Images that tell stories Still or moving images with sport as the common denominator. It makes for a fascinating theme because it contains all the ingredients needed to create a good image: aesthetic power, but also emotional impact. It associates the spectacular with a form of depth that comes from the stories and memories it generates. Comprising photographs, videos and installations, SportFoto will be on view at the Tripostal, the Gare Saint Sauveur, the Musée de l’Hospice Comtesse and throughout the city.

The event is bringing together the work of photographers who marked the first great moments in the history of sports photojournalism and its first icons alongside more contemporary authors, both specialists and non-specialists, who are interested in all its aspects of this theme, including its social dimension. Our wish is that each image and each video expresses both its aesthetic and documentary dimension, in a word that that the images speak, that they speak to you.

This event is made up of some twenty exhibitions that explore the great narrative of sport while also focusing on the smaller stories found within it. It aims to highlight the artistic dimension of the sporting image, but also the strength of its viewpoint and its ability to tap into our emotions, passion or nostalgia.

Tripostal FOOTBALL AND AUTEUR PHOTOGRAPHY The Tripostal presents the works of more than a dozen international artists through a series of photos and projections dedicated to football and the work of auteur photographers. None of the photographers presented here is a specialist in football photography but each has found the necessary subject matter to let his or her talent shine as the theme is extremely rich and allows for all styles to express themselves. They are portraitists and photojournalists or sometimes both, and all share a common desire to tell stories about football. From amateurs to LOSC (Lille’s professional team) and its supporters or those of Liverpool, while taking in the unique and intense discipline of Lelo, they seek to transcribe the emotions, infatuation and nostalgia this sport generates.

Tapping into this emotion and into the sporting performance itself, the ultimate ambition of the exhibition is to highlight the quality of a photographer’s viewpoint. The photographers presented at the Tripostal are also great auteurs who, for some, started their careers working on the theme of sport and, for others, have since made it their primary passion. Their work offers a unique point of view and an unsuspected freeze frame at the heart of the sporting achievement to reveal its aesthetic and universal character, which can be appreciated as much by connoisseurs of these disciplines as by neophytes.

ON TOP OF THE WORLD - AFP Relive on the big screen all the moments that marked the competition, including the exceptional goal scored by Benjamin Pavard, voted “best goal” of the competition, or our photographer Yuri Cortez getting buried under a pile of Croatian players celebrating a goal against England. Beyond the World Cup, it is the evolution of photography and the know-how of AFP (Agence France Presse) that are at the heart of this retrospective. The view cameras used at the first edition in Uruguay in 1930 have now given way to cutting-edge digital equipment. As early as 1998, AFP went digital and twenty years later, the adventure continues with a second triumph for Les Bleus. New areas reserved for photographers have been created in the stands, remote-controlled boxes are inserted behind the goals and access to the walkways that overlook the stadiums are hooked up to robots on the roofs. Lelo - cristina aldehuela & jordi perdigo Cristina Aldehuela, born in 1985 in Spain, lives and works in Ghana, and Jordi Perdigo, born in 1980 in Spain. Cristina Aldehuela and Jordi Perdigo are particularly interested in traditions, religions and how they impact our society. They usually work as a team on their personal projects. In 2015, they documented a mysterious sport called Lelo, which is played only once a year between two villages in southwest Georgia. A cousin of Soule, the medieval sport, Lelo perfectly expresses the soul of the Georgian people: rough, fiery, generous with its own spirituality. Two villages in the southwest of the country face off once a year on Easter Sunday. There is no time limit or rules, and as many players as there are people. The goal of the game for each team is to bring a ball to their village stream. Any means are allowed. The winner can then place the ball as an offering on the grave of someone recently deceased. Nobody knows exactly where this tradition originated from. The ball is made the same day out of a leather sack filled with sand, water and wine. It weighs 16 kilos... A powerful story, in which the two photographers’ style, rooted in the permanent search for an aesthetic, is also careful to never deviate from the subject.

