ot August nights, cool cars, and giving back to our community all go together at “The Big L.”   Our Classic Car Show is always a hit, and this year promises to be bigger and even more fun for the entire family. The Classic Car Show registration fees go directly to the Lincoln Center Scholarship Fund — something near and dear to my heart. We have awarded over $20,000 to San Joaquin County high school seniors over the last six years.    Plan a night out at Lincoln Center August 17, from 6-9 p.m. You can check out over 220 classic cars while local bands Mondo, Dave And The Box, The Summit Band and Rouge The Band provide live music. Then, back by popular demand, our colorful fireworks display will be the grand finale. Make your dinner reservations early for this fun evening! And, if you have a classic car you want to show off — circa 1976 or older — registration is taking place at State Farm Insurance. See page 7 for more information.   As many students (and teachers) head back to school this month, make your first stop Lincoln Center. You’ll find almost everything needed to start the 2018-19 school year off right: backpacks and jeans at McCaulou’s; school uniforms from Zuesters; shoes at Fleet Feet Sports and Dennis Shea Shoes. There is something for everyone at one of our six clothing boutiques — even moms and dads — so try something new on this school year.   I want to take a moment to thank the Gospel Center Rescue Mission and Wayne Phil Johnson Richardson, CEO, for the distinct honor of being the keynote speaker at their graduation ceremony last month. The GCRM is changing the lives of so many in our community, and we are proud to stand with them as an exclusive Shopping Center partner. If you would like to support GCRM, or find out more information, you can visit their website gcrms.org or call (209) 320-2310.    I am proud that Lincoln Center is much more than a shopping center. It is a place of community — where children grow up and see Santa for the first time; where friends meet for coffee or lunch to catch up on the details of their lives; and where the owners and management believe in giving back to the community that has supported the shopping center for more than 67 years. Our 90 plus merchants pour their hearts and souls into their businesses, and the community as well. As another summer comes to a close, and the weather will soon start changing, Lincoln Center will continue to be the heart of Stockton and continue creating traditions year after year. All my best,

Phil D. Johnson, President

C lassic C ar Show AUGUST 17, 2018 6:00PM - 9:00PM BY CELINE CHANDLER

The Lincoln Center Classic Car Show is Friday, August 17, 2018. The annual car show has become a premier show in the greater Northern California area, boasting over 220 classic cars, 1976 or older that are set to be showcased at Lincoln Center this year. Car enthusiasts will slowly transform Lincoln Center into a retro scene filled with classic cars and good company.   Gary Cox, Debbie Bond, of American Hearing Aids, father Gary Cox started the car show back in the 1960s when he owned and operated Lincoln Automotive and is still a big part of the show today. Cox, his family, and a hard-working group of volunteers coordinate the parking, making sure the classic cars are parked effectively before the show starts, stating “the show would not be possible without them,” —which we can attest is 100% true. The car show has gained popularity and attendance quite remarkably, since its humble beginnings.    Cox reminisces about the first car show, nearly 60 years ago, “It was 1967. I started out with a friend of mine with about 35 cars. We decided to continue, and we put on 13 shows in 13 years.”   Proceeds from the car show entries benefit the Lincoln Center Scholarship Fund, which supports high school seniors in San Joaquin County. This family friendly event is open to all ages and free to the community. The evening will wrap up with

a beautiful firework show sponsored by Visit Stockton. We would like to thank Wes Rhea, CEO of Visit Stockton, and his team, for being committed to supporting and promoting the community through events like these. Wes has attended the Car Show for the last six-seven years with his son and was the 2015 Car Show Honoree. He proudly told us how much he and his son enjoy the great looking cars, the free popcorn and love the walkable, fun community environment. He says, “You see everybody you know there!”

THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSORS:

AT PODESTO DELI & MARKET

BY ARIEL ARMANINO

M

ost Stocktonians know the joy of filling out a white, paper sandwich slip and patiently awaiting that first bite of a Podesto’s sandwich. The satisfying crunch of their locally famous bread, the selection of delicious meats and cheeses, and of course–all the potential fixings you could want, it’s no wonder why the deli at Podesto’s remains a Stockton staple. One of the city’s favorite spots for a quick and tasty lunch, Podesto’s has been serving up some of the Stockton’s most beloved sandwiches since 1982–and that won’t be stopping anytime soon.    The magic of the Podesto’s deli stems from something quite simple—quality ingredients. Podesto’s owner, Bernie Morgenstern, explains that they continually buy only the highest quality meat, so customers can always count on the flavor they love. While other delis can vary their meat selection based on ease or vendor specials, Podesto’s always stays consistent, choosing the best-tasting selection for their customers, regardless of price. The same goes for their large selection of cheeses! They source exotic and local artisan cheeses, featuring choices such as Drunken Goat, Fiscalini, Redhawk, and many more–including seasonal selections. And all of their bread, including that famous Podesto’s dutch crunch? It’s baked fresh in-house, every morning.   The sandwiches at the Podesto’s deli are so good, in fact, that their popularity spans beyond students, work-goers, and the average lunch crowd. Each year, the deli puts together a lunch order of 650 bagged lunches for boaters, that include sandwiches, baked goods, and some of the deliciously unique salads that they also offer. That’s a whole lot of sandwiches!    With all of the amazing choices at the deli, deciding what you want can be daunting.

Cristina Dias If you find yourself stuck on what to order, Bernie suggests his go-to: coppa and teleme on a soft roll, with a scrumptious salad on the side. Yum!   After over 35 years, with generations of people coming to Podesto’s for their midday meal, the deli has become a community favorite for great food, friendly faces, and the best sandwiches in town. Interested in winning Podesto’s sandwiches FREE for a year? Enter the giveaway and you could be chosen!

Learn how SEAL for a Day helps retired c Did you Know that the Global War on terror is the longest running conflict in the History of the American Military?

This ongoing campaign, surpassing 17 years now with no apparent end in sight, is being spearheaded by various elements of the Special Operations Community — but on the tip of this spear? The United States Navy SEALs. In your lifetime, you are ten times more likely to meet an NFL Football player in your life than you are to meet an actual Navy Seal — so few, so elite. Que Stockton resident, and Lincoln Center regular Carlo Franzia. As a U.S. Navy SEAL veteran, Franzia served multiple combat deployments as a member of SEAL Team Seven in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom in areas throughout the Middle East. While his wartime activities and experiences remain classified, there is one thing that is he is quick to share, “As a Navy SEAL, you and your teammates are trained so highly and focused at waging war on the enemy. When the fighting stops, and it’s time to leave your Teammates to come home — transitioning into civilian life with such a highly specialized skill set can be a real challenge.”

IN THEIR

Together with his business partner, and lifetime Stockton resident, Mike Nemee, they founded the SEAL FOR A DAY experience in 2012. The concept is simple: create a transitional social platform to employ Veteran SEAL operators to use their unique skill set to train corporate civilians in the team building elements. Implementing safe, competent and confident firearms training that is the staple of all SEAL training curriculums. “This place is a safe and comfortable space for us (team guys) so that we can experience the comradery that we miss from our SEAL teams. Not only are we surrounded by like-minded people, but we also get to share our knowledge by teaching corporate civilians and celebrities the things that are drilled into us over years and years of training,” said Franzia.

ELEMENT

AMERICA’S

SFAD is an excellent addition to a retired SEALs life because it allows them to continue working in high-intensity situations. Transitioning out of a place of constant camaraderie can be difficult, considering SEALs are few and far between.    At any given time, there are approximately 2,500 active duty SEALs. Out of the thousands who serve in the Navy, approximately 1,000 candidates meet the requirements to participate in Basic Underwater Demolition (BUD/S) Training each year. Only about 25 percent of these recruit’s complete BUD/S to become Navy SEALs. These newly appointed SEALs join the other active duty SEALs, who are dispersed through nine SEAL teams.    While the chances of becoming a Navy SEAL are slim, the number of SEALs who died in combat — nearly one percent — is far smaller than any other military branch. Those who survive are some of the most honorable in the nation. President Trump recently awarded a Medal of Honor to Master Chief Special Warfare Operator Britt Slabinski, a retired member of SEAL Team Six. Slabinski led a reconnaissance team amid direct enemy fire in Afghanistan in 2002. He was recognized for attempting to rescue his wounded teammate on a mountainside.

