COMING IN JUNE! A NEW SANDPOINT EXPERIENCE! May 2012 | SANDPOINT NEWSLINE 5
GOOD NEWS
Lost in the ‘50s DONATIONS KEEP THE EVENT ALIVE
T
his month Sandpoint, celebrates its 27th annual Lost in the ‘50s event, which may be Sandpoint’s biggest attraction all year! Organizer Carolyn Gleason has been behind the scenes since its inception 26 years ago. What started off as an adjunct to a ‘50’s-themed dance she organized as part of a means to drum up money for the Festival of Sandpoint this event has blossomed into an incredibly popular experience here in Sandpoint. The first year there were 26 total cars, the next year 56, the third 100 and today too many to count. Car enthusiasts come from all over including many from Canada. The event spans three days and includes several shows, dances, a cruise through town and a full-fledged show downtown. It kicks off Thursday night, May 17th with Rock ‘N’ Roll Heaven at the Panida Theatre. On Friday afternoon, May 18th cars and their drivers assemble at the high school parking lot. Once fully amassed, they line file out and head to the parade. Following the parade there is a show and dance at the Bonner
County Fairgrounds starting at 7:30. And last, on Saturday, May 19th the car show takes place from 9:45 AM to 3:30 PM. Wrapping up the event there will be a final show and dance at the Bonner County Fairgrounds featuring the Tokens, the Reflections and the Rocky and the Rollers band! This unique event has been made possible because of the generous donations that come in to support it. Without donations Sandpoint would lose this experience. Over the last few years Carolyn has seen donations fall and as a result she has personally had to put in not only her blood sweat and tears, but a lot of her own money just to keep this event alive. Its been a labor of love for her and without her relentless efforts this show would not go on. All donations can be made by dropping in at 2nd Avenue Pizza or visiting www.lostinthe50s.org. Every cent donated will go directly to Lost in the ‘50s. With the very real possibility of not having enough money to continue Lost in the ‘50s, please make it your mission to contribute. If everyone that came out to see the event just donated $1.00 we could raise close to twenty-five thousand dollars to keep Lost in the ‘50s a Sandpoint tradition.

Tips for Catching
W
BIG Fish
Article by Dan Howard
ith the technology we have today you would think we would be able to communicate with the fish. Unfortunately, that has yet to be accomplished. Until that happens we must find another method to figure out what it takes to catch the big ones.
So what do we know about big fish? For one thing they are hard to catch. They are older and that probably explains why they are big. This doesn’t sound like much to start with, but really it is quite a bit of information. So what theories can we come up with from these simple statements of fact? One thing we have learned as humans is that we learn to avoid bad experiences. Generally we do not want to repeat behaviors that cause us pain or endanger our lives. Fish are probably not that different from us. The big fish probably are wary of the common approaches to catching them, especially if they have been lucky enough to be released or were able to spit the hook or break the line to gain their freedom. With the growing popularity of “catch and release” fishing , fish are learning what lures to avoid. Another theory is that big fish do not live and feed in the same locations as the majority of the smaller fish. When you think about this it makes logical sense. Adult humans are stronger than adolescent children, but the adolescent children are quicker and more agile. Few 40-year-old men will compete well with a 20 year old young man. Fish probably have similar issues. Older fish are probably not as agile the younger ones. So what conclusions can we draw from this? One might be that we need to use realistic baits, actions and presentations. Maybe it means trying something that fish haven’t seen. Why do you think so many professional anglers are always trying to come up with new and different presentations? Many of them work directly with lure manufacturers to develop new lures. What about sound? Several years ago rattles were added to lures. The fish responded. They had not experienced them and were anxious to bite them. The market was soon flooded with rattle baits. For several years now it has been pretty hard to find crank baits that don’t have a rattle. Recently fishermen are finding that the old non-rattle crank baits are working better that the ones that rattle. The moral of this story should be to use lures that are different and relatively unknown to the fish you are targeting.

