pring has finally sprung and so have the colors of Lincoln Center. With a long, wet winter behind us, here’s hoping summer doesn’t skip over spring. Before we all jump into vacation mode there is plenty of philanthropy work that needs to be done. This month we feature the Ready to Work program and how it’s changing lives by providing an array of services to assist homeless men in obtaining a job — learn more about how you can get involved on page 24.   Mother’s Day is on Sunday, May 12, and you can find gifts galore right here in Lincoln Center. This month we feature our newest section: Food, Fitness and Fun. Get inspired to be your best —many times that starts from within — taking care of yourself can be the best gift to you and all your loved ones. On page 26, we give you the run down on jump-starting your summer with our many fitness offerings. With fitness, comes food! Mother’s Day and Graduation are on the horizon, make your reservations early this Phil Johnson month for brunch whether it’s a perfect egg dish paired with a homemade muffin from Bud’s Seafood Grille or a breakfast pizza from Market Tavern. And don’t forget, a lot of our restaurants can host large groups in their various banquet rooms. If you’re in need of a stroll outdoors, swing by Silveria’s Flowers and Gifts to see Jim’s expanded patio and all his spring offerings.    Summer Events are around the corner, so be sure to save the dates — head to page 7 to cut out the reminder for your fridge! You can always visit lincolncentershops.com for more details. All I can say, is that we’re going to be rocking all summer long. Kicking it off with the Wine Stroll on June 21, benefiting the San Joaquin Historical Society and Museum. A big thank you to Junior League of San Joaquin County as they embark on year four of volunteering to make the Wine Stroll a successful event. Have you ever heard dueling pianos? Come out on July 19 for this award-winning duo from Temecula, Ca who will be striking their keys all in the name of entertainment on the Brickwalk. More music is on the way, as we feature Take 2, a smokin’ hot dance band performing music from all your favorite genres on August 16. Join us as we take over the Atrium, near Lacquer and Shine yoga + barre + spin, for a good ole backyard dance party. We will have the fun slide, beverages, and food from our outstanding restaurants.    If you’re in search of some inspiration, our cover models are just that. They are leading their legacy in many different industries, setting an example for our young people and making a strong impact on our community. A big thank you to Jane Butterfield, Leanne Scannavino, Cyril Seligman, Kathy Lagorio Janssen and Carol Ornelas for gracing us on this month’s cover at the Japanese Gardens at Micke Grove. Read more about their words of advice on page 17. Speaking of hard work and inspiration, take a look at our Lincoln Center Scholarship recipients on page 22, On the Brightside. These bright young people bring me joy that our great county continues to produce such amazing minds who will guide us into the future.    Get to know your neighbor at Code 3 Wear, as owners Dan and Marvis Gatto tell you all about their expansions and how they love working day-in, and day-out with each other on page 20. You can also get a better understanding of all the different product Artesian Natural Foods offers, as they go into their ninth year in business on the Brickwalk, they have much more to offer than meets the eye on page 14.

local engagements

Brittney and Nicholas A reprint of one of our newly engaged couples is in order. We made a few typos in the April issue, and knew this couple deserved more than that.

The engagement of Brittney Nelson, daughter of Mr. Chris Nelson and the late Ms. Stephanie Combs, to Nicholas Byerley, son of Ms. Lisa Byerley and the late Mr. Marc Byerley is announced by the newly engaged couple. Brittney, head server and manager for almost 10 year’s at Bud’s Seafood Grille and Nicholas were engaged on Saturday, February 10, 2019 at High Steaks Steakhouse in Thunder Valley. The two met in the 7th grade at Capital Christian School but went to different high schools–then reconnected nearly five years ago. They are parents to beautiful 16-month-old Brooklyn, who will make her appearance in their February 2020 wedding as the flower girl.

