B y fo ur t h grad e, I w as s t a r v i n g myse l f to b e a s t hi n as p o ssi b l e to avoid being called fat at school. Since the k ids were s o m e an to m e in private school, my parents thought that it might be better for me

to just go to a different sc h o o l, b u t i t j u st ended u p g e t t i n g e ve n wor se. I was the only new seventh grader that year an d h ad n e ve r b e e n to p u b l i c sc h o o l b e fo re, so I was naturally an outcast. Th e b u l l y i n g st ar ted IM M E D IAT E LY ! Wi t h i n a fe w minu tes, t h ey were shoving me, threatening me, and calling me horrible names like “ b *** *”, a “ ho”. (At t h e t im e, I had never even he l d hand s wi t h a b oy a nd had not yet even h a d a b oy f r i e n d ) . I didn’t u nd erst a n d why the kids turned on me so qu ick ly, but I k new that I was prett y much in for it by the end o f t h e l u n c h p e r i o d. I thought a lot about suic id e d uring t ha t time in my life. There was one point during that year, when I we nt to t he k itchen, a n d g o t a REAL LY larg e k ni fe. I p l a n ned to plun g e it through my hear t... I stood there wi t ho ut t hink i ng of mu ch, except for just wanting e ve r ything to b e over. As I held the k n i fe to my hear t, I looked down, a nd saw my d og lo o k i ng up at me with his big, sweet, brown eyes, and I sta r ted to cr y. I p ut t h e k nife on the table a nd drop ped to my k nees, a nd ju s t held hi m ! I couldn’t do it. M y grandma went to the school several times

to s ee i f sh e co u l d g e t t he s t af f m e m b e r s to inte r vene, but was told “ W E LCOM E TO T H E RE A L W O R L D ! ”. Th e p r i n c i p a l said that it must be my fault, because so many k ids hate d me. I received death threats on a daily basis. C h i ld re n wo u l d c al l my house at ALL hours of the night and threate n m e a nd my gran d m a. They would tell her that I was a “slut ” and then tell her to te l l m e n o t to bend over at school or I was going to get raped. They would threaten to slit my throat. I ac tually had a k nife to my throat o n t wo o cc asi o n s. O n e time a boy was telling me that he would slit my throat if I didn’t k iss him. (I told him that I’d rather have my throat slit and he walked away). Another time was w h e n a gi r l fo l l owe d m e wi t h a gro u p o f h e r f ri en d s, w h i l e I w as trick- or-treating and t hen a p p ro ac h e d m e i n a d a r k g u l l e y.

I don’t k n ow if t h at gi r l wo u l d h ave ac tually slit my throat that night, but I never fo rg o t t h at gi r l w ho sto o d u p fo r m e aga inst a l l o f h e r f r i e n d s. Years late r, when we we re adults, I ran into h e r an d I t h an k e d her for her courage and k i n d n e ss. Th ro u g h al l o f t h e b u l l y i n g, I j u s t t r i e d to re m ai n c al m an d stay st ro n g. I never wanted to f i t i n w i t h t h e k ids in school. As a matter of fac t, I thought that t h e y we re aw f u l p e opl e, so I didn’t even want to be around them at all. I just wanted to be l e f t al o n e. I d i d n’t feel r i g h t h u r t i n g anyone, but it became apparent that I needed some se l f - d e fe n ce l e sso ns. I at least needed some co n f i d e n ce.

She ran into the house with the little boys that she was b a bysitting, but my

sweet and loyal, little d o g wo u l d n’t co m e i ns i d e. H e st aye d o u t i n the yard bark ing at the kids and they kicked him i n t h e f ace ! M y gra n d m a ye l l e d fo r me to c al l t h e p o l i ce, s o I d i d. We got antiharassment orders on the main perpetrator a n d h e r m o t h e r, b u t i t was too late. M y dog was my best f r i e n d i n t h e wo r l d a n d h e d i ed b e c au se so m e k ids hated ME. Th at d o g had b e e n my b e st f r i e n d grow i n g u p w h e n I h a d n o f r i e n d s. M y gra n d p a g o t h i m w h e n he was just a puppy for my s i s te r an d I as o u r

adoption present when I was VERY young, so we had literally grown up to g e t h e r. He was there for me A LWAYS w h e n I n e eded h i m an d h e e ve n saved my life that one night i n t h e k i tc h e n w h e n I didn’t want to live any m o re, b u t I f ai l e d to b e t h e re w h e n h e n e e d e d m e to p ro tec t h i m , an d I fe l t so te r r i b l e t h at I w asn’t t h e re fo r h i m w h e n he was getting k icked by those k ids. I was devastated and fell into a d e e p d e p re ssi o n .

I b e g an to m a k e f r i e n d s a n d I made my way out of the d a rk n e ss an d i n to t h e light. I never fo rgot how it felt to be ostracized and beat up ever y day. Whenever I would see s o meon e p i c k i n g o n s o meon e, I wo u l d st an d up, a nd te l l t h e m to k no ck i t o f f. I n e ve r wanted to be like the p eo p le w h o we re so h o r r i b l e to m e. I co u l d never l i ve w i t h myse l f for treating others that way.

While I was writing this, I fe l t a l o t o f p ai n for that sad, little gi rl that I once was. I wanted to re ac h o u t an d te l l her that her life was going to g e t b e t te r, an d to love herself. Stuff that my mama (grandma) always said to me that I se e m e d to n o t b e a bl e to gra s p i n t h e d a r k n e s s o f my ad o l e sce n ce.

Through all of the bullying, I just tried to remain calm and stay strong.

I thought about what people might say to m e n ow… “ H e l e n , w hy wo u l d yo u w r i te so m e t h i n g so p e r sona l and private about your l i fe, an d t h e n p u b l ish it fo r a b u n c h o f p e o pl e to read?” I’ll tell you why... B e c au se w h at h ap pened to me was not personal or private AT ALL!

NOT ONE ADULT who was not related to me said that what the other k ids we re doing was wrong. I he ard “ Well, i t mus t b e YOU R fault s om eh ow ”. “ The boys ju s t p i ck o n yo u/teas e you b eca us e t he y lik e you.” They j us t a l l owed it to h a p p en a nd s aid s tu pi d rub b i s h l i k e “ B oys w i l l b e b oys.” and “ That ’s just the way k ids are.” No one taught the k ids that the way they were treating me and other children was una cceptable. As a matter of fac t, some of t he ad ults ac t ua lly JOI NED IN and tea s ed me too! Teach ers A ND parents! That disgusts me. B ul l ying is not a harmless prank that c hil d ren play o n o n e another. I t is ABUSE.
