“Reading makes immigrants of us all. It takes us away from home, but more important, it finds homes for us everywhere. Jean Rhys
Reading and writing are essential skills without which it will be impossible to succeed. The skill to understand, to derive meaning from texts, the ability to use words in such a way that you can express yourself in a correct and beautiful way is one of the aims of the eTwinning project WordsWise. The poems were written as part of the activity diVerse. 10th and 11th students wrote them and students in partner schools illustrated and presented some of them. It was an activity that contributed to a different approach to language, it enhanced students’ vocabulary and made them aware of the importance of vocabulary, rhythm and imagery, among other things.
Snow, Alexandre Garcia
When it falls everybody rejoices Forgetting the cold White freezing feeling
How pure and rare Nature becomes Shy and powerful Like the polar bear
Everybody plays Like the child among friends Snowmen’s land Happy hearts Frozen hands.
Roses, Alexandrina Fernandes
I’m like a rose I have petals and thorns I can love you And create storms
Roses, just like us Need love and affection Don’t worry about looks You’ve got the perfect complexion
We’re like kids Playing with the snow So, will you let it die Or let it grow?
Last but not the least I grant you a wish Do you prefer a rose Or rather a kiss?
Big city, Silent city, Ana Afonso I fall in love with big cities So big and noisy That my mind grows silent. That odd feeling Of people around me That makes me feel so lonely.
My city is painted with feelings Light feelings, dark feelings It is filled with lovers and dreamers Signs of happiness and fear
So many lives in every street Indistinguishable in their qualities And in their disorder With no division between them Lives twisted in warmth and terror And I am still alive
At night staring at the lights I can never truly sleep Thinking about every broken heart Wondering what would happen If we within our emotions
By the first lights of dawn I find myself staring at the sky And I see beauty Even if I don’t understand What I am staring at I rejoice ‘cause I know
it keeps me alive, it energizes The sun, like a light through my veins Where my heart is merry and blossoms
Every day I feel the sun smiling at me gently My body, like a bird, singing a melody Like a beautiful promise of future happiness The city will be a melodic memory With purity, love and perfection To be found in every corner
I want to live in a big city Where people´s lives glow like stars A city of joy, of promises Of new, better feelings Looking for purity and sweetness A city so noisy and So silent in its meaning.
You, Ana Beatriz Nascimento, Ana Rita Machado
When I hear your call My heart is racing and I feel it’s all my fault I can’t feel the touch of my hand
We were so young when we met You saw the darkness of my mind I will never forget Is it so difficult for you to remember?
I had to leave Self-preservation You have to believe This is a good intention
We are toxic together Yet we tried, oh we tried I will love you forever But goodbye is due To the paradise We might have created.
Fear, Ana Carolina Lopes
I put my hand in a bag Without knowing What I would find And this fear terrified me I grew up Without knowing What life would be like And this fear terrified me I live my life Without knowing What it will bring me And this fear terrifies me
Money, Ana Gato, Francisca Pires
I consider money beautiful
Money is precious Money is power Dollars help kids Euros build towers
Unfortunately it can’t buy all the things That often make us happy But I would rather cry in Bali Than cry looking all messy
Even though money brings happiness It also brings responsibility We should fight against greed And live how we’re meant to be
The ointment that doesn't heal hearts, Ana Mira
A plastic packaging, Soft and cold, As some hearts, as some feelings. I can´t press it, Or it may explode. And when the content ends?! Do we buy another one? Or do we live with the wound? Even so, there is still no ointment To cover the pain Of a broken heart.
Dancing into the world, Ana Nequinha Ana Sofia Pires
I loved you from the very start You stole my breath, embraced my heart Our life together has just begun You’re part of me, my little one
My mind would be filled with thoughts of you I’m daydreaming of the things we’ll share, Like first steps and skinned knees Like giving my all to this new dare.
It was so unexpected It felt like butterflies The way you touched me The way you changed my life.
Friendship, Ana Raquel Fernandes Such a beautiful form of love That can hurt even more It can change your life Like you’d never seen before It makes you think you can trust It makes you feel loved Even though it might seem fun You don’t know if it’s the right one You never know who is true Neither who is fake But someone you can always trust Will make stay awake.
