Class activities Week 6- workshop- beam Aim: To learn and understand the Activity: 1. Group of 3 or 4 students will design and construct a structure (in this case, a beam) that must span 10000mm, the maximum height is 1000mm 2. each group will place completed beam in the testing cradle. 3. Increasing amounts of load will be applied to the beam until the beam fails 4. record the maximum load and deflection the structure can withstand before it experiences failure.
Material used: i. 2 of 1200 X 35 X 35 mm pinewood 1200 90

ii. 2 of 1200 X 3.2 X 90 mm plywood 1200

plywood
plywood: • strong at flat but weak in compression, it would bulk at the bottom • thiner, flat loads
compression
plywood bulk
Beam required:
1 meter 25cm beam

fixing:

flat head bright: use in softwoods, large head reduces pull through, commonly used for fencing, crates and pine framing. Bullet head bright: internal use, generally used in hardwoods, small head easily punched below timber surface, framing architraves and skirting. Nail: flat head: easier to connect between thiner woods.
Equipments: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
ruler steel square: measure the right angle, 90 degree electric screwdriver bevel single handle bucksaw: use as push, point figure to handle, keep straight eastern: act as pull backwards 6. hammer
procedures: 1. As we planed, the pinewoods were easier to bulk in compression, therefore we decided to construct 2 woods vertically as sides, and plywood in the middle as connections with two sides, shown below: ' plywood
plywood Pinewoods in two sides
Nailed both sides by flat head nail 30 X 2.8MM Because the flat nail will not easily go through pinewood and stable connected
Flat head nail 30 X 2.80MM
section cut- through: plywood Plywood columns
Back side cloumn
columns
we cut plywood into nine parts acts as columns, in order to make the beam stand vertically on the table

Plywood columns X 9 Limitation: because we did not start applied the column from the start
