ecord breaking sale averages, a world record price, an increase in Limousin market share, dominance of the summer and winter shows, and major progress with the Society’s ten-year breed improvement programme. These were the upbeat headlines from British Limousin Cattle Society Chairman John Phillips in his second annual report to members published within the Society’s 2015 BLCS Annual Report and Accounts. Looking at the year as a whole, and the early months of 2016 Mr Phillips commented upon the economic challenges, change, and speculation for agriculture, the beef industry, and the United Kingdom as a whole with the consequences of the historical Brexit vote and what that will mean for the United Kingdom’s farmers. “From a beef production perspective it would seem obvious that with the industry moving in a market driven direction that the focus must be full-square on efficiency and profitability. Cattle with the genetics that convert food efficiently, hit the ideal slaughter weights at the youngest possible age, and have repeatable, quality carcases consistently hitting the target grades, will be in demand and will find reward.” “Through 2015 and into this year there has been a significant and long term industry move to sourcing cattle at 15-16 months of age and weighing 350-365kg. This brings into focus medium sized cows producing fast growing calves that are finished at this age and hit the spec. Retailers, which account for 86% of fresh beef sales in the UK, have made clear the size of cattle that they want and will pay less for beef from heavier carcases. “ “This change in market focus is one that I think fits the Limousin

In commending his 2015 report John Phillips congratulated all BLCS members who had contributed to another very strong performance for both the breed and the Society and he listed some of the main breed highlights and achievements from the year.

breed extremely well as a suckler cow and producing first quality calves with top grades, good yield and high killing out percentages. The dynamic is already evident and has been a principle factor in the strong Limousin performance at bull and female sales in the year,” said Mr Phillips. Also highlighted is the ongoing work in the Limousin long range Breed Improvement Plan which was launched in 2014 and is noted as being the central part of the Society’s forward technical work. In early 2016 Limousin genomic breeding values had been produced for a range of carcase traits in what was a beef industry first for the UK. Work is also reported as ongoing in the DEFRA funded feed efficiency project, within which Limousin is the featured breed, and most recently the Society has embarked

on a further maternal traits project which it is expected will yield new female fertility and calf survival GEBVs. These three projects in size are £1.5 Million, £1.75 Million, and £200,000 respectively and the Chairman John Phillips states that he is “proud that the Society is in a position, and has had the vision, to take part in this far sighted work. The ongoing aim is to future-proof the breed and provide producers with cattle that are profitable and adaptable to meet current and changing markets,” he says. The report highlights that this work and investment is what differentiates the Limousin breed in the eyes of producers, processors and retailers and will continue to grow market share and increase returns for breeders. At the close of 2015 the Limousin breed was again confirmed as the UK’s leading beef breed, for

• Limousin confirmed as the largest numerical beef breed in the UK for the twentieth year in a row and since passport records began. 486,680 Limousin sired passports issued, an increase of 2,299 on the year. • Pedigree Limousin registrations surpassed the 19,000 mark for the sixth year in a row. • The four year Limousin Carcase Traits project was completed and rolled out. • Work commenced in the DEFRA funded feed efficiency project with Limousin as the main breed. • Limousin breed win 14 interbreeds at the summer show ‘majors’ for the second year in a row. • Six of the seven ‘major’ winter primestock shows were won by Limousin sired cattle

NEWS including the ‘Grand Slam’ of English, Scottish, Irish, and Welsh Winter Fairs. • UK all-breeds record average of £8,709 set at Carlisle up by £467 on the previous mark. • Trueman Jagger sold for a Limousin world record and all-breeds European & UK record price of 140,000gns (£147,000). BLCS Honorary Treasure Gary Swindlehurst reported that the core income areas of registrations, membership, and sales commission had been maintained

at a very high level which was extremely pleasing in what he also described as ‘a challenging industry for pedigree and beef farmers.’ Commenting on the Society’s Breed Improvement Plan Mr Swindlehurst said that £1 Million of investment had been ring fenced to achieve the ten breeding goals identified over a ten year period. “I reiterate that the long term aim of the Breed Improvement Plan is the development of high quality Limousin genetics to deliver significant increases in performance and profitability for

pedigree and commercial beef farmers across the industry.” A summary of the main points of the 2015 financial year reported includes:

Headline figures: • Total income for the period ended 31st December 2015 of £955,577. • Total expenditure was £861,882. • Income from birth registration fees levelled at £526,100. • Sale commission for the year totalled £49,119. • The total net movement in

funds on the year was £32,758 The Society’s investment portfolio is reported as continuing to perform well and in line with benchmark figures. Within the report and accounts the level of funds carried forward in the year is shown as £2,704,616 which is up by £32,758. The 45th Annual General Meeting of the British Limousin Cattle Society was held on 15th September at the BLCS Offices, Concorde House, Leamington Spa.

LIMOUSIN BREED GETS A 94% APPROVAL FROM BULL BUYERS’ SURVEY • 94% of buyers will purchase further Limousin bulls • Easy calving the most important trait for buyers • Buyers’ respond positively on docility

inety-four percent of Limousin bull buyers will purchase further Limousin bulls at Society sales. That’s the main headline following an extensive bull buyers’ survey carried out by the British Limousin Cattle Society (BLCS) across 1400 bulls sold in 2012 and 2013 at official Society sales around the United Kingdom. The wide ranging questionnaire asked purchasers on the allround working abilities of the bulls including calving ease, docility of bulls and progeny, fertility, quality and performance of progeny, and food conversion and growth rate through to marketing. Additional questions asked of the importance placed on areas such as herd health information, performance figures, and pre-sale inspections, as well as how satisfied purchasers had been with all aspects of the performance of their Limousin bulls to date. Of the characteristics of the breed most important to buyers, the survey yielded that 36% of producers placed ease of calving first; followed in second place by carcase characteristics and conformation at 29% and saleable offspring third with 6%. In further confirmation of the breed’s calving performance 78% said that they

used their bulls on heifers. A significant trend within the survey showed that 27% of purchasers had changed to Limousin from another breed in the last five years. In a highly positive endorsement of the breed’s commercial attributes and performance, 93% of all respondents said that their calves had performed with ‘good’ and ‘better than expected’ rates of growth and feed conversion. When questioned on docility of the breed a huge 97% of respondents rated their bulls’ temperament as good (82%) and average (15%) with a similarly impressive 95% saying that the docility of progeny was average, good, and excellent. 84% of those surveyed gave a positive response to the fertility and serving capacity of their bulls whilst 70% of the bulls are noted as still being in use today at ages of five and six years old. Again confirming the popularity of the Limousin female, 68% of the respondents said that they retained heifers as breeding replacements. At the point of pedigree sale the importance of vendors’ herd health status at was highlighted with 97% respondents replying that this was very important (78%) and important (19%). In addition, 75% felt that compulsory TB testing

prior to sale would encourage them to purchase from wider TB areas. 95% said that the Society’s pre-sale vet inspection was important with 71% noting it as very important. 52% felt that all aspects of the inspection were of equal importance. Of the remaining responses, 30% thought that locomotion was the most important part of the inspection. In a new question to buyers, 85% of respondents said that semen testing of bulls pre-sale would be of interest to them. The importance of performance information at sale is reflected with 76% of respondents believing that EBV’s were very and quite important with 75% feeling that EBVs were very or quite well understood. Of the surveys received 75% of the respondents run one to three Limousin bulls with 22% running three to seven bulls. Of the bulls purchased 77% were for use in the suckler herd; 18% were bought by pedigree breeders; and 5% were for use in the dairy herd. The large

majority of the herds responding (89%) had more than thirty cows running on a combination of lowland units (56%) and upland/ hill units (44%). Further questions showed that 63% of calves are sold as stores with a further 33% sold finished. Of these, 71% are sold live and 27% sold dead. Commenting on the survey BLCS Chief Executive Iain Kerr said: “The results from the survey are very much in line with those held in recent years and to see this consistency in performance of the breed and the satisfaction of bull buyers is extremely positive”, he said. “These bull buyers’ surveys are a very important follow up to the sales allowing us to hear first-hand from purchasers and to consider and relay those comments back to breeders. Along with the buyers, the views of breeders, processors and retailers across the industry very much helps in shaping the forward Limousin Breed Improvement Plan, identifying future priorities, and maintaining profitability for all users.”

he strong year of Limousin sales in 2016 reached new heights with some spectacular and record prices attained. Leading the way was the cow Millington Highlight who sold with her heifer calf at foot at the herd’s dispersal sale for 50,000gns to new breeder Mick Gould and his wife, trading as M & J C Gould, Grange Farm, Bomere Heath, Shrewsbury, along with his brother-in-law, Jonathan and his nephew Tom Waring. The 50,000gns price is a new breed record for a cow and calf outfit. The sale which also saw a 30,00gns price grossed £445,149 for the 99 head sold. Meanwhile the top price Limousin bull in the period and in the year to date came in the shape of the Reserve Junior Male Champion at the 2016 National Limousin Show, Grahams Lorenzo, who sold for 40,000gns at the post show Sale

of Champions to Wilodge Limousins, Shifnal, Shrops. This Claragh Franco son was bred and sold by Robert & Jean Graham, Airthrey Kerse, Stirling. Further breeders’ sales in the period saw yet another breed record set when frozen embryos made 5000gns apiece at the on-farm production sale from the Dinmore herd of Paul Dawes, Hereford. The embryos sold were full siblings to the world record priced 140,000gns bull Trueman Jagger. The embryos were sold to Teus Dekker, Cowporation, Holland. The Dinmore Sale saw a top price of 16,000gns paid for Dinmore Lanelle, a Diamant daughter out of Dinmore Elle. Eleven animals in all made 5000gns and over with the top three prices all going to a new breeder in the Republic of Ireland. 2016 NATIONAL LIMOUSIN SHOW & SALE OF CHAMPIONS HAILED AS A BIG SUCCESS!

spectacular show of pedigree and commercial Limousin cattle ‘wowed’ the big crowds at the 2016 National Limousin Show & Sale of Champions held by the British Limousin Cattle Society at Carlisle’s Borderway Mart on 29th July and with main sponsors Shearwell Data Ltd. Exhibitors from the length and breadth of the UK combined to produce a catalogue of just under 330 cattle. At the end of the day ringside opinion agreed that this was one of the finest shows of Limousin sired cattle ever assembled in the UK with a tremendous depth of quality evident throughout the classes. Both the pedigree and commercial sections brought together many of the Champions and prize winners from the summer show season in a series of mouth-watering head to heads held throughout the day. Adding to the spectacle of the day was some superb and fluent judging from both Bruce Goldie and Frank Page respectively. The giant jumbotron screen, along with music, flags, lights and cameras all added to the professionalism of this once in every five years event. When the dust settled the world record breaking Trueman Jagger lifted the Supreme Championship for the Jagger Syndicate in the pedigree section with the Limousin sired heifer Black Beauty from Mark Harryman and Sarah Warriner taking the top award in the Commercial Championships. Commenting BLCS Chief Executive Iain Kerr said: “This was an outstanding show of Limousin cattle and I’d like to thank and congratulate all exhibitors who took part. The depth of quality in the classes in many instances right down the line shows just why the breed secured 14 interbreeds in the summer show season and more importantly why it is the UK’s number one beef breed topping

THE SUMMER ‘MAJORS’ SEE LIMOUSINS WIN 14 INTERBREEDS FOR A UNIQUE THREE IN A ROW!

uite remarkably, and what is thought to be a unique achievement, the Limousin breed again won 14 interbreeds for the third year in a row at the UK summer show four ‘majors’ of the Royal Ulster, Royal Highland, Great Yorkshire, and Royal Welsh shows. In an even spread of titles the Royal Welsh Show again lead the way with five interbreed titles wrapped up. Putting this into some kind of perspective the Limousin breed in the last five years has now won a whopping 74 interbreed titles at these same four ‘major’ shows! On top of some strong 2016 sales and an equally dominant title winning 2015 winter fair season, BLCS Chairman John Phillips was quick to congratulate the sum of the Limousin Team in his annual report to members. Commenting he said: “As is so very appropriate can I take the opportunity to congratulate all

BLCS members who, in another difficult industry year, do so much in so many ways to promote this wonderful breed. Year on year the standard of cattle forward at pedigree sales and shows, and at commercial markets, continues to improve to a remarkable level and long may this be the case.”

Once again the show season across the board saw some terrific cattle being shown, both pedigree and commercial, with a fantastic depth in standard and quality evident through the female classes in particular. Whilst there has been a little downward pressure on shows generally,

these major industry events continue to provide a fantastic shop window for the Limousin breed and present the opportunity to promote up and coming animals, herds, new genetics, and breeding bloodlines. A big well done to all!