A black melody, Ana Rita Rolo, Bruna Lopes
Forever together in the moon Looking at the starry sky We live our dreams at noon We can learn to fly
I live in a perfect dream Where I can be everything I can`t hear you scream Turning the world into nothing
The shine of the moon Plus the glow of the ember Make us remember You are my boon
Just close your eyes Please, look at the stars I believe, or are these lies Shall we expect scars?
Is it real or not? , Beatriz MĂłs
The green of the leaves The brown of the trunks plus The glow of the sun Make the perfect portrait.
A portrait of which We will not only remember the image But also the sound Of the wind passing through the leaves.
Leaves that will fall With strong winds Covering the ground. Leaves that will fly With the passage of animals Whispering beautifully in our ears.
Animals that we’ll find hidden Behind the trees and the bushes So that we will work harder To remember them among all that beauty.
Beauty that is found not only In the green leafy surroundings In the different colours tinting trunks and shadows.
In the end this is just A beautiful image of a forest That was created by ourselves...
Biodiversity. Is it a myth? Can such beauty only exist In our imagination? Well, I don’t think so! This portrait is real, very real, you just have to find it in your hearts again and it’ll be true!
Smile, Beatriz Gomes, Marco GalvĂŁo
A true smile Isn’t hard to find As in this world Everything is possible Dogs in spaceships And airplanes in the sky With all this animation Just give it a try A true smile a stop-a-war smile Will be for humanity What the sun is for the bud May time never take away The reason for my smile And may it allow New stories to unfold.
Who am I?, Beatriz Pires
When I see my reflection in water I see someone I don’t know anymore Someone changed by others I’m not there anymore When I look into the mirror I don’t see a beautiful face My legs shake I feel utterly out of place
Cold Season, Bruna Carvalho I’m missing you When I say that, I miss you more I’m looking at your photo, but I still miss you Time is so cruel I hate us Now it’s hard to even see each other’s faces How much more do I have to wait? How many more nights do I have to stay up? Until I can see you Until I can meet you Snowflakes are falling Getting farther away I miss you I miss you
Perspectives, Bruno Exposto
Waiting till Summer rises Stuck in the freezing rain In my head echoed the advice Of those who were called insane They told me to see the snowflakes Honestly, it seems quite way-out And I am certainly in doubt For a strange hint that makes But I did what they told me And I finally understood Even in the soulless wintry cold It´s possible to see some good.
Music, Bruno Sendas, Rúben Gonçalves
Music is feeling Music is art If I don't have it I’m missing a part
Without it life Wouldn’t be the same Nothing I would do Would have an aim
When I'm sad I just need a tune Then winter will fade Say “Hello” to June
Music is my world Whichever the style It brings us happiness All the world can smile
Rainbow, Catarina Ramos
Rainbow, so vigorous From sorrow and greyness, Into a sprinkle of joy Entrenched in our hearts Magnificent! A mix of emotions A mix of colours From the peace of water To satanic red. A drop of water, so simple With the perfect ray may be everything oh, yes it may!
My Life for Them, Celina Fontenete, Mariana Pereira
You enter this world Not knowing why But, no effort made, You suddenly become The reason Someone breathes.
You are a piece of life Hopeful like green Lovely like red Peaceful like white Sensitive like blue Immature like purple Happy like the rainbow The rainbow in your parents’ life!
Parents that will always Protect you from this Mad world. And will always fight For you!
And I’m sure I would at anytime, anywhere Give my life For Them!
Thunder, Daniel Martins
The sound it makes is the strongest I’ve ever seen. Feels like it’s alive and free, freer then I’ve ever been
Dashing through the sky, like a blinding force, causing sadness or fright, to me just a joyful course.
When it finally hits, chaos for someone’s heart, blasting, exploding. For me, just a piece of art.
If I were different, Daniela Félix
People always say we should change something So, if I were taller I should probably be shorter If I were fatter I should probably be thinner If I were more talkative It’s because I’m too provocative If I were shier Everyone conspires Guess what? We can’t please everyone That’s something we have to overrun.
The mountains, Daniel Fernandes, José João
Beautiful and powerful Standing proud Mother nature telling us How little we are How vain our worries
A shelter, a threat, a place for peace? How many lives depend on it?
And yet so vulnerable… A gust of wind, an ax, a flame And we’re to blame.
