Reading makes immigrants of us all. It takes us away from home, but more important, it finds homes for us everywhere. JEAN RHYS

Foreword

Becoming WordsWise Knowing how to read, interpret, write and communicate are increasingly important skills in this information age in which we live. Reading not only helps us to develop vocabulary, but also enables us to construct meanings and understand both the world around us and our inner selves. As we read, we expose ourselves to new worlds and ideas, to different cultures and perspectives. A good reader will be a good communicator, more imaginative and able to understand the others. With this project, we wanted students to overcome their dislike of reading, their fear of expressing themselves, the lack of vocabulary and fluency. We introduced students to texts of English-speaking authors, we shared and worked on texts written by Portuguese, French, Italian and Polish authors. However, we did not limit ourselves to reading and trying to interpret the texts in a conventional way: we challenged students to own those texts, reinterpret stories and present them creatively using a wide range of digital tools. Finally we got the students to create their own texts: texts of opinion, short stories, collaborative stories, poems. Here is the result of one of those challenges. Students from all the partner countries and different age groups came together to create these stories. Hope you will enjoy them! THE TEACHERS

STORY 1 Part 1: PORTUGAL, Jardim de Infância do Centro Escolar da Sé - sala 2- BRAGANÇA Once upon a time there was a book that was in the library. One person picked it up, read it and took it home. At home, the book was placed in the bedroom, but, as it was a magic book, it flew out of the window. It flew sky up and went into space, where it saw a rocket with astronauts.

An astronaut opened the door of the rocket and the book came in. The astronaut took the book, opened it and stars sprang out from it.

Part 2: PORTUGAL, 3rd grade of EB1/PEC da Nazaré, FUNCHAL THE NEWEST TECH & GEAR OF 2019 FOR YOUR NEXT OUTDOOR ADVENTURE

The astronaut was amazed!! He closed the book very quickly and hid it from the other two astronauts who were with him in the rocket. He went to his bed and opened it again very slowly and tried to read that magic book.

But as soon as he opened the book stars sprang out of it again, and again, and again….and one of the stars, a very very shiny one, stayed close to the astronaut, as if it was trying to talk, to say something…and suddenly something amazing happened…. The astronaut touched the very shiny star!!

Part 3: POLAND, ZSO Nr 1 STO – WARSAW The very shiny star flashed and asked the astronaut what planet he came from and what kind of creatures lived there. The astronaut told the star a bit about people living on Earth, their traditions and customs. It was around Christmas, so the astronaut tried to explain the star what Santa Claus is and why children dream about presents for Christmas. And why this night is so magical ... And why children's dreams should come true …

THE NEWEST TECH & GEAR OF 2019 FOR YOUR NEXT OUTDOOR ADVENTURE

The star listened and listened to him … Suddenly it disappeared and everything went dark. There were no stars around the astronaut. He was looking for them but couldn’t find any in the dark. He looked out of the window and suddenly saw a bunch of glowing and shining stars. The huge golden comet. The stars were flying to the Earth that looked like a green-blue ball. The astronaut was not sure but it seemed to him these stars were carrying colorful gifts for children.

Part 4: FRANCE, classe de 3ème Collège Jules Hoffmann, THE NEWEST TECH & GEAR OF 2019 STRASBOURG FOR YOUR NEXT OUTDOOR ADVENTURE STORY 1 The star arrived in Strasbourg. It went to Du Chateaux’s library and it saw a shiny and beautiful Christmas tree. The star landed on the top of the tree and the library immediately took off and went into space . The stars met the old astronaut . They came into the library . The original star talked with them . An astronaut touched the star, suddenly all the library illuminated . They arrived into a dark room, and, back to the desk , they found a sleepy man. It was the director and he was dead …

