his year marks one hundred years of business for Farmers and Merchants Bank of Central California – perhaps better known as F&M Bank. While it was founded in Lodi in 1916, F&M Bank has been part of the Stockton community and supporting its citizens for decades with two convenient locations at Lincoln Center and at McGaw and March Lane.
Kent Steinwert, who is the President, CEO and Chairman of the bank, has a long history in the financial industry. Kent knew he wanted to work in a bank since he was twelve years old, when he was inspired by his scout master who was a banker. He studied economics at UC Davis, and then worked at Bank of America for twenty-three years, before arriving at F&M as President and CEO of the bank in 1997. In 2010, he became the Chairman. Under his leadership, F&M’s legacy of providing local businesses and citizens with personalized customer service to meet all banking needs, as well as reinvesting back into the local communities to improve the overall quality of life has continued. F&M Bank leads the way with innovative products with their launch of their new consumer and business free checking products and is the first bank in the county to have ITMs (interactive teller machines). “We have all the technological advantages of the big banks, but have maintained the old fashioned personal service and flexibility people received from banks years ago,” said Kent. “The tradition of neighborhood banking continues at F&M.” For Kent, banking has been a very gratifying career. “The rewarding part of banking is working with local people from all walks of life to help them be successful and achieve their dreams. Supporting our local farmers and business owners has been particularly satisfying.”
Kevin Sanguinetti, Farmers & Merchants Bancorp Board Member; Kent A. Steinwert, Chairman, President & Chief Executive Officer; Gary Long, Farmers & Merchants Bancorp Board Member; Bob Harmon, Senior Vice President, Stockton Market Manager
And besides helping individuals with their specific needs, F&M Bank has also made making a difference in the community one of their priorities. Over the years, they have heavily invested in Stockton, particularly in helping finance redevelopment downtown. As Kent said, “The human service and community redevelopment needs in Stockton are enormous and this bank is committed to making a difference.” And then there’s the charitable work that the employees themselves get involved in. The F&M team is actively involved in a number of community service – continued on next page

FeaturedMERC HANT organizations, including United Way, Stockton Chamber of Commerce, Goodwill, YMCA of San Joaquin, Stockton Police Foundation, Women’s Center, Child Abuse Prevention Council and many more. While F&M Bank has twenty-four branches throughout central California, the Lincoln Center branch is very dear to
them. The Lincoln Center branch has been open since 2002 and is scheduled for an upcoming remodel. “Lincoln Center is a tradition in Stockton,” said Kent. “It’s locally owned and operated, just like our business. It’s a unique and special shopping district that enhances the life of Stockton, and we’re proud to be part of that.” With accolades like BauerFinancial’s Five-Star Superior Bank award for safety and soundness, and the highest possible rating from the federal regulators for reinvesting back into the local communities, it’s no surprise that F&M has had such success and longevity. And as for the future? “As F&M embarks on its next one hundred years,” said Kent, “I’m confident that the work we will do in the future will have an even greater positive impact.” n

here’s no place like home. Last month, Lincoln Center Maintenance Supervisor, Chris Boyle, was on his way to work when he was completely distracted by a sign on Benjamin Holt about a block from the Center reading: “Welcome home Chris United States Navy.” With immediate enthusiasm, he rushed into the Lincoln Center offices proclaiming that we need to give a big welcome home to our neighbor. And that we did! We surprised Chris Guilford with a knock on his door and smiles on our faces, with a gift card for he and his family to enjoy at Lincoln Center. Guilford returned home a few weeks prior from serving with the USS Mobile Bay CG 53. While he couldn’t give us much details on his mission, he did tell us he is a Florida native now residing in Stockton after meeting his now wife (pictured on the far right) while she was on vacation in Florida. A sweet love story, and even sweeter to have him home in our community. n Welcome home, Chris!

