Dog Days at Dover Bay Resort A WEEKEND OF FUN, ACTION AND ENTERTAINMENT FOR THE ENTIRE FAMILY (AND YOUR DOG)
T
his year, the weekend of July 14-15 goes to our canine friends at the inaugural Dog Days at Dover Bay Resort. The two day benefit for the Panhandle Animal Shelter will feature activities and entertainment the entire family (including your four-legged relatives) can enjoy. “Dog Days is filled with so many events that we had to divide it between two days,” Mandy Evans, Executive Director of the Panhandle Animal Shelter said. “For the athletic guests we have sheep herding demonstrations, agility courses and fly ball. On the main stage we will be hosting a pet talent show and several competitions including awards for the ugliest/ cutest dogs, and of course we fit a Yappy Hour in the weekend too.” Contests and physical activities are not the only items on the agenda. “America’s Veterinarian” and well-known author Dr. Marty Becker will be joining his daughter, Mikkel Becker on stage for a dog training presentation. After the show, he will be available for a book signing. There will also be vaccination clinics, adoption stations, live music and a “Raise the Roof” auction of locally-made, one-ofa-kind dog houses and cat castles. For just a small recommended donation of $5.00, everyone can enjoy all that Dog Days has to offer. “The goal of Dog Days is to share a memorable weekend with our faithful friends while raising much needed funds for the 1,600 lost, abandoned, neglected and abused animals we service every year,” said Evans.

L
ike all bass fishing baits, the success a bass fisherman will experience using one of these lures will largely depend upon how the bait is presented to the fish.
If you have never used one of these baits, the bait is an odd looking bait that combines a common spinner blade and a jig into one bait. Rather than the blade and jig being aligned like an in-line spinner, it’s design is similar to an open safety pin with the blades on top and the jig on the bottom. It is fished horizontally in a cast and retrieve fashion. The speed of the retrieve can be varied by cranking the reel fast or slow but never so slowly that the blades stop turning. A fisherman can cover a lot of water quickly with this bait which makes it ideal when searching for fish. Most fishermen will have some success just casting and retrieving this bait without working too hard to perfect its presentation, however, working on the presentation will greatly improve fishing results. After using one of these baits for a while and you begin to have success, you will discover that the fish often bite the lure as soon as the bait hits the water. This is especially true if you are casting to the bank or other structure protruding from the water. As a matter of fact, I believe that 70 percent of the fish I catch with this bait bite as soon as the bait hits the water. I believe the reason for this is that they are reacting to what they believe is a frog or other food item that has just jumped off the bank, dock, log etc. into the water. If you have ever watched a frog slip into the water, you know it does not make a big splash and it doesn’t jump out there 2 to 4 feet from the bank.