Part 5: PORTUGAL, Escola Gonçalves Zarco, MADEIRA The poor Director had died because he wasn’t wearing a space suit. The stars looked at him and felt guilty. They had been the ones who had taken the library to outer space, and in doing so had caused his death. Shame on them! To fix it they agreed to reverse it. It was easy for them. After all, they were magic! The shiny star reached out the window and with the tip of one of its rays gathered a bit of comet dust, which, as you know, has extreme healing powers. It’s so potent that it can bring the dead back to life! Not wasting any time, they sprinkled the Director with it and before he could die again, they magically transported him back to earth. He was a tad confused, but at least he was alive. The shiny star then turned to the astronaut and asked him (well she didn’t really speak, she used telepathy - you know, brain talk!) if he wanted to join them in the adventure of a lifetime. You can guess his answer, right? I mean, DUUUH! you’re in outer space, stars are talking to you, they have just brought someone back to life, are you really going to tell them no? Heck, no! You’re jumping in and going all the way! Adventure, here you come! well... or so he thought…

Part 6: PORTUGAL, Escola Secundária Emídio Garcia, THE NEWEST TECH & GEAR OF 2019 BRAGANÇA, 11th graders FOR YOUR NEXT OUTDOOR ADVENTURE STORY 1 He was getting ready for the most incredible and decisive adventure of his life while the star was staring at him. Through telepathy the star asked him to give her a name. He decided to call her Shiny. Over the time they noticed that what they were feeling for each other was more than friendship. One day, the star and the astronaut were in his rocket admiring the starry sky when they saw a shooting star and decided to make a wish. Little did they know that both wishes were the same – A KISS. The astronaut started staring at the star and at the same time they were approaching each other until they kissed slowly, intensely and passionately.

When they opened their eyes the star had turned into a beautiful and angelic woman. A few days later, the star was still human so they decided to visit her family to ask for help. When they arrived to the star’s homeland she went home and when her parents opened the door they didn’t recognize the star. “It’s me, I am your fifth daughter.” “What do you mean?” “I fell in love with this man, we kissed and then I became human and lost my powers.” Her oldest sister, who was a member of the council of stars, was listening to the conversation and told the other members what was going on. One week later, the Shiny received a letter from the council to go to a trial where she had to take a decision: become a star again and never talk to humans anymore or stay as a human being, consequently losing her powers and never being able to come home again.

Part 7: ITALY, IC Largo San Pio V, ROME THE NEWEST TECH & GEAR OF 2019 FOR YOUR NEXT OUTDOOR ADVENTURE STORY 1 Shiny was very undecided she felt in her heart her strong love for the astronaut, but she couldn't imagine her life without her friends stars and her parents. "What should I do?", She kept repeating ... Although she hadn't made a decision yet, she felt his powers vanishing, she was very sad. At a certain point the astronaut's room passes through an indistinguishable light of council's stars. They refused to wait any longer and declared they wanted to take Shiny with them. They changed the girl into a star and left without leaving time for the fragile girl to say goodbye to the astronaut. In a climax of suffering Shiny burst into tears, realizing that she couldn't do anything ... While the star was desperate in the star-ship the boy was enraged, he decided to go and get his beloved. He stole a NASA spacecraft and started to follow them. Unfortunately, the young man bumped into an asteroid, which pierced the glass of the spacecraft and the air began to fail ... But the astronaut was too determined and decided to speed up. With the last breath in his lungs he was able to get to Shiny but that was the end of his life ... She was petrified ... She knew she couldn't do anything because as a punishment the healing powers had been removed from all the stars, so she simply said these words: "My love, I've known you for so little but I thought our love could last for so long, I will never forget the good times we spent together, and now that I feel too guilty I will stay with you forever…”

Part 8: PORTUGAL, Escola Secundária Emídio Garcia, THE NEWEST TECH & GEAR OF 2019 BRAGANÇA, 10th graders FOR YOUR NEXT OUTDOOR ADVENTURE STORY 1 Shiny held him dearly and wept. Yes, she wept. As many other stars do, sad because they cannot join all those loved ones on Earth. Or do you think it’s just us, staring in awe at the starry sky, admiring that beauty and wondering what it might be like to be up there? No, stars do just the same. They see us and envy us our lives full of adventure and emotions. They sometimes fall in love with some of us and they wish they could communicate with us, touch us, share some of their magic. But as they cannot come to Earth unless they become shooting stars and die and not many of us become astronauts they are condemned to be alone. Why is it that every morning, if you wake up early enough, you see everything covered in tiny dew drops? Those are their tears. It’s their earthly version of their magic dust. As for Shiny she’s still holding her lover and getting brighter every moment. Look up tonight and maybe you’ll find her.

