COACHES’ BIOGRAPHIES

By Patty Hutchens. Photos by Jason Duchow Photography. 10 years that Coach led the Sandpoint Bulldogs, he posted a 63-37 record. Puailoa returned to the helm as head coach of the Bulldogs in 2012.

S

atini Puailoa - Head Coach Satini Puailoa is no stranger to fans of Sandpoint High School football. Before arriving in Sandpoint in the mid-1990s, Coach Puailoa served as the Head Coach for both Montebello High School in California from 19811985 and Santa Barbara High School from 1986-1994. He began his coaching career in Sandpoint in 1994 where he coached until stepping down in 2004. He led the Sandpoint Bulldogs to a state championship during the 1997 season, and they finished in the runner-up position in 2003. During the

In 2005 Coach Puailoa appeared on the television show “ESPN Bound for Glory.” Coach Puailoa currently serves as the department chair for the physical education department at Sandpoint High School and is a physical education instructor. Coach Puailoa says the driving force behind his desire to coach is simply to help young men develop into better men. He enjoys witnessing firsthand this group of young men grow and develop. He said he especially enjoys seeing them participate in the journey of chasing perfection and achieving excellence. Words of wisdom to his team: “Become a servant to your teammates, school, and community. The more you help others, the more you will benefit.” Chris Lassen - Coach Lassen served as the head coach for Sandpoint Bulldog varsity football from 1978-1982. Prior to that he served as the head coach for the JV football team from 1975-1977. He returned to Sandpoint football in 2011 as the Junior Tackle assistant coach. He returned to

the varsity squad in 2012 as assistant head coach, defensive coordinator and linebacker coach. Prior to retiring in 2006, Lassen taught school for 38 years - 30 of which were at Sandpoint High School. He served as coach for football and track and as an administrator. His experience away from Sandpoint High School includes four years in an athletic director position and as a wrestling coach. Lassen currently spends his time farming on his ranch, homesteaded by his great grandfather. He also owns a small logging operation. Coach Lassen is happy to be coaching

with Satini Puailoa as he says they share the same philosophy in coaching the young athletes in the community. “It is an opportunity for me to give back to the community,” said Coach Lassen. “And I want to pay it forward the same way I was

helped in life-changing ways by football and my coaches.” His goal is also to instill discipline and trust so the young men can be successful on and off the field. Words of wisdom to his team: “Being part of a brotherhood completes the development of becoming a man; and football will be a conduit for this to happen.” Crosby Tajan - A 1993 graduate of Sandpoint High School, Coach Tajan went on to play offensive tackle for the University of Idaho from 1993-1997. After graduating,

Coach Tajan returned to Sandpoint High School where he has been a physical education instructor for the last 17 years. During that time, Coach Tajan has coached a variety of sports. He served as Sandpoint High School varsity offensive line coach from 19982005, was the offensive line coach for the 8th grade Sandpoint Junior Tackle in 2011 and has also coached middle school and freshman basketball as well as varsity track. Coach Tajan said his desire to be involved with the SHS football program stems from many areas, but is largely due to the fact that Coach Puailoa’s program and philosophy is one with which he strongly agrees. “It is always an honor to be part of his staff.” Coach Tajan enjoys working with these youth and says they are kids who are hungry for success and are willing to put forth the work it takes to achieve it. Coach Tajan is married to his wife Morgan, who is also an alumna of Sandpoint High School. They have two daughters: Tacey and Willow. “It’s exciting to teach and coach players who are so willing to learn and absorb practical information and techniques that will actually allow them success,” said Coach Tajan.

Words of wisdom to his team: “Finish! Always give it your very best and commit to giving your best work to the very end no matter the score, the situation or the event. Always finish strong and leave your mark as one consisting of great effort, attention

to detail and execution.” Sean Lyon – As a former SHS Bulldog, Coach Lyon is happy to be back coaching at his alma mater. After leaving SHS, Lyon went on to play football for the Air Force Academy. In addition to coaching football, Coach Lyon is a science teacher at Sandpoint Middle School. Coach Lyon’s role with the SHS Bulldogs is coaching for the defensive line, something he is thoroughly enjoying. “I like being able to interact with and teach the players,”

shared Coach Lyon. When asked what he sees about the biggest challenge of coaching, he responded, “Being able to find out how to motivate each player to find his full potential.” He looks forward to this season and said his goal is for his players to be the best defensive line in the region. Words of Wisdom to his team – “Play every play like it’s your last.”

Lassen. In addition to football, Ray Miller also served as the Sandpoint Bulldog’s head wrestling coach for 15 years.

His role with the Bulldogs is assisting with the quarterbacks and relaying information from the booth to the team during games.

In the mid-1980s Miller took a break from coaching in order to spend more time with his two daughters.

He is excited to be back at his alma mater. “It’s a strong program, and I wanted to experience ‘coming home’ to coach,” said Coach Martin.

In 1990 Ray Miller returned to coach 8th grade football and later moved up to coach varsity with Coach Puailoa. Ray Miller retired from both teaching and coaching in 2003 and served as Mayor of Sandpoint from 2002 to 2008. A bulldog through and through, Coach Ray Miller spent 30 years teaching Economics and A.P. Government at Sandpoint High School.

When asked what his biggest challenge has been over the years, he shares that it is the evolution of the role that has been made it more difficult. “Coaching has

“After November some of these seniors will never snap up a chin strap again,” said Miller. “The memories they create here will stay with them their whole life and I want those memories to be great.” Words of wisdom to his team: “Pros are people who do jobs well—even when they don’t feel like it.” Ray Miller – Coach Miller began coaching freshman football in the early 1970s. In the late 70s he and Coach Lassen teamed up to coach the Sandpoint Bulldog junior varsity team. Miller later became the offensive coordinator under then head varsity coach

Allen Martin - A 1981 graduate of Sandpoint High School, Coach Martin has 20 years of experience as a head coach and seven as an assistant. His experience includes coaching at Whitworth University, Mead High School and Riverside High School.

changed so much. The game and all the logistical, medical and attention to details has created so much more work for the coaching staff. It’s incredible how much there really is to do. Unless you have been a head coach, there is no way to describe

it! It is relentless,” said Coach Martin. As he looks ahead to his goals for this year, Coach Martin said he wants to help the boys be good leaders in all facets of the game.

“I enjoy everything about coaching at SHS - the players, fellow coaches and staff, the town and community,” said Coach Beard. “We get to teach the game we love to young student athletes, in such a beautiful place with great community support.”

“The QB position is very complex and gets a lot of attention. Sometimes good and sometimes bad, but that is the nature of the game. How you handle it says much about you as a person,” said Coach Martin. “I want them to have fun and have a great experience, especially if you are a senior and this is your last chance to play at this level.”

