GOOD NEWS

Bonner Community Hospice HOSPICE FACTS Q: Is hospice only for people who are dying? A: Hospice is for patients whose condition is such that a doctor would not be surprised if the patient died within the next six months. This doesn’t mean the patient is going to die in the next six months--it simply means that he or she has a condition that makes dying a realistic possibility. Q: Who is best suited for hospice care? A: Hospice patients are those with very serious medical conditions. Usually they have diseases that are life threatening and make day-to-day living very uncomfortable physically, emotionally, or spiritually. Hospice specializes in easing pain, discomfort, and distress on all levels. The care provided by hospice is often helpful for conditions such as cancer, heart disease, COPD (emphysema), advanced dementia, or a general weakness and “failure to thrive.” Q: Isn’t using hospice the same as “giving up”? A: Not at all! Although it may be that you or your loved one’s condition has reached a point that a cure is not likely—or not likely enough to be worth the side effects of treatment—that does not mean there is nothing left to do. In fact, an emphasis on quality of life and easing pain and distress often allows the person to spend his or her last months focusing on the things that are ultimately the most important and meaningful. As one patient put it “I’d rather spend my time with my children and grandchildren than waste my limited time and energy driving to the treatment center and recovering beside the toilet bowl.” Far from giving up, hospice helps families truly live well and support each other during a stressful, but in the end very natural, family life passage. Q: When is the best time to start hospice care? A: Research has shown that hospice can increase both the

quality of life and how long a patient lives. Experts agree that at least two to three months of care is optimal. It is better to ask sooner rather than later so you do not regret having missed the support that hospice has to offer. Q: Should we wait for the doctor to suggest hospice? A: You can, but oddly enough, doctors often wait for families to bring it up. If you think you, or your loved one and family might benefit from the support of home visits from staff, ask your doctor if hospice might be something to consider now, or in the near future. Q: What is the hospice stance on Physician Assisted Suicide and euthanasia? A: Hospice neither prolongs life nor hastens death. Q: Who pays for hospice? A: If you, or your loved one has Medicare or Medicaid and meets hospice eligibility requirements, then the government will pay as much as 100% of the cost. In such a case, there is no deductible and no co-payment. Not only are the services of the hospice staff entirely covered, but medical supplies and prescriptions relating to the terminal illness are also covered. Individuals who do not have Medicare coverage but have coverage from private insurance generally also have coverage for Hospice services. Bonner Community Hospice also receives donations in memory of those who have passed away from their families and friends, and those donations go to provide care for Hospice clients. Bonner Community Hospice serves all patients regardless of their ability to pay. Help support Bonner Community Hospice by participating in the Rose Event. Buy a dozen roses for $20 and pick them up on November 1st. For more information call 208.265.1185.

The Great Outdoors The world has changed. Wii has replaced “Wheeeee!” Tweeting is no longer for the birds, and Blackberries aren’t for picking on a warm summer afternoon. Kids today spend twice as much time indoors than their counterparts two decades ago. But technology can be a great ally for families who want to spend more time in nature. NatureFind, National Wildlife Federation’s (NWF) recently redesigned and re-launched an online search tool that helps modern kids discover old-fashioned outdoor fun. NatureFind (www.nwf.org/naturefind) is a part of NWF’s Be Out There campaign, a mom-led movement to raise happier, healthier children with a lifelong appreciation for nature. NatureFind users can search by city, state or zip code to access outdoor adventures nationwide, including nature activities and events, trails, aviaries, wildlife preserves, regional parks, zoos and campsites. With NatureFind, families get detailed information that will help them explore nature up to 500 miles away or right around the corner. The next puddle-jumping excursion or fishing trip with grandpa is just a few clicks away. “NatureFind makes spending time outside easy for families,” says Rebecca Garland, Executive Director of NWF’s Be Out There campaign. “It puts the benefits of the great outdoors as close as your fingertips.” The benefits of green time to children’s minds and bodies can be seen immediately by the experts; their moms. “When we go outside, my kids become their best selves. Gone are the petty arguments about whose turn it is to go first or what to do next. Suddenly the kids are creative, digging in the dirt, picking up worms, jumping and laughing,” says Be Out There mom Renee Limon, co-founder of EnviroMom.com and Portland mother of two girls, ages 5 and 7. Each of the more than 9,200 locations and 30,000 events in the NatureFind database is accurately confirmed by a member of the NatureFind staff. Hundreds of new locations and events are added daily. To get started on your next family outdoor adventure, go to www.nwf.org/naturefind.

