“At its best, [Japanese cooking] is inextricably meshed with aesthetics, with religion, with tradition and history. It is evocative of seasonal changes, or of one’s childhood, or of a storm at sea.” - M.F.K Fisher

S I T E A N A LY S I S Located at the intersection of Dupont Circle, Downtown, Foggy Bottom, and Georgetown, West End is a high-end commercial and residential neighborhood attracting both visitors and residents of the area. Onaga, located at New Hampshire Ave NW and M St. NW, provides an immersive, sophisticated, and intimate refuge in contrast to the active city streets.

EXISTING SITE CONDITIONS Onaga is located in the ground floor of a 9 story boutique hotel. The ground floor houses the main hotel entry leading to an elevators and stairs which lead guests to the first floor lobby.

CONCEPT Japanese design philosophies of simplicity and ambiguity inform the organization of space and treatment of materials. Onaga establishes an immersive experience that suspends guests in time and place, shifting focus to the beauty of the present moment. Dining enclaves carved out of heavy, natural stone create an experience that insulates guests from the outside world and interior circulation. Materiality conveys the passage of time, with raw stone communicating “historic and geological memory” juxtaposed with aged wood, a reminder of impermanence.

Material selections recall Wabi, the Japanese design philosophy which indicates an aesthetic preference for what is simple, old, and rustic, highlighting the beauty found in the imperfection of raw, natural materials. Materials that are raw, reclaimed, and patinated provide a sense of spiritual freedom evoked by the passage of time.
