PRESIDENT’S

MESSAGE Last month I shared thoughts on the various business cases that exist to support supplier diversity and inclusion in Corporate and Government supply chains. The WBENC network is committed to delivering high capacity WBEs for inclusion in these important supply chains, as well as, the supply chains of other women’s businesses. One of the best ways for WBEs to build capacity and expand business connections is to attend and be active in the WBENC National Conference & Business Fair (NCBF) occurring June 25-27, 2013 in Minneapolis, MN. I encourage all of you to plan your participation and take full advantage of the vast opportunities available at the 2013 NCBF as we Join Forces to Succeed Together! WBENC Staff, our RPOs and many committee members have finalized relevant programming and activities for the NCBF. Our Co-Chairs, MN Corporate member base, WBE Host Committee and partner WBDCChicago (& MN office) have taken the lead in ensuring that networking and matchmaking opportunities allow for strong and effective connections. They have, along with our extensive sponsor base, been preparing for delivery of robust workshops that will allow you to focus your involvement throughout the conference on the activities that will best support your needs whether you are attending as a Corporate or Government Member, Regional Partner or other alliance partner or certified WBE. Planning your involvement will be your key to success! Let me assist you in beginning your planning. • First, create your T-A-R-G-E-T contact list. Know your target clients and target industries. A sample of the terrific companies that will be present is listed on the Sponsor page of the conference website. In addition, the exhibitor list will be posted on the site in early June to further help you with your pre-conference strategizing. • Second, more workshops are being offered that address the most important needs of you and your business. Each of the 28 workshops falls into one of three tracks: “Building and Honing Skills,” “Building Business Capacity,” and “Leveraging the Expertise” of the WBENC network. Maximize your conference experience by reviewing the workshop selections prior to the event at www.wbenc.org/wbencconf/ workshops.php to choose those that best align with your goals. I will spend a bit more time on the second step mentioned above. The workshop tracks are designed to provide learning opportunities for all of our constituents.

PREPARE FOR YOUR SUCCESS AT THE NATIONAL CONFERENCE & BUSINESS FAIR AS THE WBENC FAMILY JOINS FORCES TO SUCCEED TOGETHER! a. W hen evaluating sessions in the area of building and honing skills or in building capacity, consider what you should attend to best position your business and advance your goals over the next 12 months. Each session being offered targets “keys to success.” WBEs will focus on topics like understanding strategic advantage and effectively presenting your business. Corporate and Government Members will focus on contemporary best practices and delivering consistent ROI through well run supplier diversity programs. There will also be sessions focused on doing business more effectively through the use of social media tools, building your brand, and enhancing marketing and sales strategies. b. In the leveraging expertise track, you will again want to target the sessions that focus on the industry or industries of most interest to you to know and grow your business. Seek out the innovative “mini-fair” to speak directly with experts in the automotive, pharmaceutical, utilities, energy and retail sectors. Complex business strategies such as developing a joint venture or partnering are more important in some industries than others. Broad issues that impact all businesses on subjects including sustainability or the utilization of advisory boards will be presented. c. F or WBEs searching for ways to further capitalize on their certification, the WBENC Regional Partner Organization (RPO) leaders are offering an amazing session complete with a toolkit and invaluable business development advice. d. Finally, for those seeking to expand internationally as well as those who have already made that leap, there are beneficial sessions designed by our Global Committee working together with our MOU partner, WEConnect International. I am EXCITED that we are demonstrating how we can Join Forces to Succeed Together through collaboratively designed interactions, involvement of our RPO leaders, offering a platform for WBE to WBE connections, and discussion of strategies that support growth and strong business practices in the public, private and international marketplaces. Begin your conference planning today at www.wbenc. org/wbencconf. I look forward to seeing you in Minneapolis as we Join Forces to Succeed Together.

Best, Pamela Prince-Eason WBENC President and CEO

TOP CORPORATION BEST PRACTICES: MACY’S

Macy’s Inc., a new recipient of the 2012 WBENC Top Corporation for Women’s Business Enterprises (WBEs) award, is passionate in its commitment to women’s business development. From their most senior leadership and down, Macy’s commitment to drive women’s business growth is evident throughout the organization.

