attitude and gratitude”. She lived to be 96 years young. I have her notes and thank you cards tucked away in different places throughout my home. When I least expect it, I will find one. These notes are like little gifts from Heaven. I have read them over and over again. I am still touched by her words of kindness and tenderness. I have photos of her in all kinds of settings that make me smile and recall how much I loved her and how grateful I am to have known her. I can still hear her voice, hear her laugh and still hear her say, “love you, love you, love you”. I saw her cry once or twice during our years together. It was when she wanted to pay for a meal and treat us girls. If we tried to out-maneuver her, she would pucker up as if she was about to cry and make a sad face until she got her way. You see, none of us wanted to be responsible for making Hazel Hall cry. As soon as we stopped trying to pick up the tab, and she realized she had gotten her way, she was right back to being happy and giddy, just like a teenager. Years ago, our group of women friends asked Hazel for any pearls of wisdom that she could share with us. Her message was clear and to the point, “Attitude and Gratitude”. Be grateful every single day for everything you have been given, and live your life with a positive attitude toward everyone. She truly never had an unkind word to say about anybody. My friends and I are so grateful that she shared her life with us and that she took the time to introduce us to her friends,

who, just like her, were kind and generous. As I look back over my first year as Mayor, I have many people I would like to thank. First, I would like to acknowledge the residents in the City of Sandpoint for giving me the opportunity to serve you as your Mayor. It’s a privilege that I never forget. Thank you. I am grateful to the City of Sandpoint’s staff and employees who have helped guide me through all of the challenges that this first year has provided. I am grateful to all of the volunteers who help people in Sandpoint and beyond. Volunteering is what defines us as a city and it is at the very core of who we are as a community. I am grateful for my husband, for his patience, kindness, love and his supportive encouragement for continuing to serve Sandpoint. I am grateful to all of my friends for their understanding, love and continued friendship. I am grateful to my advisors and champions who keep challenging me to be the best that I can be. And, of course, to Hazel, who had such a profound influence on my life. She was a joy to watch. Wherever she went she was surrounded by people who wanted to be near her and share the space that she occupied. She was so comfortable with being who she was and her way of living life seemed effortless. For those of you who knew Hazel, I’m sure you also share in my memory of her and count your blessings for having had her in your life. 7 Ways to Improve Energy Effeciency Via Lighting It’s easy to instantly trim your energy consumption and boost the ecofriendliness of your home. The key to easy energy savings is lighting, but for many homeowners and renters, knowing how and what to do to improve their home’s lighting efficiency can be confusing. To alleviate that confusion, the American Lighting Association (ALA) offers some easy energy-saving steps: 1. Replace incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescents (CFLs). To make an immediate impact on your energy consumption -- and your utility bill — swap out your most-used incandescent bulbs with CFLs. “It’s the easiest way to start improving your energy efficiency,” says Joe Rey-Barreau, education consultant for the ALA and an associate professor at the University of Kentucky’s School of Interior Design. To find the right CFL for you, look at the color temperature listed on the bulb package label. Choose a bulb labeled “residential color,” “warm” or “soft white.” 2. Replace dimmable incandescent bulbs with dimmable CFLs. As the color range of CFLs has improved, so has their ability to be dimmed, and dimmable bulbs are proven to decrease energy use. However, CFLs still do not have the dimming range of incandescents. 3. Buy name brands. It is frustrating to invest in a longer-lasting bulb only to have it burn out quickly. To avoid that, buy recognizable brands for improved quality and color. 4. Revamp outdoor fixtures. Your outdoor lighting fixture may be beautiful, but it may be an energy guzzler, too. Look for energy-efficient fixtures that use either CFLs or light-emitting diodes (LEDs), or those that activate using a motion sensor or photocell. 5. Buy Energy Star-qualified fixtures and bulbs. Energy Star is a U.S. Department of Energy certification most recognized on appliances — though also used on lighting fixtures and bulbs. 6. Retrofit recessed lighting with LED fixtures. While LED bulbs have a high initial cost, they will last the lifetime of the fixture. 7. Replace undercabinet lighting. With long life and super-high efficiency, some LED lighting also offers fairly easy installation, including pucks and strips used as undercabinet lighting. As an added bonus, LED lights will not give off the undesirable heat of incandescents.