THE ‘FINEST FLAVOUR’ LIMOUSIN STEAKS IN AWARD WINNING FORM • Limousin sirloins double-up in ASDA/ABP and McIntosh Donald’s Steak Contests

imousin steaks were again very much in award winning form in the high profile ‘blind’ tasting competitions held at the Royal Highland Show in June. Taking the top prize in the annual McIntosh Donald/Tesco Best Scotch Steak competition was North East of Scotland beef producer Gray & Noel Gall, of Home Farm, Kininmonth, Mintlaw. Their winning entry was a steak from a 300kg home bred Limousin cross heifer which classified –U4L and was according to McIntosh Donald site director, Alan McNaughton, ‘a clear winner’. This is the second year in a row a Limousin steak has won this event. The steaks selected for grilling

and tasting were from the sirloins of 12 carcases whittled down from an original entry of 150 cattle at McIntosh Donald’s Portlethen meat plant at the end of May. Meanwhile judging by a broad based panel of public tasters

produced a tie at the top of the ABP/ASDA steak competition also held at the Royal Highland Show. D & V Buchan of Savoch, Longside, Peterhead claimed a share of the supreme overall title with a steak from a U-3+

Limousin cross weighing 325kg. These further wins added to a long list of titles that Limousin steaks have secured in these types of competitions around the United Kingdom over the last twenty years. Commenting, Iain Kerr the Chief Executive of the British Limousin Cattle Society said; “Limousin beef is recognised by butchers, top chefs, and restaurateurs for its taste, flavour and tenderness and these types of wins are further recognition of that. To have such a large market share of cattle and to have this level of consistent, high end, product quality says a lot about the Limousin breed and its unique properties.”

or the second time in five years the Smith family’s Grange herd of Limousins has exported a Limousin bull to France, the home of the breed. The Smiths, George and Beth and son, Steven, have been breeding pedigree Limousins for 40 years at Daventry, Northamptonshire, always adding new genetics to their herd by importing from France. Their latest export, Grange Lequeux, is a full brother to the last bull they sold to France, Grange Gervaise, who was the first ever British bred Limousin to be sold and exported to France. Grange Lequeux was sold through Interlim Genetique Service to join Regis Lequeux’s herd at Roussines, Central France. He is by French sire Chabal and out of Grange Cascade, a Perit B daughter. Steven Smith said the export was the result of the herd’s focus on using exclusively French genetics and breeding

Lequeux exemplifies the French type of Limousin, being a well grown, well balanced bull with plenty of stretch and scope.” Adding his thoughts George Smith said the bull had been a stand-out from early on and while Regis Lequeux hadn’t seen the bull himself in the flesh until he arrived in France, he and the Interlim team bought him on the strength of his pedigree and the success of his brother in a number of French herds. “Gervaise has performed well for a number of French breeders and his sire, Chabal, a bull we imported from France a number of years ago, continues to breed well for us. His breeding was one

The plan is for the bull to be used within Regis Lequeux’s herd, as well as competing on the show circuit. Steven Smith said the 110-cow Grange herd had enjoyed many successes over its 40 years, but to export another bull to France in the herd’s ruby anniversary year was a unique achievement. “Bulls from the herd continue to be in demand from both pedigree and commercial breeders in the UK and it is pleasing to see a number of them performing well in their new homes. To have sold the first ever Limousin to France four years ago was an unbelievable feat, but to now follow that up with a second sale is something that is truly amazing.

The dispersal sale more than lived up to expectations with a 50,000gns top price and six animals in all making 9,000gns or more. The leading price of 50,000gns, and a new cow and calf breed record, was paid for the four year-old-cow Millington Highlight who was sold with her heifer calf at foot, Millington Limelight. Purchasing the record outfit was new Limousin breeders Mick Gould and his wife, trading as M & J C Gould, Grange Farm,

Bomere Heath, Shrewsbury, along with his brother-in-law, Jonathan and his nephew Tom Waring. The Goulds are in the process of establishing the Woodmarsh herd prefix, whilst Jonathan and Tom already have the Everpark herd prefix. Confirming the demand for the bloodline and the quality on offer the second top price of 30,000gns was paid for Millington Highlight’s first calf, Millington Juliet. This November 2014 born calf is by the French sire Ecran and was purchased by John and Pat Varley for their Queenshead herd based at Myrtle Grove Farm, Queensbury, Bradford. The Millington herd was originally established by John

Weatherill some sixteen years ago and Mr Weatherill, who is looking to re-establish a Limousin herd, featured among the purchases during the day. Leading Mr Weatherill’s purchases was the 12,000gns paid for the served heifer Millington Joyous. Joyous is a Greenwell Fieldmaster daughter and out of the Highlander sired Millington Gracious. Another to go to the same buyer was the 10,000gns Millington Hilton who was sold with her first calf at foot, the bull calf Millington Mayfair by Norman Hawk. December 2012 born, Hilton is an embryo calf by Objat and is another out of the same dam as the top price, Brockhurst Option.

She was purchased jointly by the Calogale herd of Messrs Lee, Kidwelly, Carmarthenshire, along with the Frogmore herd of Chris White, Moreton-in-Marsh, Gloucestershire. Early in the sale Millington Gorgeous made 9,200gns. This 2011 born embryo calf is a Mas Du Clo daughter out of Brockhurst Option and was sold with her bull calf Millington Majestic at foot, a Norman Hawk son. he stylish January 2015 born heifer Dinmore Lanelle sold for 16,000gns to lead the second major on-farm production sale from the Dinmore Herd of Paul Dawes, Dinmore Manor Estate held on Saturday 2nd July 2016. Dinmore Lanelle, an embryo calf, is by the stock sire Diamant, who was the 2014 Interbreed Champion at the Royal Welsh Show, and is out of the prolific Dinmore Elle who herself was breed champion at the 2010 Royal Welsh. Purchasing Dinmore Lanelle, and the sale’s top three prices, was Tommy & Aiden O’Harte who are new breeders from Leonards Island, Clones, Co Monaghan,

Republic of Ireland. Mr O’Harte, who is looking to build up a herd of around thirty to forty cows, owns Harte Peat Ltd a company that supplies a specialist peat product to the mushroom industry on a worldwide basis. Speaking after the sale Tommy O’Harte said that he had closely followed Limousin pedigree sales and shows in recent years and had been attracted by the quality of the Dinmore cattle to the eye and for their depth of breeding. A packed ringside audience saw some brisk bidding for the best of the animals forward with twelve lots in all making 5000gns including two at five figures and over. Auctioneer Paul Gentry of Newark Livestock Sales said

the sale had seen a tremendous amount of interest both in advance and on the sale day, with both new and established breeders looking to secure the best of the bloodlines available. “The cattle were keenly sought after and it is credit to Paul Dawes and the team at Dinmore that turned out an exceptional team of cattle.” The second top price selling for 11,000gns to the O’Harte’s was the July 2014 born Dinmore Juniper. Another embryo calf Dinmore Juniper is sired by Objat and is out of another prolific and show winning cow in the herd, Dinmore Daffodil. This heifer, with a Beef Value of LM+51, is a full sister to Dinmore Hitman which

sold to the Spittalton herd of Andrew Burnett in Stirling. At 8000gns, and another to Co Monaghan, was Dinmore Latena. This young calf, March 2015 born, is sired by Dinmore Goldeneye and is out of Dinmore Eathena whose granddam is the noted Dinmore Athena. Making 6800gns was another of the maiden heifers, Dinmore Lace. This April 2015-born heifer is by Wilodge Vantastic and out of Carmorn Voney, the double interbreed winner from Balmoral, making Lace a full sister to the 36,000gns Dinmore Fabulous. he inaugural show & sale on behalf of the North Eastern Limousin Cattle Breeders Club at Hexham in May peaked at 6,200gns for Haneve Joey, a Powerhouse Elite son, from Messrs Rochester and Murray, Tow Law, which sold to G & EA Herdman, Consett. Judge Jim Bloom, of the Scorboro herd, Yorkshire, chose as his champion the Hafodlas Garnedd son, Almande Jethro, from A Morgan & TC Johnson, Trimdon. It went on to sell for 3,800gns to Messrs Potts, Black Catterton. Standing reserve was Barrons Likeleylad from Willie Barron, Co Durham. This Mereside Godolphin son sold for 4,200gns to A Carse, South Ord. Topping the heifer trade was Kaprico Laurel from C Stafford, Hoghton le Spring, which sold for 2,000gns. The dispersal of the Rookerhill herd of pedigree Limousins on behalf of SF & EH Dale, Helperby, Yorkshire, topped at 2,300gns for the first calver Rockerhill Lily. WILODGE JETSETTER SELLS FOR 6500GNS AT WELSHPOOL • Wilodge bulls take top two prices

ilodge Limousin bulls from Christine Williams & Paul Tippetts, Lodge Hill, Shifnal, ruled supreme at the North West Midlands & North Wales Club show and sale at Welshpool, at the end of May, producing the top two sales at 6,500gns and 6,200gns. Sale leader was Wilodge Jetsetter, the first son of the herd’s stock sire, Gerrygullinan Glen, to be sold, with the dam being Wilodge Easternpromise, a Wilodge Vantastic daughter. This September 2014 born bull was purchased by the Quick family buying for their Loosebeare herd in Devon. Another Glen son made 6,200gns when Wilodge Jagameister a 20 month old bull out of one of the herd’s top brood cows, Wilodge Vavanelle – the great Ravenelle’s eldest daughter and a full sister to Wilodge Vantastic – was knocked down to the Fleethill herd of MJ Grey, Llandrindod Wells. Also at the 2400gns mark was Moonleaze Lovestruck a 15-month-old heifer by Loosebeare Golddust from Mr & Mrs JJ & BD Comer of Wiltshire.

eld at the Bakewell Agricultural Centre, and hosted by the National Beef Association (NBA), Beef Expo 2016 attracted in the region of 8,000 visitors for what had been hailed as a “Celebration of British Beef’’. The BLCS stand had the ‘gate to plate’ theme with one of the highlights being the terrific chiller of Limousin beef cuts displayed and supplied by local butcher Jonathan Maycock of Robin Maycocks Family Butchers. Jonathan, in association with the British Limousin Cattle Society, provided free beef rolls to a packed stand of visitors. The beef was from a Limousin cross heifer supplied by Ian Wildgoose that killed out at 330kgs in mid-April. Supreme Champion in the Commercial Cattle Section was awarded to the Welsh Heifer, Daisy Duke. Owned by John Williams, of Gwynedd, and bred by Stephen Nixon, of Cumbria, the Limousin x British Blue x heifer, born May 2015, weighed in at 450kg. Hightown Girl, owned by Tecwyn Jones, of Llanrwst, was Reserve. This homebred Limousin-sired heifer whose mother, Black Beauty, was a multiple champion was having only its first outing. Steer Champion was Dolphy Duke who is owned by Andy Nichols and his son, Will, from Wetley Rocks, Stoke-on-Trent. The 12-monthold, also Limousin sired, was bred by Rob Jones, of Builth Wells. Read All About it, a 375kg Limousin x heifer, owned by Elfed Williams, who bought it for a record breaking £7900 at Ruthin earlier this year from breeder Wendy Morgan, was Baby Beef Champion The Young Handler Classes for 12-16 years old was won by Matthew Clark of the Mayfields pedigree Limousin herd, Sheffield. The winner of the Young Handler Classes 17-21 years old was awarded to Emma Rathbone from Wetley Rocks, showing Queen Bee.

rocters Farm in Slaidburn were crowned supreme champion at the 2016 Northern Limousin Extravaganza at Skipton Auction Mart held in early May with their 12-month-old pedigree Limousin heifer Procters Lanita. She is an embryo calf sired by the 38,000gns bull Ampertaine Foreman and out of the six-year-old homebred cow Procters Fanita, a Haltcliffe Vermount daughter. The Reserve Supreme Championship fell to the Commercial Champion, a Limousin-sired heifer from Dave Thompson, of Pickering in North Yorkshire. His January-born Miss Moneypenny, acquired from Lincoln’s Phil Sellars late last year after the breeder had finished showing her as a calf, is by the Cogent sire, the Objat son Powerhouse Elite. The fixture, which goes from strength to strength and this year attracted a record 91-strong turnout – 61 pedigree and 30 commercial entries – was judged by John Philips, who runs the Gronw pedigree herd in Carmarthenshire and is Chairman of the British Limousin Cattle Society.

LBC held their annual National Stockjuding competition at the Royal Highland Show on Friday 24th June which was ably judged by Donald MacGregor of The Dyke, Kilsyth, Glasgow. Donald commented that he was impressed with the quality of competition throughout the afternoon. The competitors were asked to judge 2 classes of purebred Limousin cattle, one class of young bulls and one class of yearling heifers, and a class of commercial crossbred heifers. All those who participated gave reasons on the class of young bulls. YLBC AT COUNTRYSIDE LIVE – UPPERMILL, KINTORE, ABERDEENSHIRE

he Young Limousin Breeders travelled to Countryside Live held at Malcolm Allan’s Uppermill farm at Kintore, Aberdeenshire hosted by the Royal Northern Agricultural Society. This event was staged with the aim of educating the general

public about rural life and how food is produced, and included demonstrations such as sheep shearing, harvesting, butchery and cookery demonstrations, a farmers market and a forestry and countryside area. There was also an optional tour of Uppermill’s herd of 200 commercial cows

which are British Blue, Charolais, Limousin and Shorthorn crosses. The farm also has 200 commercial ewes and 150 acre of cereals. This was a great event for public, with plenty on show and great for us to let people see what YLBC get up to and recruit some new faces for upcoming

Neil Lloyd Clipping Demo at Dinmore

n interested group assembled at Dinmore on Saturday 21st May, by kind permission of Paul Dawes and Richard Bartle to participate in an informative and interactive stockjudging and reasons demonstration from Clive Davies, a clipping and preparation demonstration care of Neil Lloyd, and a fantastic alternative halter-breaking demo care of “Des” - Dinmore’s resident Donkey. The cattle were expertly prepared for us by Richard Bartle, with the help of Duncan Hazard, and Mary fed us ever so well! Thanks also go to Peter Kirton who took on the role of master judge, and along with Clive, also took the reasons. Stockjudging winners were 1st William Nicholls, 2nd Finlay Soutter and 3rd Isla Soutter.

Wm Dick and Sons (Ronick Herd) also donated 9 straws of semen to be sold in aid of YLBC funds at the National Show Sale held on Friday 29th July. We were able to auction 3 straws of Ampertaine Jamboree, 3 straws of Rathconville Eugene and 3 straws of Stephick Hero, which made a total of £370. YLBC also did the bar at the event which brought our total fundraising efforts for the summer to £1800. YLBC is looking forward to the Young Handler’s Competition in the autumn, but before this our very own Limousin Lads will fly to Toronto to take part in the 4H handling competition at the Royal Winter Fair in early November. The Limousin Lads were victorious at Young Show Stars in March and their prize is a trip to the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto and we wish them all the best.