Like anything worth pursuing, there are challenges. “I think the biggest challenge coaching football is getting players to buy into the systems being taught for the first time, development of player fundamentals and position responsibilities, and taking the "I" out of team,” said Coach Beard. “Playing the game as one cohesive unit verses eleven individuals on the field.”

Words of Wisdom to his team: “Let the game come to you! Sometimes we try so hard that we get in our own way. If you are prepared properly, mentally and physically,

His goal for the team is to improve each day, to ensure they always put forth their best effort and to be the best teammate they can be. “If we do these things, we will

become champions on the field and in life.”

Al Beard - If you have followed Sandpoint football for a long time, Coach Al Beard is no stranger to you. Although it is his second year coaching with this group, he was the coach for wide receivers and kickers at Sandpoint High School from 1994 to 1998. And you know what that means? He was part of the coaching staff when the Bulldogs won the State Championship in 1997! Football has always been a part of Coach Beard’s life. Starting at age 8 he played Pop Warner football and continued through high school. His positions included defensive end / outside linebacker and offensive fullback / running back. Coach Beard began coaching in the late 1970s and served as head coach for youth football for 15 years in California. He also served as a high school varsity assistant for three years in California before coming to Sandpoint in the 1990s. And now that he has returned he could not be happier.

8

SHS FOOTBALL 2015

Words of wisdom to his team: “Have fun and stay involved in your high school years. They go by so fast and you can't get them back. Give your best effort!” Vince Huntsberger - This is the second year on the SHS Bulldog coaching staff for Vince Huntsberger who brings with him a great deal of experience. A graduate of Libby High School, Coach Huntsberger had a remarkable college career as safety for the University of Montana and went on to play one year of arena football. His coaching experience includes one year at the University of Montana and one year at Central Missouri State. With one season behind him, Coach Huntsberger is thoroughly enjoying the experience. “I love to be able to teach the kids and to coach them,” said Huntsberger. As an emergency room physician at Bonner General Health and the father of a three-year-old and one-year-old, Coach Huntsberger’s, or “Doc” as the players refer to him, days are extremely busy. But so are

his nights. He works in the emergency room from 8pm to 8am to be sure he is available to work with the team and does his best to never miss a practice. “My goal for the season is to help the boys improve play by play and to help make them not only better football players, but better people,” said Coach Huntsberger. Words of wisdom to his team: “Play hard and have fun.” Larry Jeffres - Joining the coaching staff this year is Larry Jeffres, a 1971 graduate of Sandpoint High School and former bulldog football player. Coach Jeffres serves as the running back coach and has coached football in Sandpoint on and off for the last 25 years including flag, junior

tackle, middle school and high school levels. Coach Jeffres said he enjoys watching the young men improve in their sill levels, mature, receive lessons of team play and life lessons the sport of football teaches. “I also enjoy the camaraderie amongst the coaching staff,” said Coach Jeffres. Going into the season, Coach Jeffres said he sees the biggest challenge as that of time management for both the kids and the coaches. “There are always kids who you have to get to buy into the program and the established team plans,” said Jeffres. He said his main goal is to win a state championship and he also wants all of the players to believe they are the very best at what the do in their respective positions. Words of wisdom to his team: “Give every day, every week and every month of your high school athletic career your very best. No regrets! The memories made and lessons learned will be with you for the rest of your life.”

Auxiliary Staff

and work hard to achieve their goals.

Ryan Egan – Coach Egan played varsity football under Coach Puailoa from 1997 to 2000 and is thrilled to be working with his one time mentor. Coach Egan is using his expertise as the owner and operator of an athletic training facility in Lake Tahoe to work on strength and conditioning, injury prevention and movement reconditioning with this year’s team. He also hopes to open a similar facility to the one in Lake Tahoe here in his hometown. He said he enjoys the camaraderie that being a coach offers him.

When asked what words of wisdom he has for the young athletes, Coach Egan responded, “thankfulness, faith, humility, sacrifice, love and honor.”

Coach Egan shares that one of his goals this year for the athletes is improved physical, mental and spiritual awareness. He wants to instill in them a desire for discipline and encourage them to dream

In addition to his role at SHS, Preston also works as a clinician at PneuThera in Sandpoint.

Preston Lasley - Stop in at the athletic trainer’s office at SHS on any given day, and young athletes are continuously stopping by for an ice pack, needing an ankle taped, or just wanting to visit. Trainer Preston Lasley thrives on it. “I really love working with these kids,” said Preston.  “I take care of them like I would my own.”

Now in his third year as athletic trainer,

Preston puts in long hours – sometimes 75 to 80 hours each week during football season.  “I love to be with the kids, and I like to be able to travel with them to the games. It’s important,” he said. Jarrett Robson “Jer Bear” - Jarrett is a 1997 graduate of Sandpoint High School and has served as the equipment manager for the last 17 years. A big part of his job is to ensure that all the players have the equipment they need for games and practices. He enjoys working with the current coaching staff and interacting with the athletes. Words of wisdom to his team: “Remember that how you prepare yourself here at Sandpoint High School determines how you carry yourself out there in the real world.”

A WORD ON COACHING

FOOTBALL - A SPORT FOR ALL SEASONS

Football is like life - it requires perseverance, self-denial, hard work, sacrifice, dedication and respect for authority. - Vince Lombardi

A

s Sandpoint High School varsity football head coach Satini Puailoa enters into his fourth season since returning to the helm of the bulldogs, this year looks to be better than ever. “We caught up to a lot of teams last year,” said Puailoa. “And this year we should

pass a lot of them. Whether it will be all (the teams) remains to be seen.” Assistant Coach Chris Lassen agrees. “It will all come down to Friday nights,” said Lassen. There are approximately 30 lettermen returning to this year’s squad, including over 30 seniors. And of the fourteen

returning starters, there are two who were all state their junior year – Kyle Perry and Carlos Callado – and five players who were all-league. “We had Paul Sundquist, Davan Norris, Carlos Collado, Wyatt McCormick and Kyle Perry,” said Puailoa of those who were all-league. While last year’s team showed a significant improvement over the previous year,

