Editorial

We have closed another chapter in the history of LIKO-S group, entitled Fiscal Year 2023/2024, and I am delighted that this chapter can be counted among the successful ones. However, success doesn‘t come easy, and the positive outcome of the just-ended fiscal year required a great deal of effort and concern. This makes our joy in these results all the greater.

At LIKO-S, a.s., after two less successful years heavily influenced by external factors, we nearly met our revenue target, achieving a total revenue of 448 million CZK (17,8 mil. EUR). Although this is slightly below the plan, we were only 6 million CZK short, representing 99% of our target. It‘s an excellent result compared to previous years.

We exceeded our profit plan by 101%, thanks partly to implemented savings in operations and production. The past fiscal year has been very positive regarding meeting our goals. We enter the coming year with high ambitions and plan to grow our revenue by 20 %. I believe that we have the capabilities and resources to meet this plan, and at the end of this fiscal year, we will again be celebrating the successful achievement of our goals.

Among our foreign branches, Slovakia was the most successful. The team there did a tremendous amount of work, and they significantly exceeded the planned revenue and profit. We achieved a turnover of 49.5 million CZK in the Hungarian branch, even without a complete sales team. In India, we increased our revenue by 47% compared to the previous year and even managed to increase our profit, exceeding our plans. The Austrian branch achieved a turnover of 8.2 million CZK. Our youngest branch is still in the start-up phase, but in the upcoming year, the branch should

continue to grow and move closer to higher profitability. Overall, we achieved a revenue of 623 million CZK for the construction group and a profit of 40.5 million CZK. This represents a 13% increase in revenue over the previous year.

In recent years at LIKO-S, we have faced numerous challenges and undergone significant changes in management, processes, and staffing. However, these changes have only made us stronger and more efficient, demonstrating our resilience and adaptability as a company.

Thanks to our past successes and the groundwork we have laid, we are well-prepared for further development. Our plan for the next fiscal year is ambitious, including a larger number of investments in people, equipment, and technology. These investments will enable us to continue our growth trajectory, and I am confident that we will not only maintain our leadership position but also create better buildings for people and nature in the future.

The

Journey Begins

Remember when we were just planting our first palm tree in India?

The story began in 2012 at the Brno Engineering Trade Fair, Pavilion Z, where the vibrant showcase of India caught the attention of Libor and Honza. Among the exhibitors stood Mr. Prakash, beckoning them to explore his small stall as the closing hours approached.

With a firm grip on Libor‘s hand, Mr. Prakash pulled him to watch a video showcasing his engineering firm. Initially hesitant, Libor soon noticed striking similarities between their companies— they were both family-owned, both delved into engineering and interior equipment, and both were founded in 1992. After a tour of LIKO-S‘s plant in Slavkov, Mr. Prakash declared, “From now on, Pushpak will be your representation in Bangalore.” Thus, our Indian adventure began, intertwining business and cultural exploration.

A brief history 02

It started with “Namaste” and “Ahoj” and a bit of jet-lag.

Through collective efforts, we not only built a successful business but also forged familial friendships. The collaboration between our companies opened doors for numerous Czech firms in the Indian market. Mr. Prakash also became the Honorary Consul of the Czech Republic in India.

LIKO-S ranks among the Czech pioneers who dared to enter the Indian market.

In the world of interior design, the name LIKO-S is synonymous with innovation and quality. Let‘s draw inspiration from our recent projects in Austria and Hungary, where our commitment to excellence and creativity comes to life in every space we transform.

Accelerating Growth in Austria

LIKO-S in Austria is expanding at a breakneck pace, completing one project after another. Take inspiration from the recently completed installation of glass partitions at the Biogena branch in Baden, a renowned Austrian brand.

Biogena, a prominent Austrian family business, specializes in developing and producing premium dietary supplements from pure substances. The company places great emphasis on human health and environmental protection. This philosophy is reflected in every aspect of its operations, including the design and functionality of its facilities. Consequently, the new premium branch project required a solution that would honor core values such as purity, simplicity, elegance, and flexibility. Our Micra I series of frameless glass partitions meets all these requirements.