Why so much greed? Why so much slaying? It’s all so futile. In the end we’ll take nothing We will just be Ashes or bones in a pile
Nature, Diana Duarte
Nature, what this word conveys‌ Purity, tranquillity, the transparency of a look. A look, uncompared to anything Because a look can express so much. NATURE. Unmatched.
Mountain high, Diogo Fernandes, Tiago Fernandes
A mountain, covered in snow Such a beautiful space All that white glow The trees, hunched The animals hidden The temperature, so low In the late afternoon I warm by the sunset And all my sorrow forget
My boots are wet And my body is cold The sun, less bold Those last rays Trembling and weak And I seek The beauty, the night Darkness in a while And I look in zest For a moment to rest And the right place My course to face.
Writing, Edite Fernandes
I came here to write a poem But I don’t know what to write about Maybe I’ll write about something And give it the benefit of doubt
I can try to write something good About being loved, hated or proud But I am sure that will not seduce Even if I write on top of a cloud
Writing is an art That few can master, too I think I am a lucky one For a poem I can give to you
Respect, Eduardo Moreno
Respect me And I'll respect you You'll be happy And I'll be too.
Walk into each day With your heart soaked in hope and joy As day fades and night endures Respect will never destroy.
Respect is a lesson that everyone should learn Respect must be given before expected in return Respect is something that comes free But it is not earned easily.
Respect can be shown by doing small things Giving it is something only you can decide We can all appreciate the comfort it brings And you will also feel such pride.
A pirate’s life, Eduardo Ferreira
I was a Pirate and I lived on a ship The name of the ship was Black Pearl Always searching for treasures And for wealth out of this world
My life was perfect Adventure all year round Until the British fleet Sent my ship down
Now, what is a pirate With no friend and no crew And no ship too? Just someone dreaming Of all that surface Blue.
A Beach, Flávio Gonçalves
Some are really searching for the perfect one The one hidden from the crowds Where sand and sea mingle in the perfect glow
For me a beach is a summer thing. Would I rather live in the mountains or there? I don’t have a clue What it’d be like to replace green with blue I don’t know Maybe I just prefer the snow
Tragic love story between a centre and a point (of a circle), Francisco Moras
Oh my dear point How I wish you were here Even though all the other points Are a radius from my heart It feels like we are a whole diameter apart
True love, Gabriel Borges, Ricardo Lucas
The first time I saw you It was a dream come true Everything so beautiful Just like you
True Love Would fill up my life But it is unpredictable Like a dice
My love for you Is loyal and pure It’s as if I am sick And you are my cure
I’d use my last minute To stay with you Because that is what True love would do.
Life and Death, Gabriel Simão Gonçalves
Life is a beautiful lie Death is a cruel truth But think clearly about it Is that what goes inside you?
Maybe death is beautiful too Maybe there's something to be proud Because the sun is unknown too Until we part with the cloud.
I know it's hard to face the end I know it doesn’t seem real Life may be good for most For others just an ordeal!
Cars, Gabriel Pires
Decided are my ways, Altered are my days, I know where to move, I know the way to reach. My destination is too far to be seen, With a map set in my mind, With a slow speed I will start, The engine of my car. Well I am the lone driver, I am the lone traveller, Gear is set. Mind is set right, Mirror is well set up, I have the three dimensional view. Slowly I accelerate Increase speed, I know when to brake, I know when to speed, I know when to change gear. Here I am‌ set to go!
Christ, the Redeemer, Giovanni Carnevale One of the 7 wonders In its essence One religion The beauty of love
The Christ Looking at us Protecting the nation Making us safe In his embrace
With God on our side There is no need to fear Nothing will touch us Forever justice here.
Success, Gonçalo Martins
Success In everyone’s desire Success is at the top If you want to fight a fire Or even become a cop
If you want to have success Just need a little advice Never try to impress And don’t believe the dice
Hard work and dedication Are the two main rules Find the right motivation And don’t listen to the fools
Try to get inspiration Even if it may seem hard Grind on your vacation And some day you’ll have a business card
Winter, Guilherme Fernandes
You are coming I can feel it in your freezing wind I can see it in your frozen rain While watching your frosting flakes falling I´m inside while you´re outside I’m trying to stay warm And I know you are coming While watching wearily your wicked waves.