Scousers - ken grant Ken Grant, born in Liverpool (UK) in 1967, lives and works in the UK. Since the 1980s, Ken Grant has been photographing his contemporaries in Liverpool, his hometown, and telling the story of football without ever entering either of the city’s two big stadiums: Anfield, where the Reds of Liverpool FC play, and Goodison Park, where the Everton Blues play. He photographs this sport and its relationship with the city. With football as his guiding theme, he bears witness to social life. His heroes are the working class, the Scousers, the people of Liverpool.

LOSC In partnership with Lille Olympic Sporting Club (LOSC), three series will be presented: LOSC, The Golden Years, 1946 - 1954 From its second season, LOSC was crowned champion, ushering in a period of ten golden years when it was placed among the greats of French football. During this decade, the team was twice champion, in 1946 and 1954, and vice-champion four times in a row, from 1948 to 1951, indicating a true constancy. LOSC, The Great Year, 2011 A golden generation reaching its peak clearly dominated the championship, winning it with an eightpoint difference over its closest rival, Olympique de Marseille. LOSC did the double by also winning the Coupe de France, beating Paris Saint Germain in the final. The exhibition has been constructed with the help of numerous photographers from two entities. On the one hand, the photographers of the Voix du Nord and on the other, the photographers of the Panoramic press agency LOSC, The Adventure Continues, 2018 League 1 football matches, eagerly anticipated by the people of Lille, resumed on 10 August. LOSC played its first game the very next day, winning it hands down, a bright start. To accompany the team during this early stage of the season, the best shots of LOSC will be displayed after each game they play, within a constantly evolving projection.

The photographers of La Voix du Nord and the Panoramic news agency are providing their photographs for the series, LOSC, The Golden Years and LOSC, The Adventure Continues. 8

Eisern Union - Harald hauswald Harald Hauswald, born in 1954 in Radebeul, East Germany. FC Union, one of Berlin’s football clubs, is a gathering point for “Ostalgics”, people nostalgic for the GDR (German Democratic Republic). Tainted at the end of the 80s by a fringe of its ultras who had converted to hooliganism, today the club is the refuge for those who, while still rejecting the East German regime, miss this time when people looked out for each other more and money counted less. In recounting twenty-five years in the history of this club like no other, the author Harald Hauswald also tells us about the history of Germany. He was born in 1954 in Dresden and from the start of his career sought out subjects that contradicted the official East German ideology. His work, considered as a visual chronicle of the true GDR and the aftermath of reunification, has now earned him renown. His methodology hasn’t changed. He remains a street photographer who spends his days walking through Berlin and capturing what others do not see.

WORLD CUP - STÉPHANE MEUNIER Stéphane Meunier is a documentary filmmaker who started his career as a reporter on M6, a French television channel for which he covered the war in Lebanon, the workers’ strikes in Poland and the Iran-Iraq war before moving to the Capa agency and travelling the world to produce documentary subjects. “Filming and photographing made me want to film and photograph”, he says. In 1998, he was accepted into the heart of the French football team with his video camera, staying with the players throughout their epic world cup campaign. Who else could have followed a disconsolate Zidane into the empty dressing room after he had been sent off during the game against Saudi Arabia? During this shoot he also photographed the team’s private moments. Initially the plan was not to take photographs but use his camera as a way of taking notes. The documentary achieved cult status but the photographs, after being published in a book with a short print run, were forgotten. Twenty years later, they have been dusted off and bear witness, without any censorship, to a human adventure that has remained engraved in the collective memory. It was France’s first world cup victory and as L’Equipe’s headline put it the day after the match, it is for eternity.