STORY 2 Part 1: PORTUGAL, Jardim de Infância do Centro Escolar da Sé - sala 2- BRAGANÇA Once upon a time there was a book that was in the library. One person picked it up, read it and took it home. At home, the book was placed in the bedroom, but, as it was a magic book, it flew out of the window. It flew sky up and went into space, where it saw a rocket with astronauts.

An astronaut opened the door of the rocket and the book came in. The astronaut took the book, opened it and stars sprang out from it.

Part 2: PORTUGAL, 3rd grade of EB1/PEC da Nazaré, FUNCHAL THE NEWEST TECH & GEAR OF 2019 FOR YOUR NEXT OUTDOOR ADVENTURE STORY 1 The astronaut was amazed!! STORY 2

The very shiny star flew towards the Earth. Suddenly aliens appeared on its way and then they got ahead the star. A furious galactic race started…

Part 4: FRANCE, classe de 3ème, Collège Jules Hoffmann, STRASBOURG The aliens found the star very shiny and they tried to take it. A galactic race started between the aliens and the star. They failed to take it because it was very fast and lit more and more up to the point that they thought they were blind. Still, the aliens succeeded in touching it. The star continued to grow up until a light came out from its center. Then, it disintegrated itself creating a shiny stars' rain from which a planet was born.

Part 5: PORTUGAL, Escola Gonçalves Zarco, MADEIRA

STORY 2

Part of the alien fleet had been instantaneously destroyed by the star’s bright light and the rest had fled back into deep space. Back on earth everyone was oblivious as to how close they had come to be exterminated. They were just focusing on the new planet and puzzling over the fact that Earth hadn’t been destroyed in the process of its formation. It was fairly similar to our moon, with tons of craters, a grey colour and a spherical shape. Nonetheless it was notably bigger with a radius of 2500 km. It really seemed like another moon! After this new planet was formed scientists (astronomers, astrophysicists, etc.) from all over the world organised and gathered at an international convention on Washington DC, where NASA is based. There was a big discussion about this celestial body whether it was actually a planet. Many hypothesis were put forward and discussed, however everyone came to an agreement that it was in fact a Moon, since it had a clear and stable orbit around our planet. Earth had a new Moon! News spread around the world very quickly and the shock waves were enormous. The world was astonished! Various studies were made about the new Earth’s natural satellite and many probes were sent to space to explore and investigate it. A few months later NASA and ESA decided it was time and there were conditions to launch the second mission with the purpose of landing on the moon, but this time on a different one. The Moon had been called “Casario” and the new project’s name was “Apollai”. This name was given due to its resemblance with the “Apollo” mission’s name. This all was happening in the year of 2019, exactly 50 years after the mission Apollo 11 had taken place and had lead Neil Armstrong to be the first man to step on the moon. As a result the moon landing was taking place on the 20th of July just like 50 years ago. The world was so wrapped up in this new Moon that it had forgotten about the star rain that had originated it in the first place. But now that they were sending astronauts to the new Moon they would be reminded of it. Especially because a surprise awaited them there….

Part 6: PORTUGAL, Escola Secundária Emídio Garcia, THE NEWEST TECH & GEAR OF 2019 BRAGANÇA, 11th graders FOR YOUR NEXT OUTDOOR ADVENTURE STORY 1 The stars were still falling, filling the sky with colours and brightness. One of the stars seemed suspicious… It was big, colossal and made a loud sound when it crashed. An astronaut named Maria das Dores and her friend Joaquim, who was a journalist, decided to go to the crash site.

