Technology has changed how we connect with our customers. It is no longer a ‘wait and see’ what is promoted in print ads (although we hope you thoroughly read through this issue of the Chronicle and those past and future!), and customers rely on virtual information more than ever before. For both merchant and shopper, social media has created the most significant change in retail. Nationally, 63 percent of retail customers log on to Wi-Fi during their shopping experiences; our customers are no different. Lincoln Center shoppers are often heard inquiring about an outfit posted on Instagram, or a fun giveaway featured on Facebook. Meals are posted on diners’ pages with the hashtags #yum, #sogood and #happyhour. While you’re surfing the complimentary Wi-Fi on the Brickwalk and enjoying your favorite drink from Starbucks, I encourage you to “add” and “follow” our merchants on social media, to stay in the loop with events and store specials. Start trending with @McCaulousStockton, @Zuesters, @FinaFashion, @TheadoraBoutique, @FlairBoutiqueStockton, @FleetFeetStoMo and more! In addition, we just added Snapchat to our list of social media accounts; be sure to follow us at @LincolnCtrShops! Our owners and retailers believe in our Stockton community by investing, sustaining and enriching your experience. Retail shopping is vital to building communities, fueling economies and inspiring innovation. As we continue to pass the test of time and technology, we look forward to a fantastic fall. In this edition of the Chronicle, read about fall fashion trends at our boutiques (page 18), football kick-off specials at our restaurants (page 14) and new stores and expansions in the Center (page 6). And on a daily basis, follow us on Facebook and Instagram for the latest happenings at the Center!

Meet Us AtTHE C ENTER Last month wrapped up the 2016 Lincoln Center LIVE! season, and wow what a summer! We would like to extend a big thank you to our sponsors: Mercedes-Benz of Stockton, Big Valley Ford Lincoln and Mataga of Stockton. It’s because of these local businesses that we are able to offer the community these wonderful events! The June Wine Stroll was incredible, with more than 20 local participating wineries and breweries, the event raised much-needed funds for Haven of Peace thanks to Junior League of San Joaquin County. The July USA LIVE! was a fun and much needed event for our community, showing our appreciation and support for local first responders and military. Attendees enjoyed watching The Summit Band on the main stage and Calli Grace on the Brickwalk. Kids enjoyed the Sheriff Bus, Fire Truck and free rides on the Jumbo Slide, face painting, games and jumping in the party hopper. The Classic Car Show in August took attendees back in time with classic cars, a new food court and live music on both sides of the Center. The event featured 250 classic cars and raised money for student scholarships. Thank you to the community for coming out to celebrate summer with us!

Labor Day

Celebration

chool is officially back in session, and summer is coming to a close. Barbecue’s and vacations start winding down, taking a turn in the season — approaching the holidays faster than most would like. Labor Day always has a funny way of sneaking up on us, but also sets the tone for what’s to come toward year’s end. Although, there’s more that meets the (relaxation) eye with this holiday. Originating in New York City in 1882, the first U.S. Labor Day celebrations took place as local labor unions put their industries on display with flamboyant festivals and parades showcasing their various talents by giving speeches on labor-related topics. It wasn’t until 1894, that Labor Day became an official federal holiday. In addition to labor celebrations, Labor Day was also created to provide a public holiday in the long “lull” between the 4th of July and Thanksgiving — a much appreciated end-of-summer break for U.S. workers. While there are still Labor Day celebrations that occur today, we all know the oh-so-familiar feeling of it being the kickoff to football season (read more on page 14), shopping sales (save the date for the October Sidewalk Sale 10/1), and traveling. We hope you enjoy your first weekend of September by relaxing and enjoying your most favorite company! Lincoln Center and its stores will be closed Monday, September 5, in celebration of this day. n

THE BrightSIDE

bright side F

or some, Lincoln Center feels like a second home. In fact, as a Center, that’s what we’re constantly striving to be — your dinner table, your laundry cleaner, your hair salon, etc. For me, in it’s current state, the Center is my second home, more specifically for my professional career. As I approach my one-year anniversary as Marketing Director for Lincoln Center and SASS! Public Relations, I reflect on my immersion into this community, filled with incredible merchants, loyal customers, the Sims-Grupe Management team, and of course, all the SASS! ladies and gents in our office. This position has meant so much more. For the first 5 years of my life, I watched my Papa Ray serve this Lincoln Center community just as I am now. As the owner of Village Barber Shop from 1991 to 1993, he was a ray of light in so many lives. A comedian at heart with striking blue eyes,