True to their Roots: BY TARA VALONE

f quizzed, Artesian Natural Foods owners Mike and Leslie Brennan, could give you an in-depth description of every single product they carry throughout their store. After buying the business in 2008 and moving to their location near the Brickwalk at Lincoln Center, it’s been almost 10 years here and they’ve stayed true to their roots ever since.   Not your average “natural foods” store — Artesian provides the community with natural food items, as well as exceptional customer service and product knowledge. Offering a variety of product you can't find anywhere else from a wide-range of chocolate options to satisfy every sweet tooth, to the natural probiotics in their options of kombucha — a fermented sweetened black or green tea drink — in addition to expansive shelves of vitamins and supplements, and season favorites like local honey with wildflower and apple cider vinegar. If you have any interest in any natural product to boost your immunity, relieve pain, help with sleep, calm your nerves or if you’re interested in a trend like the Keto diet or Whole30, Artesian is your store.    The store prides itself on competitive pricing, as it’s no secret that online has taken a toll on all retail businesses, however, Artesian continues to strive for greatness against other big box grocery stores and the internet. A more obvious form of competition that cannot be beat online is their unbeatable customer service. Their staff of 10 are highly educated on their product, in addition to assiting with solutions to any problem you may have.   A new product that has hit the shelves in the last two years — and is their number one seller — is all different forms of CBD. While we’re no experts, Mike and Leslie stress the difference in CBD versus THC (a common term known from marijuana), and how the

two are “very complex and entirely different”. CBD is not psychoactive, meaning it does not produce a “high” or change a person’s state of mind, and most CBD oil comes from industrial hemp. Makers of CBD oil use completely different methods to extract the compound, which is also used in various strengths and ways. Mike and Leslie, along with their team are well-educated, especially after seeing a 300% growth in the last two years from this product alone. It comes in all different forms such as drops, capsules, skincare, balm, and even soft gels for your pets (and so much more). Customers come in daily in search of product to suppport their pain, anxiety and sleep. It’s always best to consult your doctor before using any new products.    So, whether you’re on the hunt for a Whole30 approved dressing or a grain-free tortilla — stay true to your roots, and you can always count on Artesian to stay true to theirs.

KATHY LAGORIO JANSSEN // LAGORIO COMPANIES

After a 17-year teaching career with Stockton Unified School District, which included a stent as one of the first female presidents of the Stockton Teachers Association, Kathy’s career trajectory made a corporate turn when she started a new role in her family’s offices. And once Kathy entered the business world—she took it by storm. Kathy’s contributions in both business and community are nothing short of extraordinary, and have earned her accolades such as Stocktonian of the Year, the ATHENA Award, the Susan B. Anthony Award, and of course, the position of CEO of all Lagorio Companies, which encompass several farming entities.   Kathy has faced barriers along her journey to the top, but hurdled each with grace. She was initially encouraged to start a career in a trade considered more traditionally feminine and leave her family’s agricultural businesses to her male siblings. Once Kathy took a role in Lagorio Companies, however, her entrepreneurial prowess and business savvy was undeniable. Kathy successfully implemented a computer system in one of their largest companies at the time, Ace Tomato, and in 1985 she launched Lagorio Communications—which she then grew from a start-up to the 5th largest communication company in the nation.    Despite working in a male-dominated industry, Kathy’s Success was unwavering. “It took a while before I was taken seriously,” said Kathy, “but I did my homework and learned the business and gained the respect of customers and people in the industry.”    Kathy’s leadership and ambition bleed equally into her community ties. She has served as Chair of the Board of Regents at University of the Pacific, and continually pours support into a multitude of programs and services dedicated to serving Stockton. And though she is such a continued inspiration to the community, it is from the community that she draws inspiration of her own. “[My role models are] young women who are struggling to balance careers, families and service to the community,” says Kathy. “I’m inspired by so many younger women in our community who are idealistic and want to make changes in the world, while still furthering their careers and nurturing their families.” KATHY’S ADVICE? “Know your own strengths, be kind to everyone, volunteer to help.” And perhaps most importantly: “Go for it!”

JANE BUTTERFIELD

BUSINESS COUNCIL

After working as a bank executive for nearly 30 years, Jane now serves as the CEO and President of The Business Council of San Joaquin, a 30-year-old nonprofit organization that strives to maintain and enhance the quality of life in our communities.   Now in a position of extreme leadership, Jane’s path to success didn’t come without its challenges. In fact, during her time in banking, Jane was faced with running a small community bank during Stockton’s terrible recession, all while battling a serious illness and dealing with the passing of her mother—who Jane claims was her biggest role model. “She was courageous, compassionate, fearless and had a deep appreciation for her community,” says Jane. “She too grew up in Stockton, and always had the attitude that I could do anything I wanted to do.”   According to Jane, she emerged from tumultuous times with the awareness that she was much stronger than she realized. She continued to put forth the qualities her mother instilled, and her tenacity and inherited love for Stockton made for a natural transition into her role at the Business Council. Today, she continues to advocate and work hard for the continued improvement of our community. JANE’S ADVICE? “Work hard and effectively, show enthusiasm and professionalism and treat everyone with respect and dignity. Young women today have amazing opportunities that have only increased from when I was working my way up. ...If you find you’re in a position where [being a female puts you at a disadvantage], move on. That disparity shouldn’t be happening in today’s world.”