tribute to Bob Martin Bob Martin, né en 1959 à Londres, vit et travaille en Angleterre. “For me, photography started out as a hobby, mainly because I loved going into the darkroom and developing and printing film. That experience taught me a lot about how to take good pictures and a lot about composition as well. After a while, I started to appreciate photography as a skill and as a means of expression”, he recalls. Bob Martin specialised in sports from the start of his career, out of affinity and passion but also because he considers it to be a wonderful theme for photography. Over the past thirty years, he has photographed the great sporting events: the Summer and Winter Olympic Games, the Football World Cup and Grand Slam tennis tournaments. Published by the biggest magazines and the recipient of numerous awards, he is a legend, a photographer who inspired the new wave of sports photography. His technique, his expert framing and his ability to patiently wait to capture the right moment are impressive. As things unfold at an incredible speed before his eyes, Bob Martin composes. GRASSROOTS - SERGEY NOVIKOV Sergey Novikov, born in Cheboksary (Russia) in 1979, lives and works in Moscow. In this series of photographs entitled Grassroots, Sergey Novikov focuses on amateur football stadiums, places that had no chance of hosting matches for the last World Cup, while highlighting the mimetism that exists between two worlds: the world of amateur footballers and that of professionals. Through the gaze he brings to bear on small village stadiums and the urban infrastructure surrounding them, he shows a Russia that seems to belong to another era, as if time had stood still there.

IcOns - gérard RANCINAN Gérard Rancinan, born in 1953 in Talence (France). From his beginnings in the laboratory of the daily Sud Ouest, Gérard Rancinan has espoused rigour and cultivated the conviction that every photographic gesture is important, that nothing is insignificant and that every shot, every print requires total commitment. His portraits of personalities and in particular those of the greatest champions have toured the world. The world of sport and specifically the personalities it contains have been one of his favourite subjects. Between the early 1990s and 2008, he immortalised the greatest champions, in his style, which is sometimes based on sophisticated scenarios but retains the objective of getting as close as possible to the truth. MARADONA, GOLDEN BOY JEAN-CHRISTOPHE ROSE AND BENOÎT HEIMERMANN Jean-Christophe Rosé, born in 1948 in Geneva. From the 1980s onwards, he made numerous documentaries based on archives and worked with Benoît Heimermann, a French sports journalist, writer and publisher born in 1953 in Delle, near Belfort. In 2006, Arte asked them to make a film, shortly before the start of the World Cup, on a global football figure. Quite naturally, they decided to focus on the best player of the century, Diego Maradona, who, twenty years earlier scored the greatest goal in football history. Jean-Christophe Rosé went digging for archive images, Benoît Heimermann wrote the texts. Their film was nominated at the European Film Awards the same year. Entitled Maradona, un gamin en or (Maradona, Golden Boy), looks back on the spectacular and moving life of this child, nicknamed El pibe de oro (the golden boy), and his extraordinary career filled with pitfalls and victories.

AT THE HEART OF SPORT, PORTRAITS OF A PASSION Gérard Uféras Gérard Uféras, born in Paris in 1954, lives and works in Paris. Gérard Uféras, photographer and founding member of the Vu agency with Christian Caujolle, is driven by his passion and sensitive to other people’s. He particularly enjoys working in the worlds of art, fashion and sport. Their common point is that they attract committed people who are totally invested in their practice or their art. Just like him. Au cœur du sport, Portraits d’une passion (At the Heart of Sport, Portraits of a Passion) is a series of 19 portraits, 16 of which will be on display here, of amateurs, professionals but also celebrities who share an authentic passion for sport. This project was started in 2014 and has constantly grown ever since. It is presented in the form of photographic slideshows accompanied by voiceovers. From the renowned French cook Thierry Marx to the 8-year-old Jules, each narrator tells us, with his or her words and sensibility, what sport means to them.

GARE SAINT SAUVEUR CYCLING AND OLYMPIC GAMES

The Gare Saint Sauveur is hosting a dozen exhibitions dedicated to cycling and the Olympics. In both cases, pride of place is being given to worldfamous events – the Olympic Games, the Tour de France or Paris-Roubaix – grandiose events whose greatness is evident to even the those who profess no interest in sports. The featured photographers place us in the presence of the heroes, legends and icons of sport. On the cycling side, the challenge is to have visitors experience or re-experience the region’s emblematic race, the Paris-Roubaix classic, known as “The Hell of the North” since 1968 because of the countless cobblestones that line it. We are invited to discover these conditions and the sporting icons who have marked the race, such as Johan Museeuw, the former Belgian rider known as the “Lion of Flanders”, as well as the fans and onlookers who came to attend the event. Continuing on the theme of classic cycling races, the Tour de France receives particular attention, first through photographs documenting Tour de France icon Eddy Merckx’s performances during the summer of 1969, the year of his first victory,