Ray giving the finishing touches to a fresh cut to son Kevin Rushing

Ramon Rushing would capture the attention of anyone who was fortunate to cross his path. From his incredible laugh to his genuine love of people, he had a passion for Village barber shop and the role it played in his life. I’d light up with glee when he’d head home for lunch; we’d often have his favorite turkey on pita with mozzarella with a side of pickles, and then sit together snacking on our special treat: banana chips. Back to the barber shop he’d go, while I’d wait patiently for him to return. During my time at Lincoln Center, I’ve heard similar stories from others. Our Head of Security, Cecil Rockett, shared with me how he would get here early in the morning just to sit in the barber shop with my grandfather. Similarly to our relationship, they’d laugh, talk, and laugh some more. If I’m able to impact this community with half as much passion and pizzazz that Papa Ray did for so many years, I’ll be honored and feel successful of my time here. I’m thankful to be in this role, and hope to add to the experiences each of you share with your families in this n special place we call Lincoln Center. – Tara Rushing

FOR

risp fall evenings. Bright stadium lights. The infectious roar of a spirited crowd. Add all of that together and you get one of America’s favorite times of year: football season. It’s safe to say that we love football in Stockton, especially when it comes to our local high school teams. Whether we’re supporting them from the bleachers on Friday nights, or cheering on our local athletes over the TV when they ascend to college and professional levels, so many of us dedicate our time and energy to this uniquely American fall pastime.

LOVE OF THE

GAME

The history of modern American football can be traced back to the 1800s. Though the rules, uniforms, and regulations have changed over the years, the sport has only grown in popularity, and has become a fixture of our country’s culture. Many people may not even realize that one of Stockton’s high schools, Stagg High School, is named after a pioneering football coach who helped shape the sport into what it is today. Amos Alonzo Stagg had a career that took him around the country, including Stockton, where he coached at College of the Pacific (what is now known as University of the Pacific) from 1933 – 1946 and Stockton College (later renamed San Joaquin Delta College) until he retired at age 96. Stagg, along with all the other local high schools, will start their football seasons in late August and early September, and it’s sure to be another thrilling season. You might be surprised to – continued on next page

LINCOLN CENTER CHRONICLE | SEPTEMBER 2016

SpecialFEATURE learn that Lincoln Center’s own David’s Pizza is connected to high school football. Owner Adam Pijl not only played football at St. Mary’s High School, but he has also been a football coach there for twenty-two years, and is currently the wide receiver coach for their varsity football team. But no matter what team you’re rooting for, the local home games are the best place to see some great local athletic talent this fall. Our football teams frequently break records, and have regularly made it to playoffs in past years. Each team is made up of outstanding athletes and dedicated coaches, all of whom practice tirelessly and play wholeheartedly each week for the same reason: love of the game. Stockton has a number of ties to professional football, too. For starters, Stockton’s own Alex Spanos purchased the San Diego Chargers in 1984, and the team is still owned and operated by his family today. And of course, several Stocktonians can be found on the field, as well. Edison High School’s Trumaine Johnson has been a cornerback with the Los Angeles Rams (formerly St. Louis Rams) since 2012. Brandin Cooks, a Lincoln High School graduate, has been a wide receiver for the New Orleans Saints since 2014. Tokay High School graduate Julius Thomas played for the Denver Broncos from 2011 – 2014, and is now a tight end for the Jacksonville Jaguars. And from St. Mary’s High School, we have not only a football player, but a referee, too. Doug Martin has been a running back for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers since 2012, while Pete Morelli, a St. Mary’s graduate as well as the school’s former principal and current president, has been officiating for the NFL since 1997. The St. Mary’s alums recently crossed paths again when the Buccaneers played the Carolina Panthers in 2014, sharing a hug before the game and reminding everyone that football isn’t just about the competition. It’s also about bringing people together. And if you’d like to come together with likeminded football fans this season, then be sure to head to Lincoln Center to catch the NFL games. David’s Pizza in Lincoln Center, Squeeze Burger, Midgley’s Public House are all offering the NFL Sunday ticket, and will be showing every NFL game throughout the season, which runs from September to February. You can sit back, enjoy fantastic food and drinks, and relax- as much as you can possibly relax while watching a game of one of the most n exciting and enduring sports around.

