Lincoln Welcomes Carli Putnam to the Team At Blue Tiger Fest on August 24, the Lincoln softball team added one more player to its 2017 roster. This left-hander has impressed head coach Chad Kerr in a number of ways, including her ability to battle through adversity. Earlier this summer, Kerr and the Lincoln softball team began working with Team IMPACT, an organization that strives to improve the quality of life for children who are facing chronic or livethreatening illnesses by matching those kids with collegiate teams. Through that partnership, Kerr learned of Carli The Lincoln softball team made Carli Putnam an honorary Putnam, an eight-year-old girl who, as a baby, had member at Blue Tiger Fest on Aug. 24. a massive brain bleed and was diagnosed with cerebral palsy. Carli underwent an experimental procedure to clear out the excessive fluid in her brain, and the clot ended up healing. Carli, however, still struggles with visual impairment and is non-verbal. She is still very expressive, though, and is excited to become an official member of the Blue Tigers. Carli will be #12 on Lincoln’s roster. “I was just very touched by all this young girl and her family go through on a day to day basis and they never complain at all,” Kerr said. “It makes you really take a step back and look at your own situation and some of the things we complain about and realize what really matters in life. She may have vision and speaking problems, but her emotions and sounds speak for her.” The Blue Tigers are very excited about adding Carli as a teammate, and many have already reached out to her and her mother to share their enthusiasm. “Most of my players are education or special education majors, so they are really excited about Carli joining the team,” Kerr said. “They already know her favorite colors and everything. We are going to include her in everything that we feasibly can, definitely including our home games. I’m sure with this terrific group of ladies, Carli won’t be disappointed with her experience being an LU softball player!” The Lincoln athletic department has a history of working with Team IMPACT, as last year the LU men’s basketball team added Blaze Gilzow, a boy born with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome, to its team. Team IMPACT has worked with over 300 schools in 43 states and has positively impacted the lives of more than 700 children. Chad Kerr will enter his second season as the head of coach of Lincoln’s softball team in 2017. In his first year on the job, Kerr led the Blue Tigers to several notable victories, including a win over a Northwest Missouri team ranked No. 16 in the country. Lincoln also earned its first-ever win over Emporia State and had four players end the season on the All-MIAA team. A tireless recruiter, Kerr brought in 10 newcomers for 2017, creating one of the biggest signing classes in program history. Kerr came to Lincoln after one season at Alderson Broaddus, where he guided the program to its first winning season in three years in 105. Kerr coached five All-Great Midwest Athletic Conference players, including two first team selections, and led the Battlers to a berth in the GMAC tournament.

About the MIAA The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, a 15-member conference (beginning in 2012-13) of NCAA Division II institutions in Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Nebraska, was first organized in 1912 as the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Over the past 100 years, the MIAA has gained the reputation of being one of the top NCAA Division II conferences in the nation. MIAA student-athletes have won 15 NCAA team championships and, since 1964, more than 160 individual national titles. The MIAA currently conducts championships in 10 sports for men and nine for women. For the men, champions are crowned in football, soccer, cross country, basketball, wrestling, indoor and outdoor track & field, baseball, tennis and golf. The women compete for titles in volleyball, cross country, soccer, basketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, softball, golf and tennis.
Dr. Bob Boerigter Commissioner
The MIAA turned a new page on July 1, 1992, when the NCAA Division II conference changed its name from the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association to the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. The decision to make the change originated in 1989, when Pittsburg State University and Washburn University became the first schools outside the state of Missouri to gain membership in the MIAA. The conference was first organized in 1912 with 14 member institutions. Of those original members, the University of Central Missouri, Truman State University, and Northwest Missouri State University still remain a part of the MIAA. The first change in membership came in 1924, when the MIAA reorganized to include only the five regional Missouri state colleges: Central, Truman (at the time known as Northeast Missouri State), Northwest, Southeast Missouri State University and Southwest Missouri State University (now Missouri State). Over the next 56 years, three schools joined the membership: the Missouri School of Mines (later the University of Missouri-Rolla) in 1935, Lincoln University in 1970, and the University of Missouri-St. Louis in 1980. The 1980s brought the biggest changes in the conference. In 1981, Southwest Missouri State University opted to move to NCAA Division I and the MIAA appointed its first full-time commissioner, Ken Jones, in July. He would be in the position for 16 years, retiring in 1997. Former Gulf South and Metro commissioner Ralph McFillen succeeded Jones, serving 10 years before his retirement in 2007. Jim Johnson succeeded McFillen in July of that year and served as commissioner until September of 2010. Dr. Bob Boerigter succeeded Johnson in September 2010. Southwest Baptist University brought membership back to eight schools in 1986, before the major expansion of the conference in 1989. Pittsburg State, Washburn, Missouri Southern State College (now University) and Missouri Western State College (now University), formerly members of the Central States Intercollegiate Conference, began competition in the 1989-90 season. Southeast Missouri State left the MIAA following the 1990-91 season to move on to NCAA Division I, and was replaced by Emporia State University in the 1991-92 season. On July 29, 2010, the MIAA CEO Council voted to extend invitations to the University of Central Oklahoma and Northeastern State University to become members of the league, and on September 24, 2010, it voted to extend invitations to the University of Nebraska-Kearney and Lindenwood University to become conference institutions, beginning in 2012-13.