Terry J. Lundgren, CEO, Chairman of the Board, and President, Macy’s, Inc., conveys a strong message that Macy’s is dedicated to supplier diversity. He recently served four years as the Chairman of the National Minority Supplier Development Council, and subsequently created a Diversity Committee comprised of the company’s Executive Committee, including Lundgren and key senior leadership. This reinforces the retailer’s holistic approach to diversity at Macy’s. Howard Thompson, VP of Purchasing and Supplier Development and Shawn Outler, Group VP of Multicultural Vendor Development, Leased Businesses, and Vendor Collaboration, drive women’s business development at Macy’s. Thompson covers the “non-retail” side of the business such as transportation, IT, facilities, construction, and marketing. Outler’s responsibilities include the sourcing of women’s businesses that offer product for resale across all categories in apparel and hard goods, i.e. beauty, fashion and home products. To develop these women suppliers, she authored the groundbreaking “Workshop at Macy’s” that each year selects from thousands of applicants, approximately 20 women and minority business owners to participate in a week-long immersion in the business of fashion. With the aim of mentoring and fostering growth with up-and-coming minority and women-owned businesses, The Workshop at Macy’s was created to help these enterprises achieve and sustain positive and successful retail relationships. This industry first initiative began in the spring of 2011, completed its third year this month. Considered a “game changer,” the goal of the annual program is to help create a pipeline of viable enterprises that will grow to become successful partners within Macy’s own vendor community and the retail industry at large.

“ This program was created to develop minority and women-owned businesses that make great products, but need real-world knowledge and experience in the arena of a large scale nationwide retailer. This program helps reinforce Macy’s long-standing commitment to vendor diversity and to providing customers with unique goods and services that meet their lifestyle,” Outler said. The Workshop at Macy’s is a four-and-one-half-day intensive training course developed by a consortium of experts from Macy’s Learning & Development, Macy’s Multicultural Merchandising and Vendor Development, Babson College, the nation’s leading business school for entrepreneurship, and with select Macy’s merchants and vendors. The specially designed business development curriculum allows selected participants to collaborate with fellow aspiring vendors, gain access to industry experts and solicit one-on-one business coaching. The course work includes classes on merchandising and assortment planning, marketing, EDI (Electronic Data Interchange), financial management, and access to capital. Macy’s is proactive in advancing women’s businesses through the buying process. This starts with the commitment of business leaders along with the supplier diversity teams. Thompson and Outler, along with buyers from selected departments, attend the WBENC National Conference and Business Fair.

“ If a WBE wants to meet a buyer in IT, in most cases we are able to make an introduction on the spot,” Thompson said. “We typically bring 10 -15 representatives from across the company, including Bloomingdale’s, which is owned by Macy’s, Inc.” It was during last year’s conference trade show that Cathi Coan, President and CEO Techway Services Inc., and a WBE Star, would meet Thompson, who put her in contact with the IT decision makers that led to several subsequent business awards to purchase Macy’s retired IT equipment. This personal approach is also reflected in Macy’s efficient yet hands-on process for connecting buyers to WBEs throughout the year. Buyers access potential suppliers through the supplier diversity team, where a dedicated team member researches the WBE on WBENC Link, circles back to the buyer on their needs and presents the top candidates. With clear expectations set for women’s and diverse spend, buyers can track their progress online on a monthly basis.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT FILLING THE PIPELINE AND GROWING CAPACITY Macy’s works to develop relationships with WBEs, provides guidance on how to sell their products and services, and where possible, expands the business opportunities. On the non-retail side, it starts with the company identifying a specific need for a product or service in a particular area to be sourced by a buyer. The Supplier Diversity team assists the buyer in identifying potential WBEs to be included in the bid process. To expand its base and relationship with prospective suppliers, Macy’s also holds Vendor Fairs throughout the year. There, prospective suppliers meet buyers and explore potential areas of business opportunity. Last year Macy’s held a construction vendor fair in New York City for some 80 suppliers. This year it is planning six events, including a recent Marketing focused event attended by 20 potential suppliers. In the bidding process Macy’s buyers vet all potential bidders to ensure they can meet its product and service requirements. Once the suppliers prove themselves in one region, they may have the opportunity to broaden that reach.

“ At this point buyers have formed a partnership with the WBE – and will ask them if they can scale up,” Thompson added. Julie Copeland, President and CEO of Arbill, Vice Chair of the Women’s Enterprise Forum, and former WBE Star, started with a specific contract for medical supplies and quickly grew to become a national supplier of safety goods for Macy’s. Jayne Millard, CEO, of Turtle & Hughes, a distributor of Electrical and Industrial equipment, started with a discreet contract and is now advancing Macy’s sustainability program by relamping stores with energy efficient LED technology across the country. In marketing communications, Macy’s works with Cincinnati-based Sanger & Eby, a WBENC-certified company focused on talent lifecycle communications, employer branding, and employee engagement. In addition to the Macy’s, Inc. corporate website, Sanger & Eby designs and develops the Workshop at Macy’s and Macy’s Diversity Leadership websites. Partners Lisa Sanger and Donna Eby are becoming more actively involved in WBENC as well.