ew things have the ability to bring as much joy to our lives and fluttering to our hearts as babies. We love small babies, tall babies, happy babies, crying babies. Regardless of their look or mood, we squeal at the opportunity to pinch chubby cheeks and tickle tiny toes (caution: these actions are looked down upon with strangers’ babies). From the first smile to the first steps, we all (admit it, guys) have the desire to snuggle and squeeze every… single…baby. For first-time mom Shaina Fahey, baby fever was at an all-time high. After tying the knot in 2014, Shaina and her husband were delighted to experience ease in getting pregnant with a baby boy. Though she was filled with excitement and anticipation, the pregnancy for Shaina was difficult from the beginning. “Morning sickness” was better described as “all-day sickness”, and didn’t seem to fade after the typical first-trimester symptoms. Shaina carried small, but with an athletic and thin prepregnancy figure, family and friends didn’t worry about her petite pregnancy weight. Shaina, however, had beginning signs of a mother’s intuition, and felt that her pregnancy was unusual. Even with a mid-November due date, Shaina felt the need to be ready for delivery by October (she even resisted an October baby shower). After discovering that her doctor would be on vacation during her set due date, Shaina scheduled an appointment with the delivering doctor, who suggested booking an ultrasound. Additional tests through a specialist were conducted, leading to a diagnosis of an aging/dying placenta. Shaina was sent home to rest with husband Matt and step-daughter Nora, and had a goal of carrying 3 additional weeks. Just shy of 35 weeks – Shaina realized the baby had not moved all morning, and in a “panicked state”, she immediately went to the hospital. Hours later, after experiencing contractions through the Dodgers/Giants game, Shaina was awakened
LINCOLN CENTER CHRONICLE | OCTOBER 2016
and startled to learn that the baby was in distress, and she would be prepped for an emergency C-section. Though he was nameless for several days, Koen Dutch Aron was born at 3 lbs 7 oz, and was hospitalized in the NICU for 4 weeks. For seven months, Koen, whose name means “brave” in Dutch, wore a heart monitor 24/7, and still requires medicine for a heart condition. While Koen is cognitively excelling, he attends Valley Regional Medical Center for motor development and physical therapy, and is aiming to reach the growth charts in the upcoming months. The family is thrilled with the progress of their “miracle baby”, and is hopeful for strong and thriving years to come. In 2015, 15 million families related to Shaina’s story worldwide. With an understanding of the pain and angst associated with pre-term delivery, she will serve as a local ambassador for March of Dimes, whose mission is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality. Executive Director of Market Development, Nancy Conway, says that Stockton has among the highest cases of pre-mature births, and hopes to decrease this number through research funding and community support programs. March of Dimes aims to support medical professionals as they discover links to premature births, while also educating families on healthy pregnancies. Especially with the Valley’s high premature and birth defect numbers, our community believes in taking a stand by fighting against premature births, and will again join forces on October 6 for the 5th Annual Signature Chef’s Auction. While similar events have an average headcount of 300, our Stockton community floods the event with nearly 600 participants! Your taste buds will thank you after devouring palate-sizzling cuisine and perfectly paired wine served by the Valley’s very best chefs, including our very own Michael Midgley of Midgley’s Public House. And while you may come to satisfy your taste buds, you’ll stay for the goods and experiences offered at the popular silent and live auctions. Mark your calendars and come prepared to live out your “foodie” fantasies while supporting the important work of the March of Dimes. hat started as a small lemonade stand one afternoon in 2007 has turned into an annual tradition that has raised over $140,000 for breast cancer. Yes, you read that right – $140,000! Over the years Kid’s Taking a Stand has become a household name in our community, one that families and supporters look forward to every year.
Sunday, October 16th 10:00 am - 2:00 pm In front of David’s Pizza at Lincoln Center
2015 Outstanding Young Philanthropists Award Kids Talking a Stand was chosen to receive the Outstanding Young Philanthropists Award on November 12, 2015 at the 5th Annual Community Philanthropy Summit. The group was recognized for their inspirational leadership and the example they set to all of true giving spirit.
All this began when Kriste Merin, of Stockton, was diagnosed with breast cancer. Her two sons, Mason and Gavin, and family friend, Sydney Seligman were bored one day and were looking for something fun to do! Rummaging through their pantry and fridge, they found some goodies and decided to have a lemonade stand in their front yard. That day they raised over $100! Wanting to give to something that had significance in their lives, they decided to donate their earnings to those affected by breast cancer. Seeing the gratification that came with raising funds and helping others, Haley and Lexey Seligman and Brooke and Natalie Davis decided to join the fun. Each year the numbers multiply and now over 50 kids are a part of this Lemonade Stand. High school senior, Lexey Seligman states, “I’m really sad that it’s my last year being home for the planning of Kids Taking a Stand but in the years coming I’m going to try my best to make it home for the event. In the future I hope to become a nurse. I think Kids Taking a Stand has affected my career choice in a big way. After seeing what people with cancer go through I really want to help and care for people who are sick. It really inspires me to want to go out and help people especially after seeing Kriste Merin and Melissa Galvin-Dobson fight cancer. After Melissa passed away, it made me want to work harder and try to make more of a difference.” The BEST part? The entire thing is done by the kids. From the planning and the meetings, to the t-shirt designs and treats, to even deciding exactly where the funds go – it is all run by the kids! Thinking they were just going to have a small lemonade stand in their yard one day has turned into something that touches so many, year after year. High school senior Brooke Davis says, “The past 10 years have positively affected my life and it is great to be a part of something so big. It’s exciting to see the younger kids getting involved the past few years, it’s proves to me that this wonderful cause and event will continue on for years to come.” Wanting to go into their 10th year with a bang and kick it up a notch, Kid’s Taking a Stand decided to move their lemonade stand to Lincoln Center. Come out on October 16th from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm. Help support this cause by stopping by to purchase a glass of lemonade, shirt and other goodies or just to make a donation to these remarkable kids and their cause.