CAROL ORNELAS

VISIONARY HOME BUILDERS

Carol has served as CEO of Visionary Home Builders for over 30 years, developing the nonprofit from a grassroots organization to a nationally acclaimed corporation, dedicated to bettering lives within the communities they serve. “Our vision is a community where every child and adult has access to safe, decent, affordable and educational training and learning opportunities,” said Carol. Under her leadership, Visionary Home Builders has built and rehabilitated over 1200 units of rental housing and more than 500 residential homes for first time homebuyers locally.   Entering the male-dominated field of construction, however, was a challenge for Carol, especially as a minority woman. She was one of the first women to work in construction and be a developer in the county, and was not immediately accepted within the industry. But an intrinsic love for the field and desire to make a difference fueled her fight. She stayed true to herself, learned everything she could, and kept pushing—all the way to the top.   Much of Carol’s passion for her work derived from her childhood, during which her mother tenaciously cared for eight children as a single parent. “Growing up with eight brothers and sisters, my mom had a vision and high expectations for each of her children. She was a really strong role model and taught us that when something isn’t right, you can make it better.”   Carol’s passion for helping others has not only helped drive her to the top of her field, but has secured her role as a prominent leader within the community. She has served on dozens of local boards, and her continued efforts to give back have earned her honors such as the Susan B Anthony Award, Businesswoman of the Year, the ATHENA Award, and numerous others. CAROL’S ADVICE? “Seek out a career you are passionate about. Don’t settle for the expected. As a businesswoman in a male dominated industry, it is passion that has allowed me to keep reaching new goals and persevere when things become challenging. Passion will drive you to unexpected results. “

CYRIL SELIGMAN // EMMI

A true force of the business world, Cryril’s career comes with no shortage of success. From being the first female chair of the Stockton Ports Commission, to starting her very own company from the ground up, Cyril has continuously trail-blazed her way to the top. “I have not allowed barriers,” said Cyril. “If you have confidence in yourself, so will others.”   It is with this confidence and can-do attitude that Cyril founded her company, EMMI Physician Services, Inc., of which she is also the President and CEO. The company is a coding, billing and Management company for Physicians, and prides itself on being a large employer of women in San Joaquin County.   Building her own business from scratch is not only one of Cyril’s greatest accomplishments, but something she learned firsthand. Her entrepreneurial gusto was seemingly inherited from her grandmother, whom she credits as her biggest role model. “[She] started her own new and used clothing store during the depression. She needed to feed her large family of six while my grandfather was ‘off chasing’ gold during the Gold rush era.”   Over 30 years since its founding, Cyril continues to run EMMI, which has offices in both California and Colorado, all while staying heavily involved in the community. In addition to taking part in several community organizations and boards, Cyril is a founding member of Advancing Women’s Leadership (AWL), which aims to provide young women with inspirational leaders who will encourage them to reach their dreams. CYRIL’S ADVICE? “ Be diligent in your work, attendance, and eager to learn everything about new industry standards.”

LEANNE SCANNAVINO

CHEROKEE FREIGHT LINES Leanne is President of Cherokee Freight Lines, a national and diversified carrier of food grade commodities. For many years, Leanne worked alongside her husband, who founded the business in 1966. But when her husband passed in 2006, Leanne was faced with sustaining the company on her own. “The impact might have been crippling,” Leanne recalls, but with the help of a dedicated staff, loyal customer base, and strong role models, Leanne persevered. The support and guidance of Leanne’s mother and mother-in-law were particularly influential in her success. “Together, they taught me everything I needed to know about raising a family and running a business.”    With continued grit and hard work, Leanne’s business has not only maintained operations, but continues to flourish as a major transporter in a competitive industry. LEANNE’S ADVICE? Simple. “Hard work pays off.”