HEALTHY LIVING

Tips to Renew Skin’s Beauty HEALTHY SKIN SOLUTIONS

I

f you’re like most people, your skin does not rejuvenate itself each morning; you have to work hard at having beautiful skin. Weather conditions, the foods we eat, make-up, wrinkles, acne, blemishes, and other factors affect how our skin fares on a day-by-day basis. Use the solutions for life tips below to renew your skin beauty and look and feel young again. Beauty and Stress Stress weighs you down emotionally, mentally, and physically. It also affects your skin and is detrimental to your health. Someone under a heavy load of stress tends to have more skin lines at the mouth and forehead, crow’s feet around the eyes, and an overall “stressed” look. There are, however, solutions for life to help alleviate stress. Exercise daily and take time each day to do something fun. If you have children, throw a ball, read a book, or take a walk or bike ride with them. Avoid Sun Exposure Too much sun exposure on the face can do tremendous damage to your skin. Your facial skin is very sensitive and should be guarded with UV-protection sun blocker when you plan to be outdoors for a while.

Consult with a skin specialist to find out which makeup or beauty products are best for your type of skin. Just one visit may be worth it years down the road. Diet and Skin Beauty Your diet also affects your skin. Drinking plenty of water daily is a great way to keep your skin and complexion looking healthy and firm. Also, eat plenty of fruits and vegetables so your skin will get the vitamins and minerals it needs to stay healthy. Avoid smoking and drinking alcohol. Both can do horrible things to your skin. Sleep Well Another solution for life when it comes to skin beauty is to get plenty of sleep. Fatigue causes the skin around your eyes to sag. By getting adequate sleep each night, you’ll appear fresh and feel like new each morning. Remember: Clothing is important. Accessories are a must. But your skin will be with you for life! Use the above skin tips and solutions for life to add lasting beauty to your skin and enjoy healthy skin for life!

Choose Beauty Products Wisely Many people are picky when choosing their clothing; however, when it comes to buying beauty products or cosmetics - the cheaper the better. Unfortunately, the cheaper beauty products are not always best for your skin. Choose foundational and eye makeup that enhances your skin’s beauty. Also, cleanse your skin using facial care products that add moisture to your skin.

SENIOR FOCUS

Should Grandpa Still Be Driving? HELPING YOUR SENIOR FACE DIFFICULT LIFESTYLE CHANGES

S

ome of the issues involving helping your senior citizen parent or grandparent can be difficult and full of tough decisions. Seniors face unique medical and lifestyle issues that call upon them and those that love them to find solutions that they can live with. And it’s very common for senior citizens to live in denial about the effects of their advancing years and to accept the changes in the way they live that must happen for them to continue live in a safe and healthy way. Driving is just such an issue. For most adults, the ability to drive a car is an integral part of our sense of empowerment and freedom. We seldom think of what it would be like if we couldn’t just “jump in the car and go.” But that feeling of complete freedom to go where you want and when you want is such a deep part of how we all function that it seems inconceivable to any of us to lose that mobility and freedom. But for senior citizens, there will come a time when they will need to give up driving. The causes are many, but the most common reason that calls for senior citizens to stop driving is failing eyesight. While much can be done to preserve the eyesight of senior citizens, if their ability to see becomes a hazard behind the wheel, they will have to be told that its time to let that precious freedom go. So how do we help our loved one accept and then cooperate with a plan to reduce or eliminate their driving? You might be surprised that when it comes time for you as the child or caregiver of a senior citizen to talk to them about giving up driving, they may have already begun to think about it. Senior citizens are very aware of their physical condition. So while they may resist giving up the car or van, they may know deep

