COACH LASSEN served as the head coach for Sandpoint Bulldog varsity football from 1978-1982. Prior to that he served as the head coach for the JV football team from 19751977. He returned to Sandpoint football in 2011 as the Junior Tackle assistant coach. He returned to the varsity squad in 2012 as assistant head coach, defensive coordinator and linebacker coach.
Chris Lassen Assistant Head Coach
Prior to retiring in 2006, Lassen taught school for 38 years—30 of which were at Sandpoint High School. He served as coach for football and track, and as an administrator. His experience away from Sandpoint High School includes four years in an athletic director position and as a wrestling coach. Lassen currently spends his time as an executive advisor at Pneumex Technologies in Sandpoint as well as farming on his ranch, homesteaded by his great grandfather. He also owns
a small logging operation. Coach Lassen is happy to be coaching with Satini Puailoa again as he says they share the same philosophy in coaching the young athletes in the community. “It is an opportunity for me to give back to the community,” said Coach Lassen. “And I want to pay it forward the same way I was helped in life changing ways by football and my coaches.” His goal is also to instill discipline and trust so the young men can be successful on and off the field. Words of wisdom to his team: “Being part of a brotherhood completes the development of becoming a man; and football will be a conduit for this to happen.”
COACH MAUEL was a newcomer to Sandpoint High School football in 2012, but he certainly came with a great deal of experience. An English teacher at Tahoma Junior High School in the Seattle area, Coach Mauel took a leave of absence to come to Sandpoint and assist his friend of over 10 years, Coach Puailoa. He now teaches English at SHS. “Satini and I have the same philosophy in terms of coaching and keeping kids at the center,” said Mauel who said he is looking forward to working with the kids again this year. Coach Mauel graduated from Pacific Lutheran University in 1988 and for the 2 years prior to joining the Bulldogs served as a secondary coach for his alma mater’s football team. Prior Paul Mauel to that Mauel held the position of a graduate assistant under Defensive Coordinator University of Washington Hall of Fame coach Don James from 1989-1991. There he was part of a staff that saw many of its players go on to play in the NFL. Coach Mauel also coached Senio Kelemete during his tenure at Evergreen High School. Kelemete was drafted in the fifth round by the Arizona Cardinals. Words of wisdom to his team: “Make the big time where you are now. So many people look to the future, but life is where you are at this moment. Enjoy the journey.”
STEVE RUSSO served as the head coach for the SHS freshman team in 2011 prior to joining the Varsity coaching staff in 2012. He also coached the SMS 8th grade team, now the senior class, an experience he counts as one of the most rewarding seasons in his now 19th year of coaching. “Watching kids achieve more than they ever thought they could by beating a team that had gone undefeated the previous six years was a thrill,” said Russo.
Steve Russo Offensive Coach & Running Backs
Russo started coaching in 1990 in Poway, CA. He coached at his alma mater Poway High School, a Division One Palomar League School and at the Bishop’s School in La Jolla, CA. One team he coached at Bishops won 29 straight games, another highlight in his nearly two decades of coaching experience.
Russo said he has worked with kids his whole adult life and enjoys being around them and doing his best to be a positive role model in their lives. “It’s pretty simple in my mind,” said Russo. “Teach them a few things that they can carry with them their whole life and that will ultimately make them better human beings.” Words of wisdom to his team: “There are three things that Coach Russo believes are important in life: hard work pays off; do it right or don’t do it at all; and nothing in life is free or easy.
Satini Puailoa Head Coach Head Coach Satini Puailoa is no stranger to fans of Sandpoint High School football. Before arriving in Sandpoint in the mid1990s, Coach Puailoa served as the Head Coach for both Montebello High School in California from 1981-1985 and Santa Barbara High School from 19861994. He began his coaching career in Sandpoint in 1994 where he coached until stepping down in 2004. He led the Sandpoint Bulldogs to a state championship during the 1997 season and they finished in the runner-up position in 2003. During the ten years that Coach led the Sandpoint Bulldogs, he posted a 63-37 record. Puailoa returned to the helm as head coach of the Bulldogs in 2012. In 2005 Coach Puailoa appeared on the television show “ESPN Bound for Glory.” Coach Puailoa currently serves as the department chair for the physical education department at Sandpoint High School and is a physical education instructor. Coach Puailoa says the driving force behind his desire to coach is simply to help young men develop into better men. He is looking forward to witnessing firsthand this group of young men grow and develop. He said he especially enjoys seeing them participate in the journey of chasing perfection and achieving excellence. Words of wisdom to his team: “Become a servant to your teammates, school, and community. The more you help others, the more you will benefit.”