f you have not been to the Cedar Street Bridge lately, venture downtown and treat yourself to one of Sandpoint’s newest restaurants. La Fonda is located on the ground floor of the historic landmark bridge and offers not only a stunning view of the water and mountains, but also quality Mexican cuisine. Owned by Ray and Bella Richens, La Fonda opened on December 5th. The Mexican restaurant offers a variety of authentic, freshly made dishes and is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The couple, who were married in November, is excited about their new business and said the feedback they have already received has been encouraging. “People comment on how authentic and fresh all of our food is,” said Bella. Bella’s sister has lived in Sandpoint for the last 13 years and Bella often came to visit. She decided to move here about a year ago and shortly thereafter met Ray. Bella had worked in the restaurant industry for many years in her native San Diego, enjoys cooking and has many wonderful Mexican recipes from her childhood. She said it was always her dream to open a Mexican restaurant. Ray was born and raised in Sandpoint and has always enjoyed cooking. He worked for Litehouse for 16 years in various capacities and often helped cook at their many events. With Bella’s background in restaurant management and Ray’s passion and talent for cooking, it seemed like a perfect combination for a successful restaurant. Ray said his passion for his hometown of Sandpoint and its people is a driving force behind his business philosophy.

“I have lived here for 32 years, and watched people in the community struggle through some difficult times. I want to give back to the community by offering exceptional food at an affordable price,” said Ray. The decision to locate their restaurant in the Cedar Street Bridge had a great deal to do with Ray’s childhood memories. He recalls a time when the Bridge was filled with non-stop activity. It is coming back to that point and he and Bella want to be a part of it. Some of their more popular menu items include their mole sauce, which is made with real chocolate, raisins and peanut butter. “Everything is homemade from the beans to the sauces and the tortillas,” said Bella. Other unique dishes include Pollo La Crema – a white jalapeno sauce used either in enchiladas or on a grilled chicken breast. A popular promotion they have is Taco Tuesdays when they offer tacos for one dollar from 11am-6pm. “People told me I was crazy to offer them at such a low price, but it is something I can do to give back and try to help people out,” said Ray. “I am very tied to the community,” said Ray. “There are a lot of hard working people here.” La Fonda is open Sunday through Thursday from 8am-8pm and Friday and Saturday from 8am-10pm. t was 25 years ago when Sandpoint resident Dave Sleyster and his wife Tina moved from Colorado. Since then the couple has become an integral part of the community. Upon arriving in Sandpoint, Dave started his company, Energy Electric, Inc. and in spite of a roller coaster economy, Energy Electric is still going strong. Dave received his journeyman electrician certification in Colorado. The couple had also lived in Missoula while Tina, a speech pathologist, was studying for her master’s degree. It was then that they traveled frequently to Sandpoint and knew it was a place where they wanted to live. Initially Dave was the only electrician for Energy Electric, Inc. and one year later he added another employee. Today, there are four full time licensed and bonded electricians including Dave, as well as four trucks complete with what Sleyster refers to as a mobile warehouse. Energy Electric wired many of the homes in Ponder Point, wired a 30,000 square foot home east of Sandpoint, and worked on Swan’s Landing Restaurant, which is now known as Forty-One South. The company also provides electrical services to many large local businesses including Thorne Research, Lead-Lok and Super 1 Foods. While Energy Electric is known for its outstanding commercial and residential work, it also has been a select dealer for Generac Generators for over 7 years and has the only Commercial I and Commercial II technicians in the area. Sleyster, a Commercial I technician, and Kevin Bristow, a Commercial II technician, are required to attend three days of

training every two years. Dave attributes his business’s longevity to various factors, one of which is his knowledgeable staff who are all licensed journeyman. Bristow started with Energy Electric 5 years ago, Kealand Ramsey has been with the company for 11 years and Tim Appell 13 years. Sleyster adds that in an economy that has seen many changes over his 25 years in business, he has been successful in part due to the business’s ability to change and adapt to the market. In addition to having established a reputation for quality work, Dave Sleyster and his employees are very involved in giving back to the community. When the show Extreme Makeover Home Edition came to town several years ago, it was Energy Electric that volunteered to help make the project a success. That experience sparked Dave to become involved in Habitat for Humanity. The staff also donates to many causes including the Bonner County Food Bank, Toys for Tots and Kinderhaven. Dave has been a member of Business Networking International for the last 10 years. Dave and Tina have two children - Jake a senior at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and graduating in aerospace engineering, and Maddie who is a sophomore at Sandpoint High School and is on the dance team. Dave said Tina, owner of North Idaho Speech and Language and a partner in All About Kids, has been instrumental in helping his business succeed and for that he is grateful. But he is extremely thankful for the Sandpoint community too. “Customer loyalty has been the key to my success,” said Dave.

