I don’t know about you, but that date used to seem so far into the future — it was the year used in science fiction movies or television shows like “The Jetsons” — where flying cars and outer space living were the norm. Things have changed since I was a boy — still not flying around in a car — but technology has changed the way we live, how we do business, and how we shop. But some things haven’t changed: customer service, quality and value. Lincoln Center continues its commitment of providing a special place for our customers to be entertained, meet with clients and friends, and provide a safe friendly place to shop and dine. I want to thank our amazing community for their support of our local merchants and restaurants last year, and over the last six decades. We could not do it without our loyal customers who make Lincoln Center “their Center.” Each and every year we look at opportunities to grow, expand our customer base, and stay relevant to changing retail trends and the wants of our patrons. We launch the 2018 Chronicle featuring Gary Long of Gary J. Long Jewelers on the cover. Thank you to Gary for 34 years of serving the San Joaquin County and providing our community a beautiful, firstclass store in Lincoln Center. This is a great month to visit Gary for that special person in your life, so make sure to stop in and say hello! A warm welcome is extended to our newest tenants: Cornerstone Real Estate and Limitless Escape Games. Cornerstone is opening this month, and will be located near Silveria’s (next door to Kenneth Michael Salon). Randy Thomas and his staff have been serving the real estate needs of our community for 28 years. Limitless Escape Games opened at the end of 2017, and if you haven’t been there yet —it would make a perfect date night in February. Check it out after dining at one of our 20 restaurants and see if you can escape — you can book online! Get to “Know Your Neighbor” this month features the owner of Theodora Boutique, Jackie Kromm. Her empowering story will brighten your day and inspire both young and old to follow their dreams. Jackie’s quality service and merchandise selection are why there is no replacement for walking into a “brick and mortar” store. With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, it’s not too late to book on “Open Table” or give your favorite restaurant a call for lunch or dinner reservations. And don‘t forget to enjoy a stroll along the Brickwalk on the 14th with that special someone — local musician, Mondo will be performing live. Lincoln Center is truly your one stop shopping destination this month. Stop into Silveria’s for fresh cut flowers and arrangements; Best Wishes for Hallmark cards and other sentimental offerings; or check out any of our retail establishments to find the perfect gift for that special someone. If jewelry is your choice — get a gemstone “education” on page 16 — then visit Gary J. Long Jewelers, Devon’s Jewelers and Carats.

A Message from the American Heart Association February is American Heart Month, dedicated to raising awareness about heart disease. Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women – taking the lives of more women than all forms of cancer combined. Most women don’t notice the symptoms of heart disease until it’s too late, which is why heart disease has been called the silent killer. But we won’t be silent. The American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women is a social initiative designed to empower women to take charge of their heart health. On February 2, 2018, National Wear Red Day, Lincoln Center is taking part in this nationwide initiative. We’re turning the Big L red and encouraging merchants and customers to wear red. Lincoln Center stands in support of living a healthy lifestyle and spreading the message that heart disease is affecting our mothers, daughters, sisters and friends. For more than a decade, millions of women have united to raise their voices about this silent killer. While we’ve made remarkable progress, nearly 1,100 women are losing their lives to this disease each day. But, with your help, many more lives can be saved. Heart disease is no match for the power of women’s voices. Find out how you can Go Red at GoRedForWomen.org.

JACKIE KROMM | THEADORA BOUTIQUE This month we’re featuring Jackie Kromm of Theadora Boutique. Coming to our town all the way from the East Coast, Jackie has brought more than bra education to her customers, and has influenced the community in many different ways. For her full interview questions, read more at LincolnCenterShops.com Use three words to describe yourself. Loyal, hardworking, real. Where did you grow up? How did you get to Stockton? I grew up in the Bronx and moved to Long Island at the age of 9. I lived in NY until I got married to a wonderful Canadian BC boy almost 30 years ago. Without first reading the fine print on the marriage certificate that stated I would follow him anywhere, I did so lovingly, and our 16th move landed me in a wonderful place called Stockton, California. What is your most cherished memory about your job? My most cherished memory about my job is the great moments I get to experience almost every day because of the dynamic, loving, supportive, sassy, intelligent and soulful women from Stockton and beyond I have the pleasure of meeting and knowing. Do you have a best-selling product in the store right now? My pie graph would tell you that my best-selling item in the store are our tops, but a really close second is our Bra department. We have found our niche and have very loyal customers who appreciate the attention to detail we provide when it comes to fittings.
What is your favorite sport? It should be hockey, seeing as all four of my kids play the sport, as well as my husband who makes his living working in hockey, but I have to say that being a diehard NY Jets fan, though tough at times, will always hold a special place in my heart. Do you have any favorite books? I love to read when I get the chance. My favorites are The Book Thief, as well as The Red Tent. What’s a quote or mantra you live by? The Serenity Prayer. How do you spend your days off? I have gotten into hiking via my kid’s passion for it. Honestly, though tough at times due to my kids loving to torture their mom and dad during a climb, there is no greater feeling then standing at a peak of a mountain you have just conquered, with a beer in hand, surrounded by family. Do you have a favorite brand that you currently carry? Why? I have 2, Veronica M and Joseph Ribkoff. I love having these lines in the store because their pieces look great on a woman of any age, and they also put a trendy touch on a classic design, which in essence makes them timeless. Is there anything new and exciting we can expect from Theadora for 2018? The lines I carry have to stay relevant and current to keep up with the demands of our customers, and we have a few new spring lines that I cannot wait to share with our customers.