The glass partition separates an area used for diagnostic services and health consulting within the interior. Ensuring maximum privacy for clients was crucial, which was comfortably achieved through the acoustic properties and soundproofing of the Micra glass partition. Visual privacy is provided by stylish curtains, which also contribute to making the interior more cozy.

“One of the most interesting features of this project was the custom-made sliding doors divided into three sections.

These doors offer the flexibility to open according to current needs, allowing for versatile use of the space.”

Country Manager, Austria Martina Konecká

Tallest wooden high-rise and our partitions

Our glass partitions and interior doors now grace the second highest wooden building in the world—HoHo Vienna. At LIKO-S, we are not just proud, but deeply honored to have played a part in this architectural marvel, a shining example of innovation and eco-friendliness in Vienna‘s skyline. Our MICRA I glass partitions and custom interior doors, installed within one of the office spaces, are a testament to our unwavering commitment to modern, sustainable design.

The MICRA I glass partitions, available in single and double glazed options, provide excellent acoustic insulation and flexible space division. This versatility is essential in today‘s dynamic workplace environments, allowing the creation of private work areas and collaborative spaces. Our commitment to adaptability in office design ensures that our solutions meet evolving needs while complementing the building‘s wooden structure and sustainability goals.

Being part of such a pioneering project is not just a privilege, but a testament to our commitment to sustainability and innovation. HoHo Vienna‘s status as the second tallest wooden building in the world highlights the innovative use of materials and construction techniques that perfectly align with our values.

Creating History in Budapest

Corvinus University in Hungary has undergone an extensive transformation, including the construction of a new campus at the historic site of the former School of Public Administration in Budapest. One of the project‘s main elements was the incorporation of glazed partitions and interior systems that underscore the aesthetics of modern design.

We supplied OMEGA glazed framed partitions, which are essential for the overall look of the campus interior. These partitions are designed to allow as much light in as possible, creating an open and airy environment. This setup is perfect for encouraging cooperation and communication among students and the faculty.

Thanks to their simple yet effective design and functionality, these partitions are perfect for modern educational settings, focusing on openness and connecting different spaces visually.

The new Corvinus University campus represents a fusion of history and innovation. The design of the new buildings was inspired by the original structures and focused on creating a brighter and more spacious environment that harmoniously fits

into the surrounding villa buildings on Gellért Hill. Sustainability and environmental consciousness were prioritized in the construction process.

The campus uses solar panels and geothermal heat pumps, making it Hungary‘s most environmentally friendly educational building. Furthermore, 82% of the debris from the old building was recycled, emphasizing the university‘s dedication to protecting the environment.

Glazed partitions maximize natural light, reducing the need for artificial lighting and boosting the building‘s energy efficiency.

and environmental consciousness were prioritized during the construction process... ”

A new chapter for LIKO-S Hungary

How did you begin your journey with LIKO-S?

I joined LIKO-S three years ago as an assistant. Thanks to the opportunities for further development and education, I quickly took on the coordinator role. I managed deliveries, planning, and was entrusted with overseeing key processes, which I am very grateful for.

Can you tell us more about your education and experiences before joining LIKO-S?

I studied psychology, and after moving to Budapest, I wanted to change my professional direction. LIKO-S allowed me to work in a dynamic environment where experienced and interpersonal skills are valued. This combination suited me well and allowed me to utilize my abilities while continually learning new things.

What does stepping into leadership mean to you, and how significant is this challenge?

Moving into a leadership role is indeed a significant challenge for me. However, I am backed by a fantastic team, without whom I would never have taken on this role. We have a tremendous Hungarian team that supports each other. Maya Vereb, who will continue to be part of our team and as my mentor, plays a significant role in this. Another mentor of mine is the experienced Roman Macko. I am immensely grateful to both and appreciate their trust in me. However, I am well aware that I still have much to learn.

After a remarkable journey of three years at LIKO-S, Tamara Kiss is now taking the reins from Maya Vereb, who has led the Hungarian branch for 23 years.

