ireworks, hot dogs, lemonade, swimsuits, chocolate brownies, watermelon, blankets, and the family gathered around. These are the things that remind me of the 4th of July. No matter how old you are, staring up at a sky “oohing” and “aahing” over flying, popping colors makes you feel like a kid again. America. The USA. A time to celebrate the “land of the free and home of the brave”!

FeaturedMERC HANT “By becoming an Insider, I save so much on top of the everyday discounts, that I am able to do more projects than I would be able to do otherwise,” he said. Now there are even more ways to save at Lincoln Center’s Aaron Brothers, 6575 Pacific Avenue, where discontinued merchandise is deeply discounted. Some of those items have been pulled from art department shelves, which have been completely reorganized, Jackson said. Updated paint colors have been added in brands that include Gamblin, Golden, Grumbacher and Winsor & Newton. Among other new art supplies are PanPastels, pastels which mix, layer and apply like paints, but are conveniently packaged in pans. Just-added, also, are Liquitex acrylic and watercolor paint markers, available in various sizes and 50 colors, and Montana Gold acrylic spray paint. The mixed media section and paintbrush bar have both been expanded.

Jill and staff of Aaron Brothers

The kids’ department has doubled in size and now includes furniture; books; games; and art, science and other activity sets, just in time for summer vacation, when at-home learning is so important. The newest looks for the home – wall décor, candles, frames and clocks -- can be found in Aaron Brothers’ exclusive Napa Home, Pacifica and French Manor collections.

S

ummer 2014 brings sizzling savings and hot additions to Aaron Brothers. The much-anticipated, semi-annual Penny Sale continues through July 28. During the event, customers can purchase any wall or photo frame, traditional or heavy-duty canvas, paper pad, open stock Prismacolor marker or pencil, photo album or select paint and get another of equal or lesser value for one cent. All wall art is 40 percent off during the sale. Customers also will receive 50 percent off one regular-priced item and custom framing collections if they mention Lincoln Center’s 70 Days of Summer promotion. Exclusive savings are available for Aaron Brothers “Insiders,” who receive additional discounts emailed only to preferred customers.

As always, Aaron Bros. offers budget-friendly framing options that include package deals on four custom framing collections, one of which is always marked down at least 50 percent. The store’s certified, experienced framers offer complimentary design services. With hundreds of moulding and mat choices, design options are nearly endless. “Really, we can do anything,” said Jackson. That includes shortnotice projects. “We can give you a custom look using our large assortment of readymade mats and frames -- same-day or next day,” Jackson said. “That includes expanded sizes in ready-made components that accommodate digital sizes.” n

Aaron Brothers (209) 952-9097 6575 Pacific Ave. www.aaronbrothers.com

“Go to www.aaronbrothers.com and enter your email, and you will be on your way to saving,” general manager Jill Jackson explained. Andre Vanatta, of Plymouth, has used his additional discounts for art supplies and framing.

News fromTHE KI TC HENSIDE

The KitchenSide C Julie Van Noate of Best Wishes

anning season is upon us and new on The KitchenSide is a complete line of canning accessories! We have just received Italian canning jars from Global Amichi that are hermetically sealed and beautiful. They come in a variety of sizes and shapes and can be used for anything you may be canning this summer. Included in the selection of canning necessities are jar lifters, jar wrenches, bubble poppers, funnels, labels and more! I must admit that my canning days and experience is limited to the jarring of pickles. I have vivid memories of “putting up” pickles with my Mimi. She would wash the cucumbers in the washing machine, on gentle cycle of course…. Then instruct me on the proper way to stuff the jar. My Mimi passed away on May 2nd, her 95th Birthday, and along with it probably my pickling days… I have her recipe though… Maybe someday I will gather the cousins and pass along the tradition. n

Adaptive Scullers D Are Central Valley Pioneers

elta Sculling Center’s adaptive single scullers Richard Van Over and Valdez Washington won their first races at the Gold Rush Masters Regatta May 10th. Van Over, a retired police officer with quadriplegia, and Washington, rehabbing from a serious head injury, battled 18 mph winds but rowed strongly past cheering onlookers. This historic event marked the first time adaptive single scullers raced in California’s Central Valley. Sculling, a symmetrical form of rowing in which scullers use two oars, is a low-impact, fullbody sport for fitness, leisure, rehab or competition.

Richard Van Over approaches finish line at Gold Rush Regatta.

Both athletes were also trailblazers at the Golden State Indoor Rowing Championship in Gold River, the first-ever adaptive rowers to compete in a Central Valley competition on land rowing machines (ergometers). Both set personal records in their 1000-meter event. Van Over, a graduate of St. Mary’s High School and Sacramento State, finished in 6 minutes flat, impressive for one who rows “Arms & Shoulders,” the most challenging rowing classification. Washington, a former track star at Franklin High School, lowered his best time by 16 seconds. He could barely walk or get on an “erg” without losing his balance when he arrived at DSC several months ago. Now he rows strongly on land and water, covering 1000 meters at the Gold Rush Regatta in just over 6 minutes.