Read this poem, Guilherme Fernandes
You´re reading my poem But why are you reading it? Is it because it caught your attention? Or because it caused you apprehension? Do you want more rhyme? I can give you that in no time But truly I wrote this poem To tell you something That you probably already knew You´re wonderful Don´t change anything about you Don´t lose your grace But mostly... Be yourself
Dream, Iara Sá, Maria Carolina Abreu
I’m asking you to teach me your symphony The one that makes my heart race faster So hold my hands tighter And run them through the keys
I can still feel the warmth of your hand in my dreams That cold and freezing melody But what if my eyes can no longer close?
Will I lose my sleep staring at the stars that fly through the sky? Those little million lights that remind me of your eyes The ones I’ve already lost sight
How may this flightless bird learn how to touch the sky and keep your precious song in my heart? If it was meant to be, we would still be by now All I can see is you fading through the moonlight I want you back but I don`t know how
Maybe we could rewrite the stars Change this tragic fate of mine As you were the one I was meant to find
But every miracle comes at a price It seems impossible Please tell me it’s possible I shall dream of it tonight.
Friend, Inês Afonso
You never seemed kind to me Your blond hair never gave me confidence Your brown eyes looked empty And to become your friend I had no patience Now, it´s been almost two years And I´ve never felt so complete I hope you can stand my tears Because you´re definitely a friend to keep!

Magic, JĂŠssica Picote
I used to drown in the ocean of me screaming up my name my lungs burning up with shame for letting that happen to me I used to choke on my own words so afraid of thinking differently frightened of upsetting the Lords stepping the world so carefully I am eighteen by now nineteen I will be found what I was looking for found the magic inside of me
Life, JoĂŁo Gomes
Tick tock, tick tock Life is counting down on an internal clock Memories that feel as if they occurred yesterday Turn to flashes of moments that seem to fade away People you once knew Walk by without a clue The times you once shared Exist as if you were never there
Heart full of music, João Nunes
Wherever I go I have my guitar Even though it stays in my heart I keep my music for myself Because I know I won't go Far
It's a form of art Unimaginably a part Of my long gone childhood Where they tried to shut my mood
Now I’ve created this melody No one will ever understand I learnt the secret tune And it fixed my broken heart
Now let’s show the world All the songs I’ve got inside I’ve ascended to the horizon Taken my music far and wide.
Waterfall, João Padrão
Waterfall is the power of nature It’s life proving us the impossible, It’s water slipping slowly, Suddenly falling, Small drops of water hugely impacting the universe.
For some it’s a dream For others a nightmare I just hope one day Not to have wished in vain To maybe see you again.
Friendship, JoĂŁo Rodrigues
It´s good to have a friendship You carry one of endless devotion Forged out of respect And every kind of emotion
It makes me feel good At the end of the day To know that you will never Be more than one message away
Friendship is something That money cannot buy Without it many of us would Just shrivel up and die
Good friends are Like the stars in the sky They stay with us forever And teach us how to fly
A friend gives you hope When life is low A friend is a place When you have nowhere to go
Expectation, João Vaz
Who just expects life To be an illusion Can feel loneliness Or get lost in confusion
Let´s joyfully avoid Any disappointing part We only have one life And just this one heart
It’s not easy, that’s true To find out where to go But I guess a good start Would be a friendly “hello”.
Friend, Lara Moreira
Between the moon and the stars You’ll always be The one who shines the most Can’t you see?
They can have many forms Touch you in many ways But what matters is Each ones stays
Even if it doesn’t look like They are always around And when the night falls They will be found
Art, Lara Gaspar
Art is beautiful Hard to explain Bet it a small drawing Or the art of dancing
Art is painting Art is to imagine To embrace the world With a different look
Art is unspeakable It's more than seeing It is to see how colourful The world may be even when it's raining
Art has always been around Depicted in ancient caves In the blue songs of the slaves. In a thunder and its sound.
Infinite Sky, Lara Semanas
If you can't see what I see You are just blind If you can't feel what I feel Maybe you’ve just died.
But if you can see the gorgeous Spheres full of light You will see the most wonderful Demonstration of life.
And if you can feel your Soul often living your body You are just feeling the magic Of those little "nobodys"
We must enjoy The spotlights of the night On this beautiful sky Never deem it too high.