ADAM FAMILY WELCOME YLBC TO NEWHOUSE

LBC held a second Open Day / Workshop at Newhouse of Glamis by kind permission of Bob, Kay, Andrew and James Adam on Sunday July 3rd which was well attended and very informative. Alison Glasgow kicked off the mini technical workshops with a demonstration of GEBV’s using Millington Ferarri as a live demonstration of the traits that have been recorded to produce the range of GEBV’s that Limousins are now able to produce. Millington Ferarri was a great example because his progeny were included in the original data set which

created the GEBV’s and thus enjoy higher accuracies. Paul Johnston provided a talk on using Artificial Insemination more efficiently in terms of timing and fertility. Alastair Stewart (Harbro) got us all involved in creating feed rations from home-grown straights, which even had some of the adults interested. John Graham, Mains of Burnbank, was the master judge for a two-class stockjudging of in-calf cows and heifers and the results were as follows: • Joint 1st on 100 points: Amy Lindsay, Stephanie Dick and James Graham • Joint 2nd on 97 points:

Adam McGookin and Ross Junor • 3rd on 93 points: Ryan Farquarson Millington Ferrari gave us a puzzle to guess his weight which was most closely guessed by James Graham at 1347 kgs (actual weight 1353 kgs) and Fraser Dandie accurately guessed Colin Duncan’s weight at 104 kgs. After all the intellectual bits were completed, we were treated to a herd tour of cows and calves in some splendid Angus scenery. It was great to see both the Limousin and Charolais herds co-existing alongside a re-introduced fledgling herd of

Angus at Newhouse. There were some interesting prospects to watch out for at sales over the next year or so! We are indebted to ABP for providing the steaks for our BBQ afterwards, Colin Duncan from Agri-Lloyd, Euan Hart from Crystalyx and Davidsons Supplies for goodies and gifts. Most especially our thanks go to Rob, Kay, Andrew and James for opening their farm, and the effort that is associated with providing a venue for such a successful day. ANGLO-IRISH COMPETITION T hree teams from this side of the water made their way to Kilkenny in Ireland, joined by teams from Northern Ireland and Eire, to contest the annual Anglo-Irish stockjudging competition which was this year held on the last day of the International Limousin Congress (ILC) hosted by the Irish Limousin Association. The venue was ideal as the ILC show took place the previous day at Cillin Hill, and many were able to get over early to see the show and participate in the buzz of the ILC. Under the scrutiny of judges Richard Bartle of the Dinmore herd, Richard O’Beirne from the Millburn herd and Kim Steele Nicholson from the Ballyrobin herd, the 17 competitors judged two strong classes of yearling heifers and yearling bulls and gave reasons on the heifer class. Reasons were marked on accuracy of statement, comparison of animals and style and ability. The competitors then participated in a showmanship class with animals that were unknown to them. The Irish team, consisting of Shannon and Aidan Kinahan, Owen Hester and Rachel Moloney took home an impressive 3rd successive victory. The top three scores counted towards their overall team score of 777 points. Taking a close second place was the Welsh team of Elfyn Wyn Jones, Angharad Williams and Lowri Fflur Davies with 774 points. Scotland took 3rd place, made up of Stephanie Dick, Andrew Adam and William Moir. England took 4th place represented by Emily Wilson,

Danny Escome and Joseph Mackley and Northern Ireland was a close 5th, represented by Ruth and Andrew Hammill, Adam McGookin and Louise Clark. Commenting on the competition, Judge Richard Bartle, who himself had been

judging the commercial section of the ILC show on Friday said “I felt that the young breeders did a great job throughout. Judging two classes that were particularly difficult, they coped very well with the conditions. The overall standard of all the competitors

was excellent and even the younger members coming through have a great future ahead of them. I would like to congratulate all the competitors and hope they continue to be involved in Limousin as they are a credit to the breed.” In the individual competition it was YLBC chairperson, Stephanie Dick, which came out with top honours representing Scotland. Stephanie runs her own Stephick Limousin herd alongside the noted Ronick herd of her father’s in Stirling. She is no stranger to the show ring and this is not her first success at the Anglo Irish finals, she has won numerous accolades across stock judging and showing competitions in recent years and she currently aims to keep raising the profile of Young Limousin Breeders.

JESSIEG HEADLINES AT ROYAL WELSH

The prizes were spread well across the countries and taking second place to Stephanie was Elfyn Wyn Jones who was representing Wales, followed closely by Shannon Kinahan who was representing Ireland. Keeping it in the family, Aidan Kinahan went on to lift top honours in the junior section of the competition. Aidan is another one that is no stranger to winning, he has had success in the past as he was placed 2nd overall at the finals last year. Aidan helps with the family’s prize winning Cush commercial herd. He was followed by team mate Owen Hester who took second place and Ruth Hamill from Northern Ireland taking a very commendable 3rd.

The YLBC would like to thank Paul Sykes for all his help, the coordinators of the YMA for their hard work organising the event and the stewards for their endless efforts in making sure the young Limousin breeders are so well supported at these events. essica Simms is truly making her own mark in the Limousin breed these days. Jess aspires to work in the Bovine Genetics industry but from the age of 15 Jess has competed in YLBC competitions across the UK with great success. In 2011, 2012 and 2013 we saw Jess take top prize at the National Stock judging event, finally turning 18 for her 2013 win she was then awarded a trip to represent the Limousin breed in the UK judging team at Agribition in Canada. The team were awarded a very commendable second place in what is a very prestigious competition. We have also seen Jess judge our YLBC calf show and young handlers held at Red Ladies Day on two occasions before she has moved onto now being asked to judge many county shows across the country. Not only is she judging shows but she is also winning championships at major shows! At the Royal Welsh Show this summer, on her 21st birthday, Jess took supreme champion with her bull Tunnelby Inca, under Judge Michael Fieldson. Jess and her brother Andrew are based in Cheshire and are the children of Nigel Simms of the noted Simbo herd. In 2013 Jessica bought her foundation female for the Jessieg herd, Tweeddale Icequeen, from Jonathan Watson. She calved in January having the first Jessieg prefix calf, Martini. After purchasing Icequeen, younger brother Andrew decided he would also like to be involved with the cattle also and they jointly purchased Inca, from Miss E A Thompson. The siblings hope to obtain a few more Limousin heifers over the next few years to expand this small herd and give Inca some new girlfriends! RESULTS FROM THE JULY 2016 EBV & GEBV UPDATE With the recent introduction of Genomic Breeding Values (GEBVs) for Carcase Traits, there are many more traits where leading animals in the breed can be identified. The following tables therefore report on sires and young bulls only. To widen the criteria to females, or to choose your own criteria, please go to www.basco. org, click on ‘Beef Search’ then ‘EBV Search’. You can then select the animal groups and traits you are most interested in.

July 2016 Leading Carcase Traits Sires The first GEBV evaluation for Limousin – and indeed the first of its kind for any beef breed in the UK – was in March this year. GEBVs are produced using animal measurements in combination with animal DNA to produce breeding values that can be used in exactly the same way as EBVs. The GEBVs now available for Limousin cover a range of eight Carcase Traits (Carcase Weight, Age at Slaughter and six primal cuts) and are based on weekly downloads of VIA measurements from Limousinbred cattle in five of ABP Food Group’s abattoirs in combination with individual animal DNA. A Retail Yield index is also produced; this is an economically weighted index comprising the breeding values of the six primal cuts (Fillet, Striploin, Rump, Silverside, Topside and Knuckle).

All of this means that producers of pedigree and commercially-bred Limousin cattle now have breeding values at their disposal to identify animals with the genetics to not only perform well to 400 days for the traditionally-measured traits, such as growth, but that will also go on and perform well through to slaughter. Irrespective of end market, the value of stock that can do this is considerable.

It is important to note that the new breeding values for the six primal cuts are adjusted to a standard carcase weight of 350kgs… In other words, animals with high GEBVs for these traits are animals with the genetics to produce higher weights of prime cut as a proportion of a 350kg carcase. The Carcase Weight breeding values will identify animals with the genetics to produce heavier carcase weights. And Age at Slaughter will identify the animals that get there quickly!

Animals are listed by their Age at Slaughter breeding value in descending order. The Calving Ease EBV for each animal is included as a point of reference only. Accuracy values are shown as % alongside each breeding value. Carcase Trait EBVs are made available as part of the process that produces the GEBVs. (The GEBVs use information from the animal’s DNA in their calculation. The EBVs do not, but both use the same slaughter records obtained from the abattoir). Where an animal’s accuracy % for the EBVs is greater than 50%, the values are automatically published for that animal on the Limousin database. The way in which both types of value should be interpreted and used is the same. 1

PROGRESS FOR LIMOUSIN IN BEEF FEED EFFICIENCY PROJECT T

he AHDB and DEFRAfunded Beef Feed Efficiency programme has reached a significant milestone by contracting two commercial farms to record feed efficiency traits. Over this Summer, specialised equipment has been installed on both farms to record feed intake and performance of growing beef cattle over the next two years. The data collected will be used to generate tools that will drive forward the genetic selection of Limousin cattle for feed use efficiency. The equipment installed will enable the recording of individual cattle intake over a 63-day test period, during which time liveweight gain and fat depth will also be recorded. Installation of the equipment has been completed and the first intake of cattle are completing their quarantine and acclimatisation phase, and soon to start the test phase. The farms are located in Dorset and North Yorkshire and will each have the capacity to finish the cattle after they have been through the feed efficiency recording unit, enabling valuable carcase data to be collected. “The location of the units offers a good geographical spread, as well as being in areas with significant numbers of cattle. This will be a real advantage in sourcing the cattle we need for the programme,” said Natalie Cormack, programme delivery manager. “The establishment of these units is an important step for the programme. It will not only increase capacity for recording, but also start the process of

He currently finishes mainly Angus-cross calves on contract. The second farm is located at Bedale in North Yorkshire, where Sam Webster currently finishes predominantly pure dairy bull calves on multiple units. “Both of these farms already have very well-run beef enterprises and provide the programme with a fantastic resource to carry out feed efficiency recording,” said Mrs

A growing ration based on grass silage will be fed to the cattle and they will be bedded on wood shavings to avoid the consumption of bedding material interfering with intake measurements. The records from these will be added to those of 500 animals which will have passed through the SRUC unit near Edinburgh by the end of this

MATERNAL FERTILITY AND CALF SURVIVAL – RESEARCH PROJECT UPDATE Cows’ inherent ability to calve on time every year and whether that calf survives are two key economic drivers in any type of breeding herd. Data from the Limousin Society’s ongoing Maternal Fertility and Calf Survival Project identifies why Limousin is the dominant suckler breed in the country. When compared to the next two most popular breed types:

The fourth and final main outcome will be a wide programme of knowledge transfer activity to help industry adopt these new tools. This will take a variety of formats; from online tutorials, to written materials, producer meetings and development of new apps for mobile devices.

• The heifer replacement rate for Limousin-sired dams is 5%, sitting at just 14%. • 2% more Limousin-sired dams in the UK are producing a 6th calf at 8 years of age • Calf mortality for Limousin-sired calves is over 1% lower throughout the UK Seeking to expand these differences more and present a complete package of high performance maternal and carcase trait genetics throughout the supply chain, the Limousin Society is part way through this important area of research. In partnership with Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC) and funded by Innovate UK and BBSRC, the project started in April and is due to finish in March 2017. There are four key outcomes:

The first is the use of national herd records from the British Cattle Movements Service (BCMS) to improve the breadth and depth of information on female fertility. Currently, the Limousin breed provides Estimated Breeding Values (or EBVs) for three key female fertility traits; Age at 1st Calving, Calving Interval and Longevity (ie how long females remain in the herd). These are currently derived from pedigree records only however and the aim is to widen the net and draw information from all Limousin-bred dams in the country to provide more accurate and robust predictions. The second is to develop Genomic Breeding Values (GEBVs) for Calf Survival. Records from all Limousin-bred calves in Britain will be drawn from the BCMS database to establish a Survival GEBV for calves between 20 days and 10 months of age. It will be the first of its kind in the UK beef sector and will enable producers to distinguish the bloodlines that leave higher proportions of live calves at weaning. The third outcome will be to produce Genomic Breeding Values (GEBVs) for Female Fertility The advent of these will enable producers to source breeding stock with more accurate predictions at much younger ages. The eventual performance of the animals is therefore more likely to be as the breeding values predict, making them a valueable part of the money-making decisions that herds have to consider.

Progress Four months on and the team at SRUC have now established the parameters that will be used in the genetic evaluation of each trait. This is the information we need to know for each trait in terms of its heritability (how much is passed to the next generation) and their correlations – or relationships – with one another. It has also been established for each trait the degree to which factors such as season, dam age, sex and hybrid vigour affect them. Now this information is in place, work can start on refining firstly an EBV evaluation (using the BCMS records only) and then a GEBV evaluation (using the BCMS records and also information from animal DNA). It has long been accepted that, for all beef breeds, the heritabilities of fertility and survival traits are low when compared to other characteristics such as growth and muscling…

This often begs the question why worry about selecting the right genetics if little is passed on? But the fact that these traits are poorly heritable makes them very difficult to improve when things go wrong and fertility is lost. Of all traits, they are therefore arguably the ones to protect and nurture the most; weaknesses or faults for characteristics that have high heritabilities are so much easier to put right. So this work will offer the beef sector unprecedented access to high performance Maternal and Calf Survival genetics. Crucially, by adopting a ‘GEBV’ approach – where the animal DNA is used as well as its own performance records – the breeding values can be produced to higher levels of accuracy at an early stage in an animal’s life, before important breeding decisions are made. The development represents further delivery of the aims set out in the Society’s Breeding Improvement Plan. The objective within this is to invest throughout the breed to ensure it continues to deliver market-focussed genetics in all trade environments. Superior now, even more so in the future.