“ We see the value of diversity spring to life in these actual success stories,” Thompson said. “They make Macy’s a stronger company and a better source of choice for our customers.” Outler emphasizes that Macy’s commitment to diversifying its vendor mix is a win-win, saying, “We find talented new vendors with quality, well-priced merchandise that satisfies our customers and in turn those vendors see their businesses grow, thereby allowing us to foster business development in the growing communities we serve.” For more information, see www.macysinc.com

TOP CORPORATION BEST PRACTICES: WALMART Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., which was named to the 2012 WBENC’s Top Corporations for Women’s Business Enterprises (WBEs), has made a bold commitment to women’s business development: $20 billion will be sourced with women-owned businesses for its U.S. business over five years through 2016.

This pledge, WalMart’s Global Women’s Economic Empowerment Initiative announced in September 2011, is part of a far-reaching strategic plan designed to empower women around the world. The initiative includes large internal and external goals. WalMart will provide more training, market access and career opportunities to nearly one million women, many on farms and in factories around the globe. Additionally, WalMart is working to increase women and minority representation among its largest professional service firms and merchandise suppliers. To achieve its goals, WalMart is tapping into the external expertise of its supply partners, related Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and its Women-Owned Business Advisory Council, which includes WBENC’s President and CEO Pamela Prince-Eason.

“ WalMart is seeking to purposefully change lives,” said Michael Byron, Senior Director, Supplier Diversity. “We are developing women’s businesses because they meet our needs with innovation and agility. But we also know that they are growing faster and are twice as likely as other businesses to hire women in management. Those women will invest in their communities and encourage economic growth.” MIKAELA WARDLAW LEMMON Senior Director for Women’s Economic Empowerment WalMart

“ More than 60 percent of our customers are women,” added MiKaela Wardlaw Lemmon, Senior Director for Women’s Economic Empowerment. “Purchasing more products from women-owned businesses is the right and smart thing to do for our business.” Byron and Lemmon are actively engaging WalMart’s key buyers and stakeholders across the company in the company’s goals for women-owned and diverse business development. They are raising awareness about new tools and resources that enable buyers to pursue those goals in their day-to-day work. These tools and resources are delivered through a suite of seven “solutions.” Taken together, they form a seamless process connecting the buyers with promising WBEs, supporting their mutual success and making WalMart a stronger company to meet its customers’ needs.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT SEVEN SOLUTIONS FOR WBE DEVELOPMENT These solutions include a scorecard and dashboard to identify WBEs and track their progress; a strategy for identifying and vetting WBEs; a “Supplier Diversity Playbook” providing contact information on the Supplier Diversity Team; a Supplier Academy that onboards WBEs and supports their growth; a Joint Business Plan that sets 12-18 month goals for a selected 50 women suppliers; a supply chain to help small businesses partner together to serve WalMart; and financing options to help them access capital for capacity building. TO HIGHLIGHT A FEW: To create a scorecard and dashboard on WBE and MBE progress, the team at WalMart wanted to present data in ways that were meaningful and easy to use. This was accomplished by developing a diversity application for a report already in use. Now, this Diversity Terms Report allows buyers to review supplier details including sales, cost, as well as gender and ethnicity of ownership. This information is backed up with an annual packet of new and existing suppliers. To prevent suppliers from falling through the cracks in the hiring process, the team developed a dashboard that tracks where each women’s and diverse business is in the continuum of competing and winning a contract.

MICHAEL BYRON Senior Director Supplier Diversity WalMart

Once promising suppliers are identified, they are invited to WalMart’s Supplier Diversity Summits. These feature WalMart leaders or outside speakers, such as Karen Mills, Administrator of the Small Business Administration, and are often focused on merchandise specialties. The Summit educates attendees on how to do business with WalMart, provides matchmaking meetings with WalMart buyers and sourcing partners, and creates networking opportunities among WBEs.

Once WBEs have secured a commitment, WalMart’s Supplier Diversity Academy onboards them. Then WalMart quickly builds a strategy to create an ongoing lifecycle relationship with the supplier. “We might visit that supplier, and provide them with insight on what our needs will be in the next year to 18 months. This creates transparency and sets expectations for the relationship,” Byron says. WalMart will also help mitigate any risk or difficulties that a supplier might have.

“ If a supplier is not doing as well as they should be, we will have the conversations with the business and the supplier to help redirect the relationship to a successful track,” he adds. Buyer-supplier partnerships are also encouraged by e-learning modules to educate the suppliers on what it takes to do business with WalMart, and the buyers on what they need to know about women and diverse suppliers.