and secondly through a look back on the 2018 tour through a previously unpublished series of photographs. On the Olympic Games side, an exhibition featuring the collections of the Lausanne Olympic Museum will enable visitors to relive the summer and winter editions of the Games since Los Angeles 1984, with a focus on Rio 2016 and Paris 1924, bringing us up close with the sportsmen and women and the highlights of each edition. The exhibition seeks to capture the athletes in the crucial moments of their individual disciplines but also the sports event as a whole in order to relate the scale of these competitions. A variety of disciplines are honoured as well as the aesthetics and heroes of these sports, some of which are well-known and others lesser known to the general public. The sporting highlights presented here are an opportunity to celebrate the photographers whose work forms the basis of the history of sport, regionally and internationally, but also to acknowledge the public alongside professional and amateur sportsmen and women.

Saâdane afif Saâdane Afif, born in Vendôme in 1970, lives and works in Berlin. With L’André, the artist Saâdane Afif revisits the aesthetics of André Cadere’s Round Bars of Wood and uses the codes set up by this 1970s Polish artist who was an illustrious representative of minimal and conceptual art. From an aesthetic point of view, he makes an identical copy of Cadere’s coloured stick held in the Lambert collection.

THE OLYMPIC GAMES - DAVID BURNETT David Burnett, born in Salt Lake City (USA) in 1946, lives and works in Washington (USA). Since the London Olympics in 2012, David Burnett, whose talent is recognised worldwide, has been a member of the International Olympic Committee’s group of partner photographers and in this capacity now covers all summer and winter editions. The photographs taken during the Summer Olympics in London (2012) and Rio (2016) and the Winter Olympics in Sochi (2014) and PyeongChang (2018) are presented here.

EDDY MERCKX’S 1969 TOUR DE FRANCE - JEF GEYS Jef Geys, was born in 1934 in Leopoldsburg (Belgium) and worked in Balen all his life. He died in 2018 in Genk. During the summer of 1969, the Belgian artist Jef Geys decided to follow the Tour de France. A cycling enthusiast, like so many of his compatriots Geys photographed the stages of what was to be Eddy Merckx’s first victory, resulting in a collection of images that mix sociology, geography and art, focusing as much on fans and onlookers as competitors.

Vélolavie - Xavier Lambours Xavier Lambours, was born in Suresnes in 1955 and currently lives and works in Maisons-Alfort. In 1983, as a young upcoming photographer, he met Jacques Bonnaffé at the Venice Festival. The young actor was presenting Jean-Luc Godard’s First Name Carmen and Xavier Lambours, on an assignment for the Cahiers du Cinéma, was there to take his photograph. It marked the beginning of a life-long friendship. It was Jacques Bonnaffé, mad about cycling and his region, who years later embarked Xavier Lambours on the Vélolavie project, a book of photographs accompanied by texts written by the actor. Xavier got so enthusiastic for this subject he worked on it for four years, covering everything from professional races, such as Paris-Roubaix and the Four Days of Dunkirk, to small Sunday morning events. Jacques Bonaffé finally told him to stop and publish the book. Otherwise, carried away by his passion, he would probably still be working on it.

Paris-Roubaix In partnership with the La Voix du Nord newspaper, press photos of the mythical Paris-Roubaix cycling race testify to its singular history in the sporting landscape of the region but also that of the country. Tour de france 2018 The Tour de France 2018 exhibition was designed on the basis of selecting one image per stage, one photograph per day, with a strong aesthetic bias. In fact, the aim is not to propose a factual history of the event, but a viewpoint, or rather viewpoints. Those of Tim de Waele, the two American photographers Jered and Ashley Gruber, and Kevin Bottin.

omega - photofinish It was at the London Olympic Games in 1948 that Omega, the official timekeeper of the Games since 1932 in Los Angeles, introduced a decisive innovation in the history of sports timekeeping. The first photo finish camera, called a “Magic Eye”, was commissioned for that event. It enabled the judges to see the exact position of the athletes when they crossed the finish line. In addition to this function, the photo finish – which has constantly improved ever since with technology develops a unique aesthetic due to its graphics. It can be very spectacular when the race is tight but also when it is significantly dominated by one athlete. This exhibition is presented with the support of the watchmaking firm Omega, which today still is the official timekeeper of the Olympic Games.

