editorial álbum 5 jairogudino There are millions of pictures in Instagram that show us the beauty of the world: twilights at the beach, birds over electrical cables, beautiful buildings, really cute cats, nice feet on the sand, selfies of pretty people smiling… sunsets at the beach, birds on high voltage lines, beautiful buildings, really cute cats, nice feet on the sand, pretty selfies of smiling people… but there are some Igers who go to the other side, who show us the images of the other half of life in the world, the part that’s not so pretty, but is real. Those images show how difficult it is to live in the streets, the problems of countries suffering from hunger, pollution, war. The outcries of people who fight for freedom of speech. The traces left by oppressive governments that violate human rights. So, this edition of Likes is dedicated to those Igers who face danger in order to get us pictures that have an important story to tell. Likes asked for and received contributions from a lot of places around the world. This is the result. You are all welcome to Likes 5
Existen millones de fotografías en Instagram que nos muestran lo lindo del mundo. Atardeceres frente al mar, pájaros sobre cables eléctricos, contrapicado de edificios hermosos, gatos muy cuchis, pies bonitos en la arena, selfies de gente guapa que sonríe... pero también hay algunos igers que van al otro lado, que nos muestran las imágenes de la otra parte de la vida en el mundo, la que no es linda pero es real. Esas imágenes reflejan lo duro que es vivir en la calle, los problemas de los pueblos con hambre, polución, guerra. El clamor de los que luchan por la libertad de expresión. Las huellas de la represión que dejan los gobiernos que violan los derechos humanos. Vale decir, que el equipo de Likes ha decidido dedicar esta edición a todos los igers que se enfrentan al peligro para traer tantas imágenes que tienen una gran historia que contar. Likes solicitó y recibió contribuciones desde todos los rincones del mundo. Este es el resultado. Sean todos bienvenidos a Likes 5.

Charity: Water is a non-profit organization with the objective of bringing safe and clean drinking water to the people in developing nations. All of its public donations are used to fund projects all over the world. They have already given more than $55 million to fund more than 9,000 projects in 20 countries including Ethiopia, Rwanda and Malawi. But they need help, because there are still 800 million people in the world without access to clean water. Thanks to Charity:water there is hope and we can easily help Charity: Water es una organización sin fines de lucro cuyo objetivo principal es llevarle agua saludable y limpia a personas en países en desarrollo. Todas las donaciones recibidas son dedicadas a financiar proyectos en todo el mundo. Hasta el momento, han invertido más de 55 millones de dólares en 9000 proyectos en 20 países, incluyendo Etiopía, Ruanda y Malawi. La Organización necesita ayuda, porque aún quedan 800 millones de personas que no tienen acceso a agua potable. Gracias a Charity: Water ellos tienen esperanzas y nosotros podemos ayudar.

Bricio Segovia has a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the Pompeo Fabra University. He started in the media in front of the microphone in some of the most important radio stations in Spain. Bricio knew how to unite his passion for radio and written journalism on the newspaper “20 Minutos”. After working for a season in front and behind cameras in United States, he went back to his native Barcelona as EFE’s reporter. In 2010 he moved to Moscow, where he offered special coverage to the Colombian channel NTN24 (taken off-air in Venezuela by decision of Nicolas Maduro’s governmen). Segovia is also part of the team from the Russian TV Channel RT and has been broadcasting in direct from a lot of countries from the ex Soviet Union orbit. He has covered the Arab revolution from Egypt to Libya. This is the Ukrainian crisis through his images.

Bricio Segovia es Licenciado en Periodismo de la Universidad Pompeu Fabra y se inició en los medios de comunicación ante los micrófonos de las principales emisoras de radio de España. Supo compaginar su pasión por la radio con el periodismo escrito en el diario “20 minutos”. Luego de trabajar una temporada delante y detrás de las cámaras en Estados Unidos, volvió a su Barcelona natal como reportero de EFE, la agencia de noticias líder en información en español. En 2010, se trasladó a la delegación de Moscú, desde donde ofreció coberturas especiales para el canal internacional colombiano NTN24 (señal sacada del aire en Venezuela por decisión interna del gobierno de Nicolás Maduro). Segovia forma parte del equipo de reporteros del canal de televisión ruso RT y ha informado en directo desde numerosos países de la ex órbita soviética. También ha cubierto la revolución del mundo árabe desde Egipto y Libia. Les mostramos la crisis de Ukrania a través de sus imágenes.

“We need a world away from prejudices” “Necesitamos un mundo lejos de sus prejuicios”
Pachi Tamer
His name is Pachi Tamer. He was born in Argentina and he’s a publicist, a photographer and a social worker. He is one of those people who gets into trouble all the time with the intention to solving them. And most of the times he fails. One day he moved to London without even speaking a word of English and with just a thousand dollars in his pocket. He survived for a year. He sold photos in the streets, worked cleaning dishes, in construction and even as an air conditioner mechanic, all of that before he was deported for working illegally. He went back to Buenos Aires to work in advertising until he received an offer from New York for 60 thousand dollars a year. Life was smiling at him. He moved to an apartment in front of the Empire State, he fell in love with a beautiful girl and they moved together. Later, he moved to Austin, Texas. There he married and had a daughter named Elena. When Elena was one year and a half years old, in October of 2010, Pachi’s parents got into a car accident.