What about presentation? Presentation is a big concern. Obviously the closest presentation to natural bait will probably always be a good approach. If a fish can’t distinguish your bait from the natural thing then you have a good chance of fooling him into biting. Try fishing in a swimming pool or exceptionally clear water where you can see your lure really well. Watch your lure in action. What retrieve looks the most natural? Remember that speed can make a big difference here. Most fishermen fish their lures way to fast. Slowing down your presentation can make a huge difference. Practice casting. Usually a cast that allows your lure to gently enter the water with as little splash as possible draws the most strikes. Techniques like flipping are amazingly successful for allowing this type of lure entry. Often the best presentation is to have your lure enter the water within a couple of inches of the bank or log or other piece of cover you are fishing around. Most natural bait will not be jumping off a log or the bank and land three feet or more away from it. (This is not always the case. When fish are aggressive, they may want a fast presentation but usually slow is good and slower is better and the less splash at entry means a better chance for a bite). Try fishing where everyone else is not fishing. It makes some sense that the big fish would avoid heavy pressured waters and schooling with other bass. Also try fishing with big baits. If you were a youngster, you probably would not be as likely to eat a large bait, however, a large fish would likely take a larger bait. This is a proven method of pulling the larger fish from a school.

Local Co-Op Advertising A WIN/WIN PROPOSITION
A
n easy way for a small business to expand its marketing budget is through cooperative advertising. Cooperative advertising, or as sometimes abbreviated “Co-op”, is when a producer of goods, for use by service providers or for resale, reimburses the advertising business in part or in full for advertising expenditures that involves its products. These programs are widely available because quite simply they save the producers of goods money. Bottom line is that local advertising rates available to the advertising business are at least 20% lower than national advertising rates. Therefore, the benefit for the producers of goods is increased brand recognition within that market at the lower local advertising rates, enhanced reseller relations and much more. However, cooperative advertising programs are an integral part of the producers own strategic marketing plan and for this reason they may not only vary from producer to producer but from product to product. Also, because these programs are an integral part of the producers strategic marketing plan, stringent rules and regulations are often placed on cooperative advertising dollars. These rules and regulations may cover media channels chosen, product placement, ad positioning and size and much more. Cooperative advertising is a win/win proposition for the producer and advertising business. These programs allow producers to increase brand recognition in the market at the much lower local advertising rates and allow the advertising business to increase its marketing budget at no additional cost to the business. All small businesses should actively pursue these valuable cooperative advertising opportunities. DSS Home Preservation Services

HEALTHY LIVING
Nothing Like a Vegetarian Diet DIET RICH IN NUTRIENTS
T
hese days you will find many people looking for options for making their diet rich in nutrients. The food pyramid is like a tool that will ensure that you have a healthy diet. There are different ways of illustrating a healthy diet plan but the most accepted way is in the shape of the pyramid. Food pyramids have been used by dieticians and even doctors for outlining different food groups as well as food choices, which will lay the foundation for a healthy intake of food if taken in right proportion. The Food Pyramid Today there are several types of food pyramids available and this might confuse you as you might not know which ones to choose. But the good thing is that the basic principles of different food pyramids are same and focus on the following: 1. Eat as much fruits as possible with fresh vegetables and whole grains 2. Reduce the intake of trans fat, saturated fat, and cholesterol as much as possible 3. Limit the intake of salt and sweets 4. Avoid alcohol or drink in moderation 5. Control the total number of calories consumed by you on a daily basis 6. Physical activity is a must The Four Main Categories of Vegetarian: i. Flexitarians: These people are also known as semivegetarians and they follow a plant-based diet normally and sometimes consume smaller quantities of poultry, meat and fish. ii. Vegans: Vegans are pure vegetarian who will consume only plant-based foods. They will not consume any animal-derived food like eggs, cheese, meat, milk and fish. iii. Lacto-Ovo Vegetarians: This comprises of people who
consume milk, eggs, and any milk products like yogurt and cheese apart from plant-based foods. Lacto-ovo vegetarians don’t consume fish and red meat. iv. Lacto-Vegetarians: Lacto-vegetarians consume only milk and milk based products apart from plant-based foods. They don’t consume fish, eggs, meat and other poultry products. A healthy diet includes mostly fibrous food, which is in the form of fresh vegetables and fruits. Some of the important nutrients available through non-meat sources include: i. Protein: The human body requires a lot of protein for maintaining healthy bones, skin, muscles and other organs. Some of the food products that are high in proteins include legumes, soy products, lentils, seeds, nuts and whole grains. ii. Vitamin B-12: The human body requires vitamin B-12 for producing red blood cells and to prevent anemia. Vitamin B-12 is found in some of the enriched cereals, or fortified soy products. iii. Calcium: Calcium is required mostly for strengthening the bones and to make the teeth stronger. You can find calcium in most of the green vegetables like turnip, spinach, collard greens, broccoli and kale. iv. Iron: Iron is a crucial nutrient that is required for red blood cells. You can consume iron by eating peas, dry beans, lentils, whole-grain products, fruits like bananas, dark leafy green vegetables, enriched cereals, and even dry fruit. You can also consume foods, which are rich in vitamin C like citrus fruits, strawberries, tomatoes, broccoli and cabbage. v. Zinc: This is an important nutrient that builds enzymes in the human body for enhancing the process of cell division and also helps in the formation of proteins. Some of the best food sources for zinc include soy products, whole grains, nuts and wheat germ.

