2018

Dear Friends and Supporters, The first half of 2018 has been a very busy but highly productive period! During this time we completed several construction projects to improve the health and welfare of our resident populations. Major works include the new savannah-dwelling guenons enclosure, the large metal tree inside the drill enclosure, and the complex structural enrichment on chimp island. Thanks to the hard work from the team who have been busy undertaking social integrations and building new enclosures, our quarantine is almost empty. We will therefore seize the opportunity to perform some critical renovation and maintenance work in the quarantine area which will in turn increase our ability to take care of other animals in

need. We will also soon work to re-enrich some other sections including the Agile and Red-capped Mangabeys and Drills. Some of the animals that were rescued this year include a baby gorilla, named Bobga who will be transferred with Jackie (female chimpanzee) to Ape Action Africa, Mefou Park, Central Region following their rehabilitation. Probably most exciting achievement this year was the work undertaken to plan the future of our animals. Now that the daily functioning of the centre is stable, despite some difficulties encountered by our public partner to consistently provide the most adequate amounts and quality of food, we have been able to push forward the work started several years ago to 5 define the best framework to build forest 5

enclosures in partnership with key stakeholders. In our advocacy work, we insist on the fact we must enhance and ensure the well-being of our animals but also must work towards making a bigger conservation impact. This year we have met and discussed this topic with the main conservation NGOs in Cameroon, the Ministry and main funding agencies in Cameroon, and travelled to the North and South Regions for site inspections. Our project is definitely receiving a lot of attention and we are really excited with these developments. Although it is still a long way away, the progress made allowed us to decide on two pre-selected sites with good potential: one in the Mount Cameroon National Park, South-West region, belonging to the CrossSanaga ecological region (in which endangered Drills, Nigeria-Cameroon chimpanzees, and Preuss's monkey are native to) and in Campo Ma'an National Park, South region, belonging to the Congo Basin forest (in which critically endangered Western lowland gorillas, vulnerable Mandrills and Agile mangabeys are native to). We plan to start field prospection missions, starting in the South region around Campo Ma'an National Park, hopefully before the end of the year. However, the current socio-political crisis in the region will again be one of the main challenges in the second half of the year. It

2018

will likely reduce our ability to conduct our outreach programme efficiently, especially within schools. Despite this, our education programmes this year to date, in schools and through our Saturday's Nature Club have been a success, and our reinforced education team is gaining in experience and skills. For the second semester, we hope to start a Family Nature Club (funding dependent) with the children of our most active members of the Batoke community. The situation in the region is also having a negative impact on the number of visitors and volunteers coming to the centre; which of course is resulting in further financial and human resource challenges. This is why we are more than ever grateful and dependent on our long term and new supporters that support our mission and vision. We are actively working towards increasing unrestricted income, reaching new audiences, engaging more volunteers and raising funds for specific projects such as building a new parrot aviary to accelerate the rehabilitation process for the many African grey parrots we receive every year. This would not be possible without the help of our new marketing/fundraising manager, Laura, who arrived in April and who has already done a great job since she arrived. This report will briefly describe our main achievements over the past six months,

present our main objectives for the second half of the year and ends with a brief financial report.

With very best wishes, Limbe, 31 July 2018
