Chad Kerr will enter his third season as the head of coach of Lincoln’s softball team in 2018. In his first year on the job, Kerr led the Blue Tigers to several notable victories, including a win over a Northwest Missouri team ranked No. 16 in the country. Lincoln also earned its first-ever win over Emporia State and had four players end the season on the All-MIAA team. He repeated the latter feat in 2017, as four more Blue Tigers were selected all-conference at the end of the season. Kerr also picked up another notable win, leading LU to a victory over NCAA Division I opponent Grambling State in the National HBCU Classic in Oklahoma.

2012, Kerr took a Tiger squad that had been shutout in league play the year before and coached the squad to six conference wins. Throughout his three years with the team, Kerr coached multiple all-league and all-academic honorees. Under Kerr’s direction, Central Christian improved its academic performance, posting a team GPA of 3.51 in Fall of 2013. Kerr left the Tigers as the team’s all-time winningest coach. About the MIAA The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, a 15-member conference (beginning in 2012-13) of NCAA Division II institutions in Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Nebraska, was first organized in 1912 as the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Over the past 100 years, the MIAA has gained the reputation of being one of the top NCAA Division II conferences in the nation. MIAA student-athletes have won 15 NCAA team championships and, since 1964, more than 160 individual national titles. The MIAA currently conducts championships in 10 sports for men and nine for women. For the men, champions are crowned in football, soccer, cross country, basketball, wrestling, indoor and outdoor track & field, baseball, tennis and golf. The women compete for titles in volleyball, cross country, soccer, basketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, softball, golf and tennis.

Dr. Bob Boerigter Commissioner

The MIAA turned a new page on July 1, 1992, when the NCAA Division II conference changed its name from the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association to the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. The decision to make the change originated in 1989, when Pittsburg State University and Washburn University became the first schools outside the state of Missouri to gain membership in the MIAA. The conference was first organized in 1912 with 14 member institutions. Of those original members, the University of Central Missouri, Truman State University, and Northwest Missouri State University still remain a part of the MIAA. The first change in membership came in 1924, when the MIAA reorganized to include only the five regional Missouri state colleges: Central, Truman (at the time known as Northeast Missouri State), Northwest, Southeast Missouri State University and Southwest Missouri State University (now Missouri State). Over the next 56 years, three schools joined the membership: the Missouri School of Mines (later the University of Missouri-Rolla) in 1935, Lincoln University in 1970, and the University of Missouri-St. Louis in 1980. The 1980s brought the biggest changes in the conference. In 1981, Southwest Missouri State University opted to move to NCAA Division I and the MIAA appointed its first full-time commissioner, Ken Jones, in July. He would be in the position for 16 years, retiring in 1997. Former Gulf South and Metro commissioner Ralph McFillen succeeded Jones, serving 10 years before his retirement in 2007. Jim Johnson succeeded McFillen in July of that year and served as commissioner until September of 2010. Dr. Bob Boerigter succeeded Johnson in September 2010. Southwest Baptist University brought membership back to eight schools in 1986, before the major expansion of the conference in 1989. Pittsburg State, Washburn, Missouri Southern State College (now University) and Missouri Western State College (now University), formerly members of the Central States Intercollegiate Conference, began competition in the 1989-90 season. Southeast Missouri State left the MIAA following the 1990-91 season to move on to NCAA Division I, and was replaced by Emporia State University in the 1991-92 season. On July 29, 2010, the MIAA CEO Council voted to extend invitations to the University of Central Oklahoma and Northeastern State University to become members of the league, and on September 24, 2010, it voted to extend invitations to the University of Nebraska-Kearney and Lindenwood University to become conference institutions, beginning in 2012-13.

John Moseley was elevated to the position of Director of Athletics in April of 2016. Since being named the Interim Director of Athletics at the start of the 2015-16 season, Moseley has overseen massive renovations to Dwight T. Reed Stadium which included new lights, artificial turf, a brand new track and a video scoreboard. Moseley also assisted in the development of The LINC, LU's new wellness and recreation center, as well as the creation of a new softball field. Moseley has also helped lead the Blue Tigers by strengthening partnerships in the Jefferson City community and assisting in the creation of the Blue Tiger Athletics Club, the main fundraising arm of Lincoln athletics. Following one of the most successful two-year runs in recent memory, Moseley will also enter his fourth season as the head coach of the Lincoln men’s basketball team. In his second year with the program, Moseley led the Blue Tigers to a 16-14 record, marking the first winning season since 2001-02. In 2016-17, Moseley improved upon that mark by leading the Blue Tigers to 17 victories and a second-straight postseason win. Lincoln ultimately dropped an 80-76 decision in the MIAA tournament to Northwest Missouri, the eventual national champion. Under Moseley's guidance, Anthony Virdure was named All-MIAA first team while Jaylon Smith was an all-league third team selection.

John Moseley Athletic Director

Moseley has a bachelor’s degree in science, exercise and sport science as well as a master’s degree in education and athletic administration. Moseley and his wife, Crystal, have a daughter, Jillian.

A long-time Blue Tiger, Betty Kemna begins her third season as Lincoln’s Senior Women’s Administrator in 2017-18. The Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance, Kemna handles all of the NCAA compliance matters for each of LU’s 12 Division II programs and is also the advisor for Lincoln’s Student Athlete Advisory Committee. Kemna spent the previous six years as Lincoln’s athletic director. During that span, Kemna implemented many internal changes within the program, including adding a corporate sponsorship program, beginning a department Hall of Fame and creating several new staff positions to improve the overall gameday experience. Kemna became Lincoln’s athletic director on July 1, 2009, after serving as assistant athletic director for compliance for the previous four years. Kemna was no stranger to Lincoln before then, however, as she was a softball player for the Blue Tigers prior to becoming LU’s head softball coach/concession coordinator in 1997.

