GREY WATER Even though there is a concern of potable water being wasted when water is not recycled as grey water, grey water system is not considered for this site. The reasons are as followed: - As a family with organic nursery, the Henrys has a large varieties of plants, herbs and vegetables in their backyard garden. Grey water is not suited for herbs, citrus, vegetable seedlings etc as the water may include pathogens and chemicals. Thus, using grey water will limit what the Henrys can plant.

HEATING STRTEGIES:

HYDRONIC IN SLAB HEATING Well insulated reverse brick veneer (R2.5) give high levels of internal thermal mass by trapping the heat during day time and releasing it during cold nights. This way heating costs are effectively reduced.

https://www.yourhome.gov.au/passive-design/thermal-mass

Concrete slab under acts as a thermal mass that absorbs heat during the day. At night this heat is released back into the home.

No heating in wet areas as the spaces are not used for long period of time

The coil should not be under the kitchen cabinets as many services are under https://www.hydronic.com.au/systems/slab-heating/

HYDRONIC PANEL Carpet - provides thermal insulation by maintaining warm air in the room much longer thus contributes to energy efficiency

Hydronic Panel to be placed under window sill to prevent condensation on glazing and to regulate internal air temperature.

https://www.hydronic.com.au/products/radiators/

• combination of radiant and convective heating • has zoned temperature control • heated air is evenly distributed throughout a room • in slab heating transfer most of the heat by thermal radiation and reduce air temperature stratification, and thus reduce heat loss through ceilings.

Bosch Compress 3000 AW [COP of 4] 16 kW Hydronic Heat Pump (designed differenty from domestic water heat pumps) • dust free and allergen free form of heating • quiet and economical • main source of fuel: solar energy This means reliance on fossil fuels is reduced as well as utilities bill in long run.

• Reasonings for chosing hydronic heating: - Obviously a better option than electric heating system due to its high operational cost and low efficiency. - The Henrys are not considering gas as it is a fossil fuel. - In slab hydronic heating is visually unobtrusive and quiet. - it is a renewable technology - hydronic system produce little air movement -Thermal comfort can also be achieved by wearing adaptive clothes. Hydronic heat pump • Majority of the components in heating systems are unsuited to domestic water quality. • Susceptible parts can have corrosion and lead content will make heating systems incompatible for drinking water. Therefore two seperate heating systems for warming home and heating domestic water is preferred.

Pattern of pipes in slab - the whole room is heated before the water gets cold - more effiecient pattern

• According to Australian Climate Zone Register, Melbourne is within the climate zone 6 which has mild temperature. • Mild to cool winters with low humidity. • The main heating system for the family is the combination of Hydronic in Slab and Hydronic Panels. COOLING STRTEGIES: Summer

Winter

Surfmist® https://gardenerdy.com/deciduous-trees-facts

Light colored steel roof sheeting absorb less heat and reflect heat rays.

Deciduous trees acts as a natural cooling system as they provide shade to the building and interrupt radiation from the sun during summer months.

http://www.melbourneawningcentre.com.au/products/caretta-folding-arm-awnings

Trees, shrubs and other plants also contribute greatly to the cooling system as they have the evapotranspiration process where leaves produce water that evaporates later

3 fan blades use lower energy consumption than 4/5 blades.

• According to Australian Climate Zone Register, Melbourne is within the climate zone 6 which has mild temperature. • Hot to very hot summer with moderate humidity. • The main cooling system for the family is the use of ceiling fans. • Reasonings: -The house already present passive cooling strategies. -Thus, cooling comfort can be achieved simply by natural crossventilation and reducing solar heat gains. - To minimise cooling energy and cost by staying away from air conditioners and evaporative coolers. - Ceiling fans will not totally cool down the space but the cooling effect they create is enough for mild temperate zone. - Ceiling fans are energy efficient and environmental friendly thus lowering the carbon footprint just as the Henrys wants. - The fans are placed at a distance where they won’t interfere with the pendant lights.

https://www.beaconlighting.com.au/airfusion-radar-132cm-dc-fan-in-white-oak

Not every rooms need cooling system. In this case, bedroom 2 can do without any cooling due to the presence of good ventilation.

Legend https://www.dyson.com.au/dyson-cool-tower-fan-white-silver

The ceiling fans have low capital cost as well as operational cost. Direct Current ceiling fans consume 75% less electricity than standard ceiling fans. The running cost can be as low as 1 cent per hour which is the same as 60W bulb. https://www.beaconlighting.com.au/ceiling-fan-faqs

Name: Thin Myat Noe (Lily) Student Number: 1068240

When the weather is unbearably hot, portable fans such as Dyson Cool™ tower fan can be use for comfort.

The ceiling fans come with reverse function on the remote. This means that in winter mode, the blades change direction to clock-wise pushing warm air up to the ceiling and warm the room. Thus, this is not only efficient as a cooling system but also as a heating system.

The house does not have grey water system however use natural cleaning products where possible.

Install the Nest app and follow the instructions to set up the thermostat.

Regularly inspect your Aquacomb water system for proper functioning. Examine the pump , pump housing and exposed pipes for accidental damage. (Contact an approved service technician for services and maintenance.)

Heating period can be scheduled in advanced from anywhere as it is connected to Wifi.

The paving in the front yard is designed to capture rainfall only therefore refrain from doing other activities such as storing your garden soil on it as they can clog the paving. A small vacuum/ road sweeper/ a pressure washer can be used to clean the paving if blocked.