Neurofeedback is an alternative natural therapy that is non-invasive, nonpharmaceutical, and requires almost no effort on the part of the trainee. Also known as EEG Biofeedback It trains brainwaves to find and utilize more efficient neural pathways. In doing so the brain is taught to get “in the zone” and function at peak performance levels. Since the brain is our master regulator, quality of life is improved in a variety of ways. Studies have shown statistically significant improvement in pain, sleep, depression, anxiety, panic attacks, flashbacks, nightmares, seizures, migraines, memory loss. Evidence also supports improvements in behaviors associated with attentiveness, impulsivity, resistance, distractibility, even IQ is often improved. UCLA studies show that, coupled with Rehab, Counseling, or a 12 step program Neurofeedback training can reduce the incidence of addiction relapse by up to 77%. Under a Doctor’s supervision some are able to reduce or eliminate the need for certain medications. Neurofeedback trains the brain to improve mental focus, peak performance, and quality of life for students, athletes, professionals, seniors, and anyone who wants to reduce their stress, think more clearly, and perform better in their daily life. SENIOR FOCUS
Activities for Seniors BROUGHT TO YOU BY THE BRIDGE AT SANDPOINT
S
enior centers have been created and developed to specifically cater to the unique needs of aging individuals. It is important to find out the background and current programs offered to determine if they provide the right activities for seniors that will truly lead to long term benefits. Find a center that encourages independence for overall sense of well-being.
wellness. The directors and facilitators can provide you full details regarding the events and programs given for residents. It is recommended that you consider location as a factor in choosing the right senior center. If you plan to leave your parent or grandparent there, it will be to your convenience if you live nearby. This way, you can pick up or visit the elderly more frequently.
About the Senior Center A senior center functions to aid aging individuals cope with their daily needs, as well as provide activities, entertainment and counseling for a renewed sense of well-being. There are several centers located throughout the United States. The first step to locating these would be to search your local phone book. There is a special section with pages for the community that includes all resources for senior citizens. Senior centers are most likely found in this section.
Assessing the Available Services Check the different programs available and compare the physical appearance of the choices you are considering. It is important that the place has all the right amenities that the senior citizen personally prefers. Ask the person to be informed about special requests and options that can help you narrow down your search. Also talk to some other people who are undergoing programs and services and allow them to list down the strengths and weaknesses. You can also talk to the directors and coordinators regarding your concerns, so they can immediately see if their objectives are at par with yours.
View the county or city web site for the community where you belong to. Several web sites include a specific section for aging individuals, complete with information regarding local resources. Find the regional and local area agency on aging. These groups contain a lot of information and helpful resources for seniors. Request for a complete list of centers found in your area or community. Searching for the Place Once you’ve received the full list, you can hone down everything into 2 to 4 sources. Select these for further review and assessment. You can call the agency and arrange for a tour with the directors of the senior center. These individuals can present you all the facilities, physical properties and other equipment and events available to give seniors complete
Reviewing You can visit the official web site of the senior center to know more about the background, thrusts and patient testimonials. If they have a customer service support section, that is a good sign, as well as having an FAQ section. Review all the choices you have before finalizing. You may even ask the senior citizen to take a couple of sessions to help assess and decide. If the elderly is suffering from a disease or disability, make sure that the center knows. They should have medical and health professionals ready to cater to every need, at any time. Accidents and emergencies should be attended to immediately through a prepared backup plan and ready-to-use equipment.