Tamara‘s rapid progression from an assistant to a coordinator, coupled with her youthful energy, brings a fresh perspective and a strong commitment to further elevate LIKO-S Hungary‘s success in the market.

Who or what is your biggest inspiration?

My biggest inspiration in my professional life is Maya Vereb. She has been with LIKO-S for 23 years and essentially built the Hungarian branch. Her entire body of work is admirable, and she has a wealth of experience. I am grateful for the energy she invests in me and for teaching me. I still have a long road ahead and am glad to have her by my side. I also find inspiration in my personal life – my family is made of entirely of strong women, with my grandmother being my most incredible role model.

What does your current Hungarian team look like, and what are your strengths?

Our Hungarian team is relatively small, currently made up of seven members. As Maya says, “We are like one family.” We operate differently than larger teams. In such a small team, you must be able to adapt more and occasionally take on multiple roles. We all help each other out, and if someone needs to catch up, we step in to assist. Having someone to turn to, we genuinely pull together. That is our greatest strength.

What are your plans for developing the Hungarian branch?

The Hungarian market holds immense potential, and with our own production capabilities, we are uniquely positioned to swiftly respond to specific customer requirements. I plan to expand our presence into new segments like industrial facilities and the hospitality sector, tapping into these promising areas. Thanks to our smaller but highly specialized team, we can efficiently implement innovations and improve our processes, ensuring we stay ahead of the curve. I also plan to strengthen our sales team and enhance internal communication between our branch and our headquarters in Slavkov u Brna, fostering a more cohesive and efficient operation.

Green facades for cooling urban hotspots

As temperature records tumble one after the other since the start of the year, optimists may revel in the early onset of summer, but realists and experts are sounding the alarm. Yet, the solution has been known for a long time.

The United Nations initially declared World Water Day on March 22 as a reminder of the one billion people who do not have access to safe drinking water on our planet. This issue barely affects us, so we consider this day among other less significant holidays. However, it‘s a mistake to underestimate the importance of water, the foundation of life on Earth. While the notion may sound slightly more serious, we often think of a few refreshing sips in the summer heat, and life goes on.

Yet, the conversation about water is deeply intertwined with heat, particularly here in Europe. The number of tropical days when the temperature exceeds thirty degrees increases from here towards the equator. And it rises dramatically as the years go by. Spring starts earlier, autumn later, and the gap in the middle of summer is filled by days when we sweat outside and we don‘t sleep at night.

Scientists predict that the number of tropical days here will soon increase by two to six annually. For years, we‘ve been hammered with the idea that this is due to carbon emitted by humans into the atmosphere. Since resisting this hammering is natural, we prefer to wait and see what happens. We‘ll wait until steamships stop puffing on the seas, until China and India ban smoking chimneys at factories and car exhausts on their roads, and until that part of the Union that invented the Green Deal collapses. And the heat? At least it will shorten the winter, which has been worthless for years, and improve the quality of wine in Moravia and even in Bohemia. When things get worse, we‘ll all just buy air conditioners. When I asked locals in a scorched area in Greece when their current hellish conditions began, they told me, „When we all had air conditioners here.“ An air conditioner is a heat pump that extracts heat from a heated building into its surroundings, warming it even more. The electricity it consumes is converted into heat. We are mistaken if we think that the heat will somehow disappear or evaporate in the cities or countryside. From our constant hammering, we now understand that carbon in the atmosphere turns our planet into a greenhouse. The law of conservation of energy tells us that the heat remains here

“We have known for a long time that green facades have a cooling effect and can thermally stabilize buildings.

Unfortunately, this area of green construction has not yet been the focus of sufficient research.

Therefore, we are very pleased that such research has taken place in our facility and has proven what we have been trying to convey to the public for many years...”

Co-Founder & Co-Owner, LIKO-S, a. s.

with us, logically meaning there is more of it every year. We don‘t want to dismantle the greenhouse in the sky, and under the boiler, we‘re heating up more and more. Not just with technologies that emit heat but mainly with buildings that heat up like radiators in summer. Every square meter of solid surface exposed to sunlight emits thermal energy. When we replace vegetation in nature with roofs, parking lots, and roads, we turn on the heating in nature.