DAN AND MARVIS GATTO Featuring Jam the French Bulldog

CODE 3 WEAR

How long have you owned Code 3 Wear? Code 3 Wear started in 2012. What prompted you to open Code 3 Wear? After being in law enforcement we wanted to offer a new way of providing services to public safety professionals. Tell us a little more about the history of your store. It was created inside of Code 3 Cleaners (another business that we owned). We started with a 4-way display of uniforms, that quickly grew. In 2013 we sold our cleaners and began the move to Lincoln Center to open a small uniform store with a uniform cleaning service. We quickly found that our store was continuing to grow, which put us through a few different locations within Lincoln Center. From 800 sq. feet to 1400 sq. feet to 2200 sq. feet to our newest expansion of about 4700 sq. feet. What services do you offer? We offer all major brands of uniforms. We have a full alteration and embroidery department and we still provide a cleaning service for uniforms both in-house and on a delivery service to most of the local law enforcement agencies. What agencies to you provide for? Stockton Police, San Joaquin County Sheriff, Stockton Unified School District Police, Delta College Police, Lincoln Unified Public Safety, Lodi Police, Manteca Police, Galt Police, Tracy Police, Brentwood Police, Amador County Sheriff, Calaveras County Sheriff, California Highway Patrol and California Department of Corrections.

What’s your best-selling line? Our best-selling line is 5.11 Tactical, a purpose-built tactical gear, apparel and accessories line. What is your favorite sport? Dan: My favorite sport is motocross Marvis: My favorite sport is F1 Racing What do you like to do on your days off? We like to spend time at home with our french bulldog Jam. What is one thing (or many things) you are most proud of? The rapid growth of our store and the outstanding staff that we have. What is your favorite thing about owning Code 3 Wear? Our relationship with customers and staff. What is your dream vacation? Any tropical beach location. How long have you been married? We have been married for 17 years. Are you involved in the community in any way? All our community activity revolves around the store with department fundraisers (as we spend most of our time here). OUTFITS:

Marvis is dressed in Theadora Boutique and Dan is dressed in Code 3 Wear

Changing Lives

Through Work

Sam Banks, Facility Monitor Specialist Anthony Rhodes, Work Crew Leader

Jon Mendleson, RTW Executive Director

T

he mission of the San Joaquin county nonprofit Ready to Work (RTW) is clear: to help those who are experiencing homelessness change their situation for the better.   According to RTW Executive Director Jonathan Mendelson, the nonprofit fills a gap in the local response to homelessness. Their target segment is the male population, a population Mendelson says has very few support options available in the county.    “Our entire program is focused on getting [those who experience homelessness] a job,” Mendelson said.    The nonprofit provides clients a range of services to assist them in obtaining a job. They offer shelter, food, clothing, case management, counseling, education, financial management, job search support, paid work, skills training, and transportation assistance.   “A job is the key that unlocks self-sufficiency,” Mendelson said. “It provides a long-term source of income that will help people get out of homelessness and break cycles of poverty and insecurity.”    The organization leverages community partnerships to provide paid work for their clients. A few of those partners are Caltrans, the City of Stockton, the Bank of America Foundation, and the Downtown Stockton Alliance. These partnerships allow clients to work several days per week, build soft skills and enhance their resumes for future employment.

RTW’s goal is to move clients through the program successfully. In their first several months of operation, they sheltered 86 men. Of those who stayed in the program for more than 30 days, 100 percent increased their income. There are currently 35 clients, and the organization will soon expand to 45 clients.   Client Theodore Stamatelos used the organization’s resources to help him gain the skills he needed to enter the workforce. Stamatelos came to RTW after completing a prison sentence. Within a month, he identified a professional field, started completing applications, and got paperwork in order. Now, Stamatelos is training to become a commercial truck driver, and he recently graduated from a collaborative court program.

LINCOLNCENTERSHOPS.COM

The organization believes the majority of those who experience homelessness are like Stamatelos. They may have made a poor choice that led them to their current state, or they experienced external factors that contributed to their homelessness.    “People don’t want to be homeless,” Mendelson stated. “But they need help to break free of their current condition, get on their feet, and get the tools necessary to have a chance to stand on their own.”    There are many ways our community can help — starting with our local businesses. Mendelson said they need employers who are willing to hire their clients – ones who have shown the desire and follow-through to invest in themselves.    In addition, the success of the nonprofit depends on funding and donations. To support RTW with your tax-deductible donation, please visit www.readytoworksjc.org/donate-today.

“My family and I have supported many charities through the years in San Joaquin county. This one is truly unique and serves a need that too often goes unaddressed. I am proud to be a part of their mission.” – Dea Berberian, Vice President