OUTDOOR EXPERIENCE
Choosing Bass Fishing Tackle SO MANY CHOICES
B
ass fishing has long been popular throughout the southern region of the United States of America. In fact, the enthusiasm for this sport has expanded far beyond the borders of the south. Now people enjoy fishing for bass throughout the world. It has actually become both a competitive sport and favorite family outing in many places. Tackle for Bass Fishing Special tackle is available just for bass fishing enthusiasts. Bass fishing tackle is generally a good bit larger then what is used for other types of fishing. Both swivels and weights are identifying characteristics of bass fishing tackle. Choosing Tackle The type of tackle that is used depends on how and where an individual is engaging in fishing. For example, if you’re using a plastic worm as bait, you will need a hook and weight to keep the worm submerged in the water. The size of the weight to be used is determined by the water’s depth and conditions as well as what the wind is doing. Choosing Line The type of fishing line a bass fisher will use is decided by looking at how clear the water is and whether there are many things to hang up the line in this piece of water. Darker water generally calls for fourteen to twenty pound test. Each fishing situation is unique, and has its own nuances and particular needs. When a plastic worm is used in the popular Carolina style, a line of greater thickness might be utilized, at least up to where the weight and swivel are located. The line on the hook, however, should not be so heavy. A lighter hook line will let the bait float a little above the bottom. The time to use
this Carolina style rig is when fishing an area characterized by grass covering the bottom of the water. This technique allows the worm to float just above the level of the weeds so the fish can see it. In either case, there are certainly many complexities involved in making your final choices. Be Prepared for Everything It is important in bass fishing to know what kind of fishing adventure is planned. Sometimes bass fishing enthusiasts will choose to have more than one rod set up for different fishing scenarios. This way they can easily change setups as the situation warrants. They never have to miss an opportunity due to lack of preparation. There are many choices available in bass fishing tackle and the extensive choices offer you many different options for your bass fishing. Choosing Your Reel You can’t be good at bass fishing without having a good reel. The actual reel to be used is another important decision that bass fishers have to make. You might use spinning tackle or a bait caster with an open face. It really just depends on the type of fishing you plan to do and where you plan to enjoy your fishing adventures. Bait casters can be difficult for novice users to work with. However, they are an excellent and very reliable option for experienced users in their favorite fishing location. Selecting both a rod and reel that you are comfortable with is of utmost importance. You will work most effectively with your bass fishing gear when you feel comfortable with it and you get accustomed to using it. Examine all of your options to find the best fit for you. No one but you knows what feels the best for you. With so many choices, there is sure to be a perfect option for you.

Dentists Lewis and Hawn Break Out New Technology INTRODUCING SANDPOINT TO CEREC–ONE VISIT DENTISTRY
C
EREC dentistry is the new buzz in the dental community. For those who aren’t familiar with this, it is an innovative Computer Aided Design (CAD) machine that allows dentists to fabricate crowns, caps and fillings in the office while the patient is being treated.
Drs. Lewis and Hawn are extremely impressed with the accuracy and exceptional quality of the restoration that the CEREC unit designs and mills. They are able to fabricate porcelain restorations with more accuracy than traditional restorations. Through extensive training provided by CEREC, both Lewis and Hawn have become experts in CAD dentistry.
This is a jump forward in dentistry as we know it. Patients do not have to have a temporary crown (along with frequently associated problems) and then wait 2 to 3 weeks to get their permanent crown back from a dental lab. The restorations are designed, fabricated chairside, and bonded all in a single appointment. This convenience to the patient has received fantastic praise since Dr. Lewis and Dr. Hawn implemented CEREC dentistry.
With this advanced technology, Drs. Lewis and Hawn are able to provide a higher level of care without any increase in costs to the patient. This has made the transition to the new CEREC unit a winwin situation for both doctor and patient! CEREC one-visit dentistry is rapidly becoming the standard of care in the dental field. If you are interested in convenient, exceptional quality, one-visit dentistry, you are invited to call Drs. Lewis and Hawn for more information about CEREC. Drs. Lewis and Hawn General and Advanced restorative Dentistry, 2025 Pine Street, Sandpoint. 208.265.4558.
The CEREC unit allows dentists to be much more conservative in their treatment planning. It allows them to “save” considerably more tooth structure because there is no temporary phase. This lowers the patient‘s risk of future root canals or extractions and produces less post-operative sensitivity.