down that this time would come. Some other compelling reasons to take that step sooner rather than later are… • Doctor’s Orders. If the senior citizen’s doctor specifically directs that he/she cannot drive. The senior will often respect that directive even more than family advice. A doctor’s credibility goes a long way on this issue. • Their Own Safety. In the same way that no senior citizen wants to “fall and not get up”, the idea of being in an accident, which may cause serious injury resulting in painful recovery and possible permanent reduced freedom and mobility, is a compelling reason to turn the car keys over to someone else. • The Safety of Others. It’s easy to find news stories of a senior citizen who continued to drive only to be involved in an accident that caused injury or death to others, maybe even children. That prospect is so horrifying to a grandma or grandpa that they may choose to ground themselves then ever face that kind of guilt. • Savings. Getting rid of the car means no more upkeep, car payments, gas expense and auto insurance. Senior citizens are penny wise so that kind of savings can make a big difference. If your senior citizen comes to understand that accommodations can be made to help them get out and about, the loss of that car may not be a big deal. Public transportation or buses that community services centers send out to retirement villages can help senior citizens get out to the grocery store and to doctor’s appointments. And if their family pitches in to help drive grandma or grandpa around, not only do they lose the expense and liability of driving, they get more family time too. And that is a great incentive to give up driving and let others serve as their chauffeur.

many grand waterways and lakes now become apparent. Picnics are a favorite this time of year, and bikers and hikers seem to come out of the woodwork. Certainly, many agree that the best time of year for the phenomenal photo op is the Fall. While you can drive just a short distance in almost any direction to find great scenery, one of the best ways to see this Fall foliage is to drive the International Selkirk Loop. Sunset Magazine calls the International Selkirk Loop the “West’s Best New Scenic Drive” This 280-mile scenic drive is a meandering wander covering many of the most beautiful parts of North Idaho, Eastern Washington, and Southern British Columbia. The Idaho portion runs from Priest River, through Sandpoint and Bonners Ferry, to the border town of Porthill. If you’d like to try something different you can see the fall colors from a different perspective. Try out a lake cruise. A great way to see the leaves is the Fall Foliage Island Tour Lake Pend Oreille Cruises offer a fall cruise of the Clark Fork Delta. Cruise leaves from Kramer Marina in East Hope. Or, see it from the air. Take an aerial tour with Sandpoint Seaplane Service. There are few places like North Idaho, and few times of year like autumn. NIC At Sandpoint COMMUNITY INVITED TO NIC AT SANDPOINT OPEN HOUSE

B

rad and Lynda Scott saw something special about the building at 102 South Euclid Street when they first noticed the original Sandpoint High School building built in 1922.

“It was boarded up. It was this big derelict building sitting on the corner,” said Brad Scott. “It was in pretty rough shape, but the foundation was good. We were drawn to it. It certainly had a lot of potential. It just needed someone to put a lot of work into it.” That potential will be realized at the NIC at Sandpoint open house from 3 to 6pm Thursday, Nov. 1. The community is invited to explore North Idaho College’s new outreach location at the Sandpoint Business and Events Center with a selfguided tour and light refreshments in addition to a special choral presentation presented by the NIC and Sandpoint High School choirs at 7pm. NIC has had an outreach center in Bonner County since 2000, when the center opened in Sandpoint. In 2006, the center relocated to the Bonner Mall in Ponderay and is now returning to Sandpoint after NIC officials signed a five-year lease for the 8,000 square-foot property in May 2012. NIC President Joe Dunlap said the move opens up several opportunities for NIC as well as providing the Sandpoint community with a higher education presence. “It allows us to expand our offerings in Sandpoint, it creates greater capacity for students and it allows us to offer different programs,” Dunlap said. The new NIC at Sandpoint refurbished classrooms blend old-time charm with modern technology and provide room

to expand, including space for a much needed science lab. Being housed in the Sandpoint Events Center provides access to an auditorium that seats 450, a banquet room that holds 370, and a commercial kitchen. The move has also brought greater integration with Area Agency on Aging of North Idaho, which is now at home in the new center, and the Head Start readiness program that is located right across the street. “It’s still Sandpoint’s premier event center,” Scott said. “For now, we’re enjoying watching the evolution of the building back into a center for education.”