LIMOUSIN BULL SELECTION THIS AUTUMN: WHAT’S IMPORTANT AND WHAT’S NOT Bulls are the biggest source of improvement from genetic selection. In a self-replacing suckler herd, the effects of the choices made can last anything up to 20 years, so getting it right and leaving nothing to chance is vital. Sires are typically selected in a combination of ways; by visual appearance, from individual records, and by using Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs). For traits where they are available, EBVs have greatly improved our ability to find the right sires. How have they done this? Because they incorporate records from an individual, its relatives, and its progeny and allows direct comparison between all individuals across all types of management and all years. For Limousin producers, EBVs are available for 14 different traits:

Care should be taken that selection for specific traits does not cause deterioration in others. For this purpose, Limousin producers have Breeding Indexes available to them. These also simplify selection for the large number of traits that some enterprises need to consider, as illustrated above. Indexes are single figures that incorporate a number of EBVs simultaneously. Beyond EBVs… Regardless of breeding system and marketing, bulls must have the ability to perform under prevailing production conditions. Selection of sires should consider structural soundness, which is evaluated visually. Structural soundness is important not only to ensure that a bull can function in the surrounding environment but also to prevent inherited structural defects in progeny which could adversely affect their ability to function. Potential reproductive ability is important in all sires; it is typically estimated in bulls by veterinary inspection, which would include a physical examination, semen quality examination and measurement of scrotal circumference. In selecting commercial bulls, actual scrotal circumference should be used, rather than the EBV. The EBV predicts early maturity of a bull’s heifer calves as well as the scrotal circumference of his male calves. But it is the actual circumference (in cm) that indicates a bull’s own reproductive potential.

rueman Jagger, the world record breaking Limousin sale bull, thrilled the crowds and powered to the Overall Supreme Championship title at the highly anticipated 2016 National Limousin Show held in the Exhibition Hall at Carlisle’s Borderway Market on Friday 29th July 2016. The 140,000gns (£147,000), two-year-old bull literally stood head and shoulders above his rivals and was brought out to perfection by Mike and Melanie Alford and their show team at Foxhill Farm, in Devon, on behalf of The Jagger Syndicate, which also includes the Dinmore, Whinfellpark and Swalesmoor herds respectively. Sold at Carlisle in October, 2015, by breeder Henry Savage and Sons, Altnamackin, Newry, Northern Ireland, Trueman Jagger is a son of Ampertaine Gigolo and is out of Trueman Grazia, a Haltcliffe Vermount daughter. Held every five years this was the first National Limousin Show since 2011 and, as the day and results played out in front of a packed ringside, the ultimate winner would once again come from the same breeding stable as the winner five years previously. In 2011 the two year old Trueman Euphonium, shown by the Savage family, had prevailed. Come 2016 and it was the turn of Trueman Jagger to take the top honours. In the run up to the event there had been increasing speculation as to whether Jagger

would make his first public appearance since his sale back in the autumn of last year. Come show time, and following a remarkably strong female section, Trueman Jagger took centre stage by winning his class and both the Intermediate Male and Overall Male Championships before lifting the Overall Supreme Championship and a prizewinning cheque of £1000. After overseeing some thirty classes and ten Championships over a very fluid but marathon six hour judging stint, the 2016 National Limousin Show judge Bruce Goldie of the highly noted Goldies herd at Townfoot, Mouswald, Dumfries said: “In a very high quality field the bull was just a clear, outstanding Champion and I had no hesitation in putting him up. He has muscle, power,

length and great locomotion. He’s a bull that potentially could have a significant influence across the breed.” Of the show generally Bruce Goldie said: “It was a great honour to be asked to judge and I feel very privileged to have done so at such a prestigious event and one that is only held every five years. The quality of the stock presented was exceptional right through the sections and in depth. It is easy to see why the breed is the UK’s number one and it is clearly in tremendous order across the country. The greatest credit is due to the breeders and exhibitors who through their endeavour and expertise turned out such a great display of cattle. I’m already looking forward to the 50th anniversary show!” Whilst the sun shone brightly on the ring

for the occasion, the shining stars of the UK’s most popular beef breed electrified the crowd comprising of Limousin breeders, commercial producers, and international visitors. Through a catalogue of over 250 pedigree animals the common consensus was that this was probably the strongest show of Limousin cattle in both quality and depth that had been seen in the United Kingdom since the breed was first imported into the UK some 45 years ago. Previous prize winning cattle combined with first time exhibits from all four corners of the UK to provide classes of exceptional quality reaching down to ten places. Beyond the pedigree judging and it was straight into a newly added feature, the ‘Sale of Champions’ (see separate report) that saw a top price of 40,000gns paid for the young bull Grahams Lorenzo from Robert and Jean Graham, Stirling. Judging simultaneously in another ring was the Commercial Classes and Championships under the eye of Northamptonshire based judge Frank Page, Lodge Farm, Elkington. Here, again amidst some fantastic competition, the Championship went to the heifer Black Beauty, a Keskadale Apollo daughter, from Mark Harryman and Sarah Warriner, Swainsea Barn Farm, Pickering. It was an all action Limousin day played out within a setting of lights, big screens, cameras and music, as the exhibitors competed for the prize fund pot of £20,000 and the prestige of the National Limousin Show classes and titles. The Overall Reserve Supreme came from the exceptionally strong show of females, which were eventually headed by Messrs Jenkinsons’ senior cow, Whinfellpark Glittered, from their farm at Whinfellpark, near Penrith. Glittered, by Wilodge Cerberus and out of Grange Orleans, had her Foxhillfarm Jasper calf at foot, Whinfellpark Misschief. With one of those quirks of show fate, this five year-oldcow is in calf to Trueman Jagger. Whinfellpark

Shown by Dougie McBeath on behalf of Doug Mash’s Brockhurst Herd, based in Buckinghamshire, she is a second calver by the £42,000 Wilodge Vantastic and out of Brockhurst Bolshoi herself a past Interbreed Champion at the Great Yorkshire and Limousin Supreme Champion at the Royal Highland. Of his Female Champion Whinfellpark Glittered, the judge Bruce Goldie commented: “She’s just a super cow. She has size, femininity, has good conformation, is free moving, and is doing a great job of her calf. This cow was hard to fault and headed a tremendous show of females that had outstanding depth in quality in every class.” The first two classes of Maiden Heifers

were born between September and December 2015 and set the standard for the day. The winner of the first class was Martin Conway’s Craigatoke Liquidgold, another animal over from Northern Ireland. The heifers born between May and August, 2015, proved to be one of the strongest sections in the show with the class being split into three. The first class was won by R and J Grahams’ Grahams Lizzie, which took the red ticket ahead of her embryo full sister, Grahams Lilly. Both heifers are by Claragh Franco and out of a flush from Grahams Coffee. Later in the day Grahams Lizzie went on to sell for 16,000gns. Third prize went to Procters Farms’ Procters Lafayette, a Goldies Fandango daughter. The next class of heifers of the same age was won by Chris White’s Frogmore Louise from his herd at Morton in the Marsh, Gloucestershire. This showy heifer is by Wilodge Cerberus and out of Ironstone Frangelica making her the same way bred as Frogmore Helen the herd’s Supreme Interbreed winning heifer at the 2015 Royal Welsh. John and Paul Rainey’s Claragh Lily from the Kilrea, Co. Derry, Northern Ireland deservedly took the Junior Heifer title. The

Claragh herd has only seven cows but is full of quality with Claragh Lily being a terrific example. She is again by the highly successful Wilodge Vantastic, out of Haltcliffe Avon, and has been unbeaten in her class since being shown as a calf. This year she won Reserve Overall in the Limousin Championship and went on to be Junior Interbreed Champion at the Royal Ulster. Standing second to Lily was another quality heifer Brockhurst Littlegem, who took the Reserve Junior Female title. From WJ and M Mash’s herd, she is by the same sire as the Overall Reserve Female Champion Brockhurst Heavenly and is out of the herd’s prolific Ronick McAinsi. Standing third in this very strong class was Martin Conway’s Craigatoke Liquorice. The next class in the same section was won

by Smiths of Bloxhams’ Ironstone Lavender, also by Vantastic and this time out of Bailea Umelia. JH Davies and Co’s Glyncoed Lillie took second place followed by Strawfrank Lucy in third from Allan Campbell. Messrs Jenkinsons’ Whinfellpark Lavender, by Gorrycam Hazzard and out of Whinfellpark Holly, led the next group in and Miss HC Burton’s Rempstone Ladyempress, stood second to her with Anside Lollipop taking third for Stephen Irvine. The final group of spring heifers was won by Gordon Hendry’s Powerful Kango. Kango was bred by PF Crowe and is by Haltcliffe Dancer out of Liscarn Fantastic. The final group of heifers was again split into two and these April to June, 2014-born heifers would dominate the intermediate age group. The first prize in the first of the two groups went to Poolehall Iris who subsequently took the Intermediate Female Champion title. Bred by Mr and Mrs N Matthews, Shropshire, she was expertly brought out and exhibited by Dougie McBeath and Sarah-Jane Jessop. Iris is by Haltcliffe Ben and out of Wilodge Flawless. Amongst a host of titles, Poolehall Iris has been Reserve Female Champion at The Royal Highland and Reserve Overall Champion at The Great Yorkshire this year already. Her full sister, Poolehall Isabelle, stood second to her for Robert and Jean Graham and Aileen Ritchie’s Goldies Inchantress took third. The first prize winner in the next group of the same age also took The Reserve Intermediate Champion. Ronick Jingo, who was bred by Ronald Dick at Mains of Throsk, Stirling and is by Rathconville Eugene out of Ronick Bingo, was bought privately last year by exhibitors W J & M Mash Ltd. Standing second to her was G and E Jones’ Trisant Jini, part of the winning Interbreed Team of Five at this year’s Royal Welsh, and Aileen Ritchie again took third, this time with Emslies Jiggywithit.

An impressive young cow class was won by Aileen Ritchie’s Emslies Ieryl. Bred by Harry Emslie, in Aberdeenshire, and purchased for 15,000gns in January 2014, this cow is by Procters Cavalier and out of Emslies Eryl. Second place went to DC Wharton’s Withersdale Ibelle and third to Pabo Icemaiden from WP Hughes and Son. The best in the females was left to last, when an outstanding show of senior cows in calf in milk and/or with calves at foot entered the ring. They demanded the attention of the ringside and the judge and were a great credit to the breed. “The final decision was very close,” said Mr Goldie. “These are all good milky cows with great bodies, which are clearly doing their job very well.” His hand came down twice in this Senior Cow class when the first two cows not only took the Senior Female titles but went on to take the Overall Champion and Reserve Females. Whinfellpark Glittered shone to be Female and Reserve Supreme Champion with Brockhurst Heavenly taking the Reserve Overall Female Title. Standing third in this strong class was P Dawes’s, Dinmore Glorious. Back in the bulls and Trueman Jagger was flanked in the Male Championship by

the Junior and Reserve Male Champion, Foxhillfarm Lordofthering, bred and exhibited by the Alfords and confirming an all-round celebratory day at the show. Lordofthering is a May, 2015-born bull by Guards Boomer, out of Bankdale Alice and was the Junior Male Champion earlier in the day. This young bull, now headed for the October sales, had previously taken Junior Male, Overall Male and Reserve Junior Inter-breed Champion at The Royal Highland this year. The Senior Male Champion, Gritstone General, looked in fine fettle as he took the title. Now a five-year-old and by Greensons Gigolo out of Millington Candy, he was exhibited by his breeders, David and Emma Armstrong, of Chorley, Lancashire and made an impressive addition to the final line up in the Male Championship. There was a strong show of young bulls forward and the first class in the ring was won by A Morgan and JC Johnsons’ Almande Lance, an October, 2015-born calf by Ampertaine Foreman out of Springsett Elegance. Second went to S Bowe’s Wiggonby Lord and third to Stourhead Lochan from H and JL Parker. The second group of junior bulls born between September and December, 2015, was headed by Kedzlie Farms’ Swalesmoor Liam. An October-born calf by Cloughhead Umpire and out of Nebo Favourite. A strong show of junior spring-born 2015 calves saw Mike and Melanie Alfords’ Foxhillfarm Lordofthering take not only the first prize but subsequently the Junior and Reserve Overall Male titles. Standing second to him was E and E Normans’ Norman Lumberjack, another Claragh Franco son, with D and R Durno and Sons’ Glenlivet Livit taking third. The second group in the same age bracket was won by Robert and Jean Graham’s

Grahams Lorenzo, which also took Reserve Junior Male Champion. Lorenzo is the same way bred as the Grahams’ heifers which won for the family earlier in the day and ultimately Lorenzo stole the show in the sale later in the afternoon when he sold with 100 straws of semen to the Wilodge herd for an impressive 40,000gns. Standing second to Lorenzo was another from the Grahams herd, Grahams Lamont. Again by Franco he is out of the French bred dam Cavaliere. Third prize went to Andrew Ewing’s’ Fairywater Len, a Harestone Grouse son. Michael Loughran’s Millgate Logo from Cookstown, Co Tyrone, took first prize in the next section of the age group with a June, 2015-born bull by Swarland Eddie and out of their Millgate Hilary cow. Second place went to Ian Nimmo’s Maraiscote Lexi. The final group in this age was headed by the Alfords’ Foxhillfarm Louisvuitton. Another of their string by Guards Boomer he is out of the aforementioned Foxhill Gracie. Second place went to Ian Nimmo’s Maraiscote Lothario and third to Stephen Irvine’s Anside Luigi. There was a strong show of quality bulls in the January to May, 2015-born line up and this, the largest section in the male classes, was split into four. The first class saw W P Hughes and Sons’ Pabo Legend take the red rosette. Legend is by Loosebeare Fantastic and out of Pabo Gabriel. This bull had headed a strong showing for the Pabo herd at the 2016 Royal Welsh Show where he picked up the Overall Reserve Championship. Standing second was Strawfrank Leroy from Allan Campbell and third Thorndean Farms’ Thorndean Liquidgold. The second class was won by E and E Normans’ Norman Legacy, a Claragh Franco son out of Norman Harmonica. Second place went to Stephen Irvine’s Anside Loki with J Oakes’ Millstone Ludo taking third. The next group of spring-born calves was led by Whinfellpark Luvabull from Messrs Jenkinson. He is by Anside Gigolo and out of Whinfellpark Geegee. Second was Anside Luke from Stephen Irvine and third, G and E Jones’ Trisant Limited Edition. Miss Linda Pidsley, from Upton, Payhembury, Honiton, Devon produced the class winner in the final group in the junior second when Uptonley Livingthedream, by her homebred bull Uptonley Invincibull took the first prize followed in second by Haulfryn Lieutenant from RG Whitley and P Dawes Dinmore Lionheart taking third. The intermediate bull class was of course dominated by the eventual Supreme Champion Trueman Jagger, with Malcolm Reid’s muscly Reids Jethro standing second to the Champion in his class and Norman Cruickshank’s Meenross Jameson taking third.