When they arrived, they found… a BROKEN UFO with 5 aliens. The aliens told the humans that an astronaut was stuck in the original moon with THE BOOK, from where the stars had come out from. The 5 aliens of the spaceship, PINTINHO, EXPOSTINHO, PIREX, CÁCÁ e GUIGUI, wanted to help “Casario” because without the stars of the book it would be destroyed. The aliens told NASA to redirect the mission “Apollai” to the original moon, to save the astronaut and pick up the book with the stars in it!!!!!

Part 7: ITALY, IC Largo San Pio V, ROME So Nasa redirected1 the mission towards the STORY original moon but it was very difficult

because the stars were still falling. They tried to dodge them: the first star came towards them but the spaceship succeeded in dodging it by lowering itself. They didn’t see immediately the second star and this came from the right but the spaceship rotated and it succeeded to dodge it once more. The third star appeared in front of them and even if they tried to dodge it this time they did not succeed and the star destroyed half of the ship. An astronaut fell off, another one tried to take him but the astronaut was dying and he only had a few minutes left to save the planet Earth. The astronaut told his companion: ”No time, don’t worry about me. Go and save planet Earth”. His companion with tears in his eyes left him and continued the mission. A spaceship arrived to help them. When the spaceship arrived, the people on board asked him if they needed medical treatment, food, water…… They could save their friends, but they said that there was nothing to be done. Then they asked if they could travel on the spaceship because theirs was broken.

Part 8: PORTUGAL, Escola Secundária Emídio Garcia, BRAGANÇA, 10th graders THE NEWEST TECH & GEAR OF 2019 FOR YOUR NEXT OUTDOOR ADVENTURE STORY 1 Everyone on Earth wanted to help the poor astronaut stuck on the moon and they also wanted to save the book and put an end to that strange star rain. It was such a weird unheard phenomenon! They had heard about frogs pouring down from the sky or fish or golf balls, even, and, of course, the English had that saying about “raining cats and dogs”, but stars?! Suddenly something good came out of it all: the whole world seemed to be united in one purpose - to rescue the astronaut and the book! Conflicts were forgotten, wars seemed to be in “pause” mood and everybody contributed their bit to a new successful mission. All the experts and scientists all over the world were working together to accomplish that common goal. And they succeeded! They finally brought back the astronaut and recovered the book. After much discussion it was decided the book should be kept in a shrine until we could figure out what would happen if someone opened it again. It was puzzling: all those stars coming out of it had been a beautiful sight that had then caused chaos but in the end it had contributed to the union of all nations on Earth. Well, nothing is entirely good or bad, is it?

Part 3: POLAND, ZSO Nr 1 STO – WARSAW STORY 1 The astronaut was sucked into the star. Now, he was inside the Star World.

There all the people were star-shaped. They had everything in the shape of a star: heads, eyes, ears. The houses and trees were star-shaped too. Stars were everywhere! The astronaut was different. He didn't have anything in this shape. He was sad.

He looked around. He asked one girl about the place he was in. She didn't understand him. So she took “The Human Dictionary”. And she said in the Human language: 'We are in the Star World'.

The astronaut said 'Thank you!' and continued his trip. He saw a door in the shape of a star. He walked through it. It turned out that he was back to his universe with1the rocket and his astronaut friends. STORY But he didn't stay long because the Star drew him back to the Star World. As soon as he appeared there, he was arrested and sent to a prison by the Star King. He was sad and lonely in prison. One day he had a visitor. It was the girl he had met and talked to the first time in the Star World. She promised to help him. They spent a lot of time together and liked each other very much. They got married. He saw her as a beautiful girl not as a star-shaped girl. During the wedding reception the astronaut talked a lot with the Star King. They started to know and respect one another. The astronaut showed the Star King his universe,Â the rocket and his astronaut friends. He also told himÂ about his adventure with the Star which drew him back to the Star World. The Star King said that the power of stars is stronger than the power ofÂ the human universe. Suddenly, all the lights went off. It was completely dark.