On a sunny day, about one gigawatt of heat is released there, equivalent to the output of one nuclear reactor block at Temelín. However, according to available data, construction continues in the Czech Republic at a rate of up to ten hectares per day. Our country has shown one of the highest temperature increases on the planet in recent years. How can we stop our planet from warming further? With water. The evaporation of one liter of water consumes solar energy equivalent to 0.7 kilowatt-hours. From one liter of water, twelve hundred liters of steam are produced. This is the energetic effect that set machines in motion and started the Industrial Revolution about 150 years ago. When we look at the temperature increase pattern on the planet, it began in those years.

Water helped us then, and it helps us now. After all, water was at the origin of life on Earth, so let it continue to work for us. It knows how.

Our country has shown one of the highest temperature increases on the planet in recent years...

Libor Musil

Water and plants hold the key to cooling our environment. When the sun shines on a solid surface, it heats. But when it shines on a plant, it cools. This is due to plant photosynthesis, a natural process that we can harness to our advantage. A tree, for example, evaporates a hundred liters of water a day and, during ten hours of sunlight, provides a cooling power of seven kilowatts. That‘s like having two roaring air conditioning units on your facade. This natural cooling effect, combined with the oxygen production and CO2 consumption of plants, offers a promising solution to the heat problem. To shame the technologies we‘ve created, add to the cooling power of such a tree the fact that the decomposition of water in plants produces 620 liters of oxygen from one liter of water. A plant under the sun cools, produces oxygen, and consumes CO2. Isn‘t this the perfect technology?

Just a few years ago, I didn‘t know much about this. We built halls and houses in the European landscape like radiators without even realizing it. Today, we build houses like trees. We build halls and houses that, thanks to water and plants, cool themselves and their surroundings. Each of us can contribute to the fight against global warming. Just cover the radiative surfaces on the roof with greenery and add green irrigated facades. Then, in the summer, instead of a heated house, you have a large natural air conditioning unit that cools the interior of the building and the greenery around it. Trees and shrubs planted next to such buildings grow four times faster than those planted in the open

nature or beside traditional buildings. By making these small changes, we can make a big difference in reducing the heat in our environment.

Photosynthesis stops working at forty degrees Celsius, which is the temperature our summer streets, cities, and countryside reach before noon. When we look at a color photograph of our planet, we see a yellow-brown strip in the middle where photosynthesis no longer functions. These are regions where life is hardest today. But once, there was greenery there too. The boundary of the world of photosynthesis is gradually moving north with rising temperatures.

We are still determining how quickly we can rid our skies of carbon and what is needed. We‘re all gradually discovering, comparing, and trying it out. We must not stop, but it still takes time. A perfect hit, however, is recognizing the tremendous effect of water-saturated plants on reducing temperature and producing oxygen. This phenomenon was at the origin of life on Earth when, about two billion years ago, cyanobacteria in the sea realized that with photosynthesis, the life on this planet was better. Gradually, they emerged from the water, and year after year, step by step, they evolved and covered the land of this planet. Today, we are going in the opposite direction.

Let‘s make a change!

Photosynthesis stops working at 40 °C, which is the temperature our summer streets and countryside reach before noon...

This text was published in Forbes as a reflection by Libor Musil on International Water Day.

The surface temperature of plants does not exceed 30 °C.However, the concrete can heat up to 60 °C in the summer.

Confirmed: Green facades are cooling us down

We are witnessing significant climatic changes that bring about unnatural behavior in nature, which is undoubtedly bad news for us. Yet, the solution has been known for a long time.

Green facades, a key element in the fight against urban heat islands, can significantly help reduce temperatures during the sweltering summers anticipated this year.

We have highlighted their positive effects for over a decade, with clear evidence from our experiences with the green facade at the LIKO-Vo research center, LIKO-Noe.

Recently, the cooling effect of vegetative facades has also been confirmed by professional measurements taken last summer.