S HS F OOT B AL L 2 0 1 4 A 1993 GRADUATE of Sandpoint High School, Coach Tajan went on to play offensive tackle for the University of Idaho from 1993-1997. After graduating, Coach Tajan returned to Sandpoint High School where he has been a physical education instructor for the last 16 years. During that time, Coach Tajan has coached a variety of sports.
He served as Sandpoint High School varsity offensive line coach from 1998-2005, was the offensive line coach for the 8th grade Sandpoint Junior Tackle in 2011 and has also coached middle school and freshman basketball as well as varsity track. Coach Tajan said his desire to be involved with the SHS football program stems from many areas, but is largely due to the fact that Coach Crosby Tajan Puailoa’s program and philosophy is one with which he strongly Offensive Line Coach agrees. “It is always an honor to be part of his staff.” Coach Tajan is anxious to work with these youth and says they are kids who are hungry for success and are willing to put forth the work it takes to achieve it. Coach Tajan is married to his wife Morgan, who is also an alumni of Sandpoint High School. They have two daughters: Tacey and Willow. “It’s exciting to teach and coach players who are so willing to learn and absorb practical information and techniques that will actually allow them success,” said Coach Tajan. Words of wisdom to his team: “Finish! Always give it your very best and commit to giving your best work to the very end no matter the score, the situation or the event. Always finish strong and leave your mark as one consisting of great effort, attention to detail and execution.”
RAY MILLER began coaching freshman football in the early 1970s. In the late 70’s he and Coach Lassen teamed up to coach the Sandpoint Bulldog Junior Varsity team. Miller later became the offensive coordinator under then head varsity coach Lassen. In addition to football, Ray Miller also served as the Sandpoint Bulldog’s head wrestling coach for 15 years.
COACH KNOWLES is a name familiar to those who have followed the Sandpoint High School bulldogs. A 1966 graduate of Sandpoint High School, Coach Knowles was inducted into the Sandpoint Bulldog Athletic Hall of fame in 2006 for football, track and wrestling. He started his coaching career at Wallace High School and his coaching experience with Sandpoint High School has spanned two decades, to include every state playoff game including three championship games and the state title in 1997. Coach Knowles retired from teaching in 2005. When asked why he wanted to be involved again with coaching, he sums it up in two words: Satini Puailoa. “Coach Puailoa is a proven program builder and places the student athletes at the center of the program. He has the unique ability to bring quality adults and young adults together and build a team concept and helps everyone find personal achievements and confidence.”
In the mid-1980s Miller took a break from coaching in order to spend more time with his two daughters. In 1990 Ray Miller returned to coach 8th grade football and later moved up to coach varsity with Coach Puailoa. Ray Miller retired from both teaching and coaching in 2003 and served as Mayor of Sandpoint from 2002 to 2008. A bulldog through and through, Coach Ray Miller spent 30 years teaching Economics and A.P. Government at Sandpoint High School.

“After November some of these seniors will never snap up a chin strap again,” said Miller. “The memories they create here will stay with them their whole life and I want those memories to be great.” Words of wisdom to his team: “Pros are people who do jobs well—even when they don’t feel like it.”
Words of wisdom to his team: “Don’t miss one moment of this opportunity. Be involved in every part of it. High school football only happens once in your life and it goes by fast. This is an opportunity for you to test the limits of your physical and mental toughness in a safe and controlled environment. The adults you are with truly care about you.”
IF ANYONE SHOULD know if Coach Puailoa can motivate and bring passion to his players, it is Shane Franks. “The passion I have, I got from him,’” said Franks, referring to Coach Puailoa. “He had a huge effect on me.” A Sandpoint High School graduate, Shane was a soccer player until his freshman year of high school. He decided to give football a try and in his four years under Coach Puailoa, he went from a 140 lb. soccer player to a 220 lb. first team all-state nose guard. So, when Coach Puailoa asked him to join his coaching staff, Franks did not hesitate.
Shane Franks Inside Defensive Line Coach
“This is the program I grew up with,” said Franks. After graduating from SHS, Frank served in the United States Army for seven years. “My goal is to go to school, become a teacher and coach football,” said Franks, whose stepfather Chris Lassen is also a coach on this year’s staff and has coached with Coach Puailoa for many years. Shane looks forward to helping the team of young men develop into the best players they can be. “I am excited to take the journey with them,” said Franks. Words of wisdom to his team: “Give 100 percent of yourself all the time in every aspect of your life.”
Jarrett Robson Equipment Manager JARRETT IS A 1997 graduate of Sandpoint High School and has served as the equipment manager for the last 16 years. A big part of his job is to ensure that all the players have the equipment they need for games and practices. He enjoys working with the current coaching staff and interacting with the athletes. Words of wisdom to his team: “Remember that how you prepare yourself here at Sandpoint High School determines how you carry yourself out there in the real world.”