Puailoa said the dedication this team has shown over the off-season has him confident that they will be giving it their all on the field this fall. “We are loaded with 5A competition,” said Puailoa, who adds that there are many players being looked at by college scouts. Among the teams they will face are Post Falls, University High School, Lewiston, Mount Spokane, East Valley and Lake City High School. In addition, their league games will be against Moscow and Lakeland. It’s a schedule that speaks to the strength of the Sandpoint football program. “You can tell the health of the team when you see the schedule,” said Puailoa, who adds that to get ready for conference games it is good to play the bigger 5A schools. Lassen explains that every two years there is a contract the schools sign regarding the teams they agree to play. As some of the 4A schools have removed themselves from Sandpoint’s schedule, 5A teams have replaced them. When discussing this season, Pualioa said key players include Davan Norris at quarterback with Paul Sundquist, who will be starting middle linebacker, serving as the backup quarterback. “We also have Kyle (Perry), Jake (Timothy) and Wyatt (McCormick); three guys who scored a lot of points for us last year,” said Puailoa, who adds that Perry alone scored 29 touchdowns last season. Senior Tyler Presser also saw a lot of action last year and fans should expect to see him run the ball quite a bit. Others on the frontline include Marcus Rodriguez and Alex Feyen. Other seniors Coach Puailoa said he

expects to make a significant impact offensively include Logan Magro, Kaleb Merrill and Mike Plaster. On the defense side, Puailoa expects seniors Carlos Collado, Sam Johnson and Paul Sundquist to have a strong influence on the defensive play. Other players defensively who expect to see a lot of time again this year are Colton Engle and Caiden Oliver. Coach Puailoa expects to see action also from Devin La Croix and Brett Hutchens who also will be lining up for the defense this fall. “Brett solidified himself in that group,” said Puailoa about the time that Hutchens has spent in the weight room during the off-season. Other seniors and juniors on the team that Puailoa said will see some playing time are Travis Davis, Rob Wentz, Justin Hobson, Clayton Fournier, Walker Jacobson, Levi Irish, Zach Alamillo, and Brock Browning. With so many returning lettermen and a solid second string, Puailoa is optimistic about the season. “We’ve been playing catch up since we started (four years ago),” said Puailoa. “Last year, with the exception of Lake City, we closed the gap.” Lassen agrees. “While we caught a lot of people this year, we’re hoping to pass them this year. But we have to show up and play on Friday night,” said Lassen.

With so many returning lettermen and a solid second string, Puailoa is optimistic about the season.

So just what is it that has made this team increase its success over the last few years? It is the dedication of the kids and coaches that has grown not just during the season, but during the off-season as well. “The first year, we would have four kids a day in the weight room during the summer,” said Puailoa. “Last year it grew to about 50, and this summer we’ve had over 60 kids. Now, they all live here.” But it took more than encouraging the kids

to train, it took providing an atmosphere of camaraderie and instilling a solid work ethic. “We have leaders and mentors who have created an atmosphere where the players can reach peak performance,” said Puailoa. “We’ve created a positive bond among everyone involved.” Lassen says the program is a creative one and is a two way street. “To have a program like this, the kids have to spend the time with the coaches, and the coaches have to make the time as well,” he said. “It’s amazing the number of adults who are here (in the weight room) every day interacting with the kids.” While many of the students spend a lot of time together in the off-season, once school begins there are about 150 football players who send a minimum of four hours each day together in their physical education class and practice. “Add to that the time they spend on the bus, eating their team meals and game time,” said Puailoa of the 30 plus seniors, 25 to 30 juniors, over 40 sophomores and approximately

50 freshmen who will be suiting up for the bulldogs’ football program this fall. Coach Lassen and Coach Puailoa credit the Sandpoint High School administration with being instrumental in providing a schedule that allows the players time to bond and grow. “The administration has been wonderful about creating opportunities for the kids to be together,” said a grateful Coach Lassen. The result of team bonding and support from a highly dedicated coaching staff is a group of athletes that are always pulling for one another and have unique insight into one another’s strengths and weaknesses. “That does not just happen,” said Lassen. “We have a unique situation, and it has taken time to build the program.”

We have leaders and mentors who have created an atmosphere where the players can reach peak performance.

As for the upcoming season, Lassen summed it up well. “When you have the blood, sweat and tears into the program, the kids are not going to let anyone take that away from them. Once we get to the top of that mountain, we’ll look for another mountain.”

T

hey are at the games cheering and doing stunts - all in an effort to support the Sandpoint teams on their way to a Bulldog victory! But there is a lot of work that is done prior to game time. Unlike other sports, which are mostly seasonal, the cheer squad practices throughout the year — and that includes the summer months. And if last year is any indication, this year’s squad will do great things. Last spring the team competed at state in Boise. The all-girl stunt team took fourth place, and the coed routine also came in fourth.

“This was a great accomplishment for SHS and the cheerleaders as there hasn’t been a co-ed group that has

competed at state before,” said Lori Gedrose, the coach for the SHS cheerleaders. One important quality the team possesses is an ability to trust one another. With stunts and flips, there are a lot of things that could go wrong. But because of the level of trust they have in each other, they are able to perform and succeed. “Without everyone working together as a group, we couldn’t have such hard, impressive skills that everyone loves to watch,” said Gedrose.

FEATURE STORY

Live from Bulldog Nation! Long time bulldog radio announcers share great memories. By Patty Hutchens.

W

hether you are a parent who cannot make it to a game or a Sandpoint Bulldog fan in general, you have come to rely upon them to bring you the play-by-play of the Bulldogs. Chris Chatburn and Bob Witte – they are the dedicated long time radio announcers for the Sandpoint Bulldogs.

Kelly. That game, with Brad Lang, Tony Hook and Doug Gunter just to name a few, was a classic according to Witte. “And beating Lewiston back in ’97 for the first time in 50 years was great,” he said. “And of course the State Championship…what a great game, I’ve watched the film of that one a hundred times!”

“One of us (Bob or Chris) have been calling the games since the 1989 season,” said Chatburn about the duo’s longevity.

As for Chatburn, he said one of the highlights was the year the Bulldogs beat Lake City on the Tony Hook run. “That was pretty exciting,” said Chatburn. “Also the years when we went to the Milk Bowl are always memorable.”

Bob joined Chris in 1991 and recalls his first game vividly. “My first game was in Bonners Ferry as a sideline reporter. It had been a 70-degree day in Sandpoint, but by halftime at Bonners it started snowing! No one was prepared for that,” recalled Witte.

While we sit at home in our living rooms, glued to the radio for the play-by-play of our beloved Bulldogs, we picture the announcers sitting comfortably in their broadcast booth. But that is not always the case.

The two have seen many great games over the years and have enjoyed reliving those suspenseful moments. For Witte, one of the most exciting games was what he calls “The Drive” against Bishop

When I mentioned to the pair that I was surprised when I attended the Lewiston game last year and saw they were broadcasting from the stands, they said that is not out of the norm.

