Printmaking & Book Arts
Explore printmaking and handmade books in our fully-equipped studio. Letterpress and bookbinding complement techniques such as etching, relief and screen printing. Get creative with traditional, contemporary and experimental approaches to printmaking. With generous open studio time and non-toxic inks and solvents, printmaking has something for all skill levels. Additional materials and paper are available for sale from instructors and monitors. Open studio is included with tuition.
First-Time Artist
First-Time Screen Printing on Paper 4 or 5 Weeks Craft colorful prints of your own designs to hang on your walls or turn into handmade notecards. We’ll learn the photo-emulsion process, so you can print from your own drawings or digital files. Material fee includes ink, newsprint and some paper.

First-Time Letterpress 5 Weeks Explore both classic letterpress techniques and contemporary practices on different types of presses. This technique uses movable type to create an impression on the paper when printed. Projects are designed to showcase type, color and the printed form. The material fee includes ink, newsprint and a sampling of specialty paper.
First-Time Etching 5 Weeks Explore contemporary and traditional methods of intaglio printmaking including line etching, aquatint and drypoint on copper plates to create an edition. Utilize etching’s distinctive qualities to produce multiples, creating beautiful handmade prints in single or multiple colors. All levels welcome
22 SPRING CLASSES BEGIN THE WEEKS OF MARCH 30 AND MAY 4 First-Time Bookmaking 4 or 5 Weeks Learn the basic skills, tools and vocabulary of bookbinding and book arts. You will create simple folded books, pamphlets, Japanese stab bindings, accordion and Coptic books.
Beginner / Advanced Beginner
Bookbinding II 5 Weeks Using stitches learned in FirstTime Bookmaking, expand your knowledge to include more complex binding patterns. We will explore compound books, flag books and long stitch with its variants. Material fee includes all necessary materials, but students may bring additional decorative papers to further personalize their books. Expect to finish 3-4 books. Prerequisite: First-Time Bookmaking or equivalent experience.
Acrylic Resist Etching 5 Weeks
Explore the latest discoveries in how to make hard ground, soft ground and drypoint intaglio prints without using any of the toxic materials associated with traditional etching. All resists, inks and cleaning agents are completely non-toxic. You can make beautiful intaglio prints and simultaneously help to save the planet. All levels welcome
Letterpress II 5 Weeks Explore classic letterpress techniques and contemporary practices including setting type on angle, curves and circles. Projects will showcase handset type, color and the printed form, including monotype and pressure printing of color fields. Explore more in-depth, complex and larger-scale works. Material fee includes some paper and most printing supplies. Additional paper may be purchased in class. Prerequisite: First-Time Letterpress or instructor approval.
Introduction to Relief Printmaking 4 Weeks Learn to make relief prints by carving and inking linoleum blocks. This class includes detailed instruction on tools, techniques, and the translation of ideas. We will explore single and multiple block approaches, collage techniques, and have the opportunity to incorporate monoprint techniques for even greater creativity. Works can be printed with the press or by hand. Some materials are included, additional supplies may be purchased from instructor.

Reduction Linocut 5 Weeks Create a print in multiple colors from just one block of linoleum. This technique, invented by Picasso, involves successively cutting away pieces of the block after printing each color, resulting in vibrant, multicolored prints. All levels welcome
Word and Image: Relief and Letterpress 10 Weeks Carve linoleum blocks into relief prints and combine them with handset type to create unique abstract or narrative prints. You will discover vintage printing blocks, monoprint processes, pressure prints, and stencils. You will also explore various tools, different presses for adding text, and cutting techniques. Some materials are included, and additional paper and linoleum can be purchased in class. All levels welcome.

Multilevel Screen Printing on Paper 10 Weeks This class is for those who have screen printed before, or those interested in refining their skills. You will learn new tricks such as color fades and watercolor monoprinting while focusing on projects such as poster runs, handmade cards and fine art editions. All inks and some paper included in material fee. All levels welcome
Beginner/Advanced Beginner Etching 10 Weeks Design and create a multi-color etching. You will explore traditional intaglio methods using line etch, soft ground, and aquatint techniques. We will also use multiple plates to create an edition of prints or a suite of unique monoprints with interesting color layering and compositional effects. This class is perfect for beginners and builds on the skills learned in first-time etching.
Print on Clay 10 Weeks Learn to silkscreen, toner-litho transfer, monoprint, and stencil on clay forms. You’ll create layered imagery for narrative or decorative purposes. Demonstrations will include printing processes and ceramic construction techniques as well as the creation of finished forms with surface depth for low or high-fire clay bodies.
Each student receives two shelves to store work, clay, and tools. Prerequisite: Three sessions of ceramics experience
Guided Printmaking Projects 5 Weeks You’ve got the basics down in letterpress, screen printing, monotype or etching, now take the next step and explore color combinations, transparency and layering as you refine your personal vision in print. Demonstrations focus on student-specific print challenges but allow plenty of studio work time to help you turn your next printmaking dream project into reality.
Prerequisite: 10 weeks of printmaking classes or instructor approval