Love the night, LuĂs Sousa, Mateus Moutinho
My life is dark Just like the night Alone in the park Under the moonlight And I see nobody close So late at this time
When others are in bars I’m here watching the stars I love being here All by myself But I would like to share With someone as well
With someone I could Chat all through the night We could just stay here Until the first sunlight.
Family, Manuel Marta
The first people to know you The ones who gave you a name They give you love And a place to belong
I don’t know when it started or how it began but God created families as only our Lord can
Being a family Means you are a part of something beautiful it means you will love and be loved
The love of a family is life’s greatest blessing
Roses, Manuela Gonçalves Our lives are like roses We bend and we break Both of us too many But each one unique With our own little dreams
I once wondered … But now I know What happens When you cut a rose Before it grows
Stand through the winters Be independent Learn to dream Fight for that dream It’s never too soon Or no one else will bloom For you.
No one should stop you Even if they threat to cut Your own roots Get out, unveil your strength, Reject no thorn And your new self Will be born.
Dreams, Marco Ferreira, Pedro Cruz
Dreams are gifts from God Whether they’re good or bad There’s no reason to be sad Or to wish you hadn’t had
In the good ones rejoice They will come true, you expect They are to cherish and protect Make them your path, your choice.
The bad ones forget Destroy them without regret Don’t simply get afraid Let their evil mood just fade
Dreams will keep you safe Away from fear and depression Don’t lose that magic place Your beautiful expression
Theatre, Margarida Teixeira
It´s there that life awakes: new colours, new lights, new sounds and gestures free themselves, following dancing words.
It’s there that questions grow: To be or not to be? To love or to hate? To laugh, to sing or to see it coming that time to cry?
It’s there that you fight. That you dream of freedom; The word wandering in the page reaching high on stage.
It’s there magic happens. It’s there Theatre comes alive and there, it’s Life.
Water, Maria Helena Geraldes
Water, the magic kingdom of blue
What is water? Water is spark Water is the ocean of your thoughts If you think you are alone, plunge into the water, and if you are drowning, see what water has to offer, see the fish, see the different colors, see the variations of blue, and if you believe in fairy tales, see the magic, see the mermaids, the charms Feel the magic Feel its touch Water is alive, Don’t fight it, Accept it
Sunset, Maria Gonçalves
Let’s reflect on the day About every moment Let’s see the sunset Hope tomorrow can be better
By the sea On the hill In the forest All we’re chasing Is the sunset
We are looking for a better place Doesn't matter where we go If there's a moment when it's perfect It’s when the sun Sets.
Poem, Maria João Carvalho I remember with love When you hated me I’m glad we let the bad things above And now we’re both happy. I hope you remember When I sent you a text You were by my side on September I know you’ll be with me in the next
Love, Mariana Silva
I love you not knowing how You look like a stranger But I love you in secret And it’s not from now Every time I see you I get lost in those ocean eyes I can’t let you go Not even with all those lies I am not ready to let you go You are too important for me I just want you to know That I love you beastly.
Books, Mariana Vilarinho
I love books Fantasy and fiction Are my addiction Some people may use cars, trains or a plane I travel with books No destination aims Tickets aren't cheap But the well of your imagination will be deep The ride could be good or quite a nightmare Filled with happiness, sorrow or despair But I really don't care Books offer you a new life Just out of the blue They’re a dream come true Some people would like to live there But just one step and you would be dead If you think not Because characters never die Talk to George R.R. Martin It will change your mind
Poem, Marisa Félix
I know there are things You like to hide But it doesn’t matter Because I will always be by your side You don’t trust in many people But I don’t criticize Because I know what it is To be afraid of showing your life.
Songs, Martim Antunes
Another red letter day, So the pound is dropped And the children are creating. The other half ran away, Taking all the cash Leaving you in the limbo. Got a pain in the chest, What you need is a rest, It’s not easy but, You got friends you can trust. Friends will be there, When you’re in need of love And need care and attention. Friends will be there, When you’re through with life And all hope is lost Hold out your hand because Right till the end, Friends will be there.
Fire, Mikael Cubo
The fire warms the soul With its movements And its changing colours. A means to revenge. Home or hell Misery of some Salvation of others Fire, like love, Springs from light Either painful or bright.