Key Findings:

- Cooling Effect: Compared to white sheet metal, which can reach temperatures above 60 °C (140 °F) in the sun during summer days, green facades maintain a temperature around 30 °C (86 °F), thanks to water evaporation.

- Temperature Stabilization: Water evaporation ensures that green facades can cool during the day and contribute to a more stable microclimate.

- Importance of Vertical Orientation: Green facades are vertically oriented, which is advantageous from a human thermal comfort perspective. They provide a cooling effect exactly where it is most needed.

Experts from the ENKI research organization conducted measurements that demonstrated how green facades can reduce temperatures in urban settings. In comparison with white sheet metal, which can reach up to 60 °C in the summer months, green facades maintain a pleasant temperature of around 30 °C, thanks to the evaporation of water through plants.

This evaporation cools people in the summer and creates a comfortable environment. Behind the cooling effect of green facades lies a simple natural principle—photosynthesis. One square meter of vegetative systems, created from a hydroponic system like Biotile, can evaporate 3 liters of water per day, thus cooling its surroundings. A relatively small green facade with an area of about 20 m2 can achieve a cooling effect similar to that of two standard air conditioners.

Green facades represent not only a practical solution but also an aesthetic solution for our overheated urban landscapes. They help us rediscover our connection with nature in an urbanized world and promise a cooler, healthier living environment.

Curved contours shape Organica building

The ORGANICA building has risen on an urbanistically relaxed area of a former brownfield in Ostrava, Czech republic, which allowed the design of a distinctive solitaire building with striking and unusual architecture.

The floor plan resembles a four-leaf propeller with an open circular atrium...

Unique project enlivened by mature trees and seating combined with retail spaces, a canteen, a fitness center, and a café.

The heart of the building is a central circular atrium, serving as the main hub connecting different parts. The building‘s design maximizes natural light, thanks to its glass facades. Elevators, staircases, and necessary facilities are strategically placed in less-lit areas, ensuring efficiency and comfort.

„The building‘s interior combines raw concrete with visible technical elements, creating an industrial yet refined look. This is softened by wooden slats in key areas. The office spaces are bright and open, achieved through the extensive use of MICRA I and MICRA II glass partitions. These partitions bring in light and offer expansive views across multiple rooms.

The bright interior is complemented by elements of wood and a large amount of atypical furniture, which emotionally separates the individual spaces. Elements of greenery are abundantly applied through green walls, hanging planters, flower boxes, and dividing furniture elements stacked with houseplants,“ described her design Ing. arch. Ladislava Hadačová from the Prague architectural studio Schindler Seko Architects, who is also a co-author of the building project.

We instaled the frameless all-glazed partitions, MICRA I and MICRA II.

In addition to these, we are also providing several types of doors, fire rated partitions, and complete acoustic solutions for the office spaces.

Miroslav Šenkýř

W(i)elding the titans

At LIKO-S Industry, we take pride in our recent accomplishmentan extraordinary stainless steel lamella designed for wastewater treatment. This remarkable structure rivals the size and weight of the giant extinct mammoths.

Our skilled welders handle various projects annually, some metaphorically comparable in size to single-family homes. Among these impressive endeavors is the lamella separator, meticulously crafted to remove impurities from wastewater. We have completed our largest piece yet: a towering structure standing six meters tall and spanning over three meters wide, with a hefty total weight of approximately eight tons.

The creation of this monumental product was a testament to the dedication of five skilled welders. Over the course of just under eight weeks, they transformed simple drawings and metal sheets into the final masterpiece. Their meticulous adherence to the specified dimensions, shape, and weld quality is a reflection of our commitment to meeting all customer requirements.

Handling and transporting oversized products, such as our record-breaking lamella, present significant challenges. However, our workshop is equipped with two crane tracks, facilitating smooth movement and rotation of parts. One of these cranes is capable of lifting up to seven tons—a crucial asset that ensures we can handle and transport such massive structures with ease.

Since oversized items cannot be covered with tarps, we take extra precautions by thoroughly wrapping and foiling them to ensure protection during transport. These extraordinarily welded products often embark on long journeys to serve our international customers.