“ We represent the largest retail supply chain in this country,” Byron concluded. “It is imperative for us to be a convening force for the development of women’s and diverse businesses.” For WalMart, that also means serving its customers. By empowering women and encouraging their business growth, the company is certain that it will deliver the products, services and experience to help its customers save money and live better. GOVERNMENT SPOTLIGHT THE NEW ChallengeHER CAMPAIGN Our federal government spends over $100B annually on contracts awarded to small businesses. Their commitment to working with small businesses increases the firms’ revenues and creates jobs, fueling our economy. As a result, the Obama administration and the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) have remained dedicated to changing the federal contracting culture and process to provide access and remove barriers for small, women-owned, minority, and disadvantaged businesses. On April 23, 2013, Marie Johns, SBA Deputy Administrator, introduced new efforts to include women-owned small businesses (WOSB) in the federal procurement process during the WOSB Opportunity Forum. The purpose of the ChallengeHER initiative is to leverage the resources of the SBA, WIPP (Women Impacting Public Policy) and American Express OPEN to promote the current WOSB Federal Contracting Program, which will result in more WOSBs entering the federal supply chain. In the coming months, the SBA will be holding ChallengeHER events in the following cities: Phoenix, Seattle, New Orleans, Denver, Atlanta, San Francisco and New York. There will be matchmaking opportunities for WOSBs to connect with decision-makers, which will increase the potential for procurement officers to select a WOSB for their contract needs. There will also be training on the System for Award Management (SAM) registration, which is the database contracting officers use to identify potential vendors. Attendees will also receive an overview on the eligibility requirements for the WOSB Contracting Program set aside opportunities. FOCUS ON THE FORUM: PATTI MASSEY, PRESIDENT, MYCA: GROUP Patti Massey, President, MYCA: group, is intimate with her brand: “MYCA: Maximizing Your Company’s Assets” which include the utilization of technology innovations to create solutions in diverse fields. The organization that inspired the founding of MYCA:handling, Procter & Gamble, is a soon to be benefactor of a recently enhanced material management solution which was collaboratively created with MYCA’s largest client, Sonoco Products, and Tier 1 supplier of P&G. Patti Massey’s business career began with a lemonade stand at age eight, and quickly escalated into manufacturing and distribution of potholders at nine. Massey has risen in ranks throughout her aspiring professional career and is President of the MYCA group of companies, with activities as diverse as managing the repair and maintenance of fork-lift truck fleets, to providing on-line certification for Los Angeles Fire Department EMTs. ‘MYCA: Maximizing Your Company’s Assets’ is more than a clever name; it is foundational to MYCA’s service offerings which effectively utilize technology innovation in the learning and asset management fields. MYCA: group includes MYCA:handling, an end-to-end provider of material handling solutions for manufacturing and distribution environments, and MYCA:learning which helps companies maximize their human talent assets by using technology to analyze performance gaps and create highly engaging and interactive e-learning courses focused on improving employee performance.

PATTI MASSEY President MYCA: group

Aligned with the nature of a true entrepreneur of seeing a need, identifying an opportunity and creating a solution, Massey founded MYCA:handling to address a need expressed by Procter & Gamble for a supplier to provide a national material handling business solution. MYCA:handling was established in 2004 and became a WBENC-Certified Women’s Business Enterprise in 2010. Procter & Gamble was both the inspiration and first client of MYCA:handling. Sonoco Packaging, a Tier 1 supplier of P&G, is a large manufacturer of industrial and consumer packaging products in the United States, Europe, Canada and other countries. They were actively seeking a solution for materials management that MYCA offered and following a strong recommendation from P&G, signed up with MYCA on the spot in 2006. Sonoco was simultaneously launching their Supplier Diversity initiative to identify and develop partnerships with qualified minority and women-owned suppliers. The business resulted in a long term and beneficial alliance between both companies. MYCA:handling’s revenue doubled in their first year of business with Sonoco, and today, provides 12 dedicated resources to the account. Sonoco is MYCA:handling’s largest client.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT The benefits of developing and leveraging relationships within supply chain partners continues to impact the innovation of MYCA:handling and provide enhanced solutions for all of their clients. Working in partnership with Sonoco Products, MYCA recently developed a sophisticated and robust fleet management system that measures the “actual after installation” cost to operate equipment, parts and servicing expenses and streamlines processes, all while lowering operating expenses.