“Lewiston never lets us broadcast from the announcers’ booth, but that’s a story for another day,” said Witte who recalls a game in the earlier years when they were broadcasting from Laurel, MT and there was no announcers’ booth, forcing them to broadcast from the stands in 110 degree weather with no shade. “At one point I thought we were still in commercial break when I said ‘Geez, I’m sweating like a pig!’ It turns out it went out over the air!” said Witte. Chatburn recalls a game before cell phones (yes, they’ve been broadcasting that long!) when they were calling a game in Columbia Falls, Montana when a sheriff’s deputy came into the booth to inform them they had been disconnected. And then there is inclement weather that can throw a curve ball at them from time to time. “In Post Falls one year we were broadcasting from the stands and had to use a tarp over the equipment because it was so cold we thought the equipment might freeze,” shared Chatburn.

There were times too when the pair had to become quite innovative to overcome obstacles that can occur with live broadcasts. “One year at Coeur d’Alene the electricity in our booth went out so Chris and I got in his car and pulled onto the field behind one of the end zones. We called the rest of the game from our cell phones,” laughed Witte. As Witte reminisces, more great memories come to mind. “One of the funniest games ever was in Libby back before the Satini days. We were losing to the Libby Loggers and they were enjoying it way too much. After every touchdown their male cheerleaders would start up chainsaws to celebrate. Their concession stand was serving special ‘Libby Lattes’ which I think was just a cup of coffee with some milk in it and shaken up a bit,” said Witte. “By the end of the game I was referring to them as the ‘Lucky Lagers,’ as in the beer brand.” The fact is, though, that the conditions they broadcast from just make the journey more adventurous. “We’ve endured wind storms, dust storms, driving rain, and minus

32

SHS FOOTBALL 2015

10 degree temperatures where our jeans actually froze to the grand stand seats,” said Witte. “It’s all been a great experience, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything!”

are both such big Bulldog football fans. We’ve worked a heck of a lot of games together and spent countless numbers of hours in the car together, so we’d better have good chemistry!” said Witte.

While many of the seasons have been great, it is always more fun when the team is winning — and that is something that both Witte and Chatburn agree is something they can look forward to this upcoming season.

Chatburn said that keeping it light is what makes it entertaining for both them and the listeners. “Bob is easy to work with, and we try to keep it fun on the air,” said Chatburn who estimates they have called at least 150 games together. “ We have a pretty good sense of what we’re doing.”

“I feel this team with good health can make a very deep run in the playoffs!” predicted Chatburn. Witte agrees. “There are a lot of seniors, there is a lot of skill and a lot of depth…what a great combination,” said Witte. “Everybody’s super excited for this season! With such a history broadcasting games together, Chatburn and Witte make a great broadcasting team — one that we all enjoy letting come into our homes and making us feel a part of the Bulldogs. “Our chemistry has been good since day one. I guess because we

With over 26 years of broadcasting the Bulldogs, neither Witte nor Chatburn plan on leaving anytime soon. “It’s just really fun for us and a labor of love. Very few high schools broadcast local sporting events anymore so we are really fortunate here in Sandpoint that we have the resources and the community support that we need to be able to do this,” said Witte. “I’ve loved every second of it and will continue to well into the future!” And as for Chatburn, well there’s no place like home. “Friday night at Barlow stadium… the best place ever to call a game,” he said.

FEATURE STORY

That Familiar Feeling The NFL season is upon us. By Chris Strickley.

A

s we near the end of another wonderful summer in the Pacific Northwest, it’s about that time of year when many of us begin to feel dejected. The locals know all too well that the warm weather season around here is often brief. The reality of the impending winter isn’t necessarily something that creates excitement. Thankfully, this inevitable reality can be offset by one that offers a little more fun and intrigue through the winter months. The reality is that we are but a short breath away from the first game of the 2015 NFL season between the Pittsburgh Steelers and New England Patriots on September 10. The return of football seems to be a breath of fresh air to many. Every new season seems to reinforce the fact that football has supplanted all other major professional sports in the U.S. as the favorite among the populace. It provides everyone an excuse to get together and divert away from their

daily obligations and responsibilities. It’s no secret that many around the Pacific Northwest are eager for their Seahawks to take the field again. All the 12’s are anxious to know if a third straight Super Bowl will happen, if they will rebound from the heartbreaking Super Bowl loss, plus much more. We’ll look more into the state of the Seahawks. For now, let’s look at what else to watch for. What to Watch For Outside of Seattle It’s hard to perfectly summarize within the confines of these pages everything to keep an eye on this season. This past off-season saw more drama and headlines than any in recent history. Just as an appetizer and for the sake of brevity, let’s highlight three key off-season developments that will garner plenty of attention once the season kicks off.

heer on O Proud to C

Just to summarize, the 49ers lost Head Coach Jim Harbaugh, ILB Chris Borland, OT Anthony Davis, DE Justin Smith, ILB Patrick Willis, RB Frank Gore, WR Stevie Johnson, CB Perrish Cox, CB Chris Culliver, WR Michael Crabtree, OG Mike Iupati, OLB Dan Skuta, and OLB Aldon Smith. This is a staggering amount of production that will need to be replaced immediately. Not even three years ago, the 49ers were only one touchdown away from a Super Bowl victory against the Baltimore Ravens. Since that day, the 49ers began a gradual fall from prominence. They lost to the Seahawks in the 2013 NFC Championship game and missed out on the playoffs entirely in 2014. Even with the massive roster overhaul, 49ers fans should make every attempt to remain optimistic. QB Colin Kaepernick may have issues with consistency, but he is still the same man who led the 49ers to a near Super Bowl victory a short while ago. He will have talented wide receivers Torrey Smith and Anquan Boldin returning. The youngsters of the team will also be given an opportunity to step up. The major questions will exist with the offensive line, running back, and defense (especially the linebacker corps). The good news is it’s unlikely that the 49ers will fall all the way to the bottom. However, patience among the fans and team will need to be exercised as a new identity is formed. 2. A Deflated Issue in New England Look, we’re all tired of hearing about it. However, it is a major issue that has plagued the NFL from the very beginning. Just for reiteration, the saga of the socalled “Deflategate” scandal arose after the AFC Championship game earlier this

year between the New England Patriots and Indianapolis Colts. The Patriots allegedly under-inflated their game balls under the instruction of QB Tom Brady. The Patriots wound up routing the Colts 45-7. The Patriots were given a $1 million fine, loss of first and fourth round draft picks in 2016 and 2017 respectively, and Brady has been suspended the first four games of 2015. Brady appealed his suspension to Commissioner Roger Goodell, but it was denied. According to multiple sources, Brady and the National Football League Players Association are taking the case before a federal judge in hopes that they can reduce or eliminate Brady’s suspension. Assuming the status quo remains the same, the Patriots will be without Brady against Pittsburgh and Jacksonville at home and Buffalo and Dallas on the road. Head Coach Bill Belichick’s system is genius enough to allow nearly any NFL quarterback to step in and be successful (see Matt Cassel 2008). It wouldn’t be surprising to see them go 2-2 or even 3-1 without Brady. What will be interesting to see is how the team handles the distractions. Being the returning Super Bowl champions as well as the focal point of the Deflategate issue, this team will be bombarded by a media microscope all season. Considering the Patriots were able to win the Super Bowl while the scandal was barely two weeks old, they will likely be just fine. 3. #1 vs. #2 It’s been awhile since the Tennessee Titans and Tampa Bay Buccaneers have been given positive attention in the media. The teams were a combined 4-28 last season and received the top two picks in the NFL draft the following May. Tampa Bay wound up selecting quarterback Jameis Winston (Florida State) with the number one overall pick, while Tennessee selected quarterback Marcus Mariota (University of Oregon) at

number two overall. As fate would have it, these two quarterbacks match up against each other in week one of the regular season in Tampa Bay.

he fully believes his call was the right one. While some people said “(it was the) worst possible decision,” Carroll said “(it was the) worst possible outcome.”

