Introduction & Philosophy The West Chicago Park District’s Keppler Academy Preschool focuses on the developmental needs of children from three to five years old. Keppler Academy is designed to give children the tools and experiences necessary to assure a positive transition to kindergarten. Our program offers a warm, nurturing, and friendly environment where children can explore, create, and flourish. Socialization skills and independence are developed through a variety of daily skills and exercises. Our philospophy is that all children learn through hands-on experiences, exploration, and positive interactions with others. Every child is unique and will develop at their own pace. We foster an environment that will help all children succeed emotionally, physically, and socially. Every child has their own learning style and we give many options to explore and build on those abilities. (GR)

Registration, Payment & Additional Information Registration now being accepted for the 2016-17 school year. Children must be age appropriate for program by September 1, 2016. There is a $50 fee per child due at the time of registration to secure your child’s place in the program. The fee is non-refundable and non-transferable. Take advantage of our convenient monthly EFT (Electronic Fund Transfer) payment plan where payments are automatically withdrawn from your credit or debit card on the first of the month (September through May). All yearly fees must be paid in full at time of registration. Keppler Academy is located at 161 W. National Street in West Chicago. Keppler Academy follows District 33’s days off school calendar.

Off 2 School This program focuses on preschool preparedness skills such as walking in a line, taking turns, listening, circle time, following directions, sharing and participating in clean-up time. Emphasis is placed on socialization skills as well as building self-confidence and self-esteem. Students do not need to be potty trained, but parents must be available to come back to the ARC center in case of an accident. (GR) 2 yrs

MARTIAL ARTS Judo (sport): Simple and Basic

Dragon Tots

Judo is two individuals who, by gripping uniforms, use forces of balance, power, timing and physics to subdue their opponents. Judo does not use striking techniques of any kind. It’s a purely defensive sport, based on other’s aggressive moves. It involves techniques of throwing, grappling, submission holds. It all starts from a standing position and then moves to the ground for submission techniques or to pin your opponent. Promotions are based on competitions from green, brown and black belt ranks. Uniforms are mandatory as are four competitions per year. Great cross training for wrestlers. (BK)

Structured on semi-traditional format, emphasizes self-discipline, accountability, goal setting and respect. Participants learn basic techniques utilizing coordination, balance, timing and repetition.

This class covers beginner to advanced empty hand self-defense applications, such as joint locks, throws, striking techniques, escapes, wrist controls, and falling both basic and advanced. Throwing is a basic part of jiu-jitsu and ground work. Most MMA sport techniques are based on combat applications taught by jiu-jitsu. Uniforms are mandatory after first class. Please see instructor. ADULT TRIPS

Trip To The

Mississippi River Break away from the cabin fever with this 3 day spring trip of scenic Mississippi River towns! Trip includes coach bus transportation, 2 overnight hotel stays, sled or zip line day 1, river boat cruise day 2, lunch and breakfast day 1, breakfast lunch and dinner day 2 and breakfast and lunch day 3, and chaperone. (ML)

Day1 This 3 day adventure begins as we board a coach bus for the rolling hills of Jo Davis County and the Chestnut Mountain Resort in Galena. We’ll have lunch at the Summit Restaurant perched high on a bluff overlooking the upper Mississippi River Valley. • Ride a sled down 2,050 feet of tailored track to the banks of the Mississippi or take to the skies and soar high above the mountain’s peak for an eagle’s perspective of the Majestic Upper Mississippi River Valley on the Eagle Zip Line. • Learn about Galena’s rich history on a narrated trolley tour of the Historic District and then enjoy shopping at the many art galleries, antique stores and eclectic boutiques and shops. • Board the bus as we set our sights on an over-night in historic Dubuque, Iowa, a two-time All-America City with a little bit of everything to offer: natural beauty, lively culture, and genuine relaxation, in a historic river town setting.

Day 2 Our day long adventure includes a relaxing cruise aboard the Celebration Belle along the mighty Mississippi River. The Captain will be our guide to the wildlife, valley landscapes and historic river towns as we cruise downriver to the Quad Cities and our overnight destination, Le Claire, Iowa.

Day 3 Our day begins breakfast and then an introduction to the city of Moline where we’ll learn about a true American success story with a visit to the John Deere Pavilion. • Leaving Moline we’ll travel across large expanses of rich, flat farmland dotted with the occasional small agricultural community, as we make our way to the unincorporated village of Grand Detour to visit the John Deere Historic Site. We’ll enjoy a tour of the homestead offering a glimpse into pioneer life. • All good things must come to an end, so too does our time on tour. Sit back and relax, as we begin our journey home. 21+ yrs

OUR PARKS Cornerstone Lakes Park

Kress Creek Farms

Reed-Keppler Park

Cornerstone Lakes Park is located along Smith Road on the north side of the city. Featuring a 25-acre lake for catch and release fishing, one playground, an asphalt trail, seven soccer fields, a sand volleyball court, one baseball/softball diamond, a picnic shelter, and native landscaping, the park is picture perfect for a Sunday afternoon.