“ Sonoco has already realized significant productivity savings by using MYCA’s system. It has been amazing how quickly we are seeing a return on our investment and we look forward to MYCA’s recommendations for further improvements,” said Marc Ensign, Sonoco’s Director of Strategic Sourcing. The new fleet management system has been approved for rollout within P&G. The triad relationship between P&G, MYCA:handling and Sonoco Products within this supply chain has come full circle inspiring development, growth, change, opportunity and beyond. For 20 years, Massey has turned innovative and creative ideas into successful business ventures utilizing the values of WBENC certification: strong relationships, wise counsel and networking opportunities. All aspects of WBENC engagement have given her the confidence to continue to expand and take calculated risks in developing her businesses. Massey is a member of The Women’s Enterprise Forum (The Forum) Leadership Team; chair of The Forum’s marketing committee; an Enterprising Women board member; and a member of the Ohio River Valley Women’s Business Council steering committee. Active participation in the Women Presidents’ Organization (WPO) has enhanced her business acumen and provides a solid sounding board for strategic and tactical decision making. Honorable recognitions include: 2009 Enterprising Woman of the Year; 2012 WBENC WBE Star; and Sonoco 2012 Star Supplier Award. When asked about her biggest insight into her success:

“ Building relationships and helping others led to being selected as a 2012 WBENC Star. This tremendous honor was the highlight of my career and I’d love to help other women-owned businesses benefit from the talented network of successful women in WBENC, WPO and Enterprising Women that I have had the opportunity to build and foster over the past several years,” said Massey. Massey offers sound advice on how WBENC certification, inherent benefits and resources influence achievement:

“ WBENC-Certified businesses, new and veteran, should advance beyond their local communities to the national level where they will be inspired and surrounded by women who are very successful, very motivating, very warm and generous. Establish relationships and partnerships; stay the course; know how to bring your brand across clearly; be familiar with supply chain dynamics. Relationships and networks are irreplaceable resources that help you to figure it out,” said Massey. For more information on MYCA:group, visit www.mycagroup.com

When the two women met, Yue recognized the potential fit and introduced Coche to SCE’s IT Procurement manager. Southern California Edison is known for its longstanding commitment to supplier diversity and providing opportunities for diverse c o n s u l t i n g

business enterprises. In 1979, the utility created its Supplier Diversity program, which has enabled SCE’s competitive small and diverse suppliers to grow, while better serving customers with new and innovative solutions. As one of the few women-owned SAP value-added resellers (VAR) in the U.S., Gravity Pro Consulting is certified as an SAP Gold Partner, the highest tier of SAP’s partners, making Gravity Pro Consulting the only WBENC Certified Women-Owned business with an SAP Gold credential. Two months after Yue and Coche were introduced, SCE began the process of completing its initial contract with Gravity Pro Consulting. A purchase order was issued and finalized soon thereafter. Contracts of this magnitude typically take 24-36 months to bring to fruition. However, a combination of supplier readiness and stellar credentials, along with the ground work previously laid through SCE’s supplier diversity outreach program, contributed to the contract’s prompt execution by aligning with SCE’s goal of

increasing IT procurement with WBENC Certified Women-Owned businesses. Gravity Pro works in collaboration with SAP to fulfill SCE’s needs. SCE maintains the benefits of their negotiated terms and maintenance agreements with SAP. Gravity Pro adds incremental value to the strong relationship SCE enjoys with SAP direct. This initial contract with SCE establishes a stepping stone for Gravity Pro to continue to expand on the opportunity to deliver further value.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT “ As industry-leading companies continue to expand use of diversity suppliers for the value and innovation they provide, SAP is proud to team with Gravity Pro Consulting, an SAP Gold Channel Partner and diversity vendor. Together we bring SAP software-enabled innovation and agility to customers,” states Troy Richardson, Senior Vice President / General Manager, North America Ecosystem & Channels Group at SAP. Coche discovered her enthusiasm for systems design in her native France when she began working as a consultant implementing products from SAP, a global leader in business software. Having served in leadership roles within several organizations, Sylvana’s rapid rise in the business software industry took her around the world, starting with a move to the U.S. in 2001 to manage SAP implementation projects. In 2007, Coche self-founded Gravity Pro Consulting with a laptop and vision of helping companies to excel and better serve their customers. Gravity Pro Consulting became WBENC-certified in 2010. This evolution served as a way of building upon her extensive experience in designing, deploying and supporting advanced SAP solutions. Since its founding, Gravity Pro has earned success working with leading brands all over the world. In addition to her achievement in obtaining SAP Gold Partner status, Coche has realized the value of achieving certification as a WBENC Certified Women-Owned business, starting with her first WBENC West event in 2012. While there, Coche learned how to present her company’s value proposition and statement which are critical when working with supplier diversity professionals. Having worked with many large corporations throughout her career, Sylvana was able to translate her company’s value into needs being sought by Supplier Diversity (SD) organizations. Participation in MatchMaker events helped her to develop skills on how to approach SD Corporations and recognize what they expect from Certified Women-Owned businesses. Supplier Diversity professionals understand the value of WBENC certification and often share relationships where there may be a fit within their networks. Gravity Pro is unique with its qualifications to bring added value to large corporations such as SCE, and looks forward to creating further opportunity as a WBENC Certified Women-Owned business. HOST COMMITTEE PROFILE: MARIE L. O’BRIEN, PRESIDENT and CEO ENTERFORCE, INC. Enterforce, Inc. is a leading resource to Fortune 1000 companies seeking to tap into and manage the nation’s growing market for talent and labor. By streamlining the hiring process for contingent workers such as engineers, IT professionals and administrators, Enterforce enables its clients to better manage their costs and their workforce to strategically meet their future needs.