So how can you perfect a spinner bait presentation that emulates a frog slipping into the water? There is a real science to this presentation and your rod and reel will play an important part. A spinning rod and reel can be used, but I have found that a bait casting rod and reel work better for me. There are a couple of reasons for this. First, the reel allows me to easily thumb the spool providing much more control of the distance and speed of the lure as it approaches its destination. I can slow it down if I use too much power on the cast. The second and very important reason is the bait casting reel allows me to open the bail and engage the reel easily and effortlessly. This is important because the lure must be moving immediately after the bait enters the water. Bass won’t bite the lure unless it is moving. I can quickly engage a bait casting reel by simply turning the handle. I also find that a bait casting rod and reel are easier for me to perform loop casts. The “loop cast” is a cast where the lure is swung in a circle before releasing the lure towards its target. This cast is important because most of the casting targets that hold fish are close to overhanging trees and other obstacles. It is important that the lure can be cast horizontally and close to the surface of the water to avoid obstacles. Loop casts also greatly reduce the splash on lure entry because of the low angle of entry. A loop cast can be performed with a spinning rod and reel as well. Casting “overhand” will likely end in a snag into the brush or tree and escaping that, it probably will make a big splash. If you are unfamiliar with the loop cast, try casting “side arm”. Most inexperienced anglers will struggle with this presentation and become discouraged unless they have a good equipment. Like any task you encounter in life, it is easier to perform it if you have the correct tools. Fishing should be fun and sometimes the tackle you use makes the difference between having a good day and a disappointing one. If you ever get an opportunity to watch a tournament fishermen use one of these baits you will be amazed by the accuracy of their presentation. Ask him about his gear and how important each piece is to his success. In many cases, it is this attention to detail in presentation that pays off in quantity and quality of fish caught. History of the U.S. Senior Open BROUGHT TO YOU BY THE BRIDGE AT SANDPOINT
T
he very first Senior Golf Open was played in New York in June of 1980 at the Winged Foot Golf Club on the East Course. It was established because of the interest of senior golfers who wanted to compete on an amateur and professional level. The very first Senior Open had six hundred and thirty-one entries. At this time, the senior golfer had to be at least fifty-five years of age the day of the tournament. Some of the former champions competed in the first Senior Golf Open such as William Campbell, Tommy Bolt, Jack Fleck, Ed Furgol and Lew Worsham. The winner of the first Senior Golf Open was Roberto De Vicenzo while William Campbell was in second place. The age limit was lowered to fifty just one year later to allow for more participants in the tournament. Arnold Palmer went onto win the second Senior Open at the age of fifty-one in Michigan. Miller Barber won the Senior Open in 1982, which was just one of his three wins for a Senior Open. The other two wins were for 1984 and 1985. As of 2002, there were a little over three thousand entries for the Senior Golf Open. In 2006, Allen Doyle became the new oldest winner of the Senior Open at the age of fifty-seven, eleven months, seventeen days. The oldest winner before that was De Vicenzo at the age of fifty-seven years, two months and fifteen days. Don Pooley won his way into the Senior Golf Open by qualifying and went onto win the tournament in 2002. Today, you will see only a three or four hole playoff if needed were in the past it used to be four playoffs of eighteen holes. There have only been a few times in the Senior Open history of a playoff occurring, once in 1981, 1983, 1988 and 1991 with the winners being Arnold Palmer, Billy Casper, Gary Player and Jack Nicholas respectfully.
In 2007, the Senior Open was played at Whistling Straits in Haven, Wisconsin where senior golf player Brad Bryant won the Championship. He had winnings of four hundred and seventy thousand dollars to take home with him. He did share his revenue with his caddies Tony Smith. The golf course designed Pete Dye was designed to attract PGA tournaments in the future. It proved to be a tricky course that is considered rugged terrain that does not have golf cart abilities. If you want a chance to watch the U.S. Senior Open when it comes to your town, you can buy advance tickets, walk around with your favorite players, and see how they fair in the tournament. Some of the courses they play are set up according to the guidelines established for the tours. This is just another way to see how the pros do it and how they apply different stances and what clubs they use to get distance and win the game. It is always a spectacular event for any city and golf course when the Senior Open comes to town.

Independence Day WHEN INDEPENDENCE CELEBRATIONS FIRST BEGAN
W
hile the traditional 4th of July Holiday is to celebrate the anniversary of the declaration of the United States’ independence from England, it is interesting to note that is not when Independence Day celebrations first began. Even more interesting to note is that even though the United States celebrates it’s independence from England on that day; the holiday itself is largely based on English traditions. You may not know that during the sixteenth century there were many political and regions debates raging, and a lot of discontent existed in the British Isles. During this time, the British people started using both official and unofficial anniversary dates to make their own political statements and show their alliances. They did this by having parades and feasting, which ultimately was to show other people who their alliances were with. When the colonizers left the British Empire, this tradition carried across the ocean. When discontent began to spread, these events were used as a means of protest which allowed the colonizers to show their political affiliations and messages based on their parades and dinners. It was all simply for show. Whenever there was a large parade, feast or other event happening, people often showed up simply to see what was going on. In this day, the large groups of people were seen as supporting whatever political opinion was being promoted – whether they truly did or not. When the Declaration of Independence was printed, a staged celebration was created and the day was to be the celebration of independence from England, though no one ever did anything official for the day to become a holiday. Because the crowds were so large, it was assumed that the colonizers were

interested in separating from the English and the movement proceeded. There were many original festivals to celebrate the Independence Day in the early years; however, the date which it came to be celebrated is July 4th. While the celebrations of the sixteenth century were essentially a political movement, today’s Independence Day celebrations are based on the actual freedom the US gained from England. The celebrations have grown and evolved over the years, but in the last two hundred plus years, the celebration has been about our own independence as the United States of America. Modern day 4th of July festivities now include: parades, feasts, festivals and other large gatherings of people. Often patriotic songs are played and people take a nice relaxing day off to enjoy simply living here in the United States. Many festivals and feasts are head in town parks. This allows the children to run free and play, while the adults enjoy a meal of largely BBQ and other picnic foods. In addition to the celebrations was the addition of fireworks. While fireworks are largely a Chinese tradition, they are used on the 4th of July by millions of Americans to help celebrate the day. Most towns and cities across the United States allow citizens to purchase at least safe and sane fireworks for their July 4th celebrations. As you can see, while the 4th of July is now celebrated as a national holiday, it once was staged as a sort-of political act. However, that political thinking caught on and the United States did get its freedom from England – even though our parades and festivals are mostly in the English style.

