Young artists become explorers as they learn to create fearlessly while investigating a variety of media and creative processes. We present opportunities for students to develop critical thinking skills, enhance creativity, and build confidence. Students are encouraged to discover their own artistic interests while refining technical abilities. Our classes are kept small and taught by highly skilled teaching artists.

Smocks are available, but dress for mess! A caregiver participates with the child in these classes. In order to provide the best quality time with your toddler, kindly refrain from bringing non-registered children to class.

Lil’ Artist 10 Weeks Your child will squish clay, push paint, and pile materials of different colors and textures into unique collages and paintings that record their sensory journey. Make soft plushie friends, balanced clay mobiles, and paintings that will rival the best abstract art. These multimedia, sensory art classes are perfect for sparking your little one’s creativity.

Mixed Media Explorations 5 Weeks

In this skill-building class, your child will be introduced to new art materials, tools, and the work of a new artist each week. We will learn about the tools and techniques used to transform and control different materials such as clay, paint, paper, fabric, and other media. Your young artist will then apply their new skills to follow their imaginations in creating their own unique artwork.

Paint and Stories 5 Weeks Who doesn’t love a good book? Storytime starts each class and is used to frame our explorations in painting and sculpture. Your child will mix their own colors and create different textures of paint that will be applied to thematic artworks each week.

Art Explorers 5 Weeks

Be inspired by historical and current artists from around the world and our home town, Chicago. We will study a different artist each week and work with a variety of different mediums. Students will explore painting with watercolors and acrylics, discover printmaking tools to make posters and cards, create large and small sculptures of animals, make books and movies using plaster cloth, explore paper mache, and more.

Plushies 5 Weeks The world of stuffed animals comes alive in this bright and colorful, skill-building class! Kids learn how to imagine, design, and hand sew their very own plushies. In this fun intro to design and tactile creativity, your child will develop their fine motor skills while making small and large plushies using a variety of materials.

All Things Painting 5 Weeks Whether your child likes to paint or would like to learn how this is the class for them. Your young artist will learn how to use a variety of painting materials and practice fundamental techniques like composition and value. Bring in images that they have always wanted to paint! Photographs of pets, favorite places, family, or friends are welcome. We will also provide images to spark your child’s creativity.

All Things Clay 5 Weeks In this fun introduction to the possibilities of clay, students will learn a variety of techniques. We will explore color, shape, and texture to create sculptural and functional work. Your child will create plates, bowls, and cups, as well as clay masks, mythical creatures, super heroes, and more.

Drawing & Cartooning 5 Weeks Come explore the world of cartooning with us! Learn the process of writing and drawing a complete short story and find inspiration in popular culture and comics. Inspiration can be based on real-life experiences, dreams, or an idea that you have always wanted to put into words and images.

Handbuilding & Wheelthrowing 5 Weeks Learn the basic techniques needed to make unique sculptures and great pots by hand and on the pottery wheel. Coils, slabs, and pinch pots are simple hand techniques that you will explore to form clay by hand. On the wheel, you will learn to center, pull, and trim your pots. Glazing will also be covered throughout the class, allowing you to add color to your three-dimensional works of art.

Drawing into Painting 5 Weeks

Discover the proper skills to create successful drawings such as line, value, and composition as you explore a different painting medium each week. You will learn methods of application and pick the appropriate surfaces for working with acrylic paint, pastel, ink, watercolor, and tempera paint. You will develop new ways of expressing your thoughts, feelings, and creative ideas.

Advanced Drawing & Painting 5 Weeks

Strengthen your individual voice and take your art to the next level in this multi-disciplinary class! Using a variety of art-making materials, improve your technical skills with lessons focused on figure drawing, perspective, and composition. You will develop new ways of expressing your thoughts, feelings, and creative ideas!

Scientific Illustration 5 Weeks Examine insects, plants, and other natural life in this illustration class. A variety of drawing and illustration skills will be taught, including proportion, perspective, line, value, shading, and stippling. Your sketchbooks will be filled with everyday ideas and unique inspiration.