S HS FO O TB A L L 2 014 SCOTT ALBERTSON is an experienced Sandpoint coach. A 1986 graduate of Sandpoint High School, Coach Albertson was a three year starter in the position of free safety for Whitworth College. After graduating from college, Coach Albertson served as an assistant coach on the Sandpoint High School varsity football team under then head coach Bill Barlow. He left the program when Barlow resigned but returned to coaching in 1994 to assist his brother, Tom Albertson, with the freshman program. After coaching at the freshman level for 2 years, Coach Albertson then moved up to help coach the varsity team under Coach Puailoa He coached the secondary until 1997—the year that Sandpoint won Scott Albertson the state title. He then chose to step down to spend more time with Defensive Backs his children. Albertson, who is the owner and agent of Albertson Insurance Services in Sandpoint, said he is looking forward to being an instrumental part of building the football program back to the high level of competition it was known for in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Coach Albertson said that he and his fellow coaches have a history together, and he enjoys being part of such a highly committed coaching staff as that which will take the field this fall. One aspect of coaching he enjoys the most is watching the young men grow and develop a confidence in themselves. Since Albertson left coaching several years ago, he has mentioned to many people in the community that he missed getting to know the young men in the community on a more personal level. “Coaching allows this and that is what I look forward to the most,” said Albertson. Words of wisdom to his team: “Never give up no matter how difficult the situation seems. Perseverance will prosper.”
Vince Huntsberger Defensive Backs THIS IS THE FIRST YEAR on the SHS Bulldog coaching staff for Vince Huntsberger who brings with him a great deal of experience. A graduate of Libby High School, Coach Huntsberger had a remarkable college career as safety for the University of Montana and went on to play one year of arena football. His coaching experience includes one year at the University of Montana and one year at Central Missouri State. A few games into the Bulldogs’ season, Coach Huntsberger said he is thoroughly enjoying the experience. The biggest challenge thus far has been learning the totality of (defensive coordinator) Coach Mauel’s defense. But with a win under their belt in Lewiston, the team is gaining confidence and he is pleased. “I love to be able to teach the kids and to coach them,” said Huntsberger.
IF YOU HAVE followed Sandpoint football for a long time, Coach Al Beard is no stranger to you. Although it is his first year coaching with this group, he was the coach for wide receivers and kickers at Sandpoint High School from 1994 to 1998. And you know what that means? He was part of the coaching staff when the Bulldogs won the State Championship in 1997! Football has always been a part of Coach Beard’s life. Starting at age 8 he played Pop Warner football and continued through high school. His positions included defensive end / outside linebacker and offensive fullback / running back.
“I enjoy everything about coaching at SHS - the players, fellow coaches and staff, the town and community,” said Coach Beard. “We get to teach the game we love to young student athletes, in such a beautiful place with great community support.”
As an emergency room physician at Bonner General Health and the father of a two year old and newborn, Coach Huntsberger’s, or “Doc” as the players refer to him, days are extremely busy. But so are his nights. He works in the emergency room from 8pm to 8am to be sure he is available to work with the team and has not missed a practice yet.
Like anything worth pursuing, there are challenges. “I think the biggest challenge coaching football is getting players to buy into the systems being taught for the first time, development of player fundamentals and position responsibilities, and taking the "I" out of team,” said Coach Beard. “Playing the game as one cohesive unit verses eleven individuals on the field.”
“My goal for the season is to help the boys improve play by play and to help make them not only better football players, but better people,” said Coach Huntsberger.
His goal for the team is to improve each day, to ensure they always put forth their best effort and to be the best teammate they can be. “If we do these things, we will become champions on the field and in life.”
Words of wisdom to “Play hard and have fun.”
Coach Beard began coaching in the late 1970s and served as head coach for youth football for 15 years in California. He also served as a high school varsity assistant for three years in California before coming to Sandpoint in the 1990s. And now that he has returned he could not be happier.

Give your best effort!” MARTIN RODRIGUEZ has been a longtime Bulldog fan. His son, Anthony, played under Coach Puailoa at Sandpoint High School several years ago and now his son Marcus will have the same opportunity. Martin, owner of Martin’s Alignment Center and Sandpoint Mobile Tire, coached flag football for three years before moving onto Sandpoint Junior Tackle where he served as head coach. He currently serves as President of the Board for the Junior Tackle program in Sandpoint.
Martin Rodriguez Assistant Coach
When Coach Puailoa was offered the head coach position at Sandpoint High School, Martin knew it was a team with which he wanted to be involved. The kids deserve the best, said Coach Rodriguez, and Puailoa’s program helps the kids become bigger, better, faster, and stronger. He looks forward to bringing the fun back onto the football field while at the same time teaching the kids that by reaching deep down and giving it all they have through hard work and commitment, they can do anything they set their mind to. Words of wisdom to his team: “Give it 110 percent both on and off the field.”

THE JOURNEY IS THE REWARD A visit with Head Coach Satini Puailoa. By Patty Hutchens. WHEN ASKED TO PREDICT the outcome of this year’s Sandpoint High School football season, Head Coach Satini Puailoa will not talk about wins and losses. “It’s not about the destination. It’s about the journey and how do we get better every day,” said the SHS coach who has a winning record at the school of 70 – 53 along with 7 playoff appearances. Puailoa shares that his focus is on the development of not only young athletes, but of the students’ moral character and establishing a good work ethic in the young men he coaches. “The rest then falls into place,” he said. It is Puailoa’s philosophy and his commitment to his players that had 50 to 60 young men showing up all summer at 8 am to lift weights and
condition at the high school weight room. Anyone who has a teenager knows that getting him or her out of bed and out the door by 8 am during the summer months is no small feat. Since returning to the helm two years ago, Puailoa has seen the
players continue to grow and bond as a team. “Relationships have to be built. They don’t just happen.” The players have been through a great deal together, both adversities and celebrations, and that has translated into a group of young men who Puailoa says get along very well. While some of his players may have gone into the season as starters, Coach Puailoa said that could change each week. “Several of these (starters) could change tomorrow. There’s a lot of battling going on,” said Coach Puailoa. “Each day there’s a different kid that emerges.” Puailoa and his staff have been amazed at the level of competition they have seen already this year among the players. “The good news is we are going to play a lot of kids this year,” said
Puailoa of his large pool of talent from which to choose. Coach Puailoa said the squad he has assembled has many strengths it will bring to the game this year, but at the top of that list is the team’s experience, leadership and the commitment the