On a sunny weekend you’ll find plenty of activity at Kress Creek Farms since it houses our 18 cage Disc Golf Course, Chicago Bears themed playground and trail system. Located along Joliet Street on the south side of the city, Kress Creek Farms has rolling hills, native landscaping, and a small pond for catch and release fishing.

Reed-Keppler Park is West Chicago’s premier park. The park contains the ever popular Turtle Splash Water Park, six baseball/softball diamonds, four picnic shelters, skate park, a two-acre dog park named Wiggly Field, Keppler Academy Preschool, several trails, and multiple playgrounds. Adjacent to Reed-Keppler Park is the Geneva Spur bike trail, an integral part of the Illinois Prairie Path system and the Dyer Nature area. Through the generosity of John and Joan Dyer and their appreciation of natural lands they have donated 25 acres of prairie and wetlands named after them in their honor. Reed-Keppler Park is the home to the ARC Center (Athletics, Recreation & Community).

Dyer Riverwood Farm Park This seven-acre site donated by John and Joan Dyer is bordered on the west side by the DuPage River. As part of an intergovernmental agreement between the West Chicago Park District and the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County, the park now contains a bike trail that links to the Illinois Prairie Path System.

Easton Park Located on the south side of Washington Street in the City of West Chicago. In addition, ash trees have been replaced in the park though a $10,000 Urban Restoration grant. Easton Park contains a playground, a catch and release pond, trails and picnic areas and new pavilion.

Hampton Hills & Prince Crossing Parks Located adjacent to Hampton Hills and Prince Crossing Trails subdivisions, these two parks make up one great neighborhood park. The Hampton Hills side which is accessible at 719 Hampton Course Drive features a catch and release pond, gazebo and path system. The Prince Crossing side which is accessible at 900 McCormick Lane features a playground and path system.

Hawthorne Park

Kwasman Memorial Park This neighborhood park is located within the Forest Trails subdivision and has been renamed in honor of former Mayor Mike Kwasman. The park contains a playground and is adjacent to the Illinois Prairie Path and Great Western Trail intersects for easy access.

Meadow Woods Park Ideally situated in Meadow Woods subdivision along Klein Road, this sevenacre park features a playground and picnic shelter and is the host to many lacrosse games.

Pioneer Park This community park is located on the south side of the city. Pioneer Park features a pond, two pavilions, a playground, a soccer field, four baseball/softball fields, and a splash pad. A more expansive grass area is being developed for soccer.

Prestonfield Park Significant features of this park located in the Prestonfield subdivision are a buffer woodland area, playground, and picnic shelter. The property is monitored by the Mighty Acorn, a school-aged children’s group who assists the Park District with conservation efforts while learning about nature.

Wiggly Field Dog Park A free dog park located at the west end of Reed-Keppler Park. This fenced-in dog park is open from dawn to dusk seven days a week and gives dogs and their owners an off-leash place to play. Stop in and check out the new asphalt entrance, small dog enclosure and dog agility equipment. Running water is not available at Wiggly Field, please take part in using and re-filling the water jugs available by the park entrance.

Southpaw Dog Park Located just South of Wiggly Field, the new South Paw Dog Park has opened its doors for dogs 20 lbs. and under. This fenced-in dog park is open from dawn to dusk seven days a week and gives dogs and their owners an off-leash place to play.

EXCITING NEWS!

Improvements Coming Soon During the summer of 2014, the West

Chicago Park District was awarded a PARC grant from the

Illinois Department of Natural Resources. (Parks and Recreation Construction). This was a competitive process, and West Chicago was one of the first to receive the award. The purpose of the award was to create

large group activity spaces,

and West Chicago Park District wished to emphasize opportunities for sport and athletic performance and training, along with ancillary features. After the state election of 2014 these grants were suspended.

The good news is the West Chicago Park District has received notification the grant has been reinstated. Therefore, this spring consturction of the new facility will begin. Over the past few years the District has made way for this addition by removing its old maintenance garage and removing the area occupied by the Gun Club. With this additional space, the District has an opportunity to expand

the campus of activities

in Reed Keepler Park, and offer

another complimentary venue.

Look for a grand opening January of 2018! The West Chicago Park District is very appreciate of the support the community has given to the usage of the ARC Center. However, focus on neighborhood parks has not been forgotten and is a pritority.

Look for the following improvements taking place at parks near you:

New entry at the Core in Reed Keppler as well as replacement of the original fencing at all ball fields in the District.

Completion of a one mile walking trail at Pioneer Park as well as the construction of two new soccer fields.

Replacing an outdated playground at Reed Keppler with outdoor musical instruments.

New additions to Kress Creek farms including parking, shelter, walkways and bridge.

New infield at Cornerstone Lakes ball field and replacement of asphalt at parking area.

Additional play features at Dyer Nature Area in Reed Keppler.

Replacement of playground center piece at Kwasman Park.

Opening of Southpaw Dog Park for small dogs.