This may be a single game, but considering the rarity of the occurrence and the promise that both these quarterbacks possess, it is very intriguing. If both quarterbacks pan out, this game could be remembered as a classic.

We have all turned into couch head coaches and given our two cents as to what should have happened ad nauseam. There comes a time where everyone has to move on, and that is where we find ourselves currently. Looking ahead, what will be paramount as the Seahawks begin their quest for a third straight Super Bowl trip?

What You’ve Been Waiting For The Seahawks and their fans have been waiting for this moment for what seems like an eternity: turning the page on last season and starting anew. It would be no surprise to discover many hearts that are still lamenting how last season ended. They were three feet away from a repeat Super Bowl victory, only to have the rug violently ripped out from beneath their feet. This is of course in reference to the now infamous play call of a short slant pass on second and goal from the Patriot’s oneyard line that resulted in an interception by CB Malcolm Butler, which sealed the Super Bowl victory for the Patriots. A flurry of disappointment, confusion and anger ran rampant across the world of the Seattle Seahawks. Ever since that day, Head Coach Pete Carroll has assumed full responsibility of the play call. However,

1. Offense QB Russell Wilson is now signed longterm (four years at $87.6 million), and RB Marshawn Lynch is back on a contract extension that will keep him in Seattle through the 2017 season. Add in a blockbuster trade for TE Jimmy Graham from the New Orleans Saints, and all of a sudden the Seahawk’s offense is one of the biggest threats in the NFL. Lynch is the oil that keeps the offensive machine running smoothly by opening up the passing game for Wilson. With the addition of Graham, the Seahawks will have arguably the best red zone offense in the NFL. Any defense having to account for both Lynch and Graham in a short yardage situation is something that

should only happen in a nightmare. Because game plans from the opposition will revolve heavily around these three, this will open a wide door for other role players like wide receivers Doug Baldwin, Jermaine Kearse and Super Bowl breakout star Chris Matthews. The offensive line will need resolve as C Max Unger was shipped to New Orleans in the Graham trade and LG James Carpenter left for the Jets in free agency. However, the pros outweigh the cons and this offense will do well. 2. Defense Defensive Coordinator Dan Quinn is now the head coach for the Atlanta Falcons. Last year’s Defensive Backs Coach Kris Richard will assume his position. Richard is lucky enough to inherit a defense that will be vying for a third consecutive year as the best in the league. Richard Sherman, Kam Chancellor, Earl Thomas and Cary Williams (the secondary known as “The Legion of Boom”) are all back. A linebacker group consisting of Bobby Wagner, Bruce Irvin and K.J. Wright are back as well. Then the defensive line will carry Cliff Avril, Michael Bennett and Brandon Mebane. The return of these core players will allow Richard to keep last

year’s scheme largely intact. With Pro Bowl caliber talents ranging across every facet of the defense, it’s hard for anyone to deny the potential of being the best in the league for a third straight year. 3. The Schedule The Seahawks face the fourth toughest schedule in 2015. They have nine games against teams that made the playoffs in 2014. Five of their road games will be against ten-game winners from a year ago. The NFC West should be stronger as the Arizona Cardinals will have QB Carson Palmer returning and the St. Louis Rams were busy improving their roster in the offseason. Knowing that many will attempt to thrust the Seahawks off of their throne of recent success, they will need to display a healthy reverence to every opponent throughout the season. Making Sense of Everything The 12’s have every reason to be optimistic heading into 2015. The same success the Seahawks exhibited on the field the last few years should continue. Despite a schedule that seeks to hinder, this team has the chemistry and skill to overcome. Since the salary cap era began in 1994, no

Being the returning Super Bowl champions as well as the focal point of the Deflategate issue, this team will be bombarded by a media microscope all season.

team has ever made three straight Super Bowl appearances. Although they are on the wrong side of history, an improved offense and a formidable defense afford them an opportunity to say otherwise. Even playing the role of a skeptic, one would be hard pressed to find any glaring holes on this team. If forced to find something, what would be the biggest roadblock for the Seahawks in 2015? After all, the talent is there, the coaching is there, the support from the fans is there.

Seven months ago the Seahawks were three feet away from winning their second straight Super Bowl. In the moments immediately following that heartbreaking interception, it was evident that the Seahawks had only beaten themselves. Considering this occurred on the grandest of all sports stages, it’s hard to see them making that same mistake twice. So as a season of redemption begins in 2015, the only thing standing in the way of the Seahawks, is the Seahawks.

er passion for dance is contagious. And it is that passion she hopes to pass onto her dance squad. Heather Bunty, who has owned Heather’s Dance Studio in Cocolalla for the past 10 years, is thrilled to be taking over as the head dance coach for Sandpoint High School. “I just love getting to know all the girls,” said Heather, whose daughter Madison is on the dance team. “I am very excited and I feel very blessed.” Led by captains Logan Hastings and Mary Kovalchuk, the dance team practiced all summer long, and now that school is in session, their days begin at 6:30am. “We practice Monday through Friday from 6:30 to 7:30 each morning,” said Heather.

“And we also practice after school one to two days each week.” But the girls do far more than dance. “Every opportunity I can get the girls out into the community, I take it,” said Heather, who was a girl scout leader for 9 years and involved in cub scouts for 12 years. “I love community service.” Over the summer the girls were in the Fourth of July Parade and also were at Jacey’s Race. As she begins her first year as coach, Heather said she wants to teach the girls to learn to “dance it out.” “I’ve told the girls that if they are ever going through a hard time in their lives, dance it out. Dancing always makes you feel better,” she said.

SENIOR PROFILES

2015

SENIOR BULLDOGS By Patty Hutchens. Photos by Jason Duchow Photography.