a Pet's Friend
Best
BY KELLY O’MOORE
Venetian Pet Hospital has been serving the furry friends of San Joaquin County for almost 20 years, and has been in Lincoln Center for 18. They offer a wide variety of services to all kinds of pets. From cats and dogs, to small animals and exotic pets, Venetian caters to the needs of every pet and pet owner. Services include vaccinations, spaying and neutering, routine medical care and exams, microchipping, grooming, boarding, surgery, and much more. The Hospital works diligently to educate pet owners, in order to cut down on preventable pet ailments. For example, at Venetian, every month is dental health month. This is because proper dental care is vital to a pet’s health. If teeth are left uncared for, the mouth can become a breeding ground for bacteria, which can lead to infection, intestinal issues, and even organ failure. Another key focus at Venetian is community involvement. As a local business, they strive to give back to the pet populace and be a service to and advocate for Stockton’s
animals. They provide services for Petco, Pets Plus and several California based rescue organizations including Pets and Pals, Second Chance Kitty, American Protection League, and others spanning all the way to Oregon. The hospital also has plans to work with special needs organizations in the future, bringing the joy and service of animals to that community. The team at Venetian includes two full-time veterinarians, three technicians, three receptionists, three kennel staff members and one groomer. Dr. Stephen Ayres graduated from UC Davis in 1973 and has been in practice for over 40 years. He is a USDA Board Certified doctor and specializes in exotic pets. Dr. Sam Varon also graduated from UC Davis and is the newest doctor to join the Venetian team. He specializes in short nose breeds, such as Bulldogs, and has special interests in surgery, reproduction, oncology, and end of life care. Dr. Varon shares Venetian’s passion for

community involvement, volunteering for Mercer Clinic for the Homeless, which provides free veterinary care for the animals of the homeless and also for the underprivileged in Central and South America, performing surgeries on both their cats and dogs. When he is not serving the animal community, both locally and abroad, Dr. Varon enjoys spending time being active outdoors with his two rescues: a Goldendoodle named Autumn & a German Shorthaired Pointer named Ziggy. The Hospital also has a new owner, Meka Smith, another UC Davis graduate, who has spent the last 18 years in the veterinary pharmacy industry. She has found it to be a natural transition working in the pet care industry. She’s seen lots of great ideas in the field of veterinary pharmaceuticals and is able to bring that experience to Venetian. The Hospital will continue to be family owned and operated, and is proud to be under Ms. Smith’s ownership, as opposed to that of a larger corporation. The doctors at Venetian are currently accepting new pets; appointments can be made online at venetianpethospital.com. The website also has an online pharmacy where pet owners can order foods and medications, and have them delivered to their homes.

The Center's
Jewel BY KELLY O’MOORE
Featured on our cover this month is Gary J. Long, President of Gary J. Long Jewelers. In his current location since 1989, Gary has been a part of Lincoln Center for 34 years. Gary tells us that this is the only place he would consider having a jewelry store because it is the finest shopping center in the county. “Lincoln Center has been very good to me, and I to them. It has been a great partnership,” says Long. As a very involved community member himself, Gary currently sits on the F&M Board of Directors and, is all about supporting local business and keeping our economy within the San Joaquin community. As president of the Stockton Chamber of Commerce from 2012 to 2013, supporting local businesses was his key focus; he educated the community that 78 cents of every sales tax dollar paid in San Joaquin County goes back into the county’s economy. Not only is Gary an active member of our local community, he also is an esteemed member of his profession. He is a registered jeweler with the American Gem Association and one of only seven recipients of the California Jewelers Association’s Robert B. Westover Award. He is a proud father of three children Andrew and wife Jaclyn, Christine and husband Patrick, and Amanda and husband Paul. Gary also enjoys spending time with his five grandchildren.

