Everything is made from scratch, and I could tell by how flavorful and fresh it was. I’m already looking forward to my next meal at the new Stockton Joe’s. Speaking of food, I’m also eager to dine at Market Tavern, a restaurant and market coming to Lincoln Center this fall. John Cavagnaro 9/21/38 – 6/19/13 Our condolences go out to the Cavagnaro family for the loss of John Cavagnaro, who passed away in June of this year. John was a very loved man and active in our community. He started working at his father’s business, Cavagnaro’s Shoe John & Claudia Cavagnaro Repair, at the young age of 10 years old. Along with his brother Leonard who owns and operates Cavagnaro’s in Lincoln Center, John ran the business for much of his life, until retiring in 2000. He is survived by his son Dan and loving wife Claudia, who worked alongside John for 40 years. John’s favorite pastime was restoring and playing with classic cars. He has participated in the Lincoln Center Classic Car Show since its inception and his cars have been pictured on the cover of the Lincoln Center Chronicle. John’s three cars will be on display at the Car Show on August 16th.

Welcome Back Dan! We would like to welcome Dan Cavagnaro back to Lincoln Center. He has joined the Cavagnaro staff including Ryan Provencio (4 years) and Paul Brink (formerly of Birkenstock). Just before Dan’s father John passed away, Dan came back to work at Cavagnaro’s Shoe Repair on June 11th (which is his mother Claudia’s birthday). Dan worked at the shop as a young boy and into adulthood. He left Stockton to attend WyoTech in Laramie, Wyoming and then returned to his hometown with a degree in upholstery. The skills he learned as a young boy at Cavagnaro’s carried over into his degree and now his present work as a qualified journeyman at Cavagnaro’s. He also works on collectible cars and boats. Stop into Cavagnaro’s to welcome Dan.

xcellence in cooking is a feat in itself. Excellence sustained for over forty years and handed down from father to son is incredible. Jack Ju, owner of New Yen Ching, comes from a long history of restaurant experience. His father, Kin Fo Ju, worked in various restaurants his entire life until opening his own in Pusan, Korea, at the age of 35. Jack and his siblings helped out in the restaurant as soon as they were able. In 1975 Jack’s mother and father decided they wanted to provide a better life for their family. “They decided to move to America,” Jack said. Taking six of their eight children (the two oldest were over-age and had to travel by themselves), Kin Fo Ju and his wife Lyen Chin Ju came to America. Three years later they opened a restaurant of their own here in Stockton—New Yen Ching. Since its opening, New Yen Ching has been a beloved fixture in the community of Stockton and a treasured part of Lincoln Center. Jack’s passion for cooking is evident in both his restaurant and his lifestyle. He loves fishing and hunting, and makes sure to cook what he kills.

“I don’t just go out for

trophies,” he says.

But amazing food isn’t all New Yen Ching is famous for. For years, New Yen Ching did live demonstrations of its hand-pulled noodles. While they do these only for special occasions now, they continue to be widely known for this fascinating art. “Fox called me up to ask if we could do a noodle-pulling demonstration on live TV,” Jack said. “I said, ‘this is a prank call, isn’t it’?” It wasn’t. Jack appeared on live television to demonstrate noodle pulling, the stretching and folding of dough until it forms noodles. “Hand-pulled noodles are different than handmade noodles,” Jack said. “Many restaurants do handmade noodles, but this is not the same.” Just like his parents, Jack recognizes the importance of family. He has four sons, two of whom work as servers in the restaurant with him, and two of whom are still in school but help out when they are needed. “It is nice to have them around to help out,” Jack said. “Owning a restaurant is very hard and busy work.”

He makes sure his sons are free to find their own passions, though. “I make them do something other than the restaurant,” he said. “At school, wherever, but they do something for themselves.” He continues, “I say, ‘you go ahead and do what you want to do, and the restaurant will be here if you come back’.” The Ju family’s rich, family oriented history sets New Yen Ching apart. The recipes being prepared today have been perfected over years of cooking, and more continue to be created and refined, making New Yen Ching an invaluable part of the community and a great example of excellence in cooking. n EJ Trinos, Jack Ju, Danny Ju & Ben Wong

What are digital lenses and do I need them? OPTICIAN LYNDA WINTER ON DIGITAL LENSES:

I

’ve been getting many questions about digital lenses, such as, “What are they?” and “Do I need them?”.

Simply said, “Digital lenses help you see better because they are customized to your eye’s particular measurements. Today there is advanced technology from Essilor, called Visioffice® with Eyecode, which is an all-encompassing measuring system that allows one to obtain every possible parameter required for modern lenses – with extreme accuracy.” The result is the most advanced, physiologically matched lens ever made. Remember the old days when we all watched television through a picture tube? Many years later, technology has evolved to the current High Definition (HD) screens with such extreme clarity, you feel as if you are literally on site. The new digital lens provides a similar comparison. So, if you are interested in crisper, clearer vision, customized to your own eyes’ idiosyncrasies, digital lens may be for you. Visit Great Spectacles and see how the Visioffice® technology can improve your vision. n

eading back to school can be tough for anyone. Students heading to college, though, not only have to adjust to school—they have to adjust to a whole new place. For many, this means packing up their things and moving, often a formidable undertaking. The UPS Store can make the move easier, faster, and much less stressful for college students. “Students moving to college are often stressed,” said Jason Legaspi, owner of the UPS store here in Lincoln Center. “We want to make it easier on them.” The appeal of sending some boxes or bags beforehand, instead of traveling with them, is understandable. And for those worried about shipping, UPS has Declared Value coverage, ensuring that should the item be damaged, the customer will be reimbursed. “We provide more comfort in moving,” Jason said. “Shipping is more convenient than driving or flying.” UPS makes simplifying students’ transitions to college a high priority. “We offer discounts for students, usually around 5%, sometimes up to 10%,” Jason said. They even offer discounted packaging materials, like boxes or tape, making sending packages to students a very popular option.