players have developed over the last couple of years. His team’s greatest weakness? According to Puailoa it is proving they can get over the hump. But he is optimistic, and so are the players after their home opener against Post Falls where they battled the 5A team to a 42 – 39 loss. Following that game, the buzz around Sandpoint was that this year’s team is like none other in recent years. It has taken time, but the players have turned the corner. For the last two years Puailoa said he has worked on developing positive attitudes in the young men. “We teach them how to prepare, how to commit, and how to stay focused,”
explained Puailoa. “For anyone, not just teenagers, that’s a long drawn out process.” He explains that the process is one that is also perplexing. “Do you win and then have great camaraderie or do you have great camaraderie and then win?” questioned Puailoa. Coach Puailoa and his staff have focused on developing what he refers to as the “inner game.” Each player is given a playbook, but it includes much more than just Xs and Os. It also has life lessons that the coaching staff sets time aside a

couple times each week to discuss as a team and in small groups. “It is geared towards helping the players see what they need to do to not only be a better player, but how can they also be a better teammate. We want each player to start thinking in those terms and once you do, you create magic,” said Puailoa. Some of the lessons include topics such as what it means to be a self-starter, defining “class,” what is a champion’s manifesto, and believing in miracles. “Everything we do is about trying to find the good. Winning is just a byproduct,” said Puailoa. Each grade level has a leadership group. If a player does not show up at practice, the leaders of the class are in contact to see what they can do to assist that teammate. “They don’t punish them, they see what they can do to help them,” said Coach Puailoa. The team makes it a point to end each day with finding the good. And so far there is a lot of good to be found. “The biggest change I see this year as opposed to the previous two years is that these guys are paying more attention. They want to do well and they know what they have to do,” said Coach. “They are competing together as a group.” He said the players are finally able to see the ripple effect as it relates to the big picture. They realize that if they do not do their job on and off the field, the consequences extend to the team as a whole. “They do not accept failure as an option.”

The students are progressing more each day and seeing the football practices, weightlifting sessions, and training as opportunities as opposed to chores. It is seeing that evolution that Coach Puailoa loves about his job. “I love working with student athletes and giving them the tools they need to develop into successful young men,” he said. So as you head out to Memorial Field to cheer on the Bulldogs this season, pay close attention to not only what is taking place on the field, but on the sidelines as well. As the players support and learn from one another, Coach Puailoa predicts that cohesiveness is sure to translate to success as the team travels on its journey. “We’ll catch the magic along the way,” said Puailoa.

MEMORIAL FIELD SHERWIN WILLIAMS CREATES AN ARTIST’S CANVAS. BY PATTY HUTCHENS. Pictures of Memorial Field paintings by Jeff Byers.
ONE OF THE MANY THINGS that people love about Sandpoint is our sense of community and the traditions that people who live and visit here come to rely upon. After all, it’s those traditions that make it feel like home. One such tradition when it comes to Sandpoint Football is the homecoming game. And it’s not just because royalty is crowned and alumni return to watch the big game. It’s also the anticipation of seeing what the piece of art that is painted on the field will depict.
For 20 years Jesse Watson and Jeff Byers have volunteered their time prior to the homecoming game to transform the field into a piece of art that reflects the Bulldog spirit. “It started in 1994, and they did it for the last game of the season when we were playing for a playoff berth,” explained SHS head coach Satini Puailoa, who was in his first stint with SHS football at the time. While many have thought that it was a highly guarded secret, the truth is the two do not make their decision on the painting until the day before they take the field to create it.
“Sometimes Coach Puailoa will have an idea of what he wants, but usually we come up with it,” said Jesse who along with Jeff will brainstorm ideas, make a sketch and bring it to Coach the day before the big game. As if Coach Puailoa isn’t hyped up enough in anticipation of the game, Jesse laughs as he recalls the occasions they have presented Coach with a sketch that may not be totally acceptable to all attendees – just to get a reaction from him. They then show Coach Puailoa their actual intended sketch. “We have to be respectful of the other teams,” said Jesse, who adds they have to keep their creative

