its “holiday best”, the merchants are busy helping customers select the perfect gifts, and there is promise of excitement to come! Read about all the new activity, from Market Tavern’s opening to new tenants coming in early 2014 (page 6). As the weather gets cooler, the need in our community for donations of warm clothing and food gets greater. Please dig through your closets and pull out any coats you no longer use. Donate new or gently used coats and new socks at eleven locations in Lincoln Center (page 13). On December 7th and 14th, you can donate non-perishable foods for the Emergency Food Bank at Podesto’s and Trader Joe’s. If all of us will reach into our closets and our pantries (or purchase a new coat and socks or a few extra groceries), we can certainly make a difference in the lives of local families. What a huge impact we can make with just a little effort! Each December I am reminded that it truly is better to give than to receive. Merry Christmas! Now Open The two sides of Market Tavern – a full-service restaurant/bar and food market – sprang from the single premise of offering the best prepared and fresh foods, locally sourced whenever possible. The just-opened restaurant’s soft-lit interior, open-style kitchen and mirror-lined bar make for an ambiance that is both classic and cozy. The food follows suit. Its woodburning oven bakes up traditional style Neapolitan pizzas, while the wood-fueled grill and rotisserie cook a variety of organic and naturally raised meats. Starters, soups, salads, sides and sweets round out the menu, which also features signature cocktails, wine and beer. The market offers shoppers fresh meats; an alphabet of fresh produce – ranging from artichokes to zucchini; and local cheeses, olives oils and wines. House-baked bread and cookies, restaurant-prepared entrees and ready-made sandwiches make it easy to put together a lunch on-the-go or a gourmet take-out dinner. Whether it’s dine-in or take-home, Tavern Market has what you need!

The barware, dishware (Leila’s favorite is Casafina - dishes that do not chip), elegant table linens and centerpieces are perfect gift choices.

DISHWARE “We are grateful to our loyal and faithful customers, and also welcome new customers and friends. Our doors are open and we welcome you to step inside to enjoy the ambiance and treasures in Lino Bella”, says Weldon Cheung, Store Manager. And might we also add, the custom gift-wrap is as beautiful as the gift itself.

The fragrant aroma from the wide selection of candles and soaps makes you think that maybe men don’t have a presence in this store. Ah, quite the contrary. Select from an array of gentleman’s flasks, multi-tool knives and bicycle repair kits - all cleverly packaged. If you’re compelled to buy, yet again, a tie for your man, consider the toiletries case made from recycled ties. Practical and unique.

FOR GUYS

Beautifully bound books are always a welcomed gift. Lino Bella carries a wide selection of clever children’s stories, cooking, etiquette and coffee table books. A gift that will be treasured.

Some problems are too big to face alone. Women’s Center-Youth & Family Services is here to help. Clients talking at the Women’s Center-YFS main office.

Mission Statement

To build a stronger community by fostering the strengths in individuals and by acting as a catalyst to end violence and youth homelessness.

W

omen’s Center-Youth & Family Services’ posters say “Some problems are too big to face alone. We’re here to help.” People come to the organization at their most desperate hour, when they have nowhere else to turn: women and children escaping violence, youth who have been neglected and forgotten, rape victims shaken from trauma, and families torn apart by molest or incest. At Women’s Center-YFS, they find a safe haven, supportive services, understanding, resources, and hope for the future. The agency’s counselors, advocates, therapists, volunteers and outreach workers help empower clients, and give them the support and tools they need to rebuild their lives. Women’s Center-YFS has more than 37 years experience, and a staff of 75 employees at 11 sites to serve homeless runaway youth and victims of domestic violence and sexual assault throughout San Joaquin County.

Women’s Center-YFS offers 24-hour shelters for battered women and their children; 24-hour shelters for homeless youth; a Youth Drop-In Center; 24-Hour crisis lines; 24-hour hospital response; individual peer counseling; individual and family therapy; support groups for battered women, survivors of sexual assault, and adults molested as children; parenting classes; accompaniment to law enforcement agencies, court proceedings, hospitals, and social service providers; temporary restraining order assistance; Case Management; services to help families with reunification; legal and justice system information; and information and referrals to other agencies. Women’s Center-YFS serves more than 21,000 individuals annually, including more than 700 women, children and youth who stay in the agency’s shelters each year. The organization serves those in need, while working to reduce – and one day eliminate – domestic violence, sexual assault and youth homelessness in our community. Staying Stress Free for the Holidays T

he holidays are upon us! There are so many things to do and everyone seems to be going in different directions. We’re consumed with shopping, parties and office get-togethers. It’s hard to keep it all in balance. And when balance in life gets out of control, it usually affects our wellbeing. To maintain balance throughout this season, keep in mind diet, exercise and self-care. Planning ahead will make this holiday season much easier! Meredith Yerke of Artesian Natural Foods

How to control the appetite: (A few tips to help while you’re out at those many holiday parties!) • A couple hours before your event or party have a balanced snack with fiber, fat and protein to keep from over eating at the dinner table. • As the hors d’oeuvres are passed, keep in mind that filling up on higher glycemic foods encourages more eating! Give yourself a limit. • Eat vegetables and protein first. • Digestive enzymes can be taken to help alleviate the stress of over indulging as well as consuming foods you aren’t normally used to eating or have sensitivities to. There are also aids for damage control if you falter (Nux Vomica, Ginger and Bitters) available at Artesian Natural Foods.