Su nombre es Pachi Tamer, nació en Argentina, es publicista, fotógrafo y trabajador social. Es una de esas personas que se mete en problemas todo el tiempo, con la intención de resolverlos, aunque casi siempre fracasa. Un día se fue a Londres sin hablar una palabra de Inglés, con sólo 1000 dólares. Sobrevivió un año. Vendió fotos en la calle, trabajó lavando platos, en construcción e instalando equipos de aire acondicionado, hasta que lo deportaron por trabajar ilegalmente. Volvió a su país a trabajar en publicidad un tiempo, hasta que obtuvo una oferta en una agencia de Nueva York por 60 mil dólares al año. La vida parecía sonreírle, se mudó a un apartamento frente al Empire State, se enamoró de una chica hermosa y empezaron a vivir juntos. Más adelante su mudó a Austin, Texas. Allí se casó y tuvo una hija, Elena se llama. Cuando Elena tenía 1 año y medio, en octubre del 2010, los padres de Pachi tuvieron un accidente de tránsito.

Pachi took the first plane to Argentina. He found his father in a coma and her mother with all her bones broken. His father remained in that condition for 10 months until he died. Five months earlier, he got into a fight with her wife and the next day he received divorce papers. He lost his house, his daughter and was homeless. At that time, he used Instagram as everyone else, taking photos of the sky, a bird. Until he met a guy and he asked if he could take a picture and gave him a dollar for it. They started talking and when the guy told him his story, Pachi’s problems became really small. And that’s how his project born: he was going to take photos of street people, the homeless. He found in them all the support he needed. Their stories made him notice he was a very fortunate person. He had much to be thankful for. He started to tell their stories through his photos. He gave them one dollar for each story. Instagram became the platform for “One Dollar Dreams”, a project which he ould make come true the dreams of some of his subjects with the help of his followers, an Iphone and an app.

Pachi tomó el primer avión a Argentina, se encontró con su padre en coma y su madre con todos los huesos quebrados. Su padre se mantuvo en esa condición durante 10 meses hasta que falleció. 5 meses antes, tuvo una discusión con su esposa y al día siguiente recibió una demanda de divorcio. Perdió su casa, su hija y quedó en la calle. En ese entonces usaba Instagram, sacaba fotos al cielo, a un pajarito... hasta que se encontró con un señor al que le pidió sacarle una foto y le dio un dólar como recompensa. Se quedó hablando con él y, en cuanto el hombre le contó su historia, los problemas de Pachi se hicieron pequeñitos. Fue en ese momento que nació su proyecto: retratar gente de la calle. En ellos encontró el apoyo que necesitaba, sus cuentos le hicieron darse cuenta de que él realmente era muy afortunado. Así se dedicó a contar sus historias a través de sus fotos, dando un dólar por cada relato. Instagram fue la plataforma de lanzamiento de One Dollar Dreams, proyecto con el cual ha hecho realidad los sueños de algunos de los retratados, con la ayuda de sus seguidores, un iPhone y una aplicación.

At Medellin he took Alex, an addict that lived on the streets, to a rehab Hospital and, at Austin, he helped someone to found a job as a chef, all with the help of his followers. He made more tan 3000 portraits. Each one with the person’s name and many with their story. Last year he went on a road trip around most of the United States. 10,000 miles and 13 cities: Austin, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Denver, Saint Louis, Detroit, NewYork, Washington, Atlanta, Miami, Key West, New Orleans and then, back to Austin. Strangers opened his arms to him. They gave him a place to sleep, food and a lot of support. In San Francisco he invited a homeless person to travel with him. They traveled together for a month and they parted ways in Key West. Besides the portraits, he filmed the trip as a documentary. He is now working at an advertising agency in Dallas. Nowadays Elena has her own site, with her experience of growing up with her father. Here we dedicate these pages to a few of Pachi’s best portraits from his Project One Dollar Dreams.