Diamond EDUCATION:
You may have heard of the 4 C’s when it comes to selecting diamonds: cut, color, clarity, and carat weight. At Gary J. Long Jewelers, there is a key fifth “C”: Confidence in who you are buying from. Gary finds it highly important that his customers are comfortable and understand what they are buying. From a young fiancé-to-be picking out an engagement ring to an experienced shopper looking for the perfect anniversary gift, Gary and his team are there to help, educate, and instill confidence with each purchase. Gary is an advocate for purchasing jewelry in person, as opposed to online. This is because you are unable to see and touch the piece and experience its light performance. You cannot see how it looks on, nor understand its actual size from your computer screen. He also emphasizes that you do not know who you are buying from. With his credentials and experience, it is no wonder why he feels so strongly about purchasing in person from a jeweler you can trust.
The traditional
4 C’S ARE CUT, COLOR, CLARITY, AND CARAT WEIGHT. CUT: Cut is the only factor that is a result of human skill, and is the most important. The cut determines the sparkle of the diamond. A proper cut ensures light reflects from one facet to another and is dispersed through the top of the stone. COLOR: Color refers actually to how “colorless” a diamond is. A truly colorless diamond is very rare, with most diamonds containing shades of yellow or brown. Cut can also affect color because a skillful cut can often disguise some coloration. CLARITY: Clarity refers to how pure a diamond is when considering its internal and external characteristics. These characteristics are called inclusions, which are internal flaws visible by magnification and blemishes, which are small surface flaws. The fewer inclusions and blemishes, the more valuable the diamond. CARAT WEIGHT: A Carat is the weight measurement of a diamond. The word carat refers to the natural weight of a carob seed. Historically, diamonds were weighed against these seeds. As diamonds increase in size, their cost usually increases geometrically, rather than mathematically. It is not unusual for a one carat diamond to cost four or five times more than a one-half carat L I N C O L N C E N T E R C Hstone R O N I C Lof E |equal F E B R Uquality. ARY 2018
A second factor of diamond selection is shape. Shape determines the style of the piece and is often the first priority in selection. The two most popular shapes are round brilliant and princess cut. There are also cushion, emerald, and other shapes. ROUND BRILLIANT: Called brilliant because cut and shape work together to create maximum sparkle and beauty. PRINCESS CUT: This is a square design with a brilliant cut. The square shape allows more visibility of inclusions and coloration. CUSHION: This cut has more rounded corners than the princess and larger facets for more radiance. EMERALD: Cut with long and narrow parallel facets for an optical appearance. The top of the diamond is large and open, and highlights the clarity of the diamond. 17 CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE

Win a Date Night
With Valentine’s Day and wedding season fast approaching, now is the time to brush up on your diamond education! “If not an engagement ring,” says Long, “Valentine’s Day gifts are something you can wear everyday; something of comfort. It is an emotional purchase that you can look at everyday to evoke special memories.” Popular choices for Valentine’s Day at Gary J. Long Jewelers include diamond earrings, heart pendants, engagement rings, ruby red jewelry, as well as their unique selection of real roses dipped in genuine gold for a rare and timeless gift. Besides custom jewelry design, Gary J. Long Jewelers also offers a myriad of services including appraisals, insurance, jewelry repair, buying gold, estate jewelry, and financing. Another special feature of Gary’s impeccable customer service is his commitment to confidentiality. “If I am creating a custom engagement ring for a fiancé-to-be and it is a surprise, we are the only ones who know who is getting engaged. It is a very special and exciting circumstance. I never share who came in and purchased what with my friends and family, because you never know who knows who and just like that, the surprise could be ruined!”

news from the kitchenside
The holidays are over and I’m feeling CRABBY! In a good way, though! Already my dining table has been decorated in butcher paper and covered in cracked crab twice, and we have taken part in at least one crab feed. And it is GOOD this year. What I love most about crab season is sitting at the table with family and friends. It’s the kind of food that takes time ... time to crack, time to pick, time to eat... which means more time together. I like to watch to see each devourer’s
favorite piece. My husband and mom both like the bodies: Reid picks and eats, whereas my mother picks and piles. I’ve never gotten the pick and pile method....far too painstaking, as far as I’m concerned. The rest of us are always drawn to tease her with a reach across the table to steal a bite from that pile, each time risking a crab fork to the hand! I prefer the meaty bite from the leg, ever so slowly drawn out, so as not to damage that perfect morsel! And then there are the dipping sauces...if there are 4 or 5 people at the table there are at least 4 or 5 different dips to accompany each bite. Drawn butter, hot in the butter warmers? Cocktail sauce? Mayo, ketchup and lemon? The possibilities are endless, and of course, always served with crusty French bread and butter.... maybe a glass of wine or two, making it the perfect meal for Valentines day! Or any day, as far as my family is concerned! The KitchenSide at Best Wishes is fully stocked with crab forks, bibs, shell crackers, and the all important butter warmers - and don’t forget, the perfect little dishes for the all too necessary sauces! AND... if by chance there is any crab left at our house, my mind wanders to Eggs Benedict topped with crab or my Hot Crab Dip.
These 3 tax-smart moves could help you pay less in taxes next year
Feeling like you paid too much in taxes this year? It’s not too early to make a difference for next tax season. Here are three tax-saving investment strategies that may help you keep more of what you’ve earned: 1. Consider tax-free municipal bonds1 for federally tax-free investment income. 2. Contribute to a traditional IRA or 401(k) to lower your taxable income. 3. Contribute or gift to a 529 college savings plan2 for children or grandchildren. Let’s work together to find tax-smart strategies that fit your needs. 1 Municipal bonds are exempt from federal income taxes but may be subject to state and local taxes, as well as the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT). 2 Contributions may be eligible for a state tax deduction or credit in certain states for those residents. If a distribution is taken but is not used for a qualified expense, the portion of the distribution representing earnings is subject to ordinary income tax and a 10% federal penalty.