The Homecoming game has many many traditions, among them the Homecoming Royalty.
side in check at times. Examples of some of the more memorable works of art include one year when the Bulldogs played a Canadian team. “We painted a bulldog biting a hockey stick in half,” said Jesse. Then there was the one that intertwined a current event with Bulldog fever. The year that NFL player Michael Vick was arrested for dogfighting, fans arrived to see a painting of a bulldog tearing a Michael Vick jersey apart. “It’s nice when we can have something that’s a hot topic that we can use,” said Jeff. “We also get a lot of ideas from the college ranks.” That includes the year they did the Eye of the Bulldog as a take on LSU’s Eye of the Tiger. None of this would be possible if it was not for the generosity of the local Sherwin-Williams store who each year donates up to $400 worth of paint. Store Manager Marty Eden said it typically takes about 25 to 30 gallons of black, red and white paint for the entire project. Eden said they have been donating the paint since the beginning. Coach Puailoa had come in to purchase paint for his personal use and the conversation began. “We want to do something to help out,” said Eden who adds that the school district purchases a lot of their paint from them so it made sense. Eden said that he too enjoys the anticipation of what the final product will look like, and in the rare occasions he cannot attend the game, he makes it
a point to visit the field and see the finished product. Jesse and Jeff get a great deal of help creating the masterpiece. Many of the coaches will fill in the lines of what Jesse has outlined on the field. And because there is often a Junior Varsity game the night prior to the Homecoming game, they at times cannot get on the field to start painting until 10pm. That translates into a long night finishing as late as 3am on occasion. But that doesn’t seem to bother them.
The year that NFL player Michael Vick was arrested for dogfighting, fans arrived to see a painting of a bulldog tearing a Michael Vick jersey apart.
“We have a good time out there,” said Jesse, who in recent years has had his two sons, Justin and Kyle, help paint. There have been challenges along the way, including inclement weather that has required a touch up to the paint the afternoon of the game, and also the challenge of angles. “It’s totally different seeing it from above than from an angle on the field” explained Jesse of the necessity of having someone in the press box help guide the painters. But in spite of the challenges, it has turned out perfectly every year much to the delight of the fans. As with any tradition, it would be sad to see it end. But Jesse, Jeff, and the crew at Sherwin-Williams do not plan on letting that happen. “As long as they want us to do it, we’ll be there,” said Jeff.
Another favorite Sandpoint tradition is ringing the victory bell - something the Bulldogs hope to do much of this season!

behind the scenes at barlow stadium. Volunteers help make Friday night football a hometown tradition. By Patty Hutchens.
ASK ANY SANDPOINT High School football player what they love most about the game, and a common response is “Playing under the Friday night lights!” It is not only an exciting time for the players, but for the entire community. Many of us plan our weekends around the home games at Barlow Stadium. It is truly a community event. While our attention is focused on the players, their opponent, and what is taking place on the field, there are many behind the scenes that work hard and volunteer their time to make SHS football games the tradition they are today. And these volunteers do not typically commit their time for just one or two years, many have set aside Friday night during the fall for decades to do their part for Sandpoint. For the past 37 years, Ron Hanson
208.263.9531 612 Pine Street | Sandpoint www.sunrental-inc.com
has been the voice of the Bulldogs as we cheer on the red and white at Barlow Stadium. “How about those Bulldogs!” has been his signature phrase for years. And it all started when Ron was asked to fill in for someone who could not finish out the season as the announcer. Ron’s payment for his service? Delivery of his dinner to the announcer’s booth by local Shriner Chuck Schoonover, another dedicated volunteer who has spent years behind the barbecue cooking for all the fans! After 37 years Ron has retired from his volunteer position this season and will certainly be missed in the announcer’s booth.
it’s not just at the football games; Nancy also is at many other Sandpoint High School sporting events volunteering her time. She began in about 1983 when her own kids were attending SHS, realizing that the kids knew when she was there and appreciated it.
One person that everyone sees as they enter the gates is the friendly and familiar face of former SHS teacher Nancy Miller. She has been taking tickets and stamping hands for over 30 years. And
And although it’s been over 30 years, don’t expect Nancy to stop any time soon. “I will continue to do it as long as it’s fun and I feel like I’m being useful, and the AD still wants me to.”
Bill Pagano MVP 1981
“I took over organizing when Jack Dyck was the AD (Activities Director),” said Nancy. “I continue to do it because it is fun to see parents and former students.” She adds that now sometimes the parents are also former students. “At the volleyball game the other day, I saw one of our former neighbors who was there filming his granddaughter!”

The Honor Guard has been a tradition at SHS football games for several decades.
And what about those nights when you cannot make it to the Bulldog game? Chris Chatburn and Bob Witte make sure that you don’t miss a play. They broadcast each game, making the fans feel as though they are right there and part of the action. Their play by play and commentary is something that has families gathered around the radio anxiously listening for what will happen next. It’s the next best thing to being there! Our community has also been blessed by the presence of the Honor Guard at each of our home games. Prior to his death in 2011, Sandpoint resident Bill Fournier was an integral part of the Sandpoint High School football games where he served as a member of the Honor Guard for 51 years. Bob Johnson was also a member of the Honor Guard for over 50 years until he turned the job over for others to carry on the tradition two years ago.
Have a GREAT season Bulldogs!
“I always enjoyed taking the flag out to the field and having people respect it,” said Johnson, who recalls many years ago when they simply raised the flag on the flagpole - until the band leader suggested marching onto the field. Bob began serving as the Honor Guard at the football games when his children were in school. “I figured I was going to the game anyway so why not carry the flag. After all, what better way to see the game!” Over the five decades he has served, Bob said he did not miss many of the home games. “I’ve gone through three generations of kids,” he proudly recalls. Having just celebrated his 90th birthday, Bob still attends the games and cheers the Bulldogs on from the stands. He is confident that this year will be a good one. “The boys played one heckuva game,” he said of the
season opener. Among others who have helped to contribute to the success of each home football game are Bob and Ryan Moore, who serve as the time and score keepers; Dwight Sheffler who has served as the spotter in the booth with Hanson for over 30 years,; and Cliff Irish and the “chain gang” crew. While we may be focused on the players and the game on Friday nights, it is important to stop and acknowledge those who help make great memories for these young athletes and the community as a whole. Thank you to all who give of their time to help make Sandpoint High School Football one of the favorite hometown traditions! GO BULLDOGS!