Black Beauty - Female and Overall Supreme Champion Commercial

BLACK BEAUTY LIFTS THE COMMERCIAL CHAMPIONSHIP FOR HARRYMAN AND WARRINER AT 2016 NATIONAL LIMOUSIN SHOW

t was a day to remember for Mark Harryman and Sarah Warriner, Swainsea Barn Farm, Pickering, North Yorkshire, when they lifted the 2016 National Limousin Show Overall Commercial Supreme Championship, and a cheque for £1000, with their heavyweight heifer Black Beauty. Weighing in at 581kgs this January 2015 born heifer came through the first of the heavyweight heifer classes to lift the Heifer Championship before moving on to take the Overall Supreme Championship. Judge for the day was the noted commercial producer Frank Page, Lodge Farm, Elkington, Northants who amongst other awards had himself won the 2015 East of England Smithfield Championship.

Black Beauty, out of a Lim cross cow, was originally purchased for £3600 at Middleton in Teasdale Suckled Calf Sale in November 2015 from the breeder John White, Rigg Farm and where she had stood Champion. Adding a nice touch, and making the National Show win even more special, Black Beauty is by Keskadale Apollo a bull bred by Mark Harryman along with his father Keith. In 2015 Mark and Sarah lifted the Supreme Championship at the English Winter Fair with their heifer Red Hot Honey which was also sired by a Keskadale bull, Keskadale Eyefull. At the time of purchase Mark said that he had one eye on the National Limousin Show with a trip to the Great Yorkshire prior to that. Through the summer the heifer had stood

second at North Yorks County Show, second at the Great Yorkshire, and Reserve Champion at Driffield Show. Speaking afterwards Mark Harryman said: “It’s a great honour to win the National Limousin Show and especially as it is only held every five years. The event is very much like a Champions League for Limousin sired animals and the standard of competition was extremely high. We have been delighted in the past to have won the Championship at the English Winter Fair and also the Champion Purbred and Reserve Overall at Smithfield. This win is very much right up there with those achievements.” Mark Harryman and his fiancée Sarah Warriner have lived at the 350 acre Swainsea

Barn Farm since September 2014. One hundred acres is down to grass with the rest being arable. Cattle wise they have ten pedigree Limousin cows run under their Hotshot prefix and have fifteen cross bred Limousin heifers. Mark and Sarah also lifted the Reserve Overall Steer title with the 586kgs Super Ted. This April 2015 born calf was also purchased at Middleton In Teasdale for £1200 on the same day as the Champion. Super Ted is by Elmtree Dance, a Goldies Apollo son out of a 7/8 Limousin cow, and was bred by AE Iceston, Barnard Castle, Co. Durham. Adding the final icing to the day Mark and Sarah also won the Pairs Championship with Black Beauty and their third prize bullock Diesel a Cwmlimo Eubank son. Commenting on his Champion the judge Frank Page said: “The cattle presented on

the day were full of quality across the board and were a terrific advert for the Limousin breed and its carcase qualities. The Champion animal was a real meat machine, just full of muscle, with a tremendous loin but still carrying a bit of style.” Following hard on the heels of the summer majors the Commercial Championships at the National Limousin Show saw many of the year’s prize winners from around the United Kingdom face off against each other. This included the classy J-Lo heifer from JCB Commercials, Northern Ireland. Arriving at the National Limousin Show she had already won a terrific 2016 double having lifted the Supreme Championships at both the Royal Ulster Show, Balmoral, and the Royal Highland Show at Ingliston. Going head to head with the eventual Champion from the word go J-Lo placed second in her class and followed Black

Beauty all the way through to take the Reserve Overall Supreme and Reserve Heifer titles. The 582kgs J-Lo was originally purchased last winter at Hilltown Mart for £1000. Sired by Norman Ely and out of a Lim x dam she was bred by P Fagan.

Taking the Male Championship was the 548kgs Billy Wizz, from Rachel Mudd and Craig Bentley, The Gables, Kepwick, Thirsk. Bred at Carry House, Hexham by Martyn Archer, this red May 2015 born steer was purchased for £2000 at a new Spring 2016

Sale held at Hexham & Northern Marts. Sired by the French bull, Ananas, this steer is out of a Limousin cross cow. Having exhibited at the primestock shows for some twenty two years now Craig and Rachel said that 2016 had perhaps been their most successful to date: “We have been strong supporters of the shows and have picked up plenty of second and third prizes and have had the Steer Championship at the English Winter Fair. 2016 has however been a terrific year for us and to win the Steer Championship at the National Limousin Show within this company is just fantastic,” said Craig. Craig and Rachel, who milk 160 cows and run some 360 sheep, are now aiming Billy Wizz at various shows before heading back to Carlisle for the Borderway Agri Expo and the winter show circuit. In 2011 Jennifer Hyslop, Balluskie Farm, Barhill, Girvan, Ayrshire won the Supreme Championship at the National Limousin Show with her lightweight heifer Mysticque. Five years on and she was back again to put up a strong defence of her title with her heavyweight heifer who was also called Black Beauty. After winning her class, Jennifer’s Black Beauty went on to win the Best Bred by Exhibitor award. This April 2015 born heifer, weighing 623kgs, is sired by Huntershall Gladiator. Jennifer also had another class win in the second class of heifers with the Waindale UFO sired Sassy Lassy bred by John Smith Jackson. The Reserve Exhibitor Bred title was won by Wilson Peters, Cuilt Farmhouse, Monzie, Crieff, Perthshire with his 592kgs heifer Tooshie Noir. This heifer, sired by Kype Elliote, had stood third in its class the Overall Supreme and Reserve Supreme Champions respectively.

ollowing on immediately at the close of the 2016 National Limousin Show, on Friday 29th July at Borderway Mart, was the ‘Sale of Champions’, an optional sale open to any animals that had placed first to third in their respective pedigree classes. Leading the way at 40,000gns, the highest sale price in the UK in the year to date, was the young bull Grahams Lorenzo from Mr & Mrs R & J Graham, Airthrey Kerse Dairy Farm, Bridge Of Allan, Stirling. Earlier in the day Grahams Lorenzo had won his class and had placed as Reserve Junior Male Champion in front of the judge Bruce Goldie, Townfoot, Mouswald, Dumfries. An embryo calf by the noted Claragh Franco, and out of the home-bred Grahams Coffey, the May 2015 born Lorenzo had previously won the Marks & Spencer Interbreed Beefbreeder title at this summer’s Royal Highland Show as well as numerous local show titles. Purchasing the bull was

the noted fifty cow Wilodge herd at Lodge Hill Farm, Park Lane, Shifnal, Shropshire. Commenting after the sale, Paul Tippets said: “We first saw Grahams Lorenzo at the Highland Show and were very impressed with him. He’s a young bull with power, presence and style. He has a tremendous head, body, backend and legs and has an excellent temperament. He’s an exciting bull with a lot of potential and we also like his back breeding and particularly on the dam line. ” The second top price was the 16,000gns paid for the heifer, Grahams Lizzie, which was another embryo calf from the Grahams herd and the same way bred as the top price bull. This heifer had also secured a first prize ticket in the third class of the day. Purchasing this 21st May 2015 born calf was Jonathan Watson for his Tweeddale Limousin herd at Bowsden Moor, Bowsden, Berwick upon Tweed, Northumberland. From the very first show class of the day the second prize heifer, Aultside Lambrini made 9800gns. This September 2015 born calf was bred and exhibited by Garry Patterson, Upper Forgie, Aultmore, Keith. Sired by the Vantastic son Loosebeare Fantastic and out of Spittalton Flush, a Hargill Blaze daughter, Aultside Lambrini was purchased by John Richardson, who farms the developing Mystyle herd at Ghyll House near Appleby. Another young bull from the Grahams herd, Grahams Lamont, made 5000gns when selling

to the Lagas pedigree herd of Michael Cursiter, Laga Farms Ltd, Arwick, Evie, Orkney. A second prize winner behind the Reserve Junior Male Champion, Grahams Lamont is by Claragh Franco the same sire as the day’s top price bull. May 2015 born this young bull is out of the French bred cow Cavaliere who also bred the 17,000gns Grahams Gayla. Shown in the commercial classes the shapely pedigree heifer Randerston Jasmine from Stewart and Lindsay Bett, Castleton Farm, Airth, Stirling also made 5000gns. By Emslies Galileo, and out of Randerston Gilly, this August 2014 heifer was purchased by J Neill, Crossgar, Downpatrick, Co.Down, N.Ireland. This heifer came to Carlisle with a strong show record behind her including being the Champion Pure Bred Animal and Lightweight Heifer Champion at the 2015 Scottish Winter Fair Livescot event. In an imaginative piece of sale marketing Dougie McBeath and Sarah Jane Jessop, Lower Greenyards Farm, Bannockburn, Stirling offered an open flush from their multi title winning and National Limousin Show Female Intermediate Champion, Poolehall Iris. This October born 2013 heifer is an embryo calf by Haltcliffe Ben and is out of the 27,000gns Wilodge Flawless. Purchasing the open flush at 5000gns was Ian Handley who runs the pedigree Gunnerfleet herd at Gunnerfleet Farm, Chapel Le Dale, Ingleton, Lancashire.

midst an action packed day at the 2016 National Limousin Show on Friday 29th July at Carlisle’s Borderway Mart, John Graham, Mains of Burnbank, took the top award in the Young Limousin Breeders competition. Throughout the day Young Limousin Breeders were involved within the pedigree Limousin classes exhibiting stock in their own right, helping the family team, or showing an animal for an exhibitor. At ringside the competition judge, Dorinda Dixon of the Roughley Herd, Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands, scored the Young Breeders for a combination of their presentation, appearance, handling skills, and showmanship. The Young Breeder competition was kindly sponsored by Phil Halhead of Norbreck Genetics. A fine turnout of 22 Young Breeders entered in all and in a very closely contested competition it was John Graham who was given the first prize and the title of 2016 National Limousin Show Champion Young Breeder. Commenting on her Champion, and all of the Young Breeders competing, the judge Dorinda Dixon said: “John handled the animals he was involved with extremely well throughout the day

and in different situations. He was very consistent in his ability and his presentation skills and smart appearance were really first class.” “There was little to separate the placed Young Breeders and all of the young exhibitors are to be congratulated for the very high standard of ability and showmanship. The atmosphere in the show hall was excellent throughout and the involvement of the Young Breeders very much added to the day. From what I could see it is clear that the Limousin breed has some excellent young breeders coming through for the future”. A familiar face in Young Limousin Breeder and Young Farmer events John Graham was the winner of the prestigious 2015 Highland Show Stockman of the Year. Earlier this year John teamed up with Andrew Adam and Thomas Illingworth to win the 2016 National Young Show Stars event at Malvern. As their prize for that the lads will jet off to Canada later this year. A strong Limousin breeder and supporter, the family farm at Mains of Burnbank is also home to 1000 sheep, of which 40 are pedigree Bluefaced Leicesters and owned in conjunction with his brother James.

In second place was Thomas Illingworth (South of Scotland); in third was Elfyn Jones (Wales); fourth place went to William Nicholls (Staffs); fifth place went to Ruth Hamill (Northern Ireland); with sixth going to Hannah Baldwin (Berkshire). The atmosphere from the show was second to none and the support for the Young Breeders in the raffle and throughout the day was fantastic and greatly appreciated.” “We hope to continue to raise the profile of the YLBC and continue taking the club forward with new ideas and more exciting competitions and I’d like to thank the Society for their support and for the continued backing that we receive.” In the weeks running up to the National Limousin Show and during the day itself the Young Breeders had been selling raffle tickets in a self-initiative to boost club funds. After a busy day at the show more than £1100 worth of tickets had been sold, a fantastic effort. The draw was made in the main show ring and the main lucky winners were: First prize was Andrew Hornall who won a trip to Portugal sponsored by The Ronick Herd Second prize was a five star hamper sponsored by The Gammie Family, Kirktown Garden Centre, which was won by Andrew Proctor Third prize was a herd banner designed by John Graham which was won by Richard Davidson Fourth prize was a ride on tractor sponsored by HRN tractors and Harestone herd which Gill McNab won. With exhibitors and visitors at times sweltering in the heat of the show hall a well-placed Pimms and general bar ticked all the boxes for many through the day. Again a share of the takings on the day was generously donated to the Young Limousin Breeders Club. Congratulations are extended to all of the Young Limousin breeders and everyone involved with the Club around the 2016 National Limousin Show. Very much the future of the breed the Young Breeders represented themselves so well on the day and were a high profile and vibrant part of a memorable day.

he in-calf heifer Glenrock Inclusive from local breeders Messrs DG Green & Son, Derriaghy Road, Lisburn, Co Antrim swept all before her when winning the Limousin Overall Supreme Championship on the opening day of the 2016 Balmoral Show, Belfast, Wednesday 11th May. Originally bred by Stephen Illingworth, Lockerbie, the November 2013 born heifer was purchased by the Greens for 14,000gns at the Glenrock Herd sale held in Carlisle in August 2014. Having first lifted the Female Championship the November 2013-born Glenrock Inclusive powered through to get the nod from the judge Martin Irvine of the noted Anside herd, Braehead Farm, Drummuir, By Keith, Banffs. Glenrock Inclusive is by the Nenuphar son Bremore Artist and is another embryo calf out of the renowned Glenrock Spangle. Capping a fine day for the Derriaghy herd the young bull Derriaghy Lincoln won the Junior Champion Bull award, Reserve Male Overall, and Reserve Junior Champion Overall. This April 2015 born calf is by Haltcliffe Vermount and is out of Derriaghy Hitopia. Hitopia is out of Lenagh Utopia who is the mother of the 22,000gns Derriaghy Enfield who the Greens sold at Carlisle in 2010. The aim at this stage is to point Derriaghy Lincoln towards the BLCS October Sale at Carlisle. The ‘Green team’ comprises of father David along with the ‘showman’ Philip and further sons Richard, Andrew, and Ethan. Very much a local win the Greens ten-cow herd lies only some ten minutes away from the showground. Speaking at the close of the judging David Green said: “It’s an unbelievable feeling and a great honour to win what is our local show and the foremost show in Northern Ireland. We were fortunate enough to place Reserve Overall with Enfield in 2010 but this win now tops that.” Asked about forward ambitions David said that this win could probably only be topped by winning it again with a homebred animal.