Part 4: FRANCE, classe de 3ème, Collège Jules Hoffmann, STRASBOURG STORY 1 Everything went dark… The astronaut woke up. He noticed that he had the book in his hands and that he was floating in space. He thought that it was a dream… but it wasn’t, it was real. He flew back into the rocket and hid the book in his wardrobe. One week passed and nothing special happened… Until, one night, the astronaut had a weird dream about the star world. They were calling him for help because their world was being destroyed. He saw the star king who was trying to tell him something but the astronaut woke up. Suddenly he saw the magic book open in front of him. It was calling him. He got up and started reading when suddenly he appeared in the star world. It was falling apart. He was surprised since he thought everything was just a dream. The astronaut found the star king who told him that he should’ve read the end of the sentence but…

Part 5 PORTUGAL, Escola Gonรงalves Zarco, MADEIRA

STORY 1

THE NEWEST TECH & GEAR OF 2019 FOR YOUR NEXT OUTDOOR ADVENTURE

The astronaut was just a man, what could he do? As soon as he was saying these words the Star King began to fade away. The astronaut was confused, scared. What could he do? He needed to think, he needed space to breathe. Determined to find a solution, he put on his space suit, grabbed his book and went outside. Maybe being outside would help him think clearer. Floating around his spaceship he opened the book. To his surprise it was blank. No words, no pictures, just pitch black pages.

He puzzled over it for a while and then decided to use his yellow marker and drew a big, bright star on one of the pages. At first nothing happened, but then, ever so slowly, the star he had drawn began to glow. Feeling he had found the answer he kept turning the pages and adding stars everywhere. The glow grew bigger and bigger, the stars started pulsing as if they were alive, and right there and then his mind was filled with images of his life in the star universe as if little by little all the pieces of that magical world were being restored. Was it really so?

Part 6: PORTUGAL, Escola Secundária Emídio Garcia, BRAGANÇA, 11th graders After one day of drawing and trying to figure out what was happening with the Star World, the astronaut drew a star where a magic mirror appeared. It showed him a beautiful star, the brightest star of all. He recognized the star… it was his wife, and she was a prisoner of the Star King. The astronaut panicked and he didn’t know what was happening and how to solve that situation. After much thought, he realized that the end of the Star World was only a way to catch his attention so that he returned to the Star World for the King to get his revenge by abducting the greatest treasure of his life: his wife. Should he ask his friends for help? Should he do it alone?

That night, he dreamed again about that magic and magnificent world, and this time the Star King talked to the astronaut and said that if the day after he did not show up, his wife would be forever his prisoner. When he woke up, he decided to call his friends astronauts to help him fight the dark side of the Star World. After planning an attack tactic, they opened the book and entered the magic mirror to go to the Star World and then something happened…

Part 7: ITALY, IC Largo San Pio V, ROME

Entering the world of this magical book, they decided to devise a plan to find out what the enemies’ plan was. STORY 1 They secretly entered through a locked door with cast steel grids, they broke off plans to destroy the entire planet, so they quickly returned to their own world. Finding themselves thus in space they decided to bring their drawings to the king Stella who, seeing such a thing decided to keep his citizens safe, acting in the best way. They decided to let every family into their home.

Part 8: PORTUGAL, Escola Secundária Emídio Garcia, BRAGANÇA, 10th graders

But meanwhile there was still the problem of the astronaut’s star wife, who had been made captive. It seemed impossible to reach her, let alone save her and return alive.. The astronaut thought about it all the time but he seemed unable to come up with any good plan. He felt powerless … until, one day, maybe like Newton when that apple fell or Archimedes when he was bathing, an idea struck! The answer was the book! Everything that had happened had been related to the book, so the book would also be the solution. That night the astronaut had a restless sleep and he dreamt of that magical book. In his dream we was reading it again, flicking through the pages when he realised that the story didn’t seem to have an end. Some pages were missing, some sentences were blurred, the last one incomplete… And in his dream the astronaut wrote the perfect ending! And, as it was a magic book, it all came true!

Part 3: PORTUGAL, STEE - Special Needs Students, MADEIRA

STORY As the astronaut1 touched

the star, he felt his body getting heavier and something strange happening. His arms became two shiny wings. Then he realised he was taken to the fantasy world.