Women’sHEALTH
Raising Awareness for a Continuous Fight By: Jackie Kromm, Owner of Theadora Boutique
W
hen formulating my business plan and mission statement for Theadora I knew my goal was to make it bigger than just a women’s retail store. Little did I know that in keeping with that promise, my life would change forever. I thought I was prepared in every sense of the word but I didn’t account for coming face to face with a quiet, fierce and determined strength like nothing I had ever encountered. You would never know she had breast cancer if you saw her at the grocery store, the soccer field, the office or when she walked into Theadora Boutique. The reason is simple and very well understood... breast cancer does not define who she is as a woman. Make no mistake about it do not underestimate the power of a women on a mission. My – Jackie Kromm staff and I have met that woman, and many like her. She is vulnerable and at times confused but never lost when it comes to fighting back. Knowledge is key and informing women on what they need throughout their journey is most important to us.
“
Theadora Boutique is blessed to help women feel somewhat whole again..
”
Theadora Boutique 270 Lincoln Center (209) 474-7407 Monday – Saturday: 10:00 am – 6:00 pm Sunday: 12:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Some might say it’s just a bra until you don’t have any breast left to fill one. By providing post-surgery compression sports bras to breast forms and mastectomy bras, Theadora Boutique is blessed to help women feel somewhat whole again while being an inviting and comforting environment. It’s for this reason that Theadora Boutique along with “Wine Down Wednesday” is holding our 3rd annual Battle of the Bra event on October 12 at Oak Farms Vineyard. It is our way of saying that in light of a struggle, a survivor is not alone in her fight. n

MAMMOGRAMS: The Screening that Could Save Your Life
E
arly detection is the best weapon in the fight against breast cancer. While the exact cause of breast cancer has not been found, we do know that it can often be treated successfully when detected early. Mammograms are the easiest way to detect breast cancer early and get a head start on a potential fight. Getting a mammogram remains the gold standard for breast cancer detection, and the American Cancer Society recommends an annual mammography screening for all healthy women beginning at age 40. Depending on your individual risk factors, your doctor may recommend a screening mammogram before age 40. Mammography is an X-ray examination which uses extremely low doses of radiation to obtain accurate images of the breasts. It is the best way of detecting small cancers even before they can be felt or start causing symptoms. In addition to mammograms, women should examine their breasts on a regular basis—recognizing the normal look and feel of the skin, breast tissue and nipple, and how to identify lumps and other significant changes. Early detection and treatment of breast cancer can be lifesaving. Talk to your doctor about your risk factors for breast cancer and schedule a mammogram by visiting StJosephsCares.org/Mammo or calling (209) 466-5027. n