THE FRIENDS OF MEMORIAL FIELD is a team of community volunteers who have joined together to build for the future and fund new and expanded grandstands for Memorial Field. MISSION STATEMENT: Fostering a vibrant, healthy community through historic preservation, access, and ongoing improvements of War Memorial Field. VISION: To build new grandstands and other facilities to ensure continuing access to War Memorial Field for school and community athletics programs, local and regional cultural events and enhancement of the community of Sandpoint. The Friends of Memorial Field team is leading the campaign to renew and support this community treasure. Join us! For more information, contact admin@friendsofmemorialfield.org
IF YOU’VE EVER STEPPED onto the Field to cheer for our teams, commemorate our graduates, or drink in the sounds and sights of our festivals - then you know the magic of Memorial Field: the astounding views, the exhilaration of great entertainment, and the deep pleasure of making cherished memories. This is where we greet neighbors, exchange news, make friends. AND WE CELEBRATE TOGETHER. War Memorial Field was built and opened in 1946 in memory of Bonner County Servicemen and women lost in wars from WWI on. A memorial dedicated to all Bonner County soldiers is located at the east entrance to the park. The grandstands were opened in 1948, following a community-wide fundraising drive, and the structure was christened Barlow Stadium in honor of beloved SHS Coach Cotton Barlow.

The raffle raised over $54,000, helping players procure improved and safer equipment, reduce the out-of-pocket cost of attending football camp, and help make it feasible for more kids to be involved.
The 1972 Dodge Dart donated by Gary Vanhorn.
TAKING A CHANCE SHS football car raffle a huge success. By Patty Hutchens. IT IS QUICKLY BECOMING a tradition in the world of Sandpoint football. Players from junior tackle to varsity don their football jerseys and hit the streets in the month of May to sell raffle tickets for a chance to win a vintage vehicle. In addition to paying five dollars for a chance to win, purchasers have the satisfaction of knowing they are helping to support the Sandpoint High School football program. This year the car was a 1972 Dodge Dart Swinger. The raffle raised over $54,000, helping players procure improved and safer equipment, reduce the out-of-pocket cost of attending football camp, and help make it feasible for more kids to be involved. But there were more than just individuals who purchased tickets. Several businesses also stepped up to donate to the cause. This year a total of twelve businesses and individuals purchased blocks of tickets to help in the fundraising efforts.
Among them are: Nick Pierce, from Pierce Auto Center; Brent and Nicole Eacret from the Alpine Shop; Chad Moore from 3 Bee Honey; Bill and Amanda Hiatt of Riverside Auto Center; Lisa Hooper from Liaison Catering; Corey and Lindsay Coon; Tim Bonine of Mountain View Family Medicine; Matt Burrows of Litehouse Foods, Inc.; Nichol and Michael Timothy of StudentAthleteWorld.com; Ken Pearlstein of Insight Distributing; Rod Engel of Schweitzer Mountain Resort; Carolyn Gleason; NAPA Auto Parts and Martin’s Alignment. Thank you to all of you and stay tuned for more information on the 2015 raffle!

“I STARTED DURING COACH PUAILOA’S SECOND YEAR OF COACHING (AT SHS),” SAID JARRETT. “HE NEEDED SOMEONE RELIABLE SO I WENT IN THERE AND TOOK CARE OF BUSINESS.” BUT DURING THE 2006 SEASON WHEN HE WAS NOT ABLE TO BE IN SANDPOINT, HE REALIZED THE TASK OF EQUIPMENT MANAGER HAD BECOME A PART OF HIM. “I MISSED IT LIKE NO OTHER,” SAID JARRETT. “I CALLED COACH ALL THE TIME TO CHECK ON THE BOYS.” Equipment Manager Jarrett Robson purchased this trailer with his own funds to make his job of transporting all the equipment to and from games more efficient.
JARRETT ROBSON
BY PATTY HUTCHENS. Photos courtesy Loraine Lassen.
HE IS AT EVERY GAME enthusiastically running up and down the sidelines attending to the players’ needs and jogging onto the field during the breaks to ensure the guys are hydrated. As the Equipment Manager for the football team, Jarrett Robson has been a fixture at all the Sandpoint High School football games for nearly 20 years. Since 1995, when he was a junior at SHS, Robson has faithfully served as the “go to guy” for all the players. With the exception of 1997 when he was attending school in Michigan and 2006 when he was working out of the area, Jarrett has worked hard and has become someone upon whom the players and coaches rely. “I called Coach all the time to check on the boys.” While coaches have come and gone, Jarrett is the one member of the staff who has been a constant. And because of this, he has witnessed firsthand various coaching styles along the way. His impression of what this season will bring? It can be summed up in one word. Success!