Sandpoint Volleyball: Poised for a Run to Become State Champs! By Patty Hutchens

hether you are a young girl or a grown woman, if you have a sister, you know just what a special relationship it can be. There are the sisters with whom one shares the same mother and father, and then there are friends who become so close that they share the same connection as sisters. The latter is precisely how one would refer to the senior girls on this year’s Sandpoint High School volleyball team. Leading the team are six seniors - Maddie Russo, Beth Lewis, Megan Rockwell, Teresa Young, Kelli Plaster and Maddie Suppinger. All of them, with the exception of Maddie Suppinger, have been together on the court for the last six years. It is a relationship each one treasures. Coach Karen Alsager, known as Coach Al to many, said the chemistry among these girls is fantastic. “They love to be together on and off the court,” she said. She describes the group as positive and hungry to win and said this team is poised for a state run.

The senior girls are leaders on their team and talking to them it is clear why they are successful. Each one of them attributes both their success on the court and the wise choices they have made through the challenges of the teenage years to the bond they share. “We are very good friends off the court and do everything together,” said Maddie Russo, who along with Megan Rockwell is a co-captain of this year’s team. “We are always picking each other up; we have each other’s back and we are always there for each other.” Maddie said there is a lot of talent on this year’s team and said the underclassmen have really shown their strengths. But it is those girls with whom she has played for so many years that help keep the team focused on their goal – making a run at the state championship. “We don’t have any drama,” said Maddie, who adds that because of the closeness she and her teammates share and the respect they have for one another, there is never any animosity among them on or off the court. This group of seniors has been to state volleyball playoffs before, but has yet to take home the championship trophy. That is something Alsager said she hopes to change this year, and if anyone should know what it takes to win, it is Coach Al. She was a top hitter for the University of Idaho from 1987 to 1990 and was a two time First Team AVCA AllNorthwest Region selection. In addition, Coach Al was October 2012 | SANDPOINT NEWSLINE  19

SANDPOINT VOLLEYBALL

Sandpoint Volleyball a two time First Team All-Big Sky honoree in 1989 and 1990. In 1989 Coach Al tied the Idaho school record with 513 kills, and then broke it the following year with 524. Twenty-two years later she remains fifth ranked all time for the school record. She also remains fifth ranked at University Of Idaho for her 4.75 kills per game, her 1416 career kills and her 68 double figure kill matches. She ranks sixth all time at Idaho for her 126 career service aces. Coach Al knows how important it is to have support both on and off the court. She said her mentor was her dad who was also a former coach. The two spent hours reviewing films and finding ways she could improve her game. Although it was something she did not particularly enjoy at the time, upon reflection she says they are some of her better memories. Like Maddie Russo, Coach Al recognizes the talent of not only the senior girls but also the younger players. In fact, she said the team’s biggest strength is its depth. “So far their biggest competition has been the starters being pushed by the back-ups,” she said. Senior Megan Rockwell said she is grateful for the support her teammates have shown her not only through sports, but through life in general. “We’ve been through a lot together,” said Megan. “We’ve had the same struggles and have grown together.” She adds that the trust that has grown among the girls throughout the years has made playing on the volleyball team even that much more enjoyable.