There are many features which make Trinity at City Beach unique, not the least of which is the breathtaking view. With the beach right outside its door, it makes for the perfect gathering place for locals and visitors, including members of the Sandpoint Sailing Association, tourists seeking to take in the beauty of the area and families whose children enjoy all that the beach and playground area have to offer. Menu items range in price from $6 to $28. Some of the dishes for which Trinity at City Beach is well-known include pulled pork enchiladas, grilled caesar salad, crawfish chowder, & Portuguese clams. “We served all these items at the old location and they are mainstays on the menu,” said Justin. Some of the new items which have been very popular include the new Hatch sandwich made with Hatch chiles shipped from New Mexico, pizza, prime rib, cedar plank salmon, and the TCB burger. Breakfast favorites include huevos rancheros and the Sandpoint breakfast sandwich Justin said owning the restaurant has provided opportunities to connect with both locals and tourists. And that, he said, has been invaluable. “Many of the tourists with whom I have forged a relationship return year after year,” said Justin. It is the connection with local residents and tourists that have allowed Justin to explore other opportunities to give back to the community. He is involved with Leadership Sandpoint, the Chamber of Commerce, fundraising

Preventing Senior Falls Starts in the Bathroom NECESSARY SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

ore than one in three seniors over age 65 fall each year, and the National Institute on Aging (NIA) says 80 percent of these falls are in the bathroom. Due to the multitude of unforgiving and slippery surfaces, bathrooms are very hazardous for the home. Knowing how to get in and out of tubs and showers properly and equipping homes with necessary safety precautions can reduce senior falls, keep them out of the emergency room and possibly extend their life. According to research from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1.6 million older adults seek emergency care each year for fall-related injuries, fractures or head trauma. In addition to potentially losing their independence, seniors 65 years old and up have a 25 percent chance of dying within six months to a year if they fall and break a hip. Seniors are vulnerable to falls for many reasons -- eyesight and reflexes aren’t as razor-sharp as they used to be, not to mention the balance issues posed by diabetes, heart disease, thyroid conditions and various medications. One of the most effective ways to preserve balance is to stay active with an exercise regimen. Ask your doctor about exercises designed to improve balance, stability and overall mobility, such as moderate yoga. But, another preventative method recommended by

here is no doubt that the last several years have been an economically challenging time. It is no longer the bottom line on a balance sheet that determines success for a small business; it is being able to keep the doors open through the down times. Even more challenging is opening a new business. But there are several small businesses in Sandpoint that did just that and have proven that not only is it possible to survive, but a business can also thrive in this economy. And one thing the owners of these businesses have in common is they attribute their success to the support of the Sandpoint community. One of those businesses is Evans Brothers Coffee Roasters. Brothers Rick and Randy Evans were raised in a military family and moved often. As adults, Rick settled in California and Randy in Seattle. But five years ago Rick and his wife desired to live in a small community where they could raise children. At the suggestion of younger brother Randy, the couple traveled to Sandpoint and instantly fell in love with the place they now call home. Randy joined them shortly thereafter. The move has not only been a blessing to the two men and their families, but to the Sandpoint community as well. But they did not come here with the intention of starting a coffee business. They came up with the idea one day while skiing at Schweitzer. “It was on chair 6 that we made the decision,” said Rick. It was then that Evans Brothers Coffee Roasters was born.

With Randy’s knowledge of coffee roasting and Rick’s business background, it made perfect sense that such a venture could be successful. But there was one problem, and it was a big one. Lack of money. They developed a business plan and feel fortunate to have been able to borrow the down payment from their grandparents and obtain a loan for which their parents cosigned. That was just over three years ago, and the business has proven successful, continuing to grow each year. They are becoming well known in the coffee industry and were recently named as a finalist in the Good Food Awards in San Francisco - an event which recognizes those who push their industries towards craftsmanship and sustainability while at the same time enhancing the agricultural landscape and contribute to building strong communities. But Evans Brothers is known for more than its coffee; the brothers also do much to give back to the Sandpoint community. They donate their coffee to several fundraising events and have been more than generous in opening their doors to host fundraisers and neighborhood tastings. While the goal of any business is success, Rick and Randy are also conscious of doing their part to help all of Sandpoint. “Our goal is to bring and develop a business that will make Sandpoint a little bit better place to be,” said Rick. “The community has really embraced us and that gives us a sense of pride and responsibility to keep this thing going.” At about the same time that Evans Brothers opened its doors, Sandpoint residents Rod and Nan Miller began a venture of their own. Originally from Ohio, the Millers lived in Ellensburg, WA for 18 years. They had visited Sandpoint and knew it was an area where they would like to live. When local businessman Tito Tiberi passed away, his business