Betty Kemna

In 1999, Kemna took on additional duties as the department’s Senior Women’s Administrator, and was named the compliance coordinator in 2003. Kemna completely turned around the compliance department, leading the institution through a five-year probation period that was a result of violations prior to her appointment. In 2005, she was promoted to Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance. During the 2007-2008 academic year she served as Interim Athletic Director while still conducting her duties as Assistant AD for Compliance.

Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance/ SWA

Kemna also oversaw many improvements to the athletic program, including the institution of live internet streaming of Lincoln sporting events and improving the facilities. Kemna also worked with the Blue Tiger Quarterback Club to add a state-of-the-art weight room, giving Lincoln’s athletes two such facilities on campus. A 1996 graduate of Lincoln University, Kemna has a Bachelor of Science in Education. She also earned a master’s in education in athletic administration from William Woods University in 2006.

LINCOLN UNIVERSITY 2018 SOFTBALL MEDIA GUIDE

Since 2003, few teams in any sport have achieved the level of success enjoyed by the Lincoln women’s track & field team. The Blue Tigers continued the dynasty in March of 2016, when Lincoln won the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field national title. Winners of 12 total national championships over the past 13 years, including five-straight NCAA Division II outdoor titles from 2003-2007, the Blue Tiger track & field program was honored in 2013 by being inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame. Lincoln has established itself as one of the top track & field programs in all of NCAA Division II, with the men's team also taking third at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships. Both the LU men and women won MIAA championships in indoor track & Field in 2016, with the men taking the title during the 2017 outdoor season en route to finishing as the national runner-up at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The Lincoln men's golf team has also experienced the feeling of winning a championship recently, as the Blue Tigers have won seven PGA Minority Collegiate National Championship Division II tournaments. An annual golf tournament sponsored by the PGA and open to all HBCU men's golf programs, Lincoln posted wire-to-wire victories at the championship in 2013 and 2014. In 2015, Blake Lammers continued the tradition by becoming the individual champion at the PGA Minority Collegiate Championship. Last year, Lammers also was the individual titleist at the MIAA Championships and became the first Blue Tiger to qualify for the NCAA region since current coach Aaron Murphy accomplished the feat in 2009. Over the past six years, 10 of Lincoln's 12 athletic programs have qualified for some form of postseason competition. In 2011-12, the LU women's basketball team came within eight points of playing in the MIAA tournament championship game. In 2013, Twishana Williams became the only female runner in the MIAA to earn All-American honors. Last season, the LU men's basketball team enjoyed a 12-2 record at home en route to a berth in the MIAA quarterfinals while Sedeekie Edie broke the NCAA Division II championship record in the indoor long jump to claim the national title.

The women's track & field team won its 12th national championship in 2016. 46

Blake Lammers won the PGA Minority Collegiate Championship in 2015 and the MIAA title in 2016.

LINCOLN UNIVERSITY 2018 SOFTBALL MEDIA GUIDE

History of Lincoln University At the close of the Civil War, soldiers and officers of the 62nd United States Colored Infantry, stationed at Fort McIntosh, Texas, but composed primarily of Missourians, took steps to establish an educational institution in Jefferson City, Missouri, which they named Lincoln Institute. The following stipulations were set for the school: 1. The institution shall be designed for the special benefit of the freed African-Americans; 2. It shall be located in the state of Missouri; 3. Its fundamental idea shall be to combine study and labor. Members of the 62nd Colored Infantry contributed $5,000; this was supplemented by approximately $1,400, given by the 65th Colored Infantry. On January 14, 1866, Lincoln Institute was formally established under an organization committee. By June of the same year, it incorporated and the committee became a Board of Trustees. Richard Baxter Foster, a former first lieutenant in the 62nd Infantry, was named first principal of Lincoln Institute. On September 17, 1866, the school opened its doors to the first class in an old frame building in Jefferson City. In 1869, Lincoln Institute moved to the present campus, and in 1870 it began to receive aid from the state of Missouri for teacher training. College-level work was added to the curriculum in 1877, and passage of the Normal School Law permitted Lincoln graduates to teach for life in Missouri without further examination. Lincoln Institute formally became a state institution in 1879 with the deeding of the property to the state. Under the second Morrill Act of 1890, Lincoln became a land grant institution, and the following year industrial and agricultural courses were added to the curriculum. In 1921, the Missouri Legislature passed a bill introduced by Walthall M. Moore, the first black American to serve in that body, which changed the name from Lincoln Institute to Lincoln University and created a Board of Curators to govern the University. The North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools accredited the high school division in 1925, the teacher-training program in 1926, and the four-year college of arts and sciences in 1934. Graduate instruction was begun in the summer session of 1940, with majors in education and history and minors in English, history, and sociology. A School of Journalism was established in February 1942. In 1954, the United States Supreme Court handed down its ruling in Brown v. Board of Education, and Lincoln University responded by opening its doors to all applicably meeting its entrance criteria. Today, Lincoln University serves a diverse clientele, both residential and non-residential, engages in a variety of research projects, and offers numerous public service programs in addition to providing an array of academic programs.