LIKO-S industry welcomes new CEO Miroslav Šenkýř

This spring marked a pivotal change in leadership at LIKO-S Industry as Miroslav Šenkýř stepped in as the new CEO. What are his plans and what fuels his consistently positive attitude? Read our interview to find out.

How are you adapting to your new role as CEO of LIKO-S Industry?

Thanks to my 18 years of management experience, adapting to the role of CEO has been quite natural for me. I joined LIKO-S as a production manager, and over time, I was offered the opportunity to take on the CEO role to our mutual satisfaction. I‘m very grateful for this opportunity.

What drew you to LIKO-S, and what aspects of the company do you find most impressive?

Throughout my career, I‘ve worked for various international corporations, but never for a Czech family-owned company. The organizational structure here was a significant draw. I appreciate the direct communication with the Musil family and the fact that I can influence many things. It gives me more room to implement my ideas and make improvements. Additionally, I wanted to work for a stable company, and LIKO-S meets this criterion, impressing me with its ability to produce interesting and technically demanding products.

What are your current plans and goals in this new position?

One of my main goals is to advance our production technology. By reducing production costs, I plan to enhance the quality and competitiveness of our products. This will be achieved primarily through more intelligent purchasing and efficient production processes. A long-term goal is to expand our product portfolio, freeing us from being solely a subcontractor of custom weldments.

So, are major changes coming to LIKO-S with you at the helm?

I wouldn‘t say that. I don‘t plan any significant radical steps. I prefer to focus on minor, meaningful improvements that collectively drive us toward larger goals. Ensuring the company‘s continued growth and stability is my primary task.

Could you describe a typical day in your role?

My day is primarily filled with meetings, during which I aim to inspire and motivate our team to further growth. In this way, I set the company‘s direction. Of course, I also perform routine operational tasks.

You‘re known for your positive outlook at work. How do you maintain this attitude?

Thank you. I try to stay positive as often as possible. Of course, we all have bad days now and then. But it‘s true that out of twenty working days, I‘m positive on about seventeen. I see every problem and obstacle as an opportunity for improvement and a chance to move things forward. Additionally, I support my positive thinking with sports, which helps me maintain a clear mind.

We continue to push boundaries, combining expertise, precision, and innovation to deliver exceptional solutions...

3D Measuring

Using the LEICA AT500, we ensure that our products meet exceptional precision standards. This way a specialized software can analyze the data to verify alignment and create a report on deviations. The final report is sent to customers for approval before shipping, guaranteeing product satisfaction.

We use the most modern methods to control the quality of our products.

Going round and round

Our LIKO-S Industry welding team wrapped up the production of three gigantic mixers for the food industry. You might not expect that a welded assembly of such colossal dimensions, surpassing the size of a truck, requires millimeter precision.

As with the start of almost every project in our metalworking division, it began with just a few pieces of sheet metal. Over approximately two months, our technicians, preparators, and welders transformed these into a genuinely monumental product.

From the photos, it‘s not immediately apparent that these are meat-processing mixers. Such projects are not unusual for us; we have been specializing in producing stainless steel assemblies for the food industry at LIKO-S for several years. This time around, three similar mixer units, each about six meters in length, were assembled in our workshop.

The client had high standards for the shaft‘s alignment and the overall quality of the artistry, presenting not only a challenge but also an opportunity to showcase our capabilities. Every millimeter and perfect alignment mattered as any deviation would render the machine non-functional.

The outcome has reaffirmed our belief in our corporate philosophy that „We believe in the importance of detail.“ This completed project is a clear example of how our metalworking division keeps pace with customer expectations and often exceeds them through continuous education, innovation, and process improvement.

Turning waste into design...

In our pursuit of sustainability, we’ve partnered with the REBORN DESIGN project. Students from Czech universities and the Erasmus program are tasked with creating sustainable designs using at least 95% recycled materials. The designs are judged on their looks, market potential, and feasibility.

Nearly a hundred students joined this challenge and participated in two workshops in Slavkov. This initiative shows our dedication to sustainability and highlights the potential of waste to be transformed into valuable products.