Walk into their store on Baldy Mountain Road and one instantly feels as though they have entered someone’s home. The aroma that fills the air is of fresh baked goods and the warmth of the people who work there is equally as welcoming.

While the Millers say the intention was to bless the community of Sandpoint through its nourishing food, Nan says the people here have given her family more blessings than she ever imagined. But the last three years have not always been easy. They struggled at times to find employees who shared their same mission of serving others. Short staffed and working long hours, it was then that Nan says she realized the extent of the community’s generosity. Knowing they were shorthanded, customers offered to come in to help out in the store before they had to be at their own job. Nan and Rod said those offers of help from customers helped them through some rough times.

Handyman Services was for sale. Rod and Nan viewed this as a great opportunity to own a business and live here. The couple moved here in spring of 2009 and after operating Handyman Services for just over a year, they expanded to open Miller’s Country Store.

Rick and Randy Evans and Rod and Nan Miller have succeeded in their business ventures, but they are not willing to take all the credit. They all agree that their success is driven by the community and the support they have received from those who live here. “We have learned so much from our customers,” said Nan Miller. “They have encouraged us in so many ways with both their words and their actions.”

One might ask what gives people like Rick and Randy Evans and the Millers the courage to take such a leap of faith. For the Millers the answer is simple. “We wanted a way to serve the community,” said Nan of the homemade goods they sell. Many of the recipes are ones that Nan used to watch her great-grandmother create when Nan was a little girl. In addition to homemade bread and baked goods, they also offer local honey, raw milk, soup, and have a deli as well. Rod and Nan both say that although the beauty of the area is definitely a bonus, it is not the reason they moved to Sandpoint. It was the friendliness of the people. In the 3 ½ years since they moved here, they have discovered just how special of a place Sandpoint is. They are especially moved by how people in the community take care of one another. The Millers do what they can to help support others less fortunate in the community. They donate beautiful gift baskets to events such as the Kinderhaven Festival of Trees fundraiser, which helps abused and neglected children in North Idaho. Before her days were filled with working at the store, Nan sewed comforters and donated then to a local Sandpoint women’s shelter.

While businesses like Evans Brothers and Millers Country Store make it a large part of their mission to give back to the community in which they live, there is another store that is run exclusively by volunteers and whose sole purpose is to raise money for various causes in Sandpoint. A project of Community Assistance League, a local organization with approximately 175 members, Bizarre Bazaar has been open for nearly seven years, and in its current location on Church Street since November 2010. as cameras, books and seasonal decorations. Just last year the store raised enough money to donate over $100,000 in the way of grants or scholarships to the community. There have been countless organizations and people who have benefitted from the money CAL has raised through its upscale thrift shop. Store manager Joyce Spiller points out that the grants are very specific and are not given for administrative costs. Some of this year’s money was given to Sagle Fire Department for two cold water rescue suits; a children’s boat building program at the Wooden Boat Show; and to Junior Achievement for the elementary school program. These are just some of the dozens of grants and scholarships given each year.

Spiller said the volunteers’ pride in knowing they are doing something for the community is one important factor in the success of Bizarre Bazaar. Spiller echoes the sentiment of many who continue to be amazed at the generosity of businesses and individuals in the Sandpoint Community no matter what the cause. “The call for help is always answered,” said Spiller.

The women at Bizarre Bazaar enjoy working side by side and have forged lifelong friendships in their work together. Even the husbands are involved helping with electrical and plumbing needs in their store and building a shed for storage needs.

