Julie Van Noate of Best Wishes

n this season of Giving Thanks, we at Best Wishes have so many things to be thankful for. We are grateful to you, our loyal customers, for your continued support. It is you and you alone, each and every one of you that chooses to shop with us, that keep our doors open! And to go one step further we are grateful that you voted the Best Wishes KitchenSide THE BEST OF SAN JOAQUIN! We have strived to be the best locally owned kitchen store and in only two short years have accomplished that! We will continue to offer you the best products and service we possibly can! One of the BEST products on The KitchenSide is SWISS DIAMOND. It is a non-stick cookware line that actually had one of our customers squeal with delight when she saw we were carrying it. She went on to sell ME on the product! She said she would not cook polenta in anything else. Loyal customer and former chef Aaron Sass refers to them as the “best pans I’ve ever used by far!” The most important part to know is that these pans are coated in diamond dust—yes, DIAMOND DUST! This makes them extraordinarily durable, creates perfect heat distribution and unsurpassed non-stick performance. Diamonds really are a girl’s best friend….even in the kitchen! You will have the opportunity to see these wonderful pans at work at Lincoln Center’s Holiday Open House on November 17th. Our rep, John Adam, will be here to show you why these pans are continually voted #1 and tickle your taste buds with whatever wonderful treat he decides to make in them! n

St. Mary’s Dining Room… Mission Statement

St. Mary’s Dining Room responds to poverty in San Joaquin County by feeding the hungry, caring for health issues and restoring human dignity to over 700 individuals each day.

V

isit St. Mary’s Dining Room and you’ll find that “more than meals” couldn’t describe it better. They provide more than just food, with a dental office, medical clinic, and social services department. But even further than that, they offer second chances. They offer hope. The people there are extraordinary—theirs are inspiring stories of obstacles overcome and the support of a community. This incredible place has been supporting the needs of homeless and financially burdened people since 1955.

more than meals

“Volunteers are able to actually do the work that is necessary to affect change,” Leslie said. “Every day as I pull into work I am reminded that today I have an opportunity to play a small part in supporting and empowering others.” St. Mary’s does a great deal to relieve suffering and respond to poverty in San Joaquin County. They truly value human dignity and see each and every client as an individual. This is what makes the St. Mary’s Dining Room more than meals, more than dental services, more than medical assistance. They are a place for hope, support, and a second chance. n

St. Mary’s is exceptional in its ability to continue to support its clients long after they’ve finished their meal. The dental and medical clinics offer relief for health problems that have often troubled a client for months or even years. Hot showers, haircuts and shopping are all available at the clothing and hygiene center. But perhaps the most important is the social services program. Here, staff and volunteers assist with applications for benefit programs, as well as advocate for clients to secure emergency shelter, transitional housing, and employment opportunities. “The work done at St. Mary’s truly impacts lives,” said Leslie Elliott, Development Associate at St. Mary’s Dining Room. “[We] offer a range of services that not only meet the immediate needs of our clients but also support them, advocate for them and empower them in their personal journey.” Though their services are considerable, St. Mary’s is always looking to increase what is available. They hope to be able to extend the hours of the clothing and hygiene center to accommodate clients as they go back to work. In addition to the hot breakfast and hot lunch already served, they want to be able to serve a hot dinner. Finally, they hope to be able to increase the hours of their dental clinic. In order to accomplish these goals, though, they are in need of volunteers.

They truly value human dignity and see each and every client as an individual. This is what makes the St. Mary’s Dining Room more than meals, more than dental services, more than medical assistance. More than Meals Tour Information If you would like to RSVP for a tour, which occur every 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month at 11:00 am, please contact Leslie Elliott at (209) 467-0703 or lelliott@stmarysdiningroom.org.

(and Feet!) While helping serve Thanksgiving dinner at St. Mary’s Dining Room in November 2008, Hannah, then age seven, noticed something: some people were not wearing something many take for granted. “I noticed some people without socks,” she said.

Hannah Ketcherside

M

aking a big difference doesn’t have to be about doing big things. Hannah Ketcherside, a 12-year-old student at Merryhill School, didn’t think that her seemingly small decision to forego birthday presents in favor of socks to donate to the needy would mean so much. Almost five years later, the sock drive has benefitted thousands, and Hannah continues to make a difference in the lives of community members in need.