BEFORE BEING PRESENTED AT THE GARE SAINT SAUVEUR FROM 6 SEPTEMBER TO 4 NOVEMBER, THE PHOTOFINISH INSTALLATION WAS SHOWN DURING THE “NIGHT OF THE YEAR” EVENT ON SATURDAY 7 JULY AS PART OF THE RENCONTRES D’ARLES.

PARIS 1924 These Olympic Games marked history due to several “firsts”. It was the first time the athletes were housed in an Olympic village and the first time the Games were broadcast on radio. With 625,000 spectators and more than 1,000 accredited journalists, they ushered in a new era. The history of the Olympics was in motion. A hundred years later, they are being held again in Paris.

BEST OF RIO The Rio Olympic Games took place from 5 to 21 August 2016. 11,000 athletes representing 206 delegations competed in 28 sports. For each edition, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) commissions a report from several renowned photographers to enrich its photographic heritage. BOxeurs - laurent gudin Laurent Gudin, born in 1962, has been documenting top athletic competitions for over ten years: drivers, cyclists, boxers, wrestlers and runners. In the series Après l’effort [After the effort], he presents portraits of athletes captured in the heat of the moment, at the end of a race, a fight or performance. Laurent Gudin’s career was built through a series of lucky encounters. First with Jean-Pierre Gilson, a master of black and white photography, who introduced him, at the age of sixteen, to the secrets of photo development, then with Neville Brody, the internationally known designer of the modern press. He developed a fascination for Africa during a trip to the Senegalese desert with Alexandra Boulat and since then has continued to regularly visit and work in Senegal. Boxing also holds a major place in his work. His photographs are characterized by simplicity and rigour, and he crafts every stage in creating them: shooting, development and even layout when it comes to his own books.

Mohamed Ali the GOAT (Greatest Of All Time) Sports Illustrated is one of the most prestigious magazines in the history of sport. This American weekly magazine has up to 12 million subscribers. Known for the high-quality writing of its international correspondents, it has also always stood out for its photography. Some very great photographers enjoyed careers at Sports Illustrated. This title naturally closely documented the career of Mohamed Ali, an exceptional boxer. In this exhibition, ten mythical photos, taken by the greatest stars on the staff of the famous American magazine, revisit The GOAT (Greatest of all time).

FEATHERWEIGHT - SAMUEL LEBON & ÉLODIE VALENTIN Elodie Valentin, born in 1978 in Grande-Synthe. She lives and works in Lille. She met Licia Boudersa when the latter was practically a champion already. She decided she wanted to tell her story and to do so teamed up with Samuel Lebon, a photographer born in 1979 in Croix and currently living in Roubaix. French boxing champion in the featherweight category in 2016 and European champion in 2017, Licia Boudersa is now training for the World Championship. She recounts her journey and her struggles: keeping true to herself through highs and lows, the galas, the challenges, the machismo, the complications of managing fame, pushing herself to new heights, referees, promoters and the boxing world... This sports instructor from the Bois-Blancs district in Lille fights first and foremost for who she is. A journey that smashes clichés and stigma while giving inertia a boot up the backside.