Spiller and other members of CAL attribute the success of the store to the approximately fifty volunteers who volunteer their time and talents to the store. The shifts are from 10am to 1pm and 1pm to 4pm and typically only require each member to sign up for one shift a month, but many do much more. People contribute in various areas. One person had a background and knowledge in antiques and books and helps in that section of the store. Others who have talent in design redo the window displays on a monthly basis. Sandopint High School Student Travels to Peru to Help Those Less Fortunate Article by Patty Hutchens

hen Sandpoint High School sophomore Heidi Skinner traveled to Peru on a mission trip, she knew it would be a challenge unlike any other. But what she didn’t expect is the joy she would find in a place so poverty stricken. “The people have a lot of love and joy and are very spiritual,” said Heidi of her November trip. “It brought a whole new perspective to my life, and I am now very careful to not take things for granted.” The trip was a result of a commitment made to the people of Chivay, Peru by Heidi’s parents, Don and Julie Skinner. The Skinners own Snowmass Alpacas, a 700 acre ranch in Sandpoint where they raise 500 alpaca, cattle, horses and other livestock. The couple has traveled to Peru often over the last three decades to purchase alpaca and have come to love the area and its people. But during those trips, Don said the lack of health care for the people in the highland villages was disturbing. After seeing elderly people transported by wheelbarrows for days on end in search of medical care, Don and Julie wanted to do what they could to give back to the community that has helped their own business succeed. They acquired ten acres in the town of Chivay, which sits at 12,000 feet above sea level, and constructed a medical clinic and orphanage. “It was quite a feat to build a building in the middle of nowhere,” said Don. Unfortunately, Don and Julie were unable to leave their work on the ranch to attend the grand opening. Instead, they sent Heidi and her brother Nick, 23, with the Quechua Benefit Mission. “We sent our kids over so they could have a feel of what we have been doing,” said Don, of the clinic which houses six exam rooms. The

orphanage currently is home to 20 children, and they hope to expand so they can care for up to 60 children. Heidi, 15, said the trip to Peru was a 24 hour ordeal which included a two hour wait while customs officials carefully searched and examined the medication she, her brother, and two doctors traveling with them were taking into the country. “Each person traveling to work at the clinic took between five and ten pounds of medication with them,” said Heidi, adding that even more was shipped in boxes. The medication consisted mainly of vitamins, painkillers, parasite killers, eye drops and ear drops. Heidi said the high altitude also causes skin damage and burns so they took creams as well. Immediately upon arriving at the Clinic, Heidi and the others thoroughly cleaned and organized the facility in preparation to see patients. Workers split up into two teams alternating care between the Skinner’s facility, called Snowmass Clinic, and nearby villages. Common medical issues Heidi and the others encountered included arthritis pain, vitamin deficiency, malnutrition, digestive issues, stomach parasites, and tooth decay. But it was the malnutrition that surprised Heidi the most. “That is where the vitamins will really help them,” she said. There were also a lot of joint issues. “They carry their kids everywhere so there are a lot of hip dysplasia and muscle issues.” The antibiotics were primarily used to prevent infection for the dental work performed. In the two weeks they were there, the team treated over 1700 people, working from 8 am to at least 7pm. When traveling to outlying villages, the volunteers arranged their visits on market days – a time when most of the residents would be in the town thereby maximizing the number of people they

But it wasn’t just the small children who were so welcoming; it was people of all ages. She said the experience also brought her closer to her brother Nick. “We really connected,” said Heidi adding that they both came away with an even greater appreciation for what they have. “I couldn’t be more grateful to my parents for what they have done not only for our community (in Sandpoint) but also the community in Peru. They are very generous people.”

She counted and packaged the medication and also assisted in taking vital signs of the patients, some of whom walked the distance of what would normally be a four hour drive just to receive medical care. While Heidi enjoyed working in the clinic, she said that nothing brought her more happiness than interacting with the children at the orphanage. She was amazed at the joy they showed in spite of having so little in their young lives.

Heidi, who plans one day to go into the field of medicine, hopes to return to Chivay as early as next year. A life changing experience, she said it was very humbling. On the final days of their visit, they had the ceremonial ribbon cutting. It was attended by a local priest who blessed the clinic and also in attendance was the mayor. It was the culmination of a two week period that will forever change her life. “I have a different perspective on what it means to be a community,” said Heidi. “We all need to be grateful for even the little things we have.”