Placed as Reserve Overall Supreme Champion was the January 2015 born maiden heifer Claragh Lily from John and Paul Rainey, Kilrea, Co. Derry. Sired by the noted Wilodge Vantastic she is out of Haltcliffe Avon described as the seven strong herd’s ‘best cow’. Scooping numerous awards Claragh Lily picked up the Reserve Supreme Overall; Exhibitor Bred Championship; Junior Champion; Junior Female Champion; and Reserve Overall Female Champion. successful female sale at Carlisle five days previously where they had attained a top price of 18,000gns for a maiden heifer who is a full sister to Claragh Lily. Commenting John Rainey said: “To do so well at Balmoral Show feels just fantastic. Very much one for the future Lily is the best heifer we’ve ever bred.” In the Interbreeds held over the following two days there was to be further success for Claragh Lily and the Limousin breed. On day two the judge Arwel Owen, Beef Development Manager with Genus, gave Lily the nod as the Overall Interbreed Junior Beef Champion of Champions. On the Friday, in front of judge for the day Neil Lloyd, Leominster, Claragh Lily teamed up with Ardnacrusha Jaguar and Pointhouse Ladymary for an imposing Limousin team of three that went on to win the Interbreed Beef Group Championships Part of the winning Interbreed Group and taking the Limousin Overall Male Championship in his showing debut at Balmoral was Republic of Ireland breeder Donal Moloney, Roowest, Co Clare with Ardnacrusha Jaguar from his twenty five cow herd. This November 2014 born bull is another by Wilodge Vantastic and is out of the French bred female Etole bought from KBS in France. In 2015 Jaguar placed as Reserve Overall Male Champion at the prestigious Tullamore Show and Donal noted that the bull had really done well since then. Beyond Balmoral Ardnacrusha Jaguar was setting his sights on the Irish National Show due to be held within the World Limousin Congress in Ireland in August.

The Reserve Junior Bull award went to D&R MacFarland, Comber Road, Tirquin, Omagh with the February 2015 born Rayderjem Legend. This young bull is by Anside Flint and is out of the Ampertaine Commander daughter Trueman Houston. Making a mark at the show for the second year in a row was Michael Diamond along with his eleven-year-old son Kile, from Carhill Road, Garvagh, Co Derry. This year the herd won the Reserve Junior Heifer award with the May 2015 born Pointhouse Ladymary who then went on to feature in the winning Interbreed Group. This heifer is by the AI bull Gerrygullinane Glen and is out of Carhill Floosie. Last year Pointhouse Jewell took the Junior Female Championship and Junior Reserve Overall. There was more success for this twentycow-herd when Pointhouse Lordgratham won the Beef Bull Interbreed Performance Championship in front of the judge Arwel Owen on the Thursday. Sired by Plumtree Fantastic this September 2015 born bull is out of the Wilodge Cerberus daughter Pointhouse Harvest. In the Commercial Classes held on the Thursday Limousin sired heifers took both the Junior Beef & Junior Reserve Beef Championship spots from the judge Berwyn Hughes, Cwmhedryd, Wales. Lifting the Junior Championship was the December 2014 born heifer JLo owned by JCB Commercials, Newtownards. This heifer was purchased last winter at Hilltown Mart for ÂŁ1000 and is sired by Norman Ely out of a Lim x dam. JLo also won the Medallion Plaque for the Best Commercial Beef Heifer. The heifer Pocahontas owned by Dermot Small, Kilkeel, took Reserve Spot in the Medallion Plaque. Also December 2014 born, she is sired by Swarland Eddie and is out of the dam Strathearn Cundice. Derek & Mark Maxwell, Ballinagare, Ireland won the Medallion Plaque for Best Commercial Beef Steer with the April 2015 born Rocket. This calf is sired by Brooklands F0959 and is out of the dam named Black Diamond. n sunny warm conditions, Whinfellpark Glittered of Messrs Jenkinson, Penrith, Cumbria, shone through a high quality field to win the Limousin Supreme Championship on the opening day, 23rd June, of the 2016 Royal Highland Show held at Ingliston, Edinburgh. A 2011-born cow by the herd stock sire Wilodge Cerberus, and with an April-born heifer calf at foot, she came through from a powerful Limousin entry of 130 animals, the largest in the beef section, for judge for the day Stephen Illingworth of the noted Glenrock Herd at Howgillside, Eaglesfield, Lockerbie. Whinfellpark Glittered is out of Grange Orleans a cow purchased from an onfarm production sale from the herd of George Smith, Daventry, Northants. Commenting on his Champion, Stephen Illingworth said: “This young cow caught my eye straight away and won her class on the first look! She’s just full of style, class and presence. With great femininity she

still had width and power. With plenty of milk she was doing a very good calf. This was a tremendous all round cow, not too extreme, very correct and with no real faults. Whinfellpark Glittered is very much the type of female to build a herd around.” On her way through to the title Glittered also picked up the Limousin Female Championship and the special prize for Best Animal Bred by Exhibitor. Come the Saturday Whinfellpark Glittered was placed as the Reserve Supreme Overall in the blue riband Individual Interbreed by Gerald Smith, Fordoun, Laurencekirk who described her as a “tremendous cow” with a “lovely udder for the young calf”. With a nice little bit of connection with the 2015 Show Glittered’s calf at foot, Whinfellpark Misschief, is by Foxhillfarm Jasper the Supreme Champion from last year who was shown by Michael and Melanie Alford and is now the stock bull in the Whinfellpark herd.

A fortnight ago in a ‘dry run’ Whinfellpark Glittered had made her show debut at Cumberland Show here she won the breed championship, interbreed, and champion of champions titles. For the 120 breeding female Whinfellpark herd, split into autumn and spring calvers, the Highland Show win was the highest show accolade to date and came in their fourth year of showing at Ingliston with a little gap prior to 2015. Speaking afterwards Allan Jenkinson said: “It has always been an ambition to win a major Royal title and as such I am thrilled and delighted to have lifted the title at the 2016 Royal Highland Show. The standard of competition within the Limousin section is always so high and to win in such company is fantastic.” An excellent Whinfellpark team marshalled by stockmen Colin Soutter and Craig Douglas met with further success when Whinfellpark Lavender won the Junior Female Championship from within what Stephen Illingworth described as an “allround outstanding show full of exceptional

youngstock with a lot of potential.” The April 2015 born Lavender is by the 26,000gns Gorrycam Hazzard and is out of the Lowerffryd Empire daughter Whinfellpark Holly. Whinfellpark Lavender came through the first class of the day which featured fourteen quality young Limousin heifers. Rounding off a fine opening day the trio of Whinfellpark Lavender, Whinfellpark Glittered, and Whinfellpark Jade added to the trophy haul when winning the Limousin Group of Three title. Another fine show was had by the dynamic duo of Dougie McBeath and Sarah Jane Jessop, Lower Greenyards Farm, Bannockburn, Stirling who took the Reserve Supreme Championship and Reserve Female Championship with their October 2013 born heifer Poolehall Iris. This heifer, bred by Nigel Matthews, Shropshire is by Haltcliffe Ben and an embryo calf out of the 27,000gns Wilodge Flawless. With a strong show record behind her Poolehall Iris is the reigning Scottish Limousin Grand Prix Champion, a title that she

won at Turriff Show and where she also picked up the Overall Supreme Beef Championship, and Champion of Champions. In 2016 she has already won the Limousin Championship, Overall Interbreed, and Champion of Champions at Ayr Show, having originally purchased at Red Ladies in December 2014 for 4800gns. Of his Reserve Champion Stephen Illingworth said: “Again this heifer was a very easy winner in her class and through to the Reserve Overall title. She is super clean, long and has outstanding muscle. She has all the makings of being a real bull breeder.” On Saturday morning, and paired with the class winning Dinmore Jollygood from Redpath Farms, Poolehall Iris placed third in the Interbreed Pairs judged by Jim Goldie, Townfoot, Dumfries. Taking the top spot as Overall Male Champion, Junior Male Champion, and Overall Junior Champion was Foxhillfarm Lordofthering for Mr & Mrs MJ Alford, Foxhill Farm, Blackborough, Cullompton, Devon. Lordofthering emerged through the strongest class in the male section that saw thirteen young bulls in all shown. A 2015-born bull by Guards Boomer, he is out of Bankdale Alice, also dam of the aforementioned Foxhillfarm Jasper and Foxhillfarm Ivy who took Supreme Champion and Reserve Champion honours at the Highland Show in 2015. Jasper subsequently sold to Messrs Jenkinson for 32,000gns. Guards Boomer is also the sire

Reserve Junior Male and Overall Reserve Champion Male on the day, and from the same bull class as the Champion, was the upstanding young bull Grahams Lorenzo from the sixty cow herd of Messrs R&J Graham, Airthrey Kerse Dairy Farm, Bridge Of Allan, Stirling. An AI calf by the noted Claragh Franco, and out of the home-bred Grahams Coffey, ‘only a whisker’ divided this smart young bull from Lordofthering in the top slot. Lorenzo had previously secured breed and Championship titles at both Stirling and Cargunnock Shows with a first place also at Drymen Show. Here this May 2015 born bull went on to lift the Interbreed Beefbreeder title in front of judge Michael Robertson, Fodderletter Farms, Ballindalloch, Banffshire. In the always keenly contested Commercial Cattle section it was JCB Commercials from Northern Ireland that took the Overall Supreme Champion title with their December 2014-born heifer, JLO. Sired by Norman Ely and out of a LimX dam this heifer was purchased last winter at Hilltown Mart for £1000. Making it a win double success this season, JLO has previously secured the commercial title at RUAS Balmoral Show held in May. oug Mash of Torrington Farm, Buckinghamshire scooped the Limousin Overall Supreme Championship and went on to take the Beef Individual Interbreed Championship with his Wilodge Vantastic daughter, Brockhurst Heavenly, at the 2016 Great Yorkshire Show on Tuesday 12th July. The September 2012-born Brockhurst Heavenly is rearing her second calf within Doug’s 80-strong Limousin herd, which was established in 1988 with purchases from Tanhill and Upland sales. This was the cow’s first major show win however her dam, Brockhurst Bolshoi, is a past interbreed champion at the Great Yorkshire. Continuing the Mash family’s success on the day, Heavenly’s niece, Brockhurst Littlegem, came runner-up in the class for heifers born on or after 1 January 2015.

Regular exhibitors it was only by chance that Doug and his team made it to this year’s Great Yorkshire. “By the time we sent our entry in, all the stalls were thought to have been taken,” he said. “We only found out the Friday before that space would be available, so it was a rush to get ready. But we’re obviously highly delighted with the result.” Judging the Limousin classes was Dafydd Griffiths, who runs the noted Mynach herd in Whitland, Wales. “Brockhurst Heavenly is very true to type, with a big frame and a leg in each corner,” said Mr Griffiths. “She also has a sweet head and was shown with a very good calf at foot.” Later in the day Brockhurst Heavenly

floated to the show’s Supreme Individual Beef Interbreed award when being put up by the judge Willie Seels of Doncaster. It was another show where the quality of the Limousin breed shone brightly through resulting in a further haul of Interbreed titles. As well as the Individual Interbreed, Limousins won the Senior Team Interbreed, the Junior Interbreed, the Reserve Junior Interbreed Team, and the Commercial Steer Championship. Ben and an embryo calf out of the 27,000gns Wilodge Flawless, the October 2013-born Iris had been purchased for 4,800gns from Nigel Matthews of Shropshire at the Red Ladies Derby at Borderway Mart, Carlisle in 2014. Iris has already collected a string of show rosettes and awards, including the 2015 Scottish Limousin Grandprix title and Overall Interbreed Championship at Turriff, as well as the Reserve Supreme Championship and Reserve Female Championship at this year’s Royal Highland. The ‘dynamic duo’ of McBeath and Jessop also clinched the Male Championship and Reserve Overall Junior Championship with Woodroad James, a son of Woodroad Donald born in July 2014. He was another shrewd purchase, having come from Noel Fennessy’s much-admired herd in Castleconnell, County Limerick. James won a Reserve Championship at Ayr this year and was Senior Male Champion at the 2016 Scottish Limousin Grandprix. Taking the Reserve Male Championship was James Tennant Ltd of Manor House Farm, Fraisthorpe, Bridlington, North Yorkshire. The family runs a 150-cow suckler herd alongside a couple of dozen pedigree Limousins, which include the February 2015-born Lissett Lorean, by Attirant and out of the Kaprico Davelle daughter Homebyres Gainsi. This bull has made three show outings and been placed every time, winning the Reserve Male Championship at Lincoln Show and the Overall Limousin Championship at Malton. He also won a special prize at the Great Yorkshire as the Best British Limousin animal exhibited by a North Eastern Limousin Breeders’ Club member, as well as the Best Junior Exhibitor

