DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT

The objecAve of the projects is to transform one Cerda Block of Barcelona into a Self Sufficient Block. The main concepts for developing the block were to free the ground level for extra public spaces like plazas, green areas in order to connect and give back interacAve spaces to the city. Organizing the different programs according to beRer locaAon for those acAviAes and also connecAng them. The metabolic structure will serve to harvest water to produce energy, clean grey water for farming and public green areas, waste management, geothermal system, and solar photovoltaic panels on south side of the block where it can take advantage of the most of radiaAon. FRACTAL ANALYSIS

Ecology Economy-Economy Can we make a building and sell / use it at a profit?

Economy

The cost of the construcAon of the buildings appear to be expensive considering the technology implemented in it. Considering they have skins that respond to the environment, opening and closing for heaAng, cooling, or shading, these buildings have costs too high because it is not mass producAon, it uses inovaAve design strategies. The goal would be to have compeAAve costs in order to be profitable and easily sold. Also, if the cost to use the building is too high, it does not make sense for its construcAon.

Assuming we use recycled materials and local resources for construcAon, employers involved in the construcAon process earn a decent wage, since we do not have external costs.

We are being efficient in the use of resources considering we are taking the most advantage of solar income for energy, managing waste to transform it into biomass energy and food, and recycling grey water. All resources are used more than once.

Employees and occupants of the block would treat each other with respect because there are a lot of green spaces, cultural areas for interacAon, but there are also private environments for the individuality. Due to the diversity of uses, offices have close by areas of schools for the children of working women, as an example.

Occupants of the block would be considered safe depending on the structure to be solved and the materials used in the buildings. Considering the structures are of steel, it requires the use of some anA corrosive, therefore not all parts of the building process are safe for the health of the employees.

The buildings follow nature’s law in different aspects. All projects take advantage of waste as a source for energy, including in all 3 stages uAlizing waste management in the construcAon, use and demoliAon. They also implement the use of solar panels, diversity of technology for energy absorpAon and generaAon (wind, geothermal, solar), and diversity of uses, implemenAng all the services lacking in the block.

The main focus of a self sufficient project is to have effecAve use of all resources. In our projects we focus on the reuse of waste, use energy sun in the facades that obtain most sun hours of the day, water capture for geothermal energy and cooling spaces.

Use current solar income Celebrate diversity Waste = food Recycle biological nutrients & water Increase generaAon of biomass, soil & clean water Comfortable climate for occupants Enhance producAvity, reduce water fee by recycling water, PV for energy producAon, save energy costs by natural lighAng. Make areas for children, accessible meeAng areas, access to outdoor & fresh air. Diverse funcAons: Kindergarden, gym, restaurant, library, rest areas. Use recycled material and local resources, so there are no external costs. Clean/purify air. Use photo catalysis in roofs. Green facades to purify grey water. Regulate humidity through the use of lime in the wall paints.

BUILDING DECONSTRUCTION

Do you know which are the materials that you will use to build up your community?

EXPLAINING AND DEFINING STRATEGIES FOR DISMATELING THE BUILDINGS The building and its components has an average life of 50 years and some of them last even less, like the coaAng or the mechanical and electrical system. The important component that we have to highlight in this type of building with high occupaAon density is its structure. So therefore the essenAal step is the choice of the structural system, this choice is going to be determined by factors such as: material recyclability, in the case of this project we are using a metal as main resource for the structure.

LEED SUSTAINABLE SITES Erosion and sedimentation plan The idea is to create the landscape since the beginning of the Project in order to decrease the loss of soil Site Selection The site is located in the 22@ district on the Poble Nou area in Barcelona City.

Development Density and community connectivity The connecAvity between the site and residenAal area is very good because actually the site is located into a residenAal area (Poble Nou). The pedestrian access is very useful among the enAre site and you can get into the site by walking.

Brownfield redevelopment Site restoraAon through a project: This project its all about the restoraAon of the exisAng block and also to implement new spaces that bring something new to the city. Alternative Transportation There are two metro staAons located very near the site also a bicing staAon a few meters away.

There are some bus staAons near the site and also there are some metro staAons as Bogatell .

Site Development The use of green roofs is fundamental in the project and also the use of naAve species vegetaAon. Stormwater Design The use of a lot of vegetaAon allows the water to be infiltrated into the soil, as well as the green roofs. Minimization of heat effect The project itself serve as a shadow device for the exisAng buildings but at the same Ame allowing some light to pass through in order to not take out the natural light inside the buildings.

Living machine | Wastewater Treatment The project will collect rainwater in order to clean and reuse in the services of the building and also for irrigate water for the green spaces and farming producAon. We will use the living machine system that passes through several acuaAc ecosystems like wetland plants, bacteria, algae, protozoa, zoa, snails, clams, fish that purify water. Is one of the systems that can purify the most contaminated water and solid waste.