“They have so much heart and spirit,” said Heidi of the children who ranged in age from 6 to 11 years old. Heidi and the others brought deflated soccer balls in their suitcases – a gift to the children who were ecstatic to play with the volunteers. Heidi helped the kids with their schoolwork and would often sit and color with them. Heidi speaks some Spanish but she said the little amount of verbal communication was not a barrier to bonding with these new found friends. For medical issues, there were two translators available.

riday nights during late summer and early fall are full of excitement in Sandpoint for several reasons. The weather is typically perfect, the town is alive and there is usually a football game being played at Barlow Stadium. For those who have been attending the Sandpoint High School football games over the course of the last 14 years, they can attest to the fact that there have been many changes over that time. However one constant that remains is the familiar face of Jarrett Robson running up and down the sidelines at the Bulldog football games. Jarrett is a 1997 Sandpoint High School graduate. He is affectionately called Jer-Bear by the students at Sandpoint High School and has served as Sandpoint’s football equipment manager for the past 14 years. Everything one sees happening with regard to the equipment is a direct result of Jarrett’s hard work. “I’m like a bad rash,” said Jarrett with a big smile on his face. “They can’t get rid of me.” And why would they want to? Jarrett has single handedly taken on a job that many of us wouldn’t want. Being the equipment manager is very labor intensive, involves long hours and for most it is a thankless job. But that’s not how Jarrett sees it. “I love working for Sandpoint High School. I feel like I am a spoke in the wheel. This is my place. It is somewhere I can make a difference in someone else’s life,” said Jarrett who adds that he thoroughly enjoys the kids and watching them develop over the years. “I take a lot of pride watching them come in young freshman and walking out young men,” said Jarrett. “I enjoy seeing the growth and maturity.” When asked to use one sentence to describe the head coaches for whom he has worked, Jarrett said, “I can’t answer in one sentence because all of them were great, but the one coach that I hoped would come back was Coach Puailoa.”

Jarrett went on to say that Puailoa is a great communicator and motivator. And now that his wish of Puailoa’s return has come true, Jarrett couldn’t be happier. “The BEST seasons were when Coach Puailoa was here. I am ecstatic not only for myself but for all the kids that are here,” said Jarrett. When asked to describe his most memorable highlight of the last 14 years, Jarrett didn’t state that it was the championship runs, a big play in a big game, but rather a thank you letter he received from a player. The letter was presented to him by Coach Mitchell at the team’s awards banquet a few years ago. “It made me feel good that I could help someone else,” he said. Jarrett’s dedication reaches far beyond the sidelines of the football field. An important thing to mention is that Jarrett does all of this as a volunteer and does not receive compensation for his efforts. “Everything you see here - those large cases, all that equipment, the Bulldog trailer, I purchased for the program,” said Jarrett. Jarrett clearly represents dedication, commitment and passion - all qualities that coaches preach to each student who plays sports. The way Jarrett sees it, actions speak louder than words and success in life is measured in many ways, not just by wins and losses. We can all learn a very important lesson from this dedicated Sandpoint High School Bulldog fan. With more of us focusing on what we can do for others and less of what others can do for us, we can all make this community a little bit better. More importantly, just as Jarrett does, we can all make a difference in someone else’s life. Just ask the 1,200 kids Jarrett has worked with the past 14 years.

SHS Senior Wins Mixed Martial Arts Title Fight Article by Patty Hutchens

andpoint High School senior, Ethan Hazan, has only been competing in Mixed Martial Arts for about a year. Yet, in just his fifth competition which took place last month, he claimed the Unified Combat League 145 pound title belt.

