MESSAGE Last month I shared thoughts on the various business cases that exist to support supplier diversity and inclusion in Corporate and Government supply chains. The WBENC network is committed to delivering high capacity WBEs for inclusion in these important supply chains, as well as, the supply chains of other women’s businesses. One of the best ways for WBEs to build capacity and expand business connections is to attend and be active in the WBENC National Conference & Business Fair (NCBF) occurring June 25-27, 2013 in Minneapolis, MN. I encourage all of you to plan your participation and take full advantage of the vast opportunities available at the 2013 NCBF as we Join Forces to Succeed Together! WBENC Staff, our RPOs and many committee members have finalized relevant programming and activities for the NCBF. Our Co-Chairs, MN Corporate member base, WBE Host Committee and partner WBDCChicago (& MN office) have taken the lead in ensuring that networking and matchmaking opportunities allow for strong and effective connections. They have, along with our extensive sponsor base, been preparing for delivery of robust workshops that will allow you to focus your involvement throughout the conference on the activities that will best support your needs whether you are attending as a Corporate or Government Member, Regional Partner or other alliance partner or certified WBE. TOP CORPORATION BEST PRACTICES: MACY’S
Macy’s Inc., a new recipient of the 2012 WBENC Top Corporation for Women’s Business Enterprises (WBEs) award, is passionate in its commitment to women’s business development. From their most senior leadership and down, Macy’s commitment to drive women’s business growth is evident throughout the organization.
Terry J. Lundgren, CEO, Chairman of the Board, and President, Macy’s, Inc., conveys a strong message that Macy’s is dedicated to supplier diversity. He recently served four years as the Chairman of the National Minority Supplier Development Council, and subsequently created a Diversity Committee comprised of the company’s Executive Committee, including Lundgren and key senior leadership. This reinforces the retailer’s holistic approach to diversity at Macy’s. Howard Thompson, VP of Purchasing and Supplier Development and Shawn Outler, Group VP of Multicultural Vendor Development, Leased Businesses, and Vendor Collaboration, drive women’s business development at Macy’s. Thompson covers the “non-retail” side of the business such as transportation, IT, facilities, construction, and marketing. Outler’s responsibilities include the sourcing of women’s businesses that offer product for resale across all categories in apparel and hard goods, i.e. beauty, fashion and home products. To develop these women suppliers, she authored the groundbreaking “Workshop at Macy’s” that each year selects from thousands of applicants, approximately 20 women and minority business owners to participate in a week-long immersion in the business of fashion. With the aim of mentoring and fostering growth with up-and-coming minority and women-owned businesses, The Workshop at Macy’s was created to help these enterprises achieve and sustain positive and successful retail relationships. This industry first initiative began in the spring of 2011, completed its third year this month. Considered a “game changer,” the goal of the annual program is to help create a pipeline of viable enterprises that will grow to become successful partners within Macy’s own vendor community and the retail industry at large.