Dorris was 8-2 and 6-5 over the two seasons he coached, but resigned over differences with the administration, according to a 2006 Spokesman Review article. Jarrett said the main differences he witnessed between Coach Dorris and Coach Puailoa was that Dorris tended to be more of a defensive coach. “Dorris tried to continue the program which Coach Puailoa had started,” reflected Jarrett. “But the main difference between them was that Coach Puailoa is more of an offensive coach and Coach Dorris was more defense.” Following Coach Dorris’ tenure was Coach Mike Mitchell, who also served as Assistant Principal at Sandpoint High School. From Jarrett’s perspective, those two roles were difficult for one person to perform, but Mitchell did a good job and brought the team to State. “Coach Mitchell was not able to emphasize the weight lifting program like the other coaches,” said Jarrett, who adds that the time commitment Mitchell’s role as assistant principal required did not allow him to spend time in the weight room like Coach Puailoa does. “But Coach Mitchell loved working with the kids.”
“Coach Puailoa has brought a foundation,” said Jarrett. He said use of the Sandpoint based Pneumax training program, which includes high speed treadmills, vibration platforms and a back machine, has not only helped increase the players’ strength, speed and fitness but also helped reduce injuries. “Coach Puailoa has a vision and knows what it takes to get there,” said Jarrett. “But he needs the right people and tools to get there and the fitness program is making that impact.” Over 19 years Jarrett has stood by the SHS football team through its ups and downs, but has never been as impressed as he is today. “From where it was to what it has evolved to… WOW!” exclaimed Jarrett. “It’s fascinating to watch.” While he first served as Equipment Manager under Coach Puailoa, who returned to the coaching helm two years ago, Jarrett has also worked with Sean Dorris and Mike Mitchell, both of whom brought different philosophies and coaching styles.
It is Coach Puailoa’s emphasis on building strength that Jarrett believes will be the key to the team’s success. Puailoa or one of his assistants has faithfully been at the weight room throughout the summer vacation and after school so that students can come and work out, something Jarrett believes has resulted in less injuries and stronger and faster athletes. While Jarrett enjoys his role as equipment manager, he also enjoys being a mentor to the many football players and encourages them to succeed not just on the field but in the classroom as well. “I tell the kids all the time that there is a correlation between playing football and school. Your helmets, cleats, and pads are tools to help you play the game of football,” said Jarrett. “Then I turn that around and tell them their books, papers, and pencils are their tools for success in school.” He tells them when it comes to Friday night’s game that is their exam. It is important to show up prepared, know the plays and have all your equipment ready to go. Jarrett is excited about this season and the success he says it is sure to bring. He is glad to be along for the ride. “It is great to be with the players and the coaches,” said Jarrett who enjoys the camaraderie among the team. “I love what I do.”

COMMUNITY DONATIONS A big thanks from the EMADs! By Patty Hutchens. WITH BUDGET CUTS and school districts struggling to make ends meet, it sometimes becomes difficult for athletic programs to fulfill their wish list. But thanks to community businesses and organizations, the Sandpoint High School 2014 Bulldog football team has been able to procure some much needed items.

Tom Puckett and Teague Mullen of Puckett & Teague – Century 21 Riverstone donated a used 42-inch HDTV to the Hogs (the offensive line) for film review. “Hog Theater is now big time,” said offensive line coach Crosby Tajan. “A big thanks to them!” The booster club for Sandpoint High School athletics, the Bulldog Bench, also made a $5,000 donation to help pay for a telescoping end-zone camera tri-pod system, something that the coaches have wanted for the last two years. “This is a major film capture tool to help our EMADs get better,” said Tajan. Players can review the film not only at school, but also from their own homes, something that many players enjoy.
Love to Smile.
Another donation that will help players is that of a weather proof storage box which was donated by Leanna Bandy and Home Depot. It helps keep the equipment safe, secure and conveniently located near the practice field. A huge THANK YOU from the SHS Bulldogs!