BRAVEST

SO YOU WANT TO BE A FROGMAN, EH? Before becoming Navy SEALs, candidates go through Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL Training (BUD/S), where they are pushed to the limit physically and mentally. BUD/S consists of five stages: Naval Special Warfare Preparatory School, Basic Orientation, Basic Conditioning, Combat Diving and Land Warfare Training. BUD/S Training gets candidates in the best shape and prepares them for the battlefield. Want to train like a Navy SEAL at home?

Try some of these BUD/S Training drills: #LINCOLNCENTERSHOPS

HARD WORK BEARS FRUIT:

SEALs sacrifice much of their lives during their career, but SFAD gives them a chance to continue serving in different ways after retirement. The SEALs get to continue practicing their skills while building others’ skill sets. “SFAD allows us to educate and get to know a lot of neat people from all different organizations and businesses. We get to offer a taste of what we went through,” said Franzia.    The SFAD experience isn’t just a place to provide jobs for veteran Navy SEALs; it’s also a fundraising and awareness platform for the Naval Special Warfare community. To date, the SFAD platform has helped raise nearly $1 million for Navy SEAL Families and Gold Star programs. Their celebrity guests have welcomed the opportunity to host gold families and active and veteran SEALs for VIP trips to games for field visits, locker room tours and player meet and greets. SFAD also uses social media to honor fallen SEALs and help maintain their legacy. “There’s nothing more rewarding than to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice to ensure our freedom and way of life, and I’m honored and humbled to serve this roster of Hero’s that are part of our SFAD program,” said Nemee.

ATHLETE APPEAL

SFAD is so unique; it’s become a regular stomping ground for many celebrity athletes and professional sports teams. One of SFADs most prominent partnerships is with the San Francisco Giants organization. Several past and present players have experienced SFAD, including Hunter Strickland, Jeremy Affeldt, Matt Duffy and more.   Brian Fuentes, on the cover with Nemee and Franzia, who spent most of his career with the Colorado Rockies, also frequents SFAD. “Doing SFAD has been one of the closest things to pitching in the major leagues I have done since retirement. Getting hands-on instruction in high-intensity situations is something that I will never forget. Seeing the brotherhood that the SEALs have for each other reminds me of my playing days,” said Fuentes.    For former Oakland Athletics pitcher, Dallas Braden, SFAD hits home. The Stockton native compares the feeling of live fire team shooting competitions to the adrenaline rush of a tight ballgame. “SFAD offers you the opportunity to tap into your inner warrior with guidance from our country’s elite warriors,” he said. These players have opened up doors for continued support of Navy SEALs and their families. Through these partnerships, SFAD brings Navy SEAL Foundation Gold Star families to baseball games, where they get to attend batting practice, meet the players, see the clubhouse and receive pregame honors.

know your neighbor

Dave McCaulou implements strategic retail foundations that keep him bustling. What college did you attend? University of California Berkeley

What was your major?

Business, if I went back to school today I would major in business again.

We learned after college you were a salesman in retail, is that how you got started with your department stores?

My formula is pretty simple, convenient, close to home, great service and the right merchandise. See it, touch it, try it on, love it, want it now, carry it out and wear it today or tonight.

Yes. Within a couple of years after my first job, I started the beginning of McCaulou’s Stores. $5,000 cash, a lease on a 1300 sq. ft. space in Concord, CA, an outside loan from a vendor for another $5,000 and I was on my way. McCaulou’s stores range in size today, from 15,000 sq., ft to 45,000 sq. ft.

WORK WORK WORK. So where do you play?

How many stores do you currently have open?

I start most mornings off with a four-mile run.

20 stores are currently in business. Our most recent store opening (#42) now of course is in the wonderful Lincoln Center here in Stockton.

Tell us a little more about you.

are now available at McCaulou’s!

From what you’ve told us, it seems like retail and department stores are all you’ve known. What’s the formula?