Basketball, Nelson Fernandes
It started at Christmas That’s checked off my wish list Now it is a lot of fun The NBA is not done 66 game season That’s a reason To give all you got And to take the open shot There were a lot of cheers Six days from New Year New year of basketball All teams will have to fall It is all the same It is not a new game But no teams are locked in For playoff contention But who will get there? 30 teams are on the air.
Stop, Pedro Gomes
Stop You stop Feel my heartbeat Touch my hands Come here, take a sit Let’s get a plane and guess where it lands Open the window Time is yours But Your heart stops You feel you’re cracked You look at those clocks And you feel you’re trapped The time has come And you’re between the white and red Oh God you’re so dumb Have you forgotten the first rule you had? Stop being theirs Start being you Red light to those billionaires Green to your YOU
Friendship II, Rafael Freitas, Nelson Santos
Friendship is to smell someone’s perfume and caress it; It is to feel the joy and happiness in the air; It is to scream and smile at a person; Multiply the joys and divide the sadness. Good friends are like stars: You don’t always see them But you know they’ll be there Eternal, infinite, true. You may get upset There may be some regret But when friendship is strong Nothing can go wrong You feel like you belong.
The gift of having a sister, Raquel Pinheiro
When love reveals itself, And you can’t describe the feeling, But it’s good to look at her and know, She’s tiny but she’s your life, though.
She makes me happy every day, I feel her eyes from afar, Her beautiful smile, Shining all day like a star.
She's the one who makes me smile, Who fills my days. the one who says There’s meaning in chaos, This is friendship and love.
My sister was a love choice, A love work in progress. She made me discover My inner powers This unbound love And determination To stand by and watch To protect and cherish From now on My sole occupation
Football, Rita Vaz
Football is art A beautiful moment An impossible explanation It’s the best of life!
There on the pitch Everything is possible Problems disappear We exceed the limits We become invincible!
After great sorrows It’s here I express myself, Be it joy or sadness Ahead we go ….
Nobody can imagine The magic of it all The celebration when we score Or we defend a goal Football is life, it´s unexplained love!
Old Trafford, Rodrigo Moreira
I want to go home To Man.United To see Red Devils play I'm so excited
Red and White fill my soul Like the players fill the pitch I'm always with you And I want to see Matic
Pogba has the penalties Rashford finishes the plays Every player works together To make Old Trafford the best place
In this theatre of dreams Magic happens in every game We rock, we rule, we conquer Victory is our only aim.
Flowers, Sara Fidalgo
Giving a flower It’s more than a gesture, We can feel the power under each petal
Enchant and shine They are pure art, The symbol of beauty And of a fresh start
Of comfort and happiness A flower’s like a friend It listens to me And stays with me till the end
They have no mouth, but seem to speak They have no eyes, but seem to see They have no ears, but seem to hear Among flowers I’d like to be.
Nature, Sofia Santos You look up, and you see blue, the glow, the clouds that flow; you look down, and you see brown, a sprout, a leaf, a flower bloom my heart will swoon…
Sometimes, like a masterpiece, all the colours mix a work in progress, a puzzle, nature showing all its tricks.
There’s a heart down deep A scalding, burning, angry heart and veins and blood and life So let’s play our part let’s just be smart and respect our planet from the start. Nature I like the scenery The blue sky and the sea I like the dreamy landscapes of the rivers And the rows of imposing clouds in the sea.
The paths I’ve traced, Tânia Alves I’m a travelling woman Made a lot of discoveries And at every place I went I created new memories Riding everywhere around Living the best life I please Doing the best I can As long as I run from the deep freeze If I could touch the sky Do you think time would stop? If I close my eyes Do you think the water would drop? The miles of land I made Showed me what I can do But I still have no clue If my heart will find you.
Trust, Telma Esteves
Trust… something complicated Something that people put to test But it can be forever gone If you don’t give it your best Trust …something amazing Something that people really want But it can be fast destroyed If you act nonchalant Trust…maybe it isn’t difficult It’s just telling the truth And never hide anything Of what our minds produce
Nature II, Yangrong Zhu
Let us slow down And calmly Let´s hear The sound of nature.
The songs of the spring birds The summer frogs The autumn unrest And the silence of winter the unique melody of nature.
Nature is a song If we don´t protect it She will punish us If we love her She will sing for me The most beautiful songs in the world So what will our choice be?