In that fantastic world, the astronaut saw princesses, princes, toys, children and animals. They called him to join them and they played, and played and playedâ&#x20AC;Ś Then, the astronaut got so tired that he fell asleep and began to dreamâ&#x20AC;Ś

Part 4: FRANCE, classe de 3ème, Collège Jules Hoffmann, STRASBOURG STORY As he woke up, he1was falling into a huge hole. He saw a lot of things moving in front of him. And at one moment, he saw a shiny door, he opened it and discovered a world with mountains of candies and clouds of cotton candy. He walked in this world and far away from him, he saw another door, he opened it too and arrived in an aquatic world with beautiful turtles and big dolphins. Then, he was entrapped in a storm and absorbed by another door. He was still wet but he was not in the aquatic world anymore, he was now back in space but without any flying suit. He could not breathe, he was agonising, he thought about his family, his friends, his daughter... when he thought that he was going to die, he saw a door far away from him and started to run to catch it but the door was very far... eventually, he caught it and opened it and discovered two enormous shelves as far as the eyes can see. He started to walk between these two shelves and saw a big and shiny book.…

Part 5 PORTUGAL, Escola Gonรงalves Zarco, MADEIRA

STORY It was the Book of1 Lives. Everyone, everything that was living was in

that book. It told the story of everything that had ever happened and pages were continuously being added to it. They contained everything that was happening right now. The Book of Lives held the secrets of the universe in its pages. The astronaut gasped for air. Should he have a peek inside the book? Could he find out more about what was happening to him? He sat for a minute gazing at that big book. Not really wanting to move for fear of what might happen. After some serious inner struggle he decided no man should dare to open that Book. It was far too important. God-like even! So he turned to leave, determined to find his way back to his world, to his ship.

STORY As he was walking1away the shiny star flew to him. He could swear he

heard it giggling as if happy because he had successfully passed its test.Â He smiled, feeling rather proud of himself, and just kept walking till he came across a new door. Without hesitation he reached for the door knob and slowly opened it, half expecting to be launched into some wacky world, but to his surprise, as soon as he crossed the threshold, gravity disappeared and he found himself floating outside his spaceship. Had the adventure ended?

Part 6: PORTUGAL, Escola Secundária Emídio Garcia, BRAGANÇA, 11th graders STORY Of course not. The1book returned to the library. Someone would find

it sooner or later and that person happened to be the astronaut’s sister. She was different from her brother, she was greedier, so she opened the book and the star came out. She touched a particular shiny star. As soon as she touched it she started to elevate without wings. It was the power of the book. Suddenly she noticed that several doors started to appear from thin air. After a while she decided to open the most sparkling one. She was sucked into this new place. It was a somber world.

That place was terrifying. In the background she noticed a chest with a brightening light coming out of it. She came closer and opened it. It was the book again. She knew that she shouldn’t read it, because she had already deduced it as too powerful for a human being to read ... but she did it anyway. What will happen next? Will a grim reaper come after her?

Part 7: ITALY, IC Largo San Pio V, ROME

STORY The book was so1 shiny and so big that she decided to see what was inside. Suddenly she saw a new world full of video games Everything was so different. She didn’t like what she saw But she continued to walk to see all the new things She realized how much the street is full of games and colours Immediately beyond the door, on the left, there was a green cloudshaped bed with a brightly coloured quilt. She suddenly came to a door that said “the end”

She opened the door and woke up from her dream. She thought “ what an amazing trip”.

Part 8: PORTUGAL, Escola Secundária Emídio Garcia, BRAGANÇA, 10th graders STORY And truth is, that1trip had changed her. She had gone into it as a

greedy, over-curious girl who just did as she pleased and she had returned a different person. She had always sought the light, what was brightest, what was best because she was never pleased with anything and she thought she deserved it all. She had chosen the most beautiful doors and what had she found? Just darkness. A somber world. A fake world where only games seemed to be real and no one cared about the others, talked to them, felt for them.