HealthyC ORNER Have a plan. Make mindful food choices. Be armed with nutritional supplements. Try to get in twenty minutes of exercise a day…and be sure to pamper yourself!

Exercise: Exercise releases endorphins, the body’s “natural feel good” chemical and decreases the stress hormone cortisol. It takes planning to work it into your day, yet even a simple walk on your lunch can do the trick. If you just love being around people, consider an exercise program at Lincoln Center such as Fleet Feet’s Tuesday night run/walk at 5:30 pm. It’s a great way to get out and enjoy the company of a group of people with absolutely no pressure. Ben Mackie Fitness also offers great programs to keep you moving and feeling great! Consider starting the healthy habit of exercise to lower stress and stay fit though the holiday and into 2014.

Enjoy a hot bath with some of the soothing bath salts from Artesian Natural Foods or aromatherapy candles from Lino Bella. It’s amazing how a little bit of time to yourself can relieve stress! Consider taking a day off to enjoy a massage with Vivian at Therapeutic Massage Center or Kym at Kym With a Y Spa and Waxing Studio. Have a plan. Make mindful food choices. News fromTHE KI TC HENSIDE

A

lthough every Christmas holds some sort of unforgettable moment or memory, this Christmas will be special at our house. My husband Reid and I were preparing for our first Christmas without our kids—an agonizing thought for me, but as they pursue their careers probably not the last time.

Julie Van Noate of Best Wishes

The challenge for me would be how to continue the traditions we as a family had created over their lifetimes. They love those traditions, and so do I. Each year we painstakingly set up two whole DEPARTMENT 56 villages. We decorate the tree with hundreds of glass Santas and the pickle ornament. (You know the pickle ornament, right? An old German tradition… you hide it on the tree amongst the other ornaments and the person to find it receives a gift.) Once all that is done and my collection of Santas graces every spare corner and the lights outside are turned on, it’s time to plan the menus—and that’s easy because tradition dictates the menu. I have two of our favorites to share. Kathy’s “Dragon Soup” will be on the stove (usually hot and ready for when the kids arrive home from the airport). I always start that soup early in the day in my trusty 20-year-old 5.5 qt. blue Le Creuset Oven. While that’s cooking I’ll start “Sausage Surprise”(our Christmas morning tradition) in my brand new red 5.25 qt. Le Creuset Roaster. I’m so excited to break in the newest addition to one of my favorite collections. And I’m in trouble because Le Creuset has introduced several new items that may find their way under my tree! Several are at promotional prices like the 3.5 qt. Round Oven for only $150 (reg. $230) or the 8 qt. Stockpot only $60 (reg. $90). Start a new tradition! We can help you with that. I love tradition! And oh, I forgot to mention… The kids are coming home after all! Time to start cooking!

n

Sausage Surprise (Christmas Morning Casserole) 12 slices white bread, crusts removed 2 cups thinly sliced yellow onion 1 ½ pounds mild Italian sausage 5 eggs 3 tsp. Dijon mustard 1 tsp. dry mustard

½ pound fresh mushroom, sliced 1 stick butter 1 pound grated Cheddar cheese 2 ½ cups milk 1 tsp. nutmeg

Sauté mushrooms and onions in the butter over medium heat until soft for about 5 -10 minutes. Cook the sausage and cut into bite sized pieces. Butter your Le Creuset roasting pan and layer ½ the bread, mushroom mixture, sausage and cheese. Repeat ending with the cheese. Mix all the other remaining ingredients and pour over the casserole. Cover and refrigerate overnight

Kathy’s Dragon Soup Brown sliced rounds of Turkey Polish Kielbasa Sausage in 5.5 qt Le Creuset oven. Remove and add ½ cube butter. Sauté 1 chopped red onion and 2 minced cloves of garlic, then add 1 package of sliced mushrooms. Continue to brown for a minute and add: 2 cans black beans (rinsed well) 1 can beef broth (I sometimes add another for a brothier soup) 1- 8 oz. can tomato sauce 1- 8 oz. can El Pato salsa de chili fresco Let simmer 30 minutes (or longer if you like a thicker soup)

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Bake uncovered for 1 hour until bubbly. Serve immediately.

Podesto’s

It’s a Diestel Bird! Sunny Valley Old Fashion Bone-In Half Hams 99 Diestal Turkeys $ Locally Smoked Since 1949, the Diestel Family has been growing turkeys on their family farm in Sonora. Today the tradition continues to offer you premium broad-breasted turkeys that your guests will remember. Tender and juicy with that old-fashioned flavor, Diestel Turkeys are delivered directly to you from the family farm. Diestel Turkeys are fed an all-natural diet of the finest grains—corn and soy, given extra time to grow, and the special care they need to be the best tasting turkey.