President and CEO Marie O’Brien – a WBENC-certified Women’s Business Enterprise (WBE) who is also on the Host Committee for the 2013 National Conference & Business Fair, was an early mover into the staffing industry’s delivery channel known as the Managed Services Provider (MSP). When she embarked on Enterforce in 2001, she foresaw the growth potential for the MSP as an independent organization that can deliver and manage a company’s contingent labor workforce in a centralized way. Additionally, by working as an unbiased third party between the corporate client and the staffing companies that supply vetted candidates, Enterforce created a “win-win” for both sides of the talent equation. Today Enterforce serves as a vital connector for staffing companies and major corporations. O’Brien notes that Enterforce perceived this opportunity in the marketplace at a time when “non-employee” workers were becoming an increasingly important segment of the labor force. She saw the need to support corporations in utilizing this workforce efficiently, while meeting consistent standards. MARIE L. O’BRIEN President and CEO Enterforce, Inc.

“ Our rigorous scrutiny and oversight helps our clients with risk mitigation,” O’Brien says. “In fact, our services benefit numerous departments: helping HR with screening and training; enabling Security to know who is in the building; supporting Procurement with contract management; producing a centralized bill for Finance, and ensuring background checks for Legal.”

PRESIDENT’S REPORT Enterforce combines the best of technology, talent acquisition solutions and workforce management experience to accomplish these objectives. It uses technology tools that enable its clients to view, analyze and manage their costs. At the same time, Enterforce places its own expert managers onsite with the client to manage the contingent workers – from onboarding, to administering contracts and compliance, to managing the ebb and flow of worker demand. Major clients that Enterforce services in this way include Harley-Davidson Motor Company, Wisconsin Energy Corporation, and Johnson Controls. Among the staffing companies Enterforce has worked with are WBENC Top Corporation ManpowerGroup, as well as National Conference & Business Fair WBE Co-Chair Artech Information Systems. Over the long term, O’Brien thinks that this collaboration will drive growth in the pool of skilled professionals.

“ It’s anticipated that there will be a 3:1 shortfall in the number of skilled workers by 2025 in the professional, technical and engineering sectors alone,” O’Brien says. “By making hiring more economically viable for corporations, we think we can help correct that imbalance and encourage growth among skilled contingent workers.” To build a talent pipeline, Enterforce runs an internship program for university students, called STARS (Students Taking Active Roles to Succeed). The program creates opportunities for students at Enterforce’s client corporations. Through a variety of university channels, Enterforce pre-screens, selects, and recruits interns for its clients.

“ Our clients need intern and co-op programs that attract these students; and these students need jobs and experience,” O’Brien says. “We see it as a way to nurture a robust talent pool for the future.” For more information on Enterforce, see www.enterforce.com

HOST COMMITTEE PROFILE: PATRICIA MAY, PRESIDENT AND CEO TEMBUA: THE PRECISION LANGUAGE SOLUTION Global companies speaking to their customers, prospects and employees in multiple languages and on technical topics need 100% assurance that their communications are clear and accurate. Providing them with this security is Tembua, The Precise Language Solution, a single source of subject matter expertise and language proficiency that delivers spoken interpretation and written translation of 100 languages and dialects for documents from product marketing to employee benefits.

President and CEO Patricia May designed Tembua’s distinctive business model to provide her clients with the highest level of trust in communicating their ideas and products globally. As a WBENC-certified Women’s Business Enterprise (WBE) and member of the Host Committee, May will celebrate Tembua’s 20th Anniversary in June, which happens to be coinciding with the WBENC 2013 National Conference & Business Fair in Tembua’s native Minneapolis.