WHEN WE WERE KINGS - LEON GAST The documentary When We Were Kings was directed by Leon Gast – an American photographer and film director – in 1996 about “The Rumble in the Jungle”, a fight between Mohamed Ali and George Foreman for the title of world heavyweight boxing champion on 30 October 1974 in Kinshasa, Zaire (present-day Democratic Republic of the Congo). The film also shows viewers the cultural and political context in which the match took place – it was the first world boxing championship organised in Africa, at the initiative of Don King, a boxing promoter. We discover the atmosphere of the city, its concerts, Mobutu’s dictatorial regime and Mohamed Ali’s affection for the Zairian people. A look back on a legendary fight, probably the most emblematic bout in Mohamed Ali’s career, made famous largely thanks to this film, which won the Oscar for best documentary the following year in 1997. 27

Contemporary Heroes - denis rouvre Denis Rouvre, was born 4 June 1967 in Epinay-sur-Seine. He lives and works in Bagnolet (Seine-SaintDenis). He graduated from the Louis Lumière School in 1987 and has since specialised in magazine portraits. He has been published in numerous newspapers and was exhibited at the Arles photography festival in 2005. His work on tsunami survivors in Japan was published in The New York Times Magazine and earned him a third World Press Photo Award in 2012 for his Portraits isolés. He received a World Press Photo award in 2010 for his Lamb series and a second World Press Photo award in 2013 for his Sumo series.

PALAIS DES BEAUX-ARTS TRIBUTE TO BOB MARTIN Bob Martin, born in 1959 in London, leaves in the UK. « At the beggining, photography was just a hobby for me. I liked to go to the dark room to develop films, and pictures. This laboratory work teached me about photography, the composition of a picture and it is there that I learned that photography is a medium of expression », remembers Bob Martin. Bob Martin specialised since the beggining in the sport photography, by preference, by passion and because he considers this theme to be great for photography. During 30 years, he photographed all the biggest sport events : Olympic Games, World Cup... Published by the famous magazines, and having won many rewards, he is a legend.He also inspired the new generation of sport photographers. Its technic and its capacity to capture the right moment are impressive.

SPORTFOTO IN THE CITY IN LILLE, LOMME AND HELLEMMES NEIGHBOURHOODS: CHAMPIONS IN THE MAKING - PAUCE Pauce, born in 1969 in the Yvelines. A renowned portraitist in the field of sport, Pauce has produced a series of group photographs and individual portraits of young athletes from 18 clubs in Lille, Lomme and Hellemmes, having them pose with the attitude of great champions. Maybe the champions of tomorrow... Pauce photographed them one by one, in the exact position they occupy for the final group image. With his shooting and editing technique, the light and the children’s expressions infuse the final result with immense strength. The exhibition is composed of group images printed in very large formats and displayed in each of Lille’s neighbourhoods.

5 PANO CITY INSTALLATIONS THROUGHOUT LILLE DAY OF GLORY AT THE PIERRE MAUROY STADIUM BY THE PHOTOGRAPHERS OF THE FRENCH TENNIS FEDERATION This autumn we are celebrating the anniversary of the Davis Cup victory of “Noah’s gang”. it was one of the last chances for the new musketeers generation of Tsonga, Gasquet, Monfils and Simon, to win the competition. They did so with the decisive contribution of an up-and-coming player, Lucas Pouille, a local kid, and what’s more, they played both the semi-final against Serbia and then the final against Belgium at the Pierre Mauroy Stadium in Lille. The exhibition on the five Pano City installations takes a look back on this wonderful moment, displaying photos to remind us of the event and perhaps even inspire similar feats in the future. Still qualified, Noah’s gang is returning to Lille for the 2018 edition to play its semi-final against Nadal’s Spain. The authors, Antoine Couvercelle, Philippe Montigny and Jean Charles Caslot, work for the French Tennis Federation. In this capacity, they enjoyed exceptional access to all areas to experience the adventure alongside “Captain Noah’s” team.

THE SAINT-SO COURTYARD The Saint-Sauveur brownfield site is starting to come to life! The Saint-So courtyard is taking form. Since this summer, new uses have been taking hold, prefiguring and inspiring what will eventually be a large public space in the future district. In 2018, we are starting small and gradually building. A relaxation space, a barbecue, playing areas for petanque, a scooter track, and soon an undulating track for bikes, a lawn for barefoot sports, games and more. There’s a palpable holiday feeling to this space as it takes shape through the collective constructions being erected. So, whether it’s for a picnic, a fun afternoon or an end-of-the-day visit, welcome to this experimental urban destination!