Customer service is also very important to UPS. Packages can be delivered in as little as 24 hours with Next Day shipping. “We try to make the move as easy as possible,” Jason says. “We take care of the stress.” n

Your Healthy W

Back to School Headquarters

ith school just around the corner, most kids have the excitement of seeing friends and embarking on new adventures on their minds. But what’s on the minds of mom and dad? Keeping them healthy, of course! Parents want to be sure their kids are getting good food, the right nutrients, and plenty of exercise. Artesian Natural Foods helps parents prepare their kids for the day by offering a wide variety of healthy food for breakfast, lunch, and snacks, as well as supplements to help keep kids healthy and focused. A healthier way of life is easy with the help of Artesian’s friendly and extremely knowledgeable staff.

Meredith Yerke of Artesian Natural Foods

Artesian offers a tremendous variety of gluten-free, dairy-free, sugar-free, and raw foods that meet the needs of many. Parents can still make a quick bag lunch and know they are giving their child healthy food. “A healthier standard of living doesn’t have to be difficult,” said Meredith Yerke, manager at Artesian Natural Foods. And kids with dietary restrictions, like gluten, dairy, or sugar can still join in the fun at the lunch table. With kids going back to large classrooms, now is the time to make keeping them healthy and focused a high priority. Keeping kids’ immune systems strong is important; adding a multi-vitamin mineral and a good probiotic to their diets are good first steps to take. Foods high in healthy fats such as flaxseed oil and DHA rich omega 3s keep the brain in great shape, another important task. “We get people with dietary restrictions to those just looking to have a healthier lifestyle,” Meredith said. “We see whole families to athletes.” Artesian isn’t just for people with dietary restrictions,

though. In addition to their large specialty foods section, complete with grass fed meats and organic wine, they offer one of the largest selections in town for nutritional supplements and skincare. They also boast an extremely knowledgeable staff that provides outstanding one-on-one service. Furthermore, customers can take advantage of their complementary “Child’s Play” newsletter filled with information on the benefits of a healthy diet, supplementation, and exercise.

The knowledgeable staff at Artesian Natural Foods

No one should have to give up taste for nutrition. Artesian makes offering healthy food that still tastes good a priority. “Health food now isn’t what it used to be,” Meredith said. “It tastes great and is available in so many different options.”

ur first-ever Father/Son Fun Run was a huge success! Over $1,500 was raised for The United Way of San Joaquin County and $500 for Radical Reality. Attendees experienced an inspiring and exciting morning with a 5k run/walk, drinks and snacks and an interactive presentation from Radical Reality featuring Donnie Moore from the Oakland As! Donnie and Dean shocked the audience with their Feats of Strength, which led into a discussion about making good choices and father/son relationships. Thank you to Donnie and Dean for their amazing presentation! A big thanks to Peter Pijl of Payters Grill and Tony Vice of Fleet Feet Sports for all their hard work! n

his month we photographed Jennifer Pappas of Papapavlo’s Bistro & Bar shopping for back-to-school supplies at Along the Way with her four children. (“Dad”, Andy Pappas, couldn’t get away from the restaurant long enough to be in the photo, too!) Andy and Jennifer’s new addition to the family, Georgiana, is now seven months old. Big sister Elliana (13 ½ years old) will be an 8th grader in the fall at St. Peter Lutheran School in Lodi where she plays basketball and volleyball. She is also starting pitcher on an all-star softball team. Their season has taken the team all the way to the World Series in Florida! Brothers, Andreas (12) and Stephanos (10), also attend St. Peter Lutheran. Like their big sister, they are both very athletic and enjoy a number of sports including football, baseball, golf, volleyball, basketball and karate. When asked if they ever help out at the restaurant, all the kids excitedly said “yes!” Elliana is a trained server assistant and the boys have helped out with tasks such as folding napkins and chopping vegetables. Of course, in exchange for their hard work they get to enjoy the delicious food from Papapavlo’s quite often (lucky them!). They have sophisticated palates for their age! Stephanos loves the Mahi Mahi while Andreas’ favorite dish is the Chicken Marsala. Elliana likes the Pork Plate (and the pita named after her). Thank you to Jennifer and the kids for being star models! Jennifer’s maxi dress and jewelry and Elliana’s jeans, top, jewelry and shoes are from FINA. Georgiana, Stephanos and Andreas are wearing outfits from Sassy Pants Children’s Boutique. The boys’ sandals are from Zuesters. While at Along the Way, Jennifer stocked up on all kinds of goodies for the kids. She found everything they needed for the upcoming school year, from basic supplies like binders, rulers, and notebooks to Evan Moor and Carson Dellosa books. Along the Way has everything teachers need too! They carry Trend, Teacher Creative Resource, Creative Teaching Press, and Scholastic classroom decorum, as well as Educational Insight and Melissa and Doug educational toys. Teachers looking to decorate their classrooms will find learning charts, borders and more. n