“We can always trust that we are all making good choices and that what we do off the court will not affect our playing,” said Megan. Beth Lewis said while the girls were not necessarily a close knit group before they began playing volleyball together, that quickly changed. “Our friendship grew from there,” she said. She echoes the others’ feelings when she says that the support her teammates give makes a huge difference on the court. Last year many of the girls decided to enter the Junior Miss Competition. Unlike volleyball which is a team sport, each girl was on her own to compete against the others for awards and scholarships. But these friends did not view it as a contest. “Junior Miss was not a competition for us,” said senior Kelli Plaster referring to her volleyball teammates. “We did it to be together and have a new experience together.” She adds that because she knows her friends so well, it helps the team as a whole while on the court. “We always seem to know exactly what the other person is going to do,” said Kelli. Looking ahead to next year, Kelli said it will be difficult to leave the girls to whom she has grown so close, but she takes comfort in knowing that no matter what they will always be there for one another. Teresa Young said when she first moved to Sandpoint in the fourth grade, she had difficulty making friends. It was not until she met this group of friends that she really began to feel she fit in.

“They made me gain confidence in myself,” said Teresa. “They like me for me and I can be myself.” Teresa agrees with the others when she said the friends are so in tune with another, being able to anticipate what the other will do, and it translates into success on the court. “We encourage one another but we also challenge each other,” she said. “We are a tight bunch and it would take a lot to ever break us apart.”

With the team about half way through its season, Coach Al said they need to defeat Lakeland and Moscow to make it the state playoffs. But she has no doubt that will happen. “This team has already shown they have what it takes to beat both teams handedly,” said Coach Al. “It’s not good enough just to get there; we want to compete and make a run at this.”

How Important is Pet Dental Care? CARING FOR YOUR PETS TEETH

D

ental care is an important part of caring for your pet. Just like humans, dogs have teeth that can cause problems if they are not cared for with a proper dental routine. You may have already noticed, but dogs can suffer from bad breath just like humans can. Your vet is an important part of this dental care. Ask your vet to show you how to brush your pets’ teeth properly. Your vet knows how to brush their teeth properly so your beloved pet doesn’t get gum disease or any of the other conditions associated with poor oral hygiene. You are going to need to spend some time finding the right toothbrush for your dog. You can use a child’s toothbrush, but it is recommended that you rather buy a special toothbrush for your pet. It will make brushing easier and will be worth the money. To buy a toothbrush you can visit your vet or local pet supply store. You might be surprised to see how many variations of pet toothbrushes and toothpaste’s there are. Rather ask for help if you are not sure about what kind to get. There are some rules for choosing the best brush for your dog. You need to make sure that the bristles are soft so they don’t damage the dog’s gums. You also need to make sure you choose the right sized brush (just make sure its’ not too big or too small for your dogs mouth). Lastly check that the handle is big enough for you to comfortably get a grip on the toothbrush.

can make your pet sick. Read the labels carefully and check that the toothpaste does not contain salt, detergents or enzymes as these are dangerous for your pet. There is a huge choice at most pet supply store’s so ask for help and read the labels carefully. You should be brushing your dogs’ teeth daily; but if you can’t manage that, once every second day should be fine. By doing this you will ensure that your dogs’ teeth will last well into old age; and of course his icky dog breath will improve. Roxy’s Mobile Dog Grooming We come to you! THE PARROT

One day a man went to an auction. While there, he bid on a parrot. He really wanted this bird, so he got caught up in the bidding. He kept on bidding, but kept getting outbid, so he bid higher and higher and higher. Finally, after he bid way more than he intended, he won the bid - the parrot was his at last! As he was paying for the parrot, he said to the auctioneer, “I sure hope this parrot can talk. I would hate to have paid this much for it, only to find out that he can’t talk!” “Don’t worry,” said the auctioneer, “He can talk. Who do you think kept bidding against you?”

SEA MONSTERS

Two sea monsters were swimming around in the ocean, looking for something to do. They came up underneath a ship that was hauling potatoes. Bob, the first sea monster, swam underneath the ship, tipped it over and ate everything on the ship. A little while later, they came up to another ship, again hauling potatoes. Bob again capsizes the ship and eats everything on board. The third ship they found was also hauling potatoes and Bob once again capsized it and ate everything. Finally his buddy Bill asked him, “Why do you keep tipping over those ships full of potatoes and eating everything on board?” Bob replied, “I wish I hadn’t, but I just can’t help myself once I start. Everyone knows you can’t eat just one potato ship.”