The first actual paycheck I ever received was from F.W. Woolworth company, “Woolworth’s” Stores. I was 12 years old. To actually receive a real paycheck once a week was a big deal. When I was growing up, minimum wage was probably 25 cents per hour. More than that, I wanted to spend my Saturdays absorbing the energy of the people. I would sweep the front walk, wash the doors, and check in the shipments. I loved visiting that Woolworth’s store every day after school. On top of all that, it did not take long for me to be the owner of a fancy Schwinn bicycle with white sidewall tires. I had my own bike and loved my job. Woolworth’s pretty much took me through high school. From high school I moved on to U.C. Berkeley.

Lake Tahoe is a favorite of mine. I have a restored Chris-Craft vintage boat — I don’t like boats much, but it’s nice to have.

You’re a man on the move. How do you keep your energy so high?

What trend or fad do you hope makes a come-back?

All of them, an encore of everything would be great!

If your entire life was a “movie”… … I wouldn’t attend.

What is something that fascinates you?

The fact that 90% of people who enter a store have a tendency to go to their right.

Is there anything that someone wouldn’t guess about you? I love colorful socks.

What advice would you give a young entrepreneur who wants to open their own business?

Go work for a successful entrepreneur, pay attention and learn from every detail. And be prepared to work very long hours.

SummerSun BY KATLYN JOHNSON

DULLING YOUR SKIN?

Here's our top three tips to follow year-round for beautiful, radiant and healthy skin The sun. It is the heart of our solar system, provides life on Earth, and has serious effects on the skin. Along with sunburns, the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays can cause cancer and is responsible for more than 90% of the visible signs of aging, such as sun spots and wrinkles. Not only do you need to up your SPF game, but Vitamin C and daily face washing can help undo and protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays.

Use Sunscreen!

• Lowers chance of developing skin cancer by 50%. • Reduces signs of skin aging by 24% by protecting your skin from the harmful free radicals produced by UV rays. • Sandra Garcia from Central Valley Dermatology stresses the importance of using a sunscreen that says “broad-spectrum” with SPF of 30 or greater and at least 7% zinc oxide. • Apply 20 minutes before sun exposure and reapplied every 2 hours or more if you’re sweating or near water, snow or sand. Colorescience, at Central Valley Dermatology, $65-$130

Vitamin C: The super power for healthy skin • Provides sunburn relief. • Promotes collagen production in the skin. Collagen is a strong protein that forms about 75% of the skin. It’s essential for firm, youthful looking skin. • Corrects and protects the skin from wrinkles by speeding up the repair process of collagen damage from UV rays. • Smooths and hydrates the skin. • Topical application: Vitamin C as ascorbic acid. • Oral forms of Vitamin C: Fruits and vegetables.

• Aim for 9 servings a day or up to 2,000mg. For example, 1 cup of yellow bell peppers = 341mg and 1 medium orange = 70 mg.

Wash your Face Morning AND Night: • Cleanse yourself of sebum, a waxy/oily substance that helps protect the skin from the harsh elements of the outside world like UV rays, pollution, bacteria, dirt and dead skin cells. If it’s not washed off properly, it will cause acne, skin discoloration, winkles and dulllooking skin. • Morning is just as important because the skin repairs itself over night, leaving pore clogging dead skin cells that need to be removed.

• Wash with fingertips or a clean washcloth and lukewarm water while using a gentle cleanser (read the bottles instructions carefully). • Washing with water alone will remove only about 65% of the impurities on the skin. • Finish with a rinse of cool water to close the pores. • Follow a daily routine of washing with a gentle cleanser, exfoliate 1-2x per week, toner, Vitamin C serum and sunscreen.

State

Oh, It’s Summer Time. Little League Games, backyard BBQ’s and picnics in the park! Wonderful gatherings, coupled with lots of yummy food, means soda cans and water bottles going into the trash. Keep a trash bag handy so all of those recyclable materials can be gathered. And at the end of the day, drop them off at the recycling center, add to your curbside recycling, or better yet, give to the neighborhood little league team to cash in for their “Championship Game” party!

CHAMPS!

Congrats to the newest 2018 ABCA/Diamond Pacific Division National Coach of the Year, Reed Peters! Stockton’s very own Delta College Mustangs took home the California Community College Athletic Championship on May 28, 2018 — their first state title since 2011. Pitcher Kevin Kyle and Jordan Vujovich were named most valuable players!

It’s easy. Recycle.