“ Tembua’s multi-language expertise protects our clients’ brands,” she says. “Our Fortune 500 clients and government entities know the importance of communicating precisely in every language that their constituents read and speak. Those specializing in highly technical fields such as medical, pharmaceutical or engineering require yet another layer of expertise to ensure that their documents are correct as well as understood.” To meet its clients’ exacting needs, Tembua teams up subject matter experts – PATRICIA MAY

most armed with PhDs and MDs who communicate in their native languages – with

translators who are fluent in languages ranging from the core business 25 to other languages from the remotest areas of the world. For UPS, Tembua recently translated the summary of its benefit plans into Spanish, Chinese, Navajo and Tagalog, an Austronesian language spoken in the Philippines. For Boston Scientific, Tembua vetted the terminology in its training programs and manuals – including tests, reference volumes and PowerPoint presentations – and translated them into Brazilian Portuguese for everyday use. And for a medical device company in Eastern Europe, Tembua employed technical experts in Polish, German, Czech and Russian.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT Tembua manages all elements of the linguistic value chain from authors and translators through revisers, SMEs and digital formatting experts. “For a medical project, we may use a practicing German cardiologist as a subject matter expert to read the document in his native German. He makes sure that it is up to date and correctly translated,” May explains. Tembua’s global reach enables quick turn around and agility. Because its team spans multiple geographies, Tembua can move a project through various check points and time zones over a 24 hour period. Tembua collaborates with its clients to meet legal, HR and product requirements and fill executive and corporate communication needs. Its primary operational objective of delivering quality in product and processes is reinforced by its certification to both ISO 9001:2008 and EN 15038:2006. As per its EN 15038 certification, Tembua’s linguists must have a minimum of five years’ experience along with industry knowledge and research, technological and linguistic competence. Additionally, they must be able to write and express their thoughts in both the first and second languages of the project. WBENC certification has been a source of opportunity for Tembua. May is enthusiastic about its benefits, saying, “WBENC certification has been our door into the large companies, particularly those which have supplier diversity officers. WBENC certification and the WBDC-Chicago provided us with entre into major companies from our first big insurance client to General Mills. Certification tells a purchasing officer that this is a serious, established company.” For more information about Tembua, The Precise Language Solution, see www.tembua.com

HOST COMMITTEE PROFILE: TERRI E. McNALLY – PRESIDENT AND CEO GLOBAL CAPITAL LTD. Global Capital is a trusted source of equipment lease financing, providing Fortune 1000 companies with liquidity and asset protection. With a core business in financing the leases for heavy machinery, transportation vehicles or office equipment, Global Capital has added a new specialty: the white-hot area of energy saving devices and lighting systems.

The company was founded 14 years ago by President and CEO Terri E. McNally following a distinguished career at major financial services companies such as GE Capital. Today Global Capital is an asset management and equipment financing company based in Chicago, Illinois and doing business in 28 countries. It is also in the enviable position of being among the most liquid and innovative sources of equipment lease financing available. A longtime WBENC-certified WBE, McNally is a member of the Host Committee for the 2013 National Conference & Business Fair in Minneapolis. Global Capital enables companies to avoid tying up tens of millions of dollars in high cost equipment like fork lifts or rail cars, or obsolescing equipment like copiers and telecommunications. Instead the companies can lease them from Global Capital which provides highly competitive terms and comprehensive services to manage those assets, until the company is ready to buy, sell or renew the lease on the equipment in three to five years. With an eye to serving its clients’ emerging needs, Global Capital is now helping companies to convert their lighting to LED fixtures by providing lease financing on that equipment, and a range of consultative and implementation services to help them TERRI E. McNALLY

with the conversion. This will require equipment such variable frequency drives to

President and CEO

adapt them to building systems, or energy economizers called rectifiers that control the speed of the electricity flowing through the environment. This is a growing marketplace: According to IMS Research, LED technology is expected to grow by 40% between 2011-2015 and comprise 41% of the total market for complete fixed lighting fixtures by 2015.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT “ Only three percent of buildings today have the energy equipment that they will need in the coming decades,” McNally says. “We can assess the actionable steps a company needs to take to convert its lighting, starting with how many light fixtures it needs to change. Then we can manage the installation process, and help them obtain government energy rebates.” Including cost savings and rebates, Global Capital estimates that most companies can recoup their initial investment in energy saving lighting within 1.9 years. Meanwhile, Global Capital has enabled that company to borrow the money to fund the new lighting for a three to five year period of time, freeing it up to use its capital for other – and potentially energy saving – initiatives. This pro-active willingness to streamline a client’s equipment installation and management processes is one reason that Global Capital has been so successful.

Another is its reliable stable of funding sources. “Our track record is excellent, so we can access capital even in tight markets,” McNally says. It provides industry knowledge that helps its clients anticipate the business trends that they – and their equipment – will need to adapt to. Yet WBENC certification – and the network of corporations that McNally has known – has been key to Global Capital’s growth. In addition to being a member of the Host Committee, McNally is an active contributor to The Women’s Business Development Center of Chicago (WBDC-Chicago). “There is simply nothing to match the WBENC experience. The network that we build with our corporate and government partners allows us to reach out and connect in ways that I never could have anticipated,” she says. WOMEN ON WELLNESS

KEEP MOVING We hear a lot about the importance of daily physical activity or exercise. “What is the big deal?” you ask. Daily physical activity IS a very big deal. As a hard working business woman, you need to invest in yourself and take time to move every day and encourage your greatest asset, your employees, to do the same.