Ethan, who had taken part in various forms of marital arts when he was younger, did not become serious about it until he moved to Sandpoint from Renton, WA about a year ago. “I did judo in first and second grade and some karate starting in fifth grade,” said Ethan. When he was attending middle school in Renton, he began to wrestle and enjoyed the sport and the competition it provided. His uncle is Mike McCray, a coach at Black Bear Martial Arts in Sandpoint, which is owned by Ted Greenblott. Ethan began working with Mike at Black Bear when he first moved here. He began by learning and perfecting the art of jiu-jitsu, a Japanese martial art. Ethan describes the Mixed Martial Arts as a culmination of many different disciplines including boxing, jiu-jitsu, wrestling and muaythai - a combat sport from Thailand that uses stand-up striking along with various clinching techniques. His first Mixed Martial Art’s competition came when his uncle fell ill and was unable to compete. Ethan took his place. When Ethan won the title in December at the Vengeance in the Valley fights at the Spokane School of Boxing, he came out punching in the first round, before finally lifting his opponent off the ground and executing a body slam, leaving the more seasoned fighter slightly dazed. It was in the second round that Ethan’s opponent, Cody Roy, came back and attempted to control Ethan on the ground. But Ethan was able to find his way off his back and onto his feet, landing lightning-fast strikes. At the end of the second round the referee stopped the fight and awarded the technical knockout to Ethan Hazan, whose record is now 5-0. “I brought the belt to Sandpoint,” said Hazan. Ted Greenblott, owner of Sandpoint’s Black Bear Martial Arts, has been a blessing to many who choose to pursue the sport of Martial Arts. Ethan trains at the studio Monday through Friday from 6pm8pm and prior to fights he also goes in before school on many days. “You work for something so hard and then something like this (winning the title) happens and it all pays off,” said Hazan who adds that he would eventually like to compete professionally. andpoint West Athletic Club is offering a great incentive program this winter to help shed some unwanted pounds. The program is open to the community...both SWAC members and nonmembers welcome. The program cost is $39 and includes… • Weekly support with helpful exercise and nutrition concepts. • A minimum of 50% (of the program fees cash prize pool...the more people that sign up the greater the prizes. • Winners determined by % of weight lost. This makes all shapes and sizes “in the running”. On New Year’s Eve, Marilyn stood up in the local pub and said that it was time to get ready. t sits high above the town, looking down on the residents like an angel from above. And to many in Sandpoint, Schweitzer Mountain Resort has been just that. Last year alone the resort donated over $100,000 in lift tickets, season passes and monetary donations. But it doesn’t stop there. When tallying the in-kind donations, those too are nearly $100,000. One way Schweitzer reaches out to the community is the offering of a free day of skiing, boarding, lessons and fun for every fourth grade child in Lake Pend Oreille School District. It has been a tradition for many years and one that children anticipate with excitement. Schweitzer’s Events and Activities Director Mary Weber-Quinn said it gives children from all economic backgrounds an opportunity to experience the mountain that sits in their own backyard. In December Schweitzer held Community Day, offering $10 lift tickets with all the proceeds donated to two local charities. The mountain was bustling, and at the end of the day CEO Tom Chasse was able to present a total of $30,000 to benefit Community Cancer Services and Bonner Partners in Care. There are others ways in which the employees of Schweitzer Mountain give back to the community. For the last four years, they have come together to donate their time to 24 Hours for

Hank, a fundraiser during which skiers and boarders collect pledges and ski for up to 24 hours all to help raise money to find a cure for cystinosis, a disease which affects only 500 people in the United States, including six year old Sandpoint resident Hank Sturgis. Worldwide it affects only 2000 people, mostly children. Because of the efforts of Schweitzer and the community, Sandpoint has become one of the leaders worldwide in fundraising for the rare disease. This year’s event will take place March 22nd – 23rd. It is a favorite of many Schweitzer employees. “At 2 am everyone is pretty exhausted but exhilarated at the same time,” said Mary Weber-Quinn, adding that one of the reasons the Schweitzer staff goes all out for this event is because those putting it on have invested so much of themselves into it as well.

“This is a child in our community who suffers from this very rare disease,” said Mary Weber-Quinn. “And if we can help find a cure it means he will survive.” Because so many organizations seek donations, Schweitzer has provided an online link through which people can make requests. EVENTS & ACTIVITIES January 4, 11, 18, 25 - Junior Race Series. This race series will provide a low-cost ski racing opportunity for both experienced and new racers ages 6-16. Additionally, it will give kids a chance to meet others with the same interests. The emphasis is on introducing the fun of ski racing to our youth. Racers will meet at 5:30pm for the first session. During this first session participants will register, receive coaching, get to practice in a race course, and take two timed NASTAR runs. Subsequent sessions are also 5:30-7pm on January 11th, 18th, and 25th, all Fridays. Schweitzer Mountain Resort’s contribution to Winter Trails Day includes free trail access for the snowshoe trails and the Nordic ski trails. Sandpoint Onstage announces international director Jesus Quintero is holding a free introductory acting workshop from 6pm-9pm at the Panida Little Theater. rentals are available as well, on a reservation basis, and Schweitzer ski instructors will be on hand offering free Classic Skiing and Skate Skiing lessons. There will be free hot chocolate and snacks to keep everyone warm and fueled up as well. In addition, everyone who takes a lesson gets a coupon for a free Nordic Trail Pass to use at Schweitzer another day! Full moon snowshoe hikes are back for the 2012-13 winter season. Join our Activity Center staff as we snowshoe through majestic old growth forests to picnic point with only the moonlight to light our way.