Wesley Bickers – This is senior Wesley Bickers’ first season playing football. For years he had played baseball, but he credits Coach Crosby Tajan with inspiring him to give football a try – and he is glad he did. “I enjoy the teamwork, the camaraderie and the bros!” said Wesley, who will play the position of defensive end. When asked about his future plans, Wesley shared that he looks forward to attending the University of Idaho and being involved in sports there as well. He said that so far the best part about his football experience was the camp this summer, and he looks forward to the team giving it all they have got to go all the way to the state title. As for his advice to his younger teammates, Wesley said, “Believe in yourself and work hard.”

Adriano Cardona - What senior Adriano Cardona enjoys most about being part of the Bulldog’s team is working towards goals. He plays defensive tackle. When asked what he is looking forward to most this season, he said, “Going to state and winning!” Adriano enjoys the competition and the work it takes to get there. His fondest memory of football was the hitting drills his team did during his sophomore year. Looking ahead, Adriano plans to pursue a career as a state patrol officer. Adriano said he appreciates Coach Lassen and how he has helped keep him motivated and moving forward in life. One piece of advice he would like to offer the younger players is to put their best foot forward and work hard to achieve their goals.

Carlos Collado – Carlos has played football for 10 years, and he does not intend to stop when he goes to college. He is a versatile player and plays both offensive tackle and defensive end. Carlos said he is looking forward to a possible rematch against Blackfoot this year. Like many of his teammates, his best memory so far is the win against Mt. Spokane last season where the Bulldogs held them at a goal line stand to win the game. Carlos shares that Coach Puailoa has had a great influence on him. “He taught us that if there is a will, there is a way,” said Carlos. As he looks back on his last few years, Carlos encourages the younger players to take in every moment. “Make the most out of your high school experience, because it goes by so fast.”

Go Bulldogs! Wyatt Cox – Football has been a way of life for Wyatt Cox, playing since elementary school. As wide receiver he has seen a lot of action on varsity, and said he enjoys seeing how his team can come together to do great things. The game against Post Falls his freshman year stands out most in his mind. Wyatt shares that he does not plan to participate in sports after high school, and instead plans to focus on his career goal of becoming a firefighter. He looks forward to the journey his team will take this fall and credits each and every coach with supporting him and influencing him in many different ways. When asked what his advice is to younger players, Wyatt said, “Believe in yourself and your team.”

Travis Davis – Senior Travis Davis has played football for nine years on both the offensive and defensive line and said he what he enjoys most about the game of football is the opportunity it offers him to be with his close friends. As he looks back on his years in the sport, he said it is the time spent with his teammates at Breakaway camp that he enjoyed the most. Travis is looking forward to a winning season, and next year he plans to attend the University of Idaho. When asked what coach has influenced him the most, Travis said it has been Coach Puailoa for the way he has inspired him. Travis said if there is one piece of advice he can give the younger players, it is this, “Hard work and dedication will give you the opportunity to be a good player.”

Jackson Diercks – As Jackson enters his third year in football, he is most looking forward to sharing his senior year with all of his friends and, of course, hopefully winning the state title. Over the past two years, Jackson has played whip, but this year we will see him at outside linebacker. He said that he enjoys the camaraderie and competitiveness that football offers. Looking ahead, he plans to attend a fouryear university and continue to play football or rugby in a rec league or intramurals. His favorite football memory? “Breaking the ‘floatie toy’ at Breakaway camp,” said Jackson. He is grateful to Coach Scott Fitchett for always inspiring him to be the best that he can be. His advice to the younger players is that in order to succeed, one has to be dedicated and work hard.

Nate Dillon – In his second year on varsity Nate said what he enjoys most about the sport is the opportunity it provides to be physical. He plays both offensive guard and defensive tackle and said he is most looking forward to the competition this season will bring. Nate said his best memory on the football field came when his team won the conference at his former school. Nate plans to attend college where he will major in either physics or engineering and shared that he may also throw shot put at the college level. He said he owes a lot to Coach Puailoa who helped him with knee problems and helped him grow in the weight room. He said he advises younger classmates to “work hard, hit the weights, and don’t give up.”

DAVID LYON

HIS LEGACY LIVES ON Captain David Lyon Remembered.

I

t was a devastating loss for many in our community. Sandpoint native David Lyon was killed in action while serving our country. A former Sandpoint High School Bulldog, David Lyon was a star athlete at Sandpoint High School. He participated in football and track, setting school records along the way. His life touched many, and his death on December 27, 2013 in Kabul, Afghanistan, left many with broken hearts. Last year in an emotional halftime ceremony, Capt. David Lyon’s number was retired. From the youngest players in the football program through the high school level, number 64 will never be worn by another Sandpoint football player. The

ceremony meant a lot to not only his family, which includes brother Sean who is a current varsity coach, but also the players who were on hand to present the jerseys to Capt. Lyon’s family. A senior this year, Carlos Collado wore number 64 until the the moment it was retired – changing jerseys mid-game. And while many of the Sandpoint High School athletes never knew Capt. Lyon, they know of the legacy he has left. One part of that legacy is the Capt. David Lyon Peak Performance Program, a program designed to maximize an athlete’s’ potential no matter what sport he or she takes part in. According to Coach Satini Puailoa, there are three ways

“The criteria to qualify for the scholarship is that the player must emulate David’s ideals,” said Coach Puailoa. “They have to be a multisport athlete, academically in good standing, must be a participant in the weight room, and give back to the community.” Coach added that the second way for football players to pay the $200 fee associated with the program is through the car raffle the team conducts each year. “Kids can sell tickets and they can put some of those proceeds to the program,” said Coach. And the third is to pay the $200. The Capt. David Lyon Peak Performance Program consists of a functional assessment by professionals of the athlete’s areas of imbalance and weaknesses. The assessment looks at the athlete’s posture, core and gait. Then, through six sessions spread out over three weeks, the athlete meets with a professional to work on those imbalances and weaknesses. The result? A stronger athlete who increases his or her ability to excel

and is less susceptible to injury. The program is available to all Sandpoint High School athletes. At times, there may be other issues that are uncovered in the assessment, such as physical imbalances that are best addressed by a physical therapist. In these instances, the parents are notified and given the option to apply the $200 fee towards a physical therapy application. The students who have qualified thus far for the scholarships are Madison Schoening, with a 3.9 GPA who participates in soccer, basketball and track; Taylor Ward, with a 4.03 GPA who participates in soccer, basketball and track; Paige DuMars with a 3.7 GPA who participates in soccer, basketball and track; Rainey Woodward with a 4.065 GPA who participates in cross-country and track; Kyle Perry with a 3.7 GPA who participates in football, basketball, track and baseball; Paul Sundquist with a 4.042 GPA who participates in football, basketball and baseball; Bear Youngdahl with a 3.7 GPA who participates in football and baseball; and Carlos Collado with a 3.2 GPA who participates in football, basketball and track. Senior Paul Sundquist said it was an extremely beneficial program, and he

has already seen the results. “I worked on increasing my speed and fixing my gait,” said Paul. “I have a lot more control over my body and feel like I am more stable head to toe.” He said that through repetition of exercises that focused on isolating a certain section of his body, he was able to create more force. For Kyle Perry, the focus was on those areas that had suffered injury. “The focus was on strengthening my ankles,” said Kyle who suffered an ankle injury late last season. “So now when I do have problems, I know the exercises I need to do.” Kyle adds that he saw an increase in core strength as well.