Wheelthrowing 5 Weeks Learn the basic skills needed to center clay and throw a pot while encouraging the expression of your personal ideas on the wheel. We will also explore glazing as we create our own collection of pottery. Students will make functional pieces such as vases, plates, bowls, and mugs.

Saturday 2-4pm Amelia Bell Session I: Starts April 4 Session II: Starts May 9 $140, Members $135

These workshops are a fun, enjoyable opportunity to work together on themed projects that bring laughter, smiles, and art into your life. All workshops are two hours long, and a paying adult must accompany children.

Block-Printed Tote Bags Learn the basics of textile surface design and take home a tote-ally awesome reusable bag! Together, kids and adults will carve out a printing clock using linocutting techniques. We’ll show you how to create an exciting pattern repeat and print your design onto a canvas tote bag with colorful fabric paints.

Unicorn & Dragon Mugs Learn about these legendary creatures and their place of origin and create a unique unicorn and dragon mug. Using clay, you will learn to handbuild your mug and decorate with scaly skin, teeth, majestic mane, rainbow horn, and more. At the end of the workshop, we will paint our creatures with colorful glazes.

Bumble Bee Bells Buzzzz into Spring with your very own handmade bumble bee bell. You will learn to roll a slab, make a pinch pot, and decorate your bell by creating textures and attaching details. We’ll make big and small bees, bees of all colors like pink, blue and yellow to ring in Spring.

#1 Dad Mugs Father’s Day is right around the corner. Your dad deserves a special mug made by you! Learn how to roll slabs, decorate the surfaces with patterns, textures, and paint with glazes to create a unique mug for your favorite guy.

Garden Gnomes Decorate your garden and home with a hand built mythological spirit, the gnome. We will go over how to make coils and pinch pots and create textures to give our gnomes a fun outfit and hat. Once we’ve finished handbuilding our gnomes, we will glaze them to make them stand out for friends, families, and neighbors to admire.

Register Early! Classes Fill Quickly. We strongly encourage you to preregister to ensure a space in class. Registration is accepted on a firstcome, first-served basis with a 50% deposit required. Workshops must be paid in full at time of registration. Balance is due on the first day of class. Lillstreet accepts payments by Visa, Master Card, American Express or Discover. Checks should be made payable to Lillstreet Art Center.

Holidays & Missed Classes: For classes that fall on holidays, it is up to individual teachers and students to decide whether to hold the class or to schedule a make up class later in the session. Missed classes may only be made up within the same class session.

Class Age Restrictions: All classes are for ages 16 years and older unless otherwise noted.

Tools & Materials: Students may be required to purchase a tool kit from lillstreet, or other materials in order to complete class work. Unless otherwise specified, materials will be provided for the first class session and students will receive a supply list for purchase.

Private Lessons

Would you prefer individualized instruction over a classroom situation? Is there a specific technique you’ve always wanted to learn but don’t have the time to commit to a 10 week class? If this is what you’ve been looking for we have some options for you to choose from. • A two-hour minimum commitment is required. • Your customized lesson can be for one person, two or three. • No previous experience necessary. • Private classes can be set up in any of our departments. • Your lesson includes open studio time on the day of your lesson only; it does not include open studio for the week.

Pricing structure: $75 per hour for one-on-one instruction $60 per hour, per student for two $50 per hour, per student for three

Cancellations & Refunds (Please Read Carefully)

Cancellations: Classes are canceled when enrollment minimums are not reached. Students will be notified if classes are canceled and will be eligible for a full refund or class credit. Tuition credits are good indefinitely toward any classes, workshops or gallery items and are not redeemable for cash under any circumstances.

Refund Policy For Dropped Classes And Workshops: Tuition is refundable for all classes and workshops dropped more than one week prior to the session start date, minus a $40 processing fee. Classes dropped during the week prior to the start of the class session are eligible for a studio credit only (no refunds). Classes dropped during the first week of the session are eligible for a 50% studio credit (no refund). Classes dropped after the first week of the session are not eligible for a credit or refund except in cases of medical emergency. Students are responsible for notifying the lillstreet staff that they wish to drop a class or workshop. Not attending class does not constitute an official withdrawal or cancellation of tuition or fees. Visiting artist workshops and summer camps have separate cancellation policies.
