Reil’s Art Gallery App Liliana Davie

Project overview The product: Reil’s Art Gallery is a local gallery in Texas. Reil’s Art Gallery wants its supporters and newcomers to be able to look at local art exhibitions and connect with local artists and support their artwork through the app.

Project duration: June 2022 to July 2022

User research: summary

I conducted interviews and created empathy maps to understand the users I’m designing for and their needs. A primary user group identified through research was young adults who have busy schedules, but like to support local art businesses.

Connecting

Platforms do not have options for users that can not make events in person.

Many users can not make time in their schedules to support a local artist at a specific time.

When users find artwork online, it is difficult to pinpoint who the exact artist is. Having to click through many links to find who the artist is.

Persona: Sasha Problem statement: Sasha is a Barista/Interior designer who needs to have new local artwork to look at on the go because she always on the look for her inspiration for her designs.

User journey map Mapping Sasha’s user journey revealed that it would help incorporate the artist's website.

Persona: Cesar Problem statement: Cesar is a Professional Photographer who needs a in-person art gallery experience virtually because he’s always on a tight schedule with gigs/events he has to get to.

Starting the design

Paper wireframes

Digital wireframes

Usability studies

Paper wireframes When working on the iteration of the homepage. I wanted to ensure that any user was able to follow where they need to go easily. All the important information is on the landing page and the artist featured for that month was the main focus as well as taking into account the pain points.

Digital wireframes As the initial design phase continued, I wanted to ensure the main points are added to the homescreen.

Live streaming and the artist place allow the users to get to the main focus of the app immediately.

Feature Artist of the month always is at the top of the screen to allow the user to connect and explore their artwork.

The user is able to get to their profile quickly.

Digital wireframes Even though majority of the navigation was in the home screen. I want to add tabs that helped users get to the other areas of the app easily.

Navigation screen that is reader friendly.

Low-fidelity prototype With the digital wireframes, I created a low-fidelity prototype. The primary user flow I connected was creating an experience for the user to watch live streams, look at artwork/ connect with the artist, and purchase art. So the prototype could be used in a usability study.

Usability study: findings Findings from the first study helped guide the designs from wireframes to mockups. The second study used a high-fidelity prototype and revealed what aspects of the mockups needed refining. Round 1 findings

Round 2 findings

1

Users want more focus on the artwork rather than live streaming.

1

Users wanted more of an emphasis on the featured artist.

2

Users want more interactive text and icons.

2

Users want to see the other featured artist from the past.

3 Users are looking for more options when purchasing art prints.

3 Wanted to have an option to check out immediately.

Refining the design

Accessibility

Mockups The early design was very compressed with the featured artist added to the page. I wanted to encourage the actual artist page. Adding an interactive link instead, to the artist's website that would make it more accessible to the user and add more white space on the screen that is less harsh on the eyes.

Before usability study

After usability study

Mockups In the first round of the usability study users wanted a more personalized touch for their profile. To keep a more accessible approach users are able to edit their profiles quickly, look at past purchases and likes, and incorporating a description right in the center for others to read.

High-fidelity Prototype The final high-fidelity prototype addresses user pain points of incorporating more icons, emphasizing the monthly featured artist, quicker checkout process, access to the user profile, and more artwork prints. View the Reil's Art Gallery App

Used icons to help make navigation easier.

User flow is straightforward allow a seamless checkout experience.

The use of the pull out table for users to get to other parts of the app if they are unable to locate them on the homescreen.

Continue to work on the layout to ensure user accessibility.

Have more usability studies to see if the pain points users experienced have been addressed.