En Medellín llevó a Alex, un adicto que vivía en la calle, a una clínica de rehabilitación, y en Austin ayudó a otra persona a consiguir un trabajo de chef, todo con la ayuda de sus seguidores. Hizo más de 3.000 retratos. Cada uno con su nombre y muchos con su historia. El año pasado viajó por carretera por casi todo Estados Unidos: 10.000 millas y 13 ciudades. Austin, Las Vegas, Los Ángeles, San Francisco, Denver, Saint Louis, Detroit, New York, Washington, Atlanta, Miami, Key West, New Orleans y de regreso a Austin. Gente desconocida le abrió los brazos. Le dieron techo, comida, y mucho aliento. En San Francisco invitó a un mendigo a viajar con él. Viajaron juntos por un mes y se separaron en Key West. Además de los retratos, documentó su viaje en videos. Actualmente trabaja en una agencia de publicidad en Dallas y hoy Elena tiene su propio site lleno de videos de cómo ha crecido junto a su padre. There are thousand of arrests, and there are inhuman handlings. There is public property destroyed by the most radical youngsters apposing the government: it is an angry crowd ignited because others stay at home, others don’t protest, others don’t barricade their own streets with trash and wood and old junk. There are confrontations between neighbors. The steel cable and barbed wire closing the streets have already killed people. And the lack of sewers lids also. Otra renace para explicar lo que oculta el espejo: fascismo. Hay medios censurados y hay medios sociales rugiendo entre la velocidad de la información y los rumores. La Guardia Nacional Bolivariana detiene a algunos periodistas y los patea y les decomisa sus cámaras y tarjetas de memoria. Ese es el oficio en el frente de batalla. These images show a part of this Venezuela shaken by its own fighting sons, and that between February and March registers the highest number of arrests in its history. It is fair to say, for the time being, that the worst part of war doesn’t come while it’s on, it comes right after. Here the present isn’t clear, do not even think about the future. Esas imágenes reflejan un lado de esta Venezuela sacudida por sus propios hijos que combaten, y que entre febrero y marzo registra el mayor número de detenciones en su historia. There are broken dreams vanishing through our unfair and badly distributed world. In it, pictures: remain hidden in the dark room. Moments succeeding each other, identical regardless of the place, marked by shortages, pain, despair, and yet, full of gazes telling a story about human contact, courage and the strength of human essence. This is a reminder of those who live in the shadows, the most vulnerable, it is an homage to the authors who approach them with dignity and respect, with the intention that every image makes us feel and discover realities of those who live between silence and screams.

Cientos de sueños rotos se esfuman por nuestro injusto y mal repartido mundo, en él hay fotos que permanecen escondidas en el cuarto oscuro: instantes sucedidos unos a otros, idénticos en cualquier lugar, marcados por la carencia, el dolor, la desesperanza, y sin embargo, colmados de miradas que cuentan acerca de contactos, de valor y fuerza en la esencia humana. Como una manera de recordar a quien vive en la sombra, a los más vulnerables, como un homenaje a los autores, que se acercan a ellos con dignidad y respeto, con la intención de que cada imagen nos haga sentir y descubrir las realidades de aquellos que habitan entre los gritos y el silencio.

Efecto eco is a digital movement created to help fight for freedom of speech and to replicate the voice of
venezuelan voices Support
students who protest in the streets in Venezuela. It was born out of the anxiety of communicators, artists and creators who wanted to give a voice to victims of repression who don’t have anyone to represent them. The project was creatd by @sarrechedera and @ mariannaburelli in Mexico, it replicated in Miami, Los Angeles, New York, Barcelona…until finally reaching Caracas, where @marcelrasquin and @jairogudino united people like Laureano Márquez (historian and stand-up comedian), César Miguel Rondón (journalist and radio broadcaster), Nelson Bocaranda (journalist and radio broadcaster), Sócrates Serrano (actor) and many other Venezuelan figures, to echo what is happening in Venezuela. By the closing of this edition ok Likes, the @efectoeco videos had been seen by 3 million people around the world.

There is a phrase from the philosopher Gilles Deleuze that can illustrate the closest thing to the coordinates of happiness: “there is no space for fear nor for hope. There’s only space for new weapons”. If you read it out of context or without the presence freedom in present tense, that phrase may sound extreme, and even rude. But this phrase shines with a whole new light, in a context where extreme highs and lows assures the complete absence of monotony. Fear and the hope exist just a few steps ahead of the moment when we feel them. They are beyond our real time decisions. They’re feelings waiting for us, way ahead. Fear and hope are our tools to negotiate with what comes next. And those new weapons Gilles mentioned are the ones that allow us to live our present. That’s how our personal choices and individual freedom have found their own space in our lives. In order to live, to love, to feel, we need to live in the present. That’s how complete geographic entities emancipated themselves from their geographic boundaries and created their own space: their freedom to live in their present. Existe una frase del filósofo Gilles Deleuze que se puede parecer a las coordenadas de la felicidad: “No hay lugar para el temor ni para la esperanza. Sólo cabe buscar nuevas armas”. Si. Leída sin un contexto o, peor aún, sin la amabilidad de la libertad en tiempo presente, puede parecer una frase severa, cruda, tajante. Esta misma frase, repetida en medio de un territorio cuyos altos y bajos aseguren la extinción absoluta de la monotonía, cambia. Reluce. El temor y la esperanza están puestos unos pasos más allá del momento en que los sentimos. Están fuera de las decisiones del presente. Son regiones que, desde mucho antes de aparecer, ya están aguardando, esperando por nosotros allá adelante. Son nuestra manera de negociar con lo que viene.