aintaining straight A’s isn’t all that bad; it displays both a desire and skill. Maintaining straight A’s and being a three-sport athlete demonstrates much more like determination, passion commitment and fortitude! Jake is an 8th grader at Sandpoint Junior Academy and he plays football, wrestles and plays basketball.
Jake Timothy
Looking ahead Jake has a strong desire to play football at Boise State University where he will also pursue his dream of one day designing the next ranted and raved over Air Jordon basketball shoes. The biggest thing Jake will miss when he leaves for Boise is “Dubb’s chocolate milkshakes.” He told us that he can’t “live without them.” A freshman this year, Trinity has already made an impact on the high school sports scene having made the Junior Varsity team as a Freshman. “I love playing volleyball,” Trinty told the Newsline. Her love for the game continues to blossom as Trinity was chosen to join a travel club team recently. A starter in the back row, her U-16 volleyball club team just received a bid to join a national tournament later this year. Besides sports, Trinity has a passion for fashion and plans on pursuing a career where she will “ help the movie stars dress for the red carpet.” When asked about her college plans she told us that her dream would be a school in Southern California, possibly San Diego State. When not on the court, doing homework or keeping up on the latest fashion trends, you can find Trinity eating Italian food, her favorite! When asked for her favorite teacher she told us that although its a hard answer to give because she loves them all, she chose Mrs. Roos “because she’s been a teacher, a mentor and a coach to me.”

nter to win this fully restored classic 1965 Mustang. Raffle tickets can be purchased through any junior tackle football player or any high school football player. The Drawing will be on Sunday May 20th at 2nd Ave Pizza at 12pm. Brief History of the Mustang In 1965 the Ford Mustang debuted as a simple sports car powered by a 170 cid six cylinder with a pair of V8’s as options. Originally named for the fighter plane, the P-51 Mustang and later the horse Mustang became the emblem. Buyers loved its low price, long hood, short trunk styling and its many options and Ford loved its high volume sales. In mid 1964, Ford introduced the sporty 2+2 fastback body style to go along with the hardtop coupe and convertible. For those that wanted more, the legendary Carroll Shelby and Ford collaborated to produce the Shelby GT-350. This was a fastback specially tuned by Shelby. The 289 V8 produced 306bhp in street tune and around 360bhp in special GT-350R race tune. These Shelby’s had no back seat, were only available in white and were fully race ready.

Is Your Dog Ready for Summer? PREVENT YOUR DOG FROM GETTING DISEASES
S
ummer is almost here and if you haven’t already done so, you should make sure your dog is ready for another season outdoors. Most pet owners spend a good deal of time outside during the spring and summer months, taking their pets along to share in the fun, but also exposing them to fleas, ticks and other animals that can be carriers of rabies and other diseases. Every dog should be permanently protected from distemper, infectious hepatitis and leptospirosis. These vaccines are now generally combined in one single inoculation. From the age of 6 months, all dogs should also be protected from rabies. Most vaccines are effective for one year, although the latest rabies shot is good for four. They are almost 100 percent effective when administered on schedule, but worthless if exposure to risk is maintained after the protection has expired. After your initial visit, you will normally need to take your dog to the vet only once a year to keep his immunization up to date. During this annual visit, ask him to give your dog a thorough examination, including checkup of his: -teeth (removing tartar if necessary) -anal glands (emptying them if necessary) -nails (clipping them if necessary) -stool (if you think he may have worms) Females need more regular attention than males, especially if they are bred. When you wish to travel with your dog, you will be prepared for any state, federal or international requirement if you ask your vet for a certificate of good health and make sure that his vaccinations are in order before you leave. And make sure you NEVER leave your dog in a hot car for any amount of time. Many dogs die every year in hot cars. Dogs can’t cool down in hot cars, so it is best to leave a window down or provide a sun shield in addition to water.