Tony Booth’s Millgate Fame-sired Sevengun Jellee came away with the Junior Championship and went up against stiff competition to take the Junior Interbreed Championship, which was also judged by Willie Seels of Doncaster in South Yorkshire. The November 2014 heifer, which is a member of Tony’s herd at Hardwick Hall Farm, Aston in Sheffield, is no stranger to success, having won the Overall Limousin Championship at last year’s English Winter Fair in Stafford. Jellee also took the Great Yorkshire title for the best animal under two years old on 1 July 2016, which is the Colin Alderson Memorial Trophy, offered by the North Eastern Limousin Breeders Club. Her dam is Hartlaw Erotica, which was purchased at Borderway Mart, Carlisle three years ago. The Senior Interbreed Beef Group Championship won by the Limousin team was again judged by Willie Seels of Doncaster. The group was made up of Brockhurst Heavenly (WJ and M Mash); Poolehall Iris (McBeath and Jessop); Woodroad James (McBeath and Jessop); Sevengun Jellee (AH Booth). A formidable team and worthy winners! The Limousins also picked up the Reserve award in the Junior Interbreed Beef Group Championship. This team comprised of Ironstone Laura (Smiths of Bloxham); Ironstone Lavender (Smiths of Bloxham); Gascoines Lotsoffaith (Gascoines Group) and Gascoines Lyla (Gascoines Group). In the commercial classes, judged on the Wednesday, the Champion Steer was the April 2015 Limousin cross forward by R Mudd and CN Bentley, from The Gables, Kepwick, Thirsk in North Yorkshire. Judge was G Ketley of Colchester, Essex, who gave the blue ticket to a Limousin cross steer born in April 2016 and shown by J Hyslop of Balluskie Farm, Barrhill, Ayrshire.

here are many ways to celebrate your 21st birthday and winning the Overall Supreme Limousin Championship on the opening day of the 2016 Royal Welsh Show at Llanelwedd, Builth Wells, probably ranks right up there with the best of them! That was the story of the day as Jess Simms, Hulse Farm, Hulse Lane, Lach Dennis, Northwich secured a memorable Championship win with her three-year-old bull Tunnelby Inca. It was very much a family day and one for the young breeders as Jess showed the bull along with her younger brother Edward aged 15. Tunnelby Inca was bred by Miss Ann Thompson, Beechwood, School Lane, Onneley, Nr Crewe, who also previously bred the 2003 Royal Show Champion Tunnelby Scallywag.

He is by the Saphir son Hafodlas Abel and is out of Tunnelby Nectar a daughter of the famous Broadmeadows Cannon. In 2014 Jess had shown the bull for Miss Thompson and had thereafter purchased him, along with Edward, for her new JessieG pedigree herd. After a year off in 2015 from the show ring the Royal Welsh marked his first outing of the year. Flicking through the Limousin record books suggests that Jess and Edward may be the youngest ever exhibitors to win a Supreme Limousin Championship at one of the summer ‘major’ Royals. With great timing and one of those remarkable quirks of fate, the opening day of the show, 18th July, was also Jess’s 21st birthday. What a way to get the fabled ‘key to the door’! A real Limousin enthusiast Jess’s father Nigel and grandfather Graham have also met with many successes over the years with the noted Simbo herd. Taking the day very much in her stride an elated Jess said afterwards: “It’s been such an amazing day. I had a personal ambition in mind to show at a ‘major’ by the time I was 21 and to do well. However to win the Supreme Championship, and on my birthday, is way beyond any expectations. Edward and I are just really over the moon’. There was further success on the Tuesday when Tunnelby Inca was part of the winning Interbreed Team of Five, the second year in a row that the breed has won this award, and also when standing Reserve in the Fitzhugh Pairs Interbreed with Trueman Grazia. Tapping out the Supreme Champion, after some four and a half hours of judging the largest breed entry at the show, was Michael Fieldson of the noted Fieldsons pedigree herd based at Poplar Farm, Corringham, Gainsborough, Lincolnshire. Commenting on his Champion Michael said: ‘He’s just a terrific evenly fleshed bull with both power and shape and he moved extremely well throughout the day. Very much a modern Limousin he’s a bull that could do a good job both in pedigrees and commercials and for today’s market. The Champion also had a terrific temperament as did all of the cattle presented today which is a

great credit to the breeders’. It was also a more than memorable day for the Pabo herd of Peredur and Llyr Hughes, Fferam Gyd, Llanbabo, Rhosgoch, Anglesey. Hot on the heels of the Champion, their young January 2015 born bull Pabo Legend took the Overall Reserve Supreme, Reserve Male, and Junior Male titles, before scooping the Individual Junior Interbreed Championship on the final day of the show. Pabo Legend is sired by Loosebeare fantastic and is out of Pabo Gabriel. Gabriel is also the mother of Pabo Icemaden, the September 2013 born Wilodge Drummer daughter, who later went on to win her heifer class; the LBV Thomas award for the best exhibitor bred heifer from a breeder residing in Wales; and was part of two winning Interbreed teams. Pabo Gabriel’s grandmother is Lowbarn Benelopa who was bought at sale for 1400gns. A delighted Llyr Hughes, who was ably backed up on the day by stockman Gareth Pugh and showman Robin Roberts, said that the 25 breeding female herd had been built up from a low cost base but with animals full of quality. In what was by far their best showing performance to date Llyr Hughes said that it very much an ongoing aim to look at continuous improvement within the herd and built around quality bloodlines. A quick roll call of titles won by Pabo at the show included: Reserve Supreme; Reserve Male; two firsts in class; the LBV Thomas award; the Limousin Pairs; the Limousin Group of Three; Junior Bull Interbreed; Exhibitor Bred Group of Three Interbreed; and member of the winning Interbreed Team of Five. Quite a show! In the Limousin females it was the noted Trueman Grazia owned jointly by Paul Dawes and Mary Cormack and Richard Bartle, Dinmore Manor, Hereford, who took the Female Championship. The five-year-old Grazia is sired by Haltcliffe Vermount and is out of Cookstown 1425. Bred by Henry Savage and Sons, 70 Skerriff Road, Altnamackin, Newry, Co Down, Trueman Grazia is the mother of the world record breaking bull Trueman Jagger who the Savages sold for £147,000 at Carlisle in October 2015. was also the top Reserve Champion Interbreed Pair price animal at the Red Ladies Limousin Sale at Carlisle in 2012 when she sold for 14,000gns to the Dutch company Cowporation. In a private deal she was subsequently bought and brought back to the UK in late 2015 and has been shown successfully this summer. Again, Grazia was part of the winning Limousin Team of Five, as well as being Reserve in the Fitzhugh Pairs along with Tunnelby Inca. Paul Dawes chalked up another win for the Dinmore herd when lifting the Junior Female Championship with the January 2015 born Dinmore Lizelle. This embryo calf is by the herdâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s stock bull Diamant and is out of the 2010 Royal Welsh Champion Dinmore Elle. Taking the Reserve Female Championship was the shapely Nebo Janice from the Reddragon herd of Tomos Price, Pencraig Farm, Trelech, Carmarthen. This October 2014 born heifer, sired by the 32,000gns Huntershall Gladiator and out of Nebo Bunny, was bred by Mei Thomas, Bryn Farm, Nebo, Llanrwst, Conwy. Back in 2008 Nebo Bunny was herself the Reserve Champion Female at the Royal Welsh Show. At the 2015 Red Ladies Sale at Carlisle, Nebo Janice had been purchased by Tomos Price for 5500gns. It was another successful show for the Devon based breeders Michael & Melanie Alford, Foxhill Farm, Blackborough, Cullompton. They secured the Reserve titles in both the Junior Female and Junior Male sections and picked up the Females of the Future Pairs Interbreed Championship. The Reserve Junior Female award was won by the embryo calf Foxhillfarm Looksthepart. This August 2015 born calf is by Guards Boomer and is out of the multi title winning Foxhillfarm Gracie who won the Royal Welsh Supreme Championship in 2013. On the Thursday, Foxhillfarms Looksthepart teamed up with

It marked a fine summer for this young bull who in June had won the Male Championship, Junior Male, and Overall Junior awards at the 2016 Royal Highland Show. From a strong base the Limousin breed was again well to the fore in the Interbreed competitions winning the Team of Five; the Junior Bull; Females of the Future Pairs; the Exhibitor Bred Group of Three; Reserve in the Fitzhugh Pairs; and Champion and Reserve in the Commercials. As well as Tunnelby Inca, Truemna Grazia, and Pabo Icemaden, the other members of the winning Team of Five, judged by David Lewis, Llandysul, Sir Gaerfyrddin, were Trisant Jini and Dinmore Jestelle. Trisant Jini is from the herd of G&E Jones, Ty Gwyn, Llantrisant, Holyhead, Anglesey. February 2014 born this heifer is by Wilodge Fastrac and is out of Trisant Ffiffi, a daughter of the famous Ronick Hawk. This very smart heifer had stood second in her class. From the same class, Dinmore Jestelle from Paul Dawes, completed the Team of Five. May 2014 born, Jestelle is another by the herd stock bull Diamant and is out of Ampertaine Estelle.

Shown with her October 2015 born bull calf at foot, Ronick Legend by the famous Broadmeadows Cannon, the Championship win followed on from Intrigue winning her class at the Highland Show. As well as the Overall Supreme Championship other titles collected on the way included the Grandprix Senior Champion and Overall Female Champion. For good measure this first time calver then went on to secure the Haddington Show Reserve Interbreed title. Commenting on his Champion and Reserve Mr Aitken said, “the cow and the young bull were the two outstanding animals on the day. The cow, in particular, was recently calved with a big strong bull calf at foot. She was in nice condition without being excessive. The young bull complemented her with both being very breedy type animals”. Reserve Overall Champion was the March 2015 born Goldies Comet son, Strawfrank Leroy, out of the Dolcorsllwyn daughter Gunnerfleet Fassuna, from Alan Campbell, Strawfrank Farm, Carstairs Junction, Lanark. Strawfrank Leroy, who stood third in a very strong class of young bulls at this year’s Highland Show, also picked up the Grandprix Overall Male and Junior Champion tickets. he annual NI Limousin Championship was held at Antrim Agricultural Show grounds on Saturday 23rd July and again the event was well supported by local breeders and spectators. The Overall Championship winner was the Female Champion Shanhill Jodie bred by L Crilly, Newry who had caught the eye of judge Sarah Jane Jessop from Stirling, Scotland. Shanhill Jodie is sired by Ampertaine Elgin and is out of dam Limo Fay a Wilodge Cerberus daughter.

he Limousin is unbeatable for producing calves that can earn a premium price at that early age, says Cumbria suckled calf producer Andrew Brown who runs 100 suckler cows with his brother Mark at Asby Hall near Appleby. “Our calves have very little cost on them before they’re sold.

Suckler margins are tight so it’s important to get as much natural growth from a calf as you can without additional cost. “Our spring born calves are probably only eating about £40 worth of feed between August and the time we sell them in November. If we have to over-winter a housed calf from November to the suckled calf sale in May it adds on another £200£250 a head – even though it may be worth a bit more” The Browns farm 450 acres on

land running to 1000ft and keep 700 Swaledales and 100 North of England Mules alongside their successful suckler herd. The farm also carries 30 pedigree Bluefaced Leicesters under the Asby Hall prefix and has sold tup lambs to £9000. Mule gimmer lambs bred at Asby Hall have won the championship at the Kirkby Stephen NEMSA sale for four years out of the last six. Andrew and Mark are well known for producing top quality

suckled calves and the prices they achieve each autumn is testament to the reputation they have achieved over the years with discerning buyers. Calves bred at Asby Hall regularly top the main suckled calf sale at Kirkby Stephen Auction Mart – a sale that always attracts many of the season’s most sought after calves. The herd’s record price is £2750 paid for an eight month British Blue sired heifer bred out of a Rossignol sired Limousin cow. The calf went on to claim the supreme championship at the noted primestock show at Wigton in west Cumbria the following year. Recent sale toppers at Kirkby Stephen have sold for £2000 and £2300. The £2000 bid came for Kirkby Stephen’s 2013 supreme champion - an eight-month-old Limousin cross heifer sired by the Rocky son Gallaber Dynamic that the Browns bought from the Sedgwick family of Burton-inLonsdale, Ingleton. “We bought Dynamic when he came up for sale at Bentham at the market’s June Cattle Fair in 2010. He’s registered but had torn his ring out. “He was a tremendous bull on the day and he’d have made a lot more than the £3000 we paid for him if he’d have been offered at a breed sale at Carlisle. “He’s done a fantastic job for us. He’s a really thick bull all round but he has a bit more stretch than some of the bulls

we’ve used in the past. He’s produced some top quality calves for us as well as the champion at the Kirkby Stephen sale,” says Andrew. Cows at Asby Hall calve from early March to late May having run with two Limousin bulls and one British Blue. “We buy in around twelve suckled heifer calves ranging from eight to twelve months old from good herds every year to rear up into female replacements for ourselves. We never buy cows

with calves at foot as we find it's more cost effective to have a system of buying in young heifers at around £1000-£1200,” commented Andrew. Limousin bulls are used on 70 of the Limousin x British Blue cows. “The best calves for the show job are threequarter Limousin and one quarter British Blue,” says Andrew. Cows are housed from midOctober and run in strawed cubicles and fed an ad-lib silage and straw diet.

“We add the straw to keep some control over the cows' body condition and to avoid them getting too “good” by the time they calve,” explained Andrew. The cows are scanned a month after housing. “We re-stocked with beefcross cows after foot and mouth instead of the dairy crosses we used to have. A lot of people said they wouldn’t have enough milk but we’ve worked away with them over the last 15 years and we’ve never found that to be a problem.