As athletes travel through Sandpoint High School for years to come, Capt. David Lyon’s memory will live on. He was not only an American hero, but a hometown hero as well. If you would like your son or daughter to take part in this program, please contact Lisa Paull, program director and clinic manager at PneuThera (208.263.3100) and you can also get more information from Sandpoint High School’s athletic trainer Preston Lasley, ATC at 435.773.8901.

ootball season is here, and for Sandpoint High School’s equipment manager, Jarrett Robson, that means long days, long nights and a lot of laundry. From the time practice starts in midAugust to when the season winds down, Jarrett is busy making sure all 150 plus players are properly equipped and have all they need for practices and games. During practice days prior to the start of the school year, Jarrett is up early and arrives at the SHS weight room in advance of the players’ 8am arrival. He later leaves for his job where he works about 25 hours each week. Once school is in session, Jarrett usually arrives at school at around 2:30 in anticipation of the three-hour practice that begins at 3:15. And then there are the games.

“After Friday night games, I’ll come to the school on Sunday after I get off work to wash over 40 jerseys, pants and socks for the varsity team,” said Jarrett. “I like to make sure they are clean well in advance of the next game because with practice during the week, I’m very busy.” Known affectionately as “Jer Bear” by the players and coaches, Jarrett spends a lot of time adjusting helmets and pads and ensuring that each player’s gear is fitted properly. “My goal is to make it as simple as I can for the team and coaches,” said Jarrett. For away games, Jarrett loads his trailer with all the team bags, water jugs and other equipment and leaves for their destination in advance of the team so everything is there for them when they arrive. “I have to be ready to go when coach calls me for something, but normally I try to stay two steps ahead of the team,” said Jarrett of his ability to anticipate the team’s needs.

While Jarrett has been reimbursed for expenses in the past, his job is strictly volunteer. Last year he put 1,500 miles on his truck going to and from games, and he anticipates he will drive about 2,000 miles this year. “I love being with student athletes and seeing them grow into young men,” said Jarrett, who adds it means a lot to him to be able to part of that process, and he wouldn’t trade it for the world. Jarrett believes this year’s team will turn a lot of heads. “If they play together as a group and keep their minds on the game, nothing that can stop them,” he said. If there is one piece advice that he would like to share with the players, it is this – “Do not overlook anyone, whether it’s in football, school or life,” said Jarrett who then echoes Coach Puailoa’s sentiment. “You are only as strong as your weakest link.”

hen it comes to volunteerism, all one has to do is look at the Sandpoint High School football program to find many great people who give of their time and talent to help our youth become responsible members of our community. And it’s not just those who give to the program; it is the football players themselves who give back to the community that supports them. There are many projects that the SHS football players donate their time and strength to. Senior Kyle Perry said it is important to him that he give of his time to help with various projects in the Sandpoint community. It is his way of giving back. “I like helping the community because of all they do to support the (football) team’s endeavors,” said Kyle, adding that it is because of the community he has been provided the means to create special memories with his friends doing something he loves – playing football. Among the projects he has been involved in are the annual Long Bridge Swim, the Military Stand Down, helping set up for an art show and assisting with the takedown of the stage following Lost in the 50s. “You wouldn’t believe the amount of people we have calling who want help from our players,” said Coach Puailoa. “Our kids to a lot of community service.”

Good players inspire themselves, great players inspire others. You already inspire us every day! Love, Mom, Tom, Mikayla, Dad, Jennifer, Ty and Rylee

Senior Brett Hutchens said he enjoys giving back to the community. “It’s fun and it feels good to know we are helping others,” he said.

In addition to the kids, the coaches, many of whom also have full time jobs, spend countless hours with the members of the Sandpoint football program. They not only work on technique, but also provide the players the tools they need to become better individuals. “We need leaders and mentors to create an atmosphere where the players can reach peak performance,” said Coach Puailoa of the bond that is created among the student athletes and the coaching staff. “It is amazing the number of adults who are here every day even during the off season interacting with the kids.” Chris Lassen said that the coaches strive to work with the kids to help them become better academically as well. “If there is a student struggling, we will get them the help they need,” said Lassen. Just prior to the start of each season, coaches and varsity players travel to Camp Lutherhaven for Breakaway Camp — three days and two nights of team building. “It has nothing to do with football,” said Coach Puailoa. It is a special time spent with teammates and coaches. If you happen to see one of the players helping out at a community event, be sure to come forward and thank them for their efforts. In addition, a special thank you to all the coaches and other volunteers who give of their time to do what they can to help shape the players into the special young men they have become — not only dedicated football players, but members of the community who have a desire to give back to the place they call home.

Puailoa. “This year Eastern Washington University and Sandpoint High School were the two biggest purchasers of Riddell helmets in the Northwest.” The helmets are used by the NFL and just recently became available to colleges and high schools. And they are an important investment. In the past there have been years where a single SHS team suffered 15 concussions in one season. That number has been reduced dramatically by purchasing the top equipment available. “Our goal is to keep the kids as safe as possible,” said Puailoa. The funds raised have also been used to purchase blocking sleds, headsets for the coaches and uniforms just to name a few. Because each student’s ticket sales are documented, the number of sales made benefits the student directly, allowing him to offset the cost of camp, equipment, warm-ups and more. But the success also relies on those who donate time and resources to help maximize the profit from the car raffle, donating parts and services toward the restoration of the auctioned vehicle. Bulldog Automotive, owned by

Joe Duarte, has played a significant role in the restoration of the vehicles. In addition Gary Vanhorn has done a great deal to donate to the cause – his vehicle alone helped raise over $116,000 over the last two years for the Bulldog football program. There have also been donations from Napa Auto Parts, owned by Andrew and Susan Fingel, Auto Haus, owned by Bob Hovanski, Perfection Tire and Les Schwab. Why do so many of these people donate their resources to this cause? “We believe that any program that inspires the children of our community to seek excellence is well worth our support,” said Susan Fingel of Napa Auto Parts – Sandpoint. “The football program using a car raffle made sense to us because we could stretch our donation dollars further by supplying parts and supplies to aid in each car’s restoration.”

currently a freshman on the football team. He has been involved in the Junior Tackle program since the 5th grade, and they have been impressed with the program. As parents, Susan said they are grateful to others , such as Joe Duarte and Gary Vanhorn, who have donated countless hours and resources. “Really, it’s been a community success,” said Susan. “The Junior Tackle board and families as well as the SHS football coaches, families, and players all make it fun and successful.” In addition to Bulldog athletics, Susan said Napa Auto Parts takes pride in supporting other community programs. “We are proud to be a part of this community. Rallying behind great ideas and programs like Bulldog Athletics, Angels Over Sandpoint, Kinderhaven, and so many others is what drives our relationships and our principle to serve by any and all possible means.”