odern outdoor furniture can mean so many things. It evolves around individual lifestyle and habits. For some, it may mean outdoor activities like playtime for kids; family meals and quiet time for evenings; for others, it may mean outdoor parties, patio and deck furniture for pool parties, while for someone else it may mean Adirondack outdoor chairs for relaxing, and accessories like outdoor umbrellas to keep the sun off. Whatever your reason for needing outdoor furniture, you may want to consider a few different types of outdoor furniture first: Wooden Furniture: Teak is one of the most popular outdoor furniture owing to its natural weathering properties. It is gifted with natural oils that resist rot and decay. The highquality wood makes it one of the most durable choices. While the natural look and feel is a favorite with furniture buffs, wood also keeps the heat away and is easy to clean. Teak furniture stands the test of time and has been seen to adorn outdoor space over decades with a little routine maintenance and care. Other wooden furniture used outdoors must include Balau and Eucalyptus wood that is comparatively cheaper. Wicker: Another favorite outdoor furniture material, Wicker is durable and meets the standards on classic naturalness. You may like Rattan furniture for outdoors on a consistent weave that does not hook clothing when you sit. Then there is Resin that allows the natural look and is often framed with the help of robust material like aluminium for outdoors. Metal: Robust Metal furniture is used outdoors owing to its affordability. Tubular hollow aluminium furniture is comparatively less expensive than wrought iron. Aluminium or wrought iron furniture is hardwearing, but teak may need a coat of oil every six months, which is pretty okay too. Concerts for a Cause Kicks Off BROUGHT TO YOU BY PONDERAY GARDEN CENTER
I
n a collaborative effort, Ponderay Garden Center and Horizon Credit Union have teamed up to produce the FREE concert series, Concerts for a Cause. Starting Saturday July 7th and continuing every Saturday evening through September 1st, the Concerts for a Cause series features top quality regional and national artists supporting local non-profit groups. According to Ponderay Garden Center General Manager Kevin Mansoor, “Our music producer Eddie Fontaine has worked very hard to put together an incredible line up of music for the community the likes of which has never been seen in the Sandpoint area for a FREE concert series.” The line up for the free concert series includes artists such as Bonnie Raitt’s brother, David Raitt and his band The Baja Boogie Blues Band who are coming up from Mexico, Yabba Griffiths the Reggae Superstar who was inducted into the Reggae Walk of Fame in 2009, joins us from Chicago Illinois, Thom Sheperd, with 10 country singles, from Austin TX, and Nu Jack City a funky soul band currently performing extensively throughout the Northwest. These national and regional artists are then combined with local talent to provide a concert series like no other. While the concerts are free to attend, there will be several locations where cover charge donations will be accepted. 100% of these cover charge donations go directly to a different non-profit group each concert. Steve Wilder, Vice President of Relationship Management for Horizon Credit Union added, “Ponderay Garden Center has a fabulous venue and is going to be great host for these community events. We are very happy to be able to provide this concert series to the community while simultaneously using each concert to raise money for a local non-profit group.” PGC GM Kevin Mansoor

Jerry was in the hospital recovering from surgery when a nurse asks him how he is feeling. “I’m OK but I didn’t like the four-letter-word the doctor used in surgery,” he answered. “What did he say,” asked the nurse. “OOPS!”

Larry was a photographer for the N.Y. Times, and was scheduled to meet a plane on the runway to take him on a job. “Hit it,” said Larry climbing into the first plane he saw on the runway. The pilot took off, and was soon in the air. “OK,” said Larry, “fly low over the trees over there, I want to take a few pictures.” “What do you mean?” asked the pilot. Larry looked at the pilot and answered a little annoyed, “I need to take some pictures for the N.Y. Times, so please…..” There was a
long pause, before the pilot asked in a shaky voice, “you mean you’re not my pilot instructor?”

Marvin, was in the hospital on his death bed. The family called Marvin’s Preacher to be with him in his final moments. As the Preacher stood by the bed, Marvin’s condition seemed to deteriorate, and Marvin motioned for someone to quickly pass him a pen and paper. The Preacher quickly got a pen and paper and lovingly handed it to Marvin. But before he had a chance to read the note, Marvin died. The Preacher feeling that now wasn’t the right time to read it put the note in his jacket pocket. It was at the funeral while speaking that the Preacher suddenly remembered the note. Reaching deep into his pocket the Preacher said “and you know what, I suddenly remembered that right before Marvin died he handed me a note, and knowing Marvin I’m sure it was something inspiring that we can all gain from. With that introduction the Preacher ripped out the note and opened it. The note said “HEY, YOU ARE STANDING ON MY OXYGEN TUBE!”