“ This program was created to develop minority and women-owned businesses that make great products, but need real-world knowledge and experience in the arena of a large scale nationwide retailer. This program helps reinforce Macy’s long-standing commitment to vendor diversity and to providing customers with unique goods and services that meet their lifestyle,” Outler said. The Workshop at Macy’s is a four-and-one-half-day intensive training course developed by a consortium of experts from Macy’s Learning & Development, Macy’s Multicultural Merchandising and Vendor Development, Babson College, the nation’s leading business school for entrepreneurship, and with select Macy’s merchants and vendors. The specially designed business development curriculum allows selected participants to collaborate with fellow aspiring vendors, gain access to industry experts and solicit one-on-one business coaching. The course work includes classes on merchandising and assortment planning, marketing, EDI (Electronic Data Interchange), financial management, and access to capital. Macy’s is proactive in advancing women’s businesses through the buying process. This starts with the commitment of business leaders along with the supplier diversity teams. Thompson and Outler, along with buyers from selected departments, attend the WBENC National Conference and Business Fair.
“ If a WBE wants to meet a buyer in IT, in most cases we are able to make an introduction on the spot,” Thompson said. “We typically bring 10 -15 representatives from across the company, including Bloomingdale’s, which is owned by Macy’s, Inc.” It was during last year’s conference trade show that Cathi Coan, President and CEO Techway Services Inc., and a WBE Star, would meet Thompson, who put her in contact with the IT decision makers that led to several subsequent business awards to purchase Macy’s retired IT equipment. This personal approach is also reflected in Macy’s efficient yet hands-on process for connecting buyers to WBEs throughout the year. Buyers access potential suppliers through the supplier diversity team, where a dedicated team member researches the WBE on WBENC Link, circles back to the buyer on their needs and presents the top candidates. With clear expectations set for women’s and diverse spend, buyers can track their progress online on a monthly basis.
PRESIDENT’S REPORT FILLING THE PIPELINE AND GROWING CAPACITY Macy’s works to develop relationships with WBEs, provides guidance on how to sell their products and services, and where possible, expands the business opportunities. On the non-retail side, it starts with the company identifying a specific need for a product or service in a particular area to be sourced by a buyer. The Supplier Diversity team assists the buyer in identifying potential WBEs to be included in the bid process. To expand its base and relationship with prospective suppliers, Macy’s also holds Vendor Fairs throughout the year. There, prospective suppliers meet buyers and explore potential areas of business opportunity. Last year Macy’s held a construction vendor fair in New York City for some 80 suppliers. This year it is planning six events, including a recent Marketing focused event attended by 20 potential suppliers. In the bidding process Macy’s buyers vet all potential bidders to ensure they can meet its product and service requirements. Once the suppliers prove themselves in one region, they may have the opportunity to broaden that reach.
“ At this point buyers have formed a partnership with the WBE – and will ask them if they can scale up,” Thompson added. Julie Copeland, President and CEO of Arbill, Vice Chair of the Women’s Enterprise Forum, and former WBE Star, started with a specific contract for medical supplies and quickly grew to become a national supplier of safety goods for Macy’s. Jayne Millard, CEO, of Turtle & Hughes, a distributor of Electrical and Industrial equipment, started with a discreet contract and is now advancing Macy’s sustainability program by relamping stores with energy efficient LED technology across the country. In marketing communications, Macy’s works with Cincinnati-based Sanger & Eby, a WBENC-certified company focused on talent lifecycle communications, employer branding, and employee engagement. In addition to the Macy’s, Inc. corporate website, Sanger & Eby designs and develops the Workshop at Macy’s and Macy’s Diversity Leadership websites. Partners Lisa Sanger and Donna Eby are becoming more actively involved in WBENC as well.
“ We see the value of diversity spring to life in these actual success stories,” Thompson said. “They make Macy’s a stronger company and a better source of choice for our customers.” Outler emphasizes that Macy’s commitment to diversifying its vendor mix is a win-win, saying, “We find talented new vendors with quality, well-priced merchandise that satisfies our customers and in turn those vendors see their businesses grow, thereby allowing us to foster business development in the growing communities we serve.” For more information, see www.macysinc.com

TOP CORPORATION BEST PRACTICES: WALMART Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., which was named to the 2012 WBENC’s Top Corporations for Women’s Business Enterprises (WBEs), has made a bold commitment to women’s business development: $20 billion will be sourced with women-owned businesses for its U.S. business over five years through 2016.
This pledge, WalMart’s Global Women’s Economic Empowerment Initiative announced in September 2011, is part of a far-reaching strategic plan designed to empower women around the world. The initiative includes large internal and external goals. WalMart will provide more training, market access and career opportunities to nearly one million women, many on farms and in factories around the globe. Additionally, WalMart is working to increase women and minority representation among its largest professional service firms and merchandise suppliers. To achieve its goals, WalMart is tapping into the external expertise of its supply partners, related Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and its Women-Owned Business Advisory Council, which includes WBENC’s President and CEO Pamela Prince-Eason.
“ WalMart is seeking to purposefully change lives,” said Michael Byron, Senior Director, Supplier Diversity. “We are developing women’s businesses because they meet our needs with innovation and agility. But we also know that they are growing faster and are twice as likely as other businesses to hire women in management. “ More than 60 percent of our customers are women,” added MiKaela Wardlaw Lemmon, Senior Director for Women’s Economic Empowerment. “Purchasing more products from women-owned businesses is the right and smart thing to do for our business.” Byron and Lemmon are actively engaging WalMart’s key buyers and stakeholders across the company in the company’s goals for women-owned and diverse business development. They are raising awareness about new tools and resources that enable buyers to pursue those goals in their day-to-day work. These tools and resources are delivered through a suite of seven “solutions.” Taken together, they form a seamless process connecting the buyers with promising WBEs, supporting their mutual success and making WalMart a stronger company to meet its customers’ needs.
PRESIDENT’S REPORT SEVEN SOLUTIONS FOR WBE DEVELOPMENT These solutions include a scorecard and dashboard to identify WBEs and track their progress; a strategy for identifying and vetting WBEs; a “Supplier Diversity Playbook” providing contact information on the Supplier Diversity Team; a Supplier Academy that onboards WBEs and supports their growth; a Joint Business Plan that sets 12-18 month goals for a selected 50 women suppliers; a supply chain to help small businesses partner together to serve WalMart; and financing options to help them access capital for capacity building. TO HIGHLIGHT A FEW: To create a scorecard and dashboard on WBE and MBE progress, the team at WalMart wanted to present data in ways that were meaningful and easy to use. This was accomplished by developing a diversity application for a report already in use. Now, this Diversity Terms Report allows buyers to review supplier details including sales, cost, as well as gender and ethnicity of ownership. This information is backed up with an annual packet of new and existing suppliers. To prevent suppliers from falling through the cracks in the hiring process, the team developed a dashboard that tracks where each women’s and diverse business is in the continuum of competing and winning a contract.