I “hear” many of you thinking, “How can I add one more task to my already full plate?” Perhaps some of you have thoughts about your hair or that sweating is not an option since you have already had a morning shower and spent so much effort to get ready for the day ahead. Or maybe you think that a person must be fit to start a program or must do a lot to get any benefits from exercise. Many women end up doing nothing and do not take advantage of opportunities to energize, rejuvenate, relax, play or just have fun moving. Moving is simple as is getting started NOW to achieve better health. Give yourself a gift of just 10 minutes of “ME” time every day and take a walk. The goal, over time, will become 20 minutes a day and, ultimately, 30 minutes a day to take a walk. Its wealth will amaze you!

GET THE FACTS:

• 60% of women do not participate in the recommended amount of physical activity. • 2 5% of women are not active at all. • 2 30,000 women miss work annually because they suffer work-related musculoskeletal disorders (MSD). • The most common workplace injuries for women include tendonitis, low back pain and repetitive motion disorders (primarily carpel tunnel syndrome).

ENJOY THE BENEFITS AND READ THE “WOW, WHO KNEW?” FACTS BELOW: The benefits of regular, daily physical activity are so enormous that it is difficult to understand why so few women do not take advantage of this protective agent. • Just 30 minutes a day can reduce your risk of heart disease, diabetes, colon cancer, obesity, high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol and stress related illnesses. • Physical activity can increase your metabolism, strengthen your bones, increase your lean muscle mass, improve mental outlook on life, give you more energy, improve sleep habits, increase confidence levels, and reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression.

• Physical activity has been shown to prevent workrelated injuries. Your benefits from being active are vast! Recognize what is important to you by looking at your current lifestyle: how you live, your personal health risks, your present health issues and family history. Think about these facts relative to the reasons why NOW is the right time for you to become active.

PREVENT UNNECESSARY HEALTH RISKS AND CONDITIONS WHILE GIVING YOURSELF THE BENEFITS THAT WILL HELP YOU LIVE THE LIFE YOU WANT TO LIVE: 1. Control Weight 2. Prevent Certain Conditions, Diseases and Health Risks: a. Heart Disease b. High Blood Pressure c. Increase your HDL (high-density lipoprotein) “good” cholesterol. d. Decrease unhealthy triglycerides. e. Keep your blood flowing smoothly, which decreases your risk of cardiovascular diseases. f. Prevent or manage stroke, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, depression, and certain types of cancer, arthritis and falls. 3. Improve Your Mood a. Physical activity stimulates various brain chemicals that may leave you feeling happier, more relaxed, increase your confidence and improve your self-esteem. 4. Boost Your Energy a. Improves your muscle strength and boosts your endurance. Daily physical activity delivers oxygen and nutrients to your tissues and helps your heart and lungs to work more efficiently. When your heart and lungs work more efficiently, you have more energy to accomplish more. 5. Improve Sleep 6. Spark Your Intimacy a. Regular physical activity leaves you with more energy and feeling better about yourself which can impact your sex life.

7. Have Fun a. It is so important to find an activity that is fun for you and something that you look forward to doing each day. The body and mind need a break from stress and routine. Find an activity that makes you happy, creates smiles and feels good. Make it social; move with family and friends to share the value while enjoying the company.

“I HAVE NO TIME”; IT’S THE NUMBER ONE EXCUSE Time is the number one reason that women don’t make their own health and fitness a priority. Part of the misconception is that women often think they have to be able to run a marathon or take a 60-minute step class every day in order for exercise to be considered to be of value. That’s not the case. Studies show that taking three 10-minute walks a day can dramatically improve fitness. Or consider simple interval workout that will rev up the effort and use more energy (calories): warm up for five minutes performing your preferred aerobic activity: walk, cycle, run, swim, etc.. Then alternate maximum effort bursts of one minute followed by two to three minutes at your normal pace. Alternate for 10 to12 minutes, and finish with a five-minute cool down.

RESOURCES: INSPIRE YOUR EMPLOYEES TO BE ACTIVE TOO: Sponsor a physical activity program at work. Encourage employees to take a daily walk with a fellow employee; all they will need is comfortable walking shoes. Present the physical activity in an easy, non-intimidating fashion with little or no expectations. The progression from there will depend on each individual’s goals, needs, interests and overall health. A healthy employee is a productive one. Additional ideas to encourage employees to move: use the stairs as much as possible; park the car furthest from the entrance to the building; ride a bike to work; walk briskly whenever possible. Get up from the computer or chair every 30 to 45 minutes to stretch or take a two minute walk. Our bodies are meant to move, not to sit all day.