n the cover, owners from salons across the Center are enjoying a meal at DOMO. Since opening in June of 2010, DOMO has been offering something for guests of all ages, from quality entertainment to delicious food. Owners Mike and April Nguyen have previously owned other Japanese restaurants but pride themselves on the floor plan and décor of DOMO, all picked themselves from floor to ceiling and everything in between. Watch as skilled teppanyaki chefs cook in front of you on hibachi grills, sushi chefs work diligently on fresh sashimi as you sit at the sushi bar and be wowed as you try a saki-tini or one of DOMO’s other exquisite cocktails. As Mike puts it, DOMO is the ultimate restaurant in the ultimate location and will leave you wanting more. Kenneth Michael Salon is one of Lincoln Center’s hidden gems. The salon, owned by Kenneth Michael himself, has been open in Lincoln Center for more than 10 years. What started as a second

salon home for Kenneth has now turned in to a more permanent one since selling his Bay Area salon. Kenneth is happy to be back in Lincoln Center full time. The salon has many talented stylists – offering services such as the latest color techniques, cuts, styles and more! While you are there, get your nails and toes done from their in-house nail technician. Pictured: Owner, Kenneth Michael There is a buzz in Lincoln Center and it’s coming from The Atrium. The B Hive Hair Salon stylists are some of the most talented in the valley. From services such as extensions, color corrections, full body waxing, eyelash extensions and keratin complex treatments, they will have you looking great and ready for anything thrown your way. Owner, Brady Davis is confident that the professionalism of the stylists, upscale feel of the décor and friendly staff are the reason customers have been coming back for years. On theC OVER With the best of both worlds, VIP Salon and Homer’s Barber Shop has been a fan favorite and one people just can’t stay away from. Located in Lincoln Center South, this family owned shop has been a success story in the making. VIP Salon was a dream come true for owner Cha Williams, one that got even sweeter when son, Wes, moved his barber shop to the salon in March of 2016. Since then the dream team has been offering top notch hair styling and classic barbering with a modern twist. With high-end service and a welcoming atmosphere, this salon and barber shop is one for the books. Pictured: Owner, Wes Williams If only the wall could talk at Village Barber Shop! Bobby Page, owner of Village Barber, began by hanging two pictures and slowly customers brought him photos of their family members and friends who have served in the military. Prostate Cancer – Know Your Risk & When to Get Screened By Paul Lee, MD September is Prostate Cancer Awareness month and a perfect time to talk to your doctor about your prostate health. Prostate cancer remains the most common cancer in men in the US - with one out of six men being diagnosed with prostate cancer in his life time. Although the exact cause of prostate cancer remains to be found, there are several risk factors that have been identified, including having a male relative with prostate cancer, being African American, being obese, having diabetes, and eating a diet rich in animal protein. Finding prostate cancer in its earliest stages allows the highest chance for successful treatment. Over the last two decades a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screening test has helped to detect more incidences of prostate cancer in its early stages, often before signs and symptoms appear. Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death for men in the United States. If you are aged 40-55 with increased risk factors for developing prostate cancer, talk to your doctor about getting screened. If you are aged 55 - 70, discuss the benefits and risks of the PSA screening test with your doctor.

Dr. Paul Lee is a board certified urologist with Dignity Health Medical Group Stockton, a network of health professionals providing high quality and compassionate care. For more information or to learn more about Dr. Lee, visit DHMF.org/Stockton or call 209.946.6800.

n Tuesday, August 9th, Lincoln Center and Junior League of San Joaquin County proudly presented a check for $3,500.00 to Haven of Peace, a women and children’s shelter here in Stockton. Proceeds were raised at the Lincoln Center LIVE! Wine Stroll, June 17th, where more than 20 local participating wineries and breweries showcased their wines and beer, while attendee’s sipped, shopped and strolled throughout the Center. This is the first year we partnered with Junior League of San Joaquin County, benefiting Haven of Peace and we were beyond happy with the turnout. We had a 50% increase in attendees over last year, and while the weather was close to perfection, our heart of hearts tells us it was based on the amazing following both these organizations have. Save the date for the 2017 Wine Stroll, June 16th! We are honored to help such a wonderful cause, and are proud to be a part of this community that continues gives so much.