T
o quote Dickens,”It was the best of times… It was the worst of times.”
In May 2015, I was diagnosed with stage 2-3 breast cancer and so my journey for a cure began. Fortunately, my oncologist in Stockton was able to administer the best chemotherapy available followed by surgery at Stanford Hospital and radiation therapy at St. Joseph’s Medical Center under the auspices of Dr. Ed Greenleaf, a radiation oncologist. Since most of us have known someone going through chemotherapy treatments, we are all somewhat familiar with the most common side effects: hair loss, appetite loss and feeling miserable in general to name a few. Not everyone suffers these effects to the extent I did however. I became very ill. But I want to focus here on the effects the chemotherapy and radiation treatments had on my skin. Chemotherapy erased years from my face and my complexion improved considerably. Unfortunately, that improvement only lasted while I was undergoing treatment. My skin became drier than normal. Radiation therapy, on the other hand, was very easily tolerated by my body. I underwent these treatments five days a week for 28 days. Each treatment lasted 20 minutes at the most with the majority of the time spent adjusting the settings of the machine, etc. Although the radiated site became dry, itchy, flaky and discolored, another big concern was the contracting or shrinkage of the radiated skin now and in the future. I knew I had little control over the future of the radiated area so my main focus at the time was to keep the area as moisturized as possible to hopefully keep the skin from contracting. – continued on next page

Women’sHEALTH
Women’sHEALTH I washed with the gentlest cleanser available. Then I applied Argan oil, Epionce Medical Barrier Cream, Vitamin C and Aquaphor ointment to the affected area. Afterward I placed plastic wrap over the entire site to seal in the moisture. Fortunately, this process worked and for now I have no shrinkage. Of course, I can’t discount the role that genes may have played in determining this success. Nor can I predict if shrinkage will occur in the future. So to be proactive, I still continue applying the above products minus the saran wrap. In light of such a serious disease, caring for my skin seems superficial and shallow. It was, however, the only control I had over a disease that threatened to take my life. n

Brews and Shoes Showdown is another one of Fleet Feet Sports events and a big fan favorite, which is held annually in September in conjunction with Stockton Beer Week. Tony himself finished the Ironman 70.3 in Santa Cruz this September making it the second Ironman race he has completed along with over 50 triathlons. Service for his community doesn’t stop with Lincoln Center; Tony has also participated in many events in the local area – Lodi 5000 5K, St. Joes Half Marathon & 5k and Run Against Hunger, just to name a few. Aside from continued participation in many local events, Tony is on the board of the Emergency Food Bank and has been the MC for the Making Strides event in both Stockton and Modesto. Growing on all that he has accomplished at the Fleet Feet Sports in the Center, Tony was inspired to open a second location in Modesto in December 2015. Go Beyond Pink this October By DeAndrea Sims, MD In this season of heightened breast cancer awareness, keep in mind that when it comes to your breast health, where you choose to receive care matters. St. Joseph’s Breast Center of Excellence has achieved national accreditation in recognition of meeting rigorous standards of high-quality, patient-centered care. The comprehensive services include mammograms, genetic counseling, advanced radiation oncology, as well as reconstructive surgery. When you “Go Pink” this October, commit to doing your regular breast self-exams (BSE), take a moment to schedule a mammogram if you’re due for one, and encourage the women in your life to do the same. To learn more, visit StJosephsCares.org/Breast Center.

October usually marks the start of cold, windy weather. October also marks the start of Stockton’s Leaf Season program. This City of Stockton program runs from October 1 through December 31 of each year. Make the most of this program by placing up to five 30-gallon bags (preferably clear plastic) of leaves next to your green waste cart on your weekly collection day. There is no additional charge and Extra Service Stickers are not required. Please Note: Leaf bags must contain only leaves. If a bag contains leaves mixed with grass trimmings, branches, brush or other non-leaf content, the bag will not be collected without an Extra Service sticker.