In addition to donating parts to the restoration of the vehicles, Napa Auto Parts – Sandpoint also donates paint, refinishing, and cleaning items.

Thank you to the all the kids and community members for a successful fundraiser and for making the Sandpoint football program one of the best around!

WHERE ARE THEY NOW?

CATCHING UP WITH THE FORMER BULLDOGS

T

hey come and they go through the years. Players and coaches who have contributed their time and talent to the Sandpoint High School football program. For many, the life of football does not stop simply because they move on. Here is a look at a few of those who have been an integral part of Bulldog football over the last several years. Cody Hecker He is the small town boy who showed us all that with perseverance, dreams do come true. Cody Hecker graduated from Sandpoint High School in 2010 where he played fullback, halfback and weak side defensive end. Cody went on to play for Eastern Washington University and graduated this summer with a degree in Communications and a minor in African Studies. For the first time in years, Cody will not be playing football this season, and it will definitely leave a void in his life. “My fondest memories of football at every level I have played is still as true now as it was then, and that’s the time, commitment, laughs, blood, sweat and tears type of camaraderie that was spent with every teammate and coach I have ever had the pleasure of being around,” said Cody.

Looking back on his days at Sandpoint High School, Cody said he is grateful to Coach Puailoa for helping him on his journey to play college football. “Coach Puailoa came to me and promised if I showed up everyday and made a commitment to getting better, he would teach me the knowledge and make me earn the right to make it to the next level of football,” said Cody. When asked what advice he would give to players who want to continue at the collegiate level, Cody said, “The absolute first thing any athlete needs to do is just make a decision on what you want and make the choice to do it,” said Cody. “If you want to play football in college, then you need to say to yourself this is what I am going to do and be prepared that it is going to require all of you.” He advises that it is not an easy task, but if one is willing to do the work and put in the time, it is worth it 100 percent. “Once you make this decision, you must immediately start working on your body. Lift, stretch, do lots of speed and footwork drills and try your best to eat healthy, because the day that you are not doing it, there’s hundreds of others your age who are.” Mike Mitchell Mike Mitchell led the SHS varsity football team for six years, from 2006 to 2011. And not only was he the coach, but he also served as Assistant Principal during that time as well.

home to the states where he was offered the head football position at the North Medford Black Tornado. “In 2013 we went 10-2 and last year we went 8-3 and went deep into the play-offs both years,” said Mitchell who is still with the Tornado but took a professional job in Sweden, where he was three wins away from the national title at the time of our interview. Mitchell shared that his greatest adventure of coaching in a different culture came when he took his Croatia team to Serbia for a non-conference game. “These guys had been killing each other in 1991, and we had a police escort for 142 miles getting into the game site. Pre-game I had never seen such tension. They were giving each other dirty looks and racial slurs,” said Mitchell. “Once the game began, it was three hours of normal for both teams. Guys would hit and then help each other up. They would slap each other on the fanny after good plays. I saw what athletic competition can really do. It eliminated the hate of those players for three hours. They shook hands and walked off the field after the game. And even though it was only for hours, they all saw that we are all the same. It was a great moment in sports for me to see the power of this.” Mitchell said as he reflects on his time at SHS, he felt privileged to be part of the Sandpoint High School’s administrative team. “I feel that was a very important time in history for that school, and we grew tremendously during that six years. I was proud of every single teacher and peer administrators during that run. I will always treasure being part of that growth,” he said.

In a recent interview from Sweden where he currently serves as head coach of a professional team, Coach Mitchell reflected on the great memories he had while in Sandpoint. His greatest accomplishment he said was inning the Inland Empire Championship four of the six years he led the team. “That was in 2006, 2008, 2009 and 2010,” said Coach Mitchell. “The 2009 team was our greatest accomplishment as we went all the way to the State Championship final. We

lost 29-23, but it was a great effort by a great bunch of kids.” Since leaving Sandpoint, Mitchell has experienced the thrill of coaching teams around the globe. And he has been successful. “I left Sandpoint to take a professional job in Croatia with the Zagreb Patriots. We went 7-0 in the country of Croatia and won the National Championship 61-0. It was a thrill to watch that team grow,” said Mitchell who then returned

Mitchell and his wife Gail still return to Sandpoint regularly, and he said he plans on returning one day and seeing many more games in Barlow Stadium. “I miss everything about Sandpoint. The athletes, the fans, the parents, the school,” said Mitchell. “I can tell you this - there is no place like Barlow Stadium on a Friday night. It is a beautiful stadium and it is a town that is happening.” Mitchell said if he were to give any advice to the young football players of today, it is to work hard and listen to their coaches. “Football is one of the last places young boys can get discipline in today’s world. No one wants discipline, but we all need it and

need to learn how to use it. There are not a lot of other places where we learn we have to count on the guy beside us for our success. It is not the eleven best on the field - it is the best eleven that play together. That is the lesson football teaches us!” Nick Magro A 2012 graduate of Sandpoint High School, Nick was determined to continue to play the sport he loves. He recently played at College of the Redwoods in Eureka, California and transferred to Bethel College in Kansas this fall where he will continue to pursue his degree in kinesiology and a minor in business. “Once I graduate, I plan on being a personal trainer and opening up my own gym,” said Nick. He wants younger athletes to know that it is possible to achieve your dream and play at the college level. He said he enjoys everything about playing college football. “(I enjoy) the atmosphere, the speed of the game, the brotherhood, the challenge and everything in between,” said Nick. He has fond memories of his days at Sandpoint High School. “Even though I only played at SHS my junior and senior years, those years I’ll remember my whole life. My favorite memory of playing at SHS, was the amount of people that showed up to our games and also the atmosphere around town when it was game week,” shared Nick, who played tight-end and outside linebacker for the Bulldogs. While it has been sometimes challenging to balance school and football, he said he encourages younger players to do all they can to follow their dream. “Fall in love with the weight room, and surround yourself with people with the same goals.” Former SHS players to watch: Tim and Todd Pays – Carroll College Nate and Josh Loutzenheiser – Montana State University – Northern Sam Palmer – Eastern Oregon Matt Timothy – Liberty University