John Moseley was elevated to the position of Director of Athletics in April of 2016. Moseley had previously spent the 2015-16 season as Lincoln’s Interim Director of Athletics. During that time, Moseley helped lead the Blue Tigers by strengthening partnerships in the Jefferson City community and assisting in the creation of the Blue Tiger Athletics Club, the main fundraising arm of Lincoln athletics. In the fall of 2015, 127 LU student-athletes were named to the Dean’s List, with 19 earning perfect 4.0 grade point averages. Moseley brings 10 years of NCAA Division I experience with him to Lincoln. A 1998 graduate of East Carolina University, Moseley returned to his alma mater in 2008 to serve as the program’s Director of Basketball Operations. In 2009, Moseley was promoted to assistant basketball coach, serving as the recruiting organizers. In both of his years with the Pirates, ECU posted double digit wins.
John Moseley
Prior to coaching at East Carolina, Moseley was an assistant coach at WinstonSalem State University in 2007-08, where helped lead the team to its most Division I victories in program history. Before that, Moseley made a one-year stop at Wright State University, working as an administrative assistant on a Raiders team that won Horizon League regular season and tournament championships.
Interim Athletic Director
Moseley’s teams have enjoyed success at every one of his stops, and he has proven he can win at multiple levels of competition. Moseley was the head basketball coach at Warren County High in Warrenton, N.C. from 2004-06, leading the program to its first state championship in 23 years. Moseley has a bachelor’s degree in science, exercise and sport science and a master’s degree in education and athletic administration, both from from East Carolina University. Moseley and his wife, Crystal, have a daughter, Jillian.

Kemna was no stranger to Lincoln before then, however, as she was a softball player for the Blue Tigers prior to becoming LU’s head softball coach/concession coordinator in 1997.
Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance/ SWA
Kemna has also overseen many improvements to the athletic program, including the institution of live internet streaming of Lincoln sporting events and improving the facilities. Kemna also worked with the Blue Tiger Quarterback Club to add a state-of-the-art weight room. Kemna is a 1996 graduate of Lincoln University, earning a Bachelor of Science in Education. LINCOLN UNIVERSITY 2017 SOFTBALL MEDIA GUIDE
Since 2003, few teams in any sport have achieved the level of success enjoyed by the Lincoln women’s track & field team. The Blue Tigers continued the dynasty in March of 2016, when Lincoln won the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field national title. Winners of 12 total national championships over the past 13 years, including five-straight NCAA Division II outdoor titles from 2003-2007, the Blue Tiger track & field program was honored in 2013 by being inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame. Lincoln has established itself as one of the top track & field programs in all of NCAA Division II, with the men's team also taking third at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships. Both the LU men and women won MIAA championships in indoor track & Field in 2016, and the Blue Tigers have combined to turn in over 700 DII All-American performances since head coach Victor Thomas took over in 2002-03. LINCOLN UNIVERSITY 2017 SOFTBALL MEDIA GUIDE
History of Lincoln University At the close of the Civil War, soldiers and officers of the 62nd United States Colored Infantry, stationed at Fort McIntosh, Texas, but composed primarily of Missourians, took steps to establish an educational institution in Jefferson City, Missouri, which they named Lincoln Institute. The following stipulations were set for the school: 1. The institution shall be designed for the special benefit of the freed African-Americans; 2. It shall be located in the state of Missouri; 3. Its fundamental idea shall be to combine study and labor. Members of the 62nd Colored Infantry contributed $5,000; this was supplemented by approximately $1,400, given by the 65th Colored Infantry. On January 14, 1866, Lincoln Institute was formally established under an organization committee. By June of the same year, it incorporated and the committee became a Board of Trustees. Richard Baxter Foster, a former first lieutenant in the 62nd Infantry, was named first principal of Lincoln Institute. On September 17, 1866, the school opened its doors to the first class in an old frame building in Jefferson City. In 1869, Lincoln Institute moved to the present campus, and in 1870 it began to receive aid from the state of Missouri for teacher training. College-level work was added to the curriculum in 1877, and passage of the Normal School Law permitted Lincoln graduates to teach for life in Missouri without further examination. Lincoln Institute formally became a state institution in 1879 with the deeding of the property to the state. Under the second Morrill Act of 1890, Lincoln became a land grant institution, and the following year industrial and agricultural courses were added to the curriculum. In 1921, the Missouri Legislature passed a bill introduced by Walthall M. Moore, the first black American to serve in that body, which changed the name from Lincoln Institute to Lincoln University and created a Board of Curators to govern the University. The North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools accredited the high school division in 1925, the teacher-training program in 1926, and the four-year college of arts and sciences in 1934. Graduate instruction was begun in the summer session of 1940, with majors in education and history and minors in English, history, and sociology. A School of Journalism was established in February 1942. In 1954, the United States Supreme Court handed down its ruling in Brown v. Board of Education, and Lincoln University responded by opening its doors to all applicably meeting its entrance criteria. Today, Lincoln University serves a diverse clientele, both residential and non-residential, engages in a variety of research projects, and offers numerous public service programs in addition to providing an array of academic programs.