Once promising suppliers are identified, they are invited to WalMart’s Supplier Diversity Summits. These feature WalMart leaders or outside speakers, such as Karen Mills, Administrator of the Small Business Administration, and are often focused on merchandise specialties. The Summit educates attendees on how to do business with WalMart, provides matchmaking meetings with WalMart buyers and sourcing partners, and creates networking opportunities among WBEs.
Once WBEs have secured a commitment, WalMart’s Supplier Diversity Academy onboards them. Then WalMart quickly builds a strategy to create an ongoing lifecycle relationship with the supplier. “We might visit that supplier, and provide them with insight on what our needs will be in the next year to 18 months. This creates transparency and sets expectations for the relationship,” Byron says. WalMart will also help mitigate any risk or difficulties that a supplier might have.
“ If a supplier is not doing as well as they should be, we will have the conversations with the business and the supplier to help redirect the relationship to a successful track,” he adds. Buyer-supplier partnerships are also encouraged by e-learning modules to educate the suppliers on what it takes to do business with WalMart, and the buyers on what they need to know about women and diverse suppliers.
“ We represent the largest retail supply chain in this country,” Byron concluded. “It is imperative for us to be a convening force for the development of women’s and diverse businesses.” For WalMart, that also means serving its customers. GOVERNMENT SPOTLIGHT THE NEW ChallengeHER CAMPAIGN Our federal government spends over $100B annually on contracts awarded to small businesses. Their commitment to working with small businesses increases the firms’ revenues and creates jobs, fueling our economy. As a result, the Obama administration and the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) have remained dedicated to changing the federal contracting culture and process to provide access and remove barriers for small, women-owned, minority, and disadvantaged businesses. On April 23, 2013, Marie Johns, SBA Deputy Administrator, introduced new efforts to include women-owned small businesses (WOSB) in the federal procurement process during the WOSB Opportunity Forum. The purpose of the ChallengeHER initiative is to leverage the resources of the SBA, WIPP (Women Impacting Public Policy) and American Express OPEN to promote the current WOSB Federal Contracting Program, which will result in more WOSBs entering the federal supply chain. In the coming months, the SBA will be holding ChallengeHER events in the following cities: Phoenix, Seattle, New Orleans, Denver, Atlanta, San Francisco and New York. There will be matchmaking opportunities for WOSBs to connect with decision-makers, which will increase the potential for procurement officers to select a WOSB for their contract needs. There will also be training on the System for Award Management (SAM) registration, which is the database contracting officers use to identify potential vendors. Attendees will also receive an overview on the eligibility requirements for the WOSB Contracting Program set aside opportunities. Aligned with the nature of a true entrepreneur of seeing a need, identifying an opportunity and creating a solution, Massey founded MYCA:handling to address a need expressed by Procter & Gamble for a supplier to provide a national material handling business solution. MYCA:handling was established in 2004 and became a WBENC-Certified Women’s Business Enterprise in 2010. Procter & Gamble was both the inspiration and first client of MYCA:handling. Sonoco Packaging, a Tier 1 supplier of P&G, is a large manufacturer of industrial and consumer packaging products in the United States, Europe, Canada and other countries. They were actively seeking a solution for materials management that MYCA offered and following a strong recommendation from P&G, signed up with MYCA on the spot in 2006. Sonoco was simultaneously launching their Supplier Diversity initiative to identify and develop partnerships with qualified minority and women-owned suppliers. The business resulted in a long term and beneficial alliance between both companies. MYCA:handling’s revenue doubled in their first year of business with Sonoco, and today, provides 12 dedicated resources to the account. Sonoco is MYCA:handling’s largest client.
PRESIDENT’S REPORT The benefits of developing and leveraging relationships within supply chain partners continues to impact the innovation of MYCA:handling and provide enhanced solutions for all of their clients. Working in partnership with Sonoco Products, MYCA recently developed a sophisticated and robust fleet management system that measures the “actual after installation” cost to operate equipment, parts and servicing expenses and streamlines processes, all while lowering operating expenses.