HOME AND GARDEN
Ponderay Garden Center recently received National Recognition and Honors by being named as one of the Top 100 Revolutionary Garden Centers in the United States!
Kids in the Garden TEACHING CHILDREN TO GARDEN
I
s gardening a lost art? There is a statement in the garden center industry that today’s population in the United States is considered to be three generations removed from the land. That means it has been three generations since most families have really grown much of their own food. It used to be that kids grew up tending the family garden. Those gardening skills were passed on from generation to generation through hands on learning. Today, many of our children have only learned how to buy groceries from the local store. There is another saying…teach a kid to garden and he may just feed the world, teach a kid to shop and you’ll just be broke. Yet, when given the chance, most kids love to learn to garden. School gardening programs are sprouting up all over the place and fill up very fast. Kids are amazed when they plant seeds and then pull up carrots. Want to amaze the kids even more? Get some seeds for Cosmic Purple carrots. While pulling up an orange carrot is fun, pulling up a purple one is even more fun. Plus, the purple ones have a higher antioxidant level due to their darker color. There are also purple potatoes that are dark purple inside as well as red potatoes with red skin and red flesh Planting some of these unique foods in the garden can really help get the kids involved.
Visit our NEW Downtown Sandpoint Location! Corner of Boyer and Highway 2
It is also true that sometimes getting kids to eat their veggies at the dinner table can be quite a challenge. Yet, when they grow the veggies themselves, they are often eager to give them a try. You might want to consider taking part of your garden and designating it as the kid’s garden. Let them choose what to plant and then teach them how to take care of their own garden spot. As our gas prices continue to soar, food prices are going to have no choice but to follow. The cost of running the equipment on the farms goes up, the cost transporting the food to the processors goes up, and the cost of transporting the food to our stores goes up. With much of our produce coming out of Mexico and even China now, you can only imagine what higher fuel prices means to our food prices. Growing our own doesn’t just make “cents”, it is quickly becoming a necessity. Teaching your kids to garden is a sustainable practice that can pay off for years to come. And who knows, just maybe it will be your kid that figures out how to feed the world. Need more ideas? Check out www.kidsgardening.org, a resource put together by the National Gardening Association. There you will find a wealth of great information about how and why to get kids involved in gardening. There are even resources there for grants and funding for communities to put together kids gardening programs. ACTIVITIES AND FUN
TEN DOLLARS IS TEN DOLLARS
TWO WORDS
A man and a woman go to the carnival every year. Every time the man says,”Anna can we ride them airplanes that goes up for a couple of minutes then comes back down?”
A prince had a curse put on him when he was a little boy. He could only speak two words every year. But, if he didn’t speak for a whole year, he would then be able to speak 4 words the next year and so on.
The woman always replied by saying,”We don’t need to spend any extra money on them airplanes, its to expensive. Ten dollars is ten dollars.
One day he met a princess named Josie and he wanted to say “My Princess”.
Tom, the pilot, said,” Larry, every year I hear you say you want to ride my airplanes, and every year Anna says it’s too expensive. I’ll make you a deal, if I do all of my flips and tricks with you in there with me, and you don’t say one word, I’ll give you the ride for free.
The next year he saw her he wanted to say “My princess, I love you”. The third year he saw her he wanted to say “My princess I love you, will you marry me?” But, the young prince, now growing older knew he would have to wait a couple more years.
Anna and Larry discussed it and decided they would take the deal. They got up in the air and Tom did all of his tricks and flips.
So, on the fifth year, excited to finally present his question, he visited the princess.
Tom said,”Larry I just knew you`d say something on that first flip, but you didn’t!
He approached her respectfully and asked, “JOSIE, MY PRINCESS, I LOVE YOU. WILL YOU MARRY ME?”
Larry replied,” I was going to say something when Anna fell out, but ten dollars is ten dollars.
And the princess said, “Pardon?”