L I M O U S I N FEATURE Andrew went on to say, “what we’ve benefitted from is the shape of these cows which gives us a head start when it comes to producing top quality suckled calves.” After calving in individual pens the cows and calves are moved to cubicle accommodation at the family’s other farm. The diet is switched to 100% grass silage and the calves have access to a creep area, although no additional feed is offered to calves at this stage. Ideally cows and calves are turned out by mid-May after all the calves are de-horned and the bull calves have been castrated. Creep feeders are introduced from early August offering a grower pellet. “We want as many calves away as we can in the November sale. “About a month beforehand we gather the cows and calves and decide what heifer calves we’ll retain for breeding and what steer calves will be sold.” “We keep these calves inside, still on their dams, until the morning of the sale. We’ve tried weaning them sooner but the calves do better left on the cows until sale day. The heifer calves being retained are sent back to the allotments with their mothers but all the newly weaned cows are kept inside.” The better steer calves weigh around 300-350kg. The later-born calves are over-wintered and sold as strong stores the following May. Andrew’s main criteria for bull selection are conformation, mobility and pedigree – but he knows the sort of pedigree that will produce the “shapey” calves the Browns are well known for.

a Broadmeadows Cannon sired cow. “He’s done a great job for us and he’s still working at 14 years old,” says Andrew. “Growth, stretch and the ability of spring born calves to develop shape and conformation is what we need to make a mark in the autumn suckled calf sales.” Just under 70 suckled calves at around seven to eight months old went under the hammer from Asby Hall last autumn and realised an average of almost £1000 apiece. And that’s no flash in the pan; the year before a similar number levelled at £1045 Last autumn’s top price was £1650 paid for a steer by the Gallaber sire and this spring saw a 10-month heifer calf make £1750. The issue of the finished beef market now demanding cattle at lighter weights is having an impact on every stage of the production cycle but Andrew and Mark Brown believe the qualities of the Limousin are unequalled in producing cattle to suit tightening specifications. “There’s certainly no need for us to change anything we’re doing because the type of cattle the Limousin is producing for us is providing the ideal size and shape for finishers to work with – especially now that cattle need to carry enough finish but to weigh less,” says Andrew. While there’s always stiff competition for the Asby hall calves from those looking for future tickets in the primestock show rings, it’s the regular East coast finishers that take the Brown’s cattle year after year that are responsible for the consistently average high prices they achieve.

he Reed family’s 12-14 month store cattle regularly top the auction sales at their local markets and they believe that the Limousin plays a key role in helping them to achieve this result. West Biggins Farm is a true family hill farm, headed by William Reed, who at age 86 is still an active member of the workforce. He is assisted by his two sons, Michael and John, as well as John’s two sons, Stephen

and Andrew, with the family celebrating their centenary of farm ownership last year. The holding, which is a mixture of owned and rented land, spans a total of 1,400 acres, as well as rights on the adjoining common. The 190 suckler cows at West Biggins graze on land that reaches 1,200 feet above sea-level and the herd is predominantly Limousin, with some British Blue breeding. The cattle are run alongside a flock of

more than 2,500 ewes. All of the cows go to the Limousin bull and the current team includes three Keskadale bulls, all of which were bought privately from KD Harryman’s herd based in Keswick, Cumbria. The eldest is the 2010 Keskadale Fudge, by Hudscales Vince and out of a cow with Snoopy bloodlines. He arrived on the farm as a yearling and has thrown some good calves. The second Keskadale bull is

FEATURE James, born in August 2014 and sired by Haltcliffe Exocet, out of Keskadale Beth. Meanwhile, the other Keskadale bull is Jaffa, a Rhiwllech Carlsberg son whose dam is Keskadale Davina. Born in April 2014, Jaffa has been resident since last May and the family is eagerly awaiting the imminent arrival of his calves. Another team member is Garyvaughan Hidget, bred by Colin and Elaine Lewis, who are based in Welshpool, Powys. The November 2012 bull is by Plumtree Deus and his dam is Garyvaughan Fidget, with the Reeds bidding to 11,000gns to secure Hidget at a British Limousin Society Sale at Borderway Mart, Carlisle in the spring of 2014. Lastly, but equally importantly, comes Haltcliffe IQ, a three-yearold Elgin son out of the Ocean daughter, Haltcliffe Atlantic and produced by noted breeders, Messrs Ridley of Hesket Newmarket in Wigton, Cumbria. IQ went under the hammer for 4,000gns at a Borderway Mart sale in May of last year, initially selling to J Ions and Company from Morpeth, Northumberland. The Reeds bought him straight off the farm through a private arrangement.

One of the reasons why we like Keskadale bloodlines is because they are renowned for giving excellent results when used on commercial herds. It’s also about finding an animal which catches our eye; luckily, we are normally in agreement, when it

comes to buying in new cattle.” “We only have one pedigree cow, however; she came from Ian Nattress’ Greenwell herd at Lanchester in County Durham, which has now been dispersed. We have bred an odd bull and kept it for ourselves, but we feel there is always a temptation to keep a home-bred bull that we would not have otherwise

“There is still a ready market for decent cattle and that is why we strive to produce stores of a high standard.” considered, had it not come from our own herd.” Male calves are castrated and a couple of dozen of the best heifers are retained for breeding each year. “We like to keep heifers with some British Blue breeding, whose mothers have required minimal veterinary attention, produced plenty of milk and performed well as breeders,” comments Michael. “Another priority is temperament and we will reject an animal which shows any sign of unreliability. All of our yearling

heifers are tied up in a byre during their first winter. Some people think this practice is laborious, but it saves time in the long term, by making them much quieter and easier to handle throughout their lifetime.” In some years, cow numbers are made up through the purchase of females either at Kirkby Stephen or Carlisle. “We try to keep enough heifers to supply replacements, but if we run short we will buy in Limousin cross British Blue heifers with calves at foot,” explains Michael. “We much prefer to buy this

class of stock, because you’re never sure what you’re going to get with an in-calf heifer. But it is getting more difficult to find the quality that we’re seeking. Our cows reach an average of about 10 years, although some will go on to produce a healthy calf each year for longer and if that is the case, then we will keep her.” The Reeds take great pride in preparing their cattle for the store ring and all of the stock are washed, dried and have their bellies and heads trimmed, to ensure that they look their best. Their efforts obviously pay off,

because their cattle are usually in the top 5% of prices for their age group; some of the most recent sale figures have exceeded £1,000 per head. The majority of the cows calve in the autumn, so that their progeny is ready in time for the annual October show and sale of Limousin cross suckled calves at Hexham Auction Mart, which is the main outlet. Some four or five animals are generally selected for showing on the day and it is not uncommon for the family to take a red rosette or two home with them. In 2013, they had the overall champion single, repeating the same success the following year. In addition, they took the prize for the best pen of four bullocks in 2014 and for the best pen of four heifers at Hexham in 2015. The 2015 special sale saw 90 head forward from the Reeds average £1,087, with a price of £950 achieved this time. Buyers travel to the sale from all over Scotland and north-east England and some are specifically looking for West Biggins cattle. Another store sale which the family attends on a regular basis is also at Hexham and is known locally as ‘Tow Law Day,’ having been named after the venue where it was previously held, before the auction site’s closure. Cull cows also sell readily and the Reeds find that Darlington Mart offers the best opportunity to achieve favourable prices. The smaller group of springborn calves find a ready market with buyers at Middleton-in Teesdale Auction Mart, where many of the heifers presented go on to join breeding herds.

FEATURE Commercial store cattle showing enthusiasts are often present and some of the Reed’s entries subsequently win awards for their new owners. Over the winter, the cows are housed on straw. This is an expensive option, but the family finds that they fare better on a bedded system and have never been tempted to install cubicles. Most are fed a simple diet of silage and minerals, with calves given a bought-in concentrate, although heifers suckling calves are given a small quantity of pellets, to help them to maintain their condition. While the herd is not enrolled in a formal health scheme, close attention is paid to their welfare and they are routinely vaccinated to protect them against BVD. Calving on the farm is split into two periods to help with cashflow and keep wintering costs down with spring calving cows not having the added expense of wintering a calf. The Autumn calving cows start towards the end of August, mainly calving outside with very few assisted calvings and even fewer caesarians. All cows calving in the spring give birth outside and their calves only

get given access to the creep in August to further try keep costs to a minimum. This split of calving helps with cashflow, the spring born calves provide a steady income from February until May each year. With a large number of livestock to look after in the winter, silage-making is a key task and some 300 acres is cut annually. The main crop is taken at the end of June, with a

second, smaller cut designated as sheep feed. The entire crop is made into big bales for easier handling, because the buildings on the rented land are scattered across a wide area. The first Limousin bull arrived at West Biggins twenty five years ago and it seems highly likely that the breed will continue to serve the cows and heifers for at least as long into the future. “Many of the smaller suckler

This embryo calf is by Powerhouse Elite and is out of Wilodge Dellola, a daughter of the noted Sarkley Bellola. Whiskey Jazee was the result of ten eggs purchased from the noted Shifnal based Wilodge herd. The ten eggs, bought to fast track the genetics in the herd and to bring some current bloodlines, have resulted in six females and three bulls including Jazee. Purchasing the top price bull was Mrs S Gunter and Mr OD Tranter, Illa Farm, Rhaglan, Abergavenny who run the Illa pedigree herd and also a 140 cow commercial herd. Mr Tranter had purchased a bull last year privately from the Whiskey herd and had set his sights on the offering at Brecon.

Earlier in the morning this December 2014 born bull with ‘power, squareness, and natural width’ had been placed as Reserve Supreme Champion in the pre-sale show in front of the judge for the day Adam Watson of the Saunders herd, Saunders Close, Slaggyford, Brampton, Cumbria. Enjoying a good trading day the Whiskey herd sold five bulls in all to gross 22,050gns to average just over 4400gns. On the day three bulls made 8000gns or more with 33 bulls selling to an average of £3728. In front of a big crowd the clearance rate was a solid 70%. Gains is by Haltcliffe Dynamo and out of the noted female, Haltcliffe Ainsi. His son, Haltcliffe Jonsson, was senior champion at Carlisle last October, where he subsequently made 11,500gns. Haltcliffe Gains sold to S & S Hough of Park Grange Farm, Pontefract in West Yorkshire. The summer sale of bulls saw twenty sell to average a solid £3685 with a 67% clearance rate of the thirty bulls forward. Selling at 4,800gns was Tomschoice Lust offered by James & Sarah Cooper of Hill Top Farm, Dacre in North Yorkshire. This February 2015-born bull, sired by Warrenderpark Geronimo and out of Tomschoice Desire, was accompanied by good figures for calving and carries two copies of the F94L gene. His sister is the dam of Tomschoice Ironstone, which is currently at stud in Ireland. Tomschoice Lust was purchased by WJ Marr from Cornhill, Aberdeenshire. ollowing on from the bulls the day also featured the second production sale from the Ampertaine herd of James McKay, Maghera, Co Derry and the third production sale from the Procters herd of Procters Farms. Leading the females at 5,000gns was Ampertaine Jan from within the offering of twelve heifers in all from the noted Ampertaine herd. The July 2014 Ampertaine Jan is sired by Plumtree Fantastic and out of Ampertaine Venice. She is half-sister to the 19,000gns Ampertaine Jeronimo and to the 10,500gns Ampertaine Jupiter. Jan was born in July 2014 and was knocked down to AJ Ewing of Dumbretton Farm, Annan, Dumfriesshire. Two further Ampertaine heifers sold to 4,800gns. The first was the Ampertaine Foreman daughter, Ampertaine Lola, which caught the eye of W Corrie from Drumhilla Farm in Newtownards, County Down. Lola was born in January 2015 to Ampertaine Eloise and is a maternal sister of the noted Ampertaine Valhalla, which has bred numerous show calves. The second Ampertaine heifer at 4,800gns was Ampertaine Janice, by Sympa. She is a November 2014 female from the noted Sharon family which has bred numerous five figure bulls. Janice was snapped up by Hampshire Livestock which is based at Huby near York. At 4,200gns was another Sharon family heifer in the shape of Ampertaine Jade sired by Ampertaine Elgin. Born in July 2014, she is out of Ampertaine Gigi and travelled back to home turf after being purchased by M McKenna, who also comes from Maghera. Two further Ampertaine heifers made

4000gns. The first was natural calf, Ampertaine Jackie, also sired by Ampertaine Elgin and out of Ampertaine Bernice. Bulls sold from this line include Ampertaine Hollywood at 8,500gns and Ampertaine Inspector, which was exported to the Netherlands. Born in August 2014, Jackie was another purchase from the production sale by Hampshire Livestock. Another Ampertaine Elgin daughter in the money at 4,000gns was the November 2014 Ampertaine Joselyn, purchased by Tony Hartnett of Clonbonny, County Westmeath in Ireland. She is out of Kype Sky and is a threequarter sister to Ampertaine Inferno, which sold for 16,000gns. Foxhillfarm Jessica also went for 4,000gns, having been offered for sale by Michael & Melanie Alford, who had made the long journey from Foxhill Farm in Cullompton, Devon. Jessica is by Sympa and out of Corridan Chelsea. The heifer had been pregnancy-diagnosed in-calf by AI to the noted Ampertaine Gigolo and went to join the herd of GW Jones of Graig Fach, Welshpool in Powys, Wales. Welsh buyers were also in evidence when one of the Procters heifers from the noted herd at Slaidburn in Clitheroe made 3,800gns, going to EE Davies & Co of Erw Pistyll,

Aberdovey in Gwynedd. Procters Ivana is an embryo calf got by AI to Haltcliffe DJ. She is out of Ulna, a strong Mas du Clo daughter. The January 2014 born Procters Juliet made 3500gns. Juliet is from the noted Greenwell Leiha foundation family. An embryo calf by Claragh Franco and out of Procters Eleiha, Juliet was sold to JB Holliday & Sons from Town Head Farm, Langwathby, Penrith. EE Davies bought a second Procters heifer for the family herd; this time it was the 3,200gns Procters Jura, a Claragh Franco daughter born in March 2014 to Procters Germain. Jura comes from the Intruse family, which has produced bulls up to 9,000gns. Bred by AD Bishop from Pitfield Farm in Eldersfield, Gloucestershire, Bishops Goldilocks went under the hammer at 3,200gns for Michael and Melanie Alford. The January 2011 Scorboro Custard daughter is out of Haughton Dodger, whose first calf, Foxhillfarm Jenson, went on to make 10,000gns.