Marcy 608-1002

This simple observation began Hannah’s heartwarming and inspiring story. A few weeks later, she sent out a birthday letter to close friends and family asking that they not bring gifts to her birthday party in December. Instead, they were asked to bring socks, to donate to St. Mary’s Dining Room. Ever since then she has asked for the same thing; instead of gifts for her birthday, she would like socks to donate to those in need. By the end of this year, Hannah expects to gather over three thousand pairs of socks to donate to St. Mary’s. The sock drive has grown into something much more, and it’s surprised even Hannah. “I didn’t really know what it was going to turn into,” she said. And on top of the work she does collecting the socks,

Hannah sorts, organizes and counts the thousands of socks she gets every year. She and her friends give up almost an entire day to sort and count the socks. Hannah has also inspired a close friend, Justin Donaghy, to start a hygiene drive for his birthday each year. This extraordinary girl’s efforts should be a call to action for people everywhere—serving the community can be as easy as sending out a birthday letter. The beauty of Hannah’s story is not that she’s yet to turn thirteen, nor is it that she now runs a sock drive that collects thousands of socks. What inspires and motivates those who know her is that she understood what was needed and took action—an action that has warmed the feet of thousands and the hearts of many more. n

Staying Healthy during Cold and Flu Season C

Tips from Meredith Yerke of Artesian Natural Foods and Marie Cottman, Pharm. D. of Pacific Compounding Pharmacy & Consultations

“...even though the flu shot will not keep you from getting the flu, it will lessen your symptoms and the duration of the illness,” says Dr. Cottman.

old and flu season is officially upon us, so what can you do to help keep yourself well? Prevention: “First and foremost, keep the areas around you clean and be mindful of those around you,” recommends Meredith Yerke of Artesian Natural Foods. “Wipe down everything, even the silliest of things like pens and staplers. When you sneeze or cough, do so in your elbow, which helps keep hands clean and prevents the spread of germs. Keeping hands washed and surfaces clean is an easy way to stay one step ahead of sickness.” Pacific Compounding Pharmacy is no longer offering flu shots but Dr. Marie Cottman still recommends one every fall (you can still get one at Safeway in Lincoln Center South). She says prevention is still the key and even though the flu shot will not keep you from getting the flu, it will lessen your symptoms and the duration of the illness.

HealthyCORNER Dr. Cottman recommends keeping your adrenals healthy to help keep your immune system strong. “If you notice that you easily catch the cold or flu, if you are always fatigued, or you get that mid-day dip of energy loss, these may be clues your adrenals need a boost,” she says. Dr. Cottman recommends saliva testing to check your adrenal function if you believe you may have issues. You can boost your adrenals with B Vitamins and other herbs or you can get some of Dr. Wilson’s Adrenal products at Pacific Compounding Pharmacy. Colloidal Silver: A great immune booster that Meredith keeps at her house and in her desk during flu season. Probiotics: “With a bulk of our immune system living in our ‘gut’, it is a great way to keep it healthy and beefed up during cold and flu season—all seasons really,” says Meredith.

Happy Thanksgiving from your friends at

Cough drops and Lozenges: These are super handy when you get that tickle at the back of your throat. Meredith recommends lozenges with low sugar content. “If you can get them with zinc, this is important,” says Dr. Cottman. If you happen to catch the cough or flu, products from Boiron (boiron. com), Cold Calm, Chestal, Roxalia and Oscillococcinum will help get you back on track quickly. Remember, staying healthy when the seasons change is easy if you arm yourself with the right tools. If you’d like to have your adrenals checked via saliva testing, stop in and see Dr. Cottman and her team at Pacific Compounding Pharmacy. If you’re looking for a good probiotic, see the helpful team at Artesian Natural Foods. n

T

he weeks between Thanksgiving and the start of the New Year mean many things to families: a break from school, a chance to visit with family and friends, and the opportunity to celebrate the holidays together. But more often than not, these breaks also bring four dreaded words that strike fear into the hearts of parents everywhere: “I don’t remember this!” If you have a child in school, then you are not immune to this epidemic of forgetfulness during the holiday season. However, utilizing a few key techniques during time off will ensure that your student is safe from the Learning Layoff! 30 minutes of reading, every day. It’s a proven fact that reading will continue to stimulate brain activity – and plenty of learning! – when we spend time with a good book. Let the cold weather and early sunsets give you an excuse to find a good read. Visit your local library or go to www.BookAdventure.com for free reading resources, learning activities, and customized book suggestions.

The Fight Against Forgetfulness Keeping your Student on Track during Holiday Break

Dinnertime Discussions. A key to maximizing learning at home is to look for built-in opportunities. What better place to strike up meaningful conversations about the day than at the dinner table? Make every topic a chance for discourse, and ask lots of questions! “Why do you think it’s important to eat together as a family?” “What was the best part of your day? What was the worst?” “Let’s plan a family dream vacation – can you grab the map?” There are countless possibilities for great conversation.