WBE SUCCESS STORY:
Sylvana Coche, Founder and CEO, Gravity Pro Consulting, and Southern California Edison exude energy as they complete a contract for SAP solutions software in record time. Last year, Gravity Pro Consulting’s Founder and CEO Sylvana Coche was identified by Joy Nery Yue, Supplier Advancement Program manager for Southern California Edison (SCE), Supplier Diversity, as a potential supplier of SAP Solutions Software to meet during a strategic procurement match-matching event. It was hosted in partnership with the Women’s Business Enterprise Council West (WBENC – West) in San Diego.
When the two women met, Yue recognized the potential fit and introduced Coche to SCE’s IT Procurement manager. Southern California Edison is known for its longstanding commitment to supplier diversity and providing opportunities for diverse c o n s u l t i n g
business enterprises. In 1979, the utility created its Supplier Diversity program, which has enabled SCE’s competitive small and diverse suppliers to grow, while better serving customers with new and innovative solutions. As one of the few women-owned SAP value-added resellers (VAR) in the U.S., Gravity Pro Consulting is certified as an SAP Gold Partner, the highest tier of SAP’s partners, making Gravity Pro Consulting the only WBENC Certified Women-Owned business with an SAP Gold credential. Two months after Yue and Coche were introduced, SCE began the process of completing its initial contract with Gravity Pro Consulting. A purchase order was issued and finalized soon thereafter. Contracts of this magnitude typically take 24-36 months to bring to fruition. However, a combination of supplier readiness and stellar credentials, along with the ground work previously laid through SCE’s supplier diversity outreach program, contributed to the contract’s prompt execution by aligning with SCE’s goal of

increasing IT procurement with WBENC Certified Women-Owned businesses. Gravity Pro works in collaboration with SAP to fulfill SCE’s needs. This initial contract with SCE establishes a stepping stone for Gravity Pro to continue to expand on the opportunity to deliver further value.

Then we can manage the installation process, and help them obtain government energy rebates.” Including cost savings and rebates, Global Capital estimates that most companies can recoup their initial investment in energy saving lighting within 1.9 years. Meanwhile, Global Capital has enabled that company to borrow the money to fund the new lighting for a three to five year period of time, freeing it up to use its capital for other – and potentially energy saving – initiatives. The Hermes Creative Awards are based on judges from the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals (AMCP). The international organization consists of several thousand marketing, communication, advertising, public relations, digital media production and freelance professionals. Judges are industry professionals who look for companies and individuals whose talent exceeds a high standard of excellence and whose work serves as a benchmark for the industry. There were about 5,600 entries from throughout the United States and several other countries in the Hermes Creative Awards 2013 competition. Hall has been certified since 2006, serves on the Board of the Women’s Business Development Center in Florida and served on the 2012 National Conference Host Committee. KEEP MOVING We hear a lot about the importance of daily physical activity or exercise. “What is the big deal?” you ask. Daily physical activity IS a very big deal. As a hard working business woman, you need to invest in yourself and take time to move every day and encourage your greatest asset, your employees, to do the same.
I “hear” many of you thinking, “How can I add one more task to my already full plate?” Perhaps some of you have thoughts about your hair or that sweating is not an option since you have already had a morning shower and spent so much effort to get ready for the day ahead. Or maybe you think that a person must be fit to start a program or must do a lot to get any benefits from exercise. Many women end up doing nothing and do not take advantage of opportunities to energize, rejuvenate, relax, play or just have fun moving. Moving is simple as is getting started NOW to achieve better health. Give yourself a gift of just 10 minutes of “ME” time every day and take a walk. The goal, over time, will become 20 minutes a day and, ultimately, 30 minutes a day to take a walk. Its wealth will amaze you!

“I HAVE NO TIME”; IT’S THE NUMBER ONE EXCUSE Time is the number one reason that women don’t make their own health and fitness a priority. Part of the misconception is that women often think they have to be able to run a marathon or take a 60-minute step class every day in order for exercise to be considered to be of value. That’s not the case. Studies show that taking three 10-minute walks a day can dramatically improve fitness. Or consider simple interval workout that will rev up the effort and use more energy (calories): warm up for five minutes performing your preferred aerobic activity: walk, cycle, run, swim, etc.. Then alternate maximum effort bursts of one minute followed by two to three minutes at your normal pace. Alternate for 10 to12 minutes, and finish with a five-minute cool down.

Encourage employees to take a daily walk with a fellow employee; all they will need is comfortable walking shoes. Present the physical activity in an easy, non-intimidating fashion with little or no expectations. The progression from there will depend on each individual’s goals, needs, interests and overall health. A healthy employee is a productive one. Additional ideas to encourage employees to move: use the stairs as much as possible; park the car furthest from the entrance to the building; ride a bike to work; walk briskly whenever possible. Get up from the computer or chair every 30 to 45 minutes to stretch or take a two minute walk. Our bodies are meant to move, not to sit all day.
