The Margaret Poole Littlejohn English Education program adheres to South Carolina’s education guidelines. Students study pedagogical theory, develop their own philosophy of education, and learn to apply their teaching style to lesson plans that they create within their curriculum. Additionally, students pursuing a degree in English Education learn to incorporate digital technology into their classroom and gain hands-on teaching experience through a semester of student teaching. Students also prepare for the Praxis I and Praxis II exams. Upon graduation, students are prepared to enter their own classrooms and begin their careers as English educators. The Teacher Education Program is approved by the State Department of Education in accordance with the Standards for State Approval of Teacher Education established by the National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education and Certification.

In November 2021, our English Education program was officially named in memory of Margaret Poole Littlejohn. Littlejohn graduated with Honors from Limestone in 1950 with a Bachelor’s degree in English and went on to teach high school English in South Carolina for many years. An endowed scholarship for the English Education Program is also being established in her memory.