It is proven that if a student has found the right post-secondary fit, they are more likely to stay at that school and graduate in a reasonable amount of time with the least amount of costs.
HIGH SCHOOL. It’s the time in life when young adults are faced with life-changing decisions. What college will they attend? Can they qualify for scholarships? How do they find out about those scholarships? And what if the student wants to continue in college with athletics? Navigating through the world of post high school education can be overwhelming. But there are organizations that can help. And the good news is that a couple of them are based right here in Sandpoint. One organization is Student Athlete World. Sandpoint residents Mike and Nichol Timothy purchased the Idaho and Eastern Washington franchise a couple of years ago and are helping student athletes explore the world of college athletics. They meet one-on-one with the student and his or her family as well as each student’s coaches. With the assistance of Student Athlete World’s scouting staff, most of whom are
former college coaches, they create a customized recruiting plan that markets the student to hundreds, sometimes thousands, of college coaches and programs. They stress the fact that this program is not just for the all-star athlete who wants to play at a Division I college. “It’s for anyone who wants to play (college athletics),” said Nichol. The company offers a package that includes shooting, editing, and distribution of a highlight video that shows the player’s talent and progression. Their staff of qualified coaches will evaluate the film and provide feedback that will enable the athlete to be sure they are targeting the correct schools. Their College Match program will help match the student with potential colleges and athletic as well as academic programs. The result? Helping the athlete focus on schools that are a good fit and helping them discover ones
of which they may not even be aware. Mike and Nichol consult with the student throughout their high school years and provide a strategic focus that is all encompassing, including assistance in navigating financial aid, the NCAA rules, and access to the staff of highly competent professionals. According to Mike and Nichol, it is never too early to begin the search. “By starting earlier, the kids can develop relationships with the (college) coaches. It gets them in the coaches’ network,” said Mike who adds that most coaches typically make decisions on players when the player is a junior in high school. Once the student’s initial questionnaire is completed, the student’s profile is created, and it then becomes the responsibility of the athlete to respond to the coaches’ emails and to continually update their profiles. While there are many companies out
S HS FO O TB A L L 2 014 there that will help students, Mike said the reality is that they are not local and the student may hear from them once. “We are able to physically visit with each family and explain the entire process to them,” said Nichol. And while much of the responsibility is put on the student, Mike and Nichol are available to assist them and visit with them whenever necessary. “I will guide the child through the process and hold them accountable,” said Mike.

completing a college application, timelines and checklists, the FAFSA and much more.
“There are more deadlines, more requirements, more pressure, and it’s just more complex in general,” said Kari of the college application process. “Then add the cost of college to the mix and any parent and student can be so overwhelmed by it all. Our program makes it easier and more manageable for families allowing them to go through the process with

Ramp UP! for College has streamlined the overwhelming process of post-secondary decision making, a process that is often filled with hurdles and financial scares, and has helped many on the path to a new beginning. Ramp UP! for College offers programs for the college-bound student and the athlete. Ramp UP!’s goal is to help students find their “best fit” school academically and, if an athlete, athletically. Through the purchase of do-it-yourself workbooks, a post-secondary bound athlete can confidently navigate the world of self-recruitment. “We provide the tools to help the student differentiate him or herself from others and to help the student impress the coaches without spending thousands of dollars on paid promoting services,” said Kari. The workbook assists the athlete with marketing tools, recruiting timelines and checklists, communication tips and templates, and information on various athletic associations such as the NCAA, NAIA and NJCAA. In addition, it assists students with navigating the college search, application and admission process and includes information on financial aid, scholarships, grants, tips for

There is no doubt that the entire process is overwhelming for students and their parents. At a time when they are facing life changing decisions, the Ramp UP! for College tools, which are extremely affordable, can help make the process much less stressful. By letting others help guide you the process, you can be sure that you son or daughter can focus on and enjoy those treasured high school years! “I love to be with the kids, and I like to be able to travel with them to the games. It’s important.”
PRESTON LASLEY SHS ATHLETIC TRAINER HAPPY TO CALL SANDPOINT HOME. By Patty Hutchens.
STOP IN AT THE ATHLETIC TRAINER’S office at SHS on any given day, and young athletes are continuously stopping by for an ice pack, needing an ankle taped, or just wanting to visit. Trainer Preston Lasley thrives on it. “I really love working with these kids,” said Preston. “I take care of them like I would my own.” Born in Arizona, Preston’s family moved to Utah when he was about 5 years old, and he was homeschooled until the 9th grade. “I was raised around adults,” said Preston who went to Hurricane High School where he met Jaquete, his wife of seven years. It is Jaquete whom Preston credits with motivating him to attend Southern Utah University where he studied athletic training and coaching. But like many, Preston found it difficult to find a job in his field. After graduation, he worked with a high school team receiving a small stipend for his time and also worked nights at a grocery store. He had prepared himself for the possibility of a long and challenging job search, but in a whirlwind of events, he soon found himself packing up and moving to Sandpoint. In September of last year he began working as the athletic trainer at Sandpoint High School and as a clinician at PneuThera in Sandpoint. He balances his time between
both jobs and travels to as many of the high school games as possible. He is also pursuing his master’s degree in Sports Conditioning and Sports Performance. His days are often long. “During football season I work 75 to 80 hours some weeks,” he said. But he would not trade it for anything. “I love to be with the kids, and I like to be able to travel with them to the games. It’s important.” For Preston, being away from work also provides little down time. He and Jaquete have two children, four year old Landon and two year old Ariana. And it’s about to get busier with another child due in November. Grateful for all of life’s blessings, Preston said he would not be able to do any of what he does if it weren’t for the support of his wife. “I appreciate everything she does to encourage me,” he said. And the same can be said by many of the students about Preston. “I have a good rapport with the kids. I am always here for them to talk to, and I support them not only in athletics but emotionally too.”
